Makes class FUN!
Fun Class, nice teacher!
Awesome teacher! Interesting class, knows her subjects, makes class enjoyable, funny. Overall, VERY cool.
Awesome teacher. Very helpful. Super smart. Really nice. Breaks it up with videos and guest speakers. Talk to her! She's interesting!
Melissa is a really great person. She's funny, interesting, and makes coming to class fun. She's easy to listen to, and relates things to real life. her tests are based on her lectures, which are easy to pay attention to. she shows movies and has speakers come in. Take her if you can!
She tries to make classes as fun as possible. She is pretty easy, all you have to do is read the book and write the notes off the board.
funny, good material, fast class
very fun class, her tests are based on the lectures, come to class, put in the time and you will pass with ease.
She was fun and easy. Lecture everyday, you skip and your going to miss a lot. I never had to read the book, all test questions in lec. notes. I thought she was Great. Dont think she teaches many courses, but take her if you can.
awesome! take her if you can! great person, and makes class so fun!
Deller is awesome, shes funny, sometimes, but extremely helpful. Not much homework, tests can be a lil difficult but just take notes and you'll be fine!
VERY good and easy teacher. Makes class interesting and fun, plus makes alot of jokes. Test are based off of the notes, so go to class, read over the notes a few times and you'll be fine.
Deller is a great teacher class is exciting interesting her tests are easy if come to class her tests are all based upon lecture there is no real reading maybe a couple pages no homework just interesting facts to learn about other cultures it was fun I SO SO SO RECOMMEND HER for individual and society as well as any other class she teaches
Deller is a great prof. She really tries to engage the class and make the time fly. You will get a kick out of her jokes, even the ones that aren't funny to you. She talks with enthusiaism and wants class to be fun. Her speciality that makes class worth it is the "pop quizes," they are for bonus attendance points. Great PROF!
She's so much fun and easy going. Her lectures are colorful, and her assignments simple. It's hard to imagine such a class having tests with such complicated wording. I always did great with lectures, notes, assignments, but for the life of me, could not get higher than a C on the tests. Have fun with the class, because it can be fun, just study.
She is a decent teacher, but she jumps all over the place which makes it really hard to follow her sometimes.

She helped me greatly. Once I did bad on a test and for the next few tests she had me show her my notes, and it actually really helped me.
Simply amazing- TAKE HER for Individual & Society! All you have to do is make sure you go to each lecture and right down everything she says. Everything that she goes over in class is exactly what's on the test. The tests are easy if you study from your notes good. She is a very funny, outgoing lady w/ good sense of humor!!!
Welcome to Her World is a favorite saying of hers! Go to class and learn more of her fav's!
She is very straight forward on what she wants from you. Kinda hard to communicate with her online but if you take the time to go meet with her she is extremely helpful. Easy class. Simple work and i still learned.
She may be okay if you do not have her online. I took her hybrid class and her D2L instructions are simply terrible. You can never understand what she wants and when you get your grade back from it she deducts points and you never find out why. She expects you to cheat on online quizzes so she makes them harder then in class ones.
Very bad professor. She is extremely vague and can't even manage to post things correctly on D2L. She is frustrating to deal with.
idk what all those people are talking about her online assignments were easy and not confusing. also the course compass was new from pearson this year so she didnt know what to expect. go to class and study for 20 min before the online tests and you wont get worse than a 24/30. easy grader with her online assignments, most pts was just completion.
She was my favorite professor! she was very funny and was very friendly. She knew her stuff about the subject. I really enjoyed going to her class didn't miss a single one. The one class I actually learned some intresting facts.
First C I have ever earned in college! Only grades were 3 exams, and I did bad on one of them. = C in the class, even though I missed only 2 classes and did all the reading.
AVOID at all costs. worst teacher i have ever taken. makes class boring and is hard to pay attention. tests are unbearable and she words them weird making it hard to understand or figure out a logical answer
Deller was fantastic! The mysoclab was awkward but she explained that using it was a nearly last minute committee decision not her's. She is very approachable and in her office much more than the syllabus said, plus unlike many other prof's she answers her emails and quickly!
It's a VERY easy class. There are NO exams... ever. Just bi weekly quizzes on D2L. Also usually a video to watch and summarize as a weekly assignment because it was a hybrid course. Grade consists of online quizzes, 13 easy assignments, and pop attendance "bonus points." Just don't be an annoying kid with lots of questions, she can be rude.
Everyone says she's funny, but she's really just trying way too hard to be sarcastic. She will also start to say something and then go "nevermind" and act like it's amusing. She rambles off topic half the time (I know more about her kid's soccer team than Women's Studies). Weird and kinda annoying. Also not very informative, high school level info.
i know more about her daughter's soccer than what we are supposed to be learning about. the tests are impossible and our first one had stuff from the chapters that we hadn't even done yet. it ws total bogus. Avoid having her for this class at all possible costs. But if you like a teacher that doesnt really teach and likes to ramble and randomly cry
GREAT professor, one of the best I've had. Can take a rather mondane subject and breath life into it. Would highly recommend this professor.
One of the worst professors I've ever had, and THE most poorly organized course I've ever taken. The subject matter is interesting, but Deller does little to enhance it.
Deller is a lot of fun. However, she is not a great professor. She spends a lot of class time rambling and telling stories and then when it comes to the tests, you realize you haven't actually discussed a lot of the material. She does however care about the students and is one of the nicest professors I have had so far. Just read the book.
Deller is one of the most unorganized person I have seen. Her office has papers everywhere. She talks about her kids soccer team a lot. Quizzes are hard and make no sense. Never has grades updated on D2L. Not recommended to take her.
One of the most disorganized teachers I have ever had. D2L assignments were very difficult to understand. I usually had no idea what she was looking for in those. She adds very little to this class, she just expects you to read the textbook and learn everything on your own. Tries way too hard to be funny. Talks about her girl scouts too much.
I read the reviews and thought I had an idea of what I was getting into. She does care somewhat about what she teaches, but is one of the most unorganized professors I have ever seen. And her stories never really seem to relate to what she is teaching. Read the textbook. Lots of online work. A lot of pop quizes.
She was a fine teacher, but also an absolute nightmare. She is possibly the most disorganized professors I've ever had. Often messes up on D2L and is unclear of what is expected. Would recommend ONLY for non-hybrid, non-online courses!
Just awful. Worst online class I've ever taken. She's erratic and rarely "present" or available to students, she's argumentative when she is available for communication, in short she expects you to put in a lot when she puts in nothing. Avoid if at all possible.
I was a 3.7 student in high school, got a 3.6 first semester in college, and failed her class. Would I like to take some blame? Yeah. But it's really difficult to. I've never had a teacher as disorganized as her. Assignments were unclear and confusing. She didn't remind the class about some online quizzes so we got zeros. Terrible teacher.
I wouldn't take her! I'm a honor student and she gave me a C-. Her quizes are ok, but she is highly UNORGANIZED, and it took her a week to post our grades AFTER grades were due.
Fabulous, wish she had different courses I could take with her.
Excellent teacher, great at getting class discussions moving. Tries to do too much on D2L which can come across as disorganized. She teaches five classes a semester and makes life hard. The teaching loads at Whitewater turns some teachers into robots.
She is very unorganized. She does not explain her hydrids very well. What she teaches in class rarely relates to what we had to read from the textbook, I did not like her.
You cannot understand half of what she says. She just mumbles. She spends the whole class giving examples and not talking about material. Dont even bother reading the book, it wont help.
It is impossible to understand and follow what she says in class. She is very unorganized and does not grade/post grades until the last second. She is a very nice and caring person but is not a very good teacher. I will not be taking anymore classes with her.
Very disorganized and takes a lot of time to get grades in she genuinely care about her students. She does review sessions for quizzes which are VERY helpful. There were multiple quizzes instead of exams which helped to lessen the amount of content per. If you?re willing to work a little bit but learn something as well, take her.
Deller is a very nice, very funny woman; however, I had a hard time following her ideas in class. We often get off subject and try to remember what we learned. Just as a side note- she has a catch phrase- "moving right along". She said it more than 91 times in our class in one semester (yes we counted). Basically, fun, nice, but hard to learn.
A little disorganized but who cares. Grades took a while to post but who cares about that?
Awesome professor, she's very amusing and very sweet!!!
Yeah she's nice, but she got so off topic sometimes that the didn't really cover the exam material. It's mostly book but then she will put random stuff she said once in class on there. Didn't like her
Considering she is trying to make a gen ed course interesting and engaging I think that she did an absolutely outstanding job! She encourages class discussion and participation. I have already signed up for another course with her!
People saying her disorganization isn't a big problem need to realize that 40% of the students in my class failed because of her lack of organization. I know this for a fact. Nobody knew when online quizzes were assigned and she lost assignments. I went to her office hours and literally couldn't see her desk it was so cluttered. Stay away.
Although the material is interesting, Deller is very unorganized, disorganized, and somewhat lazy when it comes to grading. She often misplaces assignments which WILL effect YOUR Grade! She's nice but far from sincere. Stay Away!!!!
I wish I had been able to take the class in person but even as an online course it was incredibly interesting. Deller responded to email immediately and even gave us her phone number. I really enjoyed the class!
Deller made the class fun! There was the right amount of work required, enough to keep it interesting but not so much that it was overwhelming. Plus it didn't feel like stupid busywork like some other courses have. Plus I was having a hard time with a health issue and she was very understanding. I recommend Deller!!
Disorganized!! Assignments are unclear, quizzes are CRAZY difficult and she doesn't post grades until the end. Do not take her unless you absolutely have to. This class with kick your ass.
Extremely disorganized, doesn't clarify topic material. Quizzes have nothing to do with assigned readings. Grades are rarely posted. Never get feedback. Would not recommend.
do NOT take this teacher!!! she is so unorganized. loses papers, takes all semester to put grades in, and is not quick to email back, if she even decides to respond. the lectures do not help with the quizzes at ALL. It is completely pointless showing up to class except for the attendance points.
She is very inconsistent with putting grades into D2L. Quizzes can be challenging. I read the textbook chapters for most of the quizzes but still struggled on quizzes. No final exam, just a quiz. Sometimes she does organized study sessions, go to them!! They help!
I took this class online, and was shocked at how disorganized she was. The readings did not refer to the quizzes, and her lectures were completely irrelevant. If you took this class for fun like I did, i would suggest for you to drop it, as it is an easy way to bring down your GPA since this professor struggles to present a class worth taking
Avoid if possible. Unorganized. She goes off on tangents. Her tests are based on ''lectures''. Tells you to read from the text book but doesn't really go over it. I had to re-take this course. Different professor = higher grade.
Not the worst, but far from the best. She does have some interesting lectures, but that's probably because of the class itself. She shows favortism to certain students, usually ones she has in her learning community, is disrespectful of students' opinions which differ from hers, and sometimes is outright rude. Not completely horrible, but BAD!!!
She is VERY unorganized. Sensitive topics are covered in this class and this teacher makes unnecessary jokes/comments. If you have this teacher on your schedule, SWITCH. I guarantee you will get a better grade and learning experience with someone else.
Awful teacher, good person.
She is good person and means well, just not a good teacher.
Deller is awesome. She's a great person and does not give a final exam. She makes sure that her students are comfortable and is a very caring professor. She loves her job and wouldn't trade it for anything. I highly recommend her if you enjoy a professor with a sense of humor and who is very easy in class.
Conversational and likable but also highly irresponsible, bumbling, inept, and sloppy. You can bet your bottom dollar that Dellar will botch one thing or another up for each class period. And unfortunately, she doesn't do anything to make up for it. Consequently, the student ends up suffering for her constant sloppy mistakes and bumbling.
She is a great person, but her class in unbearable. She is the most unorganized irresponsible professor I have ever had (I'm a Junior). She doesn't stick to her syllabus, her quizzes don't reflect the textbook, and her assignments are extremely convoluted. Avoid her classes, but go ahead and visit her office.
She is AWFUL. All over the place and is useless if you ask for help. She changes assignments out of nowhere. I worked on a paper she assigned and two days before the due date she completely changed the directions and refused to accept the paper I wrote for her initial directions. Happy I'm not a crim major - I don't have to deal with her again.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! never take her online class. she's terrible with direction and organization. and don't bother emailing her, she won't respond. i wish i dropped the class when i had the chance.
GREAT Professor, loves the topic, entertaining, can make a dry subject interesting.
Deller is a nice woman. She is funny however she can be insensitive towards certain topics. She is serious about abuse but made jokes abut cancer patients. She is an easy grader and if you want an easy A I would take her. The material is interesting too. Overall a good professor.
Deller goes above and beyond. No one is happy about taking gen ed classes but she works hard at making it interesting. I did not find her to be disorganized at all. She skipped a section of a chapter rather than assign us the reading in order to focus on the material we were covering. That was giving us a break, not being ditzy. Go Deller!
Great teacher, want to take as many classes from her as possible.
Deller is really a great professor. She explains things well in her lectures and keeps the class entertaining. Her "quizzes" are really tests, and there are three of them. They really aren't that bad if you study. Occasionally, though, there is a question about a small detail that most students overlook. Overall, she's a good professor.
At first she seems a little odd, but eventually she warms up to a class and it becomes a real fun class. We do fun activities that make it interesting and worth your time.
She's very knowledgeable and I enjoy her class a lot! However, she seems to be all over when it comes to structure of the class, very disorganized. If you miss class, then you won't understand any of her quizzes, since they are based off of random things we discussed in class. I enjoyed all of her stories though, very interesting and amusing.
Horrible Professor, the worst in UW-Whitewater Soc department. She doesn't respond to emails, and doesn't seem to care about her job. The correct syllabus wasn't even posted until a month into the semester. Her tests have nothing to do with the reading and her course material all seems like its just thrown together the night before she posts it
didnt have to read cause we went over everything in class
Deller isn't a bad teacher, she teaches interesting material... Her tests just seem more like they are based off of what she says not from what the book says. Make sure you are good at taking notes if you take this class. You take notes every day there are no power point slides. But it's never a dull moment in her world.
She is a great person but not really a good professor. Tests are lecture items thrown together randomly which confused quite a few students. She gets mad when students don't read the chapters before class, but no textbook information is ever covered in class or on the "quizzes". Otherwise clear grading criteria given.
Does not use powerpoints or gives out handouts. Only teaches from mouth and its hard to follow. She get side tracked a lot and loses what she was saying. Her test are hard and she does not give study guides for them. I would never take her again! She trys to make the class fun but it isnt.
Deller knows her stuff but her exams are on random facts. She doesn't test on what is discussed in class. She also is not willing to work with you if you are excused from class. She lost one of my 40 point assignments and gave me a zero for it. Don't take her.
class is very unorganized. She tells you to study things that are not on the tests. Her lectures are all over the place. Her "help" is not much help at all. Not the brightest crayon in the box. I would NOT recommend Deller.
I really enjoyed her class. it is important to go to class, take notes and participate. Sure, no one wants to take Gen Ed courses but at least she makes it interesting, entertaining and educational. There are three quizzes and a few drop box assignments plus randomly taken attendance points. Ask her about orange cats!
one of my fav profs here on campus. She truly does care for her students which makes her very respectable in my eyes. You never have to read the book, tho she does encourage it. Her tests are based on her lectures, so whatever she writes on the board, expect to be on the test. Lectures are enjoyable, tests are a little difficult. would take again
Deller was not a "bad" professor per say, but she was incredibly sloppy and haphazard, which is horrible for an online course. She grades things in a very odd order and takes a long time to do so. Her instructions are pretty vague, which is bad for an online course. Also, her tests are on huge pieces of very dry text. Stick to her notes for tests.
Class was enjoyable, but tests were so hard. She didnt give enough information to pass the tests with a good grade. She was a little sketchy.
Deller is the best! Hilarious, awesome, and sarcastic. She honestly acts like just another college kid. A little disorganized but her tests are SO EASY! I took criminology as an elective (I am an accounting major) and I am so happy I did. It's nice to actually want to go to class because I know I am going to be laughing 24/7.
Deller is a very nice lady, really wants you to succeed. If you go to her for help she is very compassionate about what she is teaching and she will help you. Do NOT bother reading the book, but write down everything she writes on the board and study the quizzes for each chapter in the book. If you do that you will be fine.
Deller was the worst teacher I have ever had at this university. She made class for all her students terrible. I got A's on all the participation & homework. When it came down to tests they were impossible. She rambled in class, throws random words up on the board & they appear on the test. She doesn't use the text book at all. YES I went to class.
I got all A's in the rest of my classes and a C in hers. Her tests were really difficult; her lectures consisted of mostly rambling with no real structure at all. I attended 100% of the classes and took notes every day, but still didn't do too well on tests because there were things that appeared on tests that we never discussed. DO NOT TAKE HER
Deller was horrible. I wouldn't take time out of my day to write this if she wasn't. Don't listen when people say she is a good teacher. I know our whole class hated her and she hated us.
Just no.
If you attend all the classes and pay attention the quiz's are going to be pretty easy. I got a B + on them without studying at all. She's easy to talk to and helps when you ask. Just pay attention to the lectures and you'll do fine. if you miss to many classes you'll fail. only had two drop in assignments that were about a page long each.
She has a good sense of humor. She is always welcoming in class and during her office hours. She is easy to talk too, there are only three quizzes which are relatively easy, most information on the tests come from in class notes and discussions. Therefore skipping class will cost you a grade. Outside class projects are fun.
Funny and nice person but not the best professor. Gets off track very easily during lectures which hurts you because then she doesn't teach you everything you need to know for tests. Tells you you only need to read certain things from text for test but there will be other things on the test from text. Does activities that are fun but very pointless
Shes terrible
Confusing lecturer, Unclear on due dates, Quiet talker. Don't take.
There was no lee way on anything, even with serious matters where personal, definately favorites people in the class. VERY unorganized online class...
This was the first class I received a D in. I literally turned in everything and at worst got a C on 1 of the quizzes. DO NOT TAKE unless you're prepared to fail.
Loved the class
The best teacher I've taken by far. Hysterical and understands her students. It's very enjoyable and the very few quizzes are easy. LOVE her!
Deller is a great lady and we hardly ever look at the book. Before the test, we always review in the class so if you pay attention that day, you'll be fine. Our classes are sometimes very random, but a lot of our lectures aren't even on the exam so you don't have to pay attention. She truly cares about her students and is funny.
While Deller is hilarious and entertaining, she tends to get off topic. She assigns us a chapter at a time that are due the next class. She doesn't use powerpoints which can make the information confusing to understand. If you pay attention in class and write down everything that she says during class, you will be fine. But I do mean everything.
Professor Deller is awful and also a tough grader. Her quizzes are nothing like the lectures. Gives you 1/3's randomly and claims you sleep when you are obviously paying attention the whole time. DON'T TAKE
Hard to understand at first what she wants, but after that it is a super interesting class. deller really cares about her students and does want to see them succeed. I would take her again in a heartbeat.
Great teacher, a bit disorganized but knows her stuff. Miss class and it will hurt you come examine time. Pay attention in class and join the discussions and will do fine.
Super easy class , but go to class and take notes of everything that she writes on the board and take sub notes of what she says.. only one short paper. Deller makes lectures intersting and encourages discussion
So incredibly off topic, only exam grades basically and never a curve, small handwriting on board you cant read or see, disorganized, teach yourself or you wont pass.
Deller is a great professor. Only 3 quizzes for the entire semester so they will make or break your grade but she's super caring and helpful and will review with you the class period before a quiz. I'd take her again in a heartbeat
Great professor, her lectures are great to listen to
While she seems passionate about her subject her class is by far the most unorganized online class I have ever taken. She changes assignments last minute and leaves out important directions or changes them without letting anyone know. Not sure how she is in person but if you are looking for online I wouldnt take her.
Deller is a hilarious professor. She really brings enjoyment to Sociology276 (Intro to Crim). She takes pride in her knowledge and work and tries to distribute her knowledge to her students. Highly recommend taking her. She tries taking her students on field trips!
AMAZING gal. She really does care about her students. Does have an occasional tangent, but you're never bored. Pretty easy A. HOWEVER, if you are doing any extra credit opportunities with her, she will not be of much help. Unclear expectations, no real deadlines, and pathetic points at best.
Deller is by far one of my favorite professors. Some words of advice pay attention to the lectures because the tests/quizzes she gives are based on what is discussed (you have an impact on how the test is created). Also, she's funny and makes what you're learning interesting. In addition, we didn't use the textbook that much after the first test.
definitely a great prof
This is my second time taking Deller. I'm in her Service Learning and Leadership class and we meet once a week for 30 minutes. Deller is really nice and has a sarcastic humor (so don't take her jokes seriously). Don't talk in class because you'll get on her bad side. Also, She surprises us with food sometimes.
I've taken her before, and the first time I had her I really liked her. this time was much more disorganized and confusing. I went to every class, did every homework assignment, and still there were things on the exam that I don't ever remember talking about. She just lectures at you, so you essentially have to try to guess what's important.
so disorganized, i think she just randomly gives you grades for homework because the assignments are the same week by week and I got a huge range of grades for the same work. didn't do well on the exams even tho i went to every class and studied a lot. do not take this professor bc you'll get a bad grade
Deller is extremely unorganized. Exams are impossible even if you study a ton. I am a good student and I got a C in her class. She gets very off topic during lectures and does not cover the material for the exams.
Deller is very knowledgeable about the field of Criminology. She works very hard to make her lectures interesting. Her lectures alert you to what to focus on for the tests. Participate in class and she will delighted. I read the text, took good notes, actually studies for the tests and did fantastic in the class. This was my 2nd class with her.
Melissa D. is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She is SUPER disorganized, unclear with the material she was hired to teach, unfriendly, difficult to work with, and she has an attitude. When first having her as a professor, she seemed nice, but over time she became worse and worse. She wasn't passionate about the material and it was hard.
Even if you attend class, the things on the test were never mentioned or in the book. Seriously, she even quoted before I took this last test that she didn't even know some questions on there. ITs frustrating for someone who attends class and takes the best notes in class everyday (she told me that personally). So yeah, prepare to fail. My first C.
We didn't really do anything in this class, it was an easy 1 credit class. Deller is super chill and funny and is a great choice to lead the Honors Learning Community. Definitely a cool person.
If you're in the honors class, definitely take Deller. It's a super easy class and still provides you with the information. Your main grade is from a big partner presentation. Was a good semester, I'd definitely recommend this class IF you take the honors version. Deller is super chill and funny. She gets to know her students personally and is nice
Deller was alright in terms of personality, but her grading and test structure causes headaches. Your grade is based mostly on tests, outside of a few small assignments, but the tests are the problem. She doesn't give study guides, and a lot of the test questions refer to obscure parts of one lecture, like the name of a girl in an irrelevant story.
If you attend classes, read textbook, and study hard for exams, you can get A. She is really nice and caring person, so if you think youre gonna get bad grades, then you should go to her office and talk to her. She will help you.
Deller is very chill teacher. She is a little bit disorganized, but doesn't ask students for much. 3 quizzes for most of the grade, a couple assignments to turn in, and some credit for showing up. Most of the material are definitions and important cases to remember. She likes to joke and get our feedback on criminology laws and events. Interesting
great professor, passionate about the subject, if you put in the effort she will bend over backwards to help
she is a good teacher! she tried to make a gened class as good as she can.
She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities but her quizzes are hard. Even if you read the notes and book, the quizzes are still difficult to get a good grade on. She also struggles with the online aspect of class.
Melissa Deller is a nice person but not a good professor. Her lectures make no sense at times and doesn't really teach you about the subject. She has a lot of personal experiences she tries to use as examples but they aren't helpful. Her quizzes are based on the lectures and she makes them kind of difficult. I would not recommend taking her class.
Do not take. She rarely answers emails, shes lazy, and should not be a professor
Professor Deller is the most disorganized professor I have ever taken. As a senior, I have always gotten A's & B's in my classes & have been on the Dean's list. I received a D- with Professor Deller, proving that she is terrible. She doesn't review her study guides, leaving interpretation for wrong answers, doesn't put grades in & never emails back
A very nice lady once you get to know her. Passionate about what she teaches. Despite these things she is a terrible professor, especially taking her online. She is very unorganized and her lack of ability to navigate canvas caused me to drop a letter grade. She does everything last minute and fails to take responsibility for poor communication.
Like most of the reviews state, she is a nice enough lady. However, she is very disorganized on canvas. The average test score for our first exam was a D+ if that tells you something! On final day she kept postponing the time it would open because she was still making it! This course was the biggest headache of my semester and its a GENED! BEWARE!
Deller is very disorganized. This class has literally been the death of me this semester. She cancelled class both times one week then expecting us to know information about the class just from reading the book. She sucks at answering emails, and blames a lot of her canvas problems on her computer, which is supposedly always fried or broken. bad.
Deller is wonderful! Besides being a very nice and caring person she is absolutely hilarious. She puts 100% into her lectures. The tests are based heavily on the class notes. Participate in class and the time will fly by! The text, which she is one of the authors, is rather thick, but it is manageable.
Terrible. Very unorganized. Rarely replies to emails. Posted the study guide to our exam an hour before the exam was opened. Doesn't provide clear teaching. Tells stories the entire time. Worst professor I've had at whitewater.
Professor Deller is understanding at times, but I don't think that this class reflected who I am as a student whatsoever. I struggled to score well on the tests, but I did all of the assignments on time and did the reviews that she gave us to prepare for the tests. This wasn't any help. I felt that this class was made for students to fail.
I had Deller in the spring which went well until Covid hit. Although it was a hard switch to online from face to face I made it through just fine. This fall her canvas was rough but improved throughout the semester. She is quite flexible due to covid so how about being the same way with her? She is a good teacher, just a bit old school tech-wise
Your grade is basically based off of 3 exams... the exams are irrelevant to what we talked about in class. She also has many many typos in her exams that make the questions very confusing, which represents her very disorganized personality. Not heavy on homework or reading, not much to do so that was nice, but I don't think my tests reflected me.
This was my first time taking a class with Professor Deller and I will never take her again. She is so disorganized on her Canvas and with her lectures to the point where I learned more from just reading the textbook. She doesn't tell us what is covered on the exam until 2 days before, things we didn't learn. She NEVER answered any of my emails!
Very unclear about directions and is a super picky grader. No matter how hard I tried I could not get more than a C on quizzes and Im usually an A student. She was super disorganized and complained about how much she had to grade when she gave us never ending papers and discussions. Never answered questions I would send her the same email again.
Her class is super diffcult. In all honesty, as long as you really care about learning the material and really care about Criminology and give it your all, it isn't too bad. If you're not majoring in this, do NOT take this for "fun." Graded by essentially 3 tests which covers 4 chapters each, where chapters are about 40 pages long. PARTICIP. PTS!!
I would not recommend taking her. She doesn't really seem interested in teaching anymore and lacks knowledge about technology. If that isn't enough to turn you away, her waiting a day before the exam to even give out a review should. It is disrespectable that a teacher would pull something like that. Also a lot of stuff on the test wasn't taught
I loved Prof. Deller, but her teaching style definitely isn't for everyone. She's fun and understanding, but she can be disorganized. If you struggle with unclear deadlines or prefer a more strict learning environment, you won't enjoy taking a class with her. However, if you're able to roll with the punches, class with her will be enjoyable.
Professor Deller was nice but her teaching style absolutely did not work for me. The class was very random and **there was little passion**. As long as you do well on the vocabulary-heavy tests, an A is easy. Even though I got an A, this class was not worth my time, let alone the investment I am making in my education. This is just my opinion.
Just dont take her. She doesnt treat her students with respect and is unwilling to help you in any way.
Prof. Deller works hard to make a CORE course applicable to your life. The tests arent bad because she covers all of the test material, gives a study guide, uses power points, & reviews so the combination make completing the guide & preparation easy. She even held a drop-in review session the night before the test. + She gives trigger warnings.
I have had my share of bad teachers, and let me say, she has been the worst. Her classes are so random and hard to follow that it would be easier to just read the textbook and take the tests. Many of our meetings had nothing to do with the tests and would only confuse us even more once the test came. I strongly recommend to not take her.
Everyday when you walk into her class, you never know what your going to get. Like a box of chocolates; but the thing about this box of chocolates is that in every class you learn something random from a large array of random subjects, all of which don't correlate to what will be on the exams, and the reviews don't correlate with her exams.
ITs LIKE SHE GAVE UP ON TEACHING. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT THIS CLASS COVERS. You will not know what to do in this class. The class was 2 and a half-hour long once a week. She would just talk about what she read for 2 hours and never lecture. She has things on the exams that were never taught or covered. great person awful professor. could say more
Lectures were very all over the place and tests were extremely hard to do well on because the material on the tests was not the same as the lecture materials. Professor Deller is extremely disorganized and unhelpful, she does not answer emails is extremely difficult to receive help from if youre struggling in her class. I do not recommend.
Deller was my least favorite professor I've ever had. I had a very difficult time trying to figure out what this class even taught because she just went right into a lecture on day 1. Not only was she terrible at being engaging with her students, but she also took points off of my attendance when I got covid and was forced to quarantine. -4/10
-loves answering questions -wants her students to succeed -assigns about 5 homework assignments that may take you an hour or so to complete -easy grader -tries to make class enjoyable/makes a lot of jokes -loves participation -no final exam -let my class bring a note card for last test -slow to respond to emails -available during office hours
Professor Deller is extremely nice and easy to get along with. The work itself isn't that tough, but the word choice of some questions are extremely confusing. Her organization is also very rough. Some questions on the tests were not covered in class. Her test grading is also very confusing, as my grades often did not reflect my performance.
Nice person. Interesting class content. But get another professor if you can. One of those situations were stuff on exams is random and hours of studying can be for nothing. Honestly, the lack of clear grading criteria, and planning made this class the biggest wild card of the semester. And its a GENED for goodness sake!
Professor Deller is pretty good. Her class is a little annoying because she will assign readings and then go through powerpoint's explaining the reading for the entire class. She does not take attendance regularly, but does random in-class activities for attendance points. She is really nice and funny.
Great professor, not a lot of opportunities for grades but not difficult assignments. Really good in class discussions and very caring and willing to work with students. Very understanding. Idk what all these negative reviews are about she really is great.
Overall I enjoyed this class and the teacher. She does not give much homework but is never clear on expectations for assignments. She also never answers her email ever so you will have to ask questions in class and even then you might not get a clear answer. Sometimes she does not seem prepared but she is passionate and does care about students.
I think Deller is a great person and has good intentions but does not have a good teaching style. Her PowerPoints are very unorganized and I did not understand them at all so all I could do to save myself for the tests was study the textbook but still failed. Not a lot of homework, attendance matters. She sometimes brings her dog to class though :)
Honestly she is a great person who is very funny. I really struggled to follow her power points and how they correlated to the test because there were hundreds of terms and random information thrown at us that seemed pretty unorganized. The three exams are on paper and you're allowed to use a notecard. She brings her dog sometimes.
She's pretty chill. Not sure what the negatives are about. She could have a little more confidence, but otherwise, the test is straight off of the power points. You pay attention in class in the class is easy to do well in. Our class joked around and was generally enjoyable for a core class. Participation will make her day and makes the class
She is super nice and I definitely would take her again. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I would recommend going. She has in-class assignments that you can't makeup and she won't warn you about. Her powerpoints are difficult to understand if you skip class a lot and your grade will show when you skip. Her tests are kind of hard.
What could I say about Deller that wasn't already chatted about in dorms by her fans? Truly an amazing professor. I couldn't have passed my Freshman year with a 4.0 without her. Seems like a Ravenclaw, but a Gryffindor at heart. Transparent tests. Clear lectures (yes, with the occasional side tangent) but who doesn't love a good story? Meet her dog
Attendance is not mandatory but there are points to be gained for doing so. So many students did not bother to attend, therefore the blame is on them. For 3 tests: a 3x5 card for taking test, review sheets, review in class, almost every single answer spelled out in the power points, PLUS holds review sessions with practice ?'s in the evening.
I am heartbroken that Deller retired! I felt that she made CORE 130 fun. I took her criminal investigation of child abuse.322. Although its a horrible topic, she is very kind & professional in handling the topic, and class is very interactive My favorite class with her was the UK & Ireland travel class, that was phenomenal! It changed my life!
Absolutely fantastic professor, the best I've had yet at UWW. Kind, caring, always available to talk or help when you need it. She set up lots of activities that let us freshmen get to know each other and feel more comfortable starting our journey here. Good lectures, very informative, clear, and concise delivery. 11/10!
Deller tries to make the class enjoyable with lots of jokes, but her lectures can be disorganized. The workload is manageable, and she's understanding, though test grading can be confusing. unstuckstudy was a big help for studying.
I really enjoyed taking Deller this semester, the only thing that wasn't my favorite was how she wasn't very lenient with missing class. If you missed class more than the allowed amount you will fail the course. Overall her lectures were super fun and engaging as well as the projects too!
Deller is a very caring, funny professor, who makes horrible topics easy to speak about and learn about. I would take her again and urge others.
Deller goes above and beyond for students in and out of class. Although not tenure track she does more than anyone else in her dept., an awesome international travel study, Honors LC coordinator, student orgs. adviser, field trips & local volunteer opportunities, As well as being phenomenal in class. I truly respect her, and you should too.
She was a very kind and smart professor, who I could tell that she really enjoyed her job and talking to us about it. Her lectures and slides were not organized and she skimmed through them too fast for people to take notes or ask questions so that wasn't very helpful. Besides that, she was pretty lenient on grading but you could not miss a class.
Deller is passionate about the topic of Child Abuse and Neglect and is genuinely concerned that the course content will traumatize the students. We watch some pretty decent true crime, none of which I had seen, and I watch all the true crime stuff!
