She doesn't teach. She calls it "active learning" and gives you hw with 40+ questions that takes 2+ hours because you have to learn it yourself.
When she lectures, she goes through it fast. However, she does ask if everything is clear and if there are any questions; if there are, she takes her time doing enough problems to make sure that the topic is understood. Her quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class and you know the material. Homework is manageable.
Gillespie isnt very good at teaching. She just goes over problems but doesnt really explain much. Clicker questions are a joke, she mentions how many people got it right but she never goes on to explain. Recommend not taking her, you are better off watching chemistry videos at home.
Gillespie is the greatest professor I have ever taken. The people that complain are the one's who are doing bad. She is very caring and tries to make sure that everyone understands everything. It's not her fault if no one speaks up and says there confused. She is super accessible outside of class. She is amazing, I really recommend her. StudyA
Professor, is very nice, material is hard but she is accessible outside of class. Cares for students but is not great at teaching. One day we had a sub and i understood more than i ever did with her. LAs were the reason i passed her tests, so make sure your on good terms with LA. She gives extra credit, and tries to help out everyone.
She's an okay professor, if you go to class she'll give you a participation grade. Attendance isn't mandatory but it helps to go. She cares about students and tries to make students understand the material.
She's a nice person but a terrible teacher and without a doubt the worst professor I have ever taken, her class was a waste of time and didn't learn anything from seeing her, the first 2 tests a good majority of the class failed so they had to drop.
She's a good professor, genuinely cares about students, tries to make everyone understand, and very accessible. For her first semester teaching, she did pretty well. If you have prior knowledge about chemistry, you'll do fine. Homework is fairly easy if you pay attention.
Gillespie is a great person no doubt, but us as students care more about what we learn than how nice the professor actually is. She is caring, but the structure of the class is dumb. Beware that if you get 100's on all your exams and final, its not even enough for a B. She doesnt know how to introduce chemistry to her students, avoid at all costs.
She is a very nice professor with good intentions but her lack of experience speaks for itself. She does not explain anything well and any material that I learned in this class was either taught to me by tutors or myself. She gives lots of homework because she believes her students will get better at the material but it just gets in the way.
ALL General Chemistry classes at FIU are taught Active Learning style, it's not her fault she's required to teach it that way. She is ALWAYS available to help her students, if you don't know something, SPEAK UP, she can't read your mind. Most people rating her badly prob never went to class. She's new yes, but she did a great job for her first sem.
I've always struggled with chemistry but professor Gillespie helped me so much.!!! If you want a high grade in her class and to fully understand every concept I recommend going to her office hours, and practice.! She is the only professor who offers so much extra credit homework. DON'T FORGET your clickers. For the final study your past exams.
It was her first semester and it was horrible. Gives some extra credit here and there but she doesn't even make her exams, so there are things on the exam that she hasn't taught. Take someone else, she's kind but a horrible professor.
Even though she seems to really care about her students' learning, she was a horrible professor. She wrote her calculations in pen, which caused her to scribble all over the page and make her lecture completely confusing. I managed to teach myself all of the material and survive. If you can do not take her class.
I feel like she has great potential to be a great professor, but right now she's really bad at explaining and is often lost in her own thoughts. It's quite evident she knows the material but doesn't know how to explain it. Because of her lack of experience, she would also say some things that were just plain wrong. You'll end up teaching yourself.
If you pay attention in class, take advantage of all your resources, and try, without just blaming the professor you will pass. Gillespie actually cares about her students, and makes sure they understand. All of the things other students are talking about is descriptive of the other professors as well and something out of her control.
Professor Gillespie has potential however I wouldnt take her again . The tests were not written by her and she always give things that are beneficial for the test at the last minute. The class average for one of the test were so low we only got 10 points.
Whatever you do don't EVER take this lady. All 3 classes go at the same speed but she's the only one who can't keep up. This is by far the WORST chemistry professor in FLORIDA. She doesn't know the material so therefore she makes it hard for others to learn from her.
She teaches fast, so you will have to study at home a lot. Her lectures are decent, but she is most helpful in her office hours! If you do all the practice exams/assignments you can ace the tests. Her class takes time&effort, so if you are uninterested in chem, or you don't have time, don't take her class. She is a very nice and helpful prof.
Professor is one of the best teachers I have ever had. This class is not hard. Do not listen to the people below me. She explains herself, but people are always talking and on their phones. If you take the time to study before class and do the homework, you will fly by. Also make sure to go to CHEMPAL with the LAs, they are AMAZING. They help alot.
Don't listen to people who complain about this professor when they are failing the class. All the chem professor give the same test. All the professors are equally hard, but choose her because she cares about you the most. There is extra credit and chempal that help a lot. Use all the resources given. I had a great experience with my group and LA.
It was Gillespie's first semester, she has potential but her first semester was horrible. I pulled off a B but I have to give it my all only to that class. You can miss class and learn the material yourself, it will sometimes be better for you to miss class but actually study. All she does is go over problems but does not actually teach, goodluck.
The practice and study guides arent at all like the exam. There is a reason she has 50 people in her class becasue she is a really bad teacher. The class average was a 56. At that point, it doesnt even come down to the students. Get ready to teach yourself the material, and be willing to pay alot of money for tutors because its the only way to pass
You teach yourself. She tries to teach the class, but falls short. CHEMPAL is a must and she offers alot of extra credit. Shes nice, but i would take graves, or wait the next semester to take him. You will save yourself the headache of teaching yourself and being lost in class. $90 for the book with access code. You must do the homework to pass.
In my opinion, I wasn't very fond of Gillespie. Chemistry is already not an easy course and I felt that she was going really fast and not really trying to make the material stick in our heads. I pulled off a C, but from taking CHM 1046, this semester, I have Swamy and I think she's a better choice.
Makes many mistakes, not a clear teacher
This professor isn't very helpful. She just assigns homework to you that she expects you to already know how to do. She talks in an angry customer voice like she always wants to complain to your manager. If you have a background in chemistry and can handle tough material without help, then take her. If chemistry is hard for you, avoid her class.
The hardest class I've taken in my whole college career (junior), if your a B average student, do not take this professor unless you want to teach yourself just about everything. Very unorganized class, and professor, i know she cares about the students. But as they say those who can't do teach, she can do, but she can't teach.
Absolutely terrible! She assigns a ridiculous amount of homework, exams dont match the review, and the review answer key has missing and wrong answers. It also doesnt help that shes terrible at giving lectures and claims our low test scores are due to 300 students not studying enough. Love yourself and avoid her completely!
I absolutely love her! She cares a lot about her students and will email you back within the hour. Easily accessible outside of class. She does provide a lot of homework, but it's very crucial to help understand the lectures. She tries to have fun with you and the LAs are a great help. I had a lot of fun with my group and my LA.
She is nice and really willing to work with anyone who is showing effort, gives lots of xtra credit so if you happen to slip up on assignments, there's hope. Do the homework and study, just understanding the material wont make you pass, her style is more about facilitation of learning but you have to make the effort to understand it.
She's not the best teacher, her tests do not match the content she teaches in class. She offers a lot of extra credit which is good and you have to do all the homework. If you get A's on all the exams you still won't end up with an A. Its really important you go to class she gives a lot of participation credit. Take someone else if you can.
Ok so, she is not that bad of a teacher. The issue with this class is her teaching does not match up with the exams. Basically, the exams are very difficult for the way she teaches and the content she teaches. The exam reviews are nothing like the real exam. Take this class if you are good at chem. If you are not, then avoid her.
Ok, she's not a terrible teacher but she's not good. She does give lectures and as long as you are paying attention you will understand although she can sometimes be a confusing. I do think her tests were harder than her practice tests and she loves to trick u. There's also lots of online HW. Attendance required for iclicker points. Avoid if u can!
Avoid if you can. Do yourself the favor.
Even if you put forth effort into her class, her exams are as unpredictable as her mood swings! She is NOT approachable, and admits that she wants to trick you with her questions! Even with very low averages on the exams, she acts like the problem has nothing to do with her. Come to her for help and she will just laugh at you. Avoid her if you can!
Highly advise you take any professor but Gillespie she is difficult and her exams are near impossible no matter how hard you study because they are so tricky.
If you decide to take her, here are some tips: 1. STUDY. Take time from your day to search up videos that will help you. DON'T BE LAZY. 2. Don't wait until last minute to study for her exams. Her reviews are nothing like the exam; they are more to see if you understand the concepts needed to answer the questions on the exam. 3. Go to CHEMPAL!
There are way better chem professors at FIU take her as your last option. Take your iClicker for participation points, watch the videos she posts for every test, and go to CHEMPAL if you need extra help. Lots of hw but they are good practice. Test averages are low even with the extra credit free response question she adds on every test.
Worst teacher I have had so far. Cannot teach if her life depended on it, and is not helpful whatsoever. Does not help prepare you for the exams - you need to teach yourself all the material. Do not take unless you don't have a choice, and even then, try to take this class online. You have a better chance of understanding the material that way.
She's not the best professor, but her class is doable. I took her for Summer B and I just used CLUTCH, the workbook, & did ALL the practice worksheets/reviews, which helped a lot. Bring iClicker everyday. She gives a lot of hw, quizzes, & 3 exams. Everything she does in class WILL be on the exam. The final exam boosts your lowest exam grade.
Great professor and she really cares about her students! You need to attend class to pass. Also, There are Learning assistants in her class - some are very helpful, others not so much. Exams are hard but they are made by the department - if you study and take your time learning the concepts you'll be fine.
I had her for fall and I think that although she there is a lot of homework it is VERY helpful. As long as you study for all the tests and got to all the lectures you should get an A or B. She gives a lot of participation points and opportunities for you to raise your grade. The class itself isn't easy, but she helps you understand the material.
Professor Gillespie is not as bad as everyone makes her sound. Does she give much hw? Yes but it is better because you learn the material and the tests arent that hard. If you go to the lectures and study and do the Hw, you are fine. It is a bit face paced to make sure not to fall behind. She really cares about the students and enjoys the class.
Lecture heavy and she's one of the new chem professors so I don't really recommend
You have online homework, you have homework from a book of exercises that you need to purchase and you have in class quizzes ALONG with lecture questions that you need to answer using Tophat. Professor moves fast so you end up having to teach yourself the material, plus you don't even get to pick your seat. Exams don't match her reviews. AVOID HER
I was so afraid of taking this class with this professor after reading her reviews but honestly, I think that if you put effort into what you are doing in the course you should not be failing. I have a friend who failed the first 2 exams and now has a B after getting a B on exam 3 and a C on the final. And you can fake the hw, she doesn't check it.
She isnt a bad professor. Some students are just lazy and dont take time out of their day to study. I believe shes a great teacher. If youre unaware of something just ask. She literally asks if we have questions on what we just did. She gives a lot of homework but thats all for our benefit. The more practice, the more you understand.
I took CHM 1045 & 1046 with her. She does not explain very well, yet she does help if you ask. In my experience, she helps and likes those who go to office hours and participate. I got a B in 1045 and C in 1046, but TBH the C was because I didn't study enough for that final. She's a fair grader... not a bad professor but not the best.
I never enjoyed Chemistry until I took it with her. She is an amazing professor and she made me understand and enjoy chemistry. As long as you pay attention & do the practice problems that she posts on canvas the class is an easy A. You just have to study. And she explains really well and tries hard for you to understand.
Excellent professor. She cares about each and every student. Like any university class, you need to study. Lectures are step by step, easy to take information in. Exams to the point. Recommended! 5 stars. Pick her section before no spaces are left, or you will regret it. Same for CHM1046! GO TO CHEMPAL!!!!
Goes too fast and doesn't explain things as if she is teaching it for the first time. It's like she expects you to already know what she is talking about. Not a class to take with other sciences or difficult classes. Tons of homework that she makes due in the middle of the week instead of giving time for people to complete by the weekend. Horrible
Everything she touches upon is very brief so you will teach yourself. Theres an extra credit question after exams but she grades it very roughly. I got the correct answer and showed all my work and she still took a point off for not writing out one part which is still shown that it is understood in my work even tho I didnt write it out.
Honestly one of the sweetest professors to take. Speaks clearly and explains concepts well. There is a lot of homework, but it is doable. Just stay focused and positive and come to class! Also lots of extra credit!!!!!!!!
I took her a year ago and at the time thought she was way worse so let me give a less bias account of her class. Her teaching isn't the worst if you pay attention, what busted my balls in her class were her very difficult tests and her less than fair grading scale. The hw she gives is annoying to do but helps with understanding. Wouldn't recommend
The sweetest person I've ever met, I don't care what these negative reviews say but I've never seen such a dedicated professor willing to help her students the way she does. People expect an easy A just handed to you in chemistry. Just put in the time you need to study and stop complaining about silly things.
This professor is amazing. Do not pay attention to the negative reviews because that is what I did and I realized people were just complaining to get an easy A. Its chemistry, obviously you have to study! Go to every class, a few chempals (they are extra credit), a few chem tutorings at the library, and do the homework and you'll be fine.
Professor Gillespie is clear about the grading since the beginning, she also helps students and allows plenty of practice during class. There are extra credit opportunities including chem-pal and study hall. The class was overall easy to keep up with, even though it was a 6 weeks course. Totally recommend this professor, tests are clear and doable.
Does not take accountability for her mistakes that sets you back on Aleks homework assignments. Uses old exam reviews that are barely helpful then makes the tests extremely difficult. Talks really fast when you ask for help. Teaches material in a basic conceptual way and assigns the practice for homework. Save your money. Take someone else!
Compared to any professor ive ever had, Prof Gillespies summer b class was the best chem class ive ever taken. Unlike any professors, i felt like she prepared her students. Whether it was tophat questions or in class assignments (she makes sure you have accessibility in learning what you need for the exams). Straight forward, just pay attention.
Below average. Needs to take better control of the class. Gives little feedback on progress throughout the semester. Tests are made difficult based on the department wanting a 70 percent test average, not according to material taught in class.
I usually never rate professors, but after taking Professor Gillespie for CHM 1046 for Summer B, I just had to. She was clear since the first day and gives A LOT of practice which is helpful for her exams. There is also a lot of extra credit given out throughout the semester. Shell make you work for the A, but definitely worth it. TAKE HER!
YOU HAVE TO STUDY!! Chem 2 is includes more math. Her teaching style is working on problems during class, so if you read before class you will understand better. Do all your homework and do ALL THE EXAM PREPS.
She does give a lot of homework but she is super nice and she explains really well. We do problems in class together after every explanation/lesson and I find that very helpful. I do recommend you choosing her!
She explains things very well isnt that lecture heavy
There is a lot of homework but the homework given is in order to provide as much practice as possible. The course is demanding but as long as you do what is expected you should be fine. Some extra studying might be needed for certain topics.
She was a great professor! No matter what chem teacher you take you will have to work, but with Gillespie she is very caring and made the whole class much more enjoyable. She is relatively new but has teaching down pat. Definitely recommend!
The work load required for this class is insane. She assigns nearly 4 hours of homework almost every night. Some of it is done online through the ALEKS. The work she assigns and the stuff on the exams are almost completely different. As long as you put the effort in and show up and try, you should do ok.
This professor is great. She is extremely helpful during her office hours and cares a lot about her students. If you put in the effort, you can achieve an A in the class.
Study until you cant any more she mumbles and speeds through the topics like your already supposed to know them. Build a study group and go to chm pal and you might survive. Wont show grade until end of semester!
There are three exams and a final. Your final replaces your lowest exam. Only came to class for the participation points that she gave on tophat. I never really learned anything from her lectures so the learning of material was all really up to you and who you studied with. TA's are also your best bet. She has her grade book locked all semester.
I don't think this professor has a good teaching style for students who can't learn on their own or are visual learners. she goes over a few examples in class for whatever subject you're learning that day and assigns much more for homework. Your best resource will be online because she doesnt actually teach.
Rushes through things and does not know how to explain things. Chemistry is not an easy subject and she makes it even harder. Extreme amounts of homework and quizzes ICA almost every class. Uses TopHat for attendance and ICAs. Overall a horrible experience with lots of headaches.
If you have little or no chem background, this class is really hard. Active learning setup with little to no lecture, so form a good study group and pray your LA is decent. Pop-quizzes. Insane amount of online homework, worksheets and workbook pages due mid week. I dreaded every class with her. Im not religious, but for this class, Im praying.
She's not the worst professor, but she is not that good. Her teaching style relies on students being self-taught and this class requires a good amount of work because there is textbook hw, aleks hw, and she gives extra assignments on top of that sometimes. It can be an easy A if you have a good foundation in chem, but if not then don't take her.
It's a chem class... it is hard... study with all the packets that she gives you, do all the homework and go to the tutoring and you should get a B or higher.
Very good teacher but she was sassy at times when people would not be quiet, but she gave plenty of extra credit opportunities and her lectures were easy to understand as long as you went to class and payed attention. She assigns top hat questions that count for class participation.
Professor Gillespie is an amazing! I took her CHM 1045 class in Fall 2019. She gives a lot of homework (ALEKS and workbook) but it helps you so much in the end. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and responds quickly to emails. Reviews posted on canvas for tests are essential to getting an A in her class so do them!
Gillespie has a really bad rating and I don't think shes a bad professor, she many not be the best but she definitely knows what shes doing. Her teaching skills are good and she gives a lot of extra credit tutoring which will add up at the end.
As a biochem major, she has by far been the worst professor I have ever taken at FIU. The coursework is absolutely unreasonable and her personality makes it impossible to ask questions in class. Her attitude is off-putting and she answers questions in an extremely condescending fashion. I barely got by so guys please avoid this professor.
I am a biomajor at FIU and by far, this has been the worst professor I have taken. Be prepared for heavy homework and an apathetic attitude to top it off. Attendance! Super! Counts! Be ready to come to class rain or shine. Would never take again.
Gillespie has a terrible rating but isn't that bad of a teacher, she doesn't lecture too much but when she does it's interactive and goes through examples for every topic. The course has a lot of material that builds on top of each other but she makes it simple and if you study and do homework, you'll be fine! She really wants everyone to pass!
She is extremely knowledgable and will answer every question you have. The class is easy as long as you show up and do the homework. Three tests and a final, she gives practice tests and reviews that if you study you will pass. Beare of pop quizzes, but they are always easy. Gives extra credit and points for doing homework.
Gillespie is an amazing teacher. Chemistry is a hard subject and you need to put your time into it to practice. She sets up this class for you to pass. She is always there to help with anything. She talks a little fast at times bc she wants to get through material but shes great. She knows what shes saying and she will teach you. I passed w/ an A
Dr. Gillespie is an amazing professor. Has a very sweet personality. What made chemistry with her so simple was that everything in the workbook was on the exam. The workshop just made the course very organized and more approachable in my opinion. Whatever homework she assigns is good to help you practice and it isnt a lot.
I cant wrap my head around why Gillespie's ratings are so low. She is an amazing professor. I am a bio major and always thought I enjoyed it more than chem, but after taking chm1045 with her last semester, I began to really enjoy chemistry, I am now taking her again for chem 2. Her lectures are really specific, she prepares you SO much for exams.
She is not a bad professor, this is a difficult class because it is chemistry. You obviously have to work for your grade, it is up to you how much time and effort you want to dedicate. She will help you if you are struggling, just make sure you show up and do all the homework. 3 exams and a final exam, watch out for pop quizzes.
Dr. Gillespie is one of the best professors I have ever had. Her way of teaching engages everyone, and she walks you through most problems in the workbook. Exams are very fair, do the extra worksheets she provides, practice exams, and reviews that she offers, and you're set for every exam! There are pop quizzes, and they're not too bad.
Very good teacher. Ensures to provide enough practice for her students to pass.
There are 3 exams, aleks hw, pop quizzes, & a final. Her rating here is very low but if you show up to class, pay attention, and stay on top of your work you should be fine. Take advantage of CFAS and chem pal to practice. The class is not an easy A you have to work for your grade chem is difficult but she really loves to teach the subject & helps!
I'm a chemistry major and have always had a passion for chemistry, but after taking chem1046, she ruined any passion I had left. She was unaccommodating even though we switched to online class & always rushed through answering questions (whether online or in person). Organic Chemistry Tutor on youtube taught me more than she ever did.
I have never seen a professor show so much apathy towards their students the way Gillespie does. She has failed to accommodate her students well during this rough time, and I have never felt so discouraged about a class until I had her as a professor. To ask her for help on a question is to talk to a brick wall. Gillespie falls short of her peers.
Mrs. Gillespie has managed to turn my love for chemistry into disgust. She is very rushed in class and skips steps in exercises because she assumes everyone understands how to do them. Gives you tons of homework on ALEKS that is done in a different way from what she teaches you. Your grade depends mostly on the exams. Very bad at giving feedback.
She knows that many of her students have never done chem before, so she really tries to explain her steps in her working out. If you don't skip class and pay attention by doing the exercises in class, you'll understand the subject. Plus she gives the possibility of extra credit tutoring that help out. However, she does like to give surprise quizzes
All chem classes do aleks so there is no way around it. She honestly gave very little hw compared to other professors I've had. Just show up to class and you will pass. Didn't go to any extra tutoring and got an A . Just do the mock exams and review before exams and you will pass. If an aleks topic is too hard just tell her and she will move it.
She makes you work for your grade! She offers so much extra credits it's honestly insane. Always do the workbook pages assigned before class so you can have a better understanding during class. The ALEKS HW is a pain but pushes back if a lot of students ask. She truly cares about your learning almost too much because she offers a lot of resources.
Always be perpared for this class! Never skip class. She gives pop quizzes but drops a few at the end of the semester. She's really caring and considerate. Do ALL of the reviews and practice exams and look over the concept and you should do fine all the exams. As for the final, redo your exams and analyze why you got those questions wrong.
I spent most of the week doing online assignments that did not help with the exams. it was part of my grade. As many people dropped her class the average went up so she did not curve. Of course makes her grading look decent when all the people that drop her are not counted. Her expectations are not proportional to what you get. She could get harsh
I am going to be as genuine as I can be. Professor Gillespie is a very caring professor. If you have questions, she will gladly clarify them. If you are still confused, you can go to the LAs, office hours, or CHMpal, which are LA sessions that give you extra credit. There is much HW, but that is essential for CHM 2. Practice a bit everyday.
The workbook is your bible. Do not buy any books; you dont need them. Dr. Gillespie is super nice.
Easy for me tbh
It was a lot of work, but the A is very possible.
A combination between YouTube videos, HW, and the workbook really helped me.
i was scared at first to take chem 2 in a 6 week course online through zoom but this professor was very understanding of everything going on. if youre struggling just ask questions, go to study hall (its extra credit), ask LAs for help. There is a ton of homework but i wouldn't of passed the class if i wouldn't have done all of it.
Professor Gillespie is the best! Chem is a hard subject in general and it requires a lot of effort. Professor Gillespie does a great job at teaching the material. The tricks to do well in this class is to do all the homework, do the practice tests, do the extra credit, and attend office hours! She goes out of her way to help students succeed.
just overall bad professor and rude. i would never take her again
I contacted Gillespie in reference to the final exam date and she responded stating that it could not be rescheduled because once it was out there, it could not be changed. As a student who works, it is disrespectful to respond basically saying that the situation is what it is and that I just had to deal with it. She has grades locked all semester.
Professor Gillespie was very fair when grading! she gave lots of extra credit opportunities and resources to use for the test. If you payed attention in class and did the practice tests, theres no doubt that you could get an A. Her lectures are very interactive with the class and she uses her LAs to help guide you as well. Keep up and practice!
General chemistry I is something that inherently comes with a lot of work and a lot of confusing concepts, but Gillespie puts a lot of thought into how the course is structured. She also gives many opportunities to study with the LAs and others for extra credit. I'm kinda shocked to see that her score is so low on here.
She is the best professor I've had, I was never really interested in chemistry but after taking her class I decided to double major in chemistry. She is extremely caring and gives you test reviews that are identical to the tests. If you study it is a guaranteed A. She also has many extra credit opportunities! 10/10
Cant teach.
Chemistry is a difficult subject. Don't expect to just show up and get an A. I spent hours studying and took advantage of the extra practice tests she gives, the office hours and the extra credit tutoring and I got an A. She explains things well and assigns lots of practice problems. If you put in the work and effort, you can definitely get an A.
Dr. Gillespie is an AMAZING chemistry professor. You need to do your homework, pay attention in class, and do Aleks. Before each exam, make sure to go through the practice tests- they really help . Chemistry can be a difficult subject, but Dr. Gillespie makes it extremely enjoyable! There are some EC opportunities. Definitely highly recommend!
Chem is a hard subject as it is, only professor that has taught me anything while being remote. She gives opportunities for ec, ALEKS hw is probably the only annoying thing. May seem overwhelming at first b/c she's a little fast pace. But over all a good teacher. Not an easy class but she's willing to help.
Like physics, chemistry can be a tough subject. you have to keep up with the homework, papers, and aleks problems. THERE IS SOMETHING DUE EVERY OTHER DAY!!! She uses about three different platforms (which all cost $$) to further drive her stacked lectures. Saying all that, I will still take her again for chem 2 cause she's good at what she does.
Chemistry is a hard topic, but this is the only professor I've had where I have actually understood everything and she knows what she,s talkin about. She's definitely not an easy professor but she teaches good. Her class is a whole lot of homework but the practice actually feels useful. Overall, I will be taking her for Chemistry 2.
Although she might not be the easiest she does really know what she is teaching. A lot of homework but this does help for her exams. She gives mini quizzes every so often which are very easy if you pay attention and do your homework. Attendance is mandatory.
A LOT OF HOMEWORK!!! On top of lectures you have workbook pages due every class, ALEKS online program due every TU/TH/SUN which is the only annoying thing, and some pop quizzes due outside of class. 3 exams (easy) and a cumulative final. Practice exams similar to actual tests. Amazing and kind professor. Would take again if she didn't use ALEKS.
Professor Gillespie is an excellent professor, but you do have to put the work in. The material was challenging, but she did her best to simplify concepts. There are extra credit opportunities available and the exams are very similar to the study guides and reviews she provides. She is also very accessible and will work with you to help you.
Professor Gillespie is my favorite professor at college thus far and the people rating her poorly are the same people who did not put in the work required to do well in the course. She does assign a lot of homework, but also provides many extra credit opportunities and is always there when you need her. Love her <3
Dr. Gillespie is a great professor who not only cares about her students but also about the topic being taught. It was so refreshing to have a professor who actually cared about teaching and having students understand the material. You will have to put in the work in this class, there's a lot of information to cover.
I wish I couldve taken her in-person. Although she teaches quickly, its not hard to catch up. Stay on top of homework and study for the exams, because theyre worth a lot. Her practice exams really help, and so do her office hours. Do not get behind on the work! The break out rooms are also helpful if you have a great LA.
Awesome teacher, she makes an effort to make sure you understand the coursework. If you can't get a question in during class she has TONS of office hours that you can go to. She gives practice exams that are SUPER helpful and definitely prepare you for the test.
The material was easy, but she was incredibly boring; I couldn't concentrate and stay awake through her lectures. Also, since the class size was so big (+200 students). It was hard for me to reach to her for help. I would not take it again because of how bored I was in that class, but it was an easy pass.
Professor Gillespie is a great professor, she is knowledgeable on chemistry and is very understanding. I'm not a huge fan of chemistry but she made the class enjoyable. Like others have mentioned, there is a quite a bit of homework but it graded on completion (except for ALEKS). Practice tests and LA office hours will be your friends!
Dr. Gillespie is super understanding and caring with her students! She does give a good amount of homework, but the homework definitely helps in the sense that you can do not so good on exams and the great amount of homework graded on completion will help you pass the class. She gives amazing practice exams that are identical to exams!
One of my favorite professors at FIU. ALEKS HW can be annoying but if you study using the practice exam the class should be an easy A. Extra credit opportunities, final exam helps with lowest exam grade, and she really explains the topics well. The LAs are also there to help with tons of office hours.
Absolute best!! She teaches you everything you need for the tests! Extremely knowledgeable and will answer any question you have. Her tests are exactly like the workbook, and practice exam problems. If you put in the effort you will be fine.
I've taken Dr. Gillespie for CHM1045 & CHM1046, and all I can say is TAKE her! Chemistry is a difficult subject but Dr. Gillespie makes it easy to understand. She is super-accessible outside of class, and always answers emails quickly. There's a resurrection final and opportunity for extra credit by going to chempal. Best Professor I've had at FIU.
She is a really good and nice professor overall. You will do good if you attend class and do the practice exams. Besides, she is easy to access outside class, answers emails fast and if you have questions go to her office hours, she will explain whatever questions you have. I really recommend taking her if you want to assure a good grade.
Took her fall 2020. Loved taking her class. She explains concepts very well, she will spend extra time on a subject if it's hard, and she provides many resources for you to succeed in the class
Chem is hard and her workload is a lot, but at least Gillespie gives you everything you need to know and everything you need to pass including practice exams and extra credit. Stay on top of the assignments so you don't fall behind, her LA's help A TON. Take her if you really want to learn chem and get an A.
This right here is your go to professor for CHM1046. She is by far the best professor around, I took her class as an audit during the Summer 2021 semester and it was honestly great. She provides plenty of extra credit, and all the LA sessions make sure you have someone available to help you. Homework is a big part of the class but it is flexible.
She was not like what others have told me. She is extremely nice and very understanding. Made the class easy to understand. She and her Las were extremely helpful. Low key wished I had her for CHM1045. Gave lots of work but was extremely helpful to understand the material. Would explain and go over anything that were struggling with. Take her!
Pros: Available outside of class, generous, good attitude, and attentive. Cons: Multiple assignments due (at least 15 per week, at least five a day over three/four days), so much information jammed into a short time, it is impossible to do everything right in this class considering there are other classes students must take and spend time on.
Spare yourself. Making me dislike a subject I love.
Everyone knows chemistry is hard, its not an easy subject. But this professor is one you need to stay far away from. She is very nice and will respond fast but the amount of hw is INSANE. She barely teaches in class and hands you off to the LAs. If youre a STEM major, this class will make you reconsider.
There are graded questions that you can only complete in class. THE AMOUNT OF WORK IS CRAZY!! A minimum of 15 assignments per week (lecture videos that are nothing like the level of difficulty in worksheets and ALEKS assignments ). If you cant teach yourself material, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You need an expert chem base to pass with her.
shes responds quickly &accessible and understandable. Cons: TONS OF HOMEWORK ALOTS OF ALEKS HW! TAKE GRAVES PLZ SAVE YOURSELF!!SHE DOESNT TEACH ! WHEN IT COMES TO REVIEWING FOR A EXAM SHE PUTS YOU INTO BREAKOUT ROOMS you teach yourself ! Assigns workbook pages for hw and picks one to collect! Cant cheat on exam . (Might need Chegg to survive ) !
Pros: Professor is willing to help students and is very nice to talk to Cons: Theres are LOADS of Aleks, workbook pages, videos, a TA session, and a pop quiz to be completed every single week! Taking this class WILL REQUIRED you to teach yourself. The 4 exams are weighted the most so be ready for that.
I always thought an Online class would be tough but Dr. Gillespie's lectures are really helpful, she does give tons of homework but if you do them it will actually help you learn and pass the mastery checkpoints along with content assessments. If you want an easy A I don't recommend this class, but if you want to learn... take her!
I have never encountered such an unreasonable, insane workload/pace in a class. There are Tophat questions, MANY workbook questions, and non stop ALEKS assignments to complete for homework every other day. Yes, on the weekends as well. Tests are proctored on Honorlock. If you have other options for this course, do not go with this one.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO PASS CHEMISTRY. She gives an insane amount of work. I'm talking 10+ assignments every other night. She meets 3 times a week but schedules tests outside of class time (and it not lenient with schedules) and she requires an LA session each week. She also does not teach at all during the 3 lecture sessions.
You are going to like her if you need a structured and organized class, but if you are lazy and you dont want to do homework to learn, then find someone else.
She's a mediocre teacher tbh. so many assignments without really teaching (i taught myself) and she has this snobby attitude and treats her students like 5th graders. take someone else. easy class but save your mental.
DO NOT TAKE HER. I REPEAT IF YOU ARE THINKING OF TAKING HER FOR CHM 1045 OR CHM 1046 PLEASE RUN AWAY. her tests are like 60% of the grade and she is not nice at all. if you are taking this class with any other sciences you will develop a mental illness. Aleks 3 times a week, videos 3 times a week, worksheets 3 times a week. RUN AWAY NOW.
IMO best choice out of all the chem profs. She's pretty nice and her LAs help a lot
I do not recommend at all. This professor has a WORK HEAVY course. The amount of homework given is ridiculous. Tophat questions, play posits, workbook pages, and aleks that can take about 3 hours, 3 times a week for all. Mandatory LA session you must attend for a grade once a week despite meeting for class 3 times. Exams are not to hard worth 75%.
I think she was a great professor. You might have to work for your grade since it is a lot of work but that is for every class. People just complain because they do not want to put the work into study on their own. She gives a lot of opportunities to ask questions. She gives a lot of assignments but it only benefits us as it offers more practice.
She gave a lot of work but most of it was play posits where she is teaching content, which was very helpful. The Aleks assignments were annoying, but the rest of her work only offered more practice so we can be better prepared. She was a great professor. If you put the work in and do not let yourself fall behind then you will be good.
Her grading scale is completely unclear and is extremely misleading as to what your actual grade is in the class and she refuses to acknowledge or fix her mistakes. The total points stated in the syllabus is NOT what the final count amounts to. If you work a full time job do not take this class or you will suffer and she will not care one bit.
Although Professor Gillespie has bad reviews about her, she's actually a great teacher, her lectures really do help if you actually listen because she goes over the material and helps when you ask. Her class was structured mainly around LOTS of playposits, Aleks, weekly canvas quizzes, and exams. Not an easy A, work and effort was definitely needed
What an AMAZING professor! Dr. Gillespie is a kind, highly knowledgeable, and approachable professor (office hours 3x a week). Clear grading criteria with 3 main tests, and a resurrection final (grade that can also replace lowest test grade). Homework is due 3x a week, which is workbook pages, PlayPosit videos and Aleks homework (1/2).
Extra detail: Tests and final are Honorlock, around a 10hr window to take exam -- will receive grades 2 days after completion. Participation is 9% of grade so it's important to go to class withTopHat questions and LAs that check homework workbook pages for grade. Overall, would HIGHLY recommend taking and I wish I had her next semester! (2/2).
Her tests are one of the hardest exams ever. Quizzes too. I have never had a teacher that gives SO much homework. The only good thing is that she opens her test for 10 hours. But literally the hardest exams ever. I feel like its nothing like what she is teaching. Her teaching is good, but her exams and quizzes are not it.
Prof. Gillespies class is not hard, like any STEM class you need to apply yourself and set aside some time to study. Her exams are easier than the study guides she gives, she gives 3-4 study guides before the exam. Most don’t like her because they aren’t applying themselves correctly, you need to do the worksheets to understand the material.
I had Dr. Gillespie for Chem I & II. Her courses are very organized and grades are pretty clear. She does assign A LOT of homework (videos, ALEKS, workbook) but it is to help you really learn the concepts and perform well on the 3 tests + resurrection final ( ~75% of your grade). She is also VERY accessible outside of class! 10/10
Gillespie is sweet. I took her for CHM 1 & 2. There is a lot of HW every week: 3x workbook pg, 3x Aleks, 6x playpoist, a quiz, and 3x Tophat. LA session and exams are not part of class hours. Do not take if you have a full time job! Workload is STRESSFUL! She drops 3 lowest Aleks and quizzes. 10pts max extra credit. Final replaces lowest exam.
Every review here for coursework is accurate, lots of hw etc. If you are a busy person stray away you have hw due 3 days a week , content assessments are hard, harder than the tests. ALEKS overall is a waste towards what's on the tests, i luckily got help from peers on what to study for the tests, the best tactic is to watch her vids during class
I took Dr. Gillespie for Chem 1 & 2, and she is amazing! There is LOTS of homework (workbook and Aleks) and weekly quizzes, but they all make studying for the exams much easier. She is very caring and will definitely help you if you have doubts. Her practice exams are similar to the exams so make sure to do them! Extra credit is offered.
HEAVY WORKLOAD that helps prepare you for exams. I do not recommend her to someone who believes they can slack off and get an easy A. She is very nice and accessible outside of class time. She provides practice exams and office hours to help prepare you better for exams. Be prepared to STUDY and grasp all the concepts taught in lecture.
I took her class her first time teaching at FIU. Till today I have never had such a terrible professor in my academic career. She's made mistakes in my grades and was getting upset when I asked her. She treats students who need help horrible. Even the head of the department saw her attitude, I am surprised she is still working there after that.
Course was taken in the summer, a lot of the material will be covered quickly. I don't recommend taking CHM1045 over the summer. it's a lot of material to learn, memorize, understand. Gillespie teaches well, but her exam practice packets were long and more complicated than necessary; they're were not accurate as to what is actually on the exam.
This was my second time taking chemistry and I am so glad I chose her as my professor. She is very easy to talk to, very understanding if you have valid reasons for submitting something late, and she gives quite a few extra credit opportunities. Her exams are like the practice exams. Only issue is the practice for the final wasnt very helpful.
I was retaking this class because I failed the first time. Decided to do Summer A, which I thought would be super stressful. Prof. Gillespie made this class so easy to understand and I really applied myself. It is a lot of homework, but it is extremely helpful and part of the reason I did so well in the class. Such a great professor!
I took her online 6-week summer course. The exams are easier than the ALEKS, playposits, and worksheets. Her lectures and zoom LA break rooms are very helpful and provide all the material that's going to be on the exam. VERY SWEET AND FUNNY! I would love to have her again. playposits were the most annoying thing. ALEKS HW helped w understanding
Good, nice teacher. Small homework assignments due every class, but doable. I did AP chem in highschool and that def helped. Be prepared to put in effort to do well in the class, hardly missed class and did extra studying. I recommend not taking in the morning (I took later in the afternoon) so you have more time to do the work due before class.
Okay, she's not a bad professor in fact she's pretty good at teaching, but if you have too many classes do not take her, she leaves too much homework, I thought it was a good idea so it could balance out failed exams. IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! choose someone else... homework is only worth 2 points each and trust me it is too much!!
I took this class as in summer A so the course was very condensed. Lectures were easy to follow and worksheets were very helpful. Gillespie was thorough in answering questions and helps work through any issues you have. Homework was worth very little, but one exam score could be replaced by the final exam. Attendance is mandatory if she uses TopHat
I took CHM1046 during Summer A and it was really tough but Dr. Gillespie made the course so easy to follow. I definitely recommend taking her, the structure of her course allows for successful learning. She never dismissed any questions and always made sure everyone understood before moving on. One of the best chem professors at FIU!!
Dr. Gillespie is by far my favorite chemistry professor I've ever had at FIU up to this point. My course with Dr. Gillespie is a retake of General Chem II, and I passed with flying colors. I cannot say enough good things about her, I would highly recommend. Just be prepared to put in the work!
I took her Summer A and of all the chemistry professors I have taken she has been by far the best. Very easy to understand, teaches by doing problems similar to the exam, and shows step by step how to tackle them. Went into Chem 2 by a miracle and learned almost everything from her in just 6 weeks. 10/10 but STUDY AND WORK HARD!!
My grade doesn't really reflect on the professor I'm truly just not a good test taker lol. She's a fantastic professor just knows there's a lot of homework like a lot but she has a lot of office hours and the TA's as well. The final was worth more than the other exams so if you just study and show up every week and do your work you should do okay
I took this class online, the teacher was nice, but she is not good at lecturing, her lectures were not very clear because she would sometimes mess up words or mix them, confusing you. If you do not attend the Zoom meetings, you will fall behind because the notes from the lectures cannot be understood by just seeing them.
Doesn't lecture and gives a lot of busy work worth only 1 credit. The exams are your whole grade and she's so strict with honorlock. You have to show yourself turning off your phone and putting it away. She needs to see your face and hands the whole time. Just a bunch of weird rules. Take someone else if you actually wanna learn.
Gillespie is a sweet and funny professor. Her lectures and Zoom breakrooms are really helpful for understanding the material. The exams are easier than the ALEKS and Playposit assignments. unstuck ai is a great study tool along with the practice exams.
Easiest class ever! The class consists of 4 exams(nonproctored) and 1 short "chem in the news" discussion. There are weekly quizzes that are optional, and if you pass them they count as 1 extra credit point each. For the exams, she drops your lowest one and if you pass the first 3, the final exam is not required. Did not use the book at all.
If you work, go to class and have 5 classes in one term, do not even consider taking this class. There are like 5-8 homeworks due at 1:59 pm right before the class starts. 10-12 pg worksheets, Aleks, Tophat, and PlayPosit videos are the homeworks. So like 5 different websites for doing homework on the same topic. Homework ovearload overall.
Her teaching style takes some time to get used to but once you do its great. Lots of homework, it's easy work, just time-consuming but she's very flexible with deadlines. Tests are heavily weighed and they are hard, but not impossible. If you don't go to lectures the class gets 100x harder. You HAVE to put in the work and manage your time well.
She assigns an ungodly amount of homework (average 7 per class twice a week). Lectures are regurgitated info from the homework. The mean for the first 3 exams were 67-55. She assigned 12 assignments due the day before Thanksgiving and 11 the Monday after (I counted; we did not miss a class). homework is easy but lengthy, pads your grade a lot tho.
Lots of busy work for homework. Not a lot of it made a difference in grade either way, and it could take hours to finish at times. Her lectures basically go over the previous homework and then teach you by answering a few of the following worksheets question.
CHM 1025 (Principles of Chemistry): If you want to take this class to learn chemistry in depth/to prepare for CHM 1045 don't take her! You basically have to teach yourself by reading the textbook because there are no lectures nor other resources to lean onto while studying. Overall, the class was super boring and not helpful at all.
A class you really don't have to dedicate too much time to, it's easy and straightforward.
She is not that bad but do be prepared to do a lot of homework that is worth little of your grade and does not really help on the exam. there are 3 exams and 1 final, which is cumulative. Her lectures are not the best but theyre not useless. Overall, be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the course. She is also very strict with Honorlock.
Lots of homework assignments given weekly that are sometimes lengthy. Has lecture videos uploaded that are a good resource. Exams and final are weighed heavily and are on HonorLock. She helps you a lot in office hours. Personally I would not take her again because I would like more in person contact with a professor, especially in chemistry.
unless you're amazing at teaching yourself do not take this professor So many assignments that barely do anything to you're grade Barely lectures at all and the zooms are just working on the 12 page worksheets in breakout rooms. The LA sessions helped more than the prof. For you're sanity do NOT take her shes nice but such a ridiculous workload
I think she took some feedback bc the HW for chem 2 felt less intense compared to chem 1. The material and exams were more difficult, but she decided on a resurrection final which helped. She is very easy to reach outside of class and going to her office hours is VERY helpful. I recommend attending lecture and asking questions!!! She's very sweet.
She and her TAs are nice and approachable. PlayPosits made by her are very good at explaining the content. Gives so many assignments that it was impossible to do them and also study for exams. Sometimes I would see things on the exam that weren't in her videos or assignments. She is caring and gives resources, but it takes effort and discipline!
She's nice and seems to care, but the workload is brutal. By day 2, we already had 10 assignments due, plus teaching ourselves 2–3 chapters just to keep up. She doesn't lecture or explain, only reviews briefly and sends us to breakout rooms. I dropped by the 3rd class, it felt like teaching yourself an entire course in days.
AVOID! Easily a minimum of 14 assignments a week. Lecture's aren't good and she relies on playposit. Doesn't even have her own worksheets, they are all from Swamy. She's weird about the test, they're through honor lock and the rules are nuts. Nice but forbid you say she forgot to open or assignment or the quiz has a code. Attitude and one liners.
SO MUCH WORK!!! She is very disorganizedthe exams are the largest part of her grades, so you can do 100 assignments, but your grade will not move unless it's your exam grade. She made me feel like I wasn't trying hard enough when I asked her what I could do to boost my grade, even though I would study multiple hours every day and knew the material.
Class average was a 50 and still refused to curve. No matter how hard you study it impossible to get a A on the exams.
Terrible experience overall, tests are made to make you want to drop the class. She wont curve no matter what.
ahh porfessor
she is a horrible professor, does not care about students
horrible professor. she didnt give us any practice exams or reviews for the final exam because she said that we complain too much about the tests not being like the reviews ?? while other teachers did give reviews. tests are super hard but every test is the same for any chem professor. gives extra credit but will only bring up your grade by 0.5%.
it was so difficult to learn for this class! 15 playposits due before each class plus 2 long worksheets and and an ALEK assignment. Suffocating students with work didn't allow for them to actually study. She does reverse teaching so her lectures are just her explaining questions on the homework so it's rlly hard to understand!
This class has an incredibly heavy workload, and sometimes, it's hard to keep up with it all. There's also 7 mandatory LA sessions you have to attend that apply to your participation grade on top of the huge workload of around 8 assignments per week. Exams are not curved.
