hh god sooo much work. Not helpful. HArd tests!DONT TAKE HER
HARD TESTS. VERY BORING.
Easiest class Ive ever had! I am far from a philosopher, but I got an A in her class just by showing up to most of the lectures and handing in 4, 2-page papers. No tests or quizzes, she is so nice!
easy marker... and don't have finial exam .... u just have to do all the assignment and easy to get higher mark!
Very nice teacher, pretty easy class as long as you do all of the assignments.
Nice teacher, the class is easy if you do the work.
She is a really great lady, but needs some fine tuning in her teaching skills. She is at times not too clear, and her examples can at times be confusing. But good teaching skills come with time. She really is a great person, and very smart.
Wonderful professor =)
a real scatter-brain, often impossible to follow, but she is a good natured woman; makes for a teacher who marks very vaguely, however generously. show up, and its almost impossible to get less then a c+
If you follow her instructions, participate and show effort in your work, you will easily get an A. Participation and attendance is important to her. She is not difficult, but the material can be very dry and difficult, so pay attention to her lectures.
do all of the assignment , go to class . u will pass easily!!~~ and her mid term are very easy too!!
Took way too much LSD in college. She is incredibly scatter-brained and spacy. Really boring class. Exams are okay.
An absolute angel. Awesome professor.
Melinda is super nice and a good marker, but she needs to brush up on her teaching skills. Overall, I liked her.
This lady's great. She is very patient explaininglogic to me.
She is a very kind teacher, and If you keep on working on the assignments given by her and make sure that you understand them then you will definitely do well in all her exams and can get a staright A grade. Its an easy class. Dont worry!
This class was not easy for me, especially the second half. Melinda's explainations always were better than the books and she uses funny examples. I enjoyed the class even though there was quite a bit of work involved.
very good teacher, very nice and clear and helpful..jus work hard n u can do well
I would reccomend her becuz she is much better than other professors and her exams are easier than her homeworks and If you are a smart student then her class will be a piece of cake for you. Overall she was a nice and a helpful lady.
You can tell she cares about what she is teaching. Makes you think. Medium easiness.
Shes cool, i enjoy her class, hmw isn't to bad, and she is kinda scattered a bit but in philosophy u can't really be strait forward anyway. like i don't do the readings & i get like 16/20 on my hmw.. so no worries. i'd definetly recommend her. tho it can get a lil' boring.. but muh what class isn't?
Everything on tests is carefully covered in class, so if you show up and pay attention, it's easy to get a good grade. She's incredibly nice and explains everything clearly, while encouraging lots of discussion.
Love her classes
Super nice and patient teacher. Explains things to the best of her ability. She's also very considerate.
Her lectures are focusing on students opinions. She likes to listen others, and she gives good marks on exams.
melinda is an awsome teacher. she is kind, dedicated and helpful prof.her assignments aren't hard to do well on if u put the work and effort into it. class can be confusing sometimes but if u go see melinda during office hours she is always willing help explain things better for you.
The material is extremely difficult to read, very dry. The lectures can be very boring, and she can be unclear and confusing, but she's a god teacher. She'll answer any and all questions, and let people join in with their own opinions. Contribution and effort are every important to her.
Hogan is a great teacher, she tries her best to explain the concepts... The material itself may be confusing, but overall I reccomend hogan's class, if your a student who trys, reads text, and comes to class.
Amazing teacher, speaks very slowly, which may annoy you at first but it is very helpful when following philosophical arguments. Very fair marker, easy tests, really nice person, knows her stuff. Always tries to answer questions posed in class, but sometimes answers a different question if the question wasn't clear;I think that's the only bad thing
Overall good prof. She knows what she's talking about and is always available outside of class.I recommend her.
Great PHIL professor! She made the course material very intereting. She's certainly an easy, fair marker. If you put decent amount of work in this course, I don't see why you won't succeed in it. I'd highly recommand all of you to take her PHIL course! You may possibly be the best PHIL Pro you could get!
Melinda is an absolute bore! I really regret taking this class. She is a easy marker for the first month and then the marking gets really hard. Her assignments suck and her lectures are even worse. She starts a point then stops then stands there with her mouth wide open and then forgets what she was talking about. SERIOUSLY, STAY AWAY FROM HER!
I liked this class. Philosophy is different -- makes you think. Melinda is respectful of students intelligence. She wants you to think and use your own examples, not memorize information. The numbskul below probably received a bad mark.
To be honest with you, i found her class to be quite confusing. She explains everything very diffrently from the book and is willing to help you outside of class according to her time, not yours. I also must say that the lectures are spose to simplfity the book, but in her case the book actully simplifies her lectures a lot better.
Logic is challenging, but Melinda listens to students and explains things at your level. When I started doing the homework I did better. Excellent Prof!
SNOOZEFEST!!! i've had to leave the class just cuz it was so frustratingly boring!!! melinda is an old bitty who lives with cats okay, enough said. do not take any of her courses! i'm not one of those losers who fail her class and complain, i'm getting an A and i hate that class. she's very unhelpful and favours the ppl who don't try
I learned a tremendous amound in this course. Melinda will always help you with assignments during office hours. The short assignments helped with writing the essay. Some topics are really interesting (Certainty) some not as much. Recommended.
I love this teacher. She is extremely nice. Her classes are engaging, discussions in class can be great sometimes and the topics are interesting. And no final exam. I don't know why the earlier bitter comment mentioned cats. I think she said one time her family has a cat.
yes the comment about the book simplifying her lectures..SO TRUE..she's so confusing..just don't listen to her and read the book because she IS SOO CONFUSING..other than that she's a really nice teacher and her tests are SUPER easy..i recommend her just becuz of that..jus try to zone her out in class or don't go at all cuz its a waste of time.
This is the second course I took from her and I will take more. In two terms I only missed one class -- class more useful than the book for me, more in the other classes but even for logic.
Fair workload. 3 tests 2 quizes. She even gives a practice final exam. But the exam had some hard questions.
Really great professor. Melinda's very clear and helpful. She recomends you do exercises from the textbook, but they aren't needed, so there's effectively no homework. I'm not exagerating when I say logic was the easiest college class I've ever taken. One can get a great mark with minimal studying. Also I found logic to be surprisingly interesting.
Amazing Person.. Okay Professor.. She speaks very slowly and often completely incoherently. Sometimes you have to strain to try and understand what she is saying, but once she gets it out, she has some very interesting things to say. Very easy class, 2 tests that took about 20 mins to write, and 2 short essays. Very easy marker. Good Class.
Kicks Azz. You do have to listen carefully though. She'll come back the second week and refute the arguments you gave the previous week one by one until she gets to where she wants to go.
Beware of excessive use of "a rabbit in the room". Very nice lady and was there to help, I just never understood her. She often throws more information than you need so it can be difficult to follow. If you like philosophy, she's probably a good teacher, if not, it's a hard subhect (in general) to understand.
Very concise; uses few words to simplify complex arguments. She's good for students that like philosophy; she's boring for those who don't. Advice: for the paper, look at the suggestions on how to write a philosophy paper on the internet and read the introduction on arguments in the text. EASY: I got an A+. I really liked her and her discussions!
Melinda is very clear about each topic by giving specific examples to refer too! I never liked philosophy but Melinda changed my perspective..it's not so bad! essay 30% midterm 30% and final 30% participation 10% not bad! GPA booster
Yo students, I'm not a book nerd. Infact, I hate books. So believe me, this class easy. Phil is hard but Melinda makes it a stroll in da park. She very helpfull. Stay tuned for the "Rabbit" and get away with an A
best philo teacher ever!! made philo interesting. Not a lot of memorization, mostly your own ideas. GPA BOOSTER!! she rocks!!
Interesting discussions in class; participation counts for marks. One essay and the tests have an essay component (but she gives you the questions ahead). Professor Hogan expects you to write about the philosophers way of thinking.
interesting class for sure, with letters & symbols instead of sentences. very helpful and gives lots of examples in class so u know how to do things. assignments weren't mandatory but u should do some to prepare u for the exams. 3 quizzes and 3 exams thats all she gives. take her class if u want a gpa booster!
Topic is intriguing and Melinda is very good at logic. She is a bit spacey... but that makes the class entertaining in a way!
Teacher is very thorough, clear, and nice. She provides many examples in order for students to understand the material. Tests and quizzes are easy, but doing a bit of the homework (although not mandatory) is of course required to successfully ace the class.
She showed up late ALOT! Thought process was hard to follow, and she got really upset at the calss taking and would freak out. Often would keep the class late due to her showing up late, I found all of this to be so disctracting that I couldnt learn anything. She is a nice person but I dont recomend her to anyone. Maybe I just had a bad class?
I liked it. Those who don't like math find it harder. She gives homework assignments but some people don't do it and then have no idea. Melinda will connect logic to good stories too.
Excellent course. Many ofPlato's dialogues are covered. Professor Hogan gave small tutorials asking us questions on our midterm essays - I wasn't too sure I would like it but I ended up learning ALOT.
Good quality
She's a really good prof and has a quirky sense of humour. She marks easy and she gave more assignments than test. The assignments are easy and it's really easy to get an A in her class. I would recommend taking her class. Just do your readings and not slack off so much.
Great Prof. Gives you 4 questions sets through out the semester. They worth 10% of your overall grade and most of the questions come up in the exam. Very helpful and generous with marking.
Actually took an upper level course with her and it's really good. She is super nice and helpful but the discussion is just so unstructured, it is hard to take notes. She does sometimes gives notes but sometimes not. But she knows the material well and is just a really nice person.
Great teacher. Dont need to buy the textbook bc her outline shows all the articles youll learn about so u can google it.extremley articulate and talks at a great pace so its easy to take notes. Easy going and always willing to help. 2 quizzes(15% each),2 exams (30% each)and 10% participation.BUT U HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY CLASS
She was a great prof. She is also a fairly easy marker. Furthermore, she is very nice and approachable. Highly recommend taking a class with her if you choose to take a philosophy course!
she is nice person, but her class content is disorgnized.
Melinda's class was okay. She tends to be monotone. The class material was dry for the most part. At times she may provide interesting information during lectures, so that's a plus. She prefers if the class engages during discussions. She was lenient in marking. An OKAY prof overall.
Melinda is a really nice teacher! Her lectures are really long though, tough to sit through. The content is kinda heavy. DO NOT TAKE FOR AN EASY A, its not! But shes a decent marker. Tests are decent too. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, no need, just google the info.
NEVER will i take a class again with her! hardest most boring class i took! i saw her ratings she seemed to be the best out there.. NO ! gives you midterm second week worth 30% and then 2 essays worth 30% each and 10% participation.. how do you pass? can't even participate she doesn't know what she's saying herself. most complicated to understand
Great teacher for formal logic. Melinda gives many examples and is very helpful. Homework isn't graded but it's really helpful to do it. Grade made up of 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final. I really enjoyed her class.
Takes YEARS to respond back to emails! Ask her for help and you will receive the opposite of what you asked for. Her lectures are long and boring and is unclear of what she is taking about!
I didn't realize I would like philosophy so much but this turned out to be my best class is term. Intriguing topics were covered, especially towards the end. She handed out a list of study questions for the midterm which really helped. She discussed them with students in her office hours. I will definitely take more philosophy because of her.
One of the most boring class I've ever taken. She is so disorganized with no power points prepared in class and her way of teaching is so confusing. I highly DO NOT recommend.
Very approachable and encouraging instructor but at first I found philosophy hard and abstract. Effort pays off. I learned a lot about debating both sides of an issue and asking deeper questions. One midterm exam, one essay, quz and final exam.
Melinda understands what she teaches very well and does a fine job of explaining concepts to the class. However, she isn't the most engaging prof and a sometimes it can be a chore to sit through a three hour class with her. That being said, she's a decent marker, helps students improve and has a bit of humor. The 90 minute classes are recommended.
She will explain a concept in many ways and she will answer students' questions with care. She encourages group work. It's not hard to get an A if you do the recommended exercises. Only criticism she takes so much time to make sure people understand sometimes she doesn't cover everything planned forthe day, but course covers lots.
Everyone who says that she's a good prof is wrong. Her classes are super boring and long. She just rambles on about a topic and doesn't cover everything. The fact that she doesn't have assignments or homework worth marks and ONLY TESTS is outrageous. No Incentive to do homework, and if you want to know how your doing in class forget emailing her
Provides an outline of what's covered each day. Clearly explains concepts with lots of examples. I did better on the second exam because I did the recommended homework exercises. The practice quizzes helped too. Recommend, but you have to put in effort.
Melinda is a very nice and approachable prof. She really really cares for her students and it shows. She makes sure to go over something as much as possible to make sure you get it. This is my first class with her and i would take her again. I felt that her exams are fair and easy compared to some other profs.
She is the best philosophy that kwantlen has. Her lectures are super easy and interesting. Exams are easy and a good grade can be achieved with a little effort. Never skip a lecture and pay good attention to what se teaches in lectures and you will get a good grade. She gives extra credit too.
Amazing instructor. If you correct her mistake, you get extra marks. Amazing lectures, very nice, teaching style really awesome. Exams are not too hard; if you study well. Always care for the students. Explains everything in an easy way. Overall , 10/10. Will definitely take another class with her if got a chance.
Melinda is a caring professor; though, her classes can be a bit dry at times as she does not use power point. However, her competent level of knowledge regarding philosophy does make up for it. We had 1 midterm, 1 essay, 1 final (each worth 30%) and attendance(10%), so there isn't really any room to mess up. On another note, she is a lenient marker
Excellent Prof
Works through problems in order to teach you from the ground up, instead of reading off slides, which works very well for me, but maybe not for others. But beware, she can fly off the handle. In one of the last classes, she flipped at a student for no reason, and walked out. This was apparently not the first time. Don't let that slide.
Great value. Every week class was was packed. No one wants to miss a lecture because she explains logic so well. I enjoyed this and learned more than I thought I woild. She connects methods of logic with real life strategies.
Her class is pretty heavay, if you ain't good in logic than you will struggle. She is a good person and helps you out during her office hours but her classes are so long and so much information and it gets confusing at some point; she moves very quickly with the material. Gotta study lots to get a good grade!
The only reason she didnt get a 5 is because 3 hours with her talking is LOOOONNNNGGG and boring. She knows her stuff and is the most caring prof Ive ever had. YouTube is better than the textbook for the tests.
Melinda is so sweet and caring. She was very intentional with her students, and gave great feedback to help students excel as much as possible. She gave me a passion for philosophy and was a pretty easy marker at the same time. Recommend for sure !
Prof Melinda is a nice teacher. Lots of readings are required, but most of them are fairly straightforward and short (few pages). As long as you read them all, you would definitely get a good grade. Two tests and few writing assignments are the major marks for grades, and they will be easy if you are well-prepared.
She's a solid prof but you gotta read a lot. The class is online now which I think makes it harder to grasp concepts but she gives out notes that she personally wrote to help people understand. There is a weekly forum that helps all the students communicate and understand things better (it's worth participation marks).
her lectures are amazing. you need to pay attention because all the questions come from stuff she has taught in class. Just keep taking notes and that's all you will need
Interesting topics, friendly and fair. Thorough explanations. It's asynchronous (with two synchronous lectures) so you have to be self motivated. The written forums (participation marks) help. Good course I learned a lot.
Melindas class has many articles to read every week with no lecture videos. Expect to read at least over 100 pages a week of nonsense. If you attend BBB meetings she rambles about irrelevant and off topic information that wastes your time. Also, she's a tough and picky grader, her exams are torturous and making them open book doesn't help at all.
Class organized in a way that really worked for me. She evolves the students' understanding on the topics by looking at the questions from different angles rather than shoving information at you. Don't try to learn it all the night before because memorizing yes no answers is not enough. Her assignments and grading are fair.
She deserves a 5/5. She wants you to understand the material and helps you do that by weekly forums. The forums are there to help you understand the weeks material and better understand. This class is easy if you work for it and it is not difficult at all. One of the best profs I have ever had.
Sweetest person ever! I wish I could have met her in person because she is so amazing. I am not a philosophy major and was worried about this class, but she made it so easy. I wish she taught another class I could take.
Articles rather than a textbook, most provided by the prof. Clear presentations, occasionally her sense of humor comes through. Written forums promoted great discussions. Prof encourages creativity without sacrificing high standards.
She s super nice you wont have to do the readings and there isnt much hw. would reccomend
Her course consisted of weekly forum posts where you answered questions about the weekly readings (2-3 a week), an essay assignment (where you had to answer questions that formed an essay), a take-home midterm, and a final essay (we chose from 5 possible topics). Lectures were boring but mandatory. You'll be fine if you keep up with the readings.
She is amazing. Just take this course with her and you will pass the course with useful knowledge and good grade.
Easy to pass the course. Readings can be long but she is okay with students skimming through them. Easy marker. Exams are short and straight forward. Melinda is kind and creates an environment where students feel comfortable joining into discussions. She is willing to help whenever it is needed.
Her lectures get very boring at times but class was interesting and we had discussions frequently
If you need extra help attend office hours - she will work with you till you understand it. I had to miss class and got behind but it turned out OK. In class there's a nice balance so that not all of it is lecture(three hour classes!) but some spent working on problems. Also she brings in current philosophical and ethical issues connected to logic
BE REGULAR IN CLASSES U WILL PASS THIS COURSE EASYLY IT IS DIFFICULT TO BE WITH HER SOME TIMES BUT THE COURSE IS VERY EASY
I've had 3 classes from her. She involves everyone in the class and asks a lot of questions to see how people are understanding, and she expects people to be able to think through steps and not do shortcuts. I recommend for those 3000 level courses you need to complete your major as well as logic.
I enjoyed taking Melinda's class, she explains ideas clearly and well, and while her lecture notes were a bit barebones, there were enough supplied materials that I never had any major trouble learning the material. She is also a fairly easy grader, so I never felt stressed in her class, even with the final exam
Easy course to do well in. Melinda explains ideas very clearly and in an understanding manner. The exams are very easy as well and she is a super easy marker too. Highly highly recommend Melinda!
Great prof, even if you struggle with the course work but you show up to class and try to do well you will pass. and if you are a good student and let her know you are struggling she will help you and take into consideration you are trying, plenty of assignments for you to do to maintain or get a higher grade. Fail a exam not to worry
It's like sweet medicine. I am smarter after taking her course.
