I took her for world history, it started out pretty hard... but then she realized it wasn't working and the tests just got really easy. The only downside is you have to do alot of reading, in books other than your text book.
She is awful! I would not take her! She has no empathy for students what so ever and sometimes has no idea what she is even talking about. She is not clear about what she expects and the information given is information overload that its hard to study for the tests! If you aren't a history person, it makes it even worse! Very frustrating...
I hated history and I hated this class. Professor Gayan is somewhat helpful if you talk to her and she will work with you on things. HOWEVER, she is NOT a MORNING person so if you do take her, please make sure it's after lunch!
Her class was very easy. There was almost no homework and no book readings. She gives out a lot of extra credit if you attend class. Everything you need to know is on the PowerPoints in class.
No, No, NO. I have never loved history and I still don't. Her test her hard- she realized they were too hard and changed them up and gave extra credit. I like her as a person, not a teacher. Oh and if it's a morning class, don't take her.
Her test are extremely difficult. She was not interested in the material at all. She thought she was the funniest person in the world and would get upset if the class did't laugh at her jokes. She gives a lot of extra credit papers that you have to do if you want to pass her class. Attendance is mandatory but she only takes it about once a week.
She is awful! It was almost impossible to study for her tests. She puts up power points and out lines online but nothing useful is ever on there. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Her lectures are nearly pointless. All the test material comes from the book. Lots of reading. The only reason you would want to come to class is that sometimes she gives EC just for attending class.
Terrible teacher. Lectures pointless. Stay away if possible.
She is the worst teacher ever, the lectures are pointless and so is the book, her tests are BS, the one I studied the most for I made a 42, use the online outlines, and she will not work with ya, I made a 69.5 in the class and she woudn'e round up, it almost cost me HOPE, I had all A's and B's except in this class, avoid teacher at all costs!!!!
I can see that this looks like a bad teacher from all of these comments, but this teacher is great! She knows exactly what she is talking about and is interested in the subject. She has powerpoints that help alot but if you wnt an A onthe test, read the book, its not hard at all, just don't be lazy and take advantage of extra credit!
She is a wonderful teacher.
Great teacher, if you listen in class and read the book you'll do fine.
Don't take her online. She was unavailable for most of the class. She didn't get back to me within a decent time via email. I took her because everyone said how great she was in class; she's not online.
To be clear. I am not a disgruntled student or someone who didn't go to class. I went to class, read, listened to lectures. By far one of the most disappointing profs i have ever had. Not clear in lectures, watched videos that were supposed to "teach us." and attendance was mandatory. Very lazy as well. I would not take, please take someone else
LAZIEST PROFS EVER!! WORST PROFS EVER!! She does not teach anything. She comes into class unprepared and will just talk about history and most of the time forgets what she is talking about. You have to EVERYTHING on your own by reading the book. DON'T TAKE THIS PROFS SHE IS AWFUL
very lazy, does not explain anything just expects the book to teach you. Not a good class if you don't plan on spending all of your time studying history.
Professor Gayan is a good instructor and she has her hands full with Many other F2F classes and OL classes so you can expect some delays in communication. Her test are kinda hard since she asks for interpretations of events and not what happen on this date or the other. The assignments are pretty easy just read and analyze. I suggest the OL clas
You must go to every class because she randomly takes attendance by iClicker questions. You must read the textbook each week in order to do well on the weekly chapter quizzes; the first few quizzes she gives multiple attempts but all have time limits. The quizzes accurately represent the test,so write down all the questions and answer to study.
Her class was easy. you went to class and listened. You can not have your cell phone out at all! Very little homework all turned in on folio.
I took the online class, and she tried teaching two classes into one. She ended up getting herself and all the students confused. She didn't put in any grades the whole time, so your final grade was sort of a surprise. She rarely replies to emails. Her test are are four hours long and have to be split into two parts because they are so difficult.
Gayan had absolutely no clue. Didn't update grades, assigned ridiculous assignments that ended up having nothing to do with the material. Most of the homework doesnt help with studying. The only lucky part was that she messed up grading so bad that she gave everyone extra points, and the last couple assignments she gave us. She struggles in life.
She is a good teacher. Gives help when you ask and does seem to care if we pass or fail. She is big on paying attention in class. No sleeping or texting but thats normal. She doesn't give much homework and it isn't hard to do. If you read the chapters and did the homework its an easy A or B.
I had Gayan for both World History and my FYE class freshman year. She is VERY clear on what she wants and as long as you do what she asks you will get an A. She makes class interesting and is always there to help and meet with you if you need it. Take her as much as you can she is way more clear than most history professors!!
Ms. Gayan is a great person, but a horrible professor. She's more concerned with making her students laugh at her corny jokes than teaching them. She relies on videos to teach her material, you'll get so tired of John Green and Crash Course. If you don't read, you won't pass because she doesn't teach well.
She is not a very good teacher. The tests don't go with the criteria and she does not help students with their work. I would never take this class again.
Gayan is a little terrifying, but if you put in the effort she notices and will reward you for it. She may be strict, but she is a good teacher.
As an international student, I do care about the professor a lot. Prof Gayan always there to help her students and to offer as many chances as she has to make the understand and feel comfortable. I like her, highly recommended and would take her again.
I failed every test, but did all of the launchpad homework and extra credit so I'm going to get a high C. The only way to pass her tests is to read the book. I studied the notes and it didn't help me at all. If you don't mind a lot of reading, then take her. Overall she's a good person and tries to help with extra credit.
Gayan really cares about her students, she will definitely work with you if she sees you putting in effort. She is extremely flexible about meeting with students and she wants everyone to learn the material. Her lectures weren't relevant to the tests though, so if you take her make sure you read the textbook because that's what the test is over.
Gayan is a little intimidating but she cares. Going to class is a joke though because her lectures never matched up to the material on the tests. Do all the extra credit she assigns and you might come out with a decent grade.
If she sees that you participate and do the readings, she'll help you out with whatever you need. I was high during the first test and screwed around the beginning of first semester and my grade was so low it was mathematically impossible for me to pass. But I always sat in the front row and participated a lot and somehow I finished with a B.
I love Ms. G! If you're not willing to study and read and put effort into the class, you'll still pass but not with a great grade. If you want an A, it's obtainable. Loved this professor so much I signed up for her again next semester.
I've gotta say this is the most unorganized teacher I've had in college. Her exams do not reflect notes or Launchpad. Don't miss deadlines because if you miss something, she's not very lenient at all. She takes attendance everyday and gives you pretty pitiful "extra credit" for it at the end of the semester. Office hours are pretty open.
Overall the class was okay. She gives extra credit for attendance. Her test do not match her lectures. She is very unorganized and her lectures are very boring. However, Gayan is a very sweet lady. She is very willing to help her students and shows much concern about her students learning.
Extremely funny, but rambles a good bit! When calculating grades she messed mine up, but when I asked about it she quickly fixed the problem. She is very caring but does not take bull. Test were ridiculously hard!! If you do well on the writing assignments and launchpad you'll make a decent grade. I failed every test and still made a B.
Attendance isn't mandatory but being in class for her lectures will help you with the overall understanding. She wont really teach you much but its okay because all of her test questions come from general understanding and the launchpad flash cards. If you put in a little effort you'll probably get a B or A!
She honestly is a great teacher. She offers TONS of extra credit lectures and assignments. Go to her office hours if you don't do well on her tests. Do the launchpad work and go to class. She will help you if you show up, if you don't she will hold it against you. Don't buy the book. Just use the digital one from online. Very amusing and very kind!
Not a great history teacher. Uses Launchpad for HW/book, which is really a pain to work with (the interface is really slow/finicky). Her tests are easy, but grades harshly on essay questions. On the final, she must not have graded the essay questions since I got no points for those... She gives tests weeks late & forgets to assign some HW. Avoid!
She gives lots of extra credit. Shes very nice and is very available outside of class. I would definately take her again. Im not a history major but I enjoyed her class and it was fairly easy.
first of all, she is amazing!!! She tells you at the beginning of the semester, you can only get the grade that you work for. Boy, does she hold you to that. She offers multiple extra credit opportunities and plenty of grades made up of homeW online. I say she's amazing because I did such a mediocre job and I still managed a B, she is a saint !!!
Her lectures were sometimes hard to follow but if you take good notes and do the readings before class it shoud all make sense. She gives a ton of extra credit and if you do it all it should raise you an entire letter grade. Takes attendance every day.
Professor Gayan makes her class a lot harder than it should be with her negative attitude. She does not like to answer questions, she assumes that you should already know all the information. She is good about giving extra credit but never has a pleasant attitude. If you have the option to take someone better I definitely would.
LOVE HER! Prof. Gayan cares about her students and will learn your names even in a bigger class. Weekly online homework for each chapter but it's easy if you read the book. Looks over your tests with you during office hours which was super helpful and gives alot of extracredit! Her lectures are interesting but go to class to get the notes!!
Honestly dont know why Gayan's rating is so low. Other than her ridiculous tests, the class isnt bad. Mild amount of hw, some extra credit, and shes not excruciatingly boring.
Cared a lot about her students. If you went to class you ended up with at least a B. Provided study guides and weekly work was very easy and a large portion of over all grade.
I honestly don't understand why she is rated so low. I made 60s-70s on all the tests and a low B on the final and still came out with an A because she gave so much extra credit.
When I first took Ms. Gayan for world history 2 I was certain that I was going to drop her. When you first meet her she seems very brash, but that isn't the case at all. As a teacher, she seems tough, in reality she is kind, caring, and truly loves her students. I have taken her twice, and will continue to take her in the future.
Great professor, definitely knows the material well.
Cant understand anything from her class harsh grader
Literally the WORST class/teacher I have ever taken in my entire life. Super unorganized, and her tests and quizzes are IMPOSSIBLE to do well on unless you have hours to just sit and read like 50 pages a day. This class was more of an English class than a history class, because all of the quizzes and tests were most reading comprehension questions.
This was by far one of the hardest classes I've ever had to take. She was not even close to being prepared for anything, she was so unorganized, and the entire class was based on quizzes based off of the textbook. Even though it was open book, the questions were so specific it was impossible to find answers ANYWHERE. Definitely NOT an easy class.
Very difficult for those who aren't good with lectures. She will make you read a couple of documents a night. Her homework consists of reading and be able to talk about ti in class. All homework given is given on the test. If you do no read the documents, you will fail. She takes attendance everyday and that goes towards your final grade.
Professor Gayan has been one of my favorite professors this semester. A lot of people say that her class is difficult, but that's because they don't do the readings or annotations. She is always willing to listen and help her students, and is more than willing to go into further detail to explain things.
Don't listen to the bad reviews. She is so cool and makes class interesting. There are readings, but if you annotate them, its a easy 100. Go to class because it factors in your grade. 4 tests. They are challenging. but STUDY. She also gives SOOO much extra credit. I failed all my tests and made a B on the final, and I got an A, bc of extra credit.
At first, she comes of as a mean teacher, but you soon realize that it is just her personality. She is so funny and GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. Establish a relationship with her so she can help you as much as possible with your grade. LOTS of extra credit. Her tests are difficult, but not impossible. Show up to class, it is for a grade. Good luck!
Professor Gayan is a very good professor who puts up with a lot from her students. If you give her a chance and pay attention, you'll do well. Make sure you actually do your homework because it's not very hard and it IS very important for the class. The tests are very easy if you've done everything you're supposed to do beforehand.
I had her following the Corona outbreak and she gave no tests after it. I had an 87.5 test average in the class going into Spring break however the assignments she gave during the pandemic counted for so few points I could never bring my grade up (no more tests were given either).
She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. There are lots of annotations but they are not difficult and as long as you do the reading, annotations, and pay attention during class you should have no problem passing. She also encourages participation during class and dislikes when students are late.
Want's you to do all the work for the class, and will blame you for not attending if you don't understand the material. I have attended every class and missed no assignments, but she still blames the students for her poor teaching.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, at least with this professor. She is extremely rude to her students and blames her poor teaching style on them when they fail. Her lectures are mostly her playing videos that you can watch on your own time, yet she will hold it against you if you miss even one class. I could go on for hours. Do not take Gayan for anything.
Professor Gayan is very stern. This class is somewhat harder than it needs to be. There is a lot of required reading. Expect a reading assignment about 4 days per week, due every other day most of the time. I recommend taking detailed notes and pay attention. Do not miss the readings because they are graded and essential for academic success.
Online class due to COVID-19. She was not prepared to teach online. Need to attend her online lectures to know what's going on on top of the Perusall assignments. On the plus side, she does offer a lot of extra credit throughout the semester. She does really care about the coursework, however, I would not take this professor again.
At first she can come off as a bit rude and insensitive, but shes not that bad once you get to know her . If she notice that youre putting forth effort and care about your grades, she will do whatever she can to help.
prof gayan obviously loves history. this class was no joke but i didnt hate it. she makes her own questions for exams and they are very hard. attend lectures and thoroughly read the primary sources and you will do fine.
Assigned many reading assignments on Perusall and required paragraph sized annotations on each assignment. In lectures she would either play YouTube videos or talk about material that sometimes wasn't on the exam. Exams were very tough and her reviews were completely useless. She once even said it was our fault if we weren't doing good in her class
Everyone makes her out to be strict, boring & unprepared but I absolutely loved this professor. She obviously loves teaching history, all you have to do is stay focused and on top of assignments. The readings and annotations aren't bad like everyone makes them out to be and neither is her teaching. If you're doing bad in her class it's not her fault
Her online content was ridiculously bad. Throughout the semester students were constantly having to contact her to correct her quizzes and tests including her mid term and final that contained egregious errors. She expects a lot from her students but she does not reciprocate this effort as a professor. Be prepared for a lot of homework and quizzes
She assigns way too much homework on Perusall. It isn't even helpful, its just annotations and they have a 3 sentence minimum, like how are you going to make rules for annotations?? We can't even get access codes for the website because they're out. I understand she has to make a living and Persuall is probably paying her but its just so bad.
On top of having to pay so much money just to teach yourself, the grades are never right or she just types in random crap (or her SI). She never seems to know what's going on and wants to talk about politics or how fast Mr. Green talks in his video. Take this class if you 100% want to know nothing. I could've learned better with a bear teaching.
Having professor Gayan was the best part of my freshman year. She truly cares about her students and making sure they succeed. Make sure you make it to class on time or she will embarrass you if you come in late. I love how much she cares about what she teaches and how much she knows about the course.
So the work? Fine, the normal stuff. The annotations aren't hard. She's just very commanding. Don't get me wrong, I learned and did well on tests, but somedays you can't wait to get out. Either because she's berating the class for being afraid to speak up, being downright confusing with things, or telling you to shut up for the smallest whisper
Hated her
I received an A+ in Mrs. Gayan's course; however, they're a lot of busy work. Every week you're expected to read and annotate articles online. Some of these articles were challenging and time consuming. She curves her tests so I received over a 100 multiple times. Lastly, I found the lectures to be quite unenjoyable.
Shes not bad, but is annoying
- No phone or laptop allowed to use during class - A lot of perusal work to do - class is not mandatory but she does count it as a grade at the end of the semester - comes off as rude and mean - very disorganized, like a lot, her tests and quizzes are always messed up somehow
The class itself is not hard, but she assigns SO much busywork. Half the stuff she assigns is not on the test, and the study guides for each test she provides do not really reflect it. She has way too much homework for her class and is very unorganized in giving the work to you.
I took her class, and she constantly posted about how she will not be responding to emails about grades. She was never helpful over email, she always said that what you did never met the criteria when you asked about a low grade. Overall, a very out-of-touch and unorganized professor.
wouldn't take again, but she was a good speaker. She went out of order a bit which I struggled with.
RUNNN! Don't take her class if u do drop the class and pick another Proffesor she's not clear with any of the work her grading system is delusional, won't give u help if you reach out trust me I tried ended up getting a D in this class because of her unclear instructions.
Gayan can be very tough but if you make the effort with her she'll make the effort with you. She doesn't post ANY notes and will NOT send them if you miss class either. She gives extra credit a ton so it's really not hard to pass her class as long as you do the work.
Professor Gayan is a good professor. I had her for an 8 am and you could tell she didn't want to have a class so early, but she made it bearable. She's very sarcastic, but you can tell she cares. She technically doesn't have a mandatory attendance, but if you miss so many days she will take off points. She does google a lot of her stuff though.
Professor Gayan was a great history professor. She wants you to succeed, but you have to want it. Doing your homework on time, taking semi-detailed notes, and minimal studying for tests will lead you to a good grade in this course.
I really loved her as a professor and a person. She made World History 2 interesting and enjoyable. If you do the perusalls and come to class ready to listen, you'll do great! Don't be scared to go up to her after class if you need any sort of help with the content.
I really liked this professor but didn't love the class. I though she was very funny and made it easy to listen and engage, but the class itself contains a lot of homework and busywork that is not on the tests. If you are bad at attending class you will not do well. Attend class, take notes, & do your online reading and writing homework on time.
Her class is basic history most of it was information I already knew. As long as you do the homework and study you'll be fine. I get why she has the rating she has though. She doesn't ever respond to emails if you want a response email her TA. But overall I would retake this class.
She is nice but if you aren't good at world history don't take this class. Class is mandatory she takes attendance everyday. A lot of perusall articles!!
I'm certain that those who gave her a low rating are the ones who put in very little effort. You literally just need the study guide she provides at the beginning of each lesson to pass her examinations. You'll be good to go if you just take the time to fill those out and review them. Easiest class I had this semester.
Overall, the class is not as hard. As long as you study, do the work on time, and at least show up to class you should pass. She's reasonable when it comes to some assignments, every once and a while she'll give extra points if you did the assignments on time. Even though her response to emails aren't prompt, she has a TA that will answer.
The class is very easy as long as you're not lazy. The Perusall readings are annoying, but they're not super long. Just show up to class and go through her study guides, and you'll get a pretty good grade.
The class is easy and fun! As long as you do your work and just want to pass. Tests not that hard and if you study you will pass. Attendance matters and she give bonus points for it. she uses Perusall readings, and they help you with the class! Just show up to class and go through her study guides, and you'll get a pretty good grade.
Lots of Perusall readings that are soo annoying, tests have super simple questions as long as you know the materials, lectures are very boring and half the information that's on the test isn't on the power points so you'll need to be writing down extra information.
She has a lot of work due every week so I wouldn't recommend if you have other work heavy classes. Pretty nice as far as interacting goes so as long as you don't piss her off she'll stay that way. She doesn't post what she talks about in class but she does test on it. Exams aren't awful but they definitely aren't easy.
She is not as bad as people on here make her out to be at all. As long as you don't get on her bad side and are a good student then she's chill. The class is VERY reading heavy so do not take if you already have a big workload. Readings can be tedious but not horrible. 4 total test which are all very easy as long as you pay attention in class.
This professor was very challenging in a lot of ways. She seemed grumpy the majority of the time, reacting in condescending or rude ways. She would single out students for insignificant things in a class of about 250 people, like going to the bathroom and coming back or wearing headphones. I lost a lot of sleep doing the Perusall homework.
Taking this class was something I wouldn't personally recommend. Get ready to have to do 3-5 Persuall readings a week while also trying to figure out what she's even talking about. She's very unapproachable and made her TA do everything. Would straight up tell us to never email her if we needed anything and would get mad if we did.
she okay, she will call you out in class not in a good way, hw is alot, she dosnt give you the powerpoint or any notes she put out in class, review was nothing like test. homework is heavy graded in class so if poor test taker you pass with a B. Get mad and take out on you in class
She would get very offended if you weren't giving her your undivided attention, and she will call you out in the middle of class. She would not let people in my class use their computers or ipads to take notes. She would move on to the next slides quickly not allowing you to get all the notes. She would not post the notes or let you take pictures.
There are a lot of readings that you have to do. Get ready for about 3-5 every week. Good luck finding the notes that are talked about in class. She never posts them online and expects you to copy them down super fast. She also gets upset if no one wants to answer the questions that she's asking. Participation matters.
She is very reading-heavy. She used Perusall, and you have about 2 readings due in a week, but they are very short. My only complaint is that she doesn't put the notes slides on Folio,so if you miss class, you need to ask someone for notes. She also used iClicker for attendance.
The lecture notes were never posted so if you missed a day, you're cooked. tests are 50 questions and you have to buy scantrons. uses iClicker for participation and attendance. I would rate a -10/10 if I could. SHE DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS. and expect 2-3 perusall assignments a week. acts like she's incapiated at times iykyk.
She doesn't allow talking or using any electronics during class. It isn't too bad if you just pay attention in the lectures.
Easy history class. Online assignments throughout semester, 3 tests in total. She is easy to reach and grades fair. Rare group/partner work. Class is easy to understand and fun to go to.
Melissa Gayan was an awful professor. She is very rude to students during class and don't you dare go to the bathroom during this class. Be prepared for profanity, and she loves to call students out. Her poor TA acted like she was scared to even be around her. Her tests are nothing like the study guides, so I will voice-record her.
She is very indirect with her grading system then assignments a lot of confusing assignments.
Will call you out for being on electronics. Uses iClicker for a grade. Will snap at students that ask questions, making learning difficult. Perusall annotation assignments twice a week, some days having up to three assignments. The articles we have to annotate make no sense. I genuinely skipped half the course because it was so unenjoyable. -10/10.
She is not the nicest professor but if you just pay attention and take notes you'll be fine. She doesn't post lecture notes or anything so you have to attend. She doesn't allow you to be on your phone and will call you out if you are. The class isn't hard honestly, just try to get on her good side.
