No lecture notes, slides, or podcasts, so god forbid you miss a SINGLE WORD. Doesn't use notes so lecture is an unorganized mess. To be fair we were rushed this quarter because the Chico fire reduced our class time, but the last week of lecture made ZERO sense and we couldn't catch up because NO SLIDES OR PODCAST. If you get her, have "fun".
Avoid her if you can't understand thick accents. Unorganized lectures, hard exams. Kinda makes me hopeless about organic chemistry :( Choose someone else even if their sections have a super long wait-list.
What can I say? AMAZING! She gives you all the material to be successful on her straight-forward exams. Tho the campus was closed for 2 wks due to Camp Fire, students should've used this time to study, instead of lazing around, because I know I did. I just barely received an A+ in the class, but that was from hard work. Ignore posts below plz...
exams aren't easy.
She is the worst professor ever. Very nice lady but horrible professor. Literally the hardest class I have ever taken. I know so much of the content but would get 30% on the tests. Do not take these comments lightly. Her curve of a 50% being a C is not helpful when the averages on your tests are 45% and below. Pretty much impossible class.
She is the worst professor I have ever take. I am normally a straight A student but barely made it through this class. Her lectures made no sense and her exams were extremely difficult. She's very sweet but she simply can't teach. She does not prepare you for the CHE 118ABC series. I do not feel like I am ready for CHE 118B. Thanks for my first C.
The two weeks postponed really took a toll and at the very end, she rushed everything all at once. She may be old but she really loves chemistry and she seems to care for her students and her grandchildren. However, it's a risk taking her, shes unorganized, exams are impossible & the only things going into the grade book are the quizzes and exams.
If you like chemistry and considerer yourself good at it... Go for it! She is a lovely old lady, but her tests are hard. Classes are heavy, the book doesn't help, and she is not the best teacher. I know, I tried my best but it wasn't enough to get a good passing grade.
Her tests are extremely difficult. Book problems did not compare to the exams.
DON'T DO IT!!! Nasiri tests on things that aren't from lecture/readings. Average for the final was 39% and more than half of the class failed. Lectures are disorganized and her accent is the heaviest I've heard. I am an A student and couldn't pull off an A. Don't get friendly confused with nice; no one could be nice and do this to their students.
Nasiri is the nicest old lady you'll ever meet; this does make up for the fact that here exams are extremely difficult. The final was completely unfair. She provides few resources to exceed and her lectures are unorganized. It is unfortunate that if you are a UC Davis bio sci major, you will most likely have to take her for 118abc at some point.
DON'T TAKE HER COURSE! I would even suggest you to wait till next quarter rather than taking her course. Heavy accent makes you hardly understanding her lecture. Also, lecture doesn't help exams at all! What she taught in class is irrelated to her exams. And no homework, which means you have to work on your own for midterms and final.
As sweet of a lady she is, she is so far THE MOST difficult professor I have ever had. Tests are based off of lectures, but her heavy accent makes it difficult to understand what she's saying. She takes notes on the chalkboard which are not only hard to see but are extremely messy. Grading was solely based on 2 midterms, final, and quizzes.
I took Nasiri for all 3 quarters of Ochem. I did decent, but I could have studied more. How well you do depends on how much effort you put in. Hella curved every quarter. I would recommend taking her for A and B if you know she's the only one teaching C, so that you can get used to her teaching style. Her 118B class is the most structured.
Very difficult professor. She has hard tests and low averages. Would not recommend, but in some cases she is the only professor teaching. Study hard or fail the class.
Im not genius when it comes to science classes. Best way to pass is go to class & copy the notes. Go back home and use the textbook w her notes to make it all click in your head. Look at the end of chapter reactions. Then do problems & practice tests. I did like 6 of them. Study 2 weeks in advance. It is possible to pass if you want it bad enough.
Doesnt know how to teach and expects the class to fail her midterms
Graded only by labs+midt+final Good thing is, her curve is amazing and 75% is A-, so make best use of it!! Tips about her exam is that you need to memorize every step of the mechanisms and have a general sense of synthesis problems. Also, she doesnt give nmr value for spectroscopy so you need to memorize them too. Memorize, practice, you are good.
Minus 1 for her countless mistakes during lecture: had to be corrected every 10 minutes by the 0.3% that actually knew what she was talking about. Minus 1 for horrible grading criteria: final grading was absolute trash. Minus 1 for not teaching nmr and/or very briefly mentioning something but still including it on the test. Plus 5 for peer tutoring
She's a tenured professor. Her grade cut off for a C- was a 45%. The class average was a 40%. She refused to move her cutoff down until students stormed the final exam viewing area. The way she writes exams is atrocious. She literally hasn't changed her final exam or style of writing it in forever, so if you find an old final, you'll pass.
You're honestly better off spending an extra $5,000 or so to take organic chemistry abroad just to AVOID this class. Horrible midterms and tests, her curve is nice but not enough. She should rewrite her exams to bring them up to age or at least be more intuitive. Everything on all of these exams were you either know it or you don't.
Her class was the closest thing I've ever came to failing a class. I've had friends get A's in her class, but if you don't take her for a or b, you're screwed. Sweet lady, worst prof. Her tests were outrageous, the average for the first midterm was 30/100. The highest score was 70/100. That speaks for itself. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Nasiri is best o-chem professor at UCD. She teach exactly what you need for her straightforward (and easy) exams. To be honest, they are more like worksheets than actual exams. I'm an international Chinese student so I don't know why people complain about her accent is easy to understand. A 76 is an A, start trying folks I got A+ on all exam
Most inexplicit, unclear lecturer I've seen. Somehow covers everything without explaining anything, the "whys" are self taught entirely. Exams are graded unfairly and valid syntheses that don't match her key aren't accepted. Spec problems are unbelievably hard although it's never been covered. Notes are filled with mistakes/contradictions.
Exams unrepresentative of material covered. You can understand everything in the notes and book problems but the exam is extremely random. Includes reactions not covered in class, tests specific nuances that aren't important, you need to guess through the entire predict the products section. The exams even contain typos! Lectures are also god awful
AVOID AT ALL COSTS, WORST CLASS AT UC DAVIS
Here are clear facts: I am taking this class in Spring 2019. Both practice midterms are from 2006. Practice final is from 2001. Only one practice test per exam given. Hardly any content from the midterms appeared on the final so if you think that if the tests mirror the actual exams, think again.
Literally memorize everything. The grading is SO UNFAIR. Teaches different things every quarter its so frustrating. I asked her a why question and she said just because. Like?? She said herself that the class isnt hard but that students just dont try hard enough. Her averages on midterms have been 30-40%. She doesnt care about her students
Dr. Nasiri is a very nice person who clearly loves chemistry. However, she is not a good professor. The lectures give the bare minimum of what you need to know and you are responsible for figuring out the rest. It is possible to get a good grade in her class but you HAVE to go to lectures. Try to find supplemental notes online and attend workshops.
Good teacher!
I took Nasiri for 118A and used to defend her, but my experience in C was a nightmare. She made so many mistakes in lecture, she tested heavily on the specific exceptions to the normal rxns and was not clear on classes of rxns and barely discusses theory to actually understand the rxn. I used to enjoy ochem, and she made me hate it, time to retire
Unclear lecturer with brutal, unfair exams. Routinely tests reactions from the book not covered in class. Somehow managed an A the whole series, my advice: reorganize notes into reaction and mechanism lists. Work through ALL suggested book problems, AATC tutor worksheets, Lievens synthesis and spec. Be able to write any mechanism from class blind.
While she isn't the best, some of the accountability for the low averages should be directed towards the students. Most people don't study correctly, thinking they can cram days before an exam, and the people who study consistently are getting 76+ for A's. Treat it like a math class. Do every problem you can find. Ochem will be hard with anyone.
Tests are unfair (written by TAs who don't even attend lecture). You can study as much as you want, but oftentimes it's out of your hands. I've done well in ochem with other professors but Prof. Nasiri's class was unreasonably difficult
I get all the hate but after taking her for more than a quarter you realize that she is very predictable. There are no curve balls on the tests, they're formatted exactly the same with maybe only two or three difficult predict the products. The textbook has a lot of info but she only tests on lecture material so you dont even have to open it tbh.
Nasiri makes me question the meaning of life as I get up bright and early for the 7:30am. I failed 118A with her and feared for my grade in 118B. Make friends in the class and from previous quarters. Practice every day. Aim for that 45% to pass then just move on or else lock yourself in a room to get that A. If you can, just avoid her entirely. <3
Go to class as tests are very lecture-based; expect to learn LOTS of mechanisms. With that being said, just because she teaches a mechanism in class does not mean that it will come up as such on the exam; she likes to "disguise" easily-identifiable mechanisms in order to confuse you and LOVES testing exceptions !! learning all exceptions is a MUST!
This is the first C+ I got after 2 years here and I've found this class to be most ridiculous. Nasiri is a worst professor I've ever had and her exams are nothing like the lectures. Avoid her at all costs!
Dreaded Nasiri. If you know how to study you will do well in her class. She gives you all the reactions necessary to succeed, you just have to know how to apply them. What helped me get a decently high A was making sure I copied everything she said, reviewing lecture material for at least an hour a day and practicing the problems required.
I will say this: Nasiri gives you a very fair warning to study for this class. She gives you all the material you need to succeed, all you have to do is apply it. Studying everyday for at least an hour and doing practice problems / mechanisms helps you understand the material. This class is NOT easy. however, with hard work you can get a good grade
Just DON'T. TAKE IT ANOTHER QUARTER I THOUGHT I COULD HANDLE IT BUT BOY WAS I WRONG. HER MIDTERMS ARE WILD.
Nasiri is a wonderful person, but a terrible lecturer. She would make constant mistakes in class and in turn make it difficult to follow along. She does not post any podcasts or slides so if you happened to get sick and miss a lecture goodluck. I did relatively well on the rest of the CHE118 but 118C with her was just insufferable.
An absolutely awful professor with zero regard for students. She started uploading her notes this quarter, except would purposely make them wrong so that students who were not able to show up every week to her 7:30am class (the buses don't even arrive by 7:30 sometimes) would be learning the wrong material. Decided to cram in 3 chapters.
The lab portion of this class is pretty easy to get an A in. However, Nasiri gives a final exam that is 50% of your grade. In her lectures the examples are very easy and her practice final questions are also not super hard. However, her final exam questions are difficult. Its hard to study for her final as well. Her final will bring your grade down
Took nasiri for 118abc and got two A-s and one B+. Halfway through started getting nightmares related to her classes. Please take another ochem professor if you can.
Shes okay. You can get a good grade but youll need to be pretty lucky on her tests and lab. Sweet lady though.
A PRE-MED NIGHTMARE. Worst class ever taken. Had to retake A and B and barely passed C. Maybe organic chemistry doesn't come to me but I stopped going to her class and got better grades. Impossible to understand. She's the only professor you can really take at this school if you're pre-med though. Would give a 0 if I could. Get a tutor!
Hard to understand and doesnt upload her lectures, only her unannotated lecture outlines which aren't very useful. Additionally her practice midterms aren't even close to whats on the actual midterms. Overall you should just wait for a different professor instead of taking it with this prof, even if that sets you back a quarter or more.
yes she has an accent and makes some mistakes on her notes (which is why lecture is important to catch them), the exams are difficult but she gives partial credit, go to peer tutoring and do as many practice exams as possible, pre set curve is great to help you know exactly where you stand, she really cares about her students wants us to succeed
Don't listen to all the rumors, Nasiri is not a bad teacher at all. She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Tests are slightly challenging but overall fair. Do as many practice tests as you can and study a little bit every day, not just the week before the exam and you will be fine.
Dr. Nasiri as person is really sweet, and seems to genuinely care for her students. However, as a professor ,she is awful in grading and presenting the material. She makes several mistakes in lecture and even on the exams. Her teachings often don't align with the textbook, and even her TA's don't understand some of her exams questions.
Nasiri has been one of the most difficult professor I've encountered so far at UC Davis. Honestly, the response to COVID-19 situation has been pretty bad. I'm simply teaching myself all of the material for 118C and lectures have not been helpful with her midterms. The only thing that has been saving from failing the class is HW and TA office hours.
Dr. Nasiri came through this quarter and was as accomodating as any professor could be.
Nasiri is by far the most incompetent professor I have ever had, due to her carelessness when presenting her lectures and correcting her mistakes, and her sheer inability to effectively teach a class. For example, during lectures she says "its up to you to figure out the mechanism" which is completely unacceptable. Don't take her, for your own sake
Was very understanding of the COVID/protest situation and accommodated for it. Lectures were very organized and she explained in depth. Expected you to remember things from past CHE118 classes. Know the reactions + do LOTS of practice problems and you'll be okay. Very cute accent. Jonathan Do's review/practice sessions were a life saver.
Gave decent cutoffs for grades, but wouldn't have to be the case if she actually taught the material so students wouldnt average a 50% on midterms. Only way to do well in this class is to get outside help from peer tutors/AATC because her lectures don't teach you anything. Pray for the curve.
Sweestest woman ever. She will test you on everything (yes that means the previous class material -you can't drop info, everything builds). Her tests are 75% rxns, so know your reactions/mech like the back of your hand. Be ready to adapt your learning habits -straight memorization will lead you to failure. This class is hard but not impossible.
Had her for 118B/C. My only complaint is the lack of practice she provides. You really need previous year's exams to have an idea of what to expect for exam difficulty, and she gives very little of that. Her exams during quarantine were far more difficult than her usual exams, due to open notes being available, and notes hardly helped me.
There's a lot of negativity on here about Nasiri, but she isn't all so bad. I have take 118A and 118B so far with her, and I have done pretty well in both. I had to pretty much learn everything on my own though with the help of tutoring and OH as the lectures are really confusing and messy. Practice, practice, practice!!!
Nasiri is a nice lady, but a bad professor. She does not convey the material in a way that is helpful for learning the material. However, her tests are straightforward and predictable. Spend most of your time studying the mechanisms/reactions provided in the textbook and DEFINITELY utilize AATC's online resources (at minimum). DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS!
Nasiri is a tough professor, but that may be due to the lack of practice in her class. There are text book problems and worksheets found through the AATC. Her tests are fair, but at times tricky.
I read the warnings about Nasiri. I ignored them because she was the only ochem professor. I shouldn't have. This class made me quit premed. No matter how hard I worked, my grade didn't improve. She is a sweet lady but brutal when it comes to grading.
Nasiri in a few words: hard but fair You will dislike her throughout the quarter, no doubt. But the material for 118B is hard no matter who teaches it. For Nasiri, try out all the resources and see what works for you: lectures, YouTube, ATTC academic tutors, she loves the textbook btw. Do a lot of practice problems, and you will be okay.
This professor's cutoffs are really unpredictable and are set on how easy she thinks the course is currently instead of how the students are actually doing. Basically ur grade is based on how generous she is with cutoffs and not on how well you are doing compared to your peers. Take lievens if ur looking for a prof with clear and sensible grading
Worst professor Ive ever had. She is impossible to understand and is absolutely terrible at lecturing. Explains organic chemistry topics in the most confusing way possible and overall is a terrible teacher. No sympathy for anyones grades and has unpredictable cutoffs. Basically the averages are in the 40s-50s because she sets everyone up to fail!
Nasiri is a terrible professor. She is a nice person, but I had to completely teach myself throughout the series. I spent hundreds of dollars in tutoring and her exams still were extremely challenging. Her cutoffs for this quarter were very unfair. Do as much practice as you can on your own and take another professor if you can.
I have never had a teacher like this. She made us use pre-recorded Spring Quarter lectures and held office hourse once a week. The lectures are useless and on top of that she put material in the exam which was not covered anywhere. Such a hard class and the average of the midterm WAS A 25!!!! i'm learning nothing and hoping curve saves my ass
Please do not take a class with Dr. Nasiri. The material on her exams does not correlate with what she teaches in lecture. If you want to do well, you need basically devote your entire life to her class. I have had 3 different o chem professors here at Davis and Nasiri is by far the worst.
Nasiri teaches you how to crawl in lecture; on exams she expects you to know how to do cartwheels, back-flips, handstands, & every trick in the course that you were never taught/exposed to before. She is ruthless. I studied so hard & learned absolutely nothing from her. Taking her class really made me feel depressed; takes a toll mental health
Honestly, Nasiri isn't as bad as people are saying. She has taught O Chem for many years so she really knows the technical stuffs well. O chem covers so much information, people can't expect by attending lectures would square everything. I followed her lectures, read the text book on my own, and brought questions to her office hours. It helped.
Her exams were very unpredictable this summer session. The averages were low and she did not offer a lot of extr help. You will definitely need a tutor to pass/do well in this class. Otherwise youre screwed. Follow her notes and do many many problems, especially exceptions.
Not sure why she is still a professor at Davis. First midterm average was a 41%. If that doesnt reflect the quality of the teaching I dont know what to tell you. Unfortunately shes the only professor usually available for ochem so there is no way around her. Good luck feeling extremely discouraged when u study hard only to be set up for failure
I took the whole 118 series with her and honestly she wasn't so bad. I took 118A two times and the first time was with Nurco. To me, she is a better choice since her tests give partial credit. Her tests were predictable. Try to find the past exams and go to Mariya's office hour. She is nice talking to in person.
Her class is just plain hard. 90% grade based on 3 midterms and each worse than the last! She is not very communicative and you have to go to her OH to talk to her. The midterm and quizzes barely give you partial points if any! I had to watch OCHEM tutor on youtube and still failed her exams.
Corrupt grading system (expect to lose 5-30 points off your exam score even after the scores have been released for a full week). Unpredictable course cutoffs. Absolutely horrible exams that are almost impossible to prepare for regardless of how many hours you put in. Blood sweat and tears is not enough to do well in this class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
DO NOT TAKE. I cannot stress that enough. She needs to be red flagged. She wants you to fail. She flat out said, my class is a prerequisite to premed, nursing and if you cant pass it you shouldnt move into the field. Shes sweet, kind, respectful. But old school, HARD! Quizzes weekly, labs weekly, and none of it are examples covered by her.
She's probably one of the coldest or most distant professors I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. She does not accommodate or work with her students. She did not offer material for a decent portion of the course, and expected the students and TAs to teach themselves.
Look, she is nice and tries her best, but she has a THICK accent which makes her lectures extremely difficult to follow. Her exams are ridiculously difficult, especially when compared to the practice problems she gives you. She is extremely difficult, and not a great teacher, sorry to say. Avoid this class if you are able, otherwise, good luck.
If you have to take 118A with her you might as well just not take it at all. Hard to understand her lectures. Average in the class will only get you a low tier C, which means around 40% of the class fails. For example: I got a high B+ on one exam and two others that were at the mean and only got a C in this class. Stay Away!!!
Hardest class I've ever taken.
I took Dr. Nasiri for both 118b and 118c so I became very used to her teaching style and her tests. She is a sweet woman and its obvious she enjoys challenging her students. Ochem is a difficult subject no matter the teacher, I would recommend students look into the AATC workshops to supplement the class. Her tests are challenging though.
She is not that bad as many people say. But you need to work really hard outside the class to be on top of all exams. She is a really nice lady!
This class is a straight-up nightmare, and I got an A. Avoid Nasiri at all costs; she does a terrible job explaining the material and the exams are very hard (40% average). That being said, if you want to do well, go to the AATC Specialist Workshops, take their advice for studying, and do the worksheets. They are awesome!
Very difficult. A lot of time spent decoding confusing lecture notes. Gives no practice problems to get ready for midterms and final. The way to do well in this class is to find old tests. Find folks who have folders of old tests and do them over and over again until you don't make mistakes.
Nasiri's lectures and notes are very clear, and she cares about her students. The exams are the hardest part. She puts questions that go beyond what you've read and challenge you to think outside the box. Read the textbook, study the notes, take the practice exam, and be sure to pay attention. Use all your resources, and you should be okay.
Nasiri has clear, reasonable expectations. Ochem is difficult no matter who you take it with. It's nothing compared to the work load in med school. If you can't handle her workload, then how do you expect to even survive med school? People have to realize that you need to be able to read the textbook on your own, not just blindly follow lectures
I'm a 4th year now and looking back at my entire college experience, Nasiri was the worst and most unfair professor I've ever had. The only reason people get A's is because of the curve. The exams were fundamentally unfair and unrepresentative of the material covered. Her lectures are unclear and you need to decode cryptic notes. Luck got me an A
Good lectures and wonderful head TA Andy!
Grades are based entirely on tests, which is a HORRIBLE way to design a class. Lectures are hard to follow, so I stopped watching them and watched unaffiliated videos and went to tutoring extensively. One plus is that the format of the tests are fair of what you're expected to know, but I'm 100% not learning from her. Why am I paying for this?
Test-heavy. Lectures are good. Tests are fair. Always available to answer questions. Dont listen to the comments disparaging her accent - I think thats a bit unfair. She should keep up her recorded videos as supplementary material once we return to in-person. Her lectures are succinct and informative
I have never felt so unvalued as a student. The lectures are from a year ago and the teaching is mediocre. What is tested is tricky and the expectations are too high for her level of instruction. If you want to do well you have to work hard and teach yourself. Exam averages are in the 40s let that speak for itself. No accountability whatsoever.
This has been one of the most challenging classes I've ever taken. Her lectures are from a year ago and still have errors and mistakes in them. I have to rely heavily on the textbook and watching Lievens lectures on Aggie Video. I don't enjoy Organic Chemistry anymore and it feels more like a chore. Be prepared to teach everything yourself.
The lectures were all recorded last summer and have many errors, like writing off the page and the lecture starting minutes into the video. The tests and quizzes are very difficult and you have to teach yourself most of the material from the book because a lot of stuff is not covered in lecture. 90% of your grade comes from just 3 tests.
She is definitely a nice professor in both lectures and her office hours, and asks our questions in patience. The hardest thing of the class are exams, no doubt that her exams sometimes test something out of the box or something she only mentioned in one sentence in lectures. The notes are unclear. To succeed in 118B, tons of practice is a must.
Came into this class nervous af due to all the rumors, and yet still shocked at how terrible it was. Her recorded lectures are super disorganized and hard to understand, so I ended up learning from Lievens lectures from years ago and textbook readings. Studied harder than I ever have and still got a 50 on 2 of the 3 exams. 10/10 would not recommend
Avoid if possible. Grade is 90% exams which were difficult & full of errors. Her few practice problems were ancient and not representative of the content. Lectures were difficult to understand due to lack of clarity/organization and her thick accent. Basically had to teach myself. Very hard to succeed without a tutor. Nice enough lady, bad teacher.
While I understand the bad rep, Prof. Nasiri's test are clear cut and are what she discusses in lecture. Her accent gets more understandable as the quarter goes on, and is not an obstacle to learning. The class is nonetheless challenging, and if you struggle with chemistry, Dr. Nasiri might not be the best option.
Everyone says Nasiri is hard, but that is because organic chemistry is not easy. I had Lievens and while she gives a lot of practice, I found Nasiri's lectures to be straightforward and better to understand. Drill practice problems like you mean it because this class is test heavy.
Nasiri is difficult and not a great teacher, but one grade wise her class is easier than other professors. You can easily get a B if you study hard, but getting an A is difficult. Everyone hates on Nasiri because she isnt a good teacher, but she is actually a very compassionate and understanding person if you reach out to her.
Her lectures are my favorite part of the class despite some obvious mistakes that she didn't fix. The lectures are relatively easy to understand compared to other professor. Straight memorization doesn't work in Nasiri's class! She doesn't expect us to memorize the pka value. However, the tests were super hard, we need to study hard for it.
Took this class in fall 2020, she is a nice lady. In lectures, she will show us a lot of reaction mechanisms to help us understand the flow of electrons, the key of ochem. However, she only had office hours once a week for 2 hours, which were not enough to answer questions for heavy ochem class. Lecture notes were sometimes confusing.
This course is graded by 3 midterms 90% of the grade and weekly quizzes based on the discussion 10% of the grade. If you don't want a class graded only by exams, don't take it.
I liked having her as a professor. Great curve and as long as you try, you can do well.
The exams in this class were definitely doable, but the grading keys are often wrong and often times problems are credit/no credit. There were 3 midterms each worth 30% and lab was 10%. Her small details and notes in lectures are important to know for the exams. This class just didn't click for me, but Nasiri wasn't horrible.
She is the sweetest person! However it REALLY seems like she doesn't care about the class. Everything feels so disorganized and lazily put together. Lectures are recorded years ago with a plethora of tech issues and they are boring, unimaginative, and present Ochem in a dry way. Take Lievens instead.
Nasiri is the kind of professor that tasks you with learning the specifics of 60 reactions in the course of 3 weeks and then puts brand new reactions that aren't in the notes or textbook on a test that's worth 30 percent of your course grade. Imo avoid taking ochem with her at all costs.
I regret every day why I am taking her.
I've had Nasiri for all of my ochem series and am about to finish. DO ALL OF THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS SHE RECOMMENDS DOING THAT ARE IN HER SYLLABUS FOR EACH QUARTER. Also, get an A in lab to help yourself out. Do not memorize reactions, UNDERSTAND THEM. That is what I have learned is crucial for her class. Ochem is hard regardless of your prof.
If there was any chance of me going into Chemistry, this class absolutely killed it. Did fine but most people didn't. Average for our midterms was around 30s-40s. I only survived because IB Chem. Would've failed otherwise. I can't believe I pay $$$$ in loans to get professors like this. Lectures are re-used and virtually no OH
Yeah she's a nightmare. I'm sure she's a nice person, but her class almost made me drop out of stem entirely. Made me cry every other day. She makes so many errors on answer keys and will change her mind last minute on important stuff. Her tests are incredibly difficult, conceptually, and hard to study for because she hardly provides any practice
By far the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of taking a class with. I'm sure she's a great researcher but she does not know how to teach in even the most basic sense. Lectures are absolutely mandatory, but utterly incomprehensible with no subtitles. Grading for tests is handled by TAs and is absolutely arbitrary. Do. Not. Take.
She is the genuinely good instructor who pushes you to think about what is going in tons of chemical reactions. Ochem is notorious hard no matter who teaches it but I am sure she has been doing a great job on it. Exams are mainly made the by TAs so hard exams aren't her fault. The only problem is that her notes have a few mistakes and errors.,
Nasiri is honestly one of the greatest professors I had. Her lectures were clear if you read the textbook ahead of time. Her tests were difficult but fair and the curve was good. I'm so glad I decided to take Nasiri over the easier professor because I learned so much in this class. I came out of the class loving ochem more than ever.
Nasiri makes ochem very interesting but at the same time the class is very difficult. Her test make you apply everything you've learned from the whole series but usually emphasizes the chapters you've been learning. Make sure to find practice test and do her recommended textbook problems for extra practice.
I had her online and she just posted all of the pre-recorded lectures she had been using the past year. It is a very lazy approach to teaching ochem or any class. There is no homework, and her lectures are the bare minimum that you need to know. Do the practice problems and get ready to do synthesis and mechanisms.
I think most of the negative reviews she receives are because ochem is hard in general. I personally think Nasiri is an amazing professor. Her lectures are clear and organized and she explains the concepts with comparisons and personification so that it's easier for us to understand. 10/10 would not take a different ochem professor
worst professor i have taken. every single exam has errors (in the question), which is confusing and time-consuming since they don't tell you till the exam is almost over; she is very inconsistent and confusing with grading. studying hard is not enough to get a good grade. 0/10 experience, almost dropped science major.
Nasiri is truly one of the nicest/caring professors I've had at Davis. I was scared initially to take Nasiri because of negative reviews, but she truly is nice. Tests are 90% of grade and they are very difficult, but she is nice/accommodating in online setting. I would take her also because curve helps the grade! She truly is a nice professor. :)
there was no partial credit, exams were always filled with mistakes that threw me off time-wise, i did terribly because of how horrid of a professor she is, wouldn't recommend at all
The worst. Ochem is hard, but nasiri makes it straight-up traumatic. Terrible lectures, unclear grading scheme on extremely difficult exams, horrible communication with TAs and students. DO NOT RECOMMEND. SPARE YOURSELF THE TORTURE.
Hard to understand, mostly self-teaching, exams are hard enough that averages stay around a 45% even when they're open note
I've never failed a class. I have a good gpa. This class put me through hell. I can't believe I didn't pass a class that I put SO MUCH effort into. Tests are very unfair and difficult. I even did her old tests as practice and they didn't help much. She changes things up a lot. Expect problems that make no sense. Averages in the 30-45% range.
Very difficult to understand due to her language barrier. You have to heavily rely on self-teaching. Reads off lecture slides instead of teaching. First two exams in my class were 40% average, the last one had 32% average until she found a "typo" and gave everyone 20 points. No curves/cutoffs were adjusted. Studied hard, failed harder. 0/5.
Kills your mental health and destroys your GPA, it's really not worth doing it unless you're pressed on time. The worst thing is if you're pre-med and you take a hard prof like this, your dream medical school like UCLA ain't gonna care what you've been through, they just care about your GPA. Remember this.
Nasiri is one of a kind. She will report students to SJA whether they are guilty or not. And I'm talking about 30+ students with no concrete evidence. She does not teach the best but acts as if she does. Her class is more of a review class than learning because she skips many crucial parts of organic chem that are necessary to understand concepts.
This professor doesn't know how to respond to/ignores emails and questions in OH. She was not helpful when I asked her for help throughout the entire quarter and I ended up getting an F. Even the TAs were just as confused in the class. I had studied for hours (only class I took in summer) and I failed and was miserable. Go for Lievens or Beal.
Exams are extremely difficult and confusing. High chance of wrecking your grade.
Let me just start of by saying, that this teacher is an absolute mess. I can't believe it that an institution like UC Davis would have her as a professor. She zooms through her lectures, doesn't answer questions, and struggles to explain important concepts. She will ruin your GPA. Whatever you do, don't take her class. You will regret it.
Ochem is gonna be hard no matter what teacher you have. You will have to work to understand Dr. Nasiri's lectures, and you will have to be self motivated to do practice problems and study for exams. Sometimes hard to understand her, but overall I've really enjoyed her class.
I dropped out of UC Davis because of her. I'm not kidding. She was the last straw that I needed to drop out.
Yes, organic chemistry is naturally difficult, but this professor does little to help. Lectures are clear enough in that she just reads off previously-posted notes with only minor additions. Test averages were consistently low (both 40%, SD 20); grades were adjusted by providing new cutoffs (45%+ for a C-). Be mindful of your mental health. FQ '21
She was probably the most horrible professor I have ever had in my life. I dont know how davis hired someone like this to teach this class. She is hard to understand, very difficult, her exams do not mirror lecture or discussion, and things are very rushed. The class structure is horrible. Do not take her.
I absolutely hated this class. Terrible teaching technique, terrible lectures, kills and drains your emotional and mental health. This dreadful class is the reason why I am switching my major. This abominable, atrocious, appalling, unbearable quarter happened because of this class. If you are able to not take this, I HIGHLY suggest DONT!! Xoxo
Nasiri's explanations during lecture were really unreliable and often made some of the most important concepts even more confusing, especially resonance and nomenclature at the beginning of the quarter and reactions/mechanisms nearing MT2+the final. Your success in 118A with her mostly depends on your ability to memorize the material by heart.
Organic chemistry is hard but taking this class with Nasiri as your professor is equivalent to buying a 1 way ticket to hell. Discussions dont really line up with what youre doing in lecture and will only partially help you prepare for midterms and the final. All I remember from class is Nasiri talking about her family I remember this one time
if you want to cry yourself to sleep every night, take nasiri <33 going to lectures is useless bc she j reads off of lecture notes which she posts. her exams ARE SO DIFFICULT FOR NO REASON. nice old lady tho just a horrible professor
Nasiri was the worst professor I've ever had. She is very smart and knows a lot about OCHEM but that doesn't mean she's a good professor. She only provides ONE practice exam for the midterms/final and the keys on them were wrong. Her lectures were useless because she just reads off a paper that has a lot of typos. Her teaching style is the worst.
Please, don't take this class with her if you have to handle too many other courses like me! I don't know about the other professors but the way she taught is hard to listen and many incorrect key answers. TAs did their best but they are still confused with her grading and answers. Despite that, she is very nice and try to help students.
i know ochem isnt a easy but this class was brutal. nasiri is a nice person but a bad professorher lectures are confusing & disorganized sometimes, she tends to jump from one topic to another w/o explanation & exam averages were never above the 50s. take this class with literally anyone else if you can :/ discussion wasnt much better either
Any review that says she's good is fake or written by a suck up. This is the worst professor I have ever seen. She does not teach the concepts well at all. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ANYMORE: Her pronunciation is so bad she is literally doesn't speak english. It's a joke that this school actually hired and keeps her as a professor.
I created a Ratemyprofessor account specifically to write this review. 350 characters is not enough to illustrate how bad of a professor she is so read all the bad reviews, they are informative. She should have retired years ago. I am appalled and frustrated with Davis for allowing her to continue. Infuriating, unacceptable, traumatic.
I have never been good at chem, but I found this class doable, dont panic if shes your professor! The weekly quizzes are very doable and easy to get 90-100% on if you study, they are important! The midterms are tough and it may feel like youre teaching yourself, but there are lots of resources online! Use discussion manual and textbook!
She wasn't a mean professor, but none of her lectures helped me learn. I had to learn using outside resources in order to understand the material. The material wasn't hard to understand, but Nasiri would give difficult test questions that we never really went over.
Worst Prof ever. Nice lady but sorry I don't think she should be teaching. 40% ave on the final, overall ave of the class 52%. Yes, OCHEM is hard but this class was something else. You can't have a life if you want to pass this class. Never cried so much in my life or studied so much just to fail barley. Can't wait to do this again with a dif prof
I'm glad to be done with this series. I hated 118c, the only thing that made it bearable was our head ta who was absolutely amazing. I went to aatc every week and still couldn't get much above average on these exams . The lecture style is not good for how in depth we need to understand the material for exams.
Dr. Nasiri is a nice person, but her lectures and slides were not very clear. She has an accent but I got used to it and had no problem understanding her after the first week. No HW so the midterms and finals are worth a large percentage of the grade. Limited practice problems provided, so do the recommended practice in the textbook!
Honestly theres a lot to say about this class, if you gave her a good rating its on site. With the lack of resources provided, zero partial credit and the horribly laid out midterms and finals (more spelling errors then you could count) this class is just sets you up failure especially with the preset curve she refuses to lower. Good luck
A LOT of material. Print out her posted lecture notes and annotate them during lecture to be efficient. Lecture gives all the info you need, it's your job to memorize/review/practice. Textbook is optional, but I HIGHLY recommend doing AND understanding the textbook practice problems suggested in the syllabus. This applies to 118B w/ Nasiri as well.
Lectures were not helpful and I ended up learning the concepts through youtube videos. TAs didn't know the material she was teaching in class and had no idea what we were going to be graded on until after the midterms/finals. There were few practice problems, and the solutions for such were often wrong. Such a confusing class.
Avoid if you can. Horrible lectures. Notes and explanations are bad, has accent, and messes up during explanations and when students ask for clarification. Learned nothing from her. Might as well not go to lecture, learned everything on my own. No homework or reinforcement of topics. Grade based completely on tests. 100% self study class.
Shes a nice enough person, but I cannot believe that I paid thousands of dollars just to teach myself all of the material. Her lectures are incomprehensible and her exams are so difficult that a TA actually APOLOGIZED to us. She wont even teach some concepts (ex: synthesis) but expects us to know it perfectly for exams. Avoid if possible.
Worst professor/teacher ever had. Made up own rules about ochem, unclear lectures, no supplementary materials provided, contradicts herself, chooses bad examples, impossibly hard tests, crammed insane amount of material into last two weeks. My TA was great which was only thing that made this class pass-able. Under no circumstance take her ever.
She ignores any covid protocol or the well being of her students
She does not care about the students's well being at all. The school is shut down for COVID (due to high cases) and she decides it's a good idea to risk safety by mandating labs in person the day before students start lab (instead of a week at least in advance). There are students in this class who tested positive for COVID. Never again.
Definitely, the worst professor on campus. Gives out unreasonable amounts of homework, tests don't even relate to what was taught in class. Even asked students to take in-person labs during a pandemic when there were several hundred positive cases on campus.
Organic chemistry is already a hard subject, but then you have an instructor like Nasiri who makes it even more unenjoyable and complicated. Lectures are impossible to follow and are very dense. Very disorganized overall. The only saving grace is the lovely Head TA but even he can only do so much. She also mandated in-person Lab during a pandemic.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible in her lectures and general regard for her students. Do not take.
At the height of COVID, she decided to make labs in person and gave everyone a one-day notice. It really didn't seem like she took into consideration students' situations who had COVID, were ill, disabled, or even out of town. She also has a heavy accent which makes it hard to understand her.
Not only was Nasiri unsafe starting in person labs when Davis' covid rate was at its highest, she has horrible communication skills & has no sympathy towards her students. Some of her students got less than a 24-hour warning that they had to come to lab. This means they had to return to Davis AND procure everything for lab in less than 24 hours!!!
No one can understand her with the way she speaks. She does not describe the concepts well in her lecturespeople have to self-study. She tried to force people into going back in-person for lab when she knew their were personal circumstances that makes it difficult for people during the pandemic. Would not recommend as a professor.
literally the worst professor I have ever had. You don't learn anything during lecture so you have to teach yourself everything. She also messes up on her own lectures as there are mistakes in her own lecture notes. Avoid taking her at all costs!
If you can, get out, and avoid taking her. Trust me, she is horrible
Worst class I've ever taken. I studied so hard in 118C and still failed. Eventually passed but never scored above a C+ in the 118 series with Nasiri. Tests are ridiculously difficult and she provides almost no practice. Labs are tedious and useless. Go to Mariya's AATC workshops and do her worksheets if you want a chance to pass this class.
I've taken all 3 quarters of the 118 series with Nasiri, and hands down she is the worst professor I've ever had. She may be a sweet lady, but she is so distanced from her students. Even with the curve, it is almost impossible to get an A. Props to 118C Head TA Supreeth Prasad because he actually cared about us & clearly knows what he's doing.
she is literally the worst professor ever. no consideration for students during a pandemic lectures and notes are full of mistakes so its hard to follow along i feel so bad for her tas who have been wonderful accommodating and so caring towards students because she really does not care whether you are learning or not
This is the worst instructor I have ever taken to date. Absolutely terrible lectures. Does not care about the students' success in the slightest. Unfair grading too with stuck up TA's. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Literally so bad I wanna give her a zero, but that's not possible so I give her a 1. The head TA was more helpful than she ever was because she does not make any sense whatsoever. Avoid her at all costs. Save your sanity and take chem with another professor or at a community college because you'll be teaching yourself the entire quarter.
She might be the worst professor ive had in davis. shes so confusing and her outlines make no sense. she says obviously you should know this but how am i supposed to know anything when she doesnt teach? avoid at all costs the only reason anyone understands what is going on is because of the head ta dupree the
I would avoid her at all costs. I stopped going to lectures because I learn the same material in a clearer fashion from the head TA and the CHE8B workshop. Everything she says goes right over my head and she is so distant from her students. She is nice but that doesn't excuse her terrible teaching.
Simply do not understand anyone who could give her a good review. She failed 1/3 students when I took this class and was an awful teacher. Do whatever possible to avoid taking her even if you have to take summer classes/waitlist. If you have her for A be prepared to work so much harder in B to just catch up to everyone else.
She's a nice lady, but every time I take the exams I wish every breath is my last. Her lectures are awful and very disorganized, she cares little about her students and is very distant, never showed up on exam dates. I learned more from our TA than her. Absolutely horrible, do NOT consider her (I have to take her because I had no choice).
nasiri was incoherent and i literally could not understand what she was saying during lectures. supreeth being the head ta was a godsend, without his help during office hours and problem sessions i would be so incredibly lost. labs and problem sets help boost your grade, highly recommend to do them well! :)
what was that final ... class was structured with 5 quizzes spread out along with a final worth 35% of your grade (MC HEAVY with many students getting F averages on it) didn't really pay attention to her lectures because they didn't help at all. head TA mainly did all the explaining on top of lectures. just very glad it's over to say the least
Awful lecturer, barely even wrote on her printed chapter outlines, which makes it difficult to learn the content. Not very receptive to what the students want, even with the changing guidelines of winter quarter 22. Didn't show up to any of the exams. Worse class I've ever taken. Head TA saved the class but it was absolutely not worth the misery.
High expectations, expect to teach yourself. I learned everything from YouTube. Her lectures are impossible to follow and often she skips pages or makes mistakes on example problems. The head TA was the only reason I passed. Quizzes every two weeks are unlike practice problems or practice quizzes. Requires a TON of outside resources. Go to AATC!
She is a kind and gentle woman, always explains every detail and easy to understand. The only horrible thing is her accent (not discrimination but only in my point of view).
I never quite understood Nasiri's class or teaching style. She teaches something in class, but it is something completely different on the exam. When I had her for 118B, the C was at 39%. If you want to succeed in this class, instead of relying on her lectures, use the book and do as many problems as possible. Also, avoid if you can.
Your only hope is having a TA that is empathetic with how incredibly difficult the class is. Had her for A and set me significantly behind for B. Only nice thing was a massive curve (48% was C-) because her tests are impossible. Makes up own rules about chem, lectures are useless, gives no practice whatsoever, trust me avoid her at all costs.
Goes on long tangents about her personal life or the joys of organic chem. Lectures are borderline useless except that's where she announces her variations on chem that are incorrect but on the tests so you have to go or hear from someone else. Gave no practice material whatsoever, found out it's because she reuses all old exams. DO NOT TAKE HER
When I put the tag hilarious, I mean she is a joke of a teacher. Honestly baffles me that she hasn't been fired. she is the epitome of everything that there is not to like in the world. tough to understand doesn't teach. It feels like she earned her degree using chegg and knows nothing about the topic. Do NOT choose her classes if you have a choice
This professor was really difficult to learn from/understand. Most people ended up not going to lecture/not watching recording of lectures and just used textbook to study from. 2 midterms and a final, and apparently not curved. HW was rough due to potential errors from third party website. Overall, this 2 unit class seemed like a 8 unit courseload
It's insane how she's still a professor. She doesn't clearly explain topics, has horrible lectures, and has extremely challenging exams. I had a decent grade for both midterms, despite not attending lectures and solely relying on self-study and head TAs review sessions/office hours. Going to lectures is a waste of time.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. This class is only 2 units but I spent more time working on this class than any other STEM course I've taken here. I'd give her a 0 if I could, her lectures were useless.
The first time I felt compelled to write a review ever. She does not elaborate during lecture and is very hard to understand. She had an unfair first midterm. I had to teach myself and go to the library A LOT. Take chem with her if you want to un a live yourself.
Do not take her class if you can help it. Be prepared to teach yourself everything since her lectures were extremely unhelpful. The class averages on midterms and the final were very low and many people were worried about failing. She really dosen't seem to care if her students pass or fail.
Ochem is not an easy class and personally I feel as though Dr Nasiri did a pretty good job explaining the concepts despite that fact. Definitely recommend coming to lecture, even if they are recorded, I know that those who attended tended to do much better in the class. Stay on top of lecture content and study the practice exams well.
Dr. Nasiri is sweet, but please do yourself a favor and avoid her classes. You will be teaching yourself this material, and if that's not something you're ready to do, pick a different prof. Exams are not structured well, with little chance for partial credit, which makes it pretty easy to fail them. Lectures are fairly useless as well.
Expect to learn everything by yourself, because her lectures are borderline incomprehensible. Exams are much more conceptual than the homework and are graded harshly. Avoid this professor at all costs - exam averages are generally below 50%, and she doesn't care to reassess her teaching style or hold review sessions. Nice lady but horrible teacher.
Avoid if you can. Lectures are almost incomprehensible and hold very little educational value. The homework and exam material only kind of align, and both require heavy self-teaching. Even her TAs are frustrated with her; she's a nice lady, but terrible professor. She also doesn't record lectures & hates using any sort of technology.
I think she is very sweet, but as a professor, I do not understand her. She was not accommodating to her students as she did not record her lectures and attendance was mandatory. Test, homework, and lecture all felt different. Very very tough tests and it just felt unfair. If you have to take the class, READ the book and tutoring. Good luck.
She is a very nice person, but as a teacher, one of the most disconnected teachers at UCDAVIS. Her accent is to the point where you must skip lecture to watch the online recorded lectures with subtitles, and even the lectures dont help. If you have to take nasiri, dont go to lecture. study textbook, and do homework problems. STUDY A LOT!!!!
Very tough exams
The worst professor on this planet. Terrible at teaching, frequently makes mistakes on her own tests, is unfair, and reuses material. 0/10 would recommend. Not vibes.
I've never written a review for a teacher before but I felt obligated to write one for future students. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I can't believe that an institution like this would continue on keeping her, no matter how much students hate her. She will not teach anything and good luck on the tests being one of the toughest tests you'll ever take.
Absolutely avoid at all costs. When the avg on the exam was 20% she said "I'm not just gonna curve because you all are doing terrible." What kind of teacher says that? Grade avg is a reflection on the professor, not the students. Got above avg on all exams and still got a C- (lab grade was all A's). Even the dept is looking for a reason to fire her
Everything said by everyone before me is true and worse..
I'm usually demotivated by chem bc I struggle with it. However, Nasiri took the little motivation I had left to perform well and DESTROYED IT. It's one thing to struggle with a subject, but adding a bad lecturer to the mix makes it frustrating. This class is not impossible, u will just need to selfstudy for 10 weeks and be sadder than usual :(
Nasiri's class is extremely unprofessional and disorganized. Her lecture slides have spelling errors all over them and she has made several errors on exams.
Worst professor at UCD. The lectures are disorganized and have lots of errors. She does not provide any accurate practice exams and her exams are much more difficult than other professors. Avoid her if possible.
Lectures are not helpful. Studying on your own and watching AATC workshops is a better use of your time. Study everything, even the most obscure topics if you want to do really well. I have no words, just no.
just save yourself the trouble and avoid this class. the lectures are disorganized and really confusing, very dense, and so confusing that its hard to get anything out of them. the only success i had in learning any of the material was through youtube videos and some of the text book.
WORST prof ive had at ucd.extremely disorganized and incomprehensible lectures. u cannot learn anything from lecture alone, tbh you'll retain nothing from lec- get ready to spend hrs pouring over the textbook, aatc resources, and third party workshts/textbk qs to even have a chance at a decent grade. i'd give her a 0 but i can't so i give her a 1.
The worst professor I have ever had in my life. Lectures were close to useless, but is required because of rules she imposes on certain things she teaches. Very heavy accent that makes it impossible to decipher what she is explaining and teaching. Barely any practice provided for the midterms. If possible, avoid her.
Do not take this professor. Her lectures are not clear whatsoever. The testing material barely matched what we learned in the lecture, and/or they were much more difficult than the lecture. She was kind, but her teaching was awful. She pre-set a curve and between 1/3 and 2/3 of the class failed.
Nasiri is very sweet and cares for her students, but she isn't the best professor. Her lectures are very dense, and often doesn't make sense if you haven't prepared beforehand. Unless you absorb info like a sponge, you'll need supplemental resources. Make a study group to go over the concepts and join the discord server for additional help.
Nasiri is a nice lady, but a very bad professor. You can still succeed in the class if you just go to the AATC workshops to learn the material. Don't just rely on the lecturers to learn info because you won't learn everything that will show up on tests. Midterms 20%, quizzes 20%, and final 40% of grade.
Such an awesome professor, she was so concise in every lecture. The midterms and finals were stupid easy as well. Whoever says they are hard is gaslighting you or just not smart. I think everyone will get an A++++++++++ if they take this class asap.
Avoid. Nasiri provided no practice material in the correct format for MT 2 and final. No homework. No helpful materials posted. TAs/Head TA made many mistakes. Grade only based off exams/quizzes. Lecture slides had mistakes in them. Unclear what was wanted from us. Exams did not fully reflect material taught. Must teach yourself everything to pass.
Best way to study is watch videos after lecture on the topics discusses, do practice problems from textbook, and go to AATC for help. Difficult to understand certain words she says due to her accent, is not tech savvy, but she is passionate about chemistry, which can help you to pay attention more in lecture.
Course is graded by quizzes and midterms/final only. The midterms and final were difficult, but fair. It can be hard to understand her during lecture with her accent and jumbled lecture slides, so watching the co-class is a must. Also do any practice you can - textbook problems, practice tests, etc. You must be able to self-teach.
Pretty much just have to teach yourself with her as professor. Her lecture style makes it hard to absorb info, she pretty much just points at a paper & barely explains what's on it. Doing tons of practice problems from the discussion manual & worksheets on Canvas will save you. Midterms aren't completely unreasonable, but the final was very hard.
I was able to get an A by spending 1-3 hours a day reviewing from lecture and looking for practice problems online (never used the txtbook or went to office hrs). AATC resources are your friend, and so is the Ochem discord. Get all the practice you can, especially previous exams which are similar. She changes the curve based on class performance
Avoid taking at all costs. I was getting better quiz grades watching youtube review videos the day before a quiz than studying 2 hours a day via class notes and doing lab manual practice probs. TAs often made mistakes and taught incorrectly and the lab manual practice problems often had the wrong answers in key.
Never went to her lecture but I did watch the recording on 2X speed just to make sure what she wants for specific details (which might be different than what the TAs tells you and the lab manual). This class can be VERY confusing if you don't know what's going on. I would study ahead or do previews of whatever material is being taught.
As a person? Nasiri isn't terrible. As a teacher? She finds a way to run laps around a point while never getting to it. I only took her because she was the only one available, even after being put on probation. Her lectures were more or less pointless. TAs helped. Overall, just a terrible experience. She shouldn't be allowed to teach anymore.
The class is pretty disorganized so the lectures are hard to follow. You mostly have to learn content outside of lecture and it will take a while.
Professor is a good person, but I cannot understand her lectures. Her homework is too heavy especially with not enough time(over 40 questions per assignment). In addition, her lectures don't really help as she only goes over a small fraction of the chapter.
Nasiri is a really sweet lady but she does not know how to teach. She puts up paper lecture slides and talks for the whole 2 hour lecture, she rarely does practice problems and its very difficult to know what she is saying with her accent. Her test averages were extremely low and a passing B was like a 50%. Her head TA isnt the nicest either.
A phenomenal gem of a professor. A colleague and I received high A's and did minimal work. Tutoring was not an option since lectures were easily comprehensible and straightforward. If your brain is the size of a normal human brain, you will be fine.
She knows what she's talking about in lectures although she didn't have a ppt. She mainly just uses printed notes and writes on that. She is very detailed about the concepts and everything you need to know for the exams. The only thing is her accent, if you are struggling with that I suggest you just watch her recording at 1.5X speed, that HELPED.
Due date always change... No clear instructions about the lab format.
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures are incomprehensible and 90% of the info you need is only in the textbook. Makes you memorize all IR and NMR values just for like one question on the final. I got a B by reading the textbook and griding practice problems like my life depended on it. 100% avoid. I'm learning so much more in 118B.
Probably like many older professors, probably nice person, definitely not so nice teacher. No lecture slides, just writes on a piece of paper. Really hard to understand, you leave the classroom discouraged and wondering if you even gained one piece of knowledge from 1.5 hours. Its depressing to even think about.
You will not learn a single thing from Nasiri. She goes on tangents during lecture and doesn't write down mechanisms, synthesis, etc. Learned everything from the TAs. Made our midterm 2 and final multiple choice which is impossible. Save your sanity and do not take her. She gave me a total of 25 breakdowns during the quarter.
She's a lovely human. Bad professor. Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
avoid avoid avoid.
Class averages were consistently in the 30s-40s, that is NOT normal. Worst prof I've ever had
Nasiri is not the worst professor I've ever had, but if you are taking this class PLEASE use the workshops that Davis provides. There is so much useful information in it, and you can fully forego going to lectures and just learn from the workshops instead. Nasiri's lectures are thoroughly hard to absorb any information from. Try to avoid.
Before you agree with the comment saying it is the students' fault, keep in mind that over half the class received a failing grade. Meaning if you passed, you likely got a C or a B. This class is a prereq where you have to understand concepts, yet you feel like you retain nothing. Take anyone else. Great person, but that's not enough.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt, I took her for 118A and B but she was horrible. This is a self-taught course. Expect to learn nothing in class. You will put in your all and receive scraps in return. TAs and campus tutoring will help you tremendously. The course itself is manageable but the professor makes it impossible.
Yes ochem is a hard subject, but I took this class with Helix for three weeks before i dropped and he was SO much better. if you have no other choice than to take her class, get a private tutor and/or use aatc Mariya Jones's resources. Use her old practice tests to study for midterms
One of the worst classes I have taken. Homework would take hours to complete and lectures were useless. It's hard to follow lectures and better to watch youtube videos to learn yourself. Exams were brutal and at the end barely any curve was given.
Be ready to review the textbook when you get back from learning sO mUcH from lecture. Overall, class was fine, she is just a tough grader and her TA's even more so. The lab portion is meticulously graded and you must follow each and every direction or you will just get a zero. Would not recommend especially for students who work.
Klein's Organic Chemistry as a Second Language + amazing TA carried me. Nasiri isn't that bad, but only if you familiarize yourself with the topics ahead of time. Exams are brutally conceptual; expect precise arrow-counting, ranking nucleophilicity of nonsense molecules, and at least a few unfair questions requiring knowledge she never taught.
Very hard
Her lectures are terrible and all over the place. I didn't learn anything until the day before the final exam which is worth 40% of your grade and is way harder than anything else done in the class. The lab portion itself is fine since its led by a TA.
Nasiri was a terrible professor. I took her after having a great experience for 118A with Lievens in Winte. her lectures are poorly organized, she projects papers instead of slides and they tend to have typos and can be misleading. Lectures are hard to understand and most of the grade is from the midterms and final. Class averages extremely low.
As a person, Nasiri's nice. Though I do believe that taking a class in hieroglyphics will help you in deciphering her notes. I did better on the exams after deciding to use the 8am lecture time to sleep in to escape the harsh reality of taking this class. Thankfully the TAs had mercy on us and gave out encouragement points.
reposting this bc my last one got taken down but she needs to be put on probation again
Do not take her. actually the worst, will write notes and cross it all out because its wrong.Handwriting shaky, notes impossible to decipher. Both midterms graded wrong and after submitting corrections more than 10 points back on each one.the answer key should not be wrong every time.told us if we submit corrections we would get points taken away.
The utter incompetance of this professor and her ta's are insane. Both midterms were written very poorly and nothing like the exams given previous years. On top of that the answer key is so wrong every midterm you get back more than 10 points your orginal score through regrades. How the answer key is made so inaccurately every time is beyond me
dont take nasiri completely taught myself everything out of the textbook + AATC resources also midterm keys always have some sort of mistake so it takes like two weeks for your exam grades to be properly posted :3
While she has an accent, her lectures are extremely disorganized. She constantly goes on tangents barely connected to the material. There were various errors in midterm answer keys, resulting in multiple regrades. None of the weekly discussion quizzes get dropped. There's a set curve. I used the textbook and went to the other professor's lectures.
I just wish that she would retire. She's the worst professor I have had and it shows how much tenure protects bad teachers when she's had YEARS of bad reviews/complaints/a probationary period and the administration does nothing. Lectures are useless, tests hard, and some of her content is just wrong and it makes going into 118B awful.
Nice Person. Everything else is hell. Disorganized lectures. Her accents and mumbling don't help. Grading is ridiculous . She clearly doesn't know how to lecture or grade a class. Forced to memorize everything while other prof. allow notecards. Exams include the most random compounds. Youtube and AATC workshops are your only chance.
She a tenured professor but still on probation for failing over 50% of her students even after curve. All she did after was increase curve so she just trying to hide her inability to lecture. The way she lectures and grade is tough on students. Her course forces you to utilize other resources like youtube and AATC so you do have a chance.
If you are a premed student and are thinking of taking Nasiri for O chem, your GPA WILL take a hit. Past students of Nasiri who liked her said they finished with a B aka a 3.0. Mind you that is students that liked her and that grade is after her hefty curve which is mainly there to hide that fact that she previously failed over 50% of her students.
Nasiri is a very kind person who likes her students but is a very poor professor. She makes a lot of mistakes on examples and the exam keys are always wrong so exams need to be fixed constantly. Slides are unorganized and you need to teach yourself all the material. Good luck.
nasiri is a nice lady who cares about her students but her lectures were terrible and disorganized. she made many mistakes on examples and had to back track often. exams had so many errors on the answer key but that's bc the head TA made it, so i wouldn't blame the prof for it. please retire and relax nasiri!!!
Would not recommend, I had to learn almost everything off co-course or other online material even while attending lectures. She uses a preset curve and the midterms are more difficult than the practice tests, sometimes having problems that weren't on it and glossed over in lecture. Always ask for more points on regrades, there are often errors.
Dr. Nasiri genuinely wants the best for her students. The best now is retirement. She offers less than the textbook, while making 5-10 written or verbal mistakes/lecture. Use Co-class, textbook, and/or YouTube before going to lecture. Nasiri cannot be the first way you learn ochem or you'll discourage yourself and likely not catch her mistakes too.
listen to all the bad reviews. Do not take her!
Nasiri is the worst professor I have ever had. Her accent is so thick and she is so hard to understand. The exams are difficult. If you can avoid her, please stay away.
I would have selected 0 if I could have. It is an embarrassment that this horrible, useless professor can have a job at one of the best STEM institutions in the country and that this is what our tuition money goes towards. This professor added nothing to my learning process and made learning organic chemistry nearly unbearable.
AWFUL! Lectures are unorganized, unclear, & are filled with errors. MTs were fair if you teach yourself but also had lots of errors. Final was NOTHING like the MTs. Refused to give partial credit on final or lower cutoffs even when the test avg. was a 50% when it was her fault. Only graded on tests! TAs are inconsistent. BEWARE! WILL RUIN YOUR GPA!
WORST professor ever. Lectures were disorganized, boring, and unengaging. Her handwriting is terrible so it's hard to understand what she's writing. Both midterms had errors in the answer key so our scores kept on changing. Even the final had errors, but the regrade session was unfair because it was only during a certain time DURING FINALS WEEK.
She wants the best for her kids, but she doesn't realize that the best thing for us would be her retirement. Weekly quizzes are okay but the midterms and finals are crazy and the class curve doesn't help. Our final average was 50% and it was 40% of our grade. Her only consistently good reviews are from back in 1962 when she wasn't tenured yet
got an A in mascal 118a (no cheat sheet) and A- in lievens (notecard). prob getting a C in Nasiri despite studying the same amt as the other 2 classes. lectures clear & informative; she makes it harder bc she doesn't give cheat sheets for how much material we have to learn. my 1st non A & i passed physics fine... shows how tough this class is.
I can handle unorganized lectures, but not messy grading. Midterms were regraded multiple times, often because the answer key was wrong. For the final, I wrote the right answers but was marked wrong (got back 9 points). I'm still pretty sure the answer key had errors. Students should be graded accurately and not forced to check the work of the TAs.
Kind old lady who has no business being a professor. Midterms were reasonable assuming you put in time to understand content. Final tanked my grade. Lots of incompetency in terms of grading from the TAs but also lots of pity points from quizzes. Don't waste time with her incomprehensible lectures and be prepared to teach yourself the entire course
kind lady but an awful professor. Lectures were useless and made no sense half the time. Many mistakes on the key for the midterms and poor questions. Get ready to read the textbook and watch videos because that is the only way you will comprehend the material. Weekly quizzes in discussion were fairly easy. Overall avoid taking her if u can.
She needs to be put on probation again. Absolute joke of a professor for a class thats already difficult. Doesn't allow notecards (other professors do) and her final was an absolute curveball. Cherry picked topics that either did not show up in lecture or was briefly covered. No exaggeration, there wasn't a single MAJOR topic on this years exam.
Nasiri is a horrible teacher. Disorganized lectures, hard to understand. Your only hope is to learn the content elsewhere. Her exams vary, some midterms were easy if you studied, but both finals (118B and C) were impossible. Expect averages in the 30s, 40s. Avoid her if you can. She is a nice person, but she should no longer have a job at Davis.
This is the only class I've taken where a majority of students have to use a different professor(AATC Mariya Jones) entirely to learn the content that Nasiri is supposed to teach. Exams do NOT test the concepts you learn. Instead, you get some reaction that was one line out of 30 pages of notes. About half the class fails. Student's fault?
Your grade is determined by discussion quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. Her lectures and confusing and unhelpful. The midterms were hard but doable assuming you studied for hours weekly outside of class. The final was extremely difficult. Every test was regraded multiple times, often still with errors. The class has a set curve. Final avg was 50%
If you want to succeed in this class, you need to self-teach yourself all of the material using AATC resources and other videos. Be prepared to spend hours on videos, grind practice problems, and still be bamboozled by some exam questions. Grading was also full of mistakes.
One cannot understate how many things were wrong with Dr. Nasiri's class. The way that she pronounces words makes it pretty difficult to understand her in lecture. Furthermore, she makes a lot of mistakes in lecture as well as in the keys for midterms. She also only gives practice exams that are from 20+ years ago. Avoid her at all costs!
Honestly, Nasiri just needs a break. She's a sweet old woman who does not deserve all the hate she gets, until you get to exam season. The final is worth 40% of your grade and is mostly content from the very last lecture, it dropped my grade from an A to a B. Avoid if you can, but she's not nearly as bad if you work hard and keep an open mind.
Lectures are confusing and extremely difficult to follow. You will have to self teach yourself the majority of the content. She is a sweet old woman but the class is hard to tolerate. Exams are extremely unforgiving and she gives no expectations whatsoever as to the structure of the exam. This class is a rough time.
Honestly, idk how UC Davis keeps her around. She maybe is well meaning, but her class is set up for you to pass but it is so difficult to get above a B+. Idk if she understands the way she makes her tests and the cutoffs are GPA killers. Also, her lectures are really unclear. Ochem is hard, but she genuinely is a terrible professor.
As someone who got A's with her reasonably: 1. Utilize outside resources (AATC tutors, Mariya) 2. Try your best to attend/watch lectures 3. You MUST do practice problems outside of class 4. Work to UNDERSTAND patterns and relationships (incl. from gen chem), only SUPPLEMENT with memorization 5. You can do it. !!! (It helps if you love chemistry)
A very kind person but an unfortunately ineffective teacher. As others have said, expect to teach yourself most of the material. AATC and Mariya are a godsend; far more effective than actual lectures. May also stick to some teachings despite literature to the contrary. Afaik Lievens, Helix, or Beal will give you a better experience.
For the love of GOD, please retire.
Please dont take her if you can help it. If you do, rely on AATC, the TA's and the internet to help you cuz nasiri herself will be of little to no help. Going to lectures is pointless, but I wouldn't suggest skipping them if you can help it. Her grade cutoffs are low though so if youre willing to put in the work, you can get an easy A.
AWFUL PROFESSOR. I'm shocked her rating is so high. She doesn't teach. She is very difficult to understand. Going to lectures is pretty much useless. Only reason I passed was putting in the extra hours watching AATC videos to learn what I should've been taught and going to AATC tutoring hours. An awful representation of UC Davis.
I got an A for 118B and C with her, so it IS doable. Her grade cutoffs are fairly low. That being said, I had to teach myself EVERYTHING, relied heavy on AATC / Youtube. It made no difference in my grade to watch her lectures, and I didn't for a majority of the series - this should say a LOT about her actual teaching. UCD, get better profs please.
Horrible teacher. I say this as a fact, not an opinion. Nasiri's lectures are incredibly uninformative and misleading. I have not gone to one lecture of hers where I didn't come out more confused than before. She will show the each chapter's basics without demonstrating how this knowledge will be used or what exam questions will actually look like.
TAKE PROF. HELIX!! I don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned this but her accent is very thick and it's hard to understand her(especially with new terms). Don't take her! Nasiri, it is time to retire
do not take.
One course a day, keep your GPA away
The grading is insane. average 43% on the quiz and there's no curve. Her lectures are tortures
If I could give a negative score I would. Absolutely HORRIFIC. She tells us to study harder, when her average was 43%!!!!!!! Was on academic probation, why is she still allowed to teach? Am I right?! Literally would rather get behind than take her class. Prob 2/3 gonna fail. Pray for me!
I read the reviews before taking her class and she's somehow still worse than I expected. Do not take a class with Nasiri. There's typos and mistakes in lectures and on quizzes. Her class is very difficult to follow. I don't get enough information in lectures and rely heavily on AATC and self-teaching. Do not take her.
Nasiri needs to retire. To be honest, I can't understand a word she says. Her lecture style is completely unorganized and she does not even get close to properly explaining the mechanisms and reactions that are NECESSARY to know for the exams. Midterms dubbed "quizzes" every 2 weeks and the latest class averages were 43% and 55%. Give me a break.
This profesor was the absolute worse. Her lectures are 95% trying to understand her and 5% trying to understand the material, so you end up not understanding anything. Her tests are nothing like the practice exams nor her PowerPoints. If for some crazy reason you decide to take her, do Mariya workshops and study on your own. Good luck.
This is absolutely the worst class Ive ever taken in my life. I knew before taking her that she was bad but she is still worse than i expected. Her lectures are useless she doesnt explain anything, I have to teach myself everything & rely on AATC. The class is so unorganized and quizzes are insanely hard and she doesnt curve or give partial credit!
Don't like that people are citing her accent as a reason why she's bad, because that's not something she can control & even if she didn't have an accent, I would still rate her a 1. But do what you can to avoid a class with her. Lecture notes are borderline incomprehensible, tests are insanely hard & despite having 5 of them, she doesn't drop any.
The warnings are not a joke- STAY AWAY. Easily the most condescending professor I've ever had with a tendency to blame low quiz averages on her students instead of realizing no one can understand her. She will find every reason to claim students aren't trying hard enough and will not budge on her harsh grading scheme no matter what.
worst professor I have ever encountered in my entire life. similar to other reviews, I knew what to expect going into her class but it was somehow way worse than I imagined. embarrassing that UC Davis allows professors like these to continue teaching. avoid taking her to preserve your GPA and take ochem with literally any other professor
Nasiri is a nice person, but taking her class is NEVER worth it. Going to lecture is pointless and you will spend the majority of your time learning the material yourself. Ochem is an interesting subject but she makes it unbearable and 10x harder than it needs to be.
Run!!!, There are 5 quizzes, and the average is from 30% to 60% with no curve and no drop lowest grade. I always got 20% higher than average, but I am still in the C range. We can only self-study, the only helpful thing is her lecture slides, but there are some mistakes.
Absolutely the worst class I have taken at Davis. Nasiri is not receptible to feedback, extremely hard to understand, lectures are unorganized, & quizzes don't reflect the material taught. So many errors in lectures and keys. The grade averages are extremely low. The students are petitioning against her. Get ready to teach yourself or do NOT take.
She told us it's not her fault some students are slower than others. Class avg on one of the quizzes was a 12/34 & the others were not much better, ~40-50%. Get ready to go to AATC & read the textbook to even have a chance of passing with HOURS of studying. Avoid her... PLEASE. She's impossible. Listen to the other poor reviews and save your sanity
I took CHE129B while taking CHE128B and would say that the classes should definitely not be taken at the same time, especially if you are taking it with Nasiri. The labs require us to understand material that doesn't get taught in lecture until weeks later. The TA I had was also unnecessarily hard on grading. Definitely avoid Nasiri if you can!!!!!
Nasiri wasn't bad at lecturing and I was able to learn by watching her lectures and reading some textbook, however, I felt that the material that would be recommended to practice before the exams led me to be overly prepared for topics that wouldn't even end up on the exam, despite them showing up multiple times on practice material.
Nasiri is a good human being but her teaching methods are not great. Heres what you to do if you get her: 1) Memorize her lecture notes. These are key for her tests. 2) GO TO THE AATC. They are of great help and some have had her before. 3) Go to TA office hours for extra questions. She tends to go off topic at her office hours. Good luck!
Terrible lecturer. Does not know how to use Canvas. Unclear on expectations. Five midterms that are all extremely more difficult than homework and practice exams. Made the already difficult material even more complicated.
i don't know why she's a professor, AVOID her and save your sanity, GPA, and energy. It's not worth it
Very good listener, clear instruction, easy grader and midterms
the most infamous professor at uc davis. say her name out loud and every student within a 100 foot radius will go into fight or flight.
