I took ENV 101 during the summer - you cannot miss a class! She was so funny and clearly cares so much about the environment. Highly recommend!
Melissa was very passionate about the material and gve good examples. Questions on the test came directly from the slides and you don't need to buy the book. Sometimes there was a lot of writing , but well worth it because the material stuck. Curved grades on test by dropping questions we all failed and HW never too more than 20 mins. Easy science
She's awesome! She pretty much lectures the entire class but it's VERY interesting and fun. There are 3 exams and one cumulative final but she goes over the tests afterwards & adjusts the grades if needed. No attendance taken but gives pop quizzes sporadically and gives you credit for taking it. She gives back all the tests/quizzes to study.
Professor Giovanni is a real gem at CSN. She is extremely passionate about climate change and the environment and loves what she teaches. Her lectures are extremely interesting and as long as you come to class, take notes, and study then you will pass. She tells you exactly what will be on a test and even drops your lowest test score. GREAT TEACHER
Lovely professor who will take the time to answer your questions and concerns, especially if you're actually eager to get good grades and do the work. The class isn't difficult and you need to buy a interactive book that she will check at the end of class and you also get a few problems to do at home on pearson's mastering. Liked this class a lot!
MKG is settling into CSN from UNLV as one of the best professors at CSN. She is really passionate about the environment and inspired most of us to have the same compassion. Plan to go to class every time because exams are based off of lectures in class, never used the book. There's multiple exams but one gets dropped and others are graded leniently
She was one of my favorite teachers on this campus. She goes over the tests with you and drops questions that the majority got wrong. You need the textbook, she does online quiz's on certain chapters in the book. You just need to show up so you can see you PowerPoint's. Studying those PowerPoint's are the way to pass the tests with flying colors.
The class was only test heavy because I took it in the summer semester. In a normal semester, the tests wouldn't be every week. Her slides are clear and simple, and she verbally explains each slide very well. She's very understanding and willing to help as much as possible to get the best grade possible.
i highly recommend this professor. I learned no many things from her and i am glad i am going to be able to have GEOG 104 with her. She is very passionate about what she teaches. We didnt even need the book, you just have to show up and take notes. Just pay attention in this class and you will pass with flying colors. Shes absolutely amazing
There's a lot of work to do, especially with reading the text and the quizzes for each chapter but it's pretty easy. It's a lot like a high school class. There are also a few discussion boards and a documentary so you'll definitely learn something about the environment.
Easy A
One of the best professors at CSN I have taken so far. You can tell she's passionate about what she teaches and is extremely knowledgeable. She has a lovely personality and is caring to her students. Her exams aren't difficult as long as you study your notes. Her assignments were interesting and I always learned something new.
Access code required to do HW and tests, but I used a two-week free access and did all 16 weeks worth of work during that time easily. Just four class discussions on canvas, no midterm or final and no essay. Amazing class and learned a lot. Easy science credit. I highly recommend.
Dr Giovanni is a great professor, she cares deeply about the subject and is always willing to help out students having a hard time. I recommend this class if you have a science back ground, if not get ready to study!
I took her online course which was fairly easy. Mostly done through my lab and mastering. Every week you have activities and a 25 question quiz which only takes about and hour. By the end of the semester you will watch a movie for a final and write a short paper. You do have 4 discussions throughout but it is opinion based.
I missed at least 4 days and still got an A in this class. she is so good I'm taking her next semester for a env ethics course. I also found her super hot!
Professor Giovanni furthered my love for environmental science and is truly inspiring! I would recommend her class to anyone. Typical workload with weekly quizzes and occasional assignments plus extra credit. Must do all assignments for an A or youll be stuck with a B+
She has changed my point of view of the world in general. Great professor and down to earth. She is very clear and gives great examples.
This teacher is absolutely amazing! For the things she has to discuss, she still manages to keep a very upbeat attitude. I wish this class could have been every day of the week. She is so inspirational. I am honored that I got to be one of her students.
She is hands down one of my favorite professors!! She explains everything so well and it is so easy to understand. She cares about the subject and her students. She is willing to help with anything to get the best grade. Make sure you take lots of notes and study them. As long as you pay attention in class, you will pass with flying colors.
Straightforward and simple class. She uses the online infrastructure to assign homework and tests. There will be a homework assignment and a quiz due on Wednesday each week for whatever chapter is assigned. Then every once in a while she will assign a written assignment about a movie, article, or video clip. Easy class. Do the work and pass.
very good professor, but sometimes uses profane language in class and also makes very demeaning comments about anyone with opposing views. I wouldn't recommend this class for anyone with conservative views. I got an A, but I had to really work for it.
Professor Giovanni was one of the best profs I've ever taken: she's caring, helpful, and is passionate about ENV. We had to read a chapter and take a quiz weekly, watch two documentaries and answer some questions, and occasionally post a discussion. I would take this class again in a heartbeat, I learned so much about the environment and my impact.
I love Dr. Giovanni; she is hilarious and really great at what she does. There is never a dull moment! I have never been more ignorant in my life about climate change until she opened me to the various situations regarding the affects it has taken on the environment. There is a lot of reading, but it is all doable and interesting to read about!
She is an AMAZING teacher! She is so passionate and it is very apparent. This class will make you want to be an environmentalist. We do have quizzes that are done online. Must study for her tests. We watch about three films and she gives extra credit opportunities. Can't turn in assignments late. The lectures are a good amount of writing.
You for sure have to earn your grade, but don't worry she makes you want to. You can write your assignments how you want your not graded on grammar but more so on content. And she reads everything. Don't miss class. Exams are tough. Very captivating.
This professor is amazing! Her lectures can be boring but she really tries to get her students engaged. Textbook is required to read and you need to write notes if you want to pass. Attend class and make a friend! Notes shown in the PPW in class will NOT be visible when she posts them on Canvas. THEY WILL BE BLANK. Go to class, listen, and pass! :)
She is AMAZING!! She does give a little bit of extra credit. If you show up and take the notes, read the chapters, and do the online quizzes, then you will do fine. I did have to join Netflix to watch a few of the documentaries she requires. Some of the test questions are tricky. She wants you to think. And more than that, ACT!!
One of the most passionate professors I've had! The subject is fun to learn since she'll crack jokes, but is very lecture heavy. She also doesn't post the lecture notes so try not to miss class. Her exams are a bit difficult; you will not get higher than a C if you don't study. Once in a while, she will assign fun project assignments.
She is very passionate about what she teaches, and she teaches so great! She interacts with all students and is precise with her directions and expectations. She responds quick and truly cares about her students.
She is probably the best teacher ever. She is so passionate about teaching about the environment and she gives really good feedback. Definitely recommend!! The lectures are normal, not really required to write down the slides but needed for the exams. Three exams and small quizzes on canvis.
Most homework is done through MyLab and Mastering which is not too difficult. The rest is a simple response assignment every one to two weeks. The assignments ranged from articles and podcasts to watching and writing about a documentary she had us watch. Interesting and straight-forward class.
Professor Giovanni's class is so inspirational. I thought I was pretty aware of the damage we are doing to Earth until she shows you the reality of things. Class was easy enough to get homework done within a few hours a week, the movie and podcast assignments were unfortunately terrifying, but also gets you fired up to be the solution.
Most of the homework was done through Mylab Mastering. It's a lot of reading but it's fairly easy homework. The rest of the homework was just watching documentaries and reading articles. No tests or quizzes, simple and to the point. She answers emails fast and grades assignments quick. This class was fun and I recommend it!
I absolutely loved Dr. Giovanni's class! She's an amazing teacher and really inspired me to want to learn about the environment and our relationship with it. She updates her coursework per semester, and I can tell she's very dedicated to her class and students. There's a lot of reading, but it's all very interesting. There are a few extra credits.
I took ENV101 from Professor Giovanni, and honestly I enjoyed it so much I wish I could take it again with her in person. Very current & thought-provoking material, but not too hard at all. Easy A if you put in the work. She's also very personable, down to earth, and gives great feedback and grades quickly! Thanks Professor G.
This professor is wonderful. If you are up to it you can finish her class in about a month except for the last few extra credit surveys. Most of the answers to the homework are found online. Easy A. Got a 102% in the class overall. A few movie reviews and some podcasts reviews as well. Pretty easy.
COVID class: AMAZING! She is respectful, friendly, and fun. Assignments are EASY! Lectures are optional but class notes help on the tests/quizzes. 100% would take her again if I could. Read the book for the quizzes and youll do great. You want an easy A and a fun class? THIS IS IT! But dont slack! Note: Textbook can be any version from anywhere.
Very interesting class, and I learned a lot. There's one weekly homework assignment along with weekly open book quizzes. There's only 2 Exams and the Final. She also gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. As long as you do the assignments you will have no problems passing.
Professor Giovanni is seriously one of the best teachers Ive ever took. She is so passionate about her classes and the assignments are extremely easy, if you put in the time and effort. Theres a lot of quizzes from the book chapters and homework but theyre super easy. Shes a caring and wonderful teacher and has amazing lectures.
I LOVED this class and Professor Giovanni was great. She is incredibly clear with her expectations within her assignments. As long as you read and do the weekly assignments and quizzes, you'll pass easily. No exams!
MKG is a great teacher who cares about her students! She is kind and passionate and keeps her assignments exciting and DIFFERENT. Remote-learning is through Zoom and she's VERY clear about her grading. She's so dedicated to her topics and WANTS her students to do well! There's a bit of homework but all super easy assignments that keep you engaged!
Very passionate about what she teaches. There are about 1-2 assignments and 1 quiz due every Sunday, but they aren't difficult at all, just a little time-consuming (quizzes are open book also qzlet ;). 3 major quizzes (proctored). LOTS of extra credit and they truly help loads. Very lenient grader, just meet the criteria and you're good.
The BEST! Lectures through zoom, keeps it so entertaining yet educational by going over the book chpts that she quizzes on. Book was $6 on eBay. 2 exams, 10 quizzes, 5 EC, no need to stress for exams since weekly HW counts for most of the grade. Lenient grader and SO kind! Highly recommend shes a wonderful teacher that other profs could learn from
I highly recommend taking this class! Really easy and fun! Every lecture is super interactive! All assignments are very informative and interesting! There is a quiz due every Sunday. It's open book and not hard at all! Professor Giovanni is super sweet and very passionate about teaching. You will love this class!
Prof. Giovanni is quite literally the best professor I have ever had, attending both UNLV and CSN. Attendance is required since the exam questions are taken straight from her lectures. If you show up and participate in this class you will pass with flying colors. Making it very easy to get a high A. I highly recommend taking her class!
Professor Giovanni is hands down the best professor I have ever had. She really cares and is passionate about the subject she teaches. Only reason I got a B is I missed a few quizzes due to my outside obligations otherwise I would have gotten an easy A. She really cares to enlighten us as students and get fired up about the environment.
Honestly guys, if you're needing to take an Environmental Science class, this is the one!!! I'm glad I researched before enrolling and based on Professor Giovanni's reviews, I knew I had to take her class. Attendance is not required, but she does lecture for you to take notes so that you can study & use them for quizzes. SUPER EASY! PROMISE! :)
Professor Giovanni is amazing! Super passionate about the material. A decent chunk of work every week, but not unmanageable. Usually there'll be a chapter quiz and a documentary or podcast with a few short-answer questions. A lot of RMP reviews say a professor cares-- Giovanni actually does. You won't regret taking her!
She is an amazing teacher, actually the best teacher she is so awesome at what she does! She is straight to the point she tells you what you need to do gives you answers gives you study guides like what else do you need!!! If I could take her again for all my environmental science class I will!! 100% take her you will not regret it!!! PROMISE!!
Dr. Melissa has been the most upspoken and inspirational teacher I've had! If youre not open to others' views, please don't take her class because she keeps it real! I've never been handed so much extra credit opportunities and have had such a caring loving teacher as her so know it'll be a roller coaster of a ride but well worth the heart attack!
She is one of the best professors ever! She's so sweet and funny but also keeps it real when talking about all the injustices happening right now. The assignments are interesting and fun to do. She also has them all open to do them in advance. There's also extra credit every month. I will really miss her class!
Dr. Giovanni is an incredible professor and I feel as if I've truly learned things that will be used in my life for years to come. The information and assignments are very straight forward and as long as you stay on top of your assignments (which will include a few documentaries), you'll do just fine.
She is such a great professor, and she teaches you all about global warming. I didn't know what it was at first, but the more I learned about it, I agreed. I am not smart at all, but I learned a lot from her than other professors, and her assignments are unique, not hard at all. Trust me to take her.
Professor Giovanni was the best professor I've had since starting CSN. Really enjoys what she does and has a true passion for teaching. She is caring, funny and understanding. Gives plenty of time to complete work. No need to purchase the book most hw is watching documentaries or short videos. Provides extra credit. DEFINETLY RECOMMEND HER.
I took the 8 week summer course. Each week you have to do about 4 assignments through my lab and mastering and then 2-3 assignments which included articles or videos along with answering questions. Professor Giovanni likes to hear your opinion on the topic and gives great feedback! If you have an issue just send her an email and she'll fix it!
I love her. I have never loved a professor like I love Dr. Melissa. She made me so educated and care about the subject. She explained everything so well, let me tell you I sure know what entropy is lol. A lot of assignments are based on what you feel. The only aspect I felt was difficult was the exams but just study as usual and you're good.
I chose the in person class thinking it would be easier but to be honest it was so hard. All she did was go over notes on slides. The professor never went over any assignments ever. All the assignments are worth 70 to 90 points. Overall I wouldn't recommend especially if you struggle with a heavy work load.
Professor Giovanni was a very inspirational professor! Her online class consisted of 16 DSM quizzes, 15 homework assignments, and 13 written assignments. She is not a harsh grader. As long as you answer all of the questions for the written assignments and do some of the extra credit, you should be fine.
I hated this class so much.
she assigns way too much reading and it is all repetitive.
im not sure if the professor fell off this semester but this class was the most dreadful. actually attending class took so much energy out of me. 0/10
Dr. Giovanni is great! She makes the lectures in class relatable and fun. Teaches from the book and throws in interesting related topics that really help make this a well-rounded 101 class. She offers extra credit at the end of the semester you honestly won't need it if you just do all the assignments. Really had a great time learning in this class
Dreaded coming to this class every time.
I loved Professor Giovanni. She is really passionate about Environmental Science so she'll definitely help you understand the material and help you do well in the class overall. She is really kind and she responds to emails in a timely manner.
I hate this class so much, I can't wait till the class end.
Best professor ever. She is super nice and gives so much extra credit. Literally just do the work and you will be good. She is very passionate about her class. Take her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Her in person lectures are terrible. All she does is read off of slides the whole time. It's no way to learn as it isn't engaging at all. You will be teaching yourself. The exams are ridiculous. Don't take this class if you want to suffer the whole semester.
The workload in this class is why I wouldn't recommend it. It's ridiculous.
The professor is whatever. Her way of teaching during the lecture is very dreadful. All she does is read sentences off of a power point, while we write notes. It's very hard to stay focused when it is so dull. The assignment workload is very draining. Overall, she is okay, but you can definitely pick out a better professor.
1 assignment weekly; midterm/final with lockdown. very passionate about her field & lectures were interesting. assignments are super easy (ie would ask simple questions from articles she gives you or on your own opinion). lots of extra cred given as well.
Literally the best. Super interesting lectures with only one weekly assignment which were super easy (ie read an article and say your thoughts, watch a documentary and answer questions, ect) There is a textbook but its not required and only two tests that are in a lockdown browser + a ton of easy extra credit
Professor Giovanni was one of the best professors that I've had not only because of her enthusiasm towards teacher, but also because of how simple her class was. I was her first class that didn't have to buy the textbook because she no longer made it mandatory. Class consist of taking notes everyday, and completing a homework once a week9/10 class.
I liked this class because the prof was very passionate and provided good feedback on assignments. Midterm/ final have lockdown browser, and the lectures are mostly slides. You listen to podcasts and watch documentaries but the content is engaging. She has a geology background and provides some fantastic insight, but can get off topic at times.
I really loved this class! She's very understanding of the fact that it's only a 101 and tries not to make it too difficult, but you still learn a lot. The weekly homework assignments generally require some reading, but they aren't difficult if you follow the instructions and they are very informative. The textbook is recommended but not mandatory.
Throughout the course, the professor was not able to be reached very often via email. The course itself, the readings did not match with the homework or quizzes and often I used Quizlet to complete what wasn't told in the readings. Would recommend someone else if you need a better structured course that makes sense.
A ton of assignments but you do them at your own pace i did 8 week class with her pretty easy self explanatory
You teach yourself
Easiest class I ever took in the summer. Most assignments and your grade will be based on the Pearson website (~$100). You'll also sometimes get assignments on canvas that are watching videos, reading articles, and answering questions. All still an easy A. That's literally it for the semester. Best of this class, No exams, and no hidden tests!
Dr. Giovanni was BY FAR my FAVORITE CLASS EVER! She was so kind and it was clear she cares a lot about her work. I will admit, the workload was a bit on the heavy side, but it shouldn't take more than a good hour or two if you're proficient. Nothing super difficult. There is no midterm or final, plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
A majority of the lectures come from the MyLab Mastering Pearson course thingy, but there are fun documentaries that she assigns us along with questions to answer. Very informative course. Dr. Giovanni is very passionate and encourages us to take personal steps to help save the environemnt.
adored every second of this class. lots of reading for the homework and the midterm and final are a little difficult that being said. If you do the extra credit and attend class and take notes easily a. got 80% and 70% on my midterm and final respectively and still earned an A because of extra credit. She's very understanding and a great teacher
Awesome teacher. I learned more from her assignments than from the textbook. You have to pay for the textbook to gain the online work. Chapters are long. So make sure you start reading at the beginning of the week to break up the chapter. 2 tests on each chapter. It isn't too bad if you actually read the chapters. Learned a lot from her!
very nice teacher!!! assignments r done on pearson and on canvas but are very simple to understand :> would love to take one of her classes again!
I took her ENV 101 class & loved it. She offers the BEST & EASIEST extra credit! Weekly connect assignments (super easy) & 1 bullet-point essay. One negative comment, she's very left-wing politically & makes it evident in every assignment. Each assignment feels politically motivated & you have to answer the way she expects. She's very kind though!
Super easy class. 2-3 assignments a week but could all be done in under 10 minutes. Super easy going and great teacher, shes very understanding, would recommend
I would take this class again. There is a lot of homework, but if you keep up with it, you will be ok.
Professor Giovanni is by far one of my favorite professors of all time. Her class was extremely educational and made me want to do better in terms of protecting and preserving our beautiful, natural environment. If you don't show up to class, you will miss out on a lot of important information but I HIGHLY recommend students to take this course!!!
The assignments for this class were pretty short and manageable. There were about five assignments due per week (all due on Sunday), so the workload was easy to manage. The professor was understanding about assignments that I missed, and was overall kind and respectful.
Probably one of the best professors I've had, especially in science. The entire class was at your own pace so you could finish whenever you met deadlines. Responded quickly and gave us interesting topics to write about in a weekly writing assignment. You do have to purchase a textbook to get access to the assignments on the site. Wonderful teacher.
I took this professor during the summer. I liked how inspirational and eye opening the class was. She gives you the same type of writing assignment extra credit in the beginning of the course and at the end. Some specific things abt her class: watch Breakdown Episode and answer with a paragraph and is very open to student input to her assignments.
Revived my passion for learning about the environment. Dr. Giovanni is truly an amazing, caring person. Hilarious in her lectures but you'll remember everything. Group assignments are fun and engaging too and the class isn't hard! She's really passionate about her job and field and she wants you to be passionate about the environment too!
Honestly, the best professor I've ever had. Her lectures are incredible and it's obvious she's passionate about what she teaches and cares deeply for her students. No textbook. Attendance is not mandatory. The exams are fairly easy and also based off of the things she talks about in class, so I would say it's important you show up. 10/10 professor
A very passionate professor who cares a lot for the future and understandably wants her students to share the same sentiment. You will most definitely come out of it learning something incredibly valuable, whether it be about corporation corruption or how people power makes a difference. Even if you are only taking this for credit, it is worth it!
Professor Giovanni wants her students to fight for a better future, and that starts with education. She is going to show you the deadly and depressing effects of climate change in lectures and HW, but she wants those emotions and feelings to spur a desire to act, to fix our planet before it's too late. I wish more professors had her passion.
If you're thinking about taking her, TAKE HER! I had her in person class. An extremely easy class and no textbook was used! So while attendance isn't necessarily required, all your notes will be from lectures. Just show up to make sure you pass for tests. All assignments are laid out at the beginning of the semester. You can get ahead if you want
She is a great professor, the lectures are engaging and helpful. Her class is a great intro to Env sci. this course covers everything related to the env. Homework's were thought provoking, and exams were enjoyable as you don't need to know specific info but rather support your claim which is a great skill to build for those in STEM. overall 10/10
She is an amazing teacher and is very passionate about the environment. One assignment every week, very easy, and can be done within 2 hours. Her exams are just 10 written questions, so not very difficult. Most obviously, a liberal and I LOVED that about her, so if you do not agree with that, then best to stay away! Overall, EASY A!!
Amazing teacher! Homework is easy-mostly watching documentaries and answering questions. No tests or final, just do the homework to pass. She's chill, caring, and truly inspirational if you care about Earth and the problems around you. Videos are interesting and class is stress-free. I learned so much from this class. I'd 100% take this again!
Awesome, amazing, learned very insightful!
Lovely and insightful woman overall. Hypnotically millennial in her cadence. Didn't know Spongebob references but had good life/activism advice. Homeworks consist of giving your opinions on various videos/articles and all open at the beginning of the semester. Exams are easy. I wish I had the time to talk to her more after class!
Such an amazing professor! As long as you show up to class every day you'll be fine. You can buy the textbook but it isn't mandatory and you'll do fine as long as you show up.
Anyone who rated this professor anything less than 5 is CRAZY! this is the best professor in the entire school! her teaching style and passion for what she teaches is incredible. The class is lecture heavy as she teaches for the entire class, but she is very entertaining and passionate about it all to the point where she'll change your mind. 10/10
LOVED DR. GIOVANNI's CLASS! She brought so much awareness on environmental issues and is very passionate with her lectures. There is tons of extra credit opportunities to help maintain an A+ grade. As long as you attend each class, you will be able to pass the midterm and final.
I liked taking Professor Giovanni's online class and the work was very manageable as long as you scheduled your time and put effort into the assignments. She is very passionate about the subject and knowledgeable. Overall great professor!
Professor Giovanni was great with lectures, caring, and made science interesting! The class was easy and you ACTUALLY learn about the environment and our impacts. She's worth taking if you're interested in actually learning. The class is lecture heavy and has an assignment per week.
Professor Giovanni is AMAZING! Textbook is through McGraw Hill. Lots of video watching and text entry assignments but they're easy. She encourages a lot of opinion-based answers around topics discussed in the modules which is nice if environmental science and climate change are important issues for you. 10/10, would take her again!
