She is a very clear teacher. She tries to get students involved with eachother and the consepts in class. The powerpoint she uses is very helpful and she is very aprochable for questions. She often gave us back our exams for writen feedback then gave us points for it. I highly recommend her.
I dont know what the person below me is talking about. She doesnt even know how to teach the subject, our class has to correct her almost every class. There have been times where someone asked a question and she couldnt awnser it so she had to get back to us. Out the the 3 quizes we have taken the average for each quiz has been no higer than a 6 out
She is a very good professor.
This course is notoriously difficult, but Dr. Golden broke it down into manageable chunks. Her exams were fair and she let us use our homework notebooks for quizzes which was great (so long as you did the homework)! She cared that her students understood the material and was always approachable. She even held after hours exam study sessions.
Very good professor. The class is hard but it's the materal not the teacher. If u ask 4 help u will get it.
A humble individual with the spritit of joyfulness. Has strong command with the subject. Makes the subject intersting and approchable. Has a lot of work to do all the time. wish her a happy holiday.
Very emotional and is not consitent with quizes and exams.
She's nice & sweet, but sometimes she has trouble explaining things, and starts blushing and making up excuses for not knowing what she's being asked. She's new to state, that's probably why she's afraid to make mistakes and look dumb in front of her class But overall, she's a good teacher.. The class is tough, but she grades fairly..
She is very conscientious and wants her students to succeed. I'd never liked chem before taking her class.
She gives you notes to print out so it's easy to follow along in class. She simplifies everything and is very helpful during office hours.
She is dedicated to her students, although during lectures she confuses herself frequently. Lectures are fill in the blank notes; and the tests are all multiple choice. It is recommended to do all of the homework because it helps your grade a lot. She also holds practice exams outside of class which can be helpful.
during lecture, it is all note taking; she posts them on BB and you can print them out and fill in the blanks. Her tests are all multiple choice & a practice test will be before each test (not quiz) Make sure to do Mastering Chemistry because many of those questions are on the tests. She does cool demonstrations during class to keep your interest
SO CUTE! She has a texas accent and is so easy-going. Notes are pretty easy to understand and fill-in the blank. I opened my book once the entire semester. The practice tests are just like the tests. iClicker points on quizzes during class and attendance. pretty easy. loves doing demos. loves giving candy.
I like Doctor Golden, she's committed to teaching and very good at it. Uses analogies to clarify difficult to understand concepts. Very bright, and fair. Always optimistic, even when she is sick.
This is a hard class. Don't expect to get an easy A. That being said, this teacher is amazing at helping you. She gives you chances to earn extra credit, office hours are extremely helpful, and makes the class more personal and fun so that you can enjoy it more and absorb more information. I suggest you read the read the textbook. It helps. A LOT.
She is a nice being; however, there have been issues. She did not offer any help. My history professor stated "don't ever let an instructor let you think that "you should already know." Its their job to TEACH. Her lectures are pointless, and she doesn't sound very clear. Great individual, not so great of an instructor.
Dr. Golden was a very tough professor but she did teach her stuff well. This is a tough subject to teach. I had struggled the entire time in this class. The homework and book were my study tools. I am not the greatest at chemistry and nothing could help clarify the subject. So be prepared for this class.
Golden is a sweetheart but her class is extremely hard! You will put in about 25-30 hrs a week studying & doing mastering chem. Dr. Frank sets up the Chem 1B format..WHICH SUCKS! The labs are so hard! Golden's lecture exams were very hard also! So many students were fighting to get a C in the class..Be prepared for a hard semester with this class!
golden is amazing she makes lecture pretty easy and fun she gives you power points to follow along in class and her tests are pretty fair. but you must read the book if you don't the class will probably be harder. and idk why people are saying she isnt helpful i go to her office hours and she makes everything crystal clear!
Dr. Golden is not that hard of a teacher, but the subject matter is. She gives you a lot opportunities for extra credit. Take advantage of them, cause it will come in handy. Don't cheat cause she will catch you and wait until the final to fail you.
Dr. Golden is a great professor and is very funny. She tries to make her lecture fun sometimes. This class is hard but it's like every other class, you have to put in time, commitment & effort to pass. Lab is lots of work! Good luck & have fun!
DO NOT use Blackboard to cheat on her quizzes and tests. You will get screwed over.
Dr. Golden's tests are hard, but guess what, it's chemistry! She's really nice and I thought she did a good job explaining complicated material. I'm not a chemistry expert at all and still managed to get a "B." Class in only mandatory if you want some points for her I-Clicker questions. She gives out some extra credit so take advantage of that.
golden is a very nice teacher she give you skeleton notes which help alot i recommend you use all your resources like your textbook and tutoring. make sure to study your material and you'll do fine she even offers SI which is very helpful. watch all her videos and recommend going to class even though its not mandatory. Her exam are multiple choice
Dr. golden is quite confusing sometimes. yes she may know her stuff but it can be hard for her to translate it. when students ask questions, she doesn't really answer it straight but somehow manages to answer everything except the question. For some reason this semester she missed the class like 4 or 5 times, which for chem is NOT a great thing.
Horrible Avoid at all cost's! You will end up teaching yourself. She is pretty much about the theory and not about the problem. She teaches 2+2=4, but then asks the problem in a confusing and difficult manner. There is a major disconnect between the lecture classes and the lab work as well. No regulation over the lab TA's.
Her class was very good. She posts video lectures online for you. For classes with her, she would just give everyone worksheets and we would just use the class time to solve them with classmates. This method was very good for me and prepared me very well for exams I hate boring lectures where I would just fall asleep but this class is not like that
Absolutely the worst chem teacher on campus. Chem 1B has been restructured by her in some stupid program so not only she does not need to teach she can publish her research as well. You will spend all of your time doing mastering chemistry, listening to the lecture on your free time, class is quiz time with iclicker. No teching at all!!!!!!!!!!!
She provided her lecture videos online and also certain chapters in text to go along with the videos. Reading the Book/watching videos is super important in understanding whats happening in class, and passing the tests. Test are based off the Textbook and it is extremely helpful reading the chapters and doing the HW. Hard Work but Doable!
Dr. Golden is probably one of the nicest professors out there. In Chem1A, she offered tons of extra credit. In class, we would solve problems on the POGIL book, and that was very helpful. She also gives practice tests for you to take, that are pretty similar to the actual tests. There was extra credit on every single homework assignment.
Does a good job of getting the material to the students, and practice with it. Super helpful if you want to learn. Office hours were great help as well. Ask questions and participate in lecture. I read the book, and used the online videos for when the book was confusing, but her tests are fair!
She skips class a lot, which made learning the material hard. She would overshared information from her personal life instead of using class time to work problems. She's very unreliable, I recommend taking a different professor.
She definitely knows chemistry, but shes not great at explaining it to those who have no clue about it. So if youre a slower learner or it takes you a little longer to understand things, then I dont recommend her. But if youre a quick learner and like chemistry, then shell be great for you!
Dr. Golden is a great teacher. She takes the time to make sure that you understand material. The Quizes in lab are pretty rough so prepare!
Professor Garrett is a great lab professor for Chem1AL. She has very clear grading criteria, is lenient when it comes to mistakes early on, and is helpful and available outside of class. I would 10/10 recommend this professor and am taking her again next semester for Chem1B!
Context: College 1st year. Took APChem(got a 4) 2nd year Highschool. This class was quite easy for me, since most of the labs were similar to labs I performed in high school. Concepts were simplified compared to HS as well. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW SIG FIGS. She is a fair grader, but only deducts points by 5s. Often left class early if lab was finished.
Dr. Garrett is a relatively laid back professor and is amazing at lecturing. However, she isn't the most consistent at grading and takes a long time to provide feedback. The tests in lab are related to the material, but are relatively difficult with very low scoring across the class. Nevertheless she is easy to talk to and very helpful.
Dr. Garrett ""lecture" time is used for practice problems and discussions on difficult questions while it is expected for you to introduce the material at home by reading the book or watching provided videos. This is extremely helpful if you already have background in the classes topics. There is a lot of online homework due every week.
Dr. Garrett expects you to watch the videos provided and do homework (assigned each week). Class time is used for discussing problems and working with groups. The course material was not that difficult but you have to put in effort. If you would rather prefer a "traditional lecture", don't take her.
Professor Garret was kind and offered help when needed. However she was impossible to reach, and she had a lot of personal problems that seemed to interfere with her ability to grade work. Online teaching can be hard especially since we are all new to it, but the amount of work that went ungraded was ridiculous. Easy class tho.
Garrett was great online! I got an A in the class. There were quizzes during each lecture so attendance was basically mandatory. The tests were pretty much exactly like the homework. No lockdown browser and plenty of time. She is kind and really cares about her students. Would take again.
She is HORRIBLE. She does not teach at all-you dont even have to go to class cause all she goes over is only quizzes and in classes, she doesnt even go over the tests. She is a bad communicator and if you have a question about your grade good luck. She sucks save your time and money with this person. Also extremely passive aggressive.
It's really hard to get into contact with Professor Garrett outside of class. I've emailed her to change an incorrect exam grade and no response at all. There is A LOT of homework so be prepared to spend at least 5 hours a week on it. This class was very fast paced and there is a new chapter every week. Barely lectures & you have to teach yourself
You learn everything by yourself and in class you do in-class activities. There is A LOT of homework and reading to do. Her grading system is what saved me. She went fair with grading exams this semester so I was able to maintain my A. The class itself is very hard, as all STEM classes are. She takes forever to respond. Lots of material to cover
Professor Garret is by far the best Ive had so far. Although Chem is hard no matter who teaches it, she makes lessons memorable and offers a ton of points to offset the exams which can be difficult. She also uses real-world experimental examples to help retention, which works. In class activities use test questions. If you try, youll do well!
Garret is a great professor she makes sure we all know she is always open to answer questions during, after, and outside class. She always explained how the material actually applied outside the class. There are only 3 exams and the final, do the dynamic study modules they help you study for exam and count for half of your exam grade.
Dr. Garrett really cares about giving credits for your efforts. She is caring and encouraging and always approachable. You can easily pass with her if you did the work. For an A or B in the class you would need to work more, reading the book would help and practicing is important.
This is a very quick paced class, you go through more than one chapter in a week so there is tons of hw that are worth 300+ points. Shes hard to reach out to and doesnt lecture much. Its really a you teach yourself kind of class.
Dr. Garrett is kind and easy to access through the Canvas inbox. You do all the homework outside of class, including the reading and the quizzes. Lectures are for in class activities, which is why you need to attend the class if you want to get 100% on them. You don't really have much time in class to ask questions about the homework.
Do not take Professor Garrett unless you plan on having to teach yourself the entire coursework on your own. Garrett makes this class unnecessarily time consuming as all of the work is done outside of class, showing up does not help your grade. This class is only ideal if you prefer a self study type class environment, which I did not want.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!
She expects you to read and know the material coming into class. That’s the only way you’ll know what’s going on. A lot of reading is involved and you mostly teach yourself. For the test I asked if there were study guides and she said this is college so it’s my problem. The paper she provides for the test never help.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE!! Way too much homework was doing homework all day and all night and still failed!!
Would not recommend this professor. Didn't include any lectures in her class. Attending doesn't help, she doesn't teach anything. Need to come prepared, if you don't read the chapters you will be lost (which consisted of A LOT of reading). Mostly a self-taught class.
Not as bad as the other people are saying just do the homework, study with other resources, do practice problems on your own and you should be good. Only complaint I have is that lecture is not really lecture you have to watch the videos she posts the day before. The lecture time is basically a glorified worksheet day.
Dr. Garrett clearly knows her material but does not teach. Claims to have a flipped classroom model, but she doesn't ever lecture so this is not true. Average exam scores are around 25-30% and she doesn't try to go over the parts people were struggling with. Assigned a random group assignment the last week of class worth 10% of the grade.
She doesn't lecture in class, just iclicker questions for in-class activity. You have to teach yourself and with your study group but mine was never there 90% of the time. I did all the homework and did well but didn't help my grade. Test averages were around 30-50%, tank your grade. DO STUDY MODULES FOR POINTS(doesnt help on tests but use quizlet)
A ton of homework, reading, and everything goes by fast. You sit in class just for the last 15 minutes to do an I-clicker. You are basically teaching yourself, so good luck. She answers your questions if you have time. Sometimes when she can't make it to class, she notifies you right before class is about to begin.
She's a queen. Be open with her and if you're struggling talk to her early, she will help you! Most of the work is based off how much you study and how much time you put into the class. Attendance isn't mandatory but i suggest showing up. iClicker is most of your grade, DSM for extra test points. SHE WILL HELP IF YOU SPEAK UP!!
Although I have heard mixed opinions, I loved Dr. Garrett. She was always super relatable and caring. She has a tendency to over share but I love her for that as I feel like we become closer. Her classes are designed to allow you to practice and work problems out. Overall this class was easy and you get back what you put in.
Does not give very clear instructions, so class time feels like a waste of time often. Be sure to watch the lecture videos BEFORE you go to class, otherwise you will be 100% lost. Be ready to dedicate tons of time to homework, and be on top of it, otherwise your grade will plummet. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
Dr. Garrett does not explain or teach in the class. her tests are irrelevant to what the textbook says or the homework assigned. the assigned homework is quite heavy with no usefulness throughout the class.
Homework was SO excessive that I felt like it was counterintuitive to my learning. I was spending more time worrying about getting homework done than actually studying or focusing on the lecutres. I also didn't find it useful or relevant. Plus she doesn't teach, you have to watch pre-recorded videos. Basicallly if you're lost you're on your own.
Be prepared to teach yourself the subject. Class averages around 35% on tests which makes it challenging just to pass the course.
Dr. Garrett is not very helpful, which isn't good in high-intensity courses at all. In lectures, students are given 30 mins to do the in-class activity problems themselves, and 20 mins for her to quickly explain them. She often rushed through them and did not allow students any time to ask questions. She was rarely accessible outside of class also.
idek where to start. be prepared to self teach yourself EVERYTHING. class avg for exams are about 40%, test are very hard. I suggest getting perfect scores on hw and do the iclicker. please please go to tutoring and look up vids on youtube!!! this is prob the only way to pass the class cause the test brings you down very much
Wouldn't recommend, if you can't find another prof then take this class over the summer. Doesn't lecture in class, you're kind of meant to teach yourself the material. Wasn't helpful in class during group work and was lowkey passive aggressive when answering questions but the extra credit helps your grade a lot!!
This is basically a teach yourself type of class because her "lecture" in class was everyone working in groups on assignments based on material that she wouldn't teach or lecture about to begin with, so no one really knew how to do them. Then for the last part of lecture she would rush through the answers and very briefly go over how to do them.
In her lectures, all you do is an in class assignment, so there is never any actual lecturing or teaching at all. There is alot of homework that she does not teach about. Only good thing I would say is the homework was worth lot a points; thats the only way I passed the class though I failed every single test. I learned more in lab than lecture.
She does not lecture but has an in-class homework/quiz to be taken three times: once by yourself, once with a group, and then with her afterwards. It was only 50 minutes long and we often did not have enough time for her to explain how to solve them. Her only solution was to stay longer, but many people couldn't due to having a class right after.
Tell me why this girl was in an elementary preparation science course, where we do Labs and experiments based on things we would do in our future classes. She had us whiping out crazy tools that were so unrealistic to even use in an elementary school setting. Be prepared if you ask her a question, SHE will make it HARDER than it needs to be.
In the most respectful way, when people say 'college is a scam' it's because of professors like this. Paying tuition just to have to teach yourself the entire class materials is exactly as unfun as it sounds. Take your chances, and don't take Garretts class. Coming from someone who hasn't even finished the class yet and already hates it here.
Assigns so much homework literally every day, mostly consisting of note-taking and watching lecture videos on your own. In lecture, she won't really teach anything; instead, you and your group will have to complete in-class activities on your own.
Horrible. She does NOTHING to actually teach during the class. She throws a packet for you to do during class, and when you ask questions about it, she's very condescending. She does go over the answers, but her explanations are very short and not thorough. This is the only class I did not get an A in, which says a lot! Would never recommend her.
Lecture is useless unless you want the summary sheet packets she gives out, everything is self-learning. Nice person but horrible at teaching. Your grade relies heavily on the exams.
The first couple units she didn't teach anything, just handed us packets and then reviewed the answers. As the semester has gone on she's gotten a LITTLE better. You have to do a lot of studying on your own, mostly everyone I know who was taking her lecture was failing or significantly struggling and I knew a lot of people in that class.
DO NOT I repeat do not take this professor if want to fail. You have to teach yourself all the material and you have homework every two days, which isn't bad but you don't get enough time to process one section when she wants you to learn 3 new ones the next day . Honestly, the worst professor I've gotten.
Doesn't teach anything
Chem 1a had no reason to be this hard the material really wasn't. Any advice? STUDY they were not lying when they said for every hour you spend in class study 3 hrs out. Purely studying not even hw. Also half the class dropped out by the end of the semester. Go to office hrs, make sure you get your lab skills done asap
Honestly, everyone complaining about the amount of "work" will have a rude awakening later on in their classes. She does teach material but the big concepts have to be learned outside of class.. be realistic you cant cover that material in a 50 min lecture. If you didn't pass its on you.. she gives you the opportunity to take all exams twice.
The lecture is testing what you learned from the notes and the hw is testing what you learned from lectures. Do all the work and study properly and its an easy B. Take this class if you wanna pass and feel like you earned it
It's like taking an online class in class. She just gives you packets to do with your group or by yourself. She gives you so much homework that does not help me at all. The last 15 minutes of class she goes through the answers and tries to explain but can't . The last 5 minutes she just tells you the answer without explanation. Lab is 20% of grade
Handwritten notes three per week. No lecture only online hw and prep for exams. 5 group exams and 5 individual exams plus cumulative final. Will not teach during lectures. Only assigns packets and rushes at the end trying to explain answers. Bad structure of the course. You are paying to literally teach yourself the content.
