Took Engineering 1000 with her. Great teacher and really pushed students to get involved on campus. Dr.Collins was really nice and helped me get connected to some undergrad research even as a freshman with questionable capabilities. I didn't go to very many lectures, but the lab was required. Overall an easy course with a lot of assignments.
If you fumble a few of your assignments your grade is ruined. No compromises with Melissa. Nope, no can do.
The intro to engineering classes have been an overall waste of time and money. It's not a difficult course but the lectures aren't useful or interesting. The only positive I've found within the course is that the mentor groups can be helpful, but are not worth the tuition money to be required for every engineering student for two semesters.
Engineering 1000 and 1050 were the easiest classes I've ever taken. Lectures are long and boring, labs are simple but time consuming. Peer Mentorship was the highlight of these two classes. Overall, this class was mediocre and a waste of time and money.
Engineering 1000 and 1050 are so dull and unnecessary. Dr. Collins is very harsh for such an entry-level class. As long as you show up and do your work it is an easy A.
For 1050, show up to your labs and be nice to your TA. If you do these, you will get one of the easier A's in your college career. If you put a tiny bit of effort in, this class is very easy.
This class is insanely mickey mouse. Do not go to any lectures, there is a quiz every lecture day that can be figured out if you are not an idiot. Every week theres a lab where you do things you would do in grade school, we literally made a popsicle stick bridge 3 weeks in. You also have to meet with a peer mentor every week which is not bad.
She is like a relative that you only see once a year and that is definitely enough. That being said, the class was very easy as long as you turn in work.
The most useless class ever taught by someone that talks down to you. This review doesn't even matter because it is a required class...
Engineering 1050 is a generally pointless class with unhelpful lectures and incredibly elementary labs. It feels like a stem summer camp that you pay college tuition for. The upside is that it's very easy and that the professor and TAs are generally fair/reasonable.
Whoever wrote that Engineering 1000 had easy labs apparently pissed the Collinator off because every lab in her class now has us going over end-level Engineering concepts with no guide or instructions. She just expects us to do it.
Pointless lectures and a waste of time
Engineering 1000 is the most useless class to take. The labs are so entry level that they are below entry level. Lectures and labs are both pointless, you essentially just learn the names of different flavors of engineering.
You need to take the course, but drop this class from the curriculum or something, please. She talks down to students and is a terrible teacher. Get her fired dawg.
Dr. Collins was a required class for me but it was not one that was as harsh as people say. The grading was easy and there was rarely any real homework unless you didn't finish your labs. Fine lectures and somewhat interesting speakers depending on your engineering.
She's a fine professor. The class itself is extremely useless and should not be required... but it is. Assignments are easy, but if you don't do them on time you wont get any extensions. She replies to emails super quick. Your grade is mostly just in the hands of your TA, but dont be afraid to ask for regrades on lab reports
Mellissa Collins is a difficult professor that likes to ramble and is very stingy about her rules. Her lab sections have too much tedious work. For an introduction level class I did not learn anything about engineering disciplinaries that I could not have found from Wikipedia. The class expected too much for being a 100 level 1 credit hour class.
There is no reason an assignment should be due at 8PM. And to add on LOCKING it until 3PM the day before? Some of us have a life outside of college. Grow up Melissa.
Most of this class is a waste of time, unless you have never ever taken any kind of science or math class in your life. If you selected engineering as a major, this class will be a waste of time for you, and I truly hope they remove it from the list of required classes for engineers. Busy work is the only thing I can say.
L professor
ENG 1000 & 1050 is such a waste of time and money and shouldn't be a requirement if you know what field you want to go into. Also, you have to put so much time and effort into assignments just for them to not be worth much. Also, they give you barely any instructions on how to complete labs, yet they expect you to know what to do.
Professor Collins needs to refine her teaching style and lectures. The way she conducts lectures makes it seem like she thinks that this class is below her. On top of this, she can be hard to get a hold of in a timely manner. Her decisions regarding class policy matters are inconsonant and can be frustrating. The class itself better than 1000.
This class was very annoying so many little assignments with no benefits. Many assignments due at odd times of the day which were hard to keep track of. Just the most useless class I've ever taken. It was really easy though.
Melissa spent the first lecture fear-mongering all of the students by introducing really strict and unnecessary rules (all papers must be turned in without any wrinkles, must have good handwriting, strict formatting requirements). In reality, we didn't turn in any physical papers. Assignment due dates & times were horrible and had lots of busy work
This class was so easy that they had to put so much filler to keep us busy. You don't have to go to lectures (there may be assignments linked to the lecture) but the weekly group assignments were iffy. If you have a good group it's fine. TA's can be hard on grading and follow the assignment rules precisely. There are also peer group meetings.
Professor has deadlines at random times during the day and not accept late work. Does not round grade minuscule amounts.
She doesn't ever teach the material that is covered in assignments, and unlike other professors seems to be rooting against her students.
Everything has weird deadlines, she never teached anything in lecture that is part of the assignments, assignments themselves have little or no clear instruction and are pretty janky, and the whole class is supposed to be like introduction to different engineering majors but theres only basic level information and you dont really learn anything.
Uninteresting, poorly designed class that requires labs that are a complete waste of time. The labs are uninteresting, tedious, and time consuming. I've taken 2 similar classes to this in other degree programs and this one is by far the least beneficial. This class makes the engineering program at Mizzou seem like a joke.
It is ridiculous that this is a required class. This professor never teaches or goes over the assignments, and instead leaves it to apathetic TAs. Assignments include obvious software issues and contradictory information. There is a lack of communication from both Melissa Collins and the TAs, and homework is unnecessarily tedious.
She is just the worst. She doesn't give her own lectures. She doesn't have set office hours. She doesn't email people back. She does not care about your grade. She makes me furious.
Read the reviews. Everything everyone says about her is 100% true. Absurd deadlines, course is useless, and it seems like she almost tries to hide assignments. I read on here "it seems like she wants her students to fail." that is completely accurate. Easiest class in the world, and she complicates it to the max.
waste of time
This class equates to highway robbery, it takes my money and it gives nothing in return. Worst of all it takes the one thing I can't replace, my time.
You do not learn anything you can actually apply to engineering. It is nothing but busy work. She does not respond to emails in a timely manner at all. Assignments sometimes have confusing deadlines and all assignments are due at 8pm. This class is nothing but a waste of time and money. There are also mandatory weekly meetings outside of class.
All the other reviews are true. Weird deadlines. The class basically taught by TA's, department heads, and guest speakers who work in the industry. There are meetings outside of normal class hours that are required. If missed, you lose points, EVEN IF YOU HAVE A TEST DURING THE SAME HOURS. Make friends in it so you don't invest too much time in it.
Horrible class and a complete waste of time and money. Attendance for labs is required, and the labs have incomprehensible instructions, but are graded harshly. Lectures are skippable if you can get the answers to her lecture assignments. Skip if possible, the lectures are just random industry guest speakers, and Melissa never actually teaches.
Absolutely the worst, long labs, tons of busy work. Doesn't teach anything in her lectures. Not nice and makes assignments due early in the day with no late work accepted. Pointless class.
Waste of time, makes you come to pointless lectures. Makes work due early in the day for no reason, and refuses to accept late work.
Literally the worse class - and it's required for all engineering majors! Assignments have the most inconvenient deadlines. Don't be surprised if you miss some assignments - why are assignments due at 8:00 PM? Genuinely why?! Don't even get me started on the lectures. They're completely pointless for the vast majority of students.
Extremely poorly structured class with assignments due at 8 pm for no apparent reason. The premise of Engineering 1000 is to introduce students to different engineering disciplines which is noble. However the actual labs were extremely confusing with poorly written incoherent directions, to the point where the TAs did not even know how to do them.
I am so sorry, engineers. All the other negative reviews are true. All her policies are intentional pitfalls poorly disguised as a way to "get you used to college." It is by far my easiest class but by far my lowest grade. It's a required class, but useless. You're not graded on engineering but simply on how well you can navigate this mess.
The professor gives lecture assignments irrelevant to what the guest speakers discuss. There are several assignments a week with different due dates, all due at 8 pm. Assignments are not mentioned at the beginning of the semester, and no late work is allowed. Labs malfunction and teach you nothing relevant to the field.
Expensive textbook for simple 5 minute assignments, you're not really learning anything new in the lectures. Everything covered in this class is like stuff you looked up on YouTube in high school before you actually considered going to college to be an engineer. Lab assignments barely give context to how to assignments should be done.
Doesn't even teach during her lectures, yet invites guest speakers to give their entire life story for an entire lecture, which is irrelevant to the poorly explained lab assignments. The class makes me want to switch to any other major. Along with mandatory lab attendance, assigns random "mentoring groups" where you meet once a week and do nothing.
Awful lectures filled with guest speakers that have nothing to do with the labs, paired with lecture assignments meaning lectures are pretty much mandatory. Labs are hard to follow and very tedious and grades can very much depend on who is in your group. Assignments are due at 8 PM for whatever reason and absolutely zero late work is accepted.
For one of my most expensive classes, assignments and labs were poorly written, cryptic, out of date, and in general of shockingly low quality. Talked down on students and, especially if you try to fix an issue with your grade, is extremely snarky and rude. Mistakes in assignments made me feel cheated out of a grade. Avoid if at all possible.
Prof. Collins rarely lectures to the class. She instead invites guest speakers to give a completely irrelevant lecture, even though the lectures have (unofficially) mandatory attendance. The labs for the class are badly written, teach you nothing, and very tedious, also with mandatory attendance when it could be done at home. She just doesn't try.
Class is painfully boring. Labs were fun, peer mentoring was helpful, but all the work felt like "busy work." Attendance is counted by lecture quizzes but you can BS most of it. Don't spend too much time on this class, usually they give out good grades for most anything in labs, plus its only one credit hour. Easy class but kinda a waste of time.
People dislike Collins but her class isn't actually that bad if you just do your work. The lectures can be interesting depending on the guest speaker. Make sure you pay attention enough to answer the in-lecture assignment. The labs are fine, mostly online simulations, lab report due weekly but it's easy to pump out. She has easy extra credit too.
Professor Collins will not respond to an email if you refer to her as "Mrs. Collins." She is arrogant and seems like she is always on a power trip. The class is very easy but is the most boring thing in the world. You don't learn anything in this class. Unfortunately, this class is required to be an engineer. One of the most annoying professors.
Attendance at the labs is mandatory. The lab reports suck, and there is way too much homework for this to be a 1 credit hour class. You don't need to show up to the lectures, just get the lecture assignments from friends who did go or rotate week to week with your friends, sharing the answer each week.
Was an excess amount of homework for a one credit hour class. The labs were very poorly written and did not always work correctly. She spoke in a very condescending manor and was little to no help when problems arose with the systems she had us use.
Professor Collins structures Engineering 1050 with way too much homework. A lot of readings, a 2-hour lab, and you learn a bunch of useless things. Lab reports are supposed to be like 400 words about teamwork and other useless things. The whole class is a waste of time. For 1 credit hour, it shouldn't be that much work.
terrible professor, homework due dates are just bad, class is structured poorly. A waste of time
Gorlock the destroyer.
Never in my life have I had an encounter with a person so dedicated to wasting my time. As a winner of multiple academic awards, I can expertly say that her lectures are academically useless, however, attendance is mandatory, likely to inflate her ego due to having a full class. Also, the labs are extremely unclear and a complete waste of time.
She doesn't respond to emails and assigns way too much homework for a class that's supposed to be 1 credit hour. Overall the most useless class offered at Mizzou
This class is the biggest waste of time I've ever seen. It's engineered to waste as much of your time as possible. Enormous amounts of weekly homework, mandatory weekly meetings outside of class, a confusing and boring two hour lab in addition to useless but mandatory lectures, 1000+ word group lab reports weekly. She's impossible to contact too.
I actually enjoyed learning about the all the Engineering fields. But, Good Lord, the amount of useless dribble you have to do makes this unbearable. The labs are tedious. The online work is a chore. She's on a power trip every time she speaks. People say this is engineered (hah) to waste your time? DON'T IGNORE THEM.
might as well take the tuition cost of this class and put it on black
Massive time waster
When I got to college I thought I would be treated like an adult, but this class reminded me of middle school/high school. She treats students like children with too many superficial and assignments/rules. I got a 0 on a lab for using the restroom once. She ignores if you don't call her "DR". This class is child's level yet consumes so much time.
I would rather bash my head against a wall for an hour every week, then to take Melissa's class ever again. Bad.
The only thing you need in her lecture is an Iphone with Bloons TD 6 installed. This should keep you busy while her guest speakers yap. She never teaches herself, she thinks she is better than everyone by talking down to her students, unnecessary complicated labs I would do in middle school. mowing a lawn with nail clippers is a better use of time.
The lack of communication- in a career course completely dependent on communication- is ridiculous. No-notice lecture cancellation, nitpicky remarks towards students who wish to constructively critique/ desire explanation, lack of understanding and maturity regarding interpersonal matters- and an utter disregard towards students time. Unchecked.
So many complainers in here... I'm no exception. I was tired of being treated like a child, was told college would be different and I would be respected if i showed respect. Nope. To the multiple people who said she's on a power trip, yeah. I don't mind calling you prof. but if you dont respect me I have no choice but to like the gorlock comment.
I swear my freshman high school science class felt identical to this course. Everything from the assignments to the basic labs with overcomplicated expectations to the way the teacher talked to the students.
She once cancelled class 10 mins before the starting time and told us to join a zoom. She's also the type of professor to have an assignment due during spring break. She also just treats everyone like a child.
I am so disappointed in how much I pay for tuition and THIS is what I get. She talks down to her students, she usually has guest speakers (who can be good but usually not), and when she does speak her slides are below average. I pay her salary and this is what I get? Ridiculous
Talks down to grown adults
Listening to her talk feels like I am pouring acid in my own ears. TikTok rizz brainrot is more educational than this sorry excuse for a tuition fee. Each time that I am forced to return to the hellscape that is her class, I am reminded of the ever-impending face of death that breathes down my neck each day. This class feels like impending doom.
This is genuinely the worst class I've taken in my entire academic career. She speaks to us like we're children and has taught us absolutely nothing useful. She teaches us about teamwork and diversity as if we didn't just take a class last semester that did the same. She seems uneducated and I'm convinced she doesn't actually have a PHD.
All assignments due at 8PM on random days. Acts like her class is the most important, when this is an early level engineering course where you don't really do anything, when everyone could be studying for their calculus or physics, but she makes a ton of assignments that don't relate to the topic.
AWFUL!!!! Her lectures are pointless and the biggest waste of time. The other week she told us class was cancelled 10 minutes into class as we were all in the building and made a zoom, I joined for as soon as I figured out class was cancelled. She proceeded to give me a 0 for joining too late. I'm done
Lectures and long and extremely boring. In the syllabus there is no description of how i-clicker attendance affects your grade or even says that it is included in your grade, but you are still graded on it. Labs are pointless and just extra work, lots of teamwork. She is terrible at announcements. Overall just a waste of a class, pointless.
Terrible professor, assigns way too much homework. She structures the class so that you have a pre-lecture assignment covered in the lecture to boost her ego. Then you have to show up to lecture for an I-clicker, and then you are assigned a post-lecture assignment. I'm convinced she was lying about having a PHD. She likes to waste everyone's time.
Collins yaps for the entire lecture and mainly reads off the slides. The homework is tedious and very unnecessary and is due on random days and at random times. Labs were ok but again, tedious for no reason at all for a 1000 level class.
Like engineering 1000, Collins yaps through lecture even though she reads off the slides. Labs and homework are tedious for no reason at all and due dates are weird.
Melissa Collins was an absolutely fantastic teacher! She's always on top of her work, definitely doesn't make her ta's do all of her work, and the class overall was taught in a very academic manner. Everything you learn in this class you will use in real life! especially when learning about pronouns vs nouns! I've lied about everything)
Just as bad as Engr1000. Another waste of time and money. Once again, useless lectures, long, confusing and pointless labs, irrelevant, lengthy weekly assignments, iClicker quizzes, mandatory weekly meetings outside of class, 1000 word lab reports every week, doesn't respond to emails if you do not call her "Dr.". Assignments are also due at 8pm...
“Bunch of babies and snowflakes who never left high school here.” Major cope from the dude who paid 6000$ for a 2 hour course 💀
Extremely useless class, waste of an hour a week. The lab is whatever but the lecture is just awful. But you have to go since you never know how many points the iClicker will be worth. Just the worst
Mandatory $80 textbook that's low quality and out of date, cryptic labs that are near incomprehensible, hour of pointless "peer mentoring groups", and teacher's a giant douche; openly talks shit and will sass you in her emails if you reach out. If you want to go into engineering, best to just avoid this school so you don't have to take this class.
This class focuses more on elementary level formailties than it does with core engineering principles like basic coding, or computer designs. The labs are either middle school level, or stuff that makes literally no sense being so overcomplicated. She also treats the students (grown 18-20 year olds) like middle schoolers
"Bunch of babies and snowflakes who never left high school here" Bro just say you got paid to give her a good review💀💀. This class does jack for preparing you for the engineering world and it's a requirement that costs real money. Absolutely ridiculous class.
Just reaffirming that this class is borderline useless and a waste of time and money. It's mind-numbingly easy, all homework assignments are due at 8pm for no good reason, and all topics are just intros into things we will actually learn later, so we don't need to know them now?? Frustrating, but very doable.
Dr. Melissa Collins should not be employed at the university as she consistently shows a lack of empathy, understanding, or flexibility toward her students on deadlines. I missed a large assignment as I was in the ER and received no accommodation or any opportunity to make it up. She uses teaching as a power trip and should be fired.
Just use AI on all the assignments because despite her saying her and the TAs can recognize AI, they can't. The professor makes zero effort to help students so don't put any effort towards her. I missed one lecture assignment and it dropped my grade by 5% while labs can be skipped with zero repercussions. This class is a huge waste of time.
This class is just a power trip for Melissa. Avoid at all costs, you will learn nothing and waste your time/money. Lectures are useless, labs are poorly written and have a pointless 1000 word minimum each week, TAs are untrained and incompetent. Walking on foot to Jeff City and gambling everything you have is a better use of your time and tuition.
Emailed her asking for an extension as I was in the hospital with my grandpa. She wrote back a week later, refusing an extension, and then told me she didn't reply sooner because I "did not address her as Dr. Collins." Are we serious?
Not that bad. A little annoying and unnecessary, but if you're not getting an A regardless you should reevaluate attending university. Super easy class.
Disorganized and would not take any outside circumstances as an excuse to miss lecture. Found myself losing points often due to her disorganization and would have to often correct her. The way she has canvas set up is also often very confusing and you will have to watch for assignments due weeks in advance to the course material. Terrible...
Not a useful class at all.
I walked out of this class knowing less than when I walked in. The labs are about teamwork as if we didn't know about that already. The TAs act like they're being held hostage, lectures are so pointless, but mandatory because she throws in random i clickers to boost her ego. Also if you dont address her as "Dr" she wont respond to your email.
She states that she has a PHD, probably in eating food
Purely a busy work class. Dr. Collins is not a very likeable professor and is definitely a stickler when it comes to certain things. It's an easy A so there's not much to complain about. This class will take up entirely too much of your time and you won't gain a lot from it, but it is super easy.
She does not do a very good job explaining any of the actual work we are doing in the labs, and she could not even answer a question asked by a speaker she invited about what we were doing in our lab. It seems that she does not really monitor our assignments in any way, yet she talks down on students who don't call her professor.
1 credit hour class that takes at least 3 hours of my week every week, the class consists of busy work, everything is due at 8 pm, and no late work.
Does not teach and expects you to know everything. Also does not know what she is teaching you.
I took Dr. Collins' experimental "new" version of ENGR 1000. The class had 3-4 hours of homework, compared to the standard lecture version, which had closer to 30 minutes. She used a flipped classroom, which meant that she didn't teach anything and expected us to come to class already knowing the material.
I'm in the Matlab version of ENGR1000, which means 3-4 hours of homework each week. Collins proclaims that this is a "flipped classroom," and thus she doesn't teach whatsoever, expecting you to know and do everything independently. Avoid at all costs.
Worst professor ever. Points are rare and 3 missed points can be fatal. Demands mandatory, unearned respect and participation, and only she can dismiss class. She doesn't actually lecture, teach, or grade, yet assigns work due at 8 pm on Sunday. TAs can't help with labs because she doesn't tell them what to do either.
She has no mercy. We aren't even going to be in class next week because of vets day and she is still assigning work as if we were. I regret not going to S&T.
The class really isn't that hard, but Melissa Collins has her rating for a reason. Her attitude is really weird considering the fact that clearly no one likes her. Just stay on top of things and you will be totally fine. Just don't let this class or Melissa get under your skin.
Literally doesn't teach the class. Every single lecture is a guest speaker talking about something nobody in this freshman level intro to engineering course cares about. I watched the dude in front of me beat Minecraft in that class. She is an arrogant professor with little respect and care for students. Also doesn't take late work. 0/10.
chatgpt class. labs written by chatgpt that don't even work sometimes where you'll be required to answer questions with chatgpt and then just bsing your way through the parts of the labs. you also get to enjoy clicking through mcgraw hill assignments for 30 minutes and everything is due at 8 PM just because
Melissa Collins really isn't that bad as long as you don't actually have to talk to her or pay attention to the lectures when she is speaking. The worst part about it is that you're required to take her for two semesters. Super easy if you just do the homework. Not that bad but I still feel that I can't grade her higher than her average grade.
Do not take the "flipped" Matlab version of the class. It leads to hours of homework in comparison to the other, no actual lectures from the professor, and projects in Matlab with 0 instruction on coding or understanding of the topic. The TA's are honestly pretty sick, but it's a bit depressing watching them understand code better than Collins.
Lots of homework. You do a lot of group work and overall the class just feels like busy work. If you do not have coding experience either practice or be a fast learner. Easy grader and helpful if you have questions.
Her class is very poorly organized, and it consists solely of busy work. All of her assignments are due at 8 pm, which is inconsiderate of student's life and schedules.
Her class is full of meaningless and poorly thought out lab reports, very difficult to parse what she actually wants from you. Her TA's have no enthusiasm and they all clearly dislike her. The due dates are abysmal (they're all at 8pm) and her lectures consist of reading off of powerpoints. Also, AI is required for half the labs. Such a joke.
worst teacher I have ever had, genuinely needs to be removed from the school.
Was in the new matlab based class. No tests, lots of coding. In class assignments are all group projects. Collins was helpful to me throughout the semester. Decent amount of work for a 1000 level class, but you're given the whole week to do homework.
This class is entirely pointless. Not a single assignment was related to engineering, and they were all either 5+ years out of date or generated by AI.
Honestly, I don't understand why her ratings are so low. She is a caring teacher, and she helped us with are Robots after class. The only real negative is that the Eng 1000 and Eng 1050 feel unnecessary, as I feel most students desire to go straight to statics. It seems more like an issue of the class purpose not the professor.
This class is so pointless. Lab reports that are AI generated and have absolutely nothing to do with engineering. Course is easy A if you just turn is assignments and can follow directions
