i'm pretty sure she's the worst prof i've ever had. she listens to you answer, then says, "not quite" before you go around the circle for 15 minutes to find out that the answer she's looking for is the one in her head that no one else can come
You can get three grades on your commentaries - a check, a check plus, or a check minus. No matter how hard you try... you won't get the check plus. I doubt the check plus really even exists.
Every time you see a 1,1,1 you tend to think that the person is upset and exaggerating. Well, that's just not the case at all. The worst professor I have ever had.
WOW...perhaps the worst prof of my entire college career. She will listen to you...then tell you that you are wrong 20 minutes later. She is a MAD FEMINIST and seems to hate (and not pass) and male that takes her. If you arent an ENGL Major...forget it
why is this woman still teaching? she does not want to put the work into doing it, but demands the fulfillment of the most banal of details. this is the class that has been the biggest waste of time in the history of time.
If you are a male, do not take this class. If you are female, hesistate and still do not take this class. She is, by far, the worst professor I have EVER had.

Your 'commentaries' will be little more than toilet paper to her. If reading minds and the stifling of creativity is not your forte, I'd advise against taking this class. Just write down everything SHE says and regurgitate it for the exams.
Do not take this class with her if you are sane. the worst professor i had during my college career. in plain english, its a waste of time, money, and effort.
Its a hard class, but shes a really nice lady. If you don't understand something you can show up to office hours and discuss it. she'll never give you the answer flat out, but she doesn't make it too hard. The class had a really good format.
She is the most boring woman on the face of the earth. I wanted to kill myself every time I had to go to class. Takes attendance, so make sure you get notes you miss. Tests are difficult.
I enjoyed her class, and I believe that she has a lot offer her students if they are willing to listen and do the work. The check + does exist I recieved a few of them. I think she is a nice lady and a wonerful teacher
TAKE MARY RICHER!!!! this lady is horrible, although clear and precise is her theme, she herself is far from it. i think she'd find flaws in hemmingway! must memorize precisely stupid info for exams, very very hard
She's like a little hobbit jumping all through her notes and lecture; her commentary assignments are a waste of time as we're never actually on task or on the right day of assignments she gives, so, we never get to discuss them. Don't miss a class.
Not too bad, just do the work and write notes. Tests are a little tough but not bad if you pay attention. Overall not bad.

She's the type of prof to ask stupid questions, and then you feel really dumb answering them. Tests weren't too bad, but you really do have to memorize some stuff. Only two tests, no final, and you write your big paper in a group so really you only have to write 3 pages. Not bad, but boring class

She'll bore the pants off of you. Fall asleep in class all the time. Very unhelpful. Is set in her opinions, and if you write something that you thought the story was about, automatically it was wrong! Her way or the highway. Take someone else.
This class was not only the most boring thing ever, but the prof was horrible. The only thing I found interesting about her were the various excentric shoes she wore each class period. Don't expect to come out of this class with a good grade... or having a very positive attitude about English!
She only wants you to say what she wants to hear. Any other opinions are null and void. The class is excrutiatingly boring and never ending. ugh, don't get me started on the midterm.
TOUGH TEACHER...but if you take notes, memorize them for the test, work hard with your group for the paper, and follow her directions, it's not TOO bad. She will help but can be really harsh so don't take her words to heart.
This professor is frustrating; unless you somehow know how she feels about a text, you can't possibly have the right answer. She purposely covers mostly female writers and offers only narrow interpretations, shooting down students who try to read into the text themselves. Tests are essays that she grades based on how she feels about the stories.
Wow it is so hard to follow whats going on. She is always behind the schedule and is soooo boring.
Her opinion is the only possible right opinion. I hate that. You're not allowed to have your own view of a story that you just read, it's automatically wrong. The stories she had us read were bogus anyway. A bunch of crap.

I had her for a survey English class and it was incredibly hard, but I LOVED her for business writing. She's VERY organized and would do anything for you. 3 out of 4 tests we could use our notes on. If you fail it's your own fault.
I participated in every class (me and two other people) and I did wonderful on the response papers but I ended up getting the worst grade I've ever gotten in college (a C-) I thought I was getting an A. This woman is nothing but pure evil and not a very nice woman to ask for help from.
she's very unclear with what she wants from you and you end up doing poorly on all your response papers because of it. her opinion is the only one that matters--even if you have a different interpretation of a story you just read. stay clear of her if you want a good grade!
I never received a grade below an A- in any writing class at MU, that is, until I took her class. Run fast, and far, away from any of her classes. Seriously.
Do not take if you don't like participating, cuz if you don't participate, your grade will suffer, and she is the hardest grader EVER! You have to tell her what she wants to hear, she feels that she is always right. Nice personality, terrible prof.

Horrible prof! She could really benefit from taking some classes on how to teach. She doesn't provide rubrics for grading, so it seems that she randomly creates grades for papers (B or lower - she apparently does not believe in A's). Stay away!
Very nice professor. somewhat crazy. holds class in a discussion style and stresses participation. make sure you read- even if you dont find the stories interesting yourself, she will teach you something about them that will make you totally rethink them. you will learn a lot and she is very nice as long as you are a decent student. :)
She is difficult but not impossible, don't believe all of the people who say she is terrible, they must be slackers. If you do your work, study, and participate in class you will be fine. She is a great analytical thinker. I love to read and she taught me things about the stories I never found. I took her class as a challenge and was satisfied.
She is tough, but you will learn A LOT. A's are not impossible. I came out of the semster with an A-. You have to participate and pay attention. She's a sweet lady and she knows her****. There is a right/wrong answer for her, but that doesn't mean you have to upchuck whatever she says. Just be able to back up what you say! Very interesting class.
wow. well i read this before taking her, i had no choice really no other classes were open. she is horrible. you circle ur seats every class and you write a commentary every week. it's "opinion" based but it's her opinion, and she will shut u down in front of the whole class if u don't say what she is thinking. it's rough and i would recommend you
You read a story or multiple stories for every class. Each week, you have to write a synopsis on one of the stories. Difficult grader, boring class, not much room for error.
By far the worst prof. I've encountered in my 3 years at MU. There's no timeline for exams and she actually argued with the class about telling us about an exam when she never said a word. DON'T TAKE HER!

She is def. not the best English professor I have had. She is not too too bad though. The class in general is horrible, probably because the discussions are extremely BORING and the commentaries are ANNOYING. The exams (only 2) are in essay format, so have blue books handy!!
Taking a class with Rosenthal is pointless. She literally reads straight from the book. There is no point in going to class except for the fact that attendance is 20% of your grade. The project is useless and tedious. She does not give a timeline for due dates.DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF.
Run! This woman is ridiculous. Incredibly boring and takes attendance every class. If you miss 5 you automatically fail the course and is also 1/3 of your grade. She marked half the class absent when SHE showed up 25 minutes late and half the class had left after the mandated 15/20 minute waiting period. Do not take her or your gpa will suffer.

I really enjoyed this class. Attendance is mandatory and there is a lot of note-taking but I learned a lot and found it interesting. She can get upset if you are not prepared, but if you do the work and participate in class it is a great class. She is very knowledgeable about literature and seems to enjoy teaching it.
She's a nice person; my biggest complaint is about the "commentaries" which we had to write on some stories. While you aren't allowed to look anything up about the themes, etc. you are expected to come up with what she believes is the correct answer. People who looked stuff up got better grades. If your trying to be honest, your grade suffers.

If you cant take notes (since she is so soft spoken and boring) then you will fail every test. She will ruin your life and definitely your GPA RUNNNNNN!
Do not take a class with her. She's a really harsh grader. It's literally impossible to please her. There are few opportunities to improve your grade and she is beyond helping you. I liked the material, but she is a horrid professor.
Not the best of professors. She has two essay exams that are graded incredibly hard, and then she also does short essays on readings that need to be a min of 250 words, but they need to be much longer. She can be helpful if you go to her during the office hours but doesn't do much to help your grade.

She's a very knowledgable person on American literature & her lectures are easy to follow, clear & straightforward. She stays on topic & if you don't like class discussions, don't bother. As long as you read the material, pay attention, go to class & take notes, you'll be ok. Two exams - each two essays which can be difficult, but ok if you study.
Rosenthal's grading criteria is unclear, and she gives little feedback. Participation is VERY important, but she wants to lecture even though she says she wants discussion. Fight to get a word in every class! Don't buy the texts-you can find all the readings online. Exams are traditional essay. You will run out of time but she CURVES massively.
Nice lady, not a great teacher. Very hard grading on the only two test essays. Homework load was never a problem, but class discussions were typically very dull and lacked inspiration.
Really nice woman, but her tests are impossible and her lectures are very boring. I hope you're good at memorization because it is key to getting a good grade. However, if you hand in papers and participate in class, you should squeak by with a C.
Had for English comp. Alot of homework. Doesn't teach much in class. All homework and then saying how we did it, but she doesn't explain much.
I was afraid to take this class after reading her rates on here i considered dropping and finding a new prof. I ended up staying in her class and actually enjoyed it! I skimmed the readings before class or even during lectures and made sure to speak up EVERY DAY! Tests are not that hard as long as you remember what you talked about in discussion!
Dr. Rosenthal is very nice and shows passion for her subject but she requires us to know a lot about the reading material. We had 1 paper due a week min. 250 words on each story we read. Our discussions in class were boring and time went by slow- it's all lecture. She grades VERY hard and gives you no info on what the midterm or final is.
Rosenthal is caring and will work with you outside of class to help you better your writing. She expects a lot of detail and specificity in your answers in class and on the tests which makes it difficult sometimes to get good grades. Classes are all discussion/lecture. Participation matters. Read the stories because she WILL call on you.
She really cares that people actually learn, and she is understanding when it comes to not attending class, even on test days.
Rosenthal's tests aren't actually that hard. Just study and you'll be good, and she curves every time. Also, very sweet lady.
No rubrics used, so requirements for assignments unclear. Does not teach skills helpful for business, just facts you can Google. Makes it clear she rarely gives As and grades tests harshly. Did not submit one individual writing assignment in this advanced writing course. Unacceptable for advanced writing course! Avoid this professor at all costs!
I took Dr. Rosenthal for ENG230 and it was one of the best classes Ive taken at Millersville. There wasnt much homework and the discussions we had in class were very beneficial to doing well on the tests. The bad reviews on here are obviously from people who could not get an easy A. Dr. Rosenthal loves what she teaches and cares a lot.
Dr. Rosenthal did not give clear rubrics for what she wanted on literary commentaries or tests (she gives tests in essay format). She made us buy 2 large (and somewhat expensive books)and 5 major stories we had to fend for ourselves and hopefully find online for free somewhere. Isn't clear, and assumes everyone understands what she is talking about
She's a nice lady and all. But if you don't do the reading, she will call you out on it and the class grade is primarily based on the midterm and final. She's not very clear with what she expects and doesn't tell the criteria until AFTER the fact.
Nice I guess but her class was so boring and she graded so harshly. Answers basically had to be the EXACT words she said in class.
Loved her but you will work for your grade. I graduated Cum Laude and although my grade brought my gpa down, I know that I received a quality education. If you want to pay for an A, this class is not for you, if you want a Professor who cares and wants you to actually learn-this is the one. Challenge yourself to meet her expectations!
