best of all and very helpful. highly recommended
very nice person, tries to make the class as easy as possible.can be dis-organised in class sometimes otherwise highly recommend
bessssssssssssssssssst. great personality and willingness to help /. Great
if i hadnt taken chemistry with melanie i probably would have dropped it. best teacher ive ever had. would highly recommend
she is very cool. She gives handout that have all the material needed. she keeps the class interesting. I recommend her anytime.
She was a great professor and very helpful and intersted in students doing well.
Prof. Harvey is the best...took the class twice the first time was a nightmare. Whith prof. Harvey was like a dream.Thank you for all the help and support.
Melanie is a great teacher. I didn't use my book once the whole semester because she basically has written one for the course. I am premed and her class gave me a solid foundation to move on to Gen Chem. She is a bit disorganized, late a lot, and easily distracted but she knows her stuff and is super helpful. I wish I had her for Gen Chem right now
her class was difficult, but her study guides are super helpful. you def don't want to get behind! she explains ideas well, but i have to say she seems a little condescending at times. all in all, i would take her again because of the way the class is set up.
I'm not sure why people say she isn't nice. She's extremely helpful if you need anything. Yes the class is hard but its chemistry, its not an easy class. I have no issues with her and would reccoment her 100%!
If you go to class and get involved, Harvey will help you out. You never you the text book except at home study so going to class is crucial for note taking. Overall a very cool and solid teacher. If I needed another chem class I would look for her first.
She is a great great great teacher. Never use the textbook in the class, she will give you the note that is helpful for review everything.Have 6 exams and 1 final, if you attend every class take a good note you will got a good great.
I hated science before this class; afterward, I considered changing my major to chemistry! She's very organized, easy to understand, a fair grader. If you do the work, you will be completely prepared to ace the test. If you can believe it, I found myself looking forward to this class everyday!
Always late, ALWAYS! Can be very condescending and sometimes ignores you when you ask a question. Come to every class and keep up with homework or you will be lost. Worked very hard for my grade, which she tells you! Quiz once a week, 6 exams and one comprehensive final.
Dr. Harvey is a fabulous instructor. She is extremely organized, professional & approachable. I took this class in the Fall '09 semester. I was terrified, but Dr. Harvey explains the material so well that learning is easy & fun. Of course, you have to put in the effort needed- chemistry is not an easy subject. Take her, she's fantastic.
Ms. Harvey is an excellent teacher, and is great at explaining any questions you might have. I had a wonderful time in her class, and I got a B....I have 2 kids and a very hectic life, so just put in the work, and you will do great. She is an AWESOME teacher!
Great Teacher Highly Recommended. She is a very happy person great to be around. You use Typed out notes and you fill in the blank in class as she lectures. She gives you practice on angel and pink book which is Great Help! My advice: Go to every class and stay on top of what you learned that day, do the practice & you will be fine!
She is an excellent teacher. Must attend class or you will be lost. She is willing to help as much as you need it. I would highly recommend taking this class.
Melanie is an amazing teacher. She has a very bubbly personality. Show up for class and study and you will be fine. She knows her stuff. She is and awesome teacher. Must take her!!
GREAT TEACHER. Took online hybrid...great online videos that make up for little class attendance. Very personable. If Chemistry is intimidating to you-take her. Very willing to work with you to help you get the best results for your effort.
My friend took the same class and said she was very good and helpful! I decided to give her a try and didn't really like her all that much. She is so not helpful at all and just blows you off whenever you ask a question. She also just reads the notes out loud and expects you to understand on your own.
Chemistry is a difficult class. If you keep up with the material you will be fine, but it is easy to get behind. She does not use the book, she gives you notes that you fill out in class. The tests are over the material on the notes, no surprises!
Chem is hard period the end. But Melanie has you fill in a pre made notebook. She does not explain. If you understand and do not need help or ask questions you r fine, if u do ask she does not help. Also if you go to her for office time help once there she tells u thats what tutors and SRC r for. Also talks to much about kids. Be prepared to work!!
Be prepared to learn on your own. This professor makes you fill in a notebook, she does not explain the concepts though. Also start to memorize your poly atomic ions from day one, she will tell you the night before you need to know them the next day, this is next to impossible. Find a professor that actually teaches you chemistry.
She does have a premade note packet she uses to teach with. I prefer this way over reading the book. Wish more teachers taught like her. Everything you need to know to pass the test is in the note packet. She tells you what to expect for test,no surprises. Chem is a hard class! If you keep up and do the practice work you will do fine.
AWESOME TEACHER! If you're taking Chemsitry, take her! Before taking her class, I hated Chemistry.. but right now currently, I have an A in her class. You do need to put forth work and keep up, but she is such a great instructor. Take her for Chemistry!!!!!!
Good luck if you have her next semester. Poor quality, does not teach well. Good luck if you ask a question on getting an answer. Make sure you attend everyday, you will need to work extra hard in here class. She does not drop lowest exam like most do.
She's good. Hard, but good. Her notes are awesome. She's clear about what she wants on the test. Do not cram for this class! I tried it and got a C. Spend time on this class because the material jumps around a lot. I wish I had taken General now but that's not the teacher's fault. Do well by her and you'll get a grade you can be proud of.
She is very helpful and nice. Show up every class and do the work and you will pass. She can answer all your questions and is willing to meet with you if you are having a hard time understanding something. If you are taking chem she is the teacher you want.
Online class, but labs with her were good. exams were terrible though.
She is a very nice and helpful teacher who is willing to meet you after class and give you and extra resources you may need. She can occasionally be unclear or move at too fast of a pace, but she has all of her discussions online and even practice test. If you utilize all the resources she gives you and study, you will get an A.
Was not helpful, went and asked for help told I was not watching videos enough and pulled up my online log and tired to explain I was not doing my part. I watched you tube video to try to understand better cuz I didnt understand you. You never offered help or asked how I was doing after
She is a good teacher and very clear what she wants from you. However, your tests and final are the biggest part of your grade so if you do poorly theres pretty much nothing you can do. I ended the class with an 89% and she wouldn't bump me up to and 89.5% for an A.
Travels through class notes way to fast. She doesn't take time to explain the small details leading up to the result instead skips straight to the ending. She gets off topic about her personal stories way to often making it difficult to stay on task and fully understand material
Shoos u out of labs when a lot of time is left! Doesn't grade fast-don't get homework/tests/quizzes back for long time. Not approachable; bit on the condenscending side; sometimes late; tests r crazy hard..crazy ?'s/true-false; don't feel like she wants u to do good! Maybe a Chem Dept thing-need tests back 2 study-sorry if u have 2 redo ea semester
She takes 3+ wks to grade anything so if you need your exams to study GOOD LUCK! She doesn't respond to emails at all. She's rude, condescending, unapproachable & apathetic at best. Khan Academy's teaching me as she won't. The txtbk's very confusing. You'll teach yourself this course. Tests are a gauntlet be prepared to memorize a ton from day one.
She is a great teacher. Gives you all the information you could need to succeed. If you ever need help she is available during her office hours! Just do the work she assigned and and study you will get an A. She does talk through her notes pretty fast, but if you ask her to slow down she will!I would recommend her for anyone taking chemistry
If you are looking for an easy A with the material being spoon fed to you in a mind-numbing and sometimes condescending way, she is the teacher for you! If you are looking for a teacher who uses proper English, answers your questions thoroughly,or is, in any way, intellectually stimulating, you should keep looking.
So much work. Really hard to understand in her videos and seems to think that we should automatically get it since she does. Spent one day with another teacher as sub and learned more from them in that one day than had for the whole semester from her. Tests are ridiculously hard. memorize EVERYTHING.
Great teacher! I definitely recommend her. Her lectures are on posted online where you can see the powerpoint slide and hear her voice. Lab time is mandatory, but she makes the best out of them.
I took the online class and Professor Harvey definitely knows her stuff. You don't even need the book for her class. She is very helpful if you don't understand something. The videos she posts are great, and the expected work is straightforward. Expect to work hard for an A, but I highly recommend going with Harvey.
Professor Harvey is amazing! She has been able to teach chemistry in a way that is understood to those who don't get it as easy. She is also an outgoing and fun professor that is always willing to help when needed.
Every unit comes with a detailed packet that you fill out with notes while listening to lectures online. She gives a huge amount of practice that is just for you to learn the material and you can do on your own (this is extremely helpful). I truly believe I would not of succeeded in this class without Professor Harvey, she is an amazing teacher.
I did a hybrid course of an online weekly lecture and lab in person. The online part is well structured with the lecture up for streaming and download, solid walkthroughs, and optional practice material available. As for labs, Harvey is very personable and knowledgeable, explaining the labs beforehand and assisting as needed in and out of class.
She will do all she can to work with you and accommodate success. She provides lots of practice and information to help. If you practice and read the information, the class is a breeze. She is very personable and approachable.
She is personable and easy going. One of the most approachable professor about questions you have for the class, or to talk about other things. she is very friendly and the hybrid (half online half in class) is interesting and works only if you actually watch her videos, otherwise you will be lost the whole semester, as these are her lectures.
Professor Harvey is a good professor. She is knowledgeable, very helpful, and up-front about what she will be testing on. This particular section is 'flipped." You view her lectures as homework and work problems in class, with one lab every week. Being able to watch the lectures multiple times is very helpful. I would take another class with her.
Melanie Harvey is an amazing professor and super dedicated to her students. She does a flipped classroom, so all of her lectures are online and they're not long - the longest was 32 minutes but most are far less than that. She does do daily quizzes so you want to go to class, but it helps you keep up to date on lectures. TAKE HER CLASS!
I love thehybrid format of the class I took. Having one day of the lecture online while still having one day of class time to ask Prof. Harvey questions and practice the concepts in class was nice. I wish more classes were offerened in this format
I really enjoyed this class. Melanie Harvey teaches using a flipped classroom method. You go home and watch the lectures as videos for homework and then in class you can ask questions and practice the skills with the teacher there to help. She was fun and the way she explained things really made sense. I would highly recommend her !
Very engaged professor with a tremendous understanding of chemistry. She's fun, helpful and her flipped classroom style of teaching alleviates some of the hardships associated with the tough material. Loved her.
I took a hybrid version of this class and I really liked it only because I didn't have to go to school everyday. Her power points and online lectures were very helpful but the examples we did together were NOTHING like the homework or in the labs. This class was very frustrating for me and I had to work very hard. Overall it wasn't too bad.
Great teacher. I have never enjoyed the subject, but she changed this for me. Her hybrid course was awesome!! Do the pink book and you should pass the class!! Listen to her lectures and do the notes, go to class, and you will be fine! Expect to study, this is chemistry, it isn't a total breeze. But, I got A's on everything. She is the best!!
Would definitely take another one of her classes! Chemistry is my kryptonite but she was always available for help. Loved the flipped classroom. Wish there would have been some optional extra credit. DO THE PINK BOOK! She gives you plenty of practice, USE IT!
TAKE HARVEY'S CLASS. I had hybrid version. Textbook is optional. Her online lectures and handouts are clear and contain ALL the information you need. Lots of practice material available. No surprises on the tests. She is super helpful and approachable.
Professor Harvey is a nice person. One thing I don't like about her is she don't grade our exam right away. I had to wait more than 1 week before I get my exam result back. During lab, she just set at her desk playing with her cellphone while we are busy with our lab. She should be checking her students to see if we are doing right.
Took the online hybrid course, and it wasn't too bad. I definitely had to work for my grade though. She responds well to any questions you have through out the week via email. She's accessible in person as well. Show up for lab, and study for exams, and ASK QUESTIONS if you have them. You should be alright.
Professor Harvey was nice and funny but she was mediocre at best. She does reverse classroom style teaching which translates to you teach yourself and you come to class and are handed a quiz before she actually goes over anything with you. She did not teach but gave you worksheets while she played on her phone and then did the problems herself.
I like the "flipped classroom" however, having 'some' assigned homework other than the video lecture may help the material sink in better.
I loved the hybrid version of the class she really helped me understand chemistry which is my worst subject. She was always helpful and quick at responding to questions about grades. She did a fantastic job helping one on one with what you were struggling with. I would recommend this course to anyone who needs to take chemistry 122.
I love having the lecture videos online. I wish more classes were like this. I felt more time was given to answer questions I didn't understand in the lecture video. The course structure helped immensely with learning Chemistry.
I took Chem 140 (Intro to Organic Chem) online. We had lab once a week (usually lasted 2-2.5 hours). Her online lectures were great. She simplified the material, and the flow made sense. She was very accessible by text, email, and in person. She's also flexible and understands that we are working adults with lives! Definitely recommend!
Melanie is an excellent professor! Her online class for Chem 140 was very straight forward. Her lectures are clear and really do a good job in simplifying the material. We met once a week for lab, usually lasted 2-2.5 hours. She is flexible and understands we are all working adults with lives! Would definitely recommend this to a friend.
Open book quizzes, available when needed, examples for chapter work is shown through D2L with correct answers. She is an amazing teacher and makes it easy for you to learn.
Worth taking
Professor Harvey was a really good teacher. She uses a flipped classroom technique and it really helps. You're only homework is watching the assigned video and filling in the note packet. During class, she goes over everything in the video and is really helpful if you don't understand. As long as you show up you will pass.
Love this teacher; she is amazing and helped me feel confident in this course.
This class is tough, but Harvey gives you everything you need to do it!
This class has videos you watch and online quizzes and meets only for lab. Tests are in the testing center. She gives you note packets that you can fill out.
Quizzes almost every day in class but as long as you watch the lecture videos before coming they are easy and can use notes.
Took the hybrid course, the videos she posted each week were great and really allowed me to learn from them. The quizzes online are super easy if you pay attention to the videos. Gives a lot of opportunities to improve grade.
She is a great person, and a great professor! She always gives us what we need to be successful, and goes above and beyond to be helpful. This is a tough class, with tough material BUT as long as you come to class and participate you will be successful. She encourages us to work together, and the lectures are extremely engaging. Well worth it!
Don't mess around. She knows her stuff, is very approachable, not just a scientist, and gives very good advice on how to excel in the class. I really enjoyed her class. She even helped with other science courses where the professors we're truly mediocre. You'll learn from her if you apply. Only 1 student dropped this course. Pretty good!
Best professor ever. Just show up, watch the lectures and you can get an A as long as you put in the time. She does a flipped class so you watch 10-30 min videos at home and do homework/worksheets in class so she can help and give answers. She gives you every opportunity to pass and learn the material. I wish I could take her for Gen. Chem!
Mrs Harvey is very approachable. She helped me tremendously receive the grade I needed to get into the program I was applying for. She does not want you to fail. The material is hard, but if you study and watch her videos online, you will do fine.
I loved being in Professor Harvey's class. She is very honest with the class on how they're doing and tells you exactly what you need to know. Do your pink books, take really good notes and look over the terms on every note packet, because you might pass the applying part on the test but if you don't know the terms you'll fail easily. Flashcards!!
Absolutely loved her class. Took chem online. She provided notes that she went over, and let us use notes on the tests. The material was easy to understand and she went over the notes from different perspectives so that everyone would understand. Just do the notes and homework and youll pass the class.
Professor Harvey was hands down one of the sweetest professors and was very encouraging. She was always on top of emails and replied in a quick manner. This was my 2nd time taking chem, and I learned so much from her in a way that was easy to understand. Do the note packets, they will help on tests!!
I had to get on here and warn people not to take her class. She is actually the worst professor I've had. I took principles of chemistry with her and we were basically doing organic chemistry the entire time. I regret taking her class, because I know I could have gotten a higher grade if I would have chose a different teacher. Don't take her class!
There is a great deal of material in each unit. Well presented, but a lot of information! It is very obvious she cares for her students and is willing to help students so we understand the material. She added a weekly Q&A time for zoom meeting to discuss any questions, review material or go over problems together. This was very helpful!!
WORST CHEMISTRY TEACHER EVER! I was confused the entire semester. Her explanations didnt help me or my friend. Take class with someone else.
Tests are so heavily weighted there is no room for error. No extra credit. For a beginning level Chem course, this was stressful. Content or labs weren't too extra- you just had to ace everything every time to make the grade. Very little communication. Would email asking 3 questions and get a reply back with 1 answer. Lecture videos were helpful!
Will never email you back if you have any questions!! Not interested in meeting with you or helping you
Took this class virtual and it couldn't have been easier. Miss Harvey's lectures aren't long at all - they're literally straight to the point. She also fills in the note packet during her lecture videos so as long as you follow along, you'll be golden. All of her exams and quizzes are open note. Very responsive to any questions aswell. 10/10!
chem is scary. she honestly helped me pass. the tests are 55% of your grade and proctored, but open note! as long as you have good notes youll pass. office hours help out. she rounded my grade up. she gave extra credit assignments on the last month. i took 5 courses so im surprised i passed.
I thought for taking such a difficult class online I couldn't have had a better professor. She emails back fast, the work is very well explained, she cares so much about her students, and over all my experience was great. No extra credit and the tests are heavily graded but if you do the assignments, and put in the work, youll pass very easily.
Take the class
The class in general for me was difficult, but she is a great professor and takes the time to help you understand. She is awesome and enjoyed having her as a professor for my first year.
Phenomenal professor- easily one of my favorites! No homework, great lectures paired w/ notes, would zoom to do an exam walk through post-exam if needed. Don't be intimidated by at home labs. Made me realize that I love Chem. A great class- easy to follow. She is kind, understanding, flexible, & really goes above & beyond to ensure understanding!
Dr. Harvey thinks very highly of herself. She constantly talks about herself instead of course material. Doesn't respond to emails. And you are forced to do research. Find another instructor.
Like. Meh. Like. Like. Like.
