Good teacher and an easy course.
teaches straight from the book! she had a pop quiz once a week so attendance was important. if you bring your book to class you can follow and highlight everything she has said which makes life easier. i really learned a lot from this class as boring as it could be sometimes.
Only reason to go to class is for the pop quizzes. Otherwise, lecture is useless. Some believe the exams are tough, and long ( usually 100 questions), but she pulls no punches on them. Just study
She's so enthusiastic, passionate, and interesting! I went to class for all the stories, videos, and real-life examples that made the class exciting.
she can't teach.
Prof Fierke is really enthusiastic and incredibly nice. She does a good job making the material interesting and engaging, though there is a tremendous amount of material to learn for the class. Expect a number of pop quizzes, so always have your notes on you. Shes does drop 3 or so. She makes the class much more enjoyable than it could be.
She relies very heavily on the textbook and generally gives you everything that you'll need to know via powerpoints. Pay attention to the things she says but doesn't put on the powerpoints. Those questions go on her quizzes. She is a very fun and interesting professor but tends to review the textbook more than teach. LOVES any strange insects.
Amazing professor. She will do anything to help her students understand the material. As long as you attend lecture and pay attention, you can't fail this course. I wish more professors were as easy to talk to.
Excited about the class but does her lectures are scattered and unhelpful. Tests are long and different from lectures. Pop quizzes once a week so go to class.
Dr.Fierke is a pretty good professor and very down to earth. However she doesn't teach the course too well for the information you need to know for the exams and quizzes. Most of her lectures however do give the overall idea you need. But you must read the textbook to succeed in this class!!! The textbook is the best source. She gives pop quizzes a
Very enthusiastic, great teacher. Easy to approach and very willing to help anyone.
It was a blast being in her class! Everything positive other people are saying is true, she's personable and makes the course a lot of fun. As long as you put in the time and effort, you will do great. And yes, you need to get the book and at least do the end of chapter questions (these will be on the exams).
Miss Frizzle-esque, she is very enthusisastic and hard. Wears the same pair of red gorrilla shoes every day, and can be seen biking to class in them. Awesome and eccentric teacher.
Fierke is a pretty fun teacher. However she relies ENTIRELY on the textbook. Nothing from the lectures are what she expects on the exams and there are open note pop quizzes like every 2-3 weeks so you have to go to lecture. Unfortunately every single ESF student has to take this class. But if you study the textbook, you should be good.4 exams 12 assignments and 6 quizzes.
If you don't got to class and don't do the online hw you will fail. She reads her lecture slides in class but expects you to know ALL of the minute details for Exams. Tough grader. You must take class. it will be easier if you do hw online but still a very difficult class. I studied long hours and still ended with below a 3.0.
I was glad to have Dr.Fierke as one of my first professors at ESF! She was so enthusiastic, amiable, down-to-earth, and she REALLY does want everyone to do well! She genuinely cares and ALWAYS there to help. You just need to try (actually study) and want to do well yourself. I really enjoyed the course.
Dr. Fierke is a passionate professor, because of her excitement and intellect the class is a joy. It is a very difficult course with lots of material covered, but Dr. Fierke is very approachable and willing to offer help.
One of the best professors I had at ESF. Genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She goes above and beyond with any student who asks for help. Her enthusiasm and passion makes learning fun. A life-changing professor and class.
Dr. Fierke is an amazing Professor; she is passionate about what she teaches, she is there for students who are struggling, she is involved in many programs on campus, and she genuinely cares about her students. She teaches a difficult course, but the knowledge you get from her class will help you through your followig years at ESF.
Dr. Fierke is incredibly enthusiastic. It is obvious that she loves biology and that she loves teaching. The class is a little difficult but she covers material well and makes fair tests.
Dr. Fierke is an awesome professor she was always there when I had questions or problems, and explained challenging materials in an enthusiastic and clear manner.I liked that she followed the text book for our online homework's.I felt well prepared for taking higher level bio courses at ESF after I took this course, Overall she is a great professor.
Dr. Fierke is very knowledgeable and dedicated professor. When it comes to a large and info-rich course like biology its hard to get a fully comprehensive teacher who is upbeat and friendly as well, but Dr. Fierke is all three. While her grading can be tough and her tests rigorous, they are always fair, and there is always plenty of help available.
Dr. Fierke pushs her students, but is always fair with her grades. Much help given, amazing class and professor!
Dr. Fierke is very enthusiastic and it is contagious. She always involves interesting articles, songs, videos and stories to help students relate to the material. Even though the course is hard and demanding she is a great, motivational and fair teacher.
Dr. Fierke's passion for teaching and the subject are obvious. She is always enthusiastic, upbeat, and dedicated. She goes out of her way to get to know her students, despite the class size, and tries to appreciate students who put in extra effort. The class is hard, but it makes students more prepared for later bio courses.
Dr. Fiekre is honestly one of the best professors at ESF. Not only does she have a passion for the subject, but she also loves to have every student succeed. She provides more then enough opportunities for students to get extra help if they need any, and is always open to any questions. As long as you study and put in effort, you will succeed.
I really loved Dr. Fierke's biology class. She always incorporated outside issues related to what we were learning which kept the material interesting. While she is hard on the students as she wants us to succeed, Professor Fierke is willing to explain anything as long as you're willing to learn and seek her out for help!
Dr. Fierke's enthusiasm was inspiring. As a freshman at ESF she is an encouraging start to the college experience. The only things she loves more than teaching is the subject of biology itself. She is very approachable and invites questions. She is strict with her grading policy but is very professional.
Dr. Fierke is a stellar professor. She knows her subject matter forwards and backwards, is willing and able to answer any questions (and her warmth and genuine compassion makes her approachable), and she exhibits enthusiasm for both the subject matter and relaying it to the students. Grading is tough, but always fair. A+ overall teacher!
Dr. Fierke is a delightfully challenging professor who pushes you to excel in biology. Her enthusiasm is contagious! She is always available for extra help and cares immensely about her students.
Professor Fierke has a genuine love for teaching and interest in her students. The course is challenging b/c she pushes us to be better knowing that to slack off does no one any good. Always available to speak to and always ready to help.
Professor Fierke has a genuine love for biology that is inspiring and infectious. She goes the extra mile to get students interested in the material, and I found the lectures to be fascinating. I learned an incredible amount in Gen Bio I, and I would consider her course to be an indispensable foundation to studying the life sciences.
Dr. Fierke loves biology and she loves teaching. Yes, the class is difficult. You really have to put the time in to study and do the MasteringBiology homework. If you go to class, do your homework, and study for the tests, you're good. Dr. Fierke is clear in lectures, and willing to answer questions if you have them. The PowerPoints are great!
Dr. Fierke is an excellent professor who has crafted General Biology into an enjoyable and memorable course. Her genuine personality and enthusiasm for biology made a challenging course doable. I highly recommend Professor Fierke’s course to anyone that wants a solid foundation for upper level bio courses.
The online homeworks are a great tool for reviewing the textbook and getting ready for an exam. She does a wonderful job of preparing student for the rest of their SUNY-ESF career. Pop-quizzes helps to keep attendance up. She insists on getting to know her students and is very helpful. The 1st homework is about yourself, so she can get to know you.
You could do very well on homeworks and quizzes and do okay on tests, and still end up with a bad grade. Students all rely on the recitation sessions notes, but then she throws us off by putting on a completely different question. She is better off teaching a higher up Biology course, rather than a Gen-Bio required freshman course.
Fierke was awesome. She was incredibly enthusiastic when teaching and never had a problem making even the most mundane topics sound interesting. I'm not a bio person at all, but I definitely enjoyed this class.
Dr. Fierke is an amazing teacher. She is very enthusiastic about what she teachers which gives students an incentive to learn. She also truly cares about her student's education and wants to ensure that they are retaining the necessary material. She challenges her students, so hard work and dedication is required if you want to do well.
It's obvious that Fierke is a very intelligent scientist, but for a general biology course it's not necessary. She races through three-five chapters in a powerpoint for lectures, making it extremely difficult to keep up w/ notes and listen to her go on about plant reproduction. She has review sessions that the TA's run. And her tests are very hard!
The Dr. may be a great scientist, but I think she is out of touch w/what constitutes an appropriate work load for a 101 class. It goes beyond just weeding out freshman or lazy students; her expectations are unrealistic & discouraging to students in Bio b/c it's required or their passion is other than bio. It doesn't promote learning, just cramming.
Extreme workload. Unrealistically difficult exams. I hated this course...
Fierke was a great professor who was genuinely interested in the class and her students. Some people are saying that the class was too hard for a 101 level course, but people are forgetting this is college, not high school. As for her going to fast in class to take notes, I suggest taking them before class (she puts them all up online before class)
Not enough time to finish tests and she can't admit when she's wrong. Also, way too paranoid that students will cheat. Take biology at your community college, not b/c you're lazy, but b/c you don't need this class to monopolize your precious time.
she believes that all of her students are cheating. If you spell the same word wrong as someone else you will be called in for academic integrity and she will never admit she is wrong. She is a horrible teacher, doesnt care about her students, moves way too fast and she does not teach, she only reads off the power point take the class else ware
Very smart women but horrible teacher. Just reads her powerpoints and has you do online work.
She is a very smart individual, but is a horrible teacher. She reads her powerpoint going into no depth and will not explain because we cover chapters in one power point alone. If you do not finish a lecture that is too bad your still responsible for the material even though she over loads her lectures.
Unnecessarily difficult! Way too hard for a 101 course. I had a really bad high school biology course so I was very lost. I went to workshops once a week, tutoring and studied often but still barely passed or failed the exams.
Dr. Fierke will guide you to information, it is your job to acquire it yourself. This is a woman that is as passionate as they come in terms of teaching, and to do well in her course, you must show that same passion.
Way too difficult for 100-level. So much content that she never went into detail in lecture. Test questions on nerdy things that she may not have mentioned in lecture. She basically thrives off of student failure by making things so tricky that even if you know it inside and out you'll still get the questions wrong. Mastering bio boosts grade!
This class was eye opening for the rest of my college experience. She grades tough and is very suspicious of cheating. Come to class or you may miss one of her pop quizzes
Really challenging course. Expect to work hard, but if you do, you'll have a super strong base to work from. Fierke gives you a lot of resources to help get you through. If you make use of those you'll be okay. Fierke's a good professor and she genuinely cares about her students...
Taking bio at SU because I'm not a bio major and this class was insane
Paranoid and suspicious of cheating. Loads powerpoint presentations with absurd "knowledge" that students must memorize. Gives frequent pop quizzes with information that often could not tangibly be memorized, so you frantically search through notes. Gives zeros and negative grades. Offended by the term "professor." "Professors" are below her level.
Lots of material is covered each lecture so print out power points or write the notes before class and add extra information that she adds throughout the lecture, and pop quizzes are on days that the power point is short and they are open notes. Workshops may help you, they didn't help me much except for right before the exam. Good Luck
Dr. Fierke has given me more opportunities than any person at ESF and for that I am extremely grateful. She wants to help people but, you have to meet her half-way. Work hard, do as she says, and be prepared for some tough grading. Just to reiterate, she is the best professor I have had the privilege of working for and I will never forget that.
GO TO CLASS. Dr. Fierke doesn't take attendance, but it's basically impossible to do well if you don't show up. There's a ton of content, so I recommend recording lectures on your phone and listening to them later, especially because alot of the mc questions on the test are in what she says, not what's on the powerpoint. Also, go to workshops!!!!
Ridiculous class filled with slides of information you memorize for no reason. I am not a bio major but I did a lot of studying and went to almost every lecture and still hardly passed the class.
If you plan on passing, you need to listen to every tiny detail she mentions and look over any resource you can find relevant to the material in the course. Her lectures cover a lot of material in one day and they are very hard to learn in.
SUNY ESF doesn't make it easy for freshmen and this is a class that will try to get rid of you. Probably the most interesting class I took my freshman year and I learned a lot from Fierke. Her tests are hard and you have to work for every point. Get a good grade on the first test because it gets rapidly harder from there.
I just finished Dr. Fierke's class. It is tough, but with effort it IS possible to earn an A. Exams are hard (especially exams 2 and 4). To maximize grade it is best to earn full credit on mastering biology and the assignments. Pop quizzes do not count for as much as the other reviews make it seem. Very nice professor. Workshops are helpful.
This class was an extremely hard freshman biology class. Some tips for future students are: take your time doing the mastering biology, show up to class with all of your notes for the pop quizzes, and study as much as you can for the tests because they are very difficult.
This is one of the hardest classes I have taken at ESF, but it is not impossible to do well in. Go to class with your notes written, and record the lecture on your phone to listen to later. Go at LEAST one workshop a week, read the textbook and show up to her office hours. If you show her you are putting forth effort, she will help you out a lot!
I got a 60.2% in class and I've always been good at general science classes. Passing is 60%. That should tell you enough about the class. If that isn't clutch I don't know what is.
Hard material but if you study , tests aren't hard. Overall, hard but do-able class.
Homegirl is mad nice but not going to lie, her tests are hard. If you don't study, trust me you will fail. Like most people have said, her class is hard, but not impossible to get a good grade on. The final exam and Unit 3 exam are one of the two easiest.
Fierke is a wonderfully caring human being, and really makes an effort to know the students and reach out to those that are struggling. The course itself is HARD! Theres a lot of content that is only went over once, then you have to memorize it on your own. There isnt time to go over it twice in lecture. The exams are HARD. YOU MUST STUDY!
You learn so much in this class, but the tests are hard. The best way to pass this class is to try your best on the Mastering Biology homework with cheating, so you are better prepared for the test.
Fierke genuinely cares about graduate students and has been a great asset to my research.
You learn way to much in this class. There is alot of homework so be prepared. The test are super hard. She does really care about her students, as long as you go to her office hour you will pass the class.
I personally did not enjoy this class or the teacher. She was not very kind to students outside of her program and expected us to spend alot of time on only her class. If you're in any engineering major, it is very difficult to keep up to her standards.
As a dedicated and hardworking student, I firmly believe that this class was made unnecessarily difficult for 100 level. Although I succeeded in the class, I spent way too much time on assignments for a class unrelated to my major. Dr. Fierke holds her students to unfair standards and expects them to spend countless hours on work for her class.
This class is not freshman friendly. I come from a poor community, I've never experienced a campus like ESF/SU, and so the first day of class it was like I was hit with a hurricane. Sign up for this, look out for that, here are schedules on this, etc. Be ready to shell out $ just to do hw, and get rude replies when you kindly ask for help.
Lectures are not very helpful. You can get all the information from the slides and learn it better on your own. Very well educated professor but not the best teacher. Moves very fast in lecture and not very helpful.
When I took the class, I had to get Mastering Biology, a program that tests you on chapters. She assigns them a day before EVERY lecture, so you'll have to read THREE CHAPTERS A WEEK and RETAIN THAT INFO. She's incredibly lazy for relying on MB to do that, because it takes up so much time you wont be able to ACTUALLY study.
Lots of work, but shes super passionate about the class!!! Its definitely the weed out class and a lot of work, but you can tell how much she cares about the topic. Really understanding if you go to office hours too :)
Not helpful, very rude when you ask for help, not understanding, hard material with lots of homework, sets you up to fail, she wants you to fail (gets enjoyment when people don't pass her class). Just reads off of PowerPoint slides and purposely tries to trick you on every question. Told us she never washes her hair.
Hands down the hardest class I had this semester. There was lengthy homework every night and there were longer weekly assignments that were given at random. The pop quizzes are difficult and while they are open notes you only have ten minutes to answer ten questions. I would recommend taking biology at a community college instead.
will give 0/10s on several homework assignments for only missing 1 part of the rubric, will not be any help at all if you dont understand and especially no help at all if you miss class for being sick. seems like a cool lady, has cool stories, but generally rude and stuck up
Fieke's class was an unnecessarily hard course for a 100 level course. Her lectures were fast, hard to follow, and her biggest recommendation was taking notes on the lecture slides before the class period. Answers to student questions were often given rudely and often not very helpful. Prepare for multiple pop quizzes and hard exams. Study a LOT.
Hardest class you will ever take. This class basically ruined my college career got an F in it freshman year and it put me on academic probation which led to academic suspension. Dont take this class take bio at a community college and save yourself the trouble. She seems to only have a professor job to do research and get paid. Bad teacher.
Not the best of people abuses students and their graduate students. They treat everyone like they are a child. Worst professor at ESF
She's passionate about biology, but sucks at teaching the material. She moves very fast in class and does not like when you ask questions in lecture. Expect an hour or more of homework every night.
She personally helped me find my way to a lab when my phone wasn't allowing me to use maps or make calls. I was scared I would get a C in the class but thanks to the doubling of the final score to replace your lowest test score, the surface level information asked on the final and the bonus points from the workshops; I was raised two letter grades.
Based on reviews, you might be scared to take graduate level courses with Fierke. But from my experience, graduate courses are where her teaching style thrives. She gets to know all of the students and their individual interests, talents, etc. Just be ready to do a lot of work in and out of class including reading, presenting, talking in class, etc
Super difficult class and very difficult to get answers from.
Was very disrespectful towards her students. It just felt passive aggressive the entire time and it was very difficult to get her to answer any questions we needed which made the class more difficult than it needed to be.
Listen. Dr.Feirki is crazy, but she is also smart. Her classes are difficult, especially as an incoming first year, but bio101 is essential for the rest of your career at ESF. Devote a lot of time to this class, pass it, and move on.
fierke is an awful professor who takes joy in seeing her class get bad grades. the exams were insanely specific for a class as broad as diversity of life and anything that was ever mentioned (no matter how brief) is fair game on the exams. not to mention the pop quizzes. she is condescending and sometimes just flat out rude towards students
While Dr. Fierke is most definitely a tough professor, she cares about what she's teaching and her classes are totally doable if you put in the work and study hard. Study study study! For diversity of life II, STUDY! For entomology, STUDY! Her study guides are very clear but there is a LOT of content to cover.
Fierke is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had here at ESF, she is condescending, rude, and passive-aggressive to her students. It seems like she gets off to watching her students struggle and fail. Even most of her TAs don't like her, this class is so poorly constructed compared to DIV 1. #BringWeirBack
Dr. Fierke is not it. She is rude, inflexible, and has an attitude. The class is called diversity of life however, she would rather focus on insignificant details on exams rather than the broad topics that should be covered. She is an incredibly tough grader, and her pop quizzes are sometimes impossible even with the lecture slides as reference.
Do you know every detail from bacteria to mammals? Can you recite the entire life cycle of bacteria to protists to sponges to insects to EVERY class of life standing between you and an A? You'll never have an A if you have any other classes! She doesn't care! Ready for the most dysfunctional class you'll ever take? Have fun messing up your gpa!
Incoming sophomores, Don't take this course! Talk to the dean and complain bc this is a truly horrific class! Your gpa will never be the same and our teacher will love seeing her students fail! Do whatever you can to avoid this It's a true nightmare of non learning disfunction. I've researched off gridding for this class and I hope I go missing!
Very unorganized class, All information either taught, skipped over, or even future material will be on tests. Big on Latin names for every eukaryote that exists ever. This is a weed out class and she enjoys making it almost impossible. Treats the class like children, not as actual students. Suck it, these tests made me seethe
Very dense lectures, often given by other professors with expertise in the topic. Exams and quizzes include specific details from each lecture. Posted study guides are helpful, but review material frequently because of how much information is hurled at you. She is very inflexible on deadlines and making up assignments.
