awful. hard grader. do not take this class for an easy A
Very harsh grader, does not help you out in the end, all children's books have something wrong with them, hates disney
Awful... Harsh Grader, hates disney, criticizes every children's book
Great teacher. Amazing class to take. She is very detail oriented so use spell check and proof read before turning in papers and you will get good grades. Book tests are tougher but the group project is most of your grade. It's a tough A, but an easy B.
Ms. MacAlystre is a pretty awesome teacher! Some people get her and some don't. Children's lit is really fun! This class is tough, and having an interest in the class makes it easier. Write good papers and participate and you're golden. Hard A, easy B!
She's really sweet and sarcastic. She really loves class participation. Read the text before classes for pop quizzes. Read the text before tests too! Everything bolded or in italics will be on the test. Really loves her job and will help you if needed. She's straight forward. Slightly tough on grading- make sure to proofread!
She's a tough grader but such an awesome professor! Likes to joke in class and has great ways of making earning interesting. Extremely helpful, will go over anything with you before its due to make sure you get the best grade possible
I took her class on line. Pay attention to grammar. It will be at least 30% of your grade. Do the assigments and make sure your group partners don't mess around. She is responsive and bright but if you want an A you will have to work a bit for it.
She is a good teacher but takes the class way too seriously. She grades a lot harder than she needs to. She is helpful if you actually go to office hours and ask her to read over work. Sometimes she will tell you one thing and then take off for it when she grades it. Not awful but maybe try to get someone else if you can.
Hard grader. The majority of the class is a group project. Also some tests that come from the book that aren't too tricky. She is very helpful if you go to office hours.
Awesome Professor! Very sarcastic and fair with grading. If you check Clemson's website for her grade distribution is 50% A's just actually come to class and try, and you'll be fine! Pay attention to grammar.
Took her for Children's Lit. Very tough grader but she usually allows revisions. 3 papers and some homework. Hate on Disney and you'll most likely get an A.
Was an awesome professor! Gives half of your papers back with full feedback on almost every paragraph of papers and gives the opportunity to make revisions!!! Offers many extra credit assignments. Willing to meet outside of class at almost anytime! Makes the class so fun!!!!
Seriously hard to reach outside of class, with the exception of office hours. Rarely returns emails. Offers a lot of extra credit and allows exemption of final exam. Only one essay and one project. Quizzes are unnecessarily specific. She doesn't update grades throughout the semester, which is really frustrating. Takes roll every class.
The class is pretty straightforward and there are only two essays to write. The texts for the class are pretty varied (at one point we played a board game and read Harry Potter) but Dr. MacAlystre interjects her opinions onto just about everything. All in all, an easy gen ed.
I've taken Megan twice now and love her. She's super opinionated but really interested in your opinions too. She's a great discussion facilitator and if you obviously try in her class, she'll bend over backwards to help you out when it comes to missed exams/late homework/etc. She's all about knowledge over rote memorization which is rare
Very disorganized. We were given lots of assignment, but didn't actually see a grade for them until the end of the year when it was time to take the optional final so you didn't know if you could exempt it or not ahead of time. The homework includes video games and movies that take up hours of time but asks specific questions about them on exams.
Her class isn't extremely difficult but it is annoying. She'll assign chapters of reading to do, or assign a 4 hour video game to do in a night. The only problem is she'll ask you specific and obscure questions on reading quizzes, which isn't that bad because they're only worth 5%. However, she uses most of the class to push liberal propaganda.
Do not take this class. STS 1010 is generally an easy A with professors, but not Dr. MacAlystre. She makes zero effort at leaving politics out of the classwork and instead ingrains it into the coursework in every assignment. Extremely tough grader and constantly puts out assignments that are head-scratchers to say the least.
Megan is hysterical. She allows complete open discussion about just about anything in her classroom. Make sure you actually read and not just spark note, you won't do well on tests/pop-quizzes. Somewhat of a tough grader, but go to her office hours to talk about your papers and it'll help your grade a lot.
She is unfair and a terrible grader. Do not recommend
She was alright teacher. Uses class time to push her own agenda and thinks her ideas are the only way. Curses soooo much more than necessary- it made me eye roll at least 4 times a class. Go to office hours. Don't expect to know if you can exempt the final (or your grade for that matter) until about 12-24 hours before the final exam. Extra credit.
Megan really cares about her students and her students. If you go to her, she will help you! Her input is interesting and her overall personality makes the classroom a wonderful environment. I genuinely looked forward to her class every day. If you love English and analysis she is the professor for you!
While she is a very fun and interesting person, I cannot recommended taking her for STS1010. Others I've spoken with in different sections of the class agree that it's an easy A, while I've put in as much work as in some of my major classes. I found the course material to be both largely irrelevant and profoundly uninteresting. Would not recommend.
I took her for STS1010 which should be an easy class. However, there were overly specific quizzes and she grades the papers like her 3000 level english classes. Overall she overshares about her personal life and teaches whatever she wants. I would do almost anything to never take another one of her classes again.
Prof. MacAlystre is a nice lady, but a very hard grader. She will review your essays in class or in office hours, but will still give a bad grade even when she says it looks good. She also takes forever to put in grades. If you have an A you can exempt the final, but you won't know that till a few days before due to her slow grading.
She is definitely a great person, super progressive. Her grading is weird, but nothing is weighted more than 15% maybe 20% (no final exam). My only complaint is that reading quizzes were difficult when I was reading and taking notes, but they also don't count for much. There are sooooo many extra credit opportunities too.
Megan is a sweet lady and genuinely cares about her students, but is super picky when it comes to grading. She will take major points off for small mistakes and the tests/quizzes are formatted strangely. Class is mostly discussion based and the majority of work is done outside of class. She gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Do it all.
Megan is the woman! Her grading is VERY tough but she wants her students to do well and grow in their writing skills. Our class was haunted house themed, which was really cool. We had a few readings but mainly watched movies, shows, and played games. Do your work and it pays off.
She seems very laid back and understanding in class, but when it comes to grading she is very tough. Even if you go to office hours or she says it looks good, she still gives a bad grade. She takes forever to put in grades, I did not know what I had in my class until right before the final. If you are looking for an easy A this is not it.
Professor MacAlystre is a true gem. She is so funny and down to earth, and she also addresses very important and relevant topics. One of the best professors I've had at Clemson.
Professor MacAlystre is a great professor. She has a unique personality, but once you get used to it, she is super kind and sweet. Take advantage of her office hours, because she will give the best feedback. I am not a good writer at all, but the comments she gave on papers made me grow as a writer over the course of the semester.
Uses class lecture as her social and political soap box. Her thoughts in summation: white people and capitalism are to blame for all the woes of the world. If you're looking for an easy A for your non-lit/STS gen ed, do not take this class. Quizzes are overly specific. That being said, she does care about her students.
Must have professor! Her study of adaptations style of teaching Brit Lit is engaging and modern. You don't read stuffy book after stuffy book; the course covers a wide range of media. I was injured during my semester with her and she was the most understanding professor I had. I was out a month, but she made sure I didn't have to take an extension.
Class was centered around The Haunting of Hill House where we watched and read multiple versions of this original book. My only problem with this class is grading. With this semester being a little different due to Covid-19, its safe to say everyone had to adapt. But, it's finals week and I still have assignments not graded. I am so frustrated.
I loved this class, I loved this professor. I didn't think she was a tough grader, I think she just wants you to be really analytical and thorough. The class was really cool, the assignments and readings were really interesting and accessible. She doesn't bury you in work but I still felt like I learned a lot, I loved the whole thing
It often felt like her class was based on her political agenda. Everything I wrote had a prompt based on current social issues. She was also a super tough grader, and it felt unfair at times. She gives good feedback and will answer all of your questions, though.
I took Professor MacAlystre asynchronously. She was extremely hard to contact and grades very tough. I didn't receive any feedback on a paper I wrote with the expectation her students have the option revise the paper, but no feedback is given to show what was wrong. This is the most frustrated I have been with a professor yet. Don't recommend.
I didn't like having her as a teacher at all. She is never clear on what she wants on her writing assignments and whenever you turn in paper, she takes off point for the smallest things. She allows revisions, but if you try to set up an office hour appointment she does not even show up to help. For quizzes, all she does is have you read and take it
If you're looking to take STS 1010 to check off a gen ed, I'd recommend taking a different class before taking her. Your grade is made up of 5 to 8 question quizzes on entire chapters that are your typical english questions where the answers are the same, and essays in which she grades as her english 3000 classes. Choose another STS teacher
This professor is impossible to reach outside of class. I have sent multiple emails throughout the course and received no response. I currently have been waiting for her to join a meeting for my final project that is 15 minutes long and she has still not shown up in 8 minutes. Probably won't show up. Her grading is IMPOSSIBLE. Beware.
If you need STS credit I strongly advise avoiding this Professor. Quizzes are ridiculously difficult given they only have 5-10 questions and they count for a lot of points. The essays are very subjective and you must follow every direction you get. Terrible at responding when help is needed. No tutoring is available.
DO NOT TAKE HER. The grading criteria is extremely unclear, and even if you go to every class, participate heavily, do all responses and homework to the best of your ability, you still might not do well. I did all of that and still ended with a B. I WISH someone would have stopped me from taking her. Will get same grade with revisions. Hard grading
Don't take this class. I learned absolutely nothing from this class. Lectures were mostly rambles about random stuff unrelated to science. Too much reading and homework. I had to write essays about stuff I had no idea about which is why this class was so horrible.
I am currently in Professor MacAlystere's class and I think she is a great teacher. She makes the lectures interesting and she gives great feedback on essays and assignments. She gives work days on Fridays to work on assignments. If you don't want to talk in class she lets you do participation discussions on canvas
DO NOT TAKE HER. There is absolutely no structure to this class. You read the textbook by yourself and write essays. It's hard to learn anything from this class because there is no discussion involved at all. This class was super frustrating because there is no need to participate.
Took this class to finish my GEs. BIGGEST MISTAKE. Do no expect to learn anything from taking this class. It's barely even a class. She posts assignments late and it feels like she barely cares about this course. DO NOT TAKE HER. Do not waste your money.
Worst class and worst professor that I have ever had at Clemson. She runs the class horribly and I did not learn a single thing this entire semester, there is no structure whatsoever. She does not communicate effectively, gives extremely hard assignments, and grades super late. DO NOT take this class.
I would say this is a fairly easy course but the teacher is never available and hardly ever answers emails. If you want an easy A then take this course, but if you actually want to learn something I wouldn't recommend it.
I loved this class, but I can understand why others did not. I took her asynchronous course, so everything was discussion boards, short quizzes, and two big assignments. If you want to be lazy, don't take her class. She likes strong analysis. She is a late grader, so if that bothers you, do not take her course.
do not like her. would avoid if possible I had her for an online/ asynchronous class and there wasn't a ton of work but is a very hash grader. my first paper she basically crossed out everything and the only note written on my paper were: analyze, too wordy, don't stereotype children and crossed out multiple paragraphs
Professor MacAlystre took over a month to grade the essay and offered little to no feedback. She doesn't respond to messages or email which again makes any possible feedback or suggestions impossible. I would strongly advice against taking this class as it was a waste of time and GPA hours as the average for the essays were a 70 and the high was 92
There were only a few assignments and she gave completion grades for discussions boards. However, she is an extremely harsh grader and gives little feedback on essays.
Personally, I was humbled taking this class. As I still needed a lit. requirement, I thought taking MacAlystre would be my best option being an online/asynchronous. She has very high expectations for papers and they are weighted heavily. Strong analysis skills are needed. Discussion boards are graded for completion, but there are not many.
She makes the projects sound easy but then she grades them very harshly. She leaves little to no comments on what you did wrong, and she has trouble explaining what she took points off for. I only recommend her if you want to bring your gpa down for no reason.
Super easy class if you can write well. Only 2 essay projects for the semester and only a few easy discussion board assignments.
AWFUL teacher. Spends the whole class driving her lesbian political agenda. Makes essays worth 70% of your grade and then grades unbelievably harsh. She takes off points if your sentences don't agree with her preconceived notions. I did well but the only reason she is on the planet is to try and bring down gpa's.
Absolute worst teacher I have ever had. She gives very little feedback on projects and is extremely hard to follow. She contradicts herself, and you feel lost when she tries to explain projects or homework. Uses class time to teach random topics. Also, posts grades a month or so after they are due. Avoid at all costs.
Worst professor I've ever had. Takes forever to grade and give feedback on assignments. Most assignments have unclear instructions. Pushes political agenda any chance she gets. 0/10 professor would not recommend anyone take her class. RUN!
Professor MacAlystre is a nice and caring person. However, I am not paying tuition for a nice professor I would like one that is here to teach the material. The prompts were very broad and the rubrics were unclear. She is a VERY TOUGH grader. If you are looking to learn from this class or as an extra credit class, I would not recommend.
This class seems easy but she grades essay harshly and doesn't give a reason for why she took points off. She takes forever to grade and gives not great feedback. She is very picky with wording and the assignments are ambiguous but then contradicts herself when she doesn't like your intepretation. She is not accessible at all. She ruined my 4.0
horrible teacher: makes the essays seem easy and then grades extremely harsh, doesn't answer her emails, teaches about random topics that are unrelated to the class (ie: one time we did a kahoot on child birth)
Do not take this class!!!! This professor gives vague rubrics and is never clear with what she wants,
If you take the class seriously, are present, participate in discussions, and utilize her help, you will do well in this class. It was low stress and was usually an interesting highlight to my day. Professor MacAlystre is kind and she was willing to offer all of the help needed for the students to succeed. The class was a bit woke at times.
She is by far the worst professor I have had at Clemson. She talks about her political beliefs and what she believes, but the second you state what you believe in an assignment, she fails you and says you are pushing your beliefs on people. She also never responds to emails and is not willing to help you succeed if you disagree with her beliefs.
Writing heavy class. I liked the Professor and enjoyed the class, I find sometimes she goes off topic but usually its pretty interesting so I didn't mind. She is very helpful in class while working on essays and walks around checking in with each student to see how they are doing.
This class is super chill but be sure to show up and participate. She grades essays as if they she expects them to be written by graduate students. She provides very vague feedback on her essays as well, so definitely go to the writing lab if you want to improve. She may teach you random things, but she won't teach you how to write.
The professor assigned a fairly light amount of work for the class, a simple document you have the week to read then a discussion board post after. There are 3 essays for the class, the first 2 require you to watch a series of people reenacting Victorian living conditions and the final one is a research essay on a tech advancement of your choice.
Worst grader ever, only has one rubric for all three projects, vague feedback, you might think you wrote the best paper ever but she'll gladly give you a 50. she is a fun person but not a good professor. the only good thing about her class is that she walks around and is ready to help you. but worst grader ever.
This class was online and she doesn't do an ounce of teaching. Final paper is a joke that she just wants you to write new curriculum for her essentially. She grades ridiculously and will gladly give you a 50 with barely any feedback and confusing instructions in the first place. If you can avoid taking a class with her do it... absolutely awful...
This is by far the worst professor I have ever encountered and it is not even close. Gives simple projects and then grades them extremely harshly. Class is a waste of time as she does not teach and instead rambles on about her political views. I am confused how she is able to consider herself a teacher if she does not teach. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
She is horrible. I have never had a teacher nit pick more than Professor MacAlystre. This is a 1010 class and its the hardest class I am taking right now, harder than accounting. She grades things so late that its hard to know how to improve. I would take any other professor other than her. If I could give her zero stars I would.
Genuinely one of the worst teachers I've experienced at Clemson. Horrible at feedback and it takes over a month for her to grade your essay. For a 1010 class she is EXTREMELY nit picky but even if you fix the things she tells you to, she will not give points back on revisions. Take any other class than hers!!!
Genuinely a horrible professor, even if you correct every single feedback she gives you she won't revise the grade. This is the hardest class I took, especially for a 1010 class its incredibly nitpicky. Take any other professor, any other class, and save yourself the headache.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever taken here. What should have been an easy A in a required literary class turned into a nightmare. Grade is heavily dependent on two major assignments, which she grades as if it was a third year grad school assignment. Avoid at all costs. I have done better in orgo and biochem than I did in her class
I do not recommend taking her. She is the toughest grader and expects you to know how to do things her way without explaining. The grades she gave me on assignments made me feel like I didn't even need to be in college. Her lectures are pointless because all she talks about is politics and random stuff that doesn't relate to the assignments.
I now understand why everyone is calling Prof MacAlystre a tough grader. Don't get me wrong, she's a nice person but her grading is extremely tough. The average for our first paper was in the 60s. Don't expect this class be an easy A.
Professor MacAlystre is very nice and seems to care about her students but when it comes to grading, her expectations are super unrealistic and tough. It's almost impossible to score a great grade on the main assignments (essay and final project). If you're taking this class for a GPA boost, don't bother. 5/10 experience.
Just insane grading criteria for a 1000 level class. I have taken grad level foreign language classes and done fine on essays, but nothing I did could satisfy Megan. Course content is interesting but seriously, if you want an A you better be ready to write the papers of your life. Snarky professor too, way too much attitude and power tripping.
There are no recorded lectures or material created by the professor. It's your responsibility to do the readings and discussions to learn on your own. Papers are graded more on their tone, formatting, and minor grammar slip-ups than the ideas she's testing for. Her grading makes it feel like a weed-out class, too harsh for the 1000-level.
Don't take her unless you're fine getting a B or C in an English class. Your chances of winning the lottery are higher than the chances of earning an A in this class.
In the BV, this class would be a massive #shrink.
I tried to give the benefit of the doubt but this was the hardest English class I have taken ever. The readings were super dense and the feedback I got on my writings were often unspecific and too late to be applied to my next essay. She is very kind, but the work in this class made me feel very below average. Best of luck to you all.
This teacher was awful. She was very vague and gave no feedback whatsoever. The feedback was very unhelpful and made no sense. The directions to assignments made no sense as well. She barely took time to explain in class. She expected us to know exactly the kind of writing style she was looking for. Don't take her class unless you want to get Cs.
Toughest grader I've ever had. Projects averaged around 65, and revisions rarely change your grade. Rubrics are vague, and her expectations are unclear. Frequently goes off-topic with political side-comments. Doesn't always reply to emails. She's kind, but rigid. Expect a B or C, even if you work hard.
Prof MacAlystre is not the nicest person and professor. I can't speak for communication outside of class because I didn't email her, but she is a vague grader and would dock points for the randomest and most trivial stuff. She would also push her political agenda, which I don't appreciate. Would NOT recommend.
DO NOT TAKE WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! I am a science major, taking chem and bio, and yet THIS is the hardest class I have ever taken. Her grading is THE WORST, and frankly NOT helpful. Her lectures are completely useless, where she talks about nothing and yet somehow everything. DO NOT TAKE!
TERRRRRRRRIBLE. Took this course over the summer, and i believe it was the hardest class someone could EVER take. she is weird. she talks about the most random things and makes you feel very uncomfortable and cusses way too much; she's really unprofessional. papers are impossible; ive never tried so hard on a paper and she would give me like a 68.
She is a terrible teacher if you don't suck up to her she will actively give you awful grades no matter what you do. She is honestly the worst teacher and deserves to be fired because she helps with nothing.
She is the worst teacher ever I think I would learn better from my mom teaching she doesn't care about anyone and is a bad person. She should be fired.
She should be fired she is terrible teacher
I was required to take this class and did everything she asked—attended class, completed readings and assignments on time, met with her, and used the writing lab—yet still received a C. She never taught how to write properly, but would constantly finds some issues, and essay averages were in the 60–70s. Avoid her at all costs. Something is off
Nothing is good enough for her. I put in so much work to get very little feedback and then receive a horrible grade. She never made the assignments clear. If she was going to grade assignments as harshly as she did she should have taught us how to write an essay.
