Great undergrad teacher(so she's easy!) However, YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU DO NOT READ!!! Other than the little reading she assigns(which turns out to be nothing once you take more classes)You will learn a lot of opposing view points so be ready Shimeka B
Very knowledgeable. Definitely MUST READ and PARTICIPATE in class discussions. If you do, you will get a good grade. She definitely makes you think.
MARTINETIC, TEACHES LIKE IT'S A KINDERGARTEN CLASS. GRADES LIKE IT'S A GRAD CLASS
Good teacher, makes you think you in 1st grade sometimes though. But she is around for help when you need it
She was very helpful if you get to know her. just show that your trying and you will do fine.
If you don't like participating in class, don't take this class. You have to read and participate to get a "good" grade. She's from Kansas-she brings that into class. She also says, "rock on" a lot-it bugs the crap out of me! I just hate that class. "Rock on" everyone.
this is the class where i learned that my studying skills arent all that great. i like her as a person, but grading papers? ugh. she is a good lecturer though. i participated alot in that class, but she would make it seem that i have it all wrong.read the required texts or youll have a QUIZ!
MUSTS: Read, Participate and did I mention participate? The whole class is basically discussion. If you dont like to talk, dont take the class. Gives 2 book reading assignments that require essays. 2 other short essays required. Study guides are very accurate, study them and youll get an A.
you have to do the reading!!! she is stricked on class participarion!!! tests are hard you have to study!!!!!
Do not get her as your history teacher. She demands you to participate in everythign and if you dont your grade drops. She has powerpoints that dont make any sense. Reminder: dont enroll in her class!!
Awesome teacher! Understood everything she had to say. Lectures were helpful. A lot of reading but if you went to her class and took notes during lectures you don't really need to read. I recommend her if you actually want to learn something. :)
If its fair for a teacher to hold a grudge against students, then it definitely happens in her class. I went to class everyday, always did homework, got As and Bs on everything but one day fell asleep for 30secs in class and she failed me for "lack of participation and respect" she's really crazy!!
If you want an A in this class, do the following: (1) show up on time and for every class, (2) do not sleep in class, (3) make comments as much as possible, even if they make no sense, (4) do all of the required reading, (5) write your hand off during the tests. I liked the class.
Prof. McGuire was an excellent teacher. She clearly states her intentions on the syllabus; show up to class, do the reading and be ready to talk about what you read. Easy as that. I enjoyed her class immensely and her sense of humor is refreshing.
Really nice, funny, keeps class interesting. You have to keep up w/ the reading tho, she gives quizzes sometimes. If you read the tests are not too bad. She's always there for help, and is an awesome professor. makes history really interesting
Good history teacher! She presents notes from the reading that people were supposed to do on powerpoint (very helpful) and discusses every bullet in her slide to break it down for her students. She asks for participation to indicate to her that her students are doing their assigned reading. she's go
She is an awesome professoor!!! all the ppl who say she is hard or that her tests were very challenging.... are obviously not ready for college! She is resonable you participate as much as you can and work hard... i didnt really study for my first test and got a C then studied hard on my final and got an A... recieved an A in the Class Put EFFORT
Very cool and very fair...i believe. and yeah id say a pretty good teahcer.
she give everyone a c in that class. and don't say anything that contradicts her, she'll black list you for the rest of the semster.
Great teacher. I put this class off till my last semester and having taken mostly upper divison stuff for awhile this was way easy. First off read the material in a history class I mean thats basically all history is. Tests were easy I ended up writing way
No Comments
Can you say boreding...Its not her its the class but I might have a different veiw after grades...or maybe i should just go to class
Good teacher. she obviously knows a lot about what she's teaching. It was a hard class and the tests are awful but it's doable and Prfessor McGuire is funny and nice. Hard class + fun teacher= ok
Worst class I've ever taken. You sit there and vegetate to powerpoint slides where you actually get stupider. The text for the class goes through whether the Brits or Americans were wearing ****in' underwear on a particular date. Stupidest**** ever, no intellectual engagement. All in all, nicest lady ever, worst class alive (very mundane).
All you do is go to class and listen to long boring lectures. In order to pass the class u need to read read read and be prepared for class. She likes students who PARTICIPATE which is 40% of your grade. Her tests were hard. Overall, I wouldn't take her again but she is pretty nice.
This class is pretty bad. I did the reading, yet failed the exams! Now, Im busting my @$$ for a C+ just so I don't have to retake it again! The teacher is really nice, it's just the class sucks! The textbook is hard to understand and her lectures are hard to follow. Good Luck!
i loved this teacher and the class was awesome.. anyone who didnt appreciate what mcguire had to offer and bring to the table each class meeting obviously isnt ready for college.. shes funny and sarcastic and she makes learning about stuff no one needs in everyday life interesting and entertaining.. two thumbs up mcguire!
She's a really good teacher, but you will only notice if you actually take the book out and read! If you are not serious about college yet, this is not the class for you. It's a lot of work, but you come out learning a lot. I'm not a history person, but she really wants her students to do well. All you have to do is read.
WORST TEACHER! TEST HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH LECTURE! IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THIS CLASS BE PREPARED TO READ EVERY LITTLE DETAIL IN THE TEXTS REQUIRED! FIRST TIME I FAILED A COURSE!
Don't take this class if you are not willing to participate...that is a good portion of your grade. Be prepared every class having already read the chapter and answered the questions on the syllabus. I thought she was a great teacher...she kept the lectures interesting and added in her humor to make it fun...DON'T FALL ASLEEP IN CLASS!
She was good when you paid attention
This teacher will call on random people to answer questions they do not know. Tests are VERY hard and all about "historical significance." If you are a history major, she is harder on you than the rest of the class. Take this class if and only if you will read every single page of reading homework that is assigned to you.
I found this class interesting but hard, she wants lots of participation. Only midterm and final, group work too. There is no timeline or ease of topics she just jumps around from subtopic to subtopic then will go back to fill in later. Makes using notes impossible. Just Read the materials and be prepared to talk participation counts big time.
I think she is a wonderful professor. YOu NEED to participate but over all she is a great person. Her letures can put you to sleep but DONT she'll hate you forever. If you have a really bad habit of not studying or not reading assigned books, this class is not for you. Her midterm and final are very hard I wont lie, make sure you study!!!!!!!
Shes way chill
I only took this class because it satisfied an upper level GE requirement, but this ended up being a class I will take with me forever. There was a lot of reading but all the articles were interesting and easy to read. Prof. McGuire is a really interesting teacher and knows her stuff. You'll get a lot out of this class!
She is a very sweet woman and is extremely intelligent. If you decide to take this class be prepared to read. You can not just take the class, show up sometimes and still pass the exams. I learned a significant amount of information in this class and I have not forgotten it like most classes. Only two tests and one paper.
Great class to gain insight on the history, differences and similarities of our diverse culture here in the US. The readings are great b/c they are based on live experiences. This class is a real eye opener & will make u want 2 go out there & make a difference. Discussion class, movies/videos, journal entry ea class mtg. know ur vocab 4 tests.
nice but hard!
Loved her! Her intelligence on the subject is out of this world. Participation and Reading a must. 1 paper and 2 tests. If you study and read you will do fine. You should definitely take her!!
Great class. Shes really informative but requires the reading, participation, and attendence. 2 books 1 paper 2 tests. She really knows her stuff when it comes to american history and is really a nice professor. Easy b or c!
She knows her stuff but expects everybody else to know it as well as she does. She grades hard so if you dont do well on one assignment your whole grade drops. Only 2 tests and one paper so you better study hard!
I loved her!! She is so knowledgable! Shes funny and doesn't take anyones crap. You must work hard to get a good grade but the class is interesting so it makes it easier! I got an A!
She is an awesome professor. She knows her material very well, and her lectures are actually interesting. Her class is never boring, but their is always alot of reading to do for homework. I highly recommend this class if you are willing to work hard. She is extremely helpful during her office hours and I regret not using that to my advantage.
She is extremely difficult. She makes the history interesting, which I never was before her class, but you have to be dedicated to her class. There is a lot of reading every night. And she gets REALLY upset if you don't read. Grades mostly based on midterm and final. MUST go to class to hear her lectures. She's nice, but it's a tough class.
She is AWESOME!! Seriously, her class isn't easy but it's so worth it if you actually try. READ and GO TO CLASS.. sounds like a hassle but if you have any heart, you'' love it. She's hilarious and so passionate about what she teaches. I became a history lover after her class
This teacher teaches history with a passion. All i have to say is do ALLLLLL the readings, study hard, her test are hard if you dont know every detail. Specifics and detail are important to her, very hard class, she talks a lot but she knows what shes talking about, and thats your job to keep track. GOOD LUCK! HA
Teacher is very tough right off the bat. If you dont try the first day, your not going to do well. Teacher is a good teacher, but makes it very hard for students to learn
By far my favorite teacher ever. Anyone that has negative things to say about her class obviously just didnt try or take her class seriously.SHe made history interesting and the stuff I learned really touched me. The class is hard but its an awesome class I never wanted to miss. She is hilarious! earn brownie points by bragging about the show House
Shes crazy... hardest class i've ever taken. Avoid her!!!
i liked the class....at first. she screamed at our class for not reading, but some of us did read, she just expects people to read her mind. i hate her. get out of her class asap and run!
This Professor, although has a tremendous passion for history, I think takes it a bit far when it comes to the students. She is a very critical grader and if you do not memorize the book and repeat it on your test VERBATIM as well as the documents you will fail. So I hope that you have a photographic memory and are only taking this course!
Great teacher, loves what she teaches. Participation is key in this class and so is reading if you read the text you will be fine. Prof. McGuire is always willing to help and loves when you ask questions.
This teacher has a bad attitude, seemed like she hated teaching, is a complete PSYCHO! and all she ever cared about is her sdtupid freaken documents...she barely went over anything from the book and the group presentations were a waste of time. She needs a new method of teaching or not to teach at all.
This professor is absolutely crazy. I was in her class for less than two weeks and withdrew as soon as I could. SOOOOOO much work and the textbook and other readings were extremely boring and hard to follow. She doesn't explain anything and her lectures are extremely boring. DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!!! Find another professor!!!
shes is a good teacher but RIDICULOUSLY hard! she gives a crazy amount of hmwk! she grades extremely hard and is a stickler on doing your hmwk! unless you want to work your ass off then get a different teacher!! also dont plan on passing your midtern or final, she'll fail your ass even if you did well.
Very nice person, but definitely a hard professor. Make sure to do ALL the document readings or just don't even bother coming to class or she will kick you out. Participate in class discussions as much as possible, and study for the tests, because all there is is a midterm and a final, with 2 group work assignments in between for your grade
DO NOT TAKE HER!! Class consists of midterm, final, group presentation, a book review, participation, and one homework assignment. She grades EXTREMELY harsh. You have to write exactly what she thinks is right, no leeway whatsoever. She never answered my e-mails. Way too much reading, not worth it. Spend your efforts elsewhere.
She is very into the subject and I liked her at first. However, she grades very harshly, and thinks she is an English teacher. If you do not write exactly what she wants on the tests, you will fail. Be careful, especially if you want to major in history. Her grading may change your mind, even though most hist profs don't grade like her.
She is an extremely hard teacher but it is very possible to pass the class!!!!! Be sure to do all of the readings for she will kick you out of class if you haven't.... if possible I would try and get a different teacher!!!!!
Yes there is a lot of reading, but if you cannot handle reading more than 25 pages a week, then you don't belong in college. Group Presentation, Book Review, Midterm, Final. VERY SIMPLE. She gives review sheets for both exams. I learned a lot in this class she doesn't take roll. Participate. I got an A. Take 131 if you're looking for an easy ride.
mcguire is totally fun! she loves what she teaches and even though there is a lot of reading involved you learn A LOT!!! I would definitely recommend her :)If you do take her class i suggest you come to class prepared!
GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN
She is really nice, and doesn't mind having you come into her office hours if you're unclear about an assignment. Just make sure you do the readings, or else you will not pass!
class was interesting. Teacher was very nice but test was very difficult and very in depth. You must do allll the readings and go to class to pass the class. It wasn't an easy class
She's a bit a difficult teacher, but she does what she says she's going to do. Follows the syllabus really closely, but can sometimes spend too much time on a topic, and then you'll have to catch up to where you're supposed to be. Do the reading and participate in class and you'll be fine. It's really not that difficult.
ok seriously do your readings, partisipate all the time and do the hwk! show you care and she will care about you. slave girl book was very good. super hard class but learned so much. i would take her again.
Very hard teacher. Tests are hard. She will kick you out of class for not reading. try to take different teacher if possible.
Worst prof I have ever had
I wouldnt reccommend her unless you like to spend a lot of time on history. a lot of boring readings and she grades harshly. and she is pretty unorganized which got stressful. pick another professor if possible.
really great person. very hard teacher. makes quizes and tests tricky! i read EVERYTHING she gave us: books, the text book, and the documents and still got a C-
Some people should not be in college...Professor McGuire is a great teacher, she engages you. The course is not that difficult, just have put the time in. She does grade harshly, but is understanding about late assignments. If you take one of her courses, PARTICIPATE! I took 5 other classes this semester and still got an A in her course.
awesome teacher, the class moves smoothly. i always felt bad for the people who didn't read or participate because she will call you out on your sh*t! she teaches this course like it is an upper division level class.
Really Fun Professor!
take this class only if you have tom have no job, love to read, and lots of free time. She makes you read 30pg chapters and documents, if u dnt read them u will get kicked out. i read everything in her class and studied, and continuously got Cs in her class. She teaches it like an upper division history class.
I really loved Melisa out of class, but DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Its the biggest waste of time and it was way to difficult to the point where i gave up. She gives way too much reading, you read like 100 pages a week. If you take this, you will most likely fail. She is the nicest person, I loved her A LOT. But her class was so boring and stupid.
Okay look, I took her and I loved her as a person and a teacher. Yes she can be a little hard, but I didn't do at least 70% of the reading and I still got an A-. I also loved her personality, and I hate history but she actually made it interesting for me. Just take her, it's college, stop acting like high schoolers. It's nice to be challenged.
Had to attend every class. Read at least 5-6 hours for each class (textbook, articles, and lectures) Learned a ton, but was a super hard for a GE class. Worked the hardest out of all my classes. All my other classes suffered because had to read so much!
Even my 300 level classes are not as demanding as this one is. This is an online class and she makes you come to campus (twice) for seminar and orientation. She thinks she is teaching grad school because honestly you will learn a LOT! Easily hurts your grade and may not something you want if you are looking to RISE your gpa.
She is one of those professors that tries to scare the hell out of you with lots of emphasizing on readings, exams, and seminars in your first year in college. She is nice but way to ambitious for what she wants from a 100 level class. I agree with the post below.
I hated this class. Melissa is the worst History teacher I have ever had. She makes you read a lot and write. For a 100 hundred level class, she makes it more than what it really has to be. She makes you read a book in two days. Then makes you sit in a circle the next day and answer questions/comments about what you read.
She makes the class much more difficult than it needs to be. Her tests don't cover what we learned in lecture. She was practically bragging that most students fail her exams. That is not something to be proud of. If most students fail, clearly there's a problem with the professor. Don't take classes with her.
I took this class online. What a mistake. I have taken an online class before but this one was horrible. She had just had a baby so idk if that is why or not but she didnt help at all. Your grade consists of forums and tests...that is all! Theres no credit for reading and doing any hw nor any extra credit. she expects a lot out of forums too.
She makes History interesting and isn't a boring monotone professor. There are two group essays that aren't difficult as long as you do the work. A midterm and a final. As long as you do the readings and do your work it is an overall good class. She is worth taking because she is entertaining and has a sense of humor
Do what you know you should as an adult and as a student and you will succeed. She is passionate and expects reading to be completed & thought about prior to class. If you struggle with reading for content, take this class and ask her for help! Her methods will change your way of studying!
The class consisted of Aplia assignments, forums, and three tests. Her lectures were long and very unappealing to listen to. This is my third online course, and by far, the worse one I ever took.
Lots of reading, overwhelming. You have to read a lot. Listen to the posts, avoid if you can. Otherwise, take her class and alone and count it as 9 units. Not the best class, would not recommend.
Not a bad professor. If you are a fan of history, she's actually pretty cool. Keep up with readings (which aren't that bad) and she'll love you.
If you're looking for an easy A, this is NOT the class! It was difficult, lot's of reading, and she is pretty tough when grading. Reading is MANDATORY! She kicks you out of class if you don't do the reading! If you do the work, study, and come to class regularly you will pass. She is passionate, engaging, and makes the subject interesting.
She was pretty amazing. Started out with a substitute since she was on maternity leave. She came back and was amazing. Her lectures were so interesting. If you're a history major, you'll appreciate her class. She was awesome.
A nice professor with a great personality, but History 102 with her was my worst class of my freshman year. Like others say, she teaches this course as if it were a much higher level class. I thought 102 was basically intro?? I had to drop after failing the midterm and not being able to obtain the reading book in time for the seminar (2 DAYS?!).
Good Luck
I definitely recommend Professor McGuire, she is a great lecturer that made History very interesting, but there is a lot of reading. If you actually listen to her lectures and do the reading, you will get an A. She has a great sense of humor and I thoroughly enjoyed her class
You only get a grade for online quizzes, a midterm, final, and a paper. She is an extremely hard grader on the paper. The midterm and final are not very clear and again, she is an extremely hard grader. The answers for the online quizzes are in the textbook. She's nice but I would NEVER take another class from her again.
She kept the class interested and engaged in class. Made history more of an investigation than a black&white story.
Honestly, she sucks. Her class is a joke. She divides the class in 2 sections and basically just talks to you if you have any questions of the assignments that she asked you to read. Thats it. The only lectures she gives are pointless. DON'T TAKE HER!
Don't take her online class. She makes it really hard, if you have to take her, take her regular class.
OK, she is one of the worst professors EVER! If you write a good essay/forum she will find every little detail wrong and give you a bad grade, like "you didn't give evidence" um really? how did I even write it if I didn't read the documents? There was so much that indicated that I did the work. I don't know what her problem is. Do not take her!
I struggled a lot in her class. I recommend going to class all the time because thats where you get your points. Do the readings assigned and you'll be fine. Have to read two books and do a socratic seminar on one of them. Do the online lectures that she puts up and participate a lot if you want to pass.
I don't recommend her online course. She grades very harshly, and divides the class into two sections having one section find faults in the other sections work. I did not find any of it helpful. Her grading was very picky, especially for a GenEd course. If you have the option to take a different professor i definitely would.
McGuire is a good teacher in the sense that when you ask questions she answers them well. all lectures are online and the class gets split up a lot for quizzes on the lecture. I liked her a lot because of the split classes means only going to class twice a week rather than three times, and attendance isn't mandatory anyways. Hard grader though.
I thought she was going to be a tough professor based on how her syllabus, but she wasn't too bad. I learned a lot in her class, but you have to work hard. Theres quizzes on the documents and lectures. 3 Exams with short answers, 2 paragraphs, and an essay.
She's one of the toughest graders I have ever come across! No pity points whatsoever even on essay answers. If she doesn't agree with you she will fail you. 10/10 do NOT recommend!
Professor McGuire taught an amazing class. She was very real with her students and didn't sugar coat anything. There were a few readings and a lecture to watch every week and quizzes were given almost every class on the material but if you do the work they will be easy to understand. Participation in the discussions is key in this class.
Exams included multiple choice, true/false, and essay. In order to do well on the essay - PRACTICE the prompts she gives you. She picks one and then you have to be prepared to recite from memory. My first two exams were high A's, then the last one she didn't like my essay wording. Ended with a B, tough grader on writing portion.
Professor McGuire knows what she is teaching, but she is a tough grader. Every week we had like 2 quizzes, one about the lecture, which is too long (around 1hr or more) and the other quiz about the documents (about 4-5 pages). Pay attention and participate a lot in class if you want to pass.
At first she seems to be VERY hard. Her tests are really tough and forum posts need to be very specific. After I struggled the entire semester she CURVED the exam grades and what once was a C became an A. Be very detailed on exams and forums and you'll do well. Still, hard class for the grade.
She misgraded multiple things on my exams and when asked to meet with her so she can fix it, she was never avail. It became obvious she doesn't care about her students. SOOOO many things are mistyped in her emails and on CC. All the dates are also wrong which makes it confusing when things are due. She wouldn't answer her emails for weeks.
The class was easy from the beginning but got difficult overtime. She was very nice teacher but her grading is very tough and it's hard to pass when all that's being graded in the are the quizzes and finals and only one assignment.
I always leave great reviews, but this prof was not it! Extremely tough grader and lectures are like four hours long of her just talking. Makes us point out people's flaws in their posts which affects one's self-esteem when posting. Grades towards the end of the semester Avoid class at all cost, by far worst history prof.
This is the worst professor I had in my career. I have never been graded so weirdly and without any feedback. I have never gotten less than an A in any of my courses, and I find her workload ridiculous. Do not take her. Avoid her at all costs! I lost all my interest in the class because of her grading. I wish I had listened to the reviews on here.
Offers absolutely no extra credit, assigns almost 2 hours of lecture videos outside of class time, and gives a quiz every day that you go to class. Extremely tough grader and expects your answers on tests to be so specific in detail. Definitely do NOT recommend
I am always reasonable about leaving reviews for professors because of their workload but this professor legit does nothing but assign old covid lectures and assigns quizzes every class and is solely there to make sure you do not cheat. TOUGH GRADER even if you get an answer right you don't because you have to over explain for it to be correct
good person bad teaching methods. 1-hour lecture for hw, only credits are 2 tests, 4 pop quizzes, and 1 seminar, NO EXTRA CREDIT, attendance sort of matters just because of discussion participation and pop quizzes that can't be made up unless you have receipts for medical issues, car accidents, and other life hurdles. class schedule changes weekly
Tough grader who assigns old COVID lectures and quizzes every class. Grading is confusing with minimal feedback. Lectures are long and cover a lot of material. Try using unstuck AI and the textbook to supplement. Avoid this class if possible.
