By far the best professor I've had at Pitt thus far. Very organized and prepared. Pretty sure these reviewers are thinking of someone else. Just remember that deceleration isn't a thing and you'll be fine!

I averaged a 77 in all three exams but still getting an A (this wouldn't be possible if I was taking other sections). At the end of the day your grade is the only thing that matters, so if you can show up lectures Dr. Good is definitely the person you wanna take.

She's fine more organized now and really cares about her students.

People only rate her poorly because they sit through the class playing on their phones or doing work for other courses. The exams aren't difficult if you actually do the homework (take less than an hour, if you really take your time). Clicker questions are easy. Good lectures; tries to make it interesting.

I was scared to take class with her because of the reviews. I think she's better for phys 2 than she is for 1 based on what others have said. She generally knows what she's talking about, but it's hard to use the textbook since it doesn't correlate with lectures. Tests were okay although some weird questions so I just wrote down everything I knew.

Dr. Good is incredibly considerate and it's clear she's made every effort to keep class engaging and help students out while online due to COVID. Only complaint is the incredibly short stressful quizzes for a midterm grade and the lack of consistency with HW dates. Super nice but the adjustment this semester has been pretty tough for grades.

I'm so glad I took Dr. Good for physics! Her quizzes are tricky, but if you prepare for them you'll do fine. She's very kind and understanding towards her students. If you're ever confused about a topic she also takes the time to really explain it!

Professor Good is a solid choice for Physics. She explains concepts well in lecture and the tests emulate her lectures so there are few surprises. We had weekly quizzes instead of exams which made the content much more manageable. A good choice for physics.

I was so scared bc I had never taken physics before although I have a strong math background but dr good was pretty good. Physics is just a difficult subject for most people but she was very accessible and kind. if you catch her mistakes you can get bonus points! The physics content on the MCAT was wayyy easier that this, so I felt very prepared

Dr. Good was a solid physics professor. This was my first physics class in 8 years so I was a bit nervous about the class but I passed. Make sure you keep up with the lectures and do a lot of practice problems. She is a fair grader and gives out a good amount of partial credit on exams. If you go to every lecture and do every assignment youll pass

Two years ago, I took physics 1 with a different prof and failed. I was nervous coming in as a non-stem major, but Dr. Good's class/youtube lecture structure made it possible for me to not only pass but actually learn physics. While difficult, I enjoyed the class and really respect her as a professor. Lectures are well explained & clear, v useful!

Great lady, super sweet. Class is definitely hard but thats like most classes here at pitt. Its challenging but you can do it if you actually put the work in!! Please take her, shes so sweet and will help you if you need it!!!

Good prof. If you suck as physics you will struggle. Tests are hard but reflect what you learn. 3 midterms one final. Final was cumulative and kind of hard but not horrible. Tests are worth alot of your grade. Achieve homework every week but not hard. Study for the tests and you will certainly pass, weekly recitation quiz as well, which are harder.

Professor Good is a solid physics professor. I am far from a physics person but I learned a lot from her class. I enjoyed the flipped classroom format because we were able to watch the lectures that covered the theory on our own time and she spent class time doing examples. Her exams aren't too bad as she gives out a lot of partial credit.

Melanie is a solid choice for physics 1. I do not have much background in physics at all but I was able to do well. She uses a flipped classroom so you have to watch prerecorded videos before lecture and lecture is spent going over examples. Just keep up with the lecture videos and do plenty of practice problems and you'll be fine

I see a lot of negative reviews on here and I understand them. However I felt like Dr. Good was actually incredibly kind and caring. Her class is far easier when you go to her office hours, when she clarifies everything and helps you with difficult concepts. I found her lectures to be interesting you just have to show up and ask questions

She is very passionate about the topic of intro to spaceflight, and honestly, you could really learn a lot from it. Even if you decide to blow the class off the grading in the class is extremely generous. The tests are a bit challenging however.

I see a lot of bad reviews, and I can see why; in reality, Dr Good is an extremely caring and good-natured person who wants you to succeed, provided you put in the effort. she once had to cancel office hours and instead offered to meet me 30 mins before class to discuss a problem I had on homework. much better if u have a physics background.

I took Professor Good for E&M. First year physics is pretty difficult, but if you put in the work, you can do very well. She gives out extra credit opportunities, and although the average of the final was pretty low, she curved it a lot if you did extra credit. Watch the videos before lecture to understand what's going on and do all surveys!

Dr. Good is like most teachers you will have: follows the course schedule based on textbook/online presentation. However, she is very caring and understanding when asking for help.

For the previous reviews stating that she did not teach physics and played instruments for a lecture; it was the final lecture of the semester so of course it would be more laid back. She used the instruments to help demonstrate waves and frequency which was what was being taught. It helped me understand more efficiently. I liked Prof Good a lot.

Dr Good is extremely knowledgeable in her subject. She's also extremely helpful and lenient if you ask questions and talk to her. I would definitely recommend her to students. My only thing was that the homework was harder than the problems in class and the tests, however, if you know how to do the homework, you'll ace the tests.

Dr. Good was a pretty run of the mill physics professor but she is definitely over hated. Her midterms were usually three questions around three parts each which she gives a lot of partial credit for. My only critique is that the final is completely multiple choice and most of my peers scored significantly lower on the final than on their midterms.

With zero physics knowledge, I was somewhat scared going into this class. However, watching Organic Chemistry Tutor helped me succeed. Dr. Good is a nice person, but physics itself is a difficult course to teach. I had an A+ going into the final but bombed it (avg. 56), so I would focus on studying that. Requires 10+ hours of studying a week.

All the engineering majors on here are just mad they bombed their final and put them off track for the little course schedule they're meant to follow. I really enjoyed Melanie's class, and felt that her method of teaching material made it accessible to anyone with any level of physics background. She is a great person and her interest is inspiring.

The midterm exams are doable. She gives many chances to boost your grade. The problem is the departmental final which is worth 20% of your final grade and has an average of 50%. Every section takes this final so you may as well take physics with Dr. Good to boost your overall grade with her easier midterms than with another professor.

Midterms are tough but manageable if you study and attend office hours. She offers resources to help with studying for midterms but doesn't hand out easy grades. The departmental final is challenging but standard for all physics classes, so it's not her fault. She's very understanding, and if you do the work you'll do well. Take her over Dr. Nero!

Dr. Good is very nice. She's happy to help and answer your questions. The midterms were hard and more concept-based, and the final was extremely difficult but that's the department's fault. She gives in-class "quizzes" that count as attendance, but you can find it on Canvas so you know when you have to go. There are some extra credit opportunities.

She was a pretty good professor. People here are lowkey just hating cuz they are bad at physics.

While I do not want to invalidate the other reviews on Good, I have not experienced the bad I hear from others. I had her for phys 1 and 2; she is helpful during office hours. I do not like the flipped class model, but that might be out of her control. Attendance is *sometimes* mandatory. Go to her office hours and you'll be fine.

dr. good is an amazing professor. she offers two grading schemes (average ur two midterm scores (given u get at least 20% on final) or have a regular grading scheme w hw and participation and the final.) she also curves. if you go to her office hours she is very approachable and helpful. the final sucks but its departmental so that wont change.

She's a really nice person, but not the best lecturer. Would've probably gotten a higher grade if I tried harder tbh

I had a pretty rough semester but was still able to get an A- in this class while honestly allotting a very small amount of time for it. she curves and had a really helpful and clear grading scheme. exams were fair, but the departmental final is very difficult.

Dr. Good is very approachable and really cares about her students. She's always willing to help if you ask. Haven't finished the class yet but would definitely recommend; not that many professors take the time to help you like she does

She does in class problems and demonstrations, which really help with understanding. The homework is pretty hard, but there's a link to the materials that explains the concepts. The tests are pretty stressful at times, along with multiple extra credits opportunities for the final. She also has 2 grading schemes, normal and test averages.

The lectures were clear and concise with demonstrations. She had multiple extra credit opportunities for the final, through surveys and mock lectures, and was available after class for questions. The pre lecture videos were confusing, with me not knowing what's important or not. The homework was hard but had links to the relevant textbook pages.

I only had her for a few weeks, I had to drop the semester for health reasons. When I initially contacted her about the health concerns, she gave me the option to have optional attendance on days I couldn't make it. When I had to drop because my health got worse I really felt like she cared. She also does flipped lectures, but the videos are short.

Dr. Good is a very nice professor that cares about her students and is always willing to help you in any problem. She makes class fun and engaging, especially for a hectic first semester of college. I liked her better than Dr. Nero in my opinion. I got a 100 on every midterm and had a 98 going into the final but got a 66 which ended me with an A-

She's definitely over hated; she's a good professor and wants you to do well. Very easy participation and bonus points though you do have to go to class, but I think any physics class you need to go to class to do well. Exams averages are usually in the 70s so not much of a curve.

Her lectures can be disorganized, but she grew on me throughout the semester. Tests and recitation quizzes were fair; homework was much harder. My TA was pretty bad and often late to rec but that's not her fault. I never did physics in HS and honestly put little work into this class and still got a B, so I wouldn't worry if you have her!

I don't know why everyone gives her bad reviews. She taught very well and clearly cared about her students. Most of the problems in this class are because of physics and the department, not because of Dr. Good. Be aware, though, of group problems that occur most classes, and have to be solved in class to get points.

Without prior physics experience, this class is very hard. However, she is a very kind professor. Exams and homework questions were often more difficult than what was taught in class. Exam averages were around 70% per exam, and the final average was a 50%. Three-question exams with lots of opportunity for partial credit. Show up to class.

If you took physics in high school and are good at algebra, this class should be a breeze. Weekly recitation quizzes and participation questions in lecture. Exams were very fair. Grade is either based on the usual breakdown or the average of your midterms as long as you scored a 75% in recitation/lecture and a 20% on the final (whichever is higher)

Dr. Good was a great lecturer and taught all the quantitative ideas well. Lecture was usually half problem solving and half lectured material. TAs weren't great and recitation quizzes were more challenging than some of the midterm exam questions. Dr. Good really cares about her students and wants them to understand the concepts.

I came into this class with zero physics knowledge whatsoever but was able to preform well because Dr. Good sets up her class for success. Midterm exams are easier than assigned homework and recitation quizzes which was a lifesaver because you can take the average of them as your final grade. Was also one of the kindest profs I've ever had.

Very approachable, good prof. Flipped lectures. 3 exams preceded final. Participation based on 2 question weekly quizzes, in class, in groups. Dr.Good stayed after class to answer questions, was available during office hours and via email. Partial credit was given liberally, and you could ask for a regrade. Did do demonstrations as time permitted.

Like others have mentioned, if you took any physics in highschool, this class should be a breeze. You have more than enough time to complete her midterms which weren't difficult. She's enthusiastic about what she teaches. She has 2 grading systems which can save you if you do poorly on the final (saved me) the departmental final was hard (50% avg).
