The calss is alright, she doesnt really do much to improve your writing though, but overall its pretty easy if you do all the assigments.

For anyone considering an intersting course, take Burley. She makes the topic so interesting that the time seems to fly when you're in class. Her assignments actually help you become a better writer.

She's opinionated, likes to pick on students in sarcastic kind of way, and looking for sophisticated writing. If you know how to write WELL, youll do fine. If you write like you just got out of high school, youre screwed. No tests, just papers and in class writing assignments.

I thought Burley was great. She was always encouraging and made class fun with her "sarcastic remarks". The texts that she has you read are very interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone. To all those who complained about the grades on their papers...SHE LET'S YOU RE-WRITE THEM!!!!!

It's a shame that so many negative people get onto these websites... my experience with her has been fantastic. She's interesting and makes class engaging. You get graded on your final portfolio which you spend the semester building. Take Creative Writing with her; it's her favorite class to teach, and it definitely shows.

I had her for ENG 106 too. I loved her! She's a great teacher and I learned a lot from her. The class is small so you get to know your classmates and her very well. Her grading is straight forward and easy to get extra credit. She elevated my writing style by emphasizing the "to be" verbs and taking them out when I could. She's great!

Great professor and she's really nice. Below a lot of people may say that she's vague, but I think that's the point of the class. She wants you to make the prompts your own. I thought the freedom of writing what I want to write with a few guidelines was quite refreshing compared to AP english in high school. Not boring and not strict at all.

I think she's calmed down on the "to be" verb pet peeve; she only doesn't like it when the use of it can be avoided. She doesn't do a portfolio so you're not crunched for time at the end of the semester. Interesting topics...small class so you become acquainted with her and classmates easily. Not a bad class at all.

Definitely a fun class. My writing got so much better because of practice and her advice. Class isn't too hard, but one thing that annoyed me is she expects you to write HER way--I had to totally revamp my writing style to fit her preferences. She also plays favorites. Like I said though, my writing improved a lot, so I feel like it was worth it.

Such a wonderful teacher and my entire class loved her. She is always willing to help, open to class discussions, and will let you have fun in between work. Fair grader and appreciates when you put in the effort. Worth taking

Very sweet. Grades your paper and leaves room for corrections in order to receive a higher grade. A fun, entertaining class. Lots of work but nothing out of this world, and not too difficult either. Go to class, do your homework, and write your papers.. you'll be fine. She's awesome, definitely recommend her class.

She was a very nice professor. Gives a lot of readings and gives extra points for participating in class. Only three essays and some extra assignments, but those are short and easy. Liked the class, and if you participate in class and put effort in your writing its an easy A.

I liked the class...lots of poems & short stories and we have to share them outloud or with a group but it's helpful! The class becomes close because we are always sharing. She gives feedback and lets you rewrite poems & stories that aren't A material. The class is actually fun and interactive! Good class...I'd recommend her teaching style! Take.

AMAZING teacher--she made the class actually interesting and engaging. We peer-reviewed our papers in class which was very helpful. I'm not a great writer by any means but I got an A on every paper. Professor Burley is great. She is engaging and is dry fun to talk to. Try to make sure that you have some kind of relationship with her or just chat with her, and she will love you. The more she likes you the easier her class is. You don't have to be good at English, she is very easy to ask for help if you need it and will give extensions.

I really enjoyed her class and I took her ENG106 class the following semester. There is a good amount of busy work during class but it's not that bad. For essays, she does peer review the whole week before it's due and if you get below a C she allows a rewrite. She is looking for specific ideas in the essays, but if you talk to her she's helpful.

She is tougher than the usual english teacher and has a weird grading style however she allows students to do revisions and is very helpful with helping you meet her expectations. She includes a few assignments that require students to use video and photo editing services. She is very nice, really enjoys it when you participate and gives EC.

Although her assignments can be a bit tough, she truly cares about her students and gives many opportunities to receive help and revisions. She can be a great advocate for students who respect her and get to know her.

She is TRULY an AWESOME Creative Writing professor! She writes what you need to do better on your papers very clearly for you to utilize to not make the same mistakes on your future assignments for her! She was one of the very few individuals I have met in my life who honored and ALWAYS encouraged me to follow my passion! VERY caring as well!

Really nice woman and excellent teacher. You do have to work for your grade but she lets you re-do almost all assignments to get an A or above.

LOVED Melissa and her class. She has 3 main essay's and as long as you pay attention and are on top of your work you will pass. She gives many opportunities for revisions and she's a very nice person to talk to. She makes sure to form relationships with her students. Take her class! I learned a lot.

Before taking this class I was so excited to never take an English class but after having Burley I am actually sad to be done with her class. There is a very fair amount of work and you can do revisions on all the papers for a better grade. She deserves a higher rating on here than she has. She cares about her students and what she's teaching.

I really enjoyed her class; she is a little strict on certain things, such as being on time and always attending class; participation really matters. However, she uses a non-grading based system, so if you do the assignment you get a point no matter what (super helpful). Overall, she was really helpful and allowed revisions for all the papers.

I hated english until I took this class. You are guaranteed an A if you show up to class, occasionally participate, and do the assignments. There are 3 essays but they are so easy. She builds up to each essay and gives you so much time to write them. She also holds your hand throughout the class. Super easy and enjoyable.

Melissa is the best writing teacher I've ever had at UM! I took her in WRS 105 and I am taking her again for 106. Her grades are based on points and you can redo any assignment to get a better grade, so it is really easy to get an A in the class. The extra credit opportunities are really easy. We talk about fun topics and meditate. She's the best.

She taught me so much about my writing and how to write so much better. She's the best writing professor at the U. She loves when people participate in her class and give their opinion on the topics. She cares a lot about her students and want them to succeed in their writing.

Definitely take her, she cares about your mental health. She is very understanding if you tell her before hand. Attendance is mandatory but her class is never boring.

Great Professor! Even though she does try to bring her political views in the class, she does truly try to bring the best writing in students. She's very understanding of any medical or emergency situations if you turn in work late.

Melissa was a really great professor making me a better writer by far. She gives unlimited attempts for rewrites for papers, and grades the paper on credit or no credit, no letter grades are given. Everyone has to do revisions even if you get credit. And she's very specific on papers and assignments so just make sure you listen to the directions.

This class was fairly easy. Melissa teaches everyone how to be a better writer and offers unlimited attempts to revise your paper to get credit. I didn't love how she tried to bring her own political and personal views to the class, but other than that I really enjoyed the class.

One of the best professors I had this semester. Entire class is ungraded, and graded on completion and effort. In order to get an A, you must complete an extra 4 1-2 page papers (really easy trust). 3 papers throughout semester. 1 focused on discourse communities, 2 on art. She brings cookies to class sometimes!

Show up to class. Cannot be late or absent more than 3 times, or else you wont get an A in the class. She gives many chances to revise your essay and she is always available to help and jump start your brain if you have writers block. She is very helpful, and she actually made learning fun!

Best English professor I've ever had. If you work hard and try your best, she will like you. She is always looking out for her students and wants the best for them. She will challenge you to be a better version of yourself, and that is how I truly grew as a person and with my writing. I highly recommend taking her class.

She is the sweetest professor ever. She is sooooo wise and I genuinely learned so much about writing. You are able to write about really anything and she gives great feedback.

She knows what shes talking about, offers help on the essays which arent that hard, also lets you revise them and clearly shows what you should fix. Only thing is she brought politics just a tiny bit into her class but overrall she cares for her students mental wellbeing. Overall solid prof.
