passionate about her class... kinda expects you to be the same, covers a lot of material, exams/ assignments are tough... way too much for a 200 level course
Lectures are too long and very repetitive material in each of them but it is interesting. Clear and concise about what to study, lots of readings, and you have to go to class as participation is/attendance is part of your grade and its easy to fall behind.
Good lecturer. Assigns readings you have to read if you wanna pass (except txtbk). Assignments are purposefully (too) vague. Material is hard to follow sometimes. Gives most test questions out before the test, but grades them with extreme harshness. Come to class, she takes attendance!! She could use some more color in her interaction with class.
Distractingly hot. Couldn't focus.
Clearly her first attempt at teaching a large class. Assigns a lot of reading, but you can pick and choose what's important based on lecture. Midterm and final were very fair; if you went to lecture and did readings it was easy. Paper was vague and unclear. She's very helpful and understanding. Easy if you took INTD200 before, similar material.
She's a super nice professor. Some of the grading was a little harsh on the midterm, but I think she made up for it with better grades on the paper and final. Most of the info is on the slides, but her classes are definitely interesting and she's funny. It's very similar to INTD200 so can be an easy A.
One of the most caring profs I've had at McGill. Somehow made theory, a course I dreaded bearable and easy to understand. Her lectures are clear and cover everything that you would need from the readings. Provides lots of sample quotes which she'll actually use on the exams. Need to go to lecture and take good notes/review a lot to do well. AMAZING
One of the sweetest, most caring profs in the sociology department. Lectures are 100% concise. I didn't read any of the books (LOTS of assigned reading) and still did very well on tests because everything you need to succeed is provided in lecture. All you need to do is attend & take word-for-word notes. If you skip lectures, you won't do well.
Great prof; one of the best Ive had in my 4 years at McGill. She is brilliant and very knowledgeable in social theory. And a great lecturer too. Her lectures are engaging, insightful and make theory easily digestible and interesting. She is also a great human being. I have been to her office several times and shes been very helpful and understand
Mehri is our angel! I'm a 3rd year student, and I gotta say she's the first professor I've had so far who truly cares about how students learn. Super friendly, funny, and intelligent. An amazing teacher who deserves so much love from students.
One of the only professors that cares about their students at McGill, takes SO much time out of her day to meet with students/ hold extra office hours and review sessions. She is super passionate about her material and this really shows in her lectures. However, her midterms are EXTREMELY difficult and very hard to do well in. Good, but tough class
Shes dedicated, passionate, and intelligent. Her lectures are great and provide everything you need to know. Also very approachable and kind. Would absolutely recommend taking her classes.
Mehri is one of the best profs I've ever had at McGill. She is sweet and caring. She is very passionate about the course and goes out of her way to schedule extra review sessions even when it's the TA's jobs. She's also the first prof I ever see that showed up to the final exam at the beginning and stayed for the full 3 hours.
She sets a good example of what a professor should be like, dedicated and passionate about the course and spreads that passion to her students as well. Sociological theory is literally her life. She gives great lectures so make sure you take notes, it's worth it. The main catch is that this course is very difficult, you'll have to read a lot.
An outstanding professor. Handsdown the best I've had at McGill. Her lectures are very organized and engaging. Has solid knowledge in social theory. She's VERY caring and kind. She goes out of her way to provide extra support to her students. REALLY AMAZING!
She's an amazing lecturer and really goes out of her way to help her students succeed. Although the content is somewhat challenging, she's somehow capable of making everything easy. PS: if you see yourself as an anxiety-prone perfectionist, buckle up! You will be scared very often; but in the end you will find the experience quite rewarding.
Mehri was my TA in INTD 200 and now INTD 350. She is so amazing at what she does and also so passionate and open to conversion. I hope I can take one of her classes next year!
She was my TA for SOCI333 Social Stratification, her conference was more clear and organized than the prof.
Available outside of class, and friendly! Encourages you to have your own arguments, and is willing to engage with them. Includes her life experience, which brings a unique and rewarding dynamic. Heavy heavy readings, but I feel better having known them, and will use the material in this class throughout the rest of my degree. In short, phenomenal
Ghazanjani is an excellent teacher. She is enthusiastic about the material, explains things clearly and has organized powerpoints. What more can you ask for? She has great little anecdotes and encourages participation. Not flashy, just a genuinely a solid teacher. SOCI318 is also a fun/interesting summer class.
She really cares whether her students do well. She is very patient to questions and welcome discussion. She also provides sample questions for the final. Although sociology of media is not her expertise, she gives very clear and organised lectures. This is rare!
Final exam was MUCH more difficult than we initially expected, but she curved up. This is an overall good course. She is also good lecturer.
She's knowledgeable and her lectures are very organized and clear. Final exam was tough but she made up for it by curving up. She's approachable and always available before and after class. Overall this is a really interesting class. We watched and discussed movies, documentaries etc I learned a lot and absolutely recommend it.
You can tell she enjoys lecturing and scripts herself, but is uncomfortable at introducing concepts that are not in her domain, so she often repeats herself/ argues her own points rather than answering questions (often contradicts herself). Evaluations were also largely disjointed from the class material. Unfortunate given the cool course topic.
You better have a good history background.
The textbook material was easy and straight-forward, but Professor Ghazanjani made this class terrible. Towards the end, lots of the content taught was incorrect, including faulty sample questions and unhelpful explanations. The course structure was also counter-intuitive - two non-cumulative midterms and a cumulative final exam.
Brilliant, dedicated and very passionate. THis was my second course with prof Ghazanjani and learned alot from her. She treats her students with respect and is very approachable. In one word AMAZING.
Her lectures are very organized and clear. I liked the essay exams, she encourages her students to have their own arguments. She is very patient and her lectures are engaging. One of the best courses I have taken at McGill. Spends sooo much of her time on review sessions and office hours. Shares her interesting life stories and is very funny.
Professor Mehri is an awesome teacher. Somehow made a boring methodology course very interesting and engaging. Always organized, passionate, and available. Gave us lots and lots of sample questions . Exams were fair and clear. I also appreciated her sharing her research experiences with us. Will take more courses with her.
Exams were heavy: ALL ESSAYS. But she gives good feedback and really wants her students to do well. Shes a passionate lecturer and has solid knowledge in sociology. She always welcomes her students to discuss and share their positions. This is very rare. The most caring teacher I have had in my 2 yrs at McGill.
I found the essay format rather challenging ( 3 essays in 3 hrs for the final exam!) but her grading criteria are clear. Besides, she provides many sample questions which she actually uses in the exam ( which I really appreciated). Came to the final exam and stayed for 3 hours! I never saw a prof care so much about her students. lectures are great.
This is a reading-heavy course, so be prepared to read A LOT. Apart from that, its a great course and the topics covered are very relevant. Overall I found the experience very rewarding. Dont miss the lectures if youre aiming for a good grade.
Professor Ghazanjani is one of the best profs Ive had at McGill. Her lectures are clear and concise (always brings in some of her own research experiences). The Multiple Choice part of the exams was tricky, although she did provide many sample questions which really helped. I absolutely recommend taking her courses.
Ms Ghazanjani is an excellent teacher and really knows what shes talking about. You can tell she really wants her students to succeed. One of the most passionate and engaging lecturers I have seen. Exams were very fair and she used sample questions for final. Would take more courses with her I wasnt graduating!
Awesome prof & amazing lectures ( took both soci211 & soci307 with her in the fall.)
Her lectures are passionating. Best sociology class I ever took at McGill. We had 2 midterms and one final exam, which were graded fairly. Love her!
Mehri was a really cool professor to have. The way she talked about the stuff she taught you could feel she was genuinely interested in it. 8:30 classes are tough, but she was super nice and tried to make the classes interesting. The content's pretty useful, although I wouldn't really advise to take this class if you just wanna discover sociology.
Best sociology course. She brings in her own experiences as student activist which is a plus in a course on social movements. Knows the topic very well and gives engaging lectures. A super friendly prof.
Shes passionate about the material and is a very good lecturer. Shes also very helpful in office hours and gives good feedback. Loved the course content and her lecturing style. Im not an early morning person but never miss a class. Will take more of her classes in future.
The class was awesome. The exams and paper were well made and portioned appropriately. The instructor was funny, knowledgeable, caring and always willing to help students.
Professor Ghazanjani is very genuine and knowledgeable, but I wouldn't recommend SOCI 318 as a "lighter" summer course. There are a lot of readings and she's a tough grader when it comes to written work. The final exam was unnecessarily tricky, which is unfortunate given the interesting topics. A good class if you like a challenge!
This course was great and I learned alot from it. The content is not easy but the prof certainly makes it interesting. She gave a lot of sample questions and instructions for the exam and essays and was very helpful during office hours
I've found most soci courses to be very dry and theory-heavy, but Mehri's class was totally not! The course was super relevant to today's world and actually useful. Very interesting content: it's basically a film class, through a soci lens. It definitely wasn't an easy A, but if you pay close attention to lectures and readings you should be fine.
She explains concepts and theories super clearly. She's also very helpful outside of class and during office hours. However, she is WAY too harsh of a grader, even when she grades assignments "generously," and she gives LOADS of hard, heavy readings every course. If you're looking for a class to boost your GPA, do not take hers.
Her lectures are exceptionally well structured, and she tends to be very receptive to students' comments and feedbacks. However, her passion for details and anecdotes can sometimes create some confusion while studying for the exams. Her grading scheme is also very generous, and the reading load is small compared to other courses I have taken.
Mehri is a gem within the sociology department at McGill. Had the pleasure of having her twice. Her written exams are easy: she offers practice questions and tells you exactly what she's looking for. She was an easy grader. For our online MC exam, she curved everyone up 13%. She is kind, passionate and interesting, however she speaks very softly.
I took an online course with her this summer (intro level) and her lectures were very clear, memorable, and used easy examples to make sure you understood the concepts. Plus she curved up at the end of the term on top of what were very easy + reasonable exams. IDK how she is with written/essay questions but her full MC classes were good!
Given the unsual circumstances with the pandemic, she has been very lenient and understanding. All her recorded lectures are clear and concise as she offers examples that are applicable to current events. She provides enough support and preparation before midterms through Zoom Q and A sessions. Wish I could have experienced her classes in person.
I only received a good grade because I had taken soci and psychology research courses before, but I would imagine if someone is unfamiliar with these topics, relying on this professor to understand these topics may not help them at all. The final take home essay was very poorly organized, and students were given no clear grading criteria.
Her lectures were super organized, clear, and engaging. She provided several sample questions for the exams and curved up the grades. Very helpful during her office hours and Q/As. Final exam was a 3-day take home assignment with fairly easy questions and clear instructions. I am a U0 and this was an easy elective. Will take more courses with her.
SOCI211 was an interesting and easy course. Despite the pandemic, the course was presented in an organized and well-structured way. Accessible and helpful prof, easy-to-follow lectures, and fair exams. I highly recommend it to anyone in their first or second year.
The course material isn't hard (especially if you have previously done RM and QM in Cegep), but the prof made the class hard for no reason. The final was poorly organized and the prof didn't prepare the students for it properly. All tests were harder than needed to be (she had to curve up all the test grades because they were so low).
She seems really nice and is very thorough in her lectures. The final grade is made up of 2 midterms and a final. The material is very straightforward but the exam questions are always very confusing and difficult to answer. No reading required.
Her lectures are amazing and she is very accommodating. The most approachable and caring prof I've had at McGill. Exams aren't difficult if you follow her lectures. Her grading scheme is clear and fair. very helpful in Q&As
The best INTD course I have taken so far. She is well spoken and knowledgeable and knows what she's talking about. However this course is assignment heavy and I wouldn't recommend it if you're not good at writing analytical essays. She's not a particularly harsh grader but expects the best. Made this course a great experience despite the pandemic.
Prof Ghazanjani is one of the most committed and caring profs I have had in my three years at McGill. She has a passion for the topic, intellectual rigour, and is always available for her students. She brought her own research experience to this course which was a plus.
The professor refuses to respond to e-mails in the last 4-5 weeks of class. Grading is subjective to other students, per their own admission (i.e. if you have a few brilliant students that the professor knows well, there is no chance to get an A). Their pre-recorded lectures are dense and useless after the first half. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE.
INTD397 (ethnic conflict) was an interesting and engaging course taught by a genuinely nice and knowledgeable prof. Truly one of the best.
INTD 397 (states and development) for Winter 2021 was a wonderful class with a wonderful professor. Prof Ghazanjani is very knowledgeable, passionate, and very easy to engage with in and outside of class; plus, she offers review sessions. She assigns typical quantities of readings for INTD/PoliSci courses, and you'll need to read them to do well.
Prof. Ghazanjani is super nice and approachable at office hours. However, her class seemed a little hard to me, especially as a summer intensive. I found the midterm and final really hard and not reflective of what we learned in class. However, she's always happy to help if you have questions or concerns.
Dr. Ghazanjani is a great lecturer and caring professor. Made a basic research course interesting and accessible. Her exams were weirdly worded making them unnecessarily difficult and not really reflective of what we have learned. To make up for this she grades the assignments generously and curves the exams bringing up the average significantly.
I dont know why her reviews are so good. I didnt find anything good. Her lectures were word for word the textbook. She refused to correct her mistakes on the midterm saying its going to take a long time but a week after the final, she had our overall grades. During a review she disabled the chat and no questions. No feedback on assignments.
One of the best courses taught by a very knowledgeable and passionate prof. Really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Highly recommend.
Dr. Ghazanjani is passionate and knowledgeable. Definitely one of my favorite classes at McGill. Just be aware that this is not an easy A class. Plenty of heavy reading, difficult exam questions and she is a harsh grader for essays.
Professor Ghazanjani's teaching and evaluation methods have their benefits and drawbacks. She was passionate about the course material, and explained content thoroughly and clearly in lectures. However, her multiple choice questions were unnecessarily difficult and tricky to understand, even if you had a good understanding of course material.
Mehri is a good teacher. I didn't think this class would be interesting but it was! She really loves it when people engage in the class and share their own stories related to what is discussed in class. We only had take-home exams which were essays and an individual (or you can do it in a group) paper. If you show up to class, you'll pass.
Prof is really interesting and knowledgeable. She has great story to share! All assignments were take homes. However, did not receive a lot of feedback after each paper. When getting a 77, it would be helpful to know what to improve for the next paper but this did not happen. Still recommend this course!
Lectures were great and she was always available outside and after class. Prof Ghazanjani is very knowledgeable and passionate about her work. A fair grader.
bad vibes
she's very nice outside of class when you talk to her 1on1 but her grading scheme is wack (wayyy too strict) and her lectures are often really content heavy. i rarely talk in class bc i'm afraid of stating an opinion that goes against hers. also exam guidelines are extremely strict and stressful. super nice person tho
No extensions for the final under no circumstances. Most apathetic professor I've ever had.
Terrible lecturer, barely reiterated what was on the slides and had little else to contribute. Positions her own beliefs as superior, really hard to do well if you don't just repeat what she's said rather than what you think is right (she's very liberal, pro-capitalism). Super inaccessible too, doesn't reply to emails during exam period. Avoid.
This was my first soci course; not an easy course if you don't have any background in the subject But prof Ghazanjani is an amazing lecturer. Her lectures are very organized and cover everything your need to know from the readings. She's always accessible outside of class. The exams were 48hrs long and fair. One of the best profs I had at mcgill.
between great and awesome, prof ghazanjani was a real gem. her lectures are very content heavy and she does go fast, but she is very comprehensible and explains everything in sufficient detail. she was always very caring and reasonably understanding (accommodating but doesn't let people walk on her). fair assessments, very fair grading. I like her
The class was interesting but there was so much content to know and memorize. Also, how she grades the essays (or how her TAs grade the essays) is so strict and you lose so many points over the smallest things. It shows that she is passionate about what she teaches but the midterm and final ruined the class for me.
She specialized in ethnic conflict and nationalism so knew what she was talking about. Her lectures are great and cover everything you need to know for the exams. spends class time on exam and assignment instructions which is a plus. course load and evaluation were fair. one of the best courses I've taken for my major in international development.
Not only the lectures are very interesting, but it clearly shows that she is very passionate about what she teaches, which makes her lectures quite great. Although evaluations are mostly reading-based, she takes time to cover them in class and is always available to answer questions outside of class.
Very interesting and complete lectures, she is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about her topic. The exams are hard though, and her expectations are high. This class demands a lot of time and lots of reading but also a very very interesting course that I don't regret taking at all. There is a group project as well
Truly an amazing prof, she was so knowledgeable and passionate about the content. The class lectures are very content-heavy, but I loved this class and loved the prof. She is also happy to discuss more outside of class regarding any questions and is very approachable. Definitely the best soci class I've taken for my minor. Highly recommend!!!
The class content was interesting but she was strict when grading and wouldn't budge. She had us do a 1000 word group essay with 4-5 people, which was incredibly difficult to coordinate. When I went to her regarding issues with my group, she did not provide any solutions and just repeated that solo work would result in a 0%.
Absolutely do not take INTD356 or any quantitative class with this instructor. The grading criteria was unclear, and instructions for the 35% assignment was vague. The lectures more confusing than helpful and the midterm average was failing which she took as a issue with the class not the way it was marked (unfair) or her lack of teaching ability.
Avoid. She does not offer clarifications on guidelines and gets frustrated when students ask too many questions. Similarly, she offered no flexibility to make arrangements when the whole class was struggling. The class also did very poorly on the midterm and she seemed very surprised while also taking no accountability for her teaching approach.
BEWARE!! This class/prof combo was a train-wreck. Huge group project with vague guidelines that she REFUSED to answer questions for. Midterm was unfinishable and needed a 12% bump to get to a B. Completely inaccessible outside of class (she has another job she prioritizes over lecturing). I genuinely don't think she qualified to teach stats.
Very unclear about the assignments and exams. Does not communicate clearly her expectations for what she wants and grades strictly to those uncommunicated expectations. I had taken another stats class previously and all her lectures made me more confused than anything else. Slides are not prepared well. Midterm grading was unreasonable and unfair.
Absolutely ridiculous delivery of what could be a very fair and intellectually fulfilling course. I'm in econ and this is for my minor so I have taken stats and done well but almost failed her midterm bc of the grading scheme. In a 10 mark question if you got a SINGLE thing incorrect (e.g. not rounding up), you'd get 0/10 marks. Unbelievable
She is clearly passionate and the lectures are amazing, the topics great. However its not recorded and its impossible to understand the lecture without being there so skip class or be sick you won't pass. So many lectures, she grades very harshly and makes her MCQ final uncessarily difficult. Would definitely not take again.
Interesting subject unsatisfactory teaching. Came across as lazy. Graded by a group essay (78 average), midterm essay (77), and final. Final was 40 multiple choice questions worth 40% of the total grade. These were unnecessarily difficult and made to trick students. All the questions from the practice final were in the real final. Would not take.
Very sweet! Tests were VERY hard. Small amount of questions (20ish on midterms and 60ish on final) ended up always removing questions which was sweet. Questions were extremely specific from both textbook and stuff just said in class so good idea to be there and pay attention!!! very similar to other soci classes content wise, but not grading wise
Made an easy class way too difficult, unfair/inconsistent grading, had to curve midterm just for most people to even pass, no communication with the TA. Conferences did not cover what was tested on midterm
The grading criteria were not clear and what she expected on the midterm and final was not clear. She also expects many elements in your answers but will never explicitly ask for them in the question... She had to curve both midterm and the final. Go talk to her and ASK questions in class because else you are cooked.
This was for INTD 398, the class content itself was very interesting, but I feel the grading was way too harsh for a 300 level class. The level of analysis she expects out of her students is not what anyone was able to achieve for a timed essay and I don't know anyone who got an A. She is a good lecturer, but quite old school and strict.
Super vague project details. The class content was difficult to understand and I ended up teaching myself most of the material. She seemed annoyed when you asked for clarification or questions in class. She said she had a lot on her plate with another full time job and teaching multiple classes, but the student's are the ones who paid for it.
She's very passionate about what she teaches
I took her last semester, and it's an amazing class. She is so passionate about what she teaches and so open to conversations. Sit in front so she can recognize you! Definitely a tough grader but her remarks are pretty useful. Readings are important - youll have to incorporate them in exams
She is very sweet, but unfortunately, her lectures are very long and not very engaging. Very heavy lectures with a lot of information, and we barely touch on the readings, which you are expected to mention in papers. She is clearly very knowledgeable, but I unfortunately could not get myself to be interested in her classes.
She's clearly very intelligent, but she mentioned she was handling 2 jobs at once whilst teaching and it showed. Class was pointless, just reading off slides and the slides were all written with AI! Even the exam/midterm instructions were AI, everything felt super general as a consequence.
