Nice lady. Class can be a bit boring and attendance is not really necessary except that she sometimes does activities that give you participation points. Her specialty is Disordered Eating and it shows. When she starts that section, she becomes a new person and is FANTASTIC. When discussing other things, she's very bland.
I took this expecting to get an A. I participated, read all the readings, and only got an A-. Her A's are 94 and higher, and the tests were relatively easy, though it was difficult to get higher than a 93.
Professor Sinton is SO helpful, so passionate about her subject and is very willing to help students out. Her lectures are clear, her tests are a little difficult but if you go to class you'll do well. She is the most understanding/chill professor I've taken!
Sinton was unclear and inconsistent with her grading. She was often a bit abrasive and seem anxious in class. She assigned a totally unnecessary amount of reading (I never did it and still got an A-). She also assigned a group project that lasted the ENTIRE semester. Group projects are ALWAYS stressful.
I currently have professor sinton (using professor lightly). She is well versed in the material but is not helpful at all. Her tests are very tricky and the whole grade is based on a midterm, final and group project. She also seems very annoyed by students asking for help.
Most boring lecturer ever, not very nice when asking for help-- definitely can be snarky and hold grudges about little things that upset her. would not recommend.
This woman is not nice. She gets annoyed at the nit-pickiest of things and is also super boring...you really don't need to go to class. Tests can be tricky too (though maybe just because her lecture style is so bland its hard to pay attention)
Sinton keeps telling the class not to stress but her class happened to be one of the most stressful of the semester. Her grading guidelines are unclear and her tests are ridiculously long, wordy and tricky. She doesn't answer emails and seems like she is always sick or in a bad mood. For a class that lacks substance, it is terribly difficult.
AVOID Lectures are dry, you'll have trouble keeping your eyes open but she requires attendance at every class. She always seems annoyed. Rarely gives positive feedback on projects but is nit-picky and quick to criticize. Her tests are just as frustrating, and unnecessarily lengthy. Overall an enigma bc material should be easy to teach/understand
do not take this class!! She will tell you shes not out to trick you but in reality she lives to trip up students. Her tests consists of multiple choice (with answer choices all the way to H) and short answer (which she takes random points off if she doesn't like your answer). SHE SUCKS!!!
Even though I went to most of her lectures and the material was easy to comprehend, she manages to make tests that are made to trick you, even though she emphasizes that she isn't trying to do so. Project guidelines/feedback were unclear, grading is unclear...I worked pretty hard and I think I'll be lucky to get a B.
I'm not sure if I got the section right...I was in her Health Psych class and just got back my final grade. I finished with a C in her class: she told me I was one of her best students. You don't need the book, you do need to go to lectures-but even then, it is hard to get a good grade. She is very subjective, and gives little room to improve.
The material is repetitive from Intro to Social Psych just more expansive (surprisingly uninteresting). Material seems easy to understand while studying, but she tricks you on the test by sometimes having 10 different options for multiple choice. Lectures were boring and unengaging, which was particularly annoying because she graded participation.
I really liked Prof. Sinton's class. We didn't learn anything earth shattering but class was still interesting. She did an awesome job showing us relevant videos and clips. The group project wasn't fun, but when are they ever? Tests could be tricky but not impossible. I personally found her to be really helpful outside class.
Prof. Sinton says that she's not out to trick you, but her tests have MC questions with choices up to H or I, and she grades short answer very subjectively. Material was very repetitive and uninteresting. If you are interested in psychology, pick another psych class instead. This class was the most awful experience in my college career.
I've never posted on RateMyProfessor but feel a need to share how WONDERFUL Prof Sinton is. I've had her for Dev Psych and Health Psych, and her enthusiasm for the subject matter made both fascinating and motivated me to become a psych major. As for grading, she keeps track of attendance and gives 2 (admittedly difficult) tests and a project.
DON'T EVER TALK OR TEXT IN CLASS! she WILL catch you and call you out on it and make you stay after class. Don't take this class unless you like rude, bitter professors.
The most emotional, temperamental professor: sometimes she's super nice, other times she's really scarily mean, but you never know which she'll be that day. She threw a temper tantrum in class one day, and it was SO awkward. I'd avoid any classes with her.
i've taken 3 courses with Sinton and SHE'S MY FAVORITE AT WM. i'm honestly baffled by these reviews. just memorize her powerpoints, attend class, do the readings, and take the project seriously and you can get an A! basically, just try! she keeps class interesting with real life examples, figures, and clips. just don't talk/text in class!
Research Methods with Sinton was interesting. The class requires lots of work and the tests were all short answer. If you study though, the questions aren't too hard. Sinton herself has good and bad times. She can be nice, but she can also get angry quickly if things aren't as she wants them. Pop quizzes were annoying, but easy. It's an ok class.
Okay so here's the deal: Sinton is a fine professor. Not the best, but not the worst by any means. Her classes are easy -as in just show up and get away with an A easy. I would actually say her classes are the easiest I've had at W&M. She can be a bit moody, but she's super helpful out of class and will look favorably upon you asking for help.
Loved her for research methods! She is a really nice and understanding professor who wants her students to do well. She really helped me expand my thinking in psychology. I agree with everyone who says she looks favorably upon students who ask for help. Don't be annoying/rude in class though or she will call you out for it!
She gives you extra credit if you read the syllabus. Also great at replying to your email, just remember to use grammar and be respectful. Show up or lose out on exam & midterm. Short answer, no multiple choice. Very nice.
One of the most obnoxious professors I've ever had. She gets upset about little things and goes off on students in class- unprofessional. Her tests are very hard for material that is easy to comprehend. Will avoid all of her classes if I can!
Boring lecturer, super catty like a teenage girl. Overall terrible class experience easy A though!
I really liked Prof. Sinton's class. She was always prepared and very clear in her lectures and had good energy which helped at 930am. Posted all the ppts and if you briefly read chapters and paid attention in class, you should do well.
Perfectly nice until she's not. When I dislike professors, it's usually because of their teaching techniques or grading style. However, Prof Sinton made any problems she had with students into personal ones. I agree with other reviewers - catty, temperamental. Class is easy enough despite her attitude. Will not take classes with her again.
I don't understand the negative reviews. The class itself is interesting - one of the only classes that keeps me attentive for the entire hour and a half. She gives a study guide that pretty much covers whats going to be on the tests and the tests are set up to give you a cushion for a blankout moment. She's easy to approach and helpful.
Professor Sinton is a wonderful professor. She presents the material clearly and makes it interesting and engaging. Definitely don't text in class, just be respectful of her and she'll be respectful towards you. She gives very constructive feedback and wants you to do well, she's inspired me to pursue my love of psychology.
Lectures are really entertaining, and her tests were easy, however with the take-home portion they were unnecessarily long. Don't use your phone in class, don't talk during tests. Beware that on low participation days she shows modelswebsites that she never mentions again, but puts them on the test to discourage skipping.
When I read the syllabus for this class I was intimidated by the amount of work, but Professor Sinton makes it clear that she is willing to help. She grades fairly and keeps the class interesting by breaking up the lecture with engaging activities. Would definitely recommend!
Professor Sinton can be a little bit dry and tedious in her lectures, but other than that, I have nothing bad to say about her. She's extremely nice, helpful and willing to answer questions from students. She also tries to prepare you for what graduate psychology is like, which was a good thing!
Sinton may come across as awk/blunt at first, but she's really caring and committed to student learning. Every assignment has a clear and meaningful purpose beyond the usual Psych dept "memorize all this info then regurgitate it on a test" style. Super helpful during office hours and really nice overall! virtual child was a little annoying though
She's really nice and helpful, but overly specific in her lectures and assignments (tries to control what/how much you write even on the sentence level). It's pretty easy at the beginning of the semester, but in the last two or three weeks you'll have two HUGE papers and an exam -- beware the sudden workload! Lectures are long, so don't skip.
Sinton gives so much micromanaging detail in assignments that it's actually more confusing. She says she doesn't want us to stress but gives obscenely long papers right at the end of the semester. Her lectures are long, sometimes boring, and pretty basic/vague. Signup for the final exam project is $40. Would not recommend this class
Sinton is an interesting character. She seems very chill but is prone to randomly exploding, giving obscenely detailed assignments that are still so vague it's hard to complete them, and it's hard to tell whether she'll pore through assignments to grade harshly or barely skim them, which can be frustrating. Not sure I could recommend her honestly.
Professor Sinton is an amazing professor. Her class is made interesting by the use of examples for every topic that we cover.
I really did not enjoy Professor Sinton. Though she occasionally made class interesting, most of the time it was extremely boring as she read straight from the power points. She is also a randomly hard grader, and does not explain why she took points off. Also the final two papers? Literally SO long and obnoxious. Not worth it.
Dr. Sinton is amazing. I had her for an 8 am and was excited to get up and go to class. She is super organized and detailed in her syllabus and assignments. Follow the guides and you will succeed. Assignments can be long but if you start early they aren't that taxing. Tests are easy if you follow the study guide. Absolutely adore her and the course
Dr. Sinton's Adolesence class is an amazing experience. She covers so many interesting topics and includes a diverse range of reading assignments. She's truly committed to featuring diverse articles and having difficult yet meaningful conversations about issues within adolescence that are pressing and necessary. Recommend you take this class!
Sinton will be the first to admit that Research Methods is a really dry class. That being said, I thought Sinton taught it well and did everything she could to make it interesting (i.e. Colbert videos). She also was very clear in her expectations and grading criteria. Very caring prof and super available for help when you need it. Online tests too
I've taken several classes with Sinton, she is by far my favorite professor. Although she expects a lot of her students, she is more than happy to give you all the help you need to succeed in her class. Make a point to develop a relationship with her and she will go above and beyond to help you, in her classes and and with career and grad school
Dr. Sinton is a very articulate lecturer. She is kind and truly cares about the well-being of her students. Developmental psychology is naturally an easy and interesting class, but the two tests tend to have questions that we didn't specifically address. The final is a 10 page paper on a topic of your choice, which she graded easily.
Love Dr. Sinton and this class in particular. I took it as a three hour once a week and it was not horrible. No exams, just two discussion leads, weekly reflections and a research paper with a media component. She spells out all of her expectations and therefore makes it easy to do well. Really interesting topic and I thoroughly enjoyed it 10/10
Dr. Miller (Sinton) has an attitude in class at times but ultimately really cares about her students & loves when we go to office hours. Class was a mixture of a bit of lecture with a lot of interactive actives, which kept it more interesting and helped students learn the material more deeply. Tests towards beginning of semester and papers later.
This was one of my hardest psych classes; class was 3 exams (which were often worded pretty tricky but not impossible if you studied well), in-class assignments, 8 page theoretical paper, and 20 page research paper (which includes graphs, etc.) - research project is performed over entire semester w a partner and you are given fake data to analyze
Dr. Miller is very kind, but the class was tough. 3 exams (very tricky MC, wording wasn't always clear) + a final. AND a 20 page paper and presentation on partner project that lasts the entire semester. Definitely time-consuming and challenging class. NOT an easy A.
We had to write a million papers and you have to tell her exactly what she wanted to hear in order to get an A. It's fully possible, but you have to really suck up to her to get it. Don't bother trying to contact her outside of class unless you sign up directly for office hours because SHE WILL NOT RESPOND. Don't take her if you can help it.
I've taken both PSYC 360 and Psych 310 with Professor Miller. Not sure how I feel about her classes, since they are very powerpoint heavy and she moves so fast over the material that it's hard to absorb. There is plenty of outside work, such as papers, projects, and other mandatory books and articles. She's sweet, but a lot of work.
Not an easy course, so only take it with Miller if you really need to. There are 3 exams including the final on blackboard, 6 annotated bibliographies (but only 4 are graded), and a book reflection/discussion. The book is 300+ pages long and the reflection is a short APA essay, so it was kinda annoying to do. Def a course where u gota put in work
This was more of a sociology class. There was very little psychology discussed at all. Her multiple choice questions are so confusing and test your logic more than anything. She cares a lot, but is not very professional, once she stopped lecturing to yell at students for "making faces." She is also impossible to reach through email.
Unclear grading methods, inaccessible
After we switched to online classes, Dr. Miller did a great job supporting us and making sure we had plenty of times that we could meet with her to go over our term paper. Sometimes, there were a lot of readings, but they were not too difficult to understand, and Dr. Miller definitely provided a lot of feedback on our papers.
Professor Miller preaches how she wants to be accommodating and helpful but when you email her/ask her a question she gets defensive, is outright rude, or just never responds. No matter what you say to her it's a losing battle! She also doesn't create very clear guidelines for assignments and is not very professional.
Do not take her. Do what you have to do to avoid her. Grades in an inconstant manner. The material is easy but she asks for an incredible amount of unnecessary work. Dont believe her when she says she is accommodating, she is not. Shes rude, wishy-washy, and unprofessional.
I have a SAS for exams and she didn't let me use it. She is a strict rule follower. There are too many assignments and some of them are hidden in blackboard that they are impossible to find. The lab is bad, they just give you numbers for data. Basically you have 3 finals. So much group work which is very difficult to do in the middle of a pandemic.
At the start of the semester she said she understood people having participation anxiety, but later yelled at us for not participating enough. One time she even interrupted 3 students when they tried to speak because she was busy giving her input on the discussion questions. She also never responds to emails and her grading is random.
This is the WORST professor I have encountered in my entire academic career. She preaches about being empathetic and supportive of students, but will lecture and shame students for asking a simple question. She is not accessible and incredibly rude. Most of the class is busy work that she does not explain well. AVOID at all costs! Not worth it.
Dr. Miller told students it's okay to miss class for mental health & sickness in the middle of a pandemic, but refused to offer alternative options for attendance & gave random participation assignments that could not be made up. She is the opposite of accomodating. Goes out of her way to make things hard. Not a single empathetic bone in her body.
Will not grade "busywork" throughout the semester. No way to see your actual grade. Inaccessible to students at all times. Will shame students for asking questions and then shame them when things are wrong because they can't ask questions. Won't let students use SAS accomodations. Entitled and privileged. Incredibly rude. Not worth the stress.
Difficult to get a hold of and extremely passive aggressive. She once yelled at our class because she forgot to upload the slides to the blackboard site. The content of the class isn't too difficult but she changes her mind every other day on how she wants assignments completed.
Worst prof at WM. Rude and unclear with expectations. Grading makes no sense. Give study guides for exams on things that were never covered in class and expects you to know random things that you have to google the answers for. Class was a waste of time, tons of busy work that a six year old could do. Do not take Prof Miller ever-. Big mistake
Professor Miller is the worst professor I have ever had. Her tests do not cover anything from class or the book, her lectures are just "class activities" (busywork), and she has a horrible attitude. The lab is even worse--a research proposal with no guidelines made for a miserable semester. Avoid her if you want to stay in the PSYC program at W&M.
I don't understand why people like to hate on her. Her tests are hard, but they apply the textbook info/study guide. Her class is so chill you can basically do whatever you want. We had a group paper/presentation that we spent most of the semester working on/getting feedback on, and if she doesn't respond to your emails just go up and talk to her.
Prof. Miller is an understanding teacher in class. She is big on mental health. Her assignments are not extremely time consuming and the amount of assignments is fair. My biggest frustration with Miller is that she will not answer your emails, ever. I have emailed her many times throughout the semester and have not gotten a single response.
I have never had a worse professor. This woman has something going on in her personal life that she takes out on students. If you want to have a happy semester DONT TAKE HER. SHE IS AN AWFUL person, and an even worse teacher. Can't believe she hasn't been fired yet.
Loved the material but Dr. Miller made this class unbearable. She claims you get 3 unexcused absences but doesn't actually abide by that. Very rude and unprofessional, changes her grading expectations constantly, doesn't respond to emails and will humiliate you in front of the class with no remorse. I would give Dr. Miller a 0/5 if I could.
The class material was very good; however, this professor was the worst I expect to meet throughout the entirety of my college experience. She is biased in her grading. She is inappropriate when giving feedback. She even would talk to students in manners you would never expect in front of a class. I will avoid her at all costs. Class needs a curve.
the material was great but her grading is very questionable
I dont like her
Only one word to describe this woman-hatefulHer only goal is tear away hopes and dreams from students. Wildly inappropriate behavior in class. She uses any opportunity to see how much mental abuse she can get away with. Biggest fake I have ever met. Power hungry out to publicly humiliate you and destroy your confidence all while claiming to care
Miller is a very passionate teacher. She cares about her students' mental health and takes steps to make that clear. She is respectful of sensitive topics/triggers, and emphasizes intersectionality. Works with students and wants them to succeed.
If I could give her a negative rating, I would. By far the worst professor/teacher I have had in my entire life. Extremely condescending and will sometimes lash out at people over nothing. Lectures are all over the place as she lacks the ability to effectively convey information. Exams don't cover relevant material. Avoid her at all costs.
Professor Miller was accommodating while I had COVID and mental health struggles. I did not look forward to going to class however, because it felt rather pointless. I did not like the online work, and wish we did real research. The blackboard was disorganized, and lectures felt unhelpful. had an okay time overall
Hateful and mean spirited. I always question why people who hate others (especially students) decide to be teachers. I would never take another class with her.
Honestly was surprised by how well this class went with Miller. She always answered emails, was super understanding about not being able to always get work in on time, gave extensions, and would remind us if things were past due. Class had a clear structure. lots of activities we had to do, but always due on the same day weekly.
I wouldn't say she's horrible but definitely one of my least favorite professors I've had so far. Attendance is mandatory (even though she was really unclear about this at the beginning of the semester), and her lectures are very boring and not overly helpful on the exams, going to class felt pointless a lot of the time. She rarely gives out A's.
She's terrible, acts like she's perfect. Expects to have taken classes she has taught before taking her class. Assigns readings you have no time to complete. Is inappropriate when talking devisive topics. Has right answers she wants when there is none. Picks on your grade if she doesn't like you. Gives worse grades to normalize getting a B is okay.
While I was kinda worried about her based on past reviews here, she turned out to be really nice and I enjoyed the class. We did have one big group project but she gives clear deadlines and time in class to work. She wants to help you and as long as you do the readings and actually put in a little effort, the class is a good one to take.
Rarely ever lectured and when she did it was very messy and hard to follow. Work outside of class was exhausting and very overwhelming. Grades very inconsistently and class is pointless. Spends all of class talking about her students' mental health but doesn't listen to our needs. I put in the work but I still feel like I haven't learned anything.
I read all of these reviews and decided to take two classes with her anyway. Biggest mistake of my college career. She does not give clear grading guidelines or feedback, says that grades don't define you then fails. She is incredibly rude in class, tells students that other students don't like them, and singles students out in front of everyone.
Nervous because she had really bad reviews but SHE IS AMAZING. Truly cares about all of her students and wants them to succeed. Changed class structure based on previous feedback and expectations are reasonable. One of the best surprises of college. Taking another class with her because I enjoyed her so much as a prof and person!!
The immensely negative ratings you will see of Professor Miller are unfair. I did not like her personality, but as professor, she was fine. She presented material clearly and the class was well organized. If you did not like her as a person like me, you can still get through the class and be fine. There's a lot of busy work, but it's all simple.
The class was not what I was expecting but was not super hard. I did learn how to better engage in seminar discussions and I have Dr. Miller to thank for that. She can be a little harsh with criticism sometimes but can also be incredibly understanding. Don't let these reviews discourage you.
Professor Miller is generally a really easy professor, however sometimes her feedback and grading criteria wasn't very clear. The 3 exams were online on blackboard, and there were several other projects that counted for grades took weight off the exams. No final, but an assignment called an "advice column" that was an online submission.
I was hesitant to take research methods with Dr. Miller when I saw the reviews, but she ended up being a good professor. If you do the work and go to class you shouldn't have any issues. There is basically a semester-long group research project, so choose your group wisely. She is very helpful in office hours.
Passionate about global view of development, shows interesting videos (however some are outdated), flexible due dates for most assignments, feedback is sometimes vague, does not like it when students ask questions about due dates/rubrics etc. will just tell them to go back and look at syllabus/instructions and not answer their q, overall p easy tho
Ms. Miller is inconsistent when grading, disorganized, and and disrespects her students. She called several people out in a condescending manner. It's a bit hard to focus and do well when you're anxious of her mood for the day. A lot of busy work. Class is bearable, she's difficult to work with as a professor and not effective teaching methods.
Rubrics are a little confusing, be sure to clarify what she wants especially for long essays, running an outline by her is a good idea. She's nice during office hours, not a lot of work outside class. Test questions can be kinda obscure though.
Professor Miller is really passionate about a more policy-oriented approach to developmental psychology, so if you want a more nature focused approach this class is not for you. She lectures fast, and all of it is important. There is a yearlong group project, but work is well spread out and it is not too bad.
Such an interesting class with very real-world projects. Tests are not too bad, and rubrics for group projects are clear. Dr. Miller is very approachable outside of class and understands family and mental health issues. Don't be scared of the reviews!
so many readings and papers. it got really annoying when she started making us submit long materials/prep documents before each class. very discussion heavy. she's terrible with emails, so come up to her after class if you need your questions addressed. grading criteria can be obscure sometimes, and her feedback on papers isn't the most helpful
Mid professor, I wouldnt take a class with her again if there was any other prof being offered. She wasn't as volatile as the earlier ratings say she was but her lectures were just incredibly average, though she likes to turn details from her lectures into test questions. Doesn't know how to make a rubric. reflection assignments are unengaging
Class reflections: she asks questions that you have to write responses to and turn them in within an extremely quick timeframe. If you don't submit it that minute, she will turn off the assignment and you will get a zero. She says they are low-stakes, no criteria for them, and grades harshly with NO FEEDBACK. No communication outside of class.
Prof Miller's instructions and test questions are sometimes vague, but she is nice and responsive. Not the most engaging class, but also not hard if you show up and try. She gives many opportunities for feedback and help on the final group project, and her study guides for the exams are helpful.
So much busy work. Attendance not mandatory but you'll miss in-class assignments if you are absent. The busy work is not hard, just time consuming considering we did not have much time to work on our semester-long research proposal group project in class. Exams were online but hard bc they did not cover what we did in class. Not an organized class.
