She was pretty much the best english teacher I have ever had. She definitely helped me to better myself as a writer. #1!!!!
Very nice and extremely helpful in building a paper. If you can't meet her in office hours she makes arrangements to meet other times. To succeed in class you must participate in class disscussions. Essays are fun to write and she gives great advice on building outlines, rough drafts, and gives great feedback when she grades papers.
Excelent Prof! Fundamentals of writing class, but you feel like is is a creative writing class. Very helpful, and tutors in the writing center as well. Recipe for success: Have your paper reviewed by and get help with the re-write from the same person that will be grading it!!
Excellent teacher! I took the online class and had just returned to school after many years. This teacher was always helpful, positive and took the fear out of learning. Grades and responds to email quickly. I only wish she taught 102.
Easier in the beginning of class. Picky with MLA format on papers, will affect your grade! cared more so about format rather than content. nice teacher, fun.
English is one of my least favorite subjects, and I was afraid that I'd do bad in the class. But Melissa was very helpful, explained things well, and just plain made English Class fun! Plus, I got an A in the class!
Melissa makes english seem fun and really helps you as a writer! She is very approachable and helpful, and I highly recommend her!
Best instructor I have ever had. If you are willing to do the work she will help you every step of the way
AWESOME. APPROACHABLE.
Melissa was very helpful and very on top of things..I highly recommend for English 101 on-line course she was great she was always available and always graded on time. She will help you out a lot if need be. She was a great on-line teacher
Melissa helped me discover my problems with writing. She was extremely helpful; she helps you whenever you ask. She keeps you interested. Melissa will help you become a better writer. She does give you alot of work, but it is worth it!
Melissa is an excellent teacher. She gives a lot of work, but is very clear on how to do it. Melissa is very friendly and approachable, and she expects the very best out of her students. English 101 Online was my best learning experience to date. I recommend that you take this class it will be worth your time.
Excellent instructor, well organized and helpful!
She is a good teacher. i would definitely take her again. She is clear on directions and when she isn't she clarifies. She mostly did environmental stuff for our papers but it was a fun class!
Really funny, easy to understand. Cant believe she gave me an A. I thought i did horrible! Great teacher....
Melissa is a wonderful teacher, she is there to teach, not to just get paid. She loves english and it shows. She is my second favorite teacher in my book next to my Bio/Chem teacher. i highly suggest her, you will learn alot from her, you wont regret having her as a teacher. She is also the sweetest person you will ever meet & is not judgemental.=)
Keeps things fun. Clear and helpful. Has useful and interesting assignments.
Thanks to Melissa, I look foward to class everyday! In addition to her charisma and wit, she is extremely helpful and insightful. The class is balanced, structured...oh yeah and fun!
This teacher is amazing; read this carefully. If you love, or even like writing, take a class from her. Don't even hesitate, move things around in your schedule if you have to. What she has to say is so positive and helpful that I don't know if anyone cares quite as much as she does. She sees into your writing, and she appreciates everything.
Super awsome would recommend her to anyone who struggles with English she will get you taken care of.sooooo yeah
She's pretty nice, she kinda gives a lot of extra homework ... But I guess it helps you develop a better essay. In this course you'll have to write two essays. & she passed me with an A in the class, so I would recommend her!:)
Such a nice teacher. I love how many comments she makes on your paper when she grades it. You can tell she actually cares.
mellisa is an amazing teacher she always tries to help everyone, and goes out of he way to do so. she made a crappy subject for me fun! and that is hard to do I would recommend her to anyone
I took her online course. It was a lot of homework and interactions amongst peers in discussion board and groups, but well worth the effort in the long run. Pay strict attention to due dates and requirements. She is quick to respond to questions. Relies heavily upon the Rules for Writers by, Diana Hacker. Fair to easy grader. Excellent!!
I've taken her for both 098 & 101, and I'm taking her for 102. She is without a doubt, the best English teacher I have ever had! She's very helpful and patient with every student, and will take time out of her personal time to help you. Take her for English! You'll enjoy it!
She's a good teacher but will call someone out in front of the class and make you feel stupid. Even if you were just asking a question or answering one.
Goes by first name in class, very informal. Low stress environment in her 102 class. The homework applies to the instruction, and everything adheres to the main assignment. And that chili pepper isn't there for nothing!
Hands down best instructor I have ever had. Extremely available, and gives precise feedback. I reccomend her to EVERYONE taking anything she teaches. You will not be dissapointed!
Such a great teacher! I loved the little award ceremony at the end of the quarter.
I signed up for the class because I needed a lit class and love science fiction. Favara was an effective discussion facilitator but I feel like the class could have been more guided. It relied entirely on class discussion with no real lectures. The reading was intense at times as we read dense novels, each in a about a week and a half.
Great teacher and very helpful... this is coming from a person who hates english lol. she was very wonderful!!! ^_^ last day of class she brings treats!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this teacher!! My 1st quarter of college and i was so happy i chose her for ENGL. Best teacher iv EVER had. Shes very strict on what she does and always on point but shes very motivating; trust me youll have fun in her class everyday as long as she sees you actually trying! .. Remember to turn in your essays ON TIME!!
Professor Favara was by far my favorite instructor so far. The thing I love most about her is her constant encouragement. She has something positive to say about everyone's work. Her class is easy to follow and actually very fun. If you love to read and write I definitely recommend her Literature class!
Melissa's online instructions and syllabus are very clear; you know just what's expected of you. There's a lot of work, but each step directly relates to final essays and helps with your success. She is very responsive, helpful, and encouraging. I learned a lot and feel competent about writing MLA papers thanks to her class.
at first i really didnt like her b/c i had to re-write a majority of my papers. but we had little meetings before class to go over my paper and i ended up making an A on all of them after re-writing them. She is really nice and very helpful. i will deff be taking her for 102
Melissa is a wonderful teacher and person! Super sweet and very understanding. One of Clark's Finest!
Melissa is great. She's clear and always helps students. Doesn't miss class. By far my favorite professor. Do the readings, they do help. You have to go to class or you're screwed. Three papers throughout the quarter. She goes over everything and makes it relatable, making comparisons to modern things. She's funny. Usually hyped on coffee :)
Melissa is by far the best English teacher I have taken since I started at Clark. She is very clear with everything she explains and expects for class. Attendance is very important, because you learn a lot everyday in her class and she makes sure to be here everyday. TAKE HER SHES GREAT!!!
Melissa is an amazing teacher! Seriously, if you can get her get her now! She's very helpful and mostly always in a good mood. She does a lot to make sure you have enough information and support to write good essays and makes learning new crap a little more entertaining, I would take her again if I could.
In all honesty, I DON'T LIKE to read, and in this class that's all you do, but the thing is, the reading is so wacko and crazy and weird and odd that it's sooooo interesting! This teacher makes me laugh so hard and is just a great time. The time flies by so fast in her class and you actually WANT to participate in class. TAKE HER!You wont regret it
By far the best english teacher!! LOVE LOVE LOVE her, shes awesome and made things very clear and great sense of humor. She helps you pass english and learn to like it. I would highly recommend her to anyone!!!! Shes awesome!!!
She is extremely helpful, super sweet and corky! All around fun.
Very nice
I have taken two of Melissa's lit classes and she is by far one of my favourite profs at Clark. She encourages you to open your mind and broaden your horizons through literature and human nature. I would highly recommend taking any of her classes. I have considered getting a minor in lit because I enjoyed the classes so much.
Melissa is great! She assigned some dense (but interesting) reading material. Assignments were easy, we didn't have to write many essays, and we had only one exam. I don't think she's a hard grader as long as you present your own ideas with support. She's funny, intelligent, and entertaining. Lectures and class discussions were thought-provoking.
This class was fun, and not to difficult.
Melissa was one of the best English teacher i have had so far! After taking English 098 and English 101 with her gave me better understanding of English. I also had a death in the family while taking her class and missed several days but she helped me catch up and was always flexible with her office hours. There was never a dull moment in her class
She is a spunky professor who is very passionate about every subject she teaches. Extremely knowledgeable, super quirky, and lots of fun! Participation matters to here, but I always enjoying being a part of her classes.
Just do the reading and write down the whole lecture. Almost no papers or tests. Tests and papers you just rewrite what she said and analyze it. Really interesting and educated. Sometimes watch TV or movies in class, always applicable and fun. Lots of humor and history knowledge. -detective lit class
Great teacher.
WOULD RECOMMEND!!!! Probably my favorite teacher. She's so fun in class and makes the discussions enjoyable. There is a lot of reading but the assignments are easy and the finals are EXTREMELY easy. Do the readings and it's an easy A. You can also tell she cares how you do in the class and does all she can to get you to pass. Love love love her.
She was one of my favorite teachers at Clark. She gave the best lectures and her assignments were fun. I took her for English 98, 101, and 102. I would absolutely take another English class from her.
Very knowledgeable about this particular niche of literature (in a snobby accent). She's funny and the class is pretty easy. Lots of class discussion, simple assignments. Do the reading and you'll be fine. Quizzes fairly often but only to make sure you read. You need the textbook and might even end up keeping it to read the stories!
I took Ms. Favara for British Literature and I thought it was interesting, and I'm a business major! She clearly is passionate about the subject and is more than willing to help after class or outside of class. Follows syllabus very well, and plan to read (It's not that much but you should not skim). Grades tests and papers fairly easy and is nice
She loves her job, and you can tell. The course will seem intense at first, but she is such a fair teacher. Her class structure is logical and she will never have surprises. She goes off of the syllabus schedule and maps out her assignments with breathing room. MEET WITH HER FOR ESSAY REVIEWS, she gives great feedback and it guarantees an A!
While you do have to put significant effort into the work, it is not unreasonable and she never wastes time. If she has nothing more to say for the day, then we get to leave early and there is no busy work. Also, USE OFFICE HOURS!! She told me exactly what my essays needed in a positive and uplifting way, which allowed me to get excellent grades.
Amazing at her job, super accessible, and is very passionate
Best teacher ever! I wish I had her for every English class, not just Detective Fiction!
At first, I was intimidated by Melissa. There is a LOT of reading. BUT, as the term went on, she became super empathetic towards our work load and just a really awesome person in general. Discussions were light hearted and you can tell she is very passionate with what she does. Don't skip class!! P.S. she makes BOMB cookies at the end of the term
Great instructor. She really cares about all of her students. She'll learn your name and genuinely take interest in your success. Accessible outside of class, fair grader. Do your work and show up and you're bound to do fine, and probably learn something, too.
Absolutely great teacher and very understanding. I didn't expect to enjoy detective fiction at first but she really manages to get you engaged. The class starts off intimidating and only gets easier, shes also very understanding about heavy courseload and will adjust it if needed (in my experience). Also watched movies and ate cookies, 11 / 10 prof
Best class i have taken so far, you can tell she loves her job and the subject she teaches. If you're not a very big reader or finding yourself struggling to read large amounts in a small time period this class is not for you. She grades fairly and always gives you feedback to better your score next time.
She is such a great teacher, and actually made the class interesting. Just be sure to read your book each night and do the responses or you will quickly get behind.
Ok, She is literally my fav. prof. of all time! She makes you feel so smart and your class style is fun, interactive and entertaining. I never wanted to skip class. I am so sad this class is over, I would take it again just for fun. She loves literature and she makes you love it too, just by the way she talks about it. She makes old books new&sexy!
Melissa is not an easy grader, but she wants you to succeed; she is not one of those instructors who goes out of their way to make their grading rubrics hard. As long as you show up regularly for class & try, & come prepared even if it's not perfect or 100%, you WILL get credit. She's very organized & does a great job of creating community in class
If you are already not convinced that Favara is a great professor from the other ratings, I do not know what else to say. She is very interactive with her online classes and makes homework fun to do. I have hated reading my whole life and dreaded the day I had to take a literature class, but because of her, I am taking the best online class ever!
Shes an extremely caring teacher, she does give you a lot of work and you do need to show up to class, but she will help you whenever needed. She loves her job and you can totally tell.
She is an amazing teacher. As long as you do the work when she assigns it the class is easy. Also her tests are open note and open book so make sure you have the book and your notes handy for the final and midterm.
Ms. Favara is one of the best professors I've had so far at Clark. She is very passionate about her classes and very caring when it comes to her students. Participation is key when it comes to group discussions and it definitely helps to do the reading before class.
Super kind and helpful teacher! I failed eng 101 the first time i took it so I was nervous to take it again, but she taught me so much and made it fun!
I CANNOT say enough good things about her! She is very knowledgeable and intelligent. She gives amazing feedback and really helps you grow as a writer. I had to withdraw from another professor's English 102 class, but this class is manageable with her! You learn a lot and her class is so structured. Uses canvas, so that's a plus.
Professor Favara is hands down the best teacher I've had. You have to put in work but if you do all the assignments, read from the textbook, and watch the videos provided it will all make sense and you are guaranteed to get a good grade. She also holds office hours which helps tremendously. Use all the resources available. She is awesome!
Great professor, class is easy if you know what you are doing and doesn't require much work, but at the same time she provides plenty of workshops and points to receive feedback to make sure your grade is as good as it can be.
Detective Fiction class. Be sure to not only read all of the books, but to also take fairly thorough notes. While the quizzes don't ask for extremely specific detail, some questions may be details that are kinda important but you're expected to remember anyway. NO SKIM READING, I.E. READING WILL TAKE UP TON OF TIME.
All around one of the best teachers I have had at Clark College. She is so sweet and loves to talk to you about her dogs or vast collection of typewriters. Gives excellent feedback, has a clear grading criteria, and lets you makeup one essay and one quiz. No tests, just 3 essays make the majority of your grade in this class.
I had Mel for British Lit and Detective Fiction. I'm at WSUV now, but let me tell you- I MISS HER! She is one of the best professors I've ever had and I really wish I could still take her classes. She's an awesome woman who's a blast to be around and really knows her stuff. I learned more in her classes than I have in any other English course.
Favara is one of my favorite professors ever! She is kind & hilarious! Don't be afraid to speak up in her class because that makes for the most interesting discussions! She chooses a wide variety of texts for us to discuss. By being open minded & putting in the time to read you will definitely succeed in this course! Pay attention to readings!
Once in a lifetime, you meet a teacher with the care and determination that Favara has and it is amazing! If you do the reading and take time to prepare for class (even if it's a skim through) you will be able to contribute to some amazing conversations! She always wants to hear what her students have to say and she has our best interest at heart!
This class was very easy. You read 2 stories, have 3 discussions and 1 quiz a week. Although that seems like a lot, it's very doable. Discussion posts are pretty short (150 words) with easy to answer questions. The final is an essay that was 600-900 words. She always comments on your posts, and I believe she grades discussions on participation.
Melissa Favara was a great teacher for the most part. Gave good feedback and was thorough, but when I asked for help for the Final, she almost refused and never answered back. Mind you our final is the majority of our grade and she had a lot of no credit assignments. Overall she was okay not my favorite Professor but got the job done.
I dreaded this class initially because I don't like reading. BUT Professor Favara is an INCREDIBLE woman. She made every lecture exciting and really knew how to engage the class. She is truly a one of a kind educator, and cares so much for her students ("humans" she calls us). You are in very good hands if you take a class with her as your teacher
You just need to show up, do the reading and you will do great in this class. She really cares for her students, and will care a lot about you if you show that you're engaged!
Melissa is a gem! Yes, she assigns work that sometimes may be challenging but! She'll do her best to make sure you pass, she has immense care for her students. She makes the class enjoyable.
Prof Favara is one of those rare professors that actually cares about her students and is willing to help them!! She has a way of making everyone feel respected and important. The class takes effort but isn't super difficult and you learn a lot; I never liked English too much but I'll genuinely miss her class.
I absolutely loved this class. I took this for my literature course and found that it was more fun than work. Melissa is so friendly and passionate about detective fiction. There are 4 small books required for this course. We read some short essays and stories along with 2 novels. There are 2 discussions and one 6-8 question quiz each week.
Melissa is an awesome teacher. Her online course was well organized and I was rarely confused about what I was expected to do. She is clearly very thoughtful and cares about her students. Would highly recommend!
I took Melissa twice, both in Winter 2019 for ENGL101 and Fall 2019 for ENGL102. She was my favorite professor throughout Clark and she really cared about her students' success. She really connects with her students and helps them throughout the term. Instead of just ghosting with emails, she'll write back in a positive manner! 10/10 Professor!
Professor Favara was an extremely caring professor. Her assignments made her expectations very clear and she always provided good feedback.
I have studied ENGL098 with Melissa before. She is a freat teacher, understanding and helpful for everything you need to ask. When I studied ENGL101, I think that I must attend the class that have her as an instructor.
Melissa is a literal blessing of a teacher. She was really kind, easily accessible if you have questions, and she gives great feedback on every assignment. As long as you put some kind of effort into your work you will be well on your way to an A. I would definitely recommend.
Please please take her! She is the kindest prof I've had so far at Clark. She gives a reasonable amount of work, always keeps class interesting, and responds to every single assignment with detailed feedback. This class was super refreshing and I wish there were more classes that I needed that had her as the prof so I could take her again.
English 101 was my first college level English class and it was online. From my experience she replies to emails in a timely manner. The main issue is there was a lot of daily work. There's two essays during the quarter and the final is a essay. If you have a busy schedule take a different professor.
Professor Favara is a gem, she really wants you to succeed and will respond to emails in a timely matter. Her detective fiction class is fun and she responds to every comment in the discussions and gives great feedback.
I liked the textbook she used, and the way she taught writing. She taught us how to write on a deeper, rhetorical level, which really helped deepen by knowledge passed a high school level. She's caring, helpful, and she does a great job of explaining assignments. Asking for help/further explanation really goes a long way!
She was my first professor at Clark College and I'm glad it was her. She really does care and all of the work is definitely doable, not too time-consuming. I would definitely recommend her to future ENG 101 students!
she's a good teacher but super patronizing towards students
Melissa was FANTASTIC. Detective Fiction is by far my favorite Engl. class that I've taken, and it's in part because of her passion for the subject. If you throw yourself into the content, you'll love it. Discussion posts were plentiful, but do a thorough job and you'll do fine. Melissa answers fairly quickly and is willing to meet on zoom to help.
This class in person was probably one of my favorite classes I have ever taken in school. Melissa was super nice, funny, and cared about each of us in her class and would always respond to any questions you might have outside of class very fast.
She gave homework every single day and did not thoroughly explain any of the assignments.
I took Favaras ENG 101 and 99 class online and she was an amazing professor! I was able to take her class while having a full time job no problem. Her assignments are explained thoroughly and she always asks for students to reach out if they have questions. Genuinely nice person who cares about her students. Definitely recommend her for any class!
Melissa Favara was the best professor I have ever had. She was extremely helpful and caring. She is very accommodating as well to personal and medical issues. We have one to two discussions every week about the assignment which was always due on Sunday. It was a fun and easy class and Melissa is very easy to get along with.
I took her online English 101 class and her in-person English 99 class which is a support class. That Eng 99 class was fantastic!! Melissa was fun % is very kind towards late work. If you just show up & try you will easily pass this class. I became a better writer, reader, & overall student too. She gave us lots of college, study, & life advice.
