Melisa is friendly and she has a sense of humour even during lectures. However, her notes are not anything new and are all straight from the textbook, so you wouldn't even have to attend the lectures to understand the material because it's all from the textbook. She rushes through material a little quickly. Go to class 'cause she gives bonus marks.
She is funny and friendly. She's new at Langara and her notes are straight from the textbook. Her quizzes are straight forward if you've read her notes. Her tests are fair
good prof in terms of how she teaches you and she's very clear. her quizzes are fair, kind of tricky but not bad. the exam so far is not near what her quizzes look like.....there is no give away mark ques(as in a easy ques). you have to attend her class for in class assignments......
Dr. Hamilton is very nice, and knowledgable. The problem is when she replies to a question she is talking at us rather than really wanting us to grasp the concept she is trying to teach. I think that is where her lack of experience in teaching plays in. She goes way too fast. Melisa, is a sweet person, but I wouldn't take her class again.
Her quizzes are no where near how hard her tests are.
She goes through the material way too fast. Her expectations for her students are a too high.
just don't take her......
I will agree with others that Melisa's exams are much harder than her quizzes. I found her exams to be quite fair. Not the easiest class, but by no means was it difficult. All notes are posted online, so you don't really need to attend class, however, quizes/in class work is worth and easy ~10%.
She speaks fairly quickly, but her notes are pretty straightforward and is what her tests are based off of. Assignments and quizzes were free marks, so just show up and study. Marked fairly and is willing to explain if you have questions. Don't know why the comments here are so negative. She went through material quickly, but she wasn't THAT bad
She is my favorite teacher! Her exams are difficult but fair. The course is not a slack course. It requires reasonably amount of studying. Melisa is super helpful. She always takes time to help you when you have questions. She makes the class materials really interesting. I love her! You should definitely take this class!!!!!!
Her tests, while they are not easy, are fair. As long as you pay attention in class and you read the notes carefully, you should be able to do fine in class. She's very helpful if you come to her and ask her questions
If you love organized teachers you will love Melisa. You will want to attend class b/c 15% of your mark is quizzes and assignments. Test are fairly easy, mostly from notes that are given to you, as long as you study them. Nice professor overall. Would definitely take her again.
Melisa is a fantastic Biology instructor. She provides real life examples during her lectures that pull the concepts together. She takes the time to provide clear, concise, and relevant notes for her students. The quizzes and activities that make up part of your mark help you to keep on top of your studying and further your understanding of topics.
Melisa makes it easy to well on exams because they're based off of her notes. If you study the notes she gives you and ask questions then you're on the right track. Sometimes she slips in questions regarding comments she made during class that aren't in the notes so it's important to pay attention in class. Best advice: GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!
Dr. Hamilton is amazing. She may move quickly, but she's also remarkably good at nailing concepts into your head. She's funny and entertaining in lectures, and she's approachable, helpful and insightful throughout. She is happy to help with any difficulties you may have in her course and you should definitely take advantage of that.
She is FAST but clear. People formerly called her the freight train as she just keeps on going, but I don't see that. She's very helpful, approachable and funny, and she made the lecture material a lot more entertaining than it had to be. If you ever get the chance; TAKE HER COURSE. She's super organized and maintains well structured lectures.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Hamilton. She is a fast talker and gives a huge lot of details all at once but she is very nice if you have any questions you need to ask of her. I had to study a whole lot! But I did quite okay in the end. You can, too.
Very nice teacher, and funny at times. Had very good lecture notes and even prints them out for you. But she doesn't give back quizzes and midterms, which in my opinion is detrimental. If you don't know what your doing wrong there's no way you can improve.
Energetic? Entertaining? If you're like me, you wouldn't describe 8:30am lectures like that, but Dr. Hamilton pulled it off. She went through the material quickly, but she still took the time to help those who were falling behind after class and during her office hours. Tests are easy as long as you read up on material and asked for help if needed
If you need any help, she will be there. Her exams are tough but she will help you study for it if you ask for help. She's enthusiastic , so her lectures aren't boring. Pay attention in class. Draw maps, charts, and teach other students so you can understand the material instead of memorizing it.
Melisa is pretty funny, which helps to make an otherwise dry topic interesting. Sometimes gets lost in her lectures trying to find the right word, but she knows her stuff. Tip for patho: Understand the processes going on instead of memorizing. Know WHY something is happening, the CAUSES, and the EFFECTS. Once you understand it everything is easy
Her questions are very confusing and difficult to understand. It takes lot of time to understand what she is expecting from us. I have difficulty understanding what she means
She teaches students as if theyre in kindergarten, but grades them like theyre in Grad school. 1115 was pretty tough because it's difficult to know what her expectations are. You basically have to understand concepts in all levels (molecular, cellular, etc). Plus, expect paper assignments every lecture. This course got me swearing every night.
Dr. Hamilton does a wonderful job of explaining difficult concepts. She gives lots of assignments, quizzes, and iClicker questions to boost grades. The onus is on the student to make the time to review quizzes/exams during her office hours. This course is very difficult and she is incredibly supportive of her students. She's one in a million.
just avoid her if you can
Melissa was one of the best teachers I have ever had at Langara. The people who give her a bad rating probably took 1115 which is just a very hard course. She cares and connects with students. She is very approachable so ask as many questions as you want. She's energetic and very easy to listen to.
She really cares about her students, study major concepts and you will do great. Don't be afraid to ask questions, she gives note packages which is super helpful, after the midterms she gives you a chance for extra credit. There are also quizzes that keep you on track. One of the best teachers I have ever had, being in her class was a privilege.
Melisa is an awesome instructor. She really cares about her students and their learning. Bio 1115 was my first bio ever in life. bio 1115 is a hard course; however, if you study hard and be active , you will be fine. Melisa teaches very well. She is one of the best prof i have ever had at Langara. Take her class if you can. Got A .
Melisa is a great bio prof! I took her for biol1191 and I wish I took her for 1190 as well. She relates the material to real life situations to make t easier to understand, and she breaks down concepts to make it easier to learn step by step. Every bio class is hard and a lot of work, but Melisa made the lectures very entertaining!
Melisa is a great prof! Her tests really challenge you to think and tests your understanding. She sometimes forgets what certain things are during lecture, but overall is great! She's very caring and wants you to succeed in the course. Assignments and quizzes are based on her notes so focus on those and use the text for clarification.
Melisa made everything so easy to understand. When the class didn't understand something, she would take time to go over things twice and make sure we understood the concepts. She's also super approachable and genuinely wants her students to do well! Her quizzes focus on little details, but only from her notes, so study hard and you'll do good.
Melisa is the best biology professor at langara. Very thorough and makes everything clear. You have to work for your marks but its not hard if you put in the work! Tests/Midterms are not hard if you studied, really sweet and is always there if you need clarification on any concepts.
ONE OF THE BEST PROF in LANGARA! Shes funny and easy to talk to.
I took Melisa's class during summer semester and I would definitely choose her again. Concepts explained clearly, and the notes were well organized. Her wording is confusing at times, but she always offers to explain or reword it. Just put up your hand and ask. She would reword it as many times as you need. She is kind and approachable too
Not for everyone. Her lectures are great and she explains really well but makes these annoying, unnecessary pauses in her dialogue. Tests are super tough and mostly written and if you write too much or too little, she will doc you marks. Also not very approachable if you are struggling. Some students gave up and didn't bother go to her exam
Pretty good at giving lectures. Tests are near impossible. Declares to be approachable but is really not. Coldest person i've ever met.
Just no...
Took 1190 over the summer - definitely a heavy class, especially at 8:30. She makes the lectures entertaining and while she can be a little confusing at times, she's always willing to slow down and explain specific concepts. Exams are tough because you need to be able to apply concepts, but she gives lots of chances to boost marks in class.
Melisa's tests are unnecessarily hard. The wording in her questions is very confusing. She also is very moody... she snaps at students for little things. I honestly don't think she is a teacher for the purpose of helping students, I think it's because she likes the title. She will take every opportunity to talk about her research. Avoid if you can!
Intense and heavy course. Tests are 100% based off lecture slides. Learn themGood mark on test. Mid/Final are mix of Multiple,Fill in,Short,Long answer. Very kind+knowledgeable prof. Not fond of lab portion. NOTE, this course is back end heavy. Stay ontop of readings+lab notes to not get swamped at the end. You do NOT need to purchase text book.
Melisa's lectures can be dry and boring, but the course itself is. She gives weekly assignments and quizzes. If you do plan to skip class, make sure you have a classmate to contact about the fill in the blank notes. She teaches v fast and can sound annoying at times. She's willing to help you if you ask, so don't be scared to speak up.
Great bio prof if you actually want to LEARN and not memorize. Need to put 100% effort into her class if you want to do well. Very knowledgable, makes lectures fun, however found myself overwhelmed at the end of some classes. Gives fair amount of assessments to help with understanding; quizes, assignments, iclickers. Overall great experience!
The tests had some confusing and poorly worded questions and answers. Her tests are hard and beyond the level of nursing students. She teaches fast, mostly reading off the slides. You cannot miss class as you miss the icklicker questions which are marked. Her quizes are MC, FIB and short answers. My knowledge was not reflected in the marks. Hated!
She needs to work on the wording of her test questions but her tests are fair, I didn't feel like I was tested on something she didn't teach. The class is hard, but she doesn't make the curriculum so that's not her fault. It's not an easy class, be prepared to do a lot of reading. She is strict but if you make a valid point she'll give you the mark
Tough prof, but really fair. Exams were worded poorly but never on content that was unfamiliar. Quizzes are short answer and fill in the blank but the exams are mc. Also gives clicker marks which is nice. Better than a lot of other patho profs, but does talk really fast so ask if you can record her. Really only need to read the slides to do well.
She is a patient person who understands students and can easily recognize which students are the best fit for healthcare system. She accepts logical complaints students have about their exam, and if evidence is provided, a fair grade will be added to the exam. Beside being a professor, she is a very kind and lovely human.
Multiple choice exams fair but some questions worded in a confusing, unclear way. For quizzes, some open-ended questions marked unfairly as they weren't specific enough with what she was wanting/looking for - safer to write down all you can remember from her slides, even if it's only worth 1 mark. She reminds us in every class that she has a PHD.
Melisa is a hard marker and you will only get full marks on things like conceptual questions (which are large parts of midterms) if you answer the questions based on the way she wants which caught me off guard based on the first 1190 midterm. But if you do pay attention in class she gives good examples that help with that. Recommendation: prolly no
Melisa makes lectures simple and engaging since the lecture notes have fill in the blanks that you need to fill out. Her assessments that she gives out do help you with studying but her strict marking could possibly hurt your grade. Her tests usually focus on major key concepts and usually goes off her handouts/notes.
Melisa is a very good teacher and is great at explaining difficult concepts but her marking is crazy. your answers need to be worded in a specific way to receive marks, even if what you wrote is correct.
Loved Melisa, super friendly and knowledgable. She explained complex concepts well. This class is a lot of work, but it's possible to do really well.
Melisa is very smart and you can tell she is passionate about biology. She gives lots of worksheets and examples to help you understand the concepts (you will actually learn in her class!). She is always happy to help and always encourages students to attend office hours. However, her exams are slightly harder than necessary.
Her exams are to expect from a REAL teacher, unlike teachers that give away points by making exams easy. With her, you actually learn, remember and are ready to apply concepts learned. People that say she's hard is because they want to be spoon fed, she literally says the answers out loud (she says it and then does a pause). Go to offi hrs w/ quest
Her course is not for the faint of heart. She gives you a bit of tough loving but it is completely effective (get ready to cry a little while studying for her exams). However, she grades fairly and gives you the opportunity for bonus marks. She offers exceptional support if needed. I definitely recommend Melisa for pre-nursing students!!!
Melissa is very knowledgeable and her lectures were engaging. She genuinely wants the best for her students. When I went to her to review my exams, she would GUIDE me to figure out the correct answers myself, instead of spoon feeding me. After all, this takes more of her time. I found her exams to be a bit challenging tbh, but that's how we learn!
Hard instructor w/ hard material. Class has no readings (only recorded lectures). It's open note but questions consist of understanding concepts and applying / explaining them. Requires specific wording for short answers + will have trick Q's. Lots of material that coincides with clinical / other courses which was helpful during MT's and Quizzes.
Melisa is a great prof. You can tell that she is passionate about what shes teaching and shes very knowledgeable. However, her exams are tough so be ready to study hard and make sure to read her questions carefully because she words them tricky. Dont bother to memorize - she expects you to understand the content and will test you that way!
Melisa is very knowledgeable about the material, however her recorded lectures really dragged as she would go over details that were way too particular and did not need to be known. Short answers on quizzes needs to be detailed but also concise, however, there was never enough time given and you couldn't even think about what you were writing.
I took my prerequisites with her and really enjoyed them, but patho was super disappointing. All of her quizzes and exams were supposedly open book but the time limits were such that you had to know everything without a reference. She also goes way too into detail and expects you to know what info to prioritize.
Patho is very content-heavy, but Melisa is very knowledgeable and great at explaining important concepts. Her exams are open book, but her questions really make you think so don't focus too much on memorizing the content. Prerecorded lectures were just the ppt notes but in more detail. Also, I found her tutorials very helpful!
Melisa's recorded lectures and PP slides are excellent. Very comprehensive and approachable. She is also available for office hours to help with anything you don't understand. I recommend Melisa and will try to study with her again in the future. 10/10
Melisa is a very kind, knowledgable, and dedicated professor. She went over a lot of material in her lectures but only the main concepts were on the exams. She also pointed out which concepts would be on her exams, so that you knew which ideas to study.
Melissa's midterms are ridiculously difficult. She also made the final exam so that each question could have 2 possible answers. I felt that she wanted people to fail. No opportunities for grade boosts, 6 % max for assignments and tutorial participation. She was also pretty rude and passive-aggressive this semester for unknown reasons.
Melisa is nice, but is tough. Her exam questions are difficult and 95% of the time youre just trying to figure out what she's asking. It's like she expects you to be at a PhD level already. But if the class is struggling she is willing to take questions out. Patho takes up most of your time, so hard to focus on other classes, plan your time wisely
Melisa is really great! She does all she can to prep you for midterms and finals, and seems to be truly passionate about bio. There are some trick questions in her exams, so make sure you study her slides really well and listen carefully in class because thats how you get a good picture of what she will test you on.
Melissa's midterms were challenging and tricky but all of the questions were in her powerpoint slides. Her lecture can sometimes be confusing especially the way she uses analogy. Definitely reach out to her during office hours. Also, don't just memorize, she expects you to know the concept and will test you that way!
Very helpful! make sure you ask her questions about tests/quizzes/study tips, as she is always willing to share ideas on scoring better. tests are NOT hard, it is just the sheer amount of material you need to know.
She is very nice and you can tell that she is passionate about BIO, but she is a very hard tester. If u meet with her to talk about grades and they aren't great, she isn't overly kind in the way she explains what you did wrong. But gave me advice before I dropped the class. However, without naming me she told other students my grade, which I hated
Melisa was one of the best bio profs I've ever had. She explains everything so thoroughly, in a way that really helps you understand some really complex concepts. Her quizzes are difficult, however, her midterms and final aren't as bad. She emphasizes the bigger picture and doesn't focus on small details that we wouldn't need to know as nurses.
This course was very heavy in content. The quizzes were difficult because it was short answer/fill in the blank, however the midterm and finals were easier because it was multiple choice. Melissa was good at lecturing and explaining the diseases, however, her exams were difficult and had some tricky questions.
I felt that she wanted people to fail. Melissa's exams are ridiculously difficult. She also made the final exam so that each question could have 2 possible answers. Her lectures are tiring, she is tiring. She is also pretty rude and passive-aggressive for unknown reasons.
Melisa is one of the best professors ever! She is very passionate and keeps us engaged. She is very welcoming and kind during office hours and I feel super supported. If you study hard and try to understand the concepts, you will be fine in her class! So glad I got to have her as an instructor.
You are in good hands if you have Melisa as a prof! You will learn so much. The course has a lot of topics and content but just try to focus on the big pictures rather than the small details for examination. Just study and understand the material and you will be fine. The best bio prof there is!
I had 0 passion for Patho but Melisa changed that! She makes a hard & heavy class enjoyable & hilarious. She is kind and cares for her students as long as you show up try your best. Go to her office hours to chat out topics you don't understand, but don't go demanding marks.. OH! & DON'T BE AFRAID of the group exams! we asked for them by the end.
Great at explaining tough concepts but her exams can be quite difficult and tricky. Be specific as possible on written quiz answers as she is a hard marker. Quizzes were much harder than exams. Group exams are a grade booster and nothing to be worried about. She is incredibly supportive if you go to her office hours. Overall fantastic prof!
Melisa's course has only a 6% grade booster: the assignments and i-clicker questions. However, her exams had a group portion which really boosted our marks. Overall she is a good teacher, a hard marker for the quizzes so be specific. Hot tip: if you are struggling show her effort and in the end, if you need 1-2 % to pass she may give it to you.
She's a decent teacher but sometimes exam questions don't reflect the lectured content. She claims to test broad concepts but then asks the most minuscule questions on exams. Group exams can bring your mark up or down depending on your group which was really unfair. Quizzes were fair though.
Melisa was a great prof! I enjoyed listening to her lectures and found her to be one of the better patho instructors. Exam q's were either reasonable or very specific, and the group exams either hurt or boost your grade. Quizzes I found to be fair. She is also open to fighting a mark if you explain a valid rationale. Defs expect to study lots
Melisa was super approachable and had engaging lectures. She has a group exam worth 15 percent of each midterm and final grade. Quizzes have very detailed questions. EVERYTHING in the slides is testable. lots of all of the following are true EXCEPT questions. Know the cancers. Understand the etiology VS. Pathogenesis. Best patho class yet
Melisa is nice, intimidating during lectures, must attend classes. Quizzes and Exams are Difficult. Group exam - advice answers should be based on majority votes or sound reasoning. If answers split, come back to the question later. I recommend asking the opinions of everybody, patience, and cooperative atmospheres with critical thinking.
I have had Paul, Rebecca, and Melissa for all 3 pathos and my term with Melissa was amazing! She is by far my favourite and teaches the best. She actually cares about her students and tries to educate us well. If you put effort in it will show in your grade. I would have wanted her for all 3 pathos!
She is very smart and teaches well. Her exams and quizzes are definitely fair and it is a blessing she conducts the group portion for exams. Be thankful if you have her as an instructor. Also she boosted a lot of students who actually failed so she is kind. She is genuine and willing to answer all questions during office hours. Very approachable
There needs to be more praise about Melissa! One of the best profs I have ever had! I am happy and grateful I got to be in her class and be taught by her. I learned so much and still retain a lot of the content. She is understanding and cares for her students, a rare quality in langara instructors. She is one of the best!
She graded final exams for our section because my professor had some kind of emergency and she could not continue teaching the course. I must say Melisa is such a tough grader. I am sure that I would not have got such a low score on my final if it was graded by some other instructor. Awful.
Melisa is a friendly prof if you do well in her class and consistently achieve high grades. Her lectures can be a bit dry, but her iclicker questions make the lecture much more tolerable. Attend lecture, she will test on verbal information. Her exams and quizzes require you to think critically so be sure to study! overall 4/10
knew a lot about what she was talking about. and would answer everyones questions. but she told another student my grade on one of midterm, &i lost respect for her because of that. so i dropped the class. she didn't name me, but told the student that the student in the meeting before failed the exam. &they told me after bc they watched me walk out
I am pretty strong with patho, but this term she is making me unlearn everything. Her questions are so confusing as you are trying to decipher what she is even trying to ask you. I would focus this class as top priority if you have her in the future as she is brutal and will cause a lot of stress. Goodluck baby nurses, you will do great as I did!
Gives project last minute and grades it very hard. doesnt care about your feelings literally on the last three weeks of class a project quiz and final was all one week apart from each other. final possible to pass. if i weee id drip out because at the end of the day if u dont drop she fail you anyways.
It was so lovely to have a wonderful little project two weeks before the final and the third quiz in between. When you deck the halls with boughs of holly, remember these precious moments with Melisa. Merry Christmas to you, Dr. Hamilton and Happy New 2025 Year!
Melisa is passionate about teaching patho however, her unrealistic expectations from students is concerning. She's VERY passive aggressive, lacks understanding, and packs the last few weeks of the semester with a project, quiz, and final exam. I have learned a lot from her class but the amount of stress + her lack of understanding drove me crazy.
She is VERY knowledgable but she expects us to learn at her level. Passive-aggressive. She once made comment about how she can complete a 20-minute quiz in 3-minutes, despite her degree in bio and her making the quizzes herself. She is a hard-marker and will look at every minute details, like colours and fonts of a project. Get ready to cry.
Changed the syllabus a few weeks into the course increasing the weighing of exams and lowering weighing of assignments. Very passive aggressive and lacks understanding. Unwilling to hear you out on written quiz questions and extremely difficult marker. Exams/quizzes all over the place + refuses to give study guides. Unrealistic expectations.
Passive aggressive is her best description. Very close minded, and I am not sure about her background... She is not accessible during office hours, and can't explain the material appropriately. If possible, avoid!
After writing exams individually she has a part where u discuss answers w/ a group. Slides miss a lot of the info taught in class & in-class discussion is testable. In-class iClicker questions can be on exams. Assignments marked for completion. Fair quiz/exam questions but is not accommodating to changing marks even if ur half-right.
Melisa will hold you accountable and make learning patho not so miserable, if you put in the work.
Overall, I somewhat enjoyed her class, but I have to admit that her quizzes were hard and her exams really made you use your whole brain. However, she taught us to focus on the “why,” which helped me understand and enjoy the content a bit more.
