Melanie is awesome. She will talk to you like you are her friend, not just her student. Makes the topics at hand interesting and funny..highly recommended!
She is so cool. She is challenging and creative!
Great english teacher, but kind of tough.
excellent teacher. keeps students interested and loves to hear our opinions!! she will help you if you need help at any time. if you are going to take this class take her!!!
I loved taking this class, She could not have been more helpfull. She is really interested in what you have to say, and trys to help you along should you ever need any help.
I love Dr. Eckford-Prossor! She is a great professor.
I think she is a good teacher, I just didn't get to have her in the class room. But don't take her online class. She isn't that good with responding to emails. But she is very interested in the student and is there to help them.
One of the best Professors at SBCC. Her thesis is for the student to suceed. And you will if you do the work.
Good teacher only if you are her "teacher's pet"
Made American lit a fun class to take. A lot more work than I thought was necessary but in the end I had a lot of fun. Overall she is very fair and entertaining.
she was a great teacher. She was down to earth, clever, and creative. Her reading is alittle dull, but she is a great teacher.
Excellent teacher. takes a genuine interest in your progress in her class. you can tell that she really enjoys teaching her subject.

Terrible teacher! Failed me when i had a "B" claimed i plagerized because of one sentence i forgot to cite. 1 sentence. Said she was making an example of me because of past hangups. filed a complaint still awaiting appeal.
Excellent professor and I learned a lot. Highly recommanded.

I am a passionate English student but I really disliked this class. This woman is no doubt intelligent, but her clarity is completely lacking. I come out of lecture more confused than I was going into it. The reading was not engaging. I got low grades on papers I worked hard on without any real explanation why. If you love English avoid this class.
dr. prossor is very funny and intelligent, and obviously enjoys teaching. i enjoy going to her class even though she is a bit confusing. she will always answer your questions. you should take her!
Eckford-Prossor is the best professor at the school. Highly recommended, she will make any class fun and interesting.
only take this teacher if you have high interest in learning on how not to plagiarize. she might be a cool person outside of class but should not be teaching. very unorganized and does a horrible english accent for the hell of it from time to time.
her lectures are always open ended(ie. no closure). She is a very energetic teacher who is funny and interesting. I only had 3 major papers the whole class. Not bad considering it was Honors. It's a worth it class.
Dr. Eckford-Prossor is why I like school! She was challenging but helped you succeed. I enjoyed going to her class...it was the only one that semester I did'nt skip! If you enjoy learning you will enjoy her class.
It is an interesting english class. She is not boring, clear and eager to help the student. I became a better essay writer thanks to her class.
Great teacher. She knew every student's name after the second day of lecture. Challenging, but always willing to lend a helping hand. She cares about her job, and cares if you want to do well in her class. Don't be afraid to take her honors course. Be sure to attend class.
Seemed incredibly biased! almost a feminist I would say because of some of the work we read. I mainly wrote essays depending on her opinion so i wouldn't get an F. Hard grader too!
I took the online class and to be honest she had some problems with the website and so did I but thats expected. As you have read she may come off biased, but as long as you write what you think she would like then you are ok, didn't much care for the online class though. hard grader
a very intelligent, fun, and dedicated teacher. she takes her classes seriously, so students should too. she can be easygoing, but dont take a negative advantage of it, do what you're expected to do, keep up with the class reading and assignments, and go to her for help if you need it.
she was a great professor! she was challenging, passionate, encouraging, and dedicated to her students and subject. doesn't let students scrape and easy A, which makes it all the more worthwhile when you get one. She is also quirky, funny, and interesting. i highly recommend taking her english classes!
One of the best teachers I've had. Not sure why some of you seem to think being a feminist is a negative characteristic; it's definitely not so with her. She's challenging there's no doubt; and expects people to be interested: not qualities which seem unreasonable to me. American Lit highly recommended.
Her online class was a joke..expected way too much for the level of instruction provided...wouldnt return papers to us until the day before the next one was due making it impossible to digest her critiques. Most of her critiques on papers were useless "you need more analysis"-- the sort of criticism you could apply to any statement anybody makes.
i loved her she was just fun and it felt like highschool it was fun, she did give a lot of work but by the end of this class im writing good essays, but her grading can seem random but over all a good teacher i would take her again if i could
This was one of the hardest classes that i have taken but one of the best! I thought the workload was insane but in the end i learned way more from her than any other prof. i have had. She is helpful, dedicated, and an amazing person (she actually is very human). Anyone who takes this class will learn a lot. BEST PROFESSOR who doesn't take any bs!
Very intelligent teacher, goes deep into analysis, making things clear and highly interesting. a good sense of humor and she tells good stories. very animated and gesticuates, but in a very good and entertaining way. one of the best english teachers i've ever had.

I took her Online English Course over the summer, pretty much hated the whole semester because of her class. Her assignments closed before they were suppose to, and that was just the first week. Had a problem each week(Professor Error). Wouldn't reccomend to anyone.
I'm starting an Intellectual Hotness rating: since this is an Online Class, and I never met her. But she's wicked smart and smart is hot! She a wide range of non-conservative lit to teach us, which was right up my alley. She's NOT an easy grader, which is a good thing.
Best teacher I've had this semester. Brilliant, funny, and constantly challenges us to improve our writing skills. I highly highly recommend her.
Wow, great professor. I took her class 5 years ago and I still consider her the best professor I've ever had. Take her class even if you don't need to!
I think she is skillful Prof, the class is fun, but I did not feel my writing was improved. Because it is not quite sure what should I improved and how can I do so. Analysis of reading would be improved, I think. In addition, I think she should improved handwriting, they are almost codes.
The worst teacher I have ever had. Gives no explanation to why she decided your papers grade. If you are thinking about taking her online class DON'T! She makes no attempt to interact with the class. Seems to have a huge ego. Did not learn a thing. I have never had a problem with a teacher but she was by far the worst. Horrible
Don't take the online class. She's difficult to understand, has many technological issues with getting information to the website and doesn't respond to emails.
I have never had that much time for English and Literature classes being a science major, but this teacher was incredible. Yes the work is hard and there is a fair amount, however, she is always willing to help. She is so understanding and if you have any questions or concerns she will go out of her way to help you. Best English teacher!
Very helpful and enthusiastic teacher, one of the best I've ever had. She pushes her students to do their best and is very flexible when it comes to helping students out with assignments. I highly recommend taking one of her classes!
This woman is amazing! I love her class and she is just the cutest thing ever, she is so helpful and she definitely pushes you to do your best. I am like the shyest person and I usually hate any teacher who picks on me and makes me talk but she is so rad that it doesnt bother me. seriously, she is amazing, so smart and believes in her students!
I would not take her online class, especially if you are a busy person with a full schedule. She has a problem with lateness (posting things late). She has difficulty with the website, which would not be an allowable excuse for a student. She does not do what she says she will do, does not post grades, and is notorious for being unclear.
Worst online instructor I have had. Does no teaching, just assigns readings & tests on them. You write 3 papers & she doesn't return comments on them in time for you to incorporate anything into the next one. Online quizzes are vague. Constantly late with postings & assignments & always has an excuse.
Great teacher, very engaging.
always have a excuse for herself on missing deadlines like quiz and test. using a very bad online class website. make students feel confuse on the homework and points.
Need to be a excellent writer to get an A in this class. Her critique on essays are confusing & come back late. She's very suspicious of plagiarism & hates when you ask questions. The format of the class is ridiculously confusing & she does not update the grade schedule. Nothing makes sense. Her quizzes are extremely hard. Students beware.
Do not take her class ONLINE! She is constantly late with grading assignments. This is especially frustrating when it comes to papers. Website we use has "technical difficulties". She makes excuses for herself and why things aren't posted on time. She comes off as rude right away, but this could just be because interactions are done online.
First impression of her wasn't good, but if are interested in improving your academic writing, there couldn't be a better teacher. Genuinely wants you to improve, knows how to explain it and teaches at a very high level. Difficult to get an A but this class drastically improves your writing ability. Highly recommended.
Do not take her online class. Seriously the WORST online teacher I have ever had. She never responds to questions, takes MONTHS to return papers and it simply not available to her online students. It is so frustrating. Hope this helps someone from making the mistake of choosing her for their online class.
She is hilarious, but a super hard grader. Rarely gives out A's. If you're an A student you'll probably get a B in her class. Honors has TONS of papers to write. If you want an A DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. To get an A you need to put serious thought into your writing that requires lots of TIME. And she hates it when you fall asleep in her class :)
Great class, except for the tests. They were incongruent with the rest of the course.
She is one of those teachers who wants you to figure out the text for yourself. If you are self-disciplined and like discussion based classes, take this class. If you need more organized and focused teaching, this class is terrible. The reading list is really great! She is readily available in office hours to help.
Don't take her online class! She is incredibly unclear in her prompts and unfortunately is not there to explain them at all. She's an incredibly hard grader, to the point of unfairness. You will spend countless hours on a paper working your BUTT OFF, meet all the requirements, and somehow manage to still get an F on the paper.
Like others have said before do not take her online course. She makes the whole process confusing and takes forever to respond to anything. Not a week went by smoothly and she never took the blame for any of the problems that occured. She doesn't offer any effective grading for her papers so you are basically on your own. I would not reccommend to anyone
I've taken all of her classes, wish there were more.
Took two classes from her this semester, and enjoyed them both very much. She doesn't stand for stupidity or lazing about, which is quite a refreshing change from other pathetic classrooms I have sat in at CC. Challenges you to think for yourself, express and engage. She gives great critiques, honest and insightful.
Do not take her online class. Her prompts are extremely unclear. You will spend a countless amount of time and effort on a paper, yet receive a bad grade due to her lack of clarity. She is a very hard grader. Not a friendly teacher. Worst online class I have ever taken.. by far!
Very difficult class. I spent at least 2 weeks writing each essay and talked to her about them every day that she had office hours until i made all the corrections that she suggested. I recieved a C on all of them. You learn a lot but shes is so hard on grading it doesnt even make sense.
I ended up dropping her class with a "W" because it was such a horrible format. I have always done well writing essays, and understood them. I am an english major. Her essay prompts were by far the most vague and confusing I or any of my previous teachers have seen. DO NOT take her online class!!!
Hard grader, need to go to office hours to pass. But worth taking. Very smart person, just do the work.
She really tailors content to the individual class, so it can be super interesting. It's a tough class. Ask lots of questions and ALWAYS START PAPERS ASAP! Go to her office hours--she's really helpful and really cares.
She is very unwilling to help students personally. She wants to mainly communicate via discussion boards and announcements. I had specific questions that were not answered on the announcements or boards and she wrote to me so condescendingly it was insulting. I will NEVER take a class from here again.
By far the worst english teacher I have ever had. Her online website is super confusing and she does not seem to care. Her prompts for essays are so outrageous and vague. When you ask for help she simply refers you to her confusing syllabus. So if your looking to pass Eng. 111 do not take her online class.
I will be honest, I was hesitant to take her online class after reading her comments on this site. Because she is the only online professor I decided to take it anyway. Yes her prompts were vague and difficult, but not impossible. Only an idiot would find a website like mylitlab to be confusing.
She's the best at SBCC. Just the work and go to office hours. She tries not to lower the quality of her teaching because she isn't at a four year. You know you've earned your grade.
Best teacher at SBCC. The difficulty of her class is rivalled only by her accessibility outside of the class room, and her willingness to help her students succeed.
As almost every1 else has said, her online class is a joke. She NEVER returns papers on time leaving you to write your next paper with no direction. Her comments on your papers are extremely vague, things like "hmmm" and "careful". She is extremely unclear with her assignment descriptions and provides no legitimate help. Does not have it together!
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE CLASS. she might've been a better teacher if it were not online, but online was the biggest joke ever. DON'T DO IT. reading her prompts, i found myself asking myself "are you kidding me?" She seriously could not make them anymore vague and confusing. SHE IS AN EXTREMELY HARD GRADER on top of all that, too. save yourself!
Eckford-Prossor is a very smart person, but is extremely confusing and vague as a teacher. Topics are difficult, but go to her office hrs, she is very willing to help. If she ever gives extra credit, DO ALL OF IT! It could save your grade. Would not recommend this prof if you want to write essays the night before. Hardest class I've taken at CC.
Great professor! Very difficult grader when it comes to papers, she sets a very high bar. Other than that, she chooses interesting books and takes care in knowing each and every student's name.
Very difficult class but I can honestly say that I'm a much better writer for having taken it. I was really afraid of this class afetr readin all the reviews but finally decided to try it out. Yes, she is a very strict grader, especially on papers but that is the whole point of a college level writing course. I did get an A but just barely.
Don't take her class. her instructions are moe confusing than you can ever imagine
Dr. Eckford-Prossor is the kind of professor that will change your life. I was lucky enough to have 110H and Amer. Lit with her, and it completely changed my career as a student. Take any class with her you can! She is brilliant, engages the class in thoughtful discussion, and cares personally about each student.
Dr. Eckford Prossor is one of the most amazing professors at SBCC, hands down. She truly cares about each and every one of her students and her classes are never boring Highly recommend new students to take her ENG 110H class, it will change your life!
This class is fairly simple: forums every week; one book to read; a couple of short stories and three papers. The tricky part is the STYLE of writing, which she strongly emphasizes. She also uses her phone to record videos and make an attempt to explain stuff. It's considerate but not too professional. Not a bad class. I honestly learned from it.
MEP is a really kind person. It is apparent that she cares about each of her students, and she is very approachable and helpful. I rarely attended class or spent time on essays, but the other students really liked her and improved their writing skills substantially. Take this class if possible. MEP is a great teacher, and a very cool lady.
She is kind and helpful. Her class pushed my intellectual limits and was incredibly helpful for my transfer to UC Berkeley and admittance into UCLA. She runs the Honors Program like a pro! Have as much interaction with her as possible! She is so cool!
She changed my life.
I love her. She's incredibly smart, funny, and sweet. I recommend taking her class, but keep in mind it is an honors class and she WILL push you. It's a good push though! Tough grader at the beginning of the semester, but she will transform you no doubt.
Melanie is an awesome person. However, being in her class right out of high school was a slap in the face. Everything learned in English the 4 years of high school is basically useless and wrong. She's super spunky and hilarious, just be prepared to put effort into your papers and visit her during office hours because they are beneficial to do well
When I first started the semester with MEP, I admired her intelligence and wisdom. Sadly, I realized quickly that she can be rather cocky and sarcastic. Her prompts were incredibly broad and confusing. Luckily, she extends almost every paper by a few days. I ended up getting a B and worked pretty hard for it. Attend class and participate.
MEP is a very tough grader, when taken into consideration the fact that her assignments are rarely clear this professor can make your life hard. Having said that, this was the class in which I learned the most this semester. She will help you above and beyond, and she utilizes her vast knowledge to make class interesting and entertaining.
Not a teacher for normal students That is why she is teaching honors (President of honors program). Eng 101H she is teaching is totally on an whole new academic level. Do not take this class if you only want to slack it will never happen
Dr. Prossor will actually tell you what is wrong with your papers and help you fix them. You have the opportunity to redo papers if they are bad (which they will be). This class WILL increase your writing level and the prompts are extremely abstract. I hated writing the papers, but looking back I would re-take it in a heartbeat. Really sweet lady.
There are only about 6 papers to do in her class and only 3 of them are relatively long (6-8 pages). She gives you the chance to redo everything and really wants you to succeed. Her class will prepare you for when you transfer! She's the nicest professor I've ever had go to her office hours when she assigns a paper and she will lay it all out for u
Don't come to class just reading the content. Do your best to understand and analyze it to your best of your ability. Highly encourages you to contribute and be involved in class. Loves to make class entertaining. You will never have a dull time. Content for the most part is not too challenging. Be over-prepared for tests.
Listen, shes a very nice lady and actually cares about you. She likes it if you actually email her because it shows youre trying. Actually show up, if you dont she will take note and wont be afraid to call your a(ss )out. She can spot a bulls(hitter) for sure. Her grading is very very very tough, dont be lazy and actually redo your papers.
This class was definitely a challenge writing wise. We wrote so many essays. I did bad on one paper but she lets you redo/ edit it if you talk to her during office hours. If you want to suffer and become better at analyzing text, take this class.
She cares a lot about the students participation. She makes sure that your voice is heard but it gets a little bit inconvenient at times. She gives students the chance to rewrite the essays if the grade is low. She is always available to talk outside class. The prompts are very vague
MEP is my favorite professor, she's very inspirational and truly cares about each of her students. Her papers can be tough, but she lets you rewrite them. Go into her office hours, she's extremely helpful and loves seeing students. You won't be able to skip or slack off without her noticing and calling you out either.
She's nice. She gives good feedback. She picks good reading material. But I honestly dread going to her class. It's interesting and not really for anyone who wants to sit back and just listen. She goes really in depth about the stuff she teaches. She's a very awesome professor, I just wasn't ready for this.
I highly recommend not taking this class. The paper topics are insanely complicated and she does a terrible job at explaining the directions. On top of that she's a really tough grader. She lectures the whole time about things that are irrelevant to the papers and just confuse you. If I could give her a score of lower than a 1 I would.
Eckford-Prossor is the best English professor I had. She's truly an English major's dream teacher. She loves her work and is very lively in class. She also takes the time to really get to know her students, and is especially patient, going over any material three or four times if requested. There are few assignments, so each one matters a lot!
Professor Eckford-Prossor is intimidating, but offers compensation with the sorts of interpersonal gestures that students need in order to feel approval (or at least in order to feel safe taking intellectual risks in front of her) my only regret in taking her class would be to not have risked enough.
OK, I love English. And I hated this class. The books we read were absolutely drab, and Melanie was so broad and rambling that focusing in a discussion was impossible. She graded papers harshly but also provided absolutely zero direction. We read one book. ONE.
Melanie proved to be the toughest class I've taken at SBCC. This course is any honor students mount 'Everest': to climb it can be seen as suicidal but if you make it, you'll be a better writer. My writing has improved more in one semester of MEP's than in 22 years of life - not a statement I say lightly. Embrace her class. It's the best class ever
books we read were interesting but I hated going to class.
MEP is an incredible professor. Yes her class is hard, but it's worth it. My writing improved dramatically and it's all thanks to Melanie for pushing her students to do more. Utilize her office hours!! If you are ever confused about paper topics or which direction to take your paper, TALK TO HER! She gives great feedback.
MEP is great. So passionate about literature and really makes an effort to get to know her students. She wants her students to succeed and helped us out whenever we became stuck. Long lectures that would extend the whole class period, which made us fall behind in the reading but she adjusted the syllabus. Very accommodating and passionate. LOVE!
Professor Eckford-Prossor's class is a difficult one. She really pushes her students, but offers a lot of support. I genuinely really enjoyed her class and was sad when it was over. My writing has improved dramatically over this semester. I definitely recommend this class if you are looking to improve your writing and have fun while doing so.
I really liked her and she made the English class fun. Very caring professor but the only problem was that she did not grade everything until the end of the semester so you did not know if you were failing or not. At the end of the semester she did not finish grading my work and I have failed.
This class is tough! Don't go in unless you are willing to put in the work required to get the grade you want. Although the readings are hard and her paper topics can be super abstract, Melanie's class preps you for writing at the university level. Be sure to do all the extra credit assignments, go to her office for constructive feedback.
She was a good professor and gave good feedback. She doesn't post grades until the end. But at the end of the semester she did not grade everything after I emailed her a few times so I did not pass. I was getting good grades to. Be ready to read a lot and write a lot.
Such a wonderful teacher, you will learn a lot from her and her class.
For Eng 222 make sure you read the textbook. Study authors, titles of works, and know the works inside out. She doesn't give enough info on big tests before hand. Got a 92% on the Midterm. I studied for hours and needed every second. Spring 2020 semester, moved online 1/2 way through-Not sure I would have an "A" if it weren't for that Attend class!
This professor is terrible STAY AWAY her class has no structure whatsoever its infuriating. She gives the weirdest assignments/ papers with even stranger and extremely confusing prompts, that are often not straightforward, extremely confusing, left VERY open to interpretation, followed by extremely haphazard and illogical grading. Never responds
I don't mind doing the work in my classes but it just makes it that much harder when everything is DISORGANIZED. The essay prompts are CONFUSING and it is so hard to navigate her canvas page. I took this class because I wanted to challenge myself but when your Professor doesn't make things clear its hard to succeed.
MEP definitely makes you work for a good grade in her class, but it's only because she wants to see you do better. She helped improve my writing so much this semester, and the reason why her prompts are typically more abstract is that she wants you to write about what YOU are passionate about. Reach out to her if ur confused and get ready to write!
This is the most enjoyable class I have ever had. If you are in college to try to get out of as much work as possible, don't take her class. If you want to improve immensely as a writer and have brilliant discussions, take her class. MEP really allows you the opportunity to grow as a writer/ student that other professors and classes just don't.
Professor Eckford is a great professor! English is not my first language but because of her easy grading and great feedback, I found this class to be really doable. Big part of your grade comes from revisions of the 4 essays you have to write. She really is an easy grader and she rounds up your final grade at the end of the class.
Her class made me want to transfer from this college. Note: I love English and received 5's on AP Lang/Lit. My grade in her class reflects her vague writing prompts, late grading, and over-critiquing commentary. She marks off points for things that weren't in the instructions. &Most of the time, she doesn't tell you what you were marked down for
MEP is truly an inspiring professor and makes you understand the concept of critical thinking. She makes you work for the grade you desire and helps to push boundaries through her feedback. This professor is a pretty tough grader, but it is all in the spirit of making you the best writer/scholar you can possibly be.
Essay prompts were REALLY vague and confusing. No rubrics for papers and minimal feedback so you wouldn't really know what the issue was. However, you could earn points back on your papers through revision. Frustrating class but did help me improve a LOT as a writer. If you want an easy A, don't take, but if you want to improve at writing then do!
This is the head of the honor's program, expect some rigor. She holds students to a high standard, especially in writing and analyzing, but she is willing to put in time with you to help you get there. She also is good at making the lesson plan thought provoking. Keep your papers concise and tight, she doesn't like any fluff.
Honestly horrible. I wouldn’t say I’m the best at English but I’ve managed to pass up until this point. SO unorganized, extremely confusing and vague prompts and assignments. Doesn’t offer help if you “do an assignment wrong”. Doesn’t grade until the very end so you don’t know if you fail or pass. Awful
Very nice person but very difficult class. I can't emphasize enough that she expects a lot. She knows this, but it's not that she doesn't care, it's that she has very high standards. Definitely not a class to take for fun or if you have other classes.
Very cool person, but the class was hard. Attendance is not taken, but missing class puts you behind. Lectures are helpful for when you are writing papers. There is lots of material to read in this class but it is interesting. I only recommend this class if you are an English major or someone who enjoys reading and analysis of tough poetry.
The class is set up well, she is an amazing professor and very critical of your work. Very passionate and inspiring, she makes you work hard, but in the end, you will come out a better writer. Go to class every day, and meet with her for office hours. You will be prepared for any college-level writing wherever you transfer to. Was not an easy A.
An okay professor. She took this class a little too seriously and was not clear on essay rubrics at all. I was very stressed out and had a B all semester until the very last day. She doesn't grade fast either so your grade will be unclear until the end of semester. ALWAYS DO THE CREATIVE OPTION!
Class was hard but she is a very nice person and very easy to work with if you take time to talk to her outside of class and develop a relationship.
I absolutely loved my ENG 222 class with MEP! She taught english in a way that spoke to me significantly and I enjoyed all of the material we covered. She gave us help when we needed it but also knew when to push us and overall it was a great class and I highly reccommend.
I loved this class she is very nice & explained the materials very well. Only thing I would complain about is that we had less than 10 assignments that were all high-point value. I wish that there were a few smaller assignments so that our grades didn't dependent so much on these big assignments. But she is amazing & I recommend anyone to take her!
