The class was like a guessing game. But overall it was pretty easy, considering i never studied and wrote my essays last minute style-e
womken in the media is the focus of the course and she is an excellent lecturer. She has complete control of the class. She encourages people to talk, and the material is interesting, including the reading and assignments.
I thought Dr. C was awesome. The only problem that she has a very east-coast sense of humor which means she is extremly sarcastic, and some people may interpret that as being mean or degrading. But she made lectures fun and interesting.
She was my sponsor for 899. Great support, enthusiasm and feedback. She was excellent in guiding me through a tough project without getting stuck in details. Wonderful to talk to and work with on a 1:1 basis.
i like dr. camacho. i loved her lectures and i don't think i've ever taken som many notes. i did write the essays at the last minute, and i probably won't remember any of this next year. she's still a super teacher!
It was hard to tell what she wanted us to leave the classroom knowing. She would point blank tell someone answer "a" is wrong, and then turn right around and say that the answer to her question is, in fact, "a". I also felt like she stretched the truth a lot to fit the outline of her lectures.
If you're into sarcasm, go ahead and take her course. I thought she was completely rude. Interesting lectures half the time, but her personality ruined it for me and many others.
INTERESTING CLASS! Take it! Its fuN!
watched a lot of tv, tests were easy, essays were a bit harder! fun class overall!
Camacho's 370 class was very unclear, i never quite knew what she expected in her coursework of us and i was not the only one.i took BECA 470 concurrently with 370, a class required before taking 470, and recieved a better grade in the latter...you do the math.
Easy class that will get you 3 units while sitting on your ass watching tv. dont look too hard into anything said though. and watch out for some of those essays. she can be a hard grader.
Good teacher. Enjoyed the class.
it was difficult to tell which notes were important and which weren't... it was also unclear what we were supposed to say in our papers. she's funny and nice, but i haven't watched tv the same since, though...

ok, i'm sure she's a nice lady and all, bu tthe way she talks just drives me crazy!!!! the says "mm kay" after everything she says mm kay. it's the most annoying habbit ever. and she takes tv WAY to seriously!!!
This class was very unclear. If you just like to watch tv i wouldn't suggest taking the class, cause you can very comfortably watch tv, you have to pay close attention and analyze everything. That aspect ruined the watching tv in class part, it wasn't that fun. I wouldn't really suggest this class.
Very good teacher. Makes class fun and interesting. Is and easy grader as well.
Camacho was an interesting teacher who you can tell knows her stuff. She kept the class fun and as long as you take notes and go to class you will pass with flying colors. This class counts as a critical thinking course and is fun too! I suggest that anyone who has the opportunity to take this class does so.
I found this class to be really interesting. The teacher is funny and keeps you interested. She likes to scare you when it comes to her grading but she's actually a really easy grader. It helps to go to every class because you never know when she is going to show a tv show in class.
She was a great professor and very funny, takes a little while to get used to but good at what she does. Come to class because a majority of the tests are based on viewings in class and you get a bonus 25 points on a random day for showing up... good teacher, fun class!
The class was really interesting. She made sound like it was going to be a lot harder than it was, but if you just go to class and pay attention it was pretty easy.
She's okay! She's really sarcastic and sometimes makes you feel stupid. But make sure that you go to every class and take notes. She shows pretty cool tv shows during class. She's really helpful! You learn a lot from her. Oh! make sure you read what she assignes because if there is no participation she will get really annoyed and pissed!
I forgot to turn in a couple of the reports but did EVERYTHING ELSE ON TIME. Even the people who didn't get to do the discussions got to do a makeup. I didn't even though I turned in my resume, glowing evaluation, did my discussions, midterm report, EVERYTHING ON TIME. I got "no credit."

her class was ok, i just had a problem with her attitude. I emailed her asking for help on an assignment addressing her as "professor camacho" and she rudely replied to my email telling me that her name is "doctor camacho" not professor. she came off as snobby to me and unhelpful.

She constantly asks people to answer her questions when we as students obviously don't know, that being the reason we took the class. Her command of the English language might be good enough for daily use, but for teaching she is just confusing. The worst was when she gave several different, CONTRADICTORY explanations of Point of View. Avoid her.
By far one of the most annoying professor I've had. After taken her class, I feel relieved that i haven't run into any professor like her. The material is fairly easy if u pay attention in class. but my goodness i can't stand her voice and the way she treats the class as if everyone's still in high school. ANNOYING!!
totally awesome teacher. she comes off as a bit crazy at first but her teaching was the most rewarding i've ever had. she gives pleeenty of extra credit. she doesnt like slackers, so take part in discussions and let her kno u r interested. she has a lot to teach and is really nice/funny once you get to know her. i highly recommend teh class!
i really got to enjoy her class towards the end. it's challenging yet rewarding. come to class and write notes and you've got a good grade. i didn't look at the book much and it didn't really matter. it's confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it!
Dr. Camacho is a really good professor. She asks students to be active in their learning so it can be difficult to understand the material right off the bat. I absolutely loved this class. I learned so much and I'm not even a beca major. The writing assignments aren't difficult and she gives out lots of extra credit.
camacho is probably the best professor i have ever had. very fair, very true to her word. lectures do not get boring, plus you get to watch some good tv. class is challenging, but it's about tv, so even the papers are fun to do.
She tries to scare everyone the first day, and the concepts are really hard to grasp at first. But this ended up being one of my favorite classes. I never realized how interesting television could be. The viewing assignments she makes out to be really hard, but if you follow instructions they are fairly easy, TAKE THIS CLASS! dont give up!
She's intimidating. However, I love her sarcasm and humor. I really enjoyed the class. It's a bit challenging and sometimes following instructions was difficult, but still, loved the class. ^.^ You could use a binder but I suggest using a notebook for this class. You turn in almost everything on ilearn, so it's convenient. lecture = helpful, so go.
I was scared, but fared better than I expected. If you pay attention, you can do well. Simple as that.
She's very energetic
shes a feminist. dont expect to share an opposing view in the class as many students who take this class are also liberal feminists. it gets annoying FAST. shes rough on you if you dont do the readings and there a lot of them. the good thing is theres no final, its a semester-long "project" (10, 1-page papers). 5 addtl. papers and take home midterm
camacho. wow. scary at first, but she really knows her stuff. i disagree with whoever said you can't have an opposing view, i think she welcomed disagreement in discussion. plus, there are a lot of readings because she doesn't do quizzes and multiple tests. the papers are challenging, but worth it. the take home mid term, even more challenging, and
loved the class!!!! I really want to be a BECA major now due to her class...very opinionated and sarcastic, very funny too!! kept me up, minus the frequent use of energy drinks! Viewings in class were always the best and the lectures HOTT!!! Take this class if you really want to be in the entertainment industry
class was very interesting.watched alot of shows in class and had interesting discussions. one big paper due. do the reading and come to class in order to pass the class.
one of the best teachers i ever had at SFSU.
Very "anal" about written work and her dry sarcastic humor is only the kind of "humor" that is amusing to only herself!
Bipolar. Condescending. Egomaniac. Territorial.
She doesn't really teach, it's more of you guessing and pretending to get the material by yourself. She is funny yet strange/mean at the same time, bipolar-yes. This class requires A LOT of work, if your a slacker-you won't do well. I worked really hard and it payed off, if you can't write-then don't take the class. Textbook is terrible. Difficult.
Unpleasant personality. Couldn't care less about her students. Completely hung up on procedure. This class was hard because she would quiz on obscure material or assign papers on subjects we hadn't covered in class yet. And the textbook is unreadable. Avoid.
Best Class Ever! Class is incredibly intimidating at first.its a really tough course with really long writing assignments. Camacho is really cut-throat. But Camacho is incredibly knowledgeable and talking to her after class i learned she really cares about her students. her lectures are very well prepared and entertaining.
I don't know why she even works here. She a terrible teacher who hates life. She makes things harder than it has to be. If you email her, hopefully she response but most of time its not helpful advice. She's a mean control freak. And a passed her class.
Clearly hates her students. It's like she wants people to fail the class. One mistake and you'll receive no credit, even for minor details. And I passed. Worst professor I've ever had.
this was one of the best classes ive taken here. she is really intimidating but you learn a lot and its interesting. ended up getting a B+. its hard to get at first but once you get the hang of the concepts it gets easier. got Ds on the first couple papers but ended up getting an A on the last big one. definitely recommend this class.
One of the best teachers I have had ever. She's intimidating but entertaining and you can tell she really knows what she's talking about.
Camacho is pretty intimidating and tough, but you definitely learn something after each class. She is a hard grader, but she offers a lot of extra credit. She is funny, but don't piss her off by screwing around in class. If you need help go to her office hours or email. Overall a good class, but if you want something easy this isn't the class for you.
If you do not pass her class that is on you. You go to the class 1 time a month for 50 min! and all you have to do is turn in ten 2 paragraph assignments. So easy. she treats you like an adult and exspects you to accountable for your actions. Duh! were in collage I loved her. She is a bit harsh, but thats life
Camacho is a difficult teacher, but don't let that scare you. She knows what she's talking about and is more than willing to help. She cares about the people that care about the class. So in other words, if you are looking for a class to sit back, relax, and screw around in, this is definitely not your class. Overall though, she's a good teacher.

She's pretty tough professor, but man does she know her stuff. She challenges her students to understand the material themselves. The class is rough but the tests are pretty basic. If you study, you are ok. The writing assignments, however, are tough at first. The final paper at the end of the semester is actually fun and most get A's on it.
She definitely seems to hate her students. It's almost as if she just wants people to fail the class. One of the worst professors I've ever had.
Probably the MOST interesting classes at SF STATE. This class is pretty hard i'm not gonna lie. In the beginning, i thought it was a ll about watching tv, but its not. She def knows what she's talking about and is very organized. I learned so much about TV and it totally makes me look at it differently. I REALLY REALLY reccommend this class.TAKE IT
WORST TEACHER EVER. She is so rude and automatically assumes that the students are slackers. For example, a student raised his hand to answer a question and because he said the wrong thing, she now singles him out and says he "doesn't take the class seriously" which I thought was completely uncalled for. I now decided to never raise my hand.
First let me say this, Camacho REALLY has extensive knowledge of this subject and you will learn alot from her. I never looked at T.V. the same way again lol With that said, her teaching style is HORRENDOUS. This woman is brash, hasty, rude at times, and she seems to have it out for the students. She just isn't a nice person. I dont recommend her.
took class cause really had no other choice in terms of what i could get. class was actually not to bad, teacher will call people at times and has an attitude, but it made the class interesting and it wasn't hard to pay attention. just dont raise your hand. she acts like she always is going to grade super hard, but really she's fairly easy
Dr. Camacho is definitely intimidating but her lectures are very entertaining. She has a good sense of humor which makes class go by quickly. She does have a bad attitude at times but it's probably because she takes her craft seriously.
this class had potential because its WGS and BECA. However she has a very fixed way of seeing things and doesn't allow for students to come to their own conclusions. I am often surprised at how rude she is to her TA. She lashes out on students who disagree. She seems to not care about her students. if you are WGS there are better classes to take.
she's chill
Camacho is an very knowledgeable, and passionate about her subject. She has an amazing sense of humor that made getting up at ungodly hours easier to bear. However, if you are taking this class as a GE and are not a BECA or COMM major you are going in with a HUGE disadvantage. Theory sure isn't my thing, but I did learn a lot from this class.
Class is pretty fun but she can be very rude. I mean it's almost awkward to be in the room how rude she can be. Pretty easy class and if you like television shows the class will probably be interesting.
Difficult class but very interesting. Readings every week, only 2 tests the entire semester but worth 50% of grade. Hard grader. I mean it's an interesting class and you have to work your butt off, ended with a B-. Go to office hours and she will help alot. Easy to get ahold via email. Lecture every class, watch television about every other class.
Yes she has a strong personality and some people may perceive her as "rude," but she is really just serious about what she does and doesn't suffer fools gladly. She's a pretty good lecturer and wants you to read the book. She's actually really cool to talk to and she'll give the class candy sometimes!
A difficult grader and does not clarify what she wants out of a paper. She gave us 5-6 writing assignments and a 10 page portfolio as a final. She does not give directions well and all of her papers had very broad topics. Expects you to apply readings which usually don't relate to anything she talks about in class.
Camacho tends to be intimidating at first, but she's really nice & fair. She gives clear lectures in which I was able to interpret well. The class consisted of 4 papers, 1 take-home midterm, and 1 20 pg. portfolio final. If you just follow directions and critically apply readings/lectures, u will do well. I got an A in the class.
This class was awesome!! It was definitely not an easy class because the subject was very challenging and it required the learning of a completely different way of writing. Dr. Camacho can be sarcastic sometimes but she really knows her stuff. She cares about her students and always is available to answer questions. I definitely recommend her.
This class was hard and Dr. Camacho is not a difficult teacher. Just pay attention and do the reading then you will learn. I got an A in her class. I highly recommend her but if you are not serious about doing the work, then you won't pass the class. She can be intimidating, but she's a strong idnividual.
She holds high expectations from her students, but if you really try to do all the readings, show up to class and stay engaged, you'll do well. Your grade consists of: 3 in class essays, 1 exam, 1 10pg paper, and participation. She always promptly responded my emails quickly, and was helpful with all my questions
Definitely puts on a hard exterior in class but for good reason. 1-on-1 she's totally different & EXTREMELY helpful. She's an acquired taste for sure; hated her at first but love her now. If you're on her good side (by making sure you do the work) you're golden. If you don't & you're highly sensitive, I wouldn't recommend her. I think she's awesome
Melissa is a pretty bad teacher. She goes out of her way to try to trip students up on midterms/in-class assignments. She also likes to spring sneak assignments on students. She is unclear, and frequently misunderstands/misuses the very concepts she is supposed to be teaching.
I would never recommend this class to anyone...EVER. There are only 2 assignments you have to turn in, but this is not your typical GE Segment III class. This lady is a pain in the ass. Makes us do 20 page readings online. Useless. The only nice thing is she gave us candy during the holidays.
I don't understand why she has bad reviews. She is an AMAZING professor. Whoever doesn't like her is probably too lazy to put the effort in the class that is required to better you as a person. Also tip for passing: E-mail her constantly whenever you have questions or to look at your assignments. She will do EVERYTHING to help you.
Camacho will baby you and give you bull criticism. She will take the time to thoroughly go through your work and really try to dissect it. This is not a class for those wanting an easy A, but I can assure you she will do everything to help you reach that level. You get what you put into it. Take advantage of someone grading at an industry standard.
Camacho is tough on her students, but it really pays off. You will be a better writer after this class. Follow her directions, turn things in on time, and you can get an A. Be aware: you will have to put in a LOT of hours to get that A, but it's possible and totally worth it.
Tough but fair. Often snarky but goofy at times. Her writing class is not an easy ride, but you will learn a lot. She gives extensive feedback and never stops challenging you. If you're thin-skinned or afraid of feminism, you'll have a problem with her, but if you're open-minded and ready to work, she's golden.
This class is tough and Camacho is not joking around. You have to pay attention, participate, and learn. She will give you touch assignments with even tougher criticisms. You need to do the work to get the A. You need to learn how to write and Camacho is going to teach you. If you're serious about wanting to learn, take this class. I loved it.
I was so so so confused by this class for the first half of the semester. I thought I would get a bad grade, but Dr. Camacho is amazing and nice and helpful and shared her passion with the class. It ended up being an eye-opening class for me, and one of the only classes that really held my interest. Thank you Dr. Camacho!
She's the type of teacher to ask the class for definitions of terms, and unless we recited exactly what she had written on her little class-for-that-day itinerary/notes, we would be incorrect. She has a little bit of an ego problem. I don't suggest taking her class unless you plan on being there/taking copious notes. Final was 50 T/F.
Worst professor I've ever had in my entire life. Don't believe me? Go see for yourself. I told you so.
Camacho grades based on industry standards, which are tough! It seemed unfair to me at first that the expectation was so high for my first media writing class. Once I got to know her, it's clear that she will look for progress over perfection at the end of the semester. She will help you out but you must be willing to work hard!
If I could go back I would have taken this class with someone easier because I don't think the education outweighs the stresses. The class is the "Camacho Show". Expect lots of ego stroking. I found her feedback unhelpful and left the class thinking that I didn't learn anything that some googling and writing practice couldn't teach me.
This class is an easy A if you're looking for something to boost your GPA. Did I agree with her opinions? Nope. But it doesn't matter. All you have to do is regurgitate the readings onto your paper, include proper citations and then bam, you get an A. But that aside, she actually is a very sweet woman if you ever go talk to her during office hours
AVOID AT ALL COSTS Never has a professor taken so much pleasure in the failure and misfortune of students. This class is for people who enjoy being torn to shreds by a professional critic. Hours of hard effort for less-than-passing grades. Email her or schedule time for "help" and get scolding and ridicule. She should not be a teacher.
I've only been in her class for a couple of weeks now, but I really like her. The key is to not take anything personally; she WILL call you out in class, she WILL make you feel stupid, but she's teaching classes about people who want to get into media, which is an industry where we will have to face rejection often. I recommend taking her class.
SHE IS ARROGANT AND UTTERLY ANNOYING!
I regret taking this class so much. She hands out 0%s on assignments like it's nothing. I spent hours and a lot of effort on that and I get a 0? The penalty should not be that high. Also she used "okay?" excessively. I counted 64 "okay?"s in 15 minutes one day. It drove me insane. It was so distracted. Don't take this teacher
Tough grader, intimidating. Exams are 25% of grade, with tricky and obscure questions. Concepts and theories almost indistinguishable, similar roots and assumptions (Marxism, postmodernism). Lectures seldom detail the differences, or how to apply them in writing, (all of the coursework, lots of writing .) FOLLOW HER INSTRUCTIONS, READ, SPEND TIME.
She will waste your time on lectures you will never used for class assignments. Her grading is extremely difficult and incredibly particular. She hands out zeros like candy dispite any effort. She will not hesitate giving you a 0 for a 15 page paper (midterm) even extra credit. Theres a total of 4-5 essays in this class . Dont take this class!
Camacho is overall a solid professor. However, she does come off a bit harsh and intimidating. DO THE READINGS! Study well for both the midterm and final exam. Start the research paper EARLY. The 10-15 page paper is due before the final exam. Yes, she has both a final paper and exam. Enjoyable class overall but don't expect it to be all that easy.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. EVER. Camacho is awful. I just want to share one of the many annoying things she will do when grading you. If you forget one little aspect of the assignment, she refuses to grade it and gives you an automatic F for the entire thing. never explains anything. do yourself a favor and never take this class.
You will DEFINITELY learn something. TV genres & how it relates back to society. A LOT of reading and writing but it's worth it! Helped me get into the habit of meeting assignment deadlines. Assignments: Reading brief, 3 questions: summary, cultural conversations, & your questions about the reading. 7-8 paper on ANY TV show that we haven't covered.
Class notes are important for exams and tv theory paper. Weekly readings of about 20-60 pages, with a 1-2 page Reading Brief due each week. Refers to readings in weekly lectures. You will learn something if you apply yourself.
One of the best professors I've ever had
She is harsh on citations but for good reason. There is a lot of great material she goes over and answers everyone during the lectures. That being said she does belittle students and make them feel stupid which is mostly why I was scared to participate. What other people said about the ego stroking… very true. Yikes. Wouldn't recommend at all.
