Really funny and intelligent lecturer. Provides insight into the material in a genuinely fun and creative way. Not afraid to get personal ("could i BE a bigger lesbian")
lectures are a little fast paced but in tutorial she is very helpful and clear with terms and concepts. hillman is an extremly funny prof who is not affraid to get into detail about some interesting topics
No Comments
Lectures were straightforward and challenging, yet not intimidating. Megan made use of audio-visual materials that were helpful. Her own soft, good sense of humour made the lectures a pleasant experience. She is highly approachable and respectful of students opinions.
Megan is hands down the best TA i had in 1st year her class was hilarious, very clear &shes really helpful in clarifying concepts. we had a really good group (very open) sexual jokes were our forte.we learned that it is no mistake that Pooh wakes up in a puddle of water after dreaming of honey.thanx for a great yr Megan! Hopefully we meet up again!
Shes amazing, real knows her stuff
My favourite first year TA. Megan is very funny and caring. A fair marker, you can get good marks if you listen, but more importantly talk to her. I hope she gets her own lecture one day, try to get into her tutorials. Highly recommended.
Wonderful! She is engaging, entertaining and truly knows her stuff. A real joy to listen to in a lecture setting. Great lady. I would recommend her to anybody.
I had her in first year. So unprofessional and won't stop talking about her sexuality. Her need for attention is insatiable. She is also one of the most militant ideologues in CUPE 3903. She was literally excited about the idea of going on strike. She doesn't care about students, she only cares about being part of radical syndicalism.
She is a contract faculty member who likes try an amuse the class "hip" anecdotes that I personally find smug, forced and a little condescending. Suck up, go to class and "play the game" for an A but don't expect to learn anything useful from this CUPE kid.
The title of the course "Gender Studies" is misleading. I found the course a bit biased. It should've covered all gender issues (including the straight perspective) instead of revolving around lesbian issues. Other than that, her lectures were coherent and in line with the texts. I just wished there had been more variety in the texts.
Weird. This prof is super weird. Low attention span- gets distracted easily. Talks too fast, does not explain concepts clearly and has a giggling problem.
Scary pixie lady. She can be funny and insightful but watch out if you get her attention in class. Expect to get hammered in front of 150+ people if your views aren't in line with hers or if you're not giving her direct attention.
Great prof, funny and insightful and a pleasure to listen to. If you are talking, texting or reading the newspaper in her lecture be prepared to be called on it in fron of everyone, but with good reason I'd say. Take her class if you can and if it is something that interests you.
The most horrible professor that i have ever seen. Nevertheless, if you are a woman you can take classes with her cause she is a horrible ****, men hater. Also she says it openly that she is a lesbian. In my class we had 5 men 4 of them have dropped out. The worst professor ever. Very stupid, selfish, simply pure idiot.
She is HORRIBLE: 1) Sexist (men hater) 2) Stupid 3) Selfish I am just wonder how such human being can be a prof. If you are a male and wanna fail just take class with her. If you are female and want to get A+ take class with her. The worst **** of all time.
I found a lot of her theories far reaching and far fetched. While it was very interesting, if you weren't on the same wave length as her chances are you won't really understand what she's getting at. She does explain herself very well.
She is a men hater. Sexist.

Extremely boring and can't teach. I find that she has difficulty explaining things. Also, her theories are way too far-fetched. But she's cute and nice I'll give her that.
I thought she was fun. She knows her stuff, she's enthusiastic and I came away with a lot of fun stuff from the class. Midterm and exam were easy.
extremely boring and can't teach very well. talks about irrelevant topics or opinions like how a water bottle can resemble a woman's body or how much she respects the "U" in Canadian words. she's very rude to students and calls you out in front of the entire class if you're not on time (EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE PAYING). hope for a good TA.
She whispers when lecturing! Not clear and is all over the map. Does not trust males and will publicly say so. She is more concerned about embarrassing people that are "distracting" her then teaching valuable things. If u don't mind NOT learning anything other then "madness" and sitting in lecture like a 7 yr old with "quite hands and mouths" take her class! She belittles all that are around her & wants participation but shoots everyones thoughts down.
Awful teacher. Boring and not helpful in the slightest. Useless lectures. Tutorial was only necessary part of class.
take her class if you want easy assignments and don't mind listening to an annoying professor to get them. rude to students, everything is "awkward" and a disruption to her...(her saying "awkward" is what makes it awkward). doesn't recognize that you're paying for her. assignments easy, profess annoying. get a good ta.
Megan is hilarious, but also takes her course very seriously, and puts a LOT into her lectures. She wants her students to succeed, always encourages students to email essays early, so she can give feedback so you can improve. The readings and content are great, but this class does require attentdence and effort! Take it, you won't regret it!
Not a bad teacher. Definitely needs to use a microphone to be heard in a large classroom, but she gave me a fair grade so I can't complain. Make you sure you do you work, and she won't cheat you. Does seem to ramble sometimes, but its mostly useful.
Very Bias! She only thinks her ideas are important and worth learning. She really doesn't care about her students. Make sure to never bump heads with her she will make sure to give you poor grades. Should not be a professor!
She can be very intimidating, but knows her stuff. Come to class, READ THE TEXTS, and odn't be upset when she makes you feel stupid. Just take it in stride and ask lots of questions. She's a good prof but is hard to appreciate because she's too intense. I enjoyed her class a lot! Glad I had her.
I don't know why she is a prof! Think of all the possible bad qualities a prof can have.. and she has all of those.
Meagan is a very intense person, and can be very intimidating. However, she loves her subject and knows a great deal about. If you put the effort into this class, it will be worth it. I fully enjoyed this course.
had her as a TA. She is super difficult. Extremely hard marker. I'd send her my points for an essay and she'd reply that my points are great but when I received my paper back it said how my points could have been better! Participation is very important to her. If you have her as a TA you better talk or she seriously won't even know who you are.
Had her as a TA. Very helpful if you want to go over your essay with her. Just shoot her an email and she will go over your essay to help you improve it. Found the course very easy, participation in tutorial is important. Just know how to write well :)
Megan Hillman is honest, often painfully so. She knows her subject matter very well and does not entertain every idea as if it has equal merit. She is a hardass who expects a full effort from her students. She is also funny, fair and tries to ensure that everybody understands the course material. Don't take any of her courses expecting a free ride.
I’ve had difficult and tough profs in the past, but I always do well in my courses. I even did well in Megan’s class considering her degrading and curt attitude toward students. I worked my butt off and that’s how I passed. She was no help as a teacher.
Her teaching style is ancient and disorganized. She doesn't use PowerPoint, she'll scribble some illegible words on the board, read directly off her notes, and sometimes use the overhead. She will jump from authors, to definitions, to theories, making her hard to follow. If you ask her to repeat herself, she will become visibly annoyed and angry.
Meagan is exceedingly passionate and enthusiastic about the subject, which makes this class very interesting. She will give you a different, analytical view on literature. Participation is crucial; do your readings so you have something to discuss during tutorials, and do ask questions for clarity if needed. Input effort, and you will be rewarded.
I have too many complaints about her. I'm just gonna list them: 1 She's boring&confusing: switches topics without notice making it hard to follow her train of thought 2 expressed her disdain for religion which I found very rude 3 got annoyed when someone would ask for clarification 4 solidified my decision to drop English as a minor
I'm pretty sure she forced the TAs to give lower marks. I did really well and somehow ended up with a B and won't reply to my emails about it. That being said, the lectures aren't so bad- she tried to make it interesting. She is helpful and honest. Easy material, readings are crucial.
Do not take this class. She's not a good prof. She's rude and disrespectful. What she wants is an ongoing mystery. Others seem to think she's easy, but she's really not. Her feedback is more confusing than her lectures, and they are a waste of time. Too long and too much rambling.
Hillman is not a fair grader. I wouldn't advise anyone to take this course online.
Megan is really helpful to her students, always gives quick, practical feedbacks on assignments. Lectures are generally clear. and she helps us get through assigned readings clearly. Recommended!!!
Prof encourages friendly and educational atmosphere. Is friendly and makes lit. theory interesting rather than boring and monotonous. Tries to help students to the best of her ability and is very approachable.
She was really enthusiastic about the course material which helped cause the lectures wouldn't be too boring. Be ready to give insightful analysis on all the forum discussions if you want a good mark. We had to read three books and I only read 2 and half of the third book and got a decent mark. Overall, decent course and I don't really like english
I took an online course with this professor over the summer and was certainly not expecting the course to be as difficult as it was. Very tough grader with high expectations but she made the material interesting.
I took EN 1006 online in Fall 2016. Megan Hillman makes the lecture very interesting and concise. She is EXTREMELY difficult grader when grading essays. I understand she gives a lot of feedback, but remember EN 1006 is meant for non majors (credit for graduate school) and she should really be fair when grading essays. The final exam is easy.
While Megan was a good professor in terms of course content, I found her personal agenda to be too much for class. She would constantly take opportunities to insert her political standing into lectures. For example, she would constantly bring up the fact that capitalism was bad. This made me feel rather uncomfortable.
I WOULD NOT SUGGEST YOU TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROF., WORSE PROF. AT YORK.
She's not the best in lectures, often rambling too much to feel like my three-hour lecture was worth it. However, she introduced me to some amazing theories about the books we read and genuinely teaches very insightful ways to study literature. You have to think outside the box for her, but she rewards you when you do.
Assignments poorly explained and very boring lectures. Would not take a class with this prof again.
Worst professor! In every class she wasted time on her own disgruntled work situation and political ideology without questions or balanced thought. Do not take this class if you feel uncomfortable licking boot as only her beliefs seem to be accepted. Without question, in my opinion, this was my worst professor at York University.
Meghan was a really helpful TA who gave me sooo much help with my writing. I appreciate your time.
Had her for EN2001 & 2002. Shes not my worst prof but definitely NOT good at all. Doesnt actually teach anything just repeats and summarizes the readings in lecture. Dont take her classes if you dont have to.
She gives good feedback about what she wants, but she's also a ridiculously hard marker. I'm a B student but I received a D+ in her class. She seems to take marks off really menial things, so it's very important you leave no room at all for any misinterpretation, while also somehow saying it in the smallest amount of words possible.
Very boring lectures and not an effective teacher at all. Turned me off of English completely. Avoid at all costs.
I took this course over the summer. The course is divided into 3 sections and you must write a response paper for each section. She marks very hard!! Theres a major paper thats worth 30% and the final exam is worth 25%. Toughest exam ive ever done. You have to write and essay, "short" answers and analyze a poem in the point of view of 3 theorists.
Spends more time talking about the union than she does teaching. Can't understand why someone would keep teaching when they clearly hate their job. Lectures are uninformative and repetitive. She could be a better teacher if she didn't focus so much on ideology. Pretend to agree with her if you want to do well but don't expect to learn anything.
Very uninspiring. Lectures are very boring. Seems like she's phoning it in or lost the passion a long time ago. I would not take a class with her again even if it was the only one offered and I needed the credit.
Maybe it was the online format but this was the worst class I've had at York. I wisely dropped part 2 of the course. Prof seems nice enough but can't teach effectively. Maybe just the online format like I said but I would never take a class with her again.
I am very surprised to see so many negative comments about Dr. Hillman. I found her to be an excellent teacher, very helpful when asked for further explanation of course material or for advice on how to proceed with an assignment. She definitely "knows her stuff" and expects her students to do the work needed to succeed in this course.
Very boring and confusing lectures. Didn't get very much out of the class. The readings were fine but the rest of the class is awful.
Fantastic teacher. She is a tough marker, but her feedback is excellent and she lets you know exactly what she is looking for. She is also very approachable outside of class and does a lot to help you out if you ask. This isn't an easy course (subject was literary theory), but if you put the work in you will learn a lot.
I'm here to say that Prof Hillman is awesome. If you're someone who cares about your education, she's an amazing instructor to have. She encouraged me to succeed in so many ways and was so accommodating and provided great feedback. I felt like I truly earned my A in her class. Really cool person, and really down to earth when you get to know her.
Prof. Hillman's online prerecorded lectures are lovely and there is a happy joyful tone to her speaking voice. Lots of extra material not part of text is added for context and clarity. Lectures are very well organized. She is very helpful but a tough marker and the grading criteria are opaque.
Course was called Introduction to literary studies. It should have been called Introduction to Boredom. The worst class I took all year with a very uninspiring and uninteresting teacher. AVOID.
Worst prof in my undergrad experience. Tried my absolute best and still couldn't do good. NO clue what she marks based off of. Showed her my drafts for assignments, did what she asked, followed all the guidelines and she still handed out D's on D's. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! IF U LOVE YOUR LIFE. Worst mistake ever taking class with her.
The Worst
Really like her as a person. Hate her as a prof. She's very nice, but her grading makes no sense, and no matter how hard you try to apply the feedback she gives your grades will not change. Very tough grader.
This prof is one of the worst I've ever had. Doesn't teach well at all. AVOID TAKING ANYTHING WITH HER.
I've had worse profs but she's very close the worst. Feels like she's going through the motions and doesn't care about her teacher or her students. Lectures are often factually incorrect and have weak connections to the readings. I don't know how anyone thought she was qualified to teach this class.
Just in 5 simple words. AVOID HER AT ANY COST!!!!!
I took it in the summer (6 weeks/ S1). And that was the only problem. The course was basically rushed, but Megan did best as an instructor in this small period of time. We had a lot of readings, and papers to submit in small time. She cared for us, encouraged us, and taught us well. I'm happy I took this course with her.
i didn't expect it to be one of my hardest courses this semester. there is weekly participation through activities and discussion posts(complete waste of time).she's an easier marker when it comes to those, but the 3 essays she assigned were very vague topics and her marking was not forgiving. she was available to discuss ideas over zoom if needed.
i didn't expect this course to be the one where participation mattered the most. students had to complete a weekly activity and 2 discussion posts (1 of their own and 1 responding to another student). there were 3 essays and a take-home test which weren't too bad. she is great at giving feedback and helped me with writing my thesis for all of them.
By far the most non-understanding professor I've had. Extremely tough marker, and if you aren't able to make it to every single class, don't take the course. Extremely passive-aggressive through communication outside of class and always lets you know that you're wrong. N E V E R again.
She's a nice person but not a good prof. Very strict grading criteria, and even when you apply her advice, it doesn't make a difference, you still get similar grades. Course itself was interesting and lectures were engaging. She responds to emails quickly and is willing to help. But vague assignments and grading don't really make it worth it.
For a 6 week course, I feel the course was Very content heavy and every second I wanted to kms
Wish I had taken a different course. ANY other course. She's possibly the worst prof I've ever had. Seems bitter and takes it out on students. Some people just need to retire already.
the workload was okay but i didn't really like how this professor teaches. it was confusing and prof hillman is quite the tough marker. avoiding this prof for future classes.
Megan Hillman is a horrible Prof and I strongly suggest that you avoid her at all costs, if I could giver her a rating lower then 1 I would. She is heavily opinionated, she is a tough marker, and her lectures are hard to follow. Some people really need to retire.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. Discussed my thesis with her for an essay which resulted in me redoing it 4 times (she approved of it in the end) however it still was not to her standard as I received a low letter grade overall on the assignment and a ton of "constructed feedback" on my approved thesis. Course content is also hard to follow.
My least favourite prof and my least favourite class. Feel like the least knowledgable prof I've had. Unless it's something about labour issues, strikes, and the union and then suddenly she knows a lot. Too bad this wasn't a class on labour issues.
Megan is a lovely person (but is a bit passive aggressive),not a suitable professor. I thought this course would be interesting (it was), but she lacks methodical teaching; there was no guide to class, it was all over the place. She marks extremely hard (got D+ on my essay as an English major). Went on strike for 6 weeks, didn't help, marked hard.
If you care about your GPA do not take her class. She is impossible to please, even if you implement her feedback. She claims that there are no wrong answers for response papers but then gives you a bad grade if you don't regurgitate her views, and even then it's not enough. Very rigid and inflexible with deadlines, big time avoid.
I was surprised to see so many negative ratings. I had her for an online course and had no issues with her at all, she was very friendly and professional. The criteria for her grading was clear and she gave some great feedback, which I appreciated a lot. Most of the readings were very interesting.
I have yet to meet a prof as engaging as Megan. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable, but it's evident that she truly cares for her students, which I really appreciate. There's lots of reading, but it's all very interesting & relevant to the course. I would 100% take this course again.
Megan is a good prof, but if you were to complain about her TA's marking schemes, it seems like she has little to no interest of fixing it. She does a good job with her lectures for the most part, however, she doesn't seem to care whether her students pass or not. I'd still take her class, because her TAs are her markers, and she is a good prof.
Her PowerPoints are barebones and have little content, and her instructions are confusing. Also, her feedback is lazy and unhelpful. She is impossible to please, and your grade will not change no matter how often you try or apply her input. If you choose to participate, regurgitate her viewpoints. 1/10, and I recommend avoiding AT ALL COST.
Megan is a well-rounded professor with insightful lectures. She chooses relevant readings, all of which are interesting and diverse. Her lectures are a little dull and difficult to fully immerse in, but overall, she includes excellent key concepts and methods to comprehend and write efficiently. She is very clear with her grading criteria!
- it wasn't bad or good - boring lectures - did not give a lot of helpful feedback - silly test questions, they didn't relate to the important readings - unclear instructions for what she wanted for assignments - no rubrics, a little bit unorganized - she got easily distracted and off-track - weekly journals - a lot of uninteresting readings
I really enjoyed her class! She kept it engaging and informational. I do agree with the other comments about how she is a tough grader but if you go to her office hours and ask for one on one help she may boost your assignment a point or two! Besides essays very easy to get marks. Just participate and answer eclass questions weekly.
She loves a good white powerpoint with no effort put in. Her test kinda sucks at assessing what you learned, some of the questions are weirdly specific and relate some of the most meaningless content in the course. She also kind of came off defensive if she didn't agree with some people's answers of questions based on opinion.
She was honestly one of my favourite professors this year and helped a lot during tutorials when I needed extra help understanding a theory or concept. Lectures slides are a little bland but the content and discussions more than make up for it.
She is not the most admirable person, and it will show if she does not like you. The slides contain no information. Do not count on them if you miss a lecture. Many people say the tutorials helped them, but I did not see any benefit in going, for me, it was a repeat of the lecture, which wasn't helpful at all.
I originally posted a review for her on April 1st. Consider that my April fools joke. Gave me a C on my essay worth 30% despite her frequently reviewing my work in office hours. If my work isn't good don't tell me it is. I also thought it was not needed for her to call my hand writing that of a 2 year olds. Sad cause I genuinely liked her :(
Kinda crazy. If doesn't like your view on a piece, will reject it and be rude about it. Marking can vary, but heard it can be heavily biased. Lectures are not engaging and dreadful.
Don't take this prof unless you really need to. The marking scheme is extremely vague and if you don't give her exactly what she wants then be ready to get a bad grade for it.
Megan is very accommodating, such as extensions and other ways to participate without speaking (good for anxiety or colds), but if you are disrespectful (ex. leaving early), it's hard to recover. More than taking notes, pay attention in class. She wants you to read against the text, SO DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE POINTS IN THE BOOK, THINK FOR YOURSELF!
Nice person but awful class. Not worth taking if you can avoid and have a better prof.
Hillman was the worst English professor I've had at York. The class was Women in Lit and there was barely any variety in the women we read. Refuses to acknowledge an opinion that is different than hers and will make you feel small. Don't bother with office hours, she will tell you it's a 3rd year course and you should be able to handle it. AVOID!!!
Megan actually is a very nice, caring person. She really cares about her students and when I was having trouble, she was very calm and very supportive, which is exactly what I needed. When I was on the fence about dropping the course, she convinced me to stay and gave me lots of feedback to improve. I'm grateful because it turned out fine! Got an A
The course was 4011. Online course. An extreme amount of critical thinking and difficult to understand readings. If you are not an english major you will definitely struggle. No matter how much work I put in, still ended up with c+. She seems understanding and nice, but then will still mark hard and give you barely passing marks.
I barely went to lecture but the times I did she was very boring and monotone I couldn't even pay attention even tho this was my shortest lecture in my schedule. Grading depends on the TA, there's two essays and two tests but honestly if you're not an English major don't even take this class
I took her lit theory courses a few years ago, and was surprised to see her have such a low rating here. Megan is pretty down to earth, and shows clear interest in her lecture topics. Let's be real, it's lit theory. She's working with what she's got. If you show up and give her a little discussion you'll do fine. Don't be dissuaded by this page!
She isn't bad but her lectures are on the boring side. Her voice itself is rather monotone and had me falling asleep in lecture many times. There are so many readings. Honestly, you don't have to read everything but it'll be clear what you do have to read. Grading depends on TA but there's many chances for easy extra credit.
Lectures are easy to understand, but I mainly attended because my tutorial was right after. Your grade depends heavily on your TA, and I was lucky to have a very helpful one who gave good feedback. There are a lot of readings, so staying on track helps, but you don't need to know them word-for-word. Focus on key details and you'll be fine.
