Of all my years this is the worst teacher ive ever had. 15 question quizzes on over 100 pages of a book. If you did not read the assignments she counts you absent, regardless of you being there with materials. Basically she tells you what you read and determines whether you should be counted present or not. Should not be tolerated. STAY AWAY
Worst teacher ive ever come by. Literally terrible. Makes a 100 level class feel like a 500 level. Stay away im begging you
Didn't bring readings to class? You're counted as absent. Overall bad teacher. Do not take this class.
This is my first semester in college & I can easily say that Dr. Nutzman is the worst professor I've ever had. She gives an unreasonable amount of reading to do & expects us to become experts on it when we come to class. She doesn't even teach actual Historical events, she just talks about writings, pictures and religion. My advice, stay away!
Whether you are reading this wondering WHY you took her class, or curious if you should. Well ask yourself. Are you happy right now? Would you like a teacher who sits at her desk and rambles. Because its torture. Don't take this class. Don't feed into her. She will be the biggest regret of your semester. It is just NOT worth it. Or your sanity.
This class is not easy. She expects you to work for your grade but she is super helpful and super nice. If you ask her for help, you will get it. That being said, she does assign a LOT of reading, but this is her first semester at ODU - it's a learning curve. Personally, I've enjoyed her class and I would take her again.
Personally, a terrible experience. Even when you worked your hardest, she will still find fault in you. Its actually disappointing and I can't wait for it to be over. Also, The only "Good" rating on this MUST be from either her or some family member of hers. I know no one who would write something positive like that. Least no one in my class.
I didn't expect an easy A but at the same time I never expected to have to fight for a lower grade just to get by. There aren't enough hours in a day to complete her assignments. Also It's next to impossible to take good notes due to the fact that she'll talk the entire time nonstop with nothing on the powerpoints.
I was so excited to take this class but it was the worse mistake in my life. Don't listen to that "good review" because it's all lies. I've never taken such an awful history class. She's so unclear as to what she wants, her readings are horrific, her lectures are painful, her pp are confusing, her voice is monotone and uninterested. Never again.
Hey lessons are pointless. Only reason to show up to class is so she doesn't take off points. She doesn't give you any idea what the tests are. Assigns an insane amount of reading and expects you to print dozens of pages for each class. Do not take this class.
She's still learning, but personally I wouldn't choose her as a prof again. Tells you not to quote but takes off points when you do. The class itself isn't too hard but take it with a different prof. Assigns A LOT of reading and work. She is helpful but only when you ask for it. If you sleep or show up unprepared in her class she will kick you out.
Dr. Nutzman takes her job very seriously so if you want an easy credit this is not the class for you. She makes you read what seems like an endless amount, but it is all for your benefit, especially if your interest in European history. If you come to her for help then she takes the time to give what ever you need. I personally like her a lot!
Save yourself. She is by far the worst educational instructor I have ever had. She has no passion in her lectures, homework is tedious and strenuous, and does not seem to have the interest in helping her students. DO NOT TAKE HER. I am sure this class is interesting but do so with another teacher, please. I'm begging you.
I took this course and I was impressed. This was her first semester teaching and I don't understand how some of the folks in my class even graduated high school. Sure, if you don't come to class prepared you will get a low grade, If you don't participate you will get a low grade, if you don't study you will get a low grade.
Nutzman made me stress yo. The only important thing about the lecture is receiving the attendance credit and her explanations of the very many pictures she will show. She grades the papers rather hard and the midterm was shockingly hard. However the final was the exact same style as the midterm so I was better prepared. She gave extra credit!!
Class is great. Professor Nutzman explains content of the tests throughout the lectures, covers are topics found on tests, if you pay attention you will get a good grade. If you are expecting a Roman battle history this class is not for you. It is more of a discussion of Romanitas and what it means to be Roman.
No, I'm not happy right now. She can be nice, but she can also be just the opposite. She has no problem publicly shaming students if they can't contribute to the discussion fast enough. She's irritable. I really wanted to like her. I'll keep trying.
When taking a 600 level course, it is required that people be able to articulate their opinions and views on the selected readings. When in a Masters program, group discussion is a requirement. The course was a great look at the day-to-day life of the Roman people. Professor Nutzman selected great books and articles for the class to discuss.
It is fully understandable that one should expect more work in college than they were accustomed to in high school. Yet, for college freshmen, one could also expect a transitional period. Nobody expects to enroll in a 100 level course only to receive 400 level work. Nobody expects the Nutzman inquisition!
Dr. Nutzman has trouble with understanding and communicating with students. I feel like I'm explaining things to an argumentative wall. She can't absorb what you're saying to her, but she will come back at you about it and displays a complete lack of understanding. Eventually you just give up and hope for the best. That's all you can do.
She doesn't understand that we can't devote our every waking hour to her class and some weeks we can prepare better than others. It's called being human. We do come prepared, but it's never enough for her. She shouldn't spring something on us at the last minute and think it's okay. I think I got my first grey hair this semester.
Yo, props to nutzman. she really helped me out when a personal problem came up. thanks!
Unfortunately, this was her first time teaching Roman History. She assigned up to 30 pages of reading for every class, gives random pop quizzes from lecture material and readings. The pop quizzes and test questions are selected from a massive list of material and difficult to pass. Bland teaching style and makes little eye contact. Do not take her
I swear she has no life and must think that we don't either. She gives endless, dead march lectures and she seems annoyed all the time. She really has a lot to learn about teaching and I hope she does because this class was a 15-week torture session.
Possibly the worst professor I've ever had. She gives so assigns so much reading and has no consideration that her class is not your only class. I've never been so overwhelmed with the amount of work she assigns. Do not take this class, unless you want to ruin your semester.
I really enjoyed her class. I am excited to take classes from her in the future, she really helps students out when they are in need of direction.
This class is awful and she is boring. A little snippy too, which doesn't make matters any better. I seriously wonder if she writes her own reviews on here because I don't know anyone who would say anything positive about this class.
As a freshman, I don't expect to take a 100 level course and then be given graduate level assignments. You could review for hours on sections that she views as 'very important' and they will not even be mentioned on the test. She treats her students like they are still in high school, not even allowing them to use the restroom! Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Nutzman is an excellent professor, but she makes you work for your grades!! She is very knowledgable and is always willing to help. Attendance is a must. She lets you use notes for quizzes. There is A LOT of reading and some demanding papers that are due. Freshman beware, this 100 level class is 300 level work!
Lots of reading, so get ahead or stay on top. She is tough, but man, I left feeling much more prepared for my higher up classes than I did previously. You learn a lot, so take good notes, and then go over them with correct spelling. Trust me on that one.
She presents a under-grad course as if it is an ivy league grad course. The level of difficulty is un real.
Dr. Nutzman clearly knows her stuff! She's super helpful when you go see her but there is an insane amount of work in this class. She keeps track of attendance so make sure you show up! Make sure you do the reading because you will write about it in class. Very clear lectures, just make sure to take notes. I absolutely loved her!
She is very nice and helpful when you meet with her. Her class is unbelievably/Unnecessarily difficult. She goes out of her way to make it as hard as possible and the class has a MASSIVE work load. Her lectures were hard to follow (despite completing the readings).
Dr. Nutzman is great professor. She assigns a massive amount of work and you have to read for every class but if you focus on the primary sources over the textbook you'll be okay because you will write on these everyday in class and this will either kill your grade (if you don't do the reading) or save your grade (as long as it looks like you read)
Great professor and good insights into Greek History. She is always teaching us fun things and this class was amazing!
Hardest course I have ever taken at ODU. Being a history major, I'm used to reading a lot however, this course load was awful. Very hard grader, she follows a strict rubric for every assignment and will never deter from it. Writing assignments for almost every class. You will be forced to memorize dates for exams. Don't take if you have a full load
She is incredibly strict about attendance and reading (which is about 50 pages a night). If you don't do the reading expect to get a poor grade for the day. DO NOT take her unless it's your only class because she treats it like your life revolves around her class only. BEWARE! I did get an A but I busted my butt for it.
Please, do not take this teacher. She gives 90 pages of reading to do in one night, and then tests you on your comprehension of one paragraph of it. She is very disrespectful to our time. The "study guide" was a list of everything we learned in the semester.
This was the hardest History class I have ever taken. You read 25-30 primary sources for one class and you really only need to read one for the informal writing. The tests are super hard. The final had half the class studying for days. If you do the work you can get a good grade. However, it comes at the price of your sanity.
Be prepared to have other classes suffer because of the amount of work and reading that goes into her class. She doesn't really teach, instead most of your information comes from text. If you don't understand something, tough. Make sure you read because she makes sure you do. Otherwise you'll fail. Say goodbye to your life if you take her.
This is seriously the hardest class I have ever taken. I took this class in my final semester at ODU and now I have to drop it and graduate in the summer because her class is so extensive that it is preventing me from doing the work for all four of my other classes. I expected a 300 level course to be treated as such, not a graduate level.
If you plan on taking any other classes, you will have to decide if you want to fail her class, or get terrible grades in all your other classes. You regularly have 2-3 hours of reading per class, and the content is graded very harshly. It is a huge amount of material forced into a short time with hard to understand readings and little explanation.
If u love reading 20 pages a night, you'll enjoy her.
This is the second class I have taken with her, she is definitely a tough grader and makes you read a lot but if attend class and do the work you will leave her class with so much knowledge. She is so passionate about what she teaches and is a great resource, she also also an abundance of extra credit built in to her syllabus already. don't skip.
Sure there was reading, but not more than any other school would require. This is University not community college, universities require reading. I learned quite a bit about world history and it was not date/time based, but rather concepts and theory.
Took this class as gen ed. Regret it all. First week of classes, she was not present. Should have taken that as a sign to drop the class. The readings are long, get ready to spend 2 hours on them. She treats us like high school kids banishing phones from the classroom. Using the bathroom is a half absence. If you have a weak bladder, steer clear.
There is a lot of reading for the class, but if youre actually interested in the subject its not much of a chore. She also assigns papers that require critical thinking and further reading. She has handouts for everything, but they can get lengthy so read them carefully. Attendance is mandatory b/c her powerpoints are for prompts only.
i absolutely hated her, be prepared to fail. i spent so much time on this class to fail. i could not even use the bathroom without her deducting points. she gives out writing prompts everyday to complete within 2 min. testes are extremely hard and her powerpoints are completely useless. if that doesn't sound awful good luck. (LeaveBeforeIt'sToLate)
She claims to teach History but her classes are closer to English Literature than History.
Im a history major and thought this class was damn near impossible. The only reason I got a b in the class was because of the final exams. Her powerpoints are blank and she doesnt let you leave to use the restroom. She also makes you get incredibly specific on certain writing assignments.
This class is ridiculously hard to be a 100 level class. If you want to focus on this class and other classes its not possible. She is very inconsiderate of her students time, considering she gives very lengthy homework reading assignments.
Do you hate group projects? Do you hate arts and crafts projects? Then this is definitely not the class for you. There are multiple group projects and the biggest doozie of them all is an architecture project where you have to have a scale replica of a Roman monument. This project has no place anywhere but art or art history, it should be a paper.
Thank goodness for grade forgiveness!
this professor sparked a relapse in my severe depression.
this class sucks! im literally writing this in her class, and i want to go home so bad. she is a horrible teacher, and is really mean with grading. too much homework, i dont sleep at night. she makes me cry from all the work. i was a history major, but i changed it because of her. if you take this class, drop it!!!!!!!! i can not stress that enough
this class is the absolute worst. this is the one class that i should have dropped when i had the chance. she is a nice person but as a professor i would not recommend her at ALL! this class literally gets me overwhelmed whenever i think of it and im close to dropping out. my depression has surfaced severely ever since ive started this class.
Homework is quite extensive reading wise. Very nitpicky grader. Treats you like you're in high school; bathroom breaks half an absense, and assigns group projects that are rather childish and could be easily replaced with a paper. If you work full time or take other hard classes, don't take her. If she's your only choice, go to summer school.
Dr Nutzman is one of those 100-level professors who will prepare you for upper level classes. She wants to help her students pass and succeed. This was my second time taking HIST 102H and I learned a lot more in her class than I thought I would. Be prepared to read the assigned readings for every class and be prepared to work for your grade.
I really enjoyed her class! If you got to class a little bit early then she would answer anything you have, and if your confuse on what happened at any point in time then she will guide you. She the kind of professor that if you talk to her and ask her then she will tell you everything. Make friends, if you miss class the professor won't help you.
Dr. Nutzman is a nice person she truly is but giving the current times that we are in, I don't think she realizes how stressful her class can get. I literally didn't get any of my grades put in because of a profile picture if I don't want anyone seeing me then that's my choice. In all I would not recommend taking her during a panny
When I signed up for this class I truly didn't think I was going to be on the verge of passing or failing her class. I was in AP/honor courses all throughout my high school career and have never experienced a teacher like her. She grades EXTREMELY hard. Her directions are also very vague along with no room for error. You either get a 100 or a 0.
I usually check this site before registering, I didn't and regretted it. I've had my fair share of bad professors but she is the worst I have experienced so far. If there is even the slightest thing wrong about a paper, she'll take off about half the total points. 2 minute bathroom break, looks like you're writing a paper. DO NOT TAKE HER
The teacher is the worst. She gives feedback that doesn't make any sense, and she is a very hard grader. If she doesn't like you, you will get a bad grade. Level of difficulty is very high for no reason. HIST 102 is an intro to history, so it should not be that hard.
What A Disappointment of a Professor ... Shes an online teacher who takes her job way too seriously for an intro course for undergraduates. She does have clear over the top grading criteria for students to follow heavily. Shell be happy to put zeros in the grade book and fail your assignments if they dont meet her standards.
This is a university requirement - not an upper level class. I have had tough professors before- but she takes the cake!! She claims to have taken it easy because of the pandemic with the work load. I can only imagine what it would be like for a normal class. Discussion posts are like doing 400 word min. Analyses are 5-600 word min. WOW!
Ridiculous class. I needed a history class to get my degree, and she structured this intro class like I want to be a historian. She is a ridiculous grader, she seems to think that her class is the only one I have. She has it where if you don't get 40/40 points on assignments, then you get a 0/40. Don't take this class unless history is your life.
Her specs for the different types of assignments are absolutely ridiculous especially for a Gen ED class, none of my other Gen ED professors had the demanding specs that she has. She thinks everybody wants to be a historian, and that only her class is the one the matters.
I'd much rather get ran over by a bus then have to continue taking this class.
The specs and grading criteria are extreme. Gives zeros for incorrect formatting of assignments! Way over-the-top. Felt more like an English, than History class.
She was a good professor but she had lot of details in her assignments. She graded off pass or fail so it was really tough this semester.
Professor Nutzman turned history into English. Be prepared to revise your paper every other day for it to be passable. While she lets you take the exam multiple times, be prepared to dedicate your whole day to this one introduction to history course.
I don't know why people dislike her. Her grading criteria seem overwhelming at first, but that's because she wants you to know what to do. If you meet the specs, you pass. If you don't, you fail. Aside from the midterm and final, every week has the same assignments, so as long as you figure them out early on you'll be golden. She's fantastic.
Her class is work heavy but I also learned way more in her class than any other this semester. There are a lot of assignments but they are really not that hard to pass, and just passing gets you full credit. Pay attention to the specs, that's all. The midterm and final are super fun! Her lectures are fun too, just make sure you pay attention.
One of the worse professors I have ever had. Grades everything pass or fail with no room for improvement. If you're sick don't even attempt to reach out to her, she will not care and will tell you to get an extended absence. Discussion board answers must be 100 words, and there is an analysis of 500-600 words due every week. Do NOT recommend her.
This professor is extremely hard to pass. She grades pass/fail with no room for improvement. You have one chance to revise your paper, if you still don’t meet her specs she will give you a 0. One good thing about her is her feedback. She is extremely thorough with her feedback. But that’s not enough.
This professor is extremely difficult to pass. You must meet ALL of the specs or you will receive a 0 for your work. You must pass a primary and a secondary source analysis in order to pass her class. She will give you a 0 if you miss 1 of her specs. Sometimes with no chance to revise.
Wonderful professor and wonderful lectures/material. Lots of writing, and be sure to read all the requirements and specifications, but grading is easy, and if you front-load all the work then the last third of the semester is a breeze (practically no work). Would definitely take again.
Grades everything as absolute pass/fail. It feels wasteful trying in this class though, because the group midterm is pass/fail for the ENTIRE course. You can't access the midterm unless your group has completed their previous work, which is unfair to those who have kept up with their assignments. A 200 level course should not be harder than a 400.
This is genuinely the worst teacher I have ever dealt with. Do not even bother taking this class unless your intention is to fail. She has a million different specifications for every assignment and if not met immediate zero
Dr. Nutzman is genuinely one of my fave professors. She wants students to succeed. Yeah she grades pass/fail but half of her assignments are things you can revise. If you do the work, read, or even just download the video transcripts you'll do fine. Midterm was a group project but graded individually. You don't even have to do all the work for an A
Not a terrible professor, the lectures are interesting. However, the homework is just a nightmare way more word that needs to be done for a gen ed. Good lesct
Within the time before I withdrew from this class, Doctor Nutzman was very strict with her grading policies. Once the group leader of our group forgot to check a single box and gave all of our group 0's with no way to make it up. The homework is long and difficult, and while she is in general a nice person here everything else made class miserable.
She is terrible. Trust me She will do everything for you to fail.
Dr Nutzman seems to genuinely be a a nice caring person but boy is the grading criteria bonkers! I stressed WAY more than I needed to about this class for the sole reason of meeting the grading specs laid out that are incredibly confusing for no reason. I had a deep interest in this topic before this class and lost it in the process of this course
Dr. Nutzman is fantastic. Very caring and responsive and wants you to succeed. Her expectations are high, but very clear. Her class was the most difficult this semester, but also the most rewarding. The work challenges you to really think about things from different perspectives (heavy analysis/critical thinking). Uses specs grading (Google it).
The insane amount of specifications she has with her assignments is ridiculous. A simple error you could have created drops your grade to an automatic 0 with absolutely no way of making it up. Please do not take this professor, avoid at all costs, even if it means going in person one day a week.
You're going to work in her class, probably more than your other classes. While her requirements for assignments are specific & it's easy to lose points, her feedback is specific on what was great & what can be improved. She's passionate about the content, making lectures informational and reliable. She's approachable, & enjoys talking with you :)
Dr. Nutzman has been incredible so far. I am currently approaching midterms, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every day of her class. She has been nothing but understanding, even assuring me that I didn't need to physically attend class because she simultaneously has Zoom open to teach after I fell asleep in class. Don't take if you hate strict rules.
Please do not take her class. Her grading specs are very specific and somewhat hard to understand, she has very strict rules such as no bathroom, no phone on desk, computers can only be used in first 2 rows, and no sick days. If you miss a class even with a doctor's note, you have to do very specific make-up assignments that she grades pass/fail.
The professor has an unusual Grading system with unreasonable grading expectations that a such as granting a 0 if you fail the meet one minor expectation or make an honest mistake in revisions. Although you get as many revisions as you want, be prepared to potentially fail if your partner does a specs mistake in the epic midterm/final.
Professor Nutzman is very kind and amazing. Her work is time consuming but with effort, an A is not difficult. She has a unique grading system that seems odd, but it sets you up to be able to skip assignments once a certain number of points are met. Quizzes and exams are open notes. There is a lot of reading but no more than any other history.
Dr. Nutzman was so bad I had to withdraw. She doesn't allow you to use the library, Google (reliable sources), previous courses on Greek history, or get help from a professor. She has rigorous grading and rules like no using the bathroom, no phone on the desk, no sick days (even with doctor's note) or you have to do make-up assignments.
Dr. Nutzman is a fantastic teacher! Her grading method is unorthodox, but it's simple and made for the students' best interests. She is obviously very passionate about what she teaches, which bleeds into the lectures. Her lectures are very informative and entertaining, and she incorporates a lot of information into each lecture.
She clearly lays out the grading criteria for each assignment, so you know what you need to do in order to pass the assignment. The specifics on what she's grading is laid out in simple terms, but if you need clarification, she welcomes questions and she can clarify it for you. There is a lot of work but it's not hard if you know what you're doing.
Horrible professor. Told me to attend office hours and spent 30 minutes degrading me and blatantly telling me I should've plagiarized her words rather than use my own. I had to rewrite one paper 4 times. Each time she seemed to change her grading criteria and became more vague. 90% of the class dropped before our final. She's impossible to please.
Dr. Nutzman was a wonderful professor, and I am so glad that I was able to take her class while she still taught at ODU. While her grading system was different from what you would likely expect, it can be beneficial for you. Take notes during class, as aside from assigned readings, those are your only other source you can use. Tests were open note.
10% deduction in grade if she sees your phone. She is a professor at the Ohio State University now, so I couldn't click a class she is currently teaching, but I am in her CLAS 2220H. She is EXTREMELY critical of everything you say in class and everything you write. It is a GE, but it being treated beyond my 5 credit hour classes work.
I took the Honors Mythology class offered at OSU. There is more homework than I have in my Calculus class, and she is a relatively strict grader. The class is interesting and not that hard, but I would not recommend it unless you are looking for a challenge. It is rewarding at the end, and I did learn a lot though.
Interesting material and Dr. Nutzman clearly cares about the subject, but the course is very demanding and grading is extremely strict. The class is difficult to navigate, and the Canvas organization is frustrating. She uses an engagement grade which sometimes feels subjective.
In theory this class sounds fun but beware, it is very demanding with heavy reading, and it is highly participation based. If you are sick and you miss class, you have to watch that day's lecture and later on fully summarize and analyze what was discussed that day. The professor is very nit-picky with grading as well.
