She treats the class like it's full of deadheads and goes over things we already know while failing to go over more specific details that we actually do need to understand the material. Then on the quizzes you miss questions because you don't know the specific details. She'll take the time to go over things during her office hours but not helpful.
I really enjoyed Dr. Ely's class. She found a way to make Chemistry pretty interesting. Her office hours were pretty limited, but she was open to making appointments and was very understanding when it came to being on the edge of a grade. Very sweet woman, tough tests, and helpful.
Dr. Ely is not only very clear in her methods of teaching, but is also very caring and kind. She is extremely understanding and makes chemistry interesting. She is very passionate about what she does and is a wonderful person and professor! Definitely recommend her!
was all over the place and went so fast. i basically needed to bring binoculars to see what she was writing
Dr. Ely shows a passion for chemistry and for teaching. She really cares about how the students do and makes sure we understand the material. Everything on the tests was covered in class. That being said, regular attendance is necessary in order to get a good grade. I would recommend Dr. Ely to anyone.
She is an excellent professor!! I learned so much and as long as you keep up with the material, you'll earn an A!
Professor Ely was always there to help. At the end of the semester there was a chance to get 4% put back on your grade. If you pay attention during the lectures and do some practice problems from your book the class shouldn't be too difficult.
Dr. Ely is a fantastic professor! She is very organized and clear in class. She is helpful during office hours and is willing to help. Her tests are not very easy, but if you go to class and study you should be fine. I would highly recommend her to anyone taking Chem 115.
Dr. Ely is clearly passionate about teaching and very sweet. She loves to hear from her students and is always there if you need her. I've had her for both CHEM 110 and CHEM 115 and her teaching style is extremely solid. Definitely take Dr. Ely's class if you have the chance!
I did not like the way Chem 110 was set up, but Dr. Ely is a great professor and always willing to help her students. Attendance is mandatory for this class.
I had Dr. Ely for both 110 and 115 and she is truly fantastic. Great notes, always willing to help you at office hours, and wants to see her students succeed. Super nice as well. It is NOT an easy class, but if you put the effort in, you can manage it. Her tests are fair and she offers up to 4% extra credit at the end if the semester.
Dr. Ely is very nice and willing to help her students. I couldn't understand a thing in her lectures though. She goes way too fast. I would recommend NOT printing off her lecture slides because writing the material in your own words will make you learn better. Also, go to her office hours.
Dr. Ely is by far the best professor I've had this semester. She makes sure that you learn her material and if you don't, she makes time for you. Also, she is one of the nicest ladies I've ever met. I am a chemistry major and I highly recommend you take her class. Her test averages were all higher than any of the others.
I recommend this professor to anyone! She is very clear in lectures and helps you out in any way possible. You get your test grades back within the hour! I would take her for 116 if she taught it!!
She's probably best teacher to get for Chem 115. Other teachers exams were harder and Dr. Ely's class' average score was always higher than others. If you need help she's really nice in office hours and willing to explain stuff to you in depth.
Chem 115 is a very difficult course, but Dr. Ely is an excellent professor. Although the material is covered extremely quickly, Dr. Ely does her best to explain it, and she goes over lots of example problems. Dr. Ely is also one of the kindest professors I've ever met, and she is very good with responding to emails and grading tests quickly too.
Dr. Ely is a great professor! She is always open for questions, and tries her best to make sure her students understand the material. CHEM 115 was not an easy course and if you want a good grade you're going to have to work for it.
I visited Dr. Ely's office hours frequently and she was always happy to help me truly understand conceptual material. Very knowledgable but doesn't make you feel dumb for not knowing harder chemistry material. She encourages her students and invests in you if you invest in the course. Hands-down my favorite professor! Take her for 115!
Very helpful. Makes Chemistry as easy as it can be.
CHEM 110 can be difficult, but it's not her fault. The material is relatively easy but the quizzes can be hard. Go to class, take notes, and do not be afraid to ask for help. Ely is extremely helpful and explains things very well if you ask. If you actually do the homework and study, the class should be cake.
She is hands down I think one of the best CHEM 110/115 professors. She cares about the students. She's a great professor, but that doesn't change CHEM is hard. You still gotta put in a lot of work to understand it.
Ely is the best professor you can take for 115. Her exams are far easier than others, she is clear and concise in her lectures, and she gives you multiple opportunities for extra credit at the end of the semester. She is ridiculously kind and cares about her students. Also- her homework allows multiple attempts for each question.
Ely is the best professor for CHEM115. If you take her you will have a very good understanding of chemistry as long as you put in the time to study and go over her notes.
Awesome teacher!
Dr. Ely is phenomenal. Notes are clear and note problems are just like those on the test. Book is useless; online homework is helpful and a chunk of the grade. Attendance is a must (for every class you miss (after the first miss), your grade gets lowered by 5%). Very helpful via email and office hours.
Absolutely recommend. She is the best chemistry professor by far. I had taken it before and had no idea what I was doing and failed, but retaking it with her was the best decision ever. She is phenomenal and really great at explaining it, but you do have to put in the work to get a good grade. She is incredibly nice and cares about all her students
If you don't understand something, go to office hours. Her office hours are the most helpful I've been to. If you can't get to her regular ones, schedule them. Go to class, because you get extra credit for going. Do practice problems on your own. This is a really hard class but she does a great job teaching so much material in such a short time.
Dr. Ely is the best professor by far you can take for 115. She is helpful and organized and genuinely cares about her students. Definitely go to her office hours if you do not understand something.
Best professor, awesome lecture, reasonable hw, a lot of extra credit opportunities. If you need both 115 and 116, take her for 115. You'll have a solid foundation and make 116 a lot easier. I never took any chem class before and finish her 115 with 98% overall.
Honestly, all the extra credit opportunities others have spoken about have completely vanished. Dr. Ely is *super* demanding in terms of memorization (as in "Hey, it's Wednesday, here's a list of 50 ions, know them perfectly by Monday.") Her quizzes are based on the most obscure methods covered in lecture, etc.
Dr. Ely is such a great professor. She is fair in her grading and does well explaining more difficult consepts. The exams are not made to trick you and she prepares well for them.
Good teacher, tests can be somewhat difficult but decent studying will give you an A.
Dr. Ely overall is a very good chemistry professor, but the class is not a blowoff class. There is a lot of online homework so do it before the night it is due. Exams are difficult so study hard and memorize all the acids, bases, etc. Lectures move very fast because there is so much material for 115, but Dr. Ely lectures effectively.
the best chem 115 professor, lectures are very straight foward. tests are clearly based off the lecture notes and they are not meant to trick you
Dr. Ely gives amazing lectures . If you pay attention & start studying early for exams you will easily pass. Exam 1 is the easiest & the only one you really have a chance at getting a 100% on. The final was mostly mathematical & quite difficult. Do all of the homework to a 100% & do all extra credit. She gave us 1% for attendance & 3% in other.
Dr. ELy is a phenomenal professor. She is happy to help you outside of class during recitation and/or office hours with both lecture, lab, and homework. I dropped the course, but Dr. Ely nor her teaching style were a reason for this; if you NEED to take CHEM 115, take Ely's section. She is a fashion icon and skinny legend and I would die for her.
Class requires a good bit of effort but Ely is very kind and will take time out of her day to help
Dr. Ely gave a potential 4% bonus to your overall grade at the end of the year for doing well on a practice test and not missing class. Additionally, she's a great lecturer and very easy to talk to. The class is still pretty hard though, but she's definitely the easiest chem 115 prof.
Easily the best CHEM115 teacher at the university. Highly recommend. I think she generally has easier tests than other professors based on what I have seen. Gives good lectures however this is still a difficult class non the less.
Dr. Ely is one of the better 115 teachers at WVU. This class was the hardest class I have ever taken. I also have no chemistry experience so that may add to it. Many of my friends barely passed the class. Exams are very hard, so make sure you review the practice exams. I received 75% on 2 of my exams and still got an A in the class.
This class is VERY hard. I think she is the best option for Chem 115. I don't like her lectures because she wants you to print out the slides ahead of time and take notes on that, so if you want to do them in a notebook you have to write really fast. She did round my grade .5 pts to a B, and is the only Chem prof to give an extra credit assignment
Take this professor if you need introductory chemistry courses! Dr. Ely truly cares about her students and has a vast amount of knowledge in her field of expertise. In addition, she was always available for help outside of class and would take the time to teach you a topic if you did not understand it.
Awesome to talk to. Very down to earth and understanding about everything. She helped me go from an F to a solid B
The best chemistry professor ever! She takes her time to make sure you understand the material and she really cares about her students doing well. I recommend going to her office hours and recitations if you don't understand something. The material during lecture are fair game for the exams. I got a 100 on all of them!
Just get the online code for the text book so you can access homework. She makes things really easy in comparison to other professors and is always willing to answer questions. She advises students to print out the slides and fill in examples, but if you learn better by writing things down, I suggest writing them all by hand.
Chem-115 is not an easy class, but she makes it as smooth as possible. She will answer any questions you have and will help you in any way needed. She is very approachable, which makes all the difference in a course like this. You need to do the practice problems she gives because they are just like the tests. Do your homework and go to recitation.
One of the best chemistry professors who genuinely cares about each one of her students, she provides the help and if you work hard, you will get an excellent grade. I wish every professor was as passionate and caring like her.
Ely is the best 115 professor. Her exams are very fair and she provides a copy of the old exam and a practice exam. Recitations are very helpful and she is super approachable. Truly cares about the success of her students. Would definitely recommend her and I wish I could take her again! There are attendance and participation points every class.
She's a great professor. Exam is easy if you pay attention and going to weekly recitation helps.
Dr. Ely is an amazing teacher and extremely helpful in and outside of class. Class attendance and participation is mandatory, and there is homework due online each week. There are three exams throughout the semester and then the final at the end. Definitely one of the best professors!
Dr. Ely is a great Professor who takes time to get to know her students strengths and weaknesses. She provides previous tests to give students a way of seeing what they need to work on before an exam. However, as with any normal class, you must attend class to do well because the notes are interactive and she does participation points. Take her!!
Best Chem professor there is
One of my friends suggested taking Professor Ely, but it was not worth it at all. Although she was an OK teacher, she was very rude. I would not take her again but if she is your only option, keep to yourself in the back. Participation and weekly quizzes took place. Exams were not that bad if you study.
She is very nice, and is good at explaining things. If you study your notes and the practice exams it's not too bad.
Ms. Ely is definatley my favorite Chemistry Professor. She's supper caring and loves helping her students and has a real concern for their grade. She covers everything that will be on the test very well in lectures and even offers extra hours to go and practice more chemistry with her twice a week for every student.
Lectures can be long, but they really help. She uses many examples to help understand. Her recitation worksheets help and she gives you old exams to study from. First exam is easy but the next ones are harder . Second exam can be a shock to most people.
Dr. Ely is a true gem!! She is a wonderful lady and is super generous when it comes to additional help in and out of the classroom. I came to this course from 110 so a lot of this work was easier for me, but she never failed to help or talk me through some of the difficult topics. She wants you to succeed-- take all of her advice, it will help!
Lectures were lots of example problems. I ended up going back and teaching myself the steps because she just went through problems. Sit in front if you want to see the board. Shes in a huge lecture hall but writes small on the chalk board.
Extremely rude, not understanding at all especially during this crazy fall 2020 semester, and a heartless woman . Easy lab, but shes VERY annoying to deal with
Not good to work with online. Has the weirdest 5:00pm lab deadlines, it does a great job of tricking students into getting a zero on a 100 point lab. The syllabus says nothing about dropping the lowest grade. Not an understanding proff.
Dr. Ely was the best professor choice for Chem 115. Her lectures are very specific and everything on her exams are mentioned specifically in the lectures. She goes over the practice problems slowly and provides details for every step. She is also very accessible outside of class. Overall, one of the best professors I have had. Strongly recommend!
I asked Dr. Ely to calculate my true current grade for the class in October, however, she refused.
She was great! I had her. She is the nicest and best ever. She always has a smile on her face. She lectures from the first second class starts. But her lectures are great and she's great at explaining.
Dr. Ely for lab did not interact much with students, but she would answer any questions you had. Pre-Lab Quizzes and Lab deadlines were at 5:00pm which were weird and grading was done by TAs, not Dr. Ely. The lab itself I found easy if you paid attention during your Chem lectures. Just make sure you pay attention in lecture and do the work on time.
If you took AP Chemistry or a similar class, you'll do fine in CHEM 115. If not, you'll definitely have to work for the A, but it's doable. Dr. Ely truly cares for her students and her lectures were easy to understand. She gave extra credit at the end and was lenient due the class being online. Tests are usually math-heavy!
I absolutely loved Professor Ely! Her lectures were kinda long & you had to watch them 3x a week but they were so descriptive & clear so I loved them. She also replies quick and will answer any question you send her pictures of. Her tests followed the notes exactly so there were no surprises. I put most of my time into this class but it paid off.
Dr. Ely was a very understanding a nice professor. Chemistry is just a hard subject, and many kids don't put in the effort that this course requires. She is an amazing professor and explains everything well. Everything on the exams, she has mentioned and explained either in lecture or recitations.
Does not help students with homework, or provide helpful feedback. Is rude when asking for help and has history of accusing students of academic dishonesty with no proof or reasoning. Would not recommend to anyone, avoid this professor!
Very good professor. Definitely the best chem professor I have ever had. She is very nice and helpful. If you go to office hours she is always willing to help. If you pay attention and study the exams are easy. Love the way she teaches overall!
She told us that 68% was the average on our second exam and she said "that's really high for test 2". East to reach by email though not helpful, she refuses to meet 1 on 1 and tells us to attend her office hours which there are 60 other students there. Known for falsely accusing students of cheating and charging them with academic dishonesty.
Class average on every exam so far has been Ds. She spends 25 minutes 2 days per week actually teaching. So bad at her job that she accused half of her class of academic dishonesty and it is now on our records for simply being in a group chat. When asked about an exam on Easter Monday, she basically said don't go home for Easter. Worst professor.
Great at explaining concepts in her pre-recorded lectures. Very helpful in office hours. You'll do good on the exams if you study and do the practice problems. The Easter Monday exam thing was not her decision and people still had plenty of time to study, she really is caring.
Super easy class, only 2 assignments per week max. You get 3 tries on the pre-labs and she drops the 2 lowest labs and the lowest pre-lab.
100% takes all the stress of chem 115 off of your shoulders. genuinely cares about every students opinion and questions. if you attend office hours you will get amazing help and she is always answering questions above and beyond. My only complaint is she doesn' teach 116 so I cant have her again:(. 100%%%% no doubt best professor I have ever Had!!
Super great professor! A lot of people complained about stuff she had no control over. University had pretty defined guidelines and kids tried to fight it. Her lectures are pretty slow but her classes go fast paced. Recommend increasing playback speed to match class speed. Drops your lowest quiz grades and even offered extra credit! Easy class!
Overall great professor! People complained about things that were set by the university but that's not on her. About the class: going to lecture is a must and fast paced. You have to answer the participation question by the evening to get the points. The class is basically a review of AP chem if you took it. Don't slack on ALEKS. It piles up quick.
I don't know what these people are talking about on here. This was by far the worst professor I have ever had. She's rude and brags about how many students fail her class. Most people I know have dropped her class and are taking the class with a different professor next semester.
I loved professor Ely! I hated chemistry in high school but when I took Ely's class, it made me realize it's not so bad. She teaches as if she understands that some people have no idea what they're doing; she explains everything very thoroughly but makes it simple. Make sure you go to class because it's fast paced. Overall, loved Professor Ely.
He is one one the tough grader I ever had. The exam percentage is almost 60 % of whole course. if you fail one of her exam it will hurts your grade and very difficult to pass. Her lecture was very heavy. He will go though powerpoint. Don't have any books. This powerpoint doesn't help the test at all.
Professor Ely was a great teacher for a difficult class. Some students would complain about the course material and blame it on Ely. The material is difficult, but Professor Ely does a great job of explaining the material. Most students who do not succeed in this course do not have proper techniques for studying.
Please take Dr. Ely. She is the best professor in the department. I'm not saying that Chem lab is easy, but she makes it bearable. You should try to get the same professor for lab and lecture so that the material lines up, but even if you get different ones, the TA's are very helpful. You never actually see Ely, you see the Ta's, but they are great
She is a very caring teacher who is always looking to better her teaching style and always ready to show her students that she cares. She is always open to helping you, she actually teaches you, and I would say she likes to tell everyone how to study and gives different methods of study to allow people different methods to approach studying
Chemistry in general is a hard subject; however, Dr. Ely explains the content in manner that makes sense. Nevertheless, you will have to study outside the class if you wish to succeed. Dr. Ely is also always willing to help and answer any questions or explain concepts more clearly if you ask, not only in regards to lecture but for lab as well.
Her test was very hard almost 75% grade based on her class Exam. If you fail one of this Exam it was very difficult to pass. I heard so many drop her class before the final exam. One of the toughest grader I have ever had. You also have Participation Question on every class. She don't make her class interesting and gave always heavy lecture.
Dr. Ely's lectures are super fast-paced. Exams have had very few questions (between 15-20) for a short amount of time (45 minutes), and each question is worth almost 7 points. This is NOT enough time so you really need to know the content without really thinking about it. If you aren't a good test-taker, you will struggle.
This is a very difficult class but she is a great professor! She was always trying to help out in any way but participation does matter. Only one assignment per week and extra credit for the final. Probably the best chem professor!
Chem 115 is hard but Ely is very neat and organized with her lectures. As long as you do the homework (all three attempts) you can do the exams. The exam questions are never new and have always been seen before but just with different numbers.
Super well organized lecture and notes. Amazing at giving and explaining practice problems for each topic. Exams correlate directly to course content. My favorite professor of the semester by far.
Dr. Ely is by far the best chemistry professor at WVU. If you have the opportunity to be one of her students, DO IT!! She provides useful materials through handouts, practice exams, and homework problems. Many times, her study materials are much harder than the actual exam, so you are prepared and feel confident taking the exam. 100% recommend her!
I'm not the best at chem, but Dr. Ely really helped me. Unfortunately, I had an A all semester until the final. I think the Chemistry department at WVU is very flawed. The final is worth 25% of your grade and it covers an absurd amount of information. Dr. Ely is a great professor, but the information for this course is a lot. You HAVE to study 24/7
I felt that this class, which should normally be difficult, was made a lot easier by Dr. Ely and the way she clearly explained the material. From her recommending that you printing out the lecture slides to the frequent handout and homework practice, there are many avenues to ensure understanding and make the studying process easier.
Most of your grade relies on exams (final is worth 25% of your grade), so you really have to study. She makes you print out her lectures so if you do not have a printer you have to pay to print them unless you have an iPad. I feel as if she focuses too much on certain topics, and breeze over others that probably needed more time. She is good tho!
This class was truly difficult for me however, due to Dr. Ely's amazing teaching abilities, I was able to pass. She makes it her mission to be accessible to students and truly cares about each individual student's success in her class.
Dr. Ely is an amazing professor. The class is tough, and requires a lot of work to do well, but she is so helpful and truly wants to see her students do well.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. She knows what she's talking about and teaches the material well. She's accessible outside of class and truly cares about her students. I wouldn't necessarily say the class is easy but if you invest the time and do well on the exams, you'll be fine. Highly recommend.
My queen. My fav professor. Gives extra credit each week and is more than willing to help students. Take her if you have the chance. You will not regret it. She tells you exactly what will be on quizzes and exams. Very straightforward.
Professor Ely is AWESOME!!!!! She has made me love chemistry again. Even the hardest of concepts that she presents make clear sense once she is finished lecturing. Amazing communicator, thorough explanations of information, and does not "sugar coat" anything. She WANTS her students to earn the best grade possible!! Make sure she is your professor!!
Chem 115 is a very hard class and Dr. Ely makes it even harder. Her exams are 15 questions long which makes it almost impossible to get an A or B. She can sometimes skip over important parts of a lecture that she assumes you to know. Dont make the mistake of having a hard professor for a hard class.
Dr.Ely is the best! She is very helpful and is good about answering any questions you have about material. Definitely take her if you have the chance.
Did not provide hardly any resources that we could use outside of class. If you ever miss a class you basically just have to hope to have someone else to help fill you in on the notes. Some of the exam averages from my class were in the 60s and her words were "you guys did well on this one".
She is Very Rude !!! Stay away from her.!!! Take it this Lab from different professor that will be good choice.
I've always been rough with chem and professor Ely changed that. She goes through all the problems very nice so that you can understand. She does lots of practice in class. Homework correlates with the lectures. quizzes and exams are all fairly easy if you practice outside of class. Both the quizzes and exams are a big chunk of you grade overall
I took Ely for Chem 115 and wish I could take her for more classes. She gave homework once a week that had multiple attempts, so homework was an easy grade. Her tests were very similar to the homework and quizzes. And she was very open to helping students if you came to her office hours. She wanted to see you succeed.
Dr. Ely was a great professor, and her lectures were clear, efficient, and not boring. She was very nice and seemed passionate about Chemistry. Test questions were similar to the questions on practice exams and homework, so make sure you understand them.
Ely is a good professor. Very clear in how she teaches and will always answer your questions. Print off the lecture notes before you get to class, they are easy to work with than a notebook.
Ah, Dr. Melissa Ely and her CHEM 115 class! The lectures were just bursting with energy. And let's not forget the heartfelt congratulations for the jaw-dropping 60 exam average. Bravo, indeed!
A lot of material is covered in class so it is important to be there and to pay attention. She always tells people about exam review sessions and tutoring sessions. Study hard for the tests.
Loved this professor! Her notes and lectures were great! She provides a lot of optional practice that prepared me for exams. Wish I could have her for every chem course.
I loved Professor Ely. If you have to make Chem 115, make sure she is your professor!!! Do not skip class. Takes attendance and participation with iClicker. She's extremely helpful and clear during her lectures. One homework per week, 4 exams. She's an amazing professor.
I cannot say enough good things about Professor Ely! She does a great job at keeping a 150+ person lecture interesting and energetic. So so many good practice quizzes, handouts, and lecture sets you can use, which really helped. This semester she offered office hours over zoom which was really helpful as well.
I loved her lectures, they were thorough and had several walk through examples. Homework is due every Sunday so don't leave it till the last minute or you'll want to cry. Chem is harm but she makes it understandable. There's a lot of memorization but as long as you stay on top of it you'll be chillin.
Dr. Ely was a fabulous professor, I'd recommend her a million times if I could. Her classes were so fun and engaging. There's a ton of material to cover but she does a great job of helping you learn and apply it. Just go to class, pay attention, and make sure you really understand each homework assignment and you'll do great.
Amazing professor that thoroughly explained lecture material and was friendly with all her students. Go to every lecture, study consistently, and the class will be manageable.
Her lecture was very fast. Very test heavy class. Graded harshly on exam and lab. I would have take from different professors. Exam is hard average score was around 60 percent. She Take this class very seriously
She's a great teacher. Is very clear with her lectures. The homework reflects what is on the tests. She gives extra credit.
I really enjoyed Dr. Ely's class. Class is lecture heavy, and every class she will explain the theory behind a topic, and then work out practice problems so you can see it in action. She was clear, concise and made sense to me. I've heard others say she moves too fast and needs to spend more time on each problem, but I never had an issue.
Melissa Ely has been the best chemistry professor I have had yet. There is a lot of content and it is very lecture-heavy, but, she is very clear about her grading criteria, works out multiple example problems for each topic, and explains each topic very thoroughly. If you ever need help outside of class she is there. Take her if you can!!
Professor Ely is fantastic - her lectures are super clear and she provides tons of practice to really drive the concepts home. I used unstuck ai alongside the class materials and found it super helpful for studying. Definitely take this course if you can!
