Professor Plenge took a class I only needed for a gen-ed requirement and made it interesting and enjoyable. This class is almost all lecture, but she is entertaining and encourages participation and a sense of humor. She is a bit of a touch grader, but she will answer any and all questions you have and is always available outside of class.
Even though Geol 101 wasn't a required class for me, I'm glad I took it. Plenge made the class enjoyable. She has a dorky sense of humor and encourages people to speak out in class, always has friendly response. She can be a bit of a tough grader on her assignments, but overall a great teacher. PS she really likes volcanoes and eartquakes
Professor Plenge was my favorite professor this semester. She is very caring and you can tell that she really wants you to not only understand the material, but enjoy it too. She is willing to help whenever you need it and is very accessible. She is a very fair grader and gives a fair amount of work. I would suggest her to anyone.
Going into the class I thought it would be a super easy A-- rocks for jocks. I liked her teaching method and she told us most of what we needed to know in lecture. I wish I would've utilized her office hours because I feel like they would have been helpful in preparing for the test. She didn't offer extra credit & to get an A you need a 95 or more.
Dr. Plenge is super nice and fun to take a class with. However, if you need/want an easy GenEd don't take GEOL 101 with her! Everything is unnecessarily hard and complicated for an intro to Geology class. GEOL 101 with her is a pain. The assignments, quizzes, and tests, were complicated and tricky. I enjoyed her, but not the class.
Great way to fulfill Science w/lab credit! Not particularly difficult, as long as you don't blow it off. 3 exams (including final) only 16% each, and are curved up based on class averages. Dr. Plenge is approachable and nice, and explains complex concepts well. Would recommend 100%
Great teacher except when it comes to exams. Finds questions that are uncalled for and would never come across studying. It's an easy class until it comes to all of the trick questions.
Megan is so enthusiastic about geology. Her lectures are fun and engaging and she has a way of explaining complex concepts in a understandable manner. While she is super fun, her class is tough. She makes you work for the grade. Lots of in-class work and quizzes. The exams aren't easy either. Overall it's a great class. You'll learn a lot.
Honestly if you show up and do the group work that there sometimes is this class is pretty easy. Tests were not hard and neither is the course material.
Took Geo just to get my science credit, but Megan actually made a science class enjoyable for me! She made expectations very clear, and she really cares about her students: she calls people by name in a 100+ person lecture. Some say Geo is hard, but it's really not. It's not a punt class, but if you put in work it's totally possible to get an A.
Dr. Plenge is an incredible professor! I took this class to fulfill a science credit and ended up loving it so much after the first week that I switched my major to a Geology BS. Dr. Plenge is passionate about geology, she cares about her students, and she tries to make learning the course material as painless as possible. Take this class!
Im still taking Geol 101 with her and it is truly awful. Her lectures sound really nice and informative but truthfully, she gives you almost no material to study for exams. Exam questions are needlessly difficult. For example on our last midterm she asked us to predict what seismic activity would look like on other planets. Bad prof bad class.
If you have to take geology, take it with Dr. Plenge. I do not consider myself to be very good at science but I was able to do really well in her class. She is accessible outside of class and if you put in the work, pay attention in lecture, and do her study guides etc. you should come out of the class with an A. She's also super nice!
Professor Plenge is a very tough teacher. I would not take this class again if my life depended on it. She seems bubbly and sweet but her tests and graded activities set you up to fail. I did well on the quizzes, went to class every day, and still failed the tests. This is NOT rocks for jocks. Just save yourself while you can.
Professor Plenge is great! Some of these comments about her tests being hard are dramatic, they are not easy A's, but she is one of the only lecture teachers that takes into account homework, participating, quizzes, groupwork in addition to exams. Also, you don't need an A exam average to get an A in the class. She will help you succeed!
Megan Plenge is AMAZING and the love of my life. She is so patient and will explain anything you don't understand until you know it. Her exams are a little harder than you would expect but still manageable. There is very little homework but definitely study for exams more than you think you should. She genuinely wants her students to do well!
On a day to day basis, I would recommend this class. There is rarely a homework assignment and the content is pretty basic earth-science related concepts. The quizzes are short and multiple choice, but quizzes and exams are difficult and can have tricky questions. Study more than you think you need to for tests, but this class is still worth taking
I hated this class and I relatively struggled with the material. But I went to her office hours so frequently that it helped immensely. She is among the sweetest professor I would l highly recommend.
NOT ROCKS FOR JOCKS (or people who do not understand science). I took geology to not have to take Bio or Chem and it was doable, I am just not a science gal - so just a warning for you people like me. The labs are not as long as bio or chem labs but they are the WORST. Ask around and try to get a good TA because they will make or break your grade
Lecture was a lot harder than I thought it would be, the tests and quizzes were out of very few questions so it only took a few wrong answers to destroy your grade. You need a bit of a science background, or else you're gonna have to be doing an absurd amount of work outside of class. I would highly recommend the lab if you need the gen-ed though.
I really struggled in the class, science was never my thing to understand. However, Professor Plenge wants her students to succeed she does not want them to fail, go to her office hours it is so helpful. She is the sweetest.
So.... I ended up p/f this class. With the transition to online learning, it seemed like she gave us way more work than what we had in class. Every week we had 5+ pages of activities, they weren't hard just very time consuming. She's very nice, just not my favorite professor. I will say that she may be the fairest geology professor.
more difficult than i expected, heavy reading and frequent, detail-specific quizzes. there's a lot of opportunities for extra credit and grade redemption which i appreciated. work got heavier when the class switched to remote.
Easy class with not too much work. The TAs are all very helpful!!
Professor Plenge was such a great instructor. She was easy to get in contact with and was definitely knowledgeable and passionate about the field of work. The assignments were well-planned and easy to follow the instructions. I was not a fan of the constant group projects, though, as my group members were not as dedicated to getting an A as I was.
Solid choice for science credit! Classwork is 40% of the grade and reading checks and participation is another 15%, so you don't have to do amazing on tests to have a A. Just make sure to pay attention and take notes. Personally thought the material was really interesting and am considering adding a geology major!
Prof. Plenge is definitely the best choice for GEOL 101, especially for people who need their science/lab gen eds. Her class was pretty easy, and she's super nice and always willing to help you. Class activities are 40% of grade, online reading checks are 10%, PollEv questions are 5%, and quizzes are 30%, with the final being 15%. Easy to do well.
Plenge is a great professor. She really knows what she was doing and was able to explain all concepts very well. She does grade the discussions somewhat hard and the final wasn't easy but so much of the class is participation. I had an easy time in this class but only 7/25 people in my class got an A. If you do the work, you will get an easy A
If you need to take GEOL101, take her. She gave us multiple submissions for many assignments, and gave feedback in between so it was easy to get good grades with multiple chances. Very lenient grader. If you're here to get a science & lab credit, take her. Most of the class including me got A or A-. Surprisingly easy (online zoom) class.
Can't say much about Plenge bc class was entirely TA-run, but TA Ami Ward was incredible. I'm a non-STEM person and did pretty bad in the GEOL lecture, but the lab was straight-forward and I feel like I learned a lot from it. Grades were based on group assignments she checked before submitting, tests on those assignments, & exams. Wonderful course.
Professor Plenge is lenient and understanding to student's needs. The lowest quiz and reading check gets dropped. Just make sure you have a solid basic understanding of what is taught and the life cycles. Everything connects.
Professor Plenge is super nice, and you can tell that she is passionate about her field and her research. The way she does her lectures is not the most productive to prepare you for the exams, but this if you need the credit for the lab gen ed, go ahead and take it with her. You'll be fine. Overall this class isn't bad, and the lab is fine too.
It was a great class if you are looking for an easy way to fill your gen eds. You do have to stay on top of it and put in the work to receive an A. Doctor Plenge is amazing and very knowledgeable.
As someone with zero interest in geology, Plenge was pretty good. She communicated the material well, and she was super nice and approachable the whole semester. Adequate amount of homework and quizzes that weren't too difficult. Made this class a great deal more interesting than it could've been.
This class was a lot at times but not nearly as bad as the other sciences. Dr. Plenge gave a lot of opportunities to raise your grade through her grade distribution and offers a lot of office hours leading up to tests. Definitely need to study for all quizzes and tests but otherwise an A is definitely obtainable.
For someone who really only wanted the credit, this class wasn't too bad. Her lectures were okay, interesting but it takes a decent amount of focus. Tests and quizzes seemed intentionally tricky (a personal peeve of mine) and were much harder than expected. Make sure to study hard for tests, do the assignments and you should be okay.
Megan is extremely passionate and knowledgable about Geology, but wow was this class so unnecessarily hard. It constantly felt like her an Alexis (the TA) were working against us. Whether that was taking a question off a quiz that worsened everyones grades, or anything else they did, it felt as if they didn't want us to succeed.
This class was much harder than expected. Plenge's tests are too hard. Her grade distribution is good because it isn't too heavy on exams. Take her but be aware that tests and quizzes are hard. She is a nice teacher, very accessible and you can tell she is passionate. This class is not an easy A!
Definitely not an easy A. Tests and quizzes are harder than I expected. The class midterm average is around C. Make sure to read a lot and study hard, then you should really be fine.
GEOL 101 is not an easy A necessarily but paying attention in lectures makes this class very manageable. I never used the textbook because Prof. Plenge's lectures and group activities were very helpful. Although the tests are hard, she heavily weights PollEvs and group activities to boost grades. Definitely take for an fantastic gen ed and prof.
Take this if you need a science credit, do not expect it to be easy. You need to study and read the textbook to do well. Class assignments and group quizzes provide a LOT of cushion but this is not the easy A people make it out to be. Dr. Plenge is fine but this was honestly just a sprint to the end for me. It is boring always and also hard.
While GEOL101 is not an easy A, Prof. Plenge clearly is very enthused about the subject. She encourages questions, has many small assignments that your grade depends on, and has group quizzes. She is funny and this class is a good choice if you need a PL
MF Plenge is not a great rapper, but is a good instructor for a topic that quite honestly is pretty uninteresting. Definitely the easiest intro science class, but not a free A. In-class work is almost half your grade so definitely show up... Plenge was fickle about some things, but pretty reasonable over all.
Plenge is definitely the way to go if you're a non-STEM major looking for a lab credit. You take group quizzes which helps and she gives a lot of support on in-class assignments. Really easy to make a B and difficult to make an A type of class.
Dr. Plenge is so willing to talk to students about the class or anything. She was very accessible (even meeting with me the day the final paper was due). The one thing about this class was the group projects. The projects really stressed me out because my group members were not interested in helping me so the assignment fell onto me several times.
All I can say is go to class. Classwork and activities are worth 45% of your grade. Also just prepare and do well on reading checks and you should be fine. Exams are tough but it's still possible to get an A if you get C+/B- on the exams. Definitely the best science to take for a non-science major, but don't think you'll skate right thru it.
This class is more challenging than I expected, and it is definitely NOT an easy A. There were so many assignments (with a ton given in-class) and the tests/quizzes were VERY hard. She also assigns seats and makes you do a ton of group work, so your grade depends on you getting a good group. I honestly wouldn't take again. The lab was fun, though.
As a non STEM major, I would definitely recommend taking this course over the other options for PX/PL credit. It's a class you'll have to work hard for if you want an A, but participation is 40% of your grade so it isn't too difficult to end with a B. The material is also really interesting, so I didn't mind studying as much as I thought I would.
Plenge is very nice outside of class in office hours but the exams are VERY hard. I was giving 110% effort to struggle to make an 80. This class is almost impossible to make an A in so it is definitely not "rocks for jocks." Be very careful if you want to make an A, it takes a lot of hard work.
Do not take this class with Dr. Plenge. This class is so hard. As someone who took this class for a credit, I advise you take it with another professor. Does not respond to emails either. This class was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I put it so much effort only to get a C in this class. Awful!!!
The Triple I classes are notoriously a hassle here. The best way to describe IDST118 is "middle school science class on steroids." I literally had no idea what I was supposed to be doing half the time and the TAs graded really harshly on group projects and forum posts. Didn't do a single reading and the lectures were boring but I somehow made it.
She's a very nice professor, definitely go to office hours because she is very approachable and willing to help. However, her triple-I was a nonsense. There were no connections, and half the class was about her own work and findings, even if they had nothing to do with the course. And the rest of her topics were unnecessarily technical.
This IDST was unnecessarily hard for a freshman intro class. In particular, the science aspects went into incredibly specific detail and were super hard even with attending lectures and completing readings. I feel as though the science in this course was overrepresented. The education and media and journalism parts were manageable and useful.
I've heard bad things about almost all of the triple-I classes. Lectures very rarely related to quizzes/discussion posts. This class focused way more on science, especially her own work, than the other two disciplines. Rubrics and grading criteria were not clear, and the TAs graded harshly. Final was only out of 18 points but worth 20% of the grade
The TA's graded all the assignments very harshly and would give feedback that contradicted the rubric. Despite there being three professors, Professor Plenge took over nearly all the lectures and talked about her own research that had absolutely nothing to do with the course. The quizzes never connected to the lectures and had a very harsh timer.
Get ready for randomly assigned groups and assigned seating!
Megan is a good professor in general, but the material is very difficult and the exam averages are like 70's every time. A lot of the tests question stuff that isn't in lecture or barely in the textbook to be honest
I took this course for my science credit and wish I hadn't. The lectures are very boring and the tests are extremely hard. She is super sweet and will explain during office hours but still it is not worth the GPA crush!
Dr. Plenge is a nice person but her class was difficult for no reason. As a psychology major, I took this class as an allied science and it is the most difficult class of the semester. The tests are extremely hard and it is a lot of things that she did not teach. And there's a lot of group work. Personally, I would not take this class again.
She was great, very nice person and imo good lecturer/likes teaching, def wants kids to come and does multiple poll evs so youll have to show up, I highly recommend actually reading+ actually paying attention+ notes. Built so you can get an A, midterms/final lightly weighted, but if just show up for a final wt no studying you'll fail, so study plz
Prof. Plenge was organized, prepared, communicated expectations well, and provided many resources for review. Some lecture slides were confusing, and a lot of important materials were only in the readings. Do them and routinely attend class and you will do well.
Definitely not an easy A science gen-ed. Lecture slides could be confusing and participation was graded based on PollEv. Tests and quizzes were difficult, but there was a group work portion for assessments.
The class way veryyy lecture heavy. Dr. Plenge is a nice person, but assignments were unnecessarily hard and the TA's grading was unnecessarily harsh. The class didn't even count towards my major, so don't take unless you're in the EMES track.
Professor uses complex terms during lecture - not helpful for a beginner/freshmen taking the IDST class with no background knowledge. Professor Plenge explains terms like you have heard them before with difficult concepts that are not even needed for the exams. Lectures have a lot of information which is overwhelming. Too many quizzes for an IDST.
In general, the class is challenging. DO NOT TAKE IDST 118 IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY TRIPLE-I. It is uninteresting but difficult, which makes the entire experience insufferable. DO NOT TAKE IT FOR AN EASY A. IT WILL TANK YOUR GPA. Dr. Plenge is very sweet, though, I'd take her lectures again.
Professor Plenge was a good lecturer, but the organization of the class made it very difficult to understand material fully or get an A. Random group assignments determined large aspects of the grade, and random class work assignments were confusing and time restrictive.
The class was very hard and confusing. Lots of busy work but Dr. Plenge was available to help you better understand material. Don't take this class for an easy A and was not very interesting.
There are easier idst's out there, but if this is the only one that fits your schedule, I'd take it. The TA's tend to grade the assignments harshly, so make sure you follow the rubrics to a T. Overall, the course wasn't too difficult, but def required more work than I expected to get an A. Plenge was the best lecturer out of the three, though.
There is no section for EMES 101 but, GEOL 101 is EMES 101 now. This class was incredibly lecture heavy and the professor doesn't have very structured units. Many of the examples that she pulls from are complex and big picture. She likes teaching EMES, however, the level of analysis required for MC questions were difficult to answer at this lv.
EMES101 (GEOL101) is not an easy A, but if you go to every class and put 1-2 hrs/wk into it, you'll do well. The exams were very fair and almost exactly what was covered in class. If you need this for a lab credit, take it if you're willing to consistently take notes and go to class. Plenge is a great lecturer and is passionate about the subject.
This class is a lot like APES if you took that in high school. It wasn't particularly difficult at all and all the exams were fair. The group style quizzes were an interesting concept that I didn't love but they were fine. The only real complaint is that the slides are so bare that studying for exams or quizzes was unnecessarily difficult.
Basically every class will be a lecture almost bell-to-bell but you get polleverywheres and they're light. The tests are made up of partial lectures / partial textbook which can be tricky because they don't always line up perfectly. Honestly though you can tell she genuinely loves the subject and is willing to help IF and only IF you reach out.
Prof Plenge is really cool! She's super passionate/knowledgable & loves to talk with students/tangent. she drops lowest grades to boost you and quizzes are an individual and group work grade, the book we read was interesting, and the final project was pretty engaging. She's also really clear about what'll be on quizzes - loved 201 w/ her!
I enjoy the professor personally, but her teaching style can be hard to follow. She's passionate, but if this is a gen ed, plan your time wisely. Exams are tough and require applying knowledge to different scenarios. Studying is based on objectives. I rate the difficulty a 5 due to the time and effort needed.
Dr. Plenge is clearly very passionate about what she does and her lectures are interesting. However, the class is extremely boring at times and studying is difficult because of the PPTs. There is a lot of textbook reading and reading checks, but if you do them you will succeed. Encourages group work and drops some low scores.
Lecture heavy class but slideshows were available after lecture in case you missed it. PollEvs everyday for participation credit. The homework and classwork were generally free good grades, but the tests were much harder. I got nothing less than a B on all class/homework but never got better than a D- on the tests. (I studied)
If you're a non-STEM major, this class will be perfect for you. The lectures were interesting and there were a ton of assignments that were manageable which helps make up for lower grades on the exams. There are no pop quizzes, and she writes clear objectives for each quiz and exam. At office hours, she will go through exams question by question.
Tests were mostly based on objectives, not as focused on lectures or textbook. She tried to help but still hard
As a non-stem major, I actually liked this class. If you hated earth science, it might not be for you. If you do the work and study hard for the big tests, then it should be fine!!
Amazing teacher, but extremely difficult to work and communicate with. I typically do not believe negative reviews about women, since they usually are motived by inherent negativity and don't end up matching my experience. However, this professor won't respect you as a person outside of class if you need to communicate with her. Disappointing.
Worst IDST don't take
I'm not sure how Dr. Plenge is as a professor for a regular class, but I am currently taking an IDST class taught by her, and it is a mess. Very unorganized and lecture heavy. She rambles on about things that aren't even related to the topic we are talking about. The quizzes aren't consistent with the content discussed in class.
She never knows what she is talking about.
DO NOT TAKE IDST 118 IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY TRIPLE-I. The lectures are so unorganized and this class is not brain stimulating at all. You will find yourself falling asleep in every lecture. The professors for this class really need to do better.
Dr. Plenge is clearly a very passionate and intelligent professor. Triple-i is being removed from the gen-ed curriculum so outside of the class I definitely wouldn't mind taking a class with her again. She is friendly and approachable, but sometimes struggles to understand that not everyone loves her subject as much as she does.
Professor Plenge was a good teacher. She clearly cared about what she was teaching however, some topics were slightly boring. There were two midterms and a final, and they were all pretty fair. You definitely have to study a good amount, but doing well in this class is not very hard.
Very intelligent but she just discusses her own research and beliefs. The class is difficult for a Triple I and requires lots of outside work. Be prepared for constant readings and assignments worth 20% of your grade. Hard to recover a grade since they grade harshly and do not offer feedback in a timely manner. I do not suggest her for this credit.
Plenge is fine. She is nice enough and genuinely so knowledgable about the subject. This class is absurdly hard for a 101 rocks class. The slides are not helpful. Ridiculously difficult, painfully uninteresting and just such an unpleasant class all the way around.
Terrible never take her Triple I
She just talks about herself and her research all the time. Does not cover class content AT ALL. Is a very confusing lecturer. She also provided no study tools for the final exam and did not release previous quizzes we took in her class, probably because she wanted to use them for next year. This is honestly quite lazy.
SAVE YOURSELF
Plenge's lectures and quiz portions of IDST118 were the worst part of the class. For a triple-I course, this probably has the most science knowledge needed, specifically earth science, climate science, and nuclear science. Very hard quiz questions and talks more about her research then focusing on material. Doesn't give any help to prep.
Dr. Plenge is very passionate about this material, and she gives good information in lectures. The first half of the class was pretty easy, but it takes a downhill turn at the second exam. The reading isn't helpful, and the exams aren't directly from lectures/materials. It wasn't too hard, but if you'll need to study.
Do not take Plenge for a Gen Ed. There are way easier As, and she makes her course difficult for no reason. Both midterms had a mean and median of around 70. There are easier A's out there.
Definitely not an easy gen ed. Starts out strong but anything past unit 4 is unnecessarily hard.
It felt like her section was very hyperspecific on nuclear energy and was too in-depth compared to the rest of the class material. Was definitely awkward trying to study for her quiz because I had no idea what specific information I needed to know. Nonetheless, if you put in the effort and have a good TA an A is still easily possible in idst118.
Do not take this class with Plenge. The tests are hard and the questions aren't easy to comprehend. The average score on midterm was a 70. There are easier gen eds to be taken
Her content on climate change is soooo OD. She literally treats it like an environmental science class, and the lecture content was often confusing and way unnecessary for a Triple I...and the quizzes were lowkey hard for no reason. The groupwork in class is easy and I like the other 2 profs; but u can def find an easier triple-I, avoid if possible
She definitely loves science, but is a poor communicator and makes exams unnecessarily hard. Took this for a gen ed and was thoroughly surprised when the m
I did well in this course, but it's not the easiest gen-ed if you're looking for something low-effort. The tests can be tricky, but if you attend class, use the group quizzes and practice exams, you'll do fine. If you've taken geography courses at UNC, this class will feel easier. I wasn't a fan of the group quiz format, though.
Relatively easy gen-ed if you put the effort in. Plenge obviously cares a lot about the class, but lectures can be a little confusing sometimes. Overall, as long as you prepare for quizzes and exams you'll be fine. Exams can definitely be a little hard
This class is extremely hard and disorganized.
I didnt like idst 118 at all, but plenge herself was exceptional. only lecturer of the three that deserved to be on the stage. take her for her other classes I'm sure they're great. the concept of a triple - I is flawed but that's not her fault!!
