I felt she was a very well rounded teacher. She is very patient and dedicated teacher. What else ..... she is cool with turning in late homework :)
Good class, very smart teacher. She's not easy but if you can pass her class then you're definitely ready for the next class. She gives credit for HW but rarely gives extra credit. We also took 5 tests which I like b/c it helps you to bring up your grade if you mess up on one. If you show you can work hard she will reward you. Definitely recommend!

tests were really hard , her test blew my mind IT seems as though she expects you to know most of this already which also makes it harder on you ( wel if its your fisrt time taking this class)
i remember taking her class in the summer. it was pretty fun, she gave hw, counted as extra credit and turned in day of test. she let us use a page of notes for test. but her test were hard, even with that sheet of info. i took her class awhile back, so i don't know if she still does the same things, but her test were hard, but you will manage
She is very accesible and helpful to all students. Nice to talk to. Lots of homework; but it helps whent taking tests and finals. Highly recommend her if you are serious about learning.
she's really very nice and teach very clearly, but much assignment. And she will give some chances for extra credit.Only you listen carefully, you don't need to read the textbook.
my first time taking this class, very intense. must attend class EVERYTIME, must do all the HOMEWORK, and you'll do fine. once you slack off, you'll be off track for the rest of the semester, and you'll have to retake the class again. =( DO ALLLLLLLL THE HOMEWORK, theres a LOT, but do it.
very helpful and will work with student. If you are having trouble with math she will take the time to help you and she spends alot of time in the math lab. The homework is also due when the tests come up which are like 2-3 weeks apart.
Haha thats funny, she is the only teacher marked in the "X" column.
has a thick accent, a little hard to understand her. She is cheerful, and does make an effort to help students. She devotes a lot of time to the Math Lab and gave E.C if you went to the lab. Must do ALL the homework or you will fall woefully behind. She is nice, but tough. Not an easy A.
she's nice, lots of hw,Clear and helpful, I think i'll end up w/ a C =( cuz I don't study for my tests, slacking off on my hw...definitely take her if u want to learn. I gotta say, she's very understanding.. Oh..and she's friendly too so don't worry, u can't dislike her.. her " T accent" was a bit annoying at first but u'll get used to it, haha..
for int student,realy bad
Very cool teacher strict on certain things but not to strict she is my favorite math teacher in all of ELAC recommend her.
needs to improve in her english language. She acts rude at times. Needs 2 slow down on the lecture. Gives quizs every monday. Knows how 2 teach.
needs to improve in her english language. She acts rude at times. Needs 2 slow down on the lecture. Gives quizs every monday. Knows how 2 teach.
Dont take her unless you have a free schedule. Youre gonna need time to study and time to rly focus on her classes. She gives lots of hw and her tests are pretty hard. You screw up on a portion of a problem and she marks alot off. So take her only if this is ur only option.
Goes very, very fast. covers about 2-3 section per class meeting. gives ALOT of homework.MUST DO ALL WORK.take her if you jhave time in your hands.
Melanie is awesome! I took statistics with her last semester. She pretty knows her stuff plus she's helpful. She gives some homework but not to much. You need to spend some time on math then you will be fine. She's a pretty understanding person whenever you have situation just go to her and ask for help, she definitely will help you!
Good teacher. She knows what she is talking about. She helps out if you need the help. Has an accent that is hard to understand at first but after you get used to it. Leaves H.W. often but its not a lot of problems. She covers sections fast but she covers them well so just go to class, study, do the H.W. and you'll be fine. If you miss a quiz or te
She is an awesome teacher! It was kind of difficult to understand her in the beginning but after you just get used to it. She does leave homework but you have a whole week to do it. She tells you when the quizzes are. The test as well. And she always gives practice test. Totally recommend her. Im going to take another class with her. =]
Melanie is simply AMAZING! I am currently taking her Pre-Calculus course and I am LOVING IT! she gives daily quizzes (which are based on the hw questions) and exams (which aren't that "hard" b/c she gives a practice test & she post solutions)! She is a truly a gem among thorns (zheng)
Professor Xie was demanding, and expected perfection!! I enjoyed the class cause we learned everything we need to know to help us in Calculus!!
She's very demanding, but it's for your own good if you want to do well in calculus class. Quizzes every day so you have to keep up with the material. She makes sure everyone understands and is willing to spend time explaining it to you. Managed to get a B even though i failed most of the quizzes, which where 20% of the grade. Highly recommended.
Melanie is EXTREMELY helpful, you can find her in the math lab. The language skills can be a bit of a problem, it can difficult to communicate with her...her accent however is not such a big problem. She is fair in grading her test, she won't try to trick you, she will even give practice test. Overall, she is great, if u want to learn math, take he
she is a very talented enthusiastic professor, compared to most other teachers. if u need help with anything she'll explain it to u. make sure u go to class. she gave daily quizzes but that was helpful since most questions are similar to those on the tests. I loved her. prepares you well. planning on taking another class with her.
Melony is one of the best professors ive ever had here at elac!!!
Melanie really made learning elementary statistics a pleasure and is an asset to the faculty of ELAC. Her weekly quizzes and monthly exams made learning and applying the material much less of a chore than it could have been had she simply given formulaic quizzes and exams with little concern as to whether the material had been adequately taught.
Too, too, fast! Boy it seems like she gets some sick pleasure by going through the whole text fast rather then seeing if anyone can comprehend what she is teaching. She is demanding which is not a problem I understand that. However, she lacks the skills to be an understanding instructor and human being. Expect to learn on your own.
She is one of kind. She knows her stuff, she's helpful, she keeps you busy, and if you really want to learn, take her class! Oh! Translation of her cool accent: sits = six, poah= point, and ballo= borrow.
I could tell that she is an extremely experienced math teacher. She teaches well with a slight accent but really nice. Lots of quizes but who says it's easy.
She was really helpful. I took her class in the 5 week winter session. She advised students not to take her class if we weren't trying to replace a Math 115 grade. I chose to stay even though this would be my first attempt at 115. I went into her class with some knowledge from my 112 class. I passed with a 'B'
Mel is the bomb!!! this instructor has a natural nack for teaching. Has patience to help you out. I hate math and she really gave me the confidence to work and get better. She is fun to talk to and a great teacher. TAKE HER!!!!!!
I love her! I hated math and didn't quite understand a lot of it before I took her. She is the best :)
Worse teacher ever. Extremely unclear on her teachings, and her heavy accent makes the matter worse. Barely gives out homework and practice. If you want a quality teacher that can teach effectively and efficiently, don't take her class.
Never seen a worse teacher. She just fails to effectively teach her students
She is an absolutely horrid teacher. I was fooled by the rating to take her class, I regret it. She is a hard teacher, but that's fine to me. What made her a bad teacher is she cannot teach AT ALL. Be expected to study on your own to succeed.
She does not put an effort into teaching the class. Most of her class material does not require thinking, the her teaching method is unclear, useles, and extremely boring. Her accent also proves to be annoying and even lowers her teaching clarity by yet another level. As some of the reviews stated, you will need to study the book on your own.
A very bizarre and rude teacher. Don't take her.
Extremely bad teacher. Really needs to learn how to speak English properly. She is also a bit rude at times.
she is a really good teacher! she always tries to explain every all the problems we had trouble with
there were too many homeworks and quiz, she took out too many scores when you just have a little bit mistake.
I can't believe all the negative reviews about her... I took her for 115 and she made everything so clear even for folks who were struggling. Now I'm taking 260 with Deutch and you don't know how many times I wish I had taken it with Melanie. Melanie gives you a lot of work not to torture you but to prepare you for the next level, unlike Deutch.
she is a good teacher, but her test is hard to get A+.
She is the greatest professor ever!!She is nice and actually teaches very well!!Take her class and you will learn so much!!I took her precalculus and now i am taking stats with her, she teaches the lecture so well that you understand it.And yes, there is homework and quiz, but math need practice.
She is a wonderful teacher! I took her for math115 and passed with no problems at all. All her tests are straightforward and are all on her website so you can review them. She makes math seem easier because she shows things step by step and is really easy to understand. TAKE HER you won't regret it!
she is nice and explains thing good. her accent got in the way lots of times, and she kept complaining that we were falling behind compared to her schedule. i do not recommend her.
Horrible. Too many quizzes and goes way too fast during lecture. Take Calc with another professor if you want to learn.
When lecturing she lectures too fast and you can't really understand what she's saying. She expects you to finish quizzes in 10 minutes. She's rude at times. I regret taking her class.
she is a good teacher. if u lazy, then don't come to school to study. if u do hw, u will get A in her class because the hw will basically be similar with the test
Shes good, goes a little fast but if you take the time to ask her questions she will clarify everything. My only 2 criticisms are that she collects all of the homework the day of the test which allows me to procrastinate and shes subtly condescending. kind of felt like she favored the asian kids in my class, not implying anything im just sayin :p
She's very clear and precise. Any questions you have she clarifies for you if you take the time to ask her for help. She doesn't favor anyone I assure you, she's very fair. Definitely recommend her!
Quite a nice teacher!! attendance is a must if yu want to pass her class. She will answer any questions you have. very patient. The notes you take are helpful and they WILL be on the tests, she'll tell you.Funny accent but you'll know wat she's saying. textbook sometimes used. DO the hw!! it will help ur grade. hw do on test days so yu have time.
lectures are super clear and her old tests are online which helps for studying. quizzes weren't too hard and she'll drop your lowest quiz grade. not a hard class, just have to put in some effort
A lot of homework, crazy to death. Spent tons of time doing those time comsuming homework. You have to do a lot of effort to get an A
Melanie is a really a great teacher. Shes so helpful and shell go over any problems you need help with. I recommend her to students with good work ethic.
she is very helpful..if you have a question dont hesitate to ask she will gladly answer it. she is super nice
Melanie is cool, she's always there if u need help, her test are a bit challenging but hey calculus shouldn't be just plug and chug. I think she prepares really good for upper division courses and even for ODE'S if she cant solve it. Harjuno usually helps her (her husband) which is even better because this guy is quite smart!
do not take her for calculus. gives ridiculously difficult tests with material not even covered in class and expects students to know how to solve it. rushes through all sections.. has the least students remaining out of all other calc classes.. go figure
She doesn't assign HW but she gives a quiz at the beginning of each class, Her tests are NOT easy but also not V. hard. Make sure you take notes in class and do her previous tests bec she takes problems from her previous tests and good luck. If you are a math major I highly recommend her.
YOU MAY THINK SHE S NOT FRIENDLY AT FIRST, BUT AS LONG AS YOU STUFY HARD AND FOLLOW HER ,YOU WILL FIND HER REALLY HELPFUL AND COOL.SHE IS STRICT- QUIZS AT THE BEGINNING AND THE ENDING OF VERY CLASS IN CASE YOU ARE LATE AND LEAVE EARLY.HER HOMEWORK IS REALLY A LOT!!ALL IN ALL, I RECOMMEND HER IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING!
Melanie is a very good professor she is really helpful some times she could be strict but if you seek her help she will be more than welcome to help you oh and she also lets you use the old editions for the textbook.
must do homework? important
Best math teacher I've ever had. Extremely helpful. Yes she's kinda strict, yes she gives A TON of work, & yes you actually have to earn your grade, but hey it's math & this isn't high school anymore! She is the only teacher that has ever made math easy to understand for me. Take her if you want to be whipped into shape for the next math level!!!
Hard to understand at times, but she will go over problems you have trouble with at the beginning of each class. Does not check homework, but do it anyway it will help for quizzes and tests. A test every two chapters and a quiz once a week. Take notes! Textbook often not needed, she puts everything on the board anyway.
I am a hard working student, I did everything she assigned. I was maintaining 4.0 GPA before her, she gave me a B and ruined it. I wish I took her class.
If you struggle with math, DON'T take her. She isn't a bad professor, she just isn't for everyone. She goes through the material too quickly and you will get lost. You can be absent 5 classes before she drops you. Do your homework, even though she doesn't check it. Do the practice tests on her website. She does offer extra help during office hrs.
This teacher seems to get off by having a bad attitude. She goes way to fast on her lectures, is not easily understood, and does not really teach the way she is supposed to. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She explains everything well for you to understand and has you practice them in class. She evens ask if you need her to review on anything. Quizes are 2 times a week. Every 2 weeks there's a Test. Assigns no homework but encourages you to practice at home. Give progress reports to see where u are at. I recommend her. I'm going to take her again.
She rushes through lectures, it's hard to write and keep up while she teaches. Gives quizzes every time class meets( NEEDS TO STUDY). Material is not always cleared. Homework is overwhelming. Only a few people if not 1 get A'S on her tests. Take her if you are going to give your 120% effort.
She will help you if you ask for it. Her lectures are rushed, textbook is mandatory, as well as attendance (she will drop you). She seems to enjoy people failing/having the majority of the class drop, which isn't very professional. There's a reason only a small few pass her class, she should work on her teaching style.
I really wouldn't take her unless you have the extra time to do the homework, and can withstand the endless procession of quizzes. Consider this a fair warning. It's one I wish I had heeded.
If you study you will pass, you can't slack off and if you miss a day you might miss a lot but she's good at teaching she keeps you up to date with your grade I would recommend her unless your a slacker
I wouldnt take this class. She seems to have joy in watching students struggle and she pretty much calls you dumb. She will take points off everything, even as useless as an equal sign or a question mark (that doesnt need to be there ) wouldn't take, homeworks ridiculous.
She was really good at explaining in her lectures. You did have to study though like really math you need to study in order to pass. She is willing to help and does throw out alot of quizes but I mean they were easy. It's basically on what she taught that week. I would take her again.
So far for college(80+ units) this has been my most difficult class that I had to spend the most amount of time on. I would literally spend days doing homework that demonstrated problems completely different than what was being taught. Shes honestly a nice person but that HW kills and ends up confusing you. I wouldn't recommend if you want an A
I took her for math 110 and 115 and I have to say she is a pretty cool teacher. She's tough and kinda blunt put she cares about her students. I would take her again.
Great teacher, so far my favorite at Elac. The class is fast so you need to stay on track. I like how she teaches she made math way more easier to understand and this is coming from someone who hated math in high school. I passed this class without a book because she's that good although I still strongly recommend you purchase one.
Melanie is a great professor; however, she could be a bit confusing at times. She gives great feedback and looks out for her students. She gives a progress report after each exam, so students will always know where they stand. The homework is time consuming, but worth doing it. She gives random pop quizzes at the beginning of class, so be on time!
I have taken Melanie for 3 classes already all different courses and she is an amazing instructor. I would recommend her . if I could I would take her for all my math classes lol Make sure to do your hw which is a huge part of your grade at the end
She is super awesome and very cool!! I had her for math 110 & 115. Do your hw because she checks it and it goes towards your grade; easy A. Quizes are easy and she reminds you ahead of time. Her tests are okay. If you do the homework you will pass the class.
Expect to have a quiz every week. Pay very close attention to lectures, and be aware of mistakes with numbers; she tends to get her numbers switched up. Exams are tough but she puts up previous class exams on her website. TAKE ADVANTAGE! Overall, not a horrible class but tough.
I took her 115 Math class at first she was showing her self strict but then she showed very friendly to us. She is an excellent professor, if you want to take her class and pass it, Do ALL the HW and study for the quizzes that will help you A LOT.
summer 2015. She is great and doesnt mind explaining things clearly. would surely take again.
I took her in Summer 2015 at SMC. Best professor!! Thank you Melanie!
Great Professor I have ever meetShe is very awesome
Made math easy.
She's a part time teacher at SMC as well and I would not recommend her. There are multiple mistakes in lectures so in the test you'll likely get them wrong. She's sweet for a person but in terms of being a student, she isn't the best professor to teach Statistics because it is a difficult class and she makes it complicated because of the errors.
she told this cute guy to leave the class, because he said he was checking the time not texting during lecture. and refused to register him in the class. her teaching style is boring anyway. students falling asleep during lecture. my classmates dropped. Im stuck because my program fye requires me to complete the class. going to class is a nightmare
This professor's teaching style is mediocre at best. I took Calculus 1 with her over the summer, and she gives quizzes every day and explains some concepts well, but others horribly. Only take her class over an accelerated session if you have already attempted the class once. Tends to dot on A students. Will interrupt you when you ask questions.
She great, her lecture is very clear. Test is not one difficult than her lecture.
One of the most difficult teachers I have had and if you and math don't really speak the same language, I suggest you don't have her as your professor and plus she teaches way too fast.
This professor by far is the worst ever ! I took her last year as a freshman. I previously took statistics in high school, so I thought to myself, this class should be a refresher WRONG! She assigns over 20 pages of notes per class day, she expects too much when she cant teach, hard to understand has heavy accent. Worst ever! Good luck !
Assigns reading logs from the textbook, but they're easy points and makes the lecture easier to follow. Was tougher at the start of the semester but very helpful towards the end. Makes study guides out of previous classes' tests and writes new tests specifically for the class. Uses a cheaper textbook too. Allowed heavy calculator use for my class.
I highly recommend her if you are a studious student. You only need to do your homework and take a quick look to read the new lessons, you will get lots of scores. and she gives you extra credit alot. She is willing to explain all of your concern. I really love her!
If you struggle with math I do not recommend her. She has a strong accent and is very hard to understand. Not helpful when you ask her questions. would only take her as a last resort. must show up for class or she will drop you!
She is a nice professor she has notes you can print out amd homework you can print out as well she has everything set. However her accent is very thick and personally could not understand her. She will explain things to you and there is quizzes in the start of every class. Being late is bad very bad because of the quizzes in the start of the class.
kept getting ignored everytime id answer questions she would ask the class.
Great professor, always accessible, and even though stats was hard she made it less stressful and taught well.
No one got A in my class. She claimed that the final exam was easy. Well, the highest score in the final is 80 something and the mean is 40ish so it means either she is wrong or we suck. However, there is one good thing about this class. Because it is so hard, the Cal 2 I am taking from another instructor is surprisingly easy.
Her notes really do help and you will learn a lot, but get ready to write a lot during lectures. Participation is mandatory, but get ready to get roasted when you are confused about something cause she dislikes explaining things over and overall. Also, she does have a heavy accent and isn't the nicest.
I actually enjoyed Melanie's class (F19). She's very clear on her lectures and gives notes that we add on. Show up to class ON TIME because that's when quizzes are given. Study because she makes you work for the grade you get.
Compared to other professors, Xie is a very good maths professor. She is very organized and her lectures are clear. She is a good grader and the homework she assigns is actually helpful so make sure to do it. They're very similar to those in the scheduled quizzes/tests. Don't be shy to ask for help either she is very flexible and disposed to do so.
Professor Xie is literally the best professor I've ever had. She cares about her students, provides all the streamlined information needed to pass her class and she is so helpful in listening to what her students need. I couldn't stand math before her but now can see how your professor makes or breaks the subject for people. 100% recommended!!!
I took Ms. Xie for Calc 2 during the spring of 2021. She honestly cares about her students learning the material. Additionally, she put the solutions of previous exams on Canvas to help students with mastering the material. No textbook use at all too, everything was done on WebAssign.
Nice teacher. If you want to pass learn from the SI tutors, they teach better than her and plus she gives you extra credit if you decide to go to an SI tutor.
Really hard professor. She gives out A LOT of homework everyday, plus 6 hour zoom with only two 15 minute breaks! On top of having a quiz every day too. Way too much work and not worth taking her class to be honest.
Honestly this class was really hard. I took this class fully online. She assigns a lot of homework and the online homework takes forever. If you don't get the answer correct you have to keep doing it until you get the answer correct which is annoying. I went to her office hours every week and I feel like this still didn't help me. Good luck!
It's A LOT of homework so if you work full time good luck. Tutoring and going to her was not helpful. I had to teach myself but even then the material is difficult.
If you are taking calc for the first time do not take her! She gives a lot of homework (online and worksheets) and the homework is nothing like the tests. She's understandable but the tests catch you off guard. She teaches you what 2+2 is but the test wants you to find the integral of some random sh**. She talks down on students too often.
It should be known that most of her class drops by the end of the semester.
Professor Xie is tough. She explains the material well but easily gets frustrated with students. Although she's good at explanations, she's unsupportive. She doesn't help students if they're confused about how to access homework or quiz-related difficulties. You have to pay to get access to homework and tests. Tests are proctored.
Took her over the summer and ended up failing it. Just took the same class with a different professor over the fall semester and passed with an A. Shows proof of how hard of a professor she is. Talks a lot of smack, someone needs to check her. I could barely understand her English I'm sorry. Don't take her unless you wanna take Calculus twice.
I took her in winter and I regret taking her. I have taken calculus 3 and thought I could follow her even though her rating was so bad. Turns out it was not true. She give HW, classwork, quizzes and 4 exams not dropping lowest scores. She might change the rules very often. There is HW everyday and one section might takes for at least three hours.
In Math 215 People Say MATH215 is the Easiest Math Class. Well Yes and No its NOT easy if you dont have Basic Algebra Skills (Pre Algebra Stuff i reccomend taking Pre Algebra or Elementary Algebra before this). Melanie Xie is Caring but has speedy teaching so Keep taking Photos as she lectures. Since writing notes takes longer. 📸 then 📝
Math 215 Math For Elementary School Teachers technically Algebra Readiness in Disguise. Half Sheet if Notes allowerd but not use examples from Practice or your notes. While other professors allow you to use your notes on your half sheet. She made Math 215 harder than designed. She expect us to know the material fast like if im In Asian School.
Highly recommended
My professor is an exceptional mentor who has greatly influenced my learning journey. Their deep knowledge, patience, and willingness to help make complex concepts easy to understand. They inspire and challenge me to grow, and their support has been instrumental in my development.
I felt her class was very fast paced and a lot of the time could not keep up. There are quizzes each week which can affect your grade a lot. Sadly I could not understand her accent most times as well. She does seem like a nice person but just felt pretty overwhelmed in her class. A lot of people dropped out as well as the semester went by :/
Professor Xie is a tough grader, but her clear explanations and availability for extra help make the class manageable. Using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook was key for me.
She had pop quizzes every week, and would move onto next topic without students understanding lesson.
So bad!! Do not take this class. She gets numbers from the most random place does not explain anything! She just comes up with the random numbers and everyone gets confused! Moved on to another topic so fast before asking if students understand! Overall so bad worse class ever! I do not recommend AT ALLL!!!!
Difficult class!! Gives out a lot of homework only for it to be a small percentage of your grade. Your grade will depend mostly on test/quizzes which makes it difficult to maintain a good grade. She's very fast paced and doesn't explain the courses well.
the worst professor i've ever had. gives us a ton of homework for very little points, the work is very difficult to understand and she's so passive aggressive when you ask for help or for extra time on an already jam packed weekly schedule. such a tedious grader too. i can't stand her and would drop the class if i could.
She assigns a lot of work. It's impossible to actually learn the material. I am currently in week 2 of 5 in her summer course and I have never regretted taking a class in my entire career. She is just awful. Avoid her if you can.
i've never had a class deteriorate my mental health the way that this class has. if you don't listen to any other reviews listen to this one and avoid this professor if you don't wanna cry of frustration every day SHE IS THE WORST she purposefully switches up tiny details of the material so it's harder to understand and moves on really fast.
She is my hardest class! She gives so much homework it's insane! Whiny and annoying but a tiny tiny bit understanding. She will randomly accuse everyone of using AI for basically no reason though lol so just be careful
Bad learning material worse professor 👎🏼
i am actually dragging my feet to finish this class omg. SHE IS NOT GREAT!!!
this class caused me severe anxiety because of how difficult it was to manage it. it was a very big amount of work for such a small amount of points. i could not believe it. i've been so incredibly stressed out.
It's genuinely a miracle I passed this class bc it is not for the weak. She gives out so much homework for a small percentage of your grade and her lectures are hard to understand 85% of the time. Agree with others that she's a tedious grader. Idk if I'd recommend. Maybe do a longer form of this class, definitely not a 5 week course.
Not a good professor. My experience was the hardest 5 week course ever. You have to pay to access the materials, all tests are proctored, it's so much homework (written too) and it's hard to understand the recorded lectures. I couldn't believe the amount of work she assigned for such little time. Over half the class dropped out mid course. Avoidddd
