Very nice and very smart, but totally clueless about students cheating on her weekly reading quizes. Midterm was easy, you just had to attend a Shakespeare play.
She was so sweet :) She was a little technology-challenged, but really down to earth. She has published 2 books and is working on a third, I would have liked to take her writing class. The class was straightforward and she kept it interesting by mixing up the activities. You go to a Shakespeare play for the midterm.
Super nice and quizzes are easy.
Sweetest lady ever!!!! There is a lot of reading but the quizzes are easy and usually come form sparknotes. Go to class and read the books and its an easy A.
She is the SWEETEST prof! :) A great prof for World Lit. It's not your typical, boring readings. Easy quizzes to make sure you read the books. 10 books or so, can be a large amount of reading. Would HIGHLY recommend her! TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! (Fun videos in class too.)
Professor Sumner is awesome, friendly and easy to communicate with. She is very helpful and requires you to be in class. There is a lot of reading, but the books she chose were very interesting. She gives extra credit.Easy A or B if you attend class, read the books and participate in class discussions. Quizzes & tests were not hard if you read.
Professor Sumner is a fantastic teacher! I am not your typical reader so when I saw the load of 10 + books I was a little worried, however her book choices were great reading! 1 quiz for every book along with a presentation, MT, and a final. Must go to class, see movies about the books your reading! I LOVED THIS CLASS!
allowed 1 absence. quizzes easy but 1 400 page book a week is alot to read when working or taking full load. doesn't read books before assigns them. class time is joke just class presentations. do NOT take unless you want to be bored once a week. wish i took with someone else.
Loads of pointless tedious work. In the end its not worth it considering the final paper is graded based on her own skewed sense of grammar. She can't even make a proper works cited as she had to go to noodletools to figure it out. She discriminates against ideas she doesnt like. Its supposed to be a fun fiction writing class. It's not! DO NOT TAKE
Great teacher! I loved doing the workshop in class with everyone's story. She gave one free absence. Learned a lot about the basics and fundamentals of writing.
Ok for teaching. Not prepared for class and "lecture" was not fluid. Work load is not overwhelming and grading is fair. Not open to admitting mistakes or altering work. Did learn in class, have to do reading. Quizzes are important but did not feel prepared. Doesn't prepare you for assignments with information until after it is due. Not great class.
I took this class online. She is SO helpful and an extremely lenient grader. I would highly recommend this class. I had to read a novel a week and it was relatively easy. Take her!
I took the online class, my first one. There is a lot of reading for this class. You will do well if you keep up with the reading and do the required posts online.
I loved this class! We covered so many interesting topics & read so many thought provoking books! The most writing in this class was the 500 word final. grades easy, just follow the guidelines. Requires play attendance at Shakespeare's tavern. has blog posts or discussion posts weekly. I definitely recommend taking her! Very involved in the class!
Great Professor! Recommend on-line class to anyone. It requires plenty of reading but that's the most I can say against the class. Do the reading, answer the post and you will pass. I received an A.
I really don't like English, but this class was completely bearable, mostly because I took it online. ANyways, easy class. I all work is turned in via D2L in a 500 word essay form. If you sound intelligent in your submitions and put in a bit of effort you'll make an A.
Great class! A lot of reading. 5 books total, but not bad. Assignments include attending Taming of the Shrew @ the Shakespeare Tavern, pilot test, intro post, 5 discussions, and a multiple choice final. Literature is my worst subject and I made a 97 out of 100. Take her! It doesn't get much easier than this...and you'll actually enjoy the books.
Great Professor! She wants all to do well. Plenty of reading. Read the books and answer the discussions and you will do fine. Easy A ( I agree with the person below) Can't get no better than this.
As long as you do the work you will have no problem getting an A in this class. We had 4 books to read with a short quiz at the end. Each book also had a book club discussion and then there were two "big discussion" questions that had to also be answered. Overall an easy class if you put forth some effort.
This is THE option for an online World Lit class. Your grade consists of online discussions on 5 reading assignments, 5 quizes, short essay of 500-600 words and a final test. As long as you are familiar with the reading material, you can make an easy A.
So many books to read. Do not take this class in the summer or you will be sorry. You will spend every free minute reading 8 books over the summer. I went to work and then read for several hours every night.m
If you don't like to read a book a week, don't take this class. There are so many assignments and discussion. dBeware.
For a 2 month summer class you have to read a book a week, take a quiz on it, and write a 300-500 word discussion with 2 peer responses. THe mid term is a killer. It is a 1000-1500 word essay with 1 week to write it on top of reading a book and taking a quiz. Too much work for summer. Not possible to read all the material.
I took her online class, and it is an easy A. She assigns books to read for discussion posts, however, I always read a summary and got a 100. Basically, if you do the discussion posts and respond to others, you get a 100. There are quizzes on the books, however, no tests. Would definitely take her again!!!
Professor Sumner had laid out the best online class I have taken thus far. It was easy to follow and easy to find whatever you were looking for. There are a lot of books to read and a lot of discussions that you have to do. But, for the most part the discussions are pretty easy, as well as the quizzes following each book.
I took this class online, and I can say you would have to try to not get an A. Sumner provides feedback on all of your discussion questions and the quizzes are not tough. Would definitely take again.
Lots to read but easy class. She definitely loves what she does.
Just like everyone else has said, she requires a lot of reading; however, the reading assignments are actually interesting. Other than that she is super easy! TAKE HER. :P
The class is interesting over the summer, but the long midterm research paper is just not doable when you also have to read long novels, participate in lengthly discussions, and take a book quiz. The paper imo ruins the class. Other than that, she is a good teacher. bewar of that long midterm research paper though.
You read an incredible amount of books over the summer. If you don't like to read, don't take the class. You have to make a long discussion post every week and give a medium length reply to 2 other classmatess. You also have a quiz on every book and tests. You also have a long midterm paper that is a pain. I believe it was 6 pages long
I took this claass last summer and it involves reading about 6 books, long discussions each week, and a quiz. . I would take another teacher simply due to the long midterm paper. Dreadful.
I LOVE Professor Sumner. I was really intimidated to take this class but she is very helpful and makes it fun and interesting. She is really understanding when it comes to the struggles of being a student. Would most def. take her again
LOVED THIS PROFESSOR. Amazing feedback and support. I am not an English or writing major and she made learning about this medium interesting and inspirational.
If you're into summer reading for your vacation, then this class is for you. You have to thoroughly read the books to be able to abnswer the long discussion posts and replies to classmates. Quizzes are not bad, but the reading and writing every week is monotonous. Mid term paper 7 pages long is painful.
I had Melanie this summer for World Literature and I was pleasantly surprised. We only had one book to read which was maybe 120 pages, two other very short stories the rest of the material discussed were movie based. The quizzes were short, easy and multiple choice based, which was a plus. Overall, great class! Take her by all means!
I took this online during Spring Semester. Six books, weekly discussion posts, essay tests, and a very painful 7+ page term paper. It's A LOT of work for your grade, and points off for an erroneous comma in your discussion posts and paper. Get ready for a two class workload and hours of reading. I DO NOT recommended if you work full time.
You have so many books to read with very picky questions. You have to do 3 projects that are time consuming compared to other classes. Even though it is an online class, the projects are quite complex utilizing new technologies. Long research paper also. Avoid.
You have to read six books and most of them are over 300 pages. You have a book club in which you have to write three long responses test and an eight page midterm. Avoid taking this professor
Take Prof. Sumner!! She is so supportive and gives great feedback on your writing. If you want to be a serious writer, I implore you to take Fiction Writing and Advanced Fiction Writing with her. She creates an engaging and interesting learning environment. I highly recommend her!
Prof. Sumner is a great professor! Our class discussions were personal as we all got to better know each other. She wanted us to talk deeper than the cookie cutter discussions that happen in every class. If you put a little effort in your work you will get an A. She is the best english professor at KSU!
Dr. Sumner made ENGL 2110 unbearably easy with the very generous quizzes that cover only major details from the readings combined with the relatable discussion topics and overarching semester course theme. I absolutely recommend that you take this course if unconventional course structure is your preference.
Assignments are varied and more fun than typical Lit classes. Final assignment is a happiness project. Overall, ok but a little on the bi-polar grading scale. Class average on one assignment was a 50. Something was lost in communication for that assignment.
Professor Sumner is one of the best lit teachers I've had at KSU. I took her class over the summer and you have two short books to read and then 2 short stories that she provides to you. The assignments were simple and fun and the quizzes and final at the end are a breeze. She does have you participate in discussion posts, but they're not difficult
I love Professor Sumner! I am currently taking her in the Spring. She gave us a total of 4 books to read, all of which were super interesting. The discussion and quizzes over the books were pretty easy. It's pretty easy to get an A in the class if you try. She is super understanding and caring if something comes up. Definitely take her!
Professor Sumner is a GEM. I am not an English major, and she is not like other professors that assumes that everybody is one. I never actually read a book and got an A in her class. The discussion posts are an easy A if you put some effort in. And she truly cares about her students (she gave everyone a 100 on the final project b/c of COVID).
Super easy class with such a caring professor. The books assigned are not at all difficult to understand/read. She truly wants you to pass and makes the class accessible in a way that this is possible while keeping the topics interesting unlike most professors. Highly recommend taking this class!
She rants about there being no tricks or surprises in her course and that fiction writing should be fun. Regardless of what she says when it comes to grading she takes off points for anything and everything. Oh, and don't disagree with her on anything because she will take off points just for having an opinion that differs from her own.
This class is very easy and she is such a sweet professor! All you do in her class is read 4-5 books and write short essays about them. But the prompts are very easy. The books you read are nothing crazy and actually very enjoyable. She is a very light grader.
I really enjoyed taking her class. Im not a big reader and I never liked english, but she made the class really easy. There wasn't any papers, which was amazing! We just had to read 4 books throughout the semester. but the assignments were easy and straightforward. definitely recommend taking her class.
Prof. Sumner is kind and the class is interesting. The quizzes are easy even if you didnt read the material carefully, and the books she chooses can be related to students personal experiences, which are shown in discussion posts. Posts are graded easily, and you learn a lot about other world perspectives. If you put in effort, youll get an A.
Professor Sumner was amazing for world lit. She made the class very easy to succeed in as long as you read the books and do the quizzes and discussion posts on time you should defiantly do well. I will say though if discussion posts aren't your thing this class does involve many posts however that's a given in most lit classes
For all you non-English majors out there, this is the World Lit class you want to take. Assigned reading and watching was enjoyable, the quizzes were easy if you had a general knowledge of the books, and the discussion posts were basically a participation grade. No big papers or essays. We read four different books over the entire course.
Easiest literature class Ive ever taken! There were about 4 books to read, as well as a few supporting texts for each unit and there were two units that included a movie. At the end of each unit, all we had to do was make a concept map and respond to 5 posts. No essays! There was one project at the end as well as a final which was extremely easy.
The class is easy, read 4 books, each book has easy supplementary material, a quiz and a discussion. My only complaint is that there seemed to be some political motives behind the reading material and assignments but the easy A makes up for it.
This class is more of a Racial Studies class rather than a World Lit class. Lots of comparing and contrasting based on racial and class lines. Final project is a "Community Project" that requires students to look for racial and class divisions so that you can make a plan to help solve the problems. Take this class if you are a fan of woke garbage.
asynchronous class. easy a if you do the work. 4 required books and a couple of movies. short quizzes for each book and a discussion for each one. simple community project at the end. final exam over all of the material from the semester (ie. books, interviews, movies). I would take this class again.
Please avoid this professor at all costs. She has no empathy for students with disabilities. She is also racist lowkey and does not care for your success.
Professor Sumner lacks a key element that is necessary in every educator: compassion. NO class is more important than one's mental/physical health, especially when the student suffers from seizures. This is revolting to see, and action needs to be taken NOW.
Disgusting how ableist this professor is. Should I even call her a professor? Teachers like this must take responsibility for their actions. There is no reason a teacher like this should have a degree or should even be teaching. How infuriating is it to disregard a students health from something they could not control. FIRE IMMEDIATELY!!!
Doesn't show sympathy nor respect for her students. Do not take if you care about your mental health. Can't even believe she was hired to educate others...
It should not even be said that this professor is discriminatory towards disabled students. We are all human, if something not planned happens tomorrow, we as people should not be expected to do assignments when we are injured, grieving, or have a medical issue come up. SHE IS ABELIST! She has revealed her true colors, and should not teach.
For someone who teaches English, this professor has no ability to understand that when students are having health problems, they should not have to come to class. Fire this teacher immediately. This is a disgrace to Kennesaw State University, and has no right to even be able to teach or have a degree. Make sure she is put in her place.
a disgrace to kennesaw state university.
Ableist woman who does not value your personal health or understand life happens outside of her classroom.
what a horrible professor. who can plan ahead for a seizure? would be surprised if she gets to keep her job from this. would give a 0/5 if i could.
so fun fact: you cant plan for seizures and get your assignments completed on time. the fact that a grown adult has to be educated on this stuff is ridiculous! :/
Not worth taking her class at all. Only cares about herself and her work. You do not matter to her.
One of the most inconsiderate, rude and ableist professors at KSU. She doesn't value your life or time outside of her class and god forbid you have a medical emergency, in her eyes you should have anticipated the emergency before any assignments are due. Terrible professor, she shouldn't even have a job! 0/10!!!!!!!!!!
An ableist like Dr. Sumner should not be allowed to teach in any school. Schoolwork or assignments are not above ones physical or mental health. This woman has clearly shown that she cares more about coursework over the safety of her own students. No one should waste their money taking her class, she clearly wouldnt care if you died.
heartless and inhumane. deadlines are more important than your life.
awful. terrible. disgusting.
Horrible
She will not care if youre in the hospital with a seizure, all she cares about are her stupid assignments
Insensitive
terrible, just terrible.
Greatest professor of all time
Professor Sumner has a lot of nerve thinking that her class is more important than the physical health of her students. You're supposed to be a teacher, not an ableist. Learn how to accommodate your students in tough moments when they really need you. This is extremely embarrassing to our school.
This teacher puts homework over students well-being. This is never okay. The issues surrounding her must be addressed by the school.
Have a disability? Take this professor! The minute you have an episode and cannot complete schoolwork, she'll advise you "knowing that you have a medical condition, you might want to work ahead in order to get your assignments completed."
Completely tone deaf to the needs of the disabled community. Prioritizing a syllabus over health matters (in the middle of the pandemic) is disgustingly ableist. Please schedule your seizures or medical emergencies in alignment with the syllabus so it doesn't inconvenience professor Sumner. You don't care about your students outside of a paycheck.
If English is not your strong suite, then this is probably your best bet. No major essays, just 4-5 books, discussion posts, quizzes, and a community project. Do the work and you will be fine.
Melanie Sumner was great! I thoroughly enjoyed her class. It was original and thought provoking. Her assignments were steady and not too cumbersome.
Easy class! The professor is caring and has a clear grading criteria.
Previous controversies aside, and while not the warmest professor, this was by far the easiest college course I have ever taken. If you are even the slightest bit right-brained, you will do great. It was honestly my own fault that I did not get an A. Open book tests, PLENTY of time to complete assignments, and a good safe space for ideas.
Take Professor Sumner for World lit. She is very clear on what she wants from your assignments and is a very fair grader. Just do the work and look at the grading criteria. Please take her.
This class was very easy and graded off a quiz, a discussion post, and then 5 responses to that post. She gives 2 weeks to do it all. She gives links to the material needed for that week's assignments. I highly recommend you take Prof. Sumner!!!
Loved her course! She is a fairly easy grader and the readings you have & the assignments are interesting. It may seem like a lot of work in each module but you get 2 wks to complete it. Class consisted of quizzes, discussion posts, accumulated final, readings and short films. As long as you put enough effort in your assignments, you should be good
Very awful and should not be a professor.
