Nice teacher, but her first time using Etudes. It was quite a mess sometimes. Hefty load of reading to do, books are a must for this class. 5 discussion posts every 5 days, max 2 a day. 1 midterm, 1 final that wasn't cumulative and 1 paper. Deadlines are all over the place and times are random like tests due at noon. You need a flexible schedule.
She can potentially be a good instructor but needs to work on her teaching. She might be better off teaching on campus rather than online. Lectures very disorganized and scattered and the class isn't structured very well. Avoid her if possible.
She is really sweet and tries to be helpful, though her online class was confusing and she seems to be having problems handling Etudes. I would prefer if she teaches on campus because maybe this instructor is much better live than on campus. I ended up dropping because she wasn't active or online to lead the discussions.
Megan is great! She may is disorganized, but I felt she really did a good job teaching the class online. Her lectures were clear and she was online and answered right away on helping with students needs. In contrary to other reviews, I recommend her online because she's very smart and knows what she is teaching.
Megan is very nice, though I'm not sure why some people say she's a tough grader. She specifically instructed on how she wants the writing material done and gives great constructive feedback. I recommend her to anyone who wants to take her class.
Really loved her SOC 1 class. I liked how fun and interactive it was in the spring quarter. Her class isn't hard at all! All you have to do is attend class or log on and do the work. I'll definitely take any of her classes online or on campus in the near future. She really inspired me to take more sociology courses at Foothill!
She was super helpful and made the class interesting. Is a good teacher and will answer all the questions you may have for her. She understands the stress of college and helps you out a lot. I would highly recommend her!
Megan is really passionate on what she teaches. She has a lot of enthusiasm and very thorough on teaching. She gladly explained and even took time to review students writing on the journals and research paper. She does expect a lot of reading, but it isn't that hard. She is very open to suggestions and constructive critiques on her teaching.
I came into the class scare because of the criticism she received but I loved the class anyway. She answered emails promptly and was open to any questions that concerns the subject. She understood that some of us are taking SOC 1 for general education and made grading a lot easier. She is a wonderful person who gives real life examples of sociology
Megan is an amazing professor! She is brilliant, she knows the material so good! She is funny and smart, she gives a lot of information during the lecture and no PowerPoint , but still everything is super clear!:) take her !!
Really good instructor. She does care that students do well in her class. Her lectures are based on life lessons, theories, and different perspectives of sociology. She taught me that each individual student has a responsibility to contribute and explore out of their bubble. She's very passionate and it's worth taking her class for either GE or not
Good instructor. She was organized and clear about due dates. Tests were heavily based off of the textbooks, which were pretty fair. 3 discussion posts due every 3-4 days. Personally, I thought discussions were kinda annoying because they were time-consuming and didn't help much for tests.
I attend UCSC and Megan was one of the TAs for my community studies class. She's great and super funny. She responds to email quickly and knows what she's talking about. Definitely would love to have all of my TAs be like Megan haha.
Professor McNamara Megan is eloquent and insightful as she leads her class through sensitive topics such as our country's legacy of racial discrimination and the perpetuation of colorblind myths that maintain the status quo. She is very responsive to emails and comments, and connected with us as fully realized people. An admirable teacher.
Megan was a TA for my Community Studies course at UCSC. She was a great facilitator of conversation and an engaging learning environment. While also being incredibly knowledgeable about social issues and sociological theory, she was kind, insightful, compassionate, and made it clear she was there to help in whatever way possible.
I took Sociology with Professor Abed this past fall and can tell any student looking at this post that my learning experience was absolutley positive. Megan does an amazing job ingaging with her students and ensuring that her lectures and homework are clear and purposeful. Professor Megan cares for her students. I highly recommend her course.
Megan is an amazing teacher who is very passionate about the subject. The material is very interesting. She is very understanding and helpful. Please take a course with Megan!!
Megan is a very passionate professor in this class. She communicates often and effectively with her students, particularly in discussions. Discussion posts were really our only work along with a lot of reading. I may walk away with a B in this course, only because I put in minimal effort.
I had to take her class to meet my AA-T Sociology criteria, however, I was inspired and absorbed every single word. I'm relieved I took her class! She is interactive, encourages participation (5 discussion posts a week, 250 words each post), and she stimulates our minds. She is friendly, humorous, and energetic. Take her class, you won't regret it
I loved this teacher! I loved this class!
I have taken Megan for two Sociology classes and I have to say it is not an easy "A", she make you work for it. Her exams are pretty straight forward and easy if you study. Very helpful. She emails right away. Very nice person to sit down and have lunch to discuss on Sociology. She simplifies her expectations. I would recommend her to anyone!
I really loved this class. There's a lot of reading to do, but it was such interesting material that I didn't mind at all. There aren't a lot of assignments, but discussion participation is mandatory, and I think critical to getting the most out of the class. She also gave amazing feedback on a paper I wrote. It made me feel really good. Thanks!
Megan is the best teacher I've ever had. She truly cares about her students. I chose the hybrid course, and I loved the structure! The lectures are old-school format, however you never get bored! Megan is hilarious, makes the topics interesting, and truly inspires you to want to learn about sociology! Choose Megan's class! You won't regret it.
This course was informative and eye-opening. Prof. McNamara was helpful and funny. There is a lot of reading but the books were interesting and very informative. Highly recommended.
Ms. Mcnamara is awesome! I took her class as an introduction to sociology; I really couldn't ask for a better overview of the topic. You're pretty much graded on one (very simple and personal) essay, weekly participation in online discussions, two multiple choice tests, and in class participation. Just do the work and you'll easily get an A.
I had Megan for Sociology 1, and honestly she is the best sociology instructor at Foothill. She is very clear in her lectures, though you might want to bring a computer to catch up on what she's saying. Her grading is very easy if you put in effort. Megan also writes letters of recommendations if you are applying to UC Santa Cruz which is helpful!
I really liked her online class! Almost all of the reading can be done in physical books, which is nice because I have a hard time focusing on a computer screen. There is a lot of reading and the papers are long. The grading is fair. Extra credit is available. The material is interesting. Follow directions and you will do well.
Megan was a great instructor for this class. With the topic being race and ethics, she was able to encourage and promote an open and honest environment that encourages participation. The work load is larger because it is online, but it never felt daunting or unnecessary. Highly recommend.
It was clear that Megan has a deep understanding and passion for the subject. The class requires that you show up and pay attention during lectures, and she has been very helpful, when you take initiative and talk to her, but the two required texts were never specifically used. She's amazing, the class was amazing. I recommend highly!
A great, fun, outgoing professor who cares for what she does, as well as her students. During in-class lectures, she does not use slideshows which most teachers do, but has her own old-school way of teaching, which you get used to. She wants you to succeed, therefore the work you turn in need to be read throughly and written with love. Take her!!!
Megan is the sweetest and most encouraging professor I have ever had at Foothill and De Anza . She is the kind of professor that constantly cheers you on every step of the way. Soc 23 is a great class if you want to make sense of all the chaos in our society today. Be ready to read and dig deep within in order to participate. This class changed me.
Alot of reading and discussion posts for this class. Gets to the point where it's very tedious and annoying to do. Don't really need to read the books to do the posts but you have to read to do well on the midterm and final. Tests are pretty tough so make sure to read carefully. Papers aren't to hard to do, and she is a fair grader. I learned alot.
Megan has an ability to take sensitive course material and teach it in a way that is not offensive. Being a white male taking a race and ethics class, I worried that I would be marganalized as "the enemy" but Megan, along with the students, encouraged honest and open reflection. There was no accusation of personal racism.
No doubt this class was beyond thought provoking and an absolute pleasure to take. I wouldn't hesitate recommending this class to anyone especially considering the subject matter. More than anything Professor McNamarra does an amazing job of putting together questions that will keep you constantly thinking about what you read. Great Class!!!!!!!
Subjects aren't always easy to discuss but allow for endless learning opportunities. Stay open minded! Topics are relevant to everyday life. Very helpful; one can truly tell that she is invested in her students and cares a lot about their success, not only in this course but in life. She is very approachable. Awesome professor all around!!!
Had her in the fall of 2014 for Sociology 1. It was a really straightforward class. Her instructions are clear. I only needed Sociology 1 for GE and fulfill one of three social science departments for transfer as I am not majoring in the social sciences. I wish I could take her for more classes but I had a great time. Thanks for the memories Megan!
Professor McNamara is by far one of the very best teachers I've ever had. The assigned reading for the course is extremely inspiring, and the questions she posed in the response forums for each reading assignment were extremely thought provoking. I def. recommend this course to anyone who's willing to work hard, and desires an inspiring experience.
I enjoyed the assigned reading a lot. It really makes you think. While she does not really grade the discussion boards, they are still mandatory and you write a paper at the end about your participation. More importantly, participation helps you think about the material. I enjoyed the class and would highly recommend it to others.
Went into the class a little leery about the topic and workload, but overall turned out to be interesting and Megan always was on top of her game to help out and clear things up. Actually considering minoring in sociology now.
Megan was very precise about her instructions. Responded VERY quickly to emails. She was extremely helpful. Her lectures were both .doc and .mp3 which was helpful for retaining the info. A lot of reading for a 6 week summer class but definitely manageable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Megan is great! She is passionate about Sociology and it shows in her class. The lectures were interesting and contained a lot of information. The text and the reader are good and packed full of information. Discussion forum posts are mandatory for the online class, but they are thought provoking prompts and invoke plenty of opinions. Recommended!
Minimal homework with a community focus. Super interesting reading. It's important to be involved - if you're simply taking the class for credit, pick a different professor. McNamara is full of humor and is very easy to relate to. She's there to help.
AHHHH!!! SHE'S SO COOL! I'm a freshman in CC and took her Human Sexuality course at West Valley. She's really funny, open minded, and cool. The only homework we had was to read the chapters she'd lecture and the quizzes are practically free points given to you. She made me really enjoy my first year of college I would totally take her class again.
She is a great teacher and she really cares about her students. You will be expected to read a lot and there will be quizzes every two weeks. Her lectures are very interesting and life changing. This class was worth taking it.
She is a very nice professor. She helps alot and very understanding. Mrs. McNamara will do her best to deliver her message and let u understand. Gives so much support and stays after class to talk to you if you need. P.S She brought us cookies twice :) I would totally take a class with her again!!!! she is amazing
Just finished her gender class. Really one of the more interesting courses I have taken at my school. It is kind of an easy class. She really knows her stuff and I feel like I have learned a lot from her.
Megan McNamara is an amazing teacher, and I am really not saying that because I got an A in her class; I got a B-. But she teaches in a manner that allows the student to be in an engaging environment to participate and bring input to great & insightful conversations. I think that many more people should take her class, it is definitely worth it!
Professor McNamara, has been by far the most interesting, funny, caring, and very intelligent professor. The textbook she assigned were great although one of them was a little difficult to dissect. Every class is interesting. You will leave knowing so much more every single time. The quizzes are not bad unless you don't study. Workload is smooth.
All I would say is to bring your laptop to her lectures. She goes very quick, but if you're a fast typer you can keep up. She's awesome and she makes her class fun. I've never rated a professor on here before, but she made me want to rate her because she was cooler than the majority of college professors I've had.
Megan is an awesome professor! Her lectures are interesting and she makes the material easy to understand and to relate to. Her classroom environment is pretty laidback which makes class enjoyable and easy to participate in. If you take thorough lecture notes and go over the assigned readings the midterm and final are very easy!
Professor McNamara is an excellent professor. By the end of the first lecture, the professor had already learned all fifty students by name! What professor does that?! Her lectures are super straightforward, and if you ask for something to be repeated she's very helpful. Her tests are fair, and her assignments aren't unreasonably hard.
Megan build a supportive, engaged community in my online class and did an exceptional job of moderating different backgrounds and making the material appropriate and relevant for everyone. She encouraged us to think critically about our readings and helped change our preconceptions about how race and ethnicity function in society.

Prof. McNamara is great. If you have a question, she is always helpful. She is very passionate about teaching, encourages her students to critically think about course concepts and to discuss their thoughts in class discussions. She also provided thoughtful feedback to essays.
Great class! Lectures were interesting and assignments were relevant to tests and course overall. If you show up, participate in weekly discussions online, and read the material you should be able to pass with a good grade.
*West Valley College* Excellent Class! Doctor Megan covers complex, thought provoking material in easy to understand ways The course grade is mostly participation (don't miss!)and 6 quizzes given throughout the semester. The class is super fun and the topics of lectures are always interesting. If you want to do well come to class and take notes
I kno it says Foothill but I took Human Sexuality (Soc. 45) with Megan Mcnamara @ West Valley College. Megan was awesome!!! She always listens to you and the class is super straightforward. We had 6 quizzes every two weeks and 1 paper due at the end of the semester. I LEARNED a lot!!! Everyone should take her
While the course itself is Human Sexuality, the material covered within the course ranged from Human Anatomy, Social Dynamics and, Gender Roles (Schema). The quizzes are not at all difficult, just review your notes after every session. Also of note, their were no male in the course (?).
As taught by prof. McNamara, Human Sexuality is a course about interpersonal dynamics, allowing oneself to be vulnerable and, how to be supportive to everyone. This class was pretty great but lecture heavy. Just pay attention and you'll be fine.
I really enjoyed Soc23 with Prof. McNamara. She really knows her stuff and this class really made me see the world in such a different way.
Enjoyable class with an open-minded and approachable professor. I really learned a lot in this course, even though it was a summer session. She was fast to respond to emails, gave quick feedback, and addressed the slightest concerns. Exams were representative of the material with a very fair curve. Highly recommend.
Race and Ethnicity at West Valley College Pros: down to earth and willing to just talk to you, no final exam, 6 quizzes, not much homework. Attendance not mandatory, but worth 1/2 your grade. Cons: We needed 4 books for the class. She then made one optional once we bought it. Lectures are bland.
Really enjoyed this class!Online discussions every week and surprises quizzes were used to track attendance. She kept it very interesting and honest without having overbearing personal opinions. She is receptive to any questions you may have and willing to help you. I would definitely take another class with her!
Prof McNamara was amazing. She made a boring class fun. She made a lot of jokes and was very open to everyone's opinon. Your grade is primarily based on quizzes. However, they are really easy and more just to make sure you came to class. I took the class as a hybrid and posting on dicussions was also a large part of the grade. HIGHLY RECCOMEND!
This is my second online course with Professor McNamara. I took General Sociology and now this course, Soc 023. She was an excellent teacher and the lectures/ topics she chooses are interesting reads. She gives great feedback. My advice is to stay on top of the discussions and complete all assignments because I found the quizzes and test difficult.
She's nice and easy going. Affordable workload, but be ready to read a lot. She gave 2 extra credit which helps my grade a lot.
Great professor, always willing to listen and give guidance.
Fun, knowledgeable professor who clearly knows what she is teaching! Her class is interactive, and you learn a lot. Exams are tough, but if you absorb what you learn they shouldn't be a problem. Overall, Professor McNamara is great and teaches an amazing course that all students should take!
Professor McNamara is great! She is a very involved in the class, good lectures, offered extra credit papers and was a fair grader. I would definitely take another class with her.
This professor cares about the subject. She knows her stuff and is a passionate educator. The course I took did require a good amount of reading, but it is a college course. For being such a sensitive subject she did well in providing the information in a clear and thorough manner.
I really enjoy Professor McNamara's class in Sociology. She was always on top of everything and made sure class discussion sets respect and understanding among us students. She took time with the lectures and I could tell that she really paid attention to each and everyone's posts for each module. She gave credit to whom credit is due.
Megan was a great teacher but for me personally. Material was interesting but lectures were boring. Wish she did more hands on activities. Quizzes are for attendance, really easy. Midterm and final wasn't too bad, as long as you do the readings. Study guide helped a lot. Extensive reading though! Great person outside of class too :)
Hybrid class lecture heavy. Wasn't boring though, she is very real and honest about everything she teaches. Really pushes for students to give honest answers. Besides that, points based off pop quizzes(based on lecture in class not reading), discus. post, and exams. Never read the books, googled the summaries for exams.
This is really great course. The tests can be a little tricky but she curves grades. The discussions are fun and interesting. I definitely recommend Professor McNamara and Soc23! I hope to take another class with her in the future.
great teacher, very involved in the subject and wants student involvement. a few assignments, mostly writing, but also in class quizzes. easy way to do really well is to show up.
Encouraging and clear
I took the online course, you write weekly modules and have 4 quizzes based on reading. She curves the exams and provides great feedback.
She is a really great teacher who is super passionate about the material and it translates into her lectures. They were very interesting and easy to comprehend. I really appreciated the material and how it was presented and would totally take another one of her classes!
As long as you don't miss any classes and do all of your readings you will get a good grade in her class. Missing class was never an issue for me because I always looked forward to her lectures. She makes them very interesting and her awesome dry humor makes it fun. If taking a 2nd Soc class applies to my pre-req credits I will definitely take it
She earned my respect because she genuinely cares about her students. If you have any questions you can go into her office hours or shoot her an email. For the midterm and the final you get a page of notes front/back and for online participation, you have to post 2 discussions and responses. If you pay attention youll get an easy A. (hybrid class)
Megan was a great teacher. One of the best classes I've taken. I learned a lot. The tests were a bit tricky. Her questions really make you think and dig into the subjects. They are not text book form questions. I don't do well on tests in general so this was a struggle. But like other students have mentioned she curves your grade.
Megan was a super accommodating professor! I got surgery near the end of the quarter, and she was willing to help me work around it and make sure I got everything done. She curves quizzes, and has great extra credit options. Definitely take the class! It's clear she cares about the material itself and about how the students are doing.
Professor McNamara is great! The material selected for this class, such as readings, lectures, and videos was very relevant and interesting. The workload was fair and thoughtful (Ive had other online classes where the instructor literally just tells us to read the textbook, ugh). Take this class! I learned a lot and it was very well structured!!
The material in this class was very interesting. We had to read and participate in 2 discussions per week. There were 4 tests to take during the semester and 1 opportunity for extra credit. She grades on the curve, which is not bad. You will get a good score as long as you read what is assigned every week. I would definitely take her class again.
Ehhhh, no final which is cool, but the quizzes are worded so specifically to the textbook. Don't think this an easy pass, you have to participate in class discussions!!
There are only 200 points available so every point counts. You need to make 4 posts weekly (2 original, 2 responses). 4 quizzes which she curves. All the quizzes are based off the readings and no, the answers are not on google so you actually have to read the books! But, the readings are not too hard and the discussions were quite interesting
I highly recommend taking Prof. McNamara's Sociology of Gender class. I took it online, and the prompts for the posts were really thought-provoking (2 original posts, 2 responses per/wk). There were 4 quizzes, all curved, and an extra credit essay. Taking this class with Prof. McNamara is one of the best things I've done this year!
Took her online Soc of Gender and loved it - 2 posts per week along with 2 response posts and 4 quizzes throughout the quarter. There is a lot of reading so you do need the required texts. However, the material was very interesting which made all the readings worthwhile! Tests are challenging if you do not do the readings. No papers and no final!
She was great!
Professor McNamara is amazing! It was my first time taking an online class in a long time and I'm so glad I took this online course with her! While there is a lot of reading, it is totally doable. Just read what she tells you to read and you will be fine. Plus, her discussion topics are VERY interesting which makes the class more fun.
Loved her for Sociology. Peer discussion was fun and lectures very much incorporated real life situations and applications including the relation of other subjects to sociology. Megan's class is not hard, as long as you skim the reading and pay attention to her lectures.
This was my first online class as a FH student and the digital format definitely seemed daunting. That worry was all for nothing! Professor McNamara is extremely clear when it comes to her syllabus and grading! Would recommend this class to anyone interested in soc or wanting to fulfill a social science GE. Manageable workload + EC opportunities!
Professor Megan McNamara is super caring and understanding. She was very encouraging and made me feel empowered in the class. It was very unexpected for me to get the type of encouraging words to do well! Thank you Professor Megan McNamara for allowing us to share our thoughts and experiences with each other in the class and making it enjoyable!
Took this class online over summer. Overall pretty easy, lots of reading and two weekly discussions. No quizzes or tests. The readings were pretty dense but she seems to be a pretty easy grader so just try your best and you'll be fine!
I really like this teacher, had an online class with her. Just be prepared to write alot, the word count matters and the reading logs are very important.. need to read everything, because if you don't, she will know. I would definitely take a class with her again for sure.
Megan is amazing I took my first ever fully online class with her and she made it so easy to get adjusted to she is always there for you whether its about school or not and as long as you do all the work with effort youll do fine.
I like this teacher alot. She does give alot of written assignments(discussion posts). and she is always pretty much available if you have a question for her. I do highly recommend her, she does care about her studnets alot.
If you do all the work according to her instructions, there is no way you won't get an A. I highly recommend her: she's the most caring professor and really wants you to learn the material. No quizzes, midterms, or exams, just assignments, discussion posts and a few hefty reading logs, plus she offers extra credit too. One of my fave professors!
Like others have said, if you do all the work and keep up with participation, you'll do well in this class. Megan is one of the kindest, most caring professors out there, and genuinely wants you to succeed. Also, the class is laid out so comprehensively, which made it easy to stay on top of everything.
Great professor! No quizzes or exams. Weekly discussions and gives extra credit at the end. Be ready to write 250-300 words per discussion(it is doable). She is organized with her class unlike other online classes at Foothill that have you going back and forth between different pages. Highly recommend this professor.
My favorite teacher that I've had so far. The content of the class was very interesting and important to learn about. Not too much work and really clear instructions for all of the assignments,
Really enjoyable & informative class. Lectures were engaging and actually fruitful. There is a good lot of writing, so be prepared for that, but it is genuinely good material.
Prof McNamara is one of the most patient and kind teachers at Foothill. Teaching at several institutions (the UC too, I believe) and still being very present and available. Her communication was always compassionate, with soft boundaries and clear. The content was informative and decent enough to leave an impression.
Prof McNamara is clear, lectures are very interesting as is all the material. There is a lot of research but all relevant. My eyes were opened to a lot regarding our institutions that have propelled me to dig deeper, and analyze more. I highly recommend this class. If you start early in the week, you will be able to get all the work done.
McNamara is awesome! So caring and definitely passionate about the subject. It may seem like there's a lot of work (3 assignments a week) but there are no tests, and it'll definitely help you learn. The subject matter is awesome, and be ready to do a lot of online discussions. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone interested.
I've taken 3 classes with Professor McNamara, and all have been amazing. There is a lot of reading, but everything is relevant and interesting. There are no tests, so her class is less stressful, and instead of focusing on memorization or test prep, you have time to focus on the material. She is also supportive. I definitely recommend her!
Professor McNamara is engaging and passionate. The course workload is manageable, with no exams but plenty of discussions and writing assignments. unstuck AI was a helpful study tool alongside the readings.
