Calculus is a pretty hard class no matter what teacher. she explains things in different ways a lot of the time that you would never learn in other classes that make math SO much easier! If you don't know basic trig or algebra you will struggle if you don't brush up. She is always willing to help students during office hours. taking her for calc 2
She teaches calculus for those who have already had calculus experience. She rushes through material, does NOT explain it thoroughly. I have taken several math classes at Edmonds and Melissa is definitely at the bottom of math department. She knows math but doesn't bother explaining it. She takes longer than any other teacher to grade quizzes/exams
She doesn't cover everything you need to know--somewhat expected in college, but still. Also, her test/quiz time given is WAY too little for how much content is put in. Nearly no one finishes completely, and the questions are completely unexpected and difficult for the entire class. Many students I know are complaining about the difficulty.
She doesnt explain material, instead she gives answers to hw probs taking up literally all class time. Don't use book she rewrites probs from webassign. If you want to do well then consider transferring to a teacher that does offer an explanation to how to learn the material. She does give pity points on tests since everyone would otherwise fail.
If you get Melissa Hope, There is no Hope. Prepare to teach yourself.
Half the class time is typically spent going over homework. Lectures are fast-paced as a result; often it feels she is rushing over some material. You will end up self-teaching a lot. Quizzes aren't too hard, but time may be an issue. However, you are given plenty of time on the final. Overall, very demanding teacher.
She usually spends time going through the homework if you have question about them, which I think is useful as I learn more and get to know the materials better. She teaches kinda quick sometimes but she explain how to come up with the formulas that helps you truly understand the materials ,not by studying by heart tons of formulars
She integrates analogies with Calculus - that helped me so much. Her quizzes/tests (HIGHLY ADVISE YOU TO STUDY/DO FLASHCARDS) relate to the hw problems we do. It was hard understanding her during the word problems portion - that's where I died. She did give "pity" points for tests, so that saved me. Does not give a review sheet though, good luck.
Ms. Hope is extremely my favorite teacher. She explains well in class despite her fast style teaching. Quiz and Exam are mostly came from homework, so be prepared. Ms. Hope is a generous teacher. She will give you some credits for wrong answer. I also like how she interacted with her students in her class.
Melissa is a cordial teacher. Despite of her swift teaching pace, she explains things clearly. The class is not boring. Melissa illustrates things pretty well. Really thankful to have her as my Calculus 2 teacher. Don't forget to show up during her office hours!
Please be wary of this teacher. She will not explain what you did wrong on any of the required weekly written assignments. Instead she will tell you what you did wrong and have you look at an answer sheet. Also, she definitely does not provide enough time on the midterms to ensure quality work is being done on the test.
Her math class is excellent. Her examples in the class is good for you to understand why to do so rather than reciting formulas. Homework is a kind of hard, but she can always help if you need. As long as you know how to get homework done, quiz will become much easier. In sum, the key to learn well in her class is to work on homework carefully
Mrs Hope won't answer your question if you ask her. No help at all during the course. Moreover, when you take this course, everything will be a whole bunch of confuse. Good luck !
An experienced and competent teacher. Attentive and responsive if you're lost, generally clear the first time. Melissa Hope seems almost too generous with her time, addressing student confusion and concerns. Also, her math analogies are adorable. Literally all of them. She could wax rhapsodic about numbers in a moleskein and sell it at mall kiosks.
Melissa doesn't do a well job explaining things clearly and getting back to students. I have posted questions in the morning about work due tonight and it's been 8 hours and she still hasn't responded. This is not a first time either. I feel like I cannot depend on this teacher for help at all and pretty much have to teach myself.
She always gives you help with anything you need, and she has tons of different resources posted to wamap. She really looks out for you and gets to know you, too. Once, I forgot to do my homework, and she emailed me to make sure I was okay.
By far the worst teacher I have ever went through. Take the time and read other ratings and dont make the mistake of taking this class. Teacher is friendly but her teaching style is horrible. No explanations for chapters, and while doing homework, you'll end up teaching yourself.
Calculus online? Eek! It was fine; Melissa was great. Responds w/i 24 hrs. Do your homework early. Post pictures of your work if you need help. She's responsive, but has her own life too. Go in to campus if you are confused. Prepare to dedicate 20-30 hours a wk to homework and be sure that you are SOLID in your algebra basics.
Best Math teacher in EdCC.. he used flipped classroom method in our Class. We had quizzes every week. If you can spend time for study about 2-3 hours per day.. then you'll be good
Melissa was great. She explains things well and encourages us to understand so we don't have to memorize things. The best part was that even though this was an onsite class, she's online throughout the week answering questions on the homework forums. I was able to get help from her every time I needed it.
I think she's amazing. She was always there whenever I needed help, replied within 5 hours or less most of the time. I hated math but after studying I've understood the core of it. I took precalculus 144 wit her. Although I only scored 2.5, she motivated me when I myself left hope of passing. A strict grader, but that's what made me work harder.
Melissa is a very good teacher on a very tough subject, she is willing to take the time to make sure you understand the concept behind the math and cares that you learn too.
Thank you for everything
Melissa seems caring but she is strict as hell. Her teaching method is too pushy. She wants students to work in groups, which is just passing her responsibility to teach students.
Great class, pretty hard course though to be expected from math. However, because you do most of your homework online you don't really need to show up to class. You will likely use WAmap to do quizzes and homework, be prepared for about 6 hours of work a week.
She isnt the worst ever but the amount of homework is absolutely insane. She isnt bad but she doesnt care about you or your problems she'll ruin your grade no hesitation. Her teaching style isnt that good so alot of self teaching. Did I mention the insane amounts of homework? Overall if you put in work you'll survive.
Melissa is an average teacher. She has a great passion for math, but her style didn't fit my needs to learn math. She really makes you focus on one way of solving a problem and then changes it completely on the test. She wants you to understand the math but never really did a good job on teaching how to interpret different solutions to the problem.
Melissa was an "okay" teacher. She's very caring and overall a nice person, but the way she teaches is very confusing & unclear. All of her lectures are written on the whiteboard and she goes on a very fast pace. She makes you participate in group work, which can be very tedious. It was a lot of self-teaching, which made the quarter pretty tough.
Her tests are hard and she does not really explain things well. She seems like caring, but it is hard to get a good score in her class. Her homework is absolutely insane. She cuts off the discussion grades if you are late even only a few minutes.
I love to take her class. She's really kind. One time, I was late for the test, but she still gave me more time to do it.
Had her for Math141 onsite, Math142 online, getting ready to take her Math151 class. She's the best teacher for my type of learning, Math concepts (so far) have come to me pretty naturally, but I've always been much too lazy about homework. her near daily assignments helped me do my homework often rather than all at once and I can study alone.
Melissa is one of the best teachers I have ever had in Edcc. She explains in a way that you can understand quickly. She doesn't like giving formulas and I knew some people dislike it that way. Her exams are reasonable as long as you finish all the assignments and class activities. I would take her class whenever she gives lectures.
I've had Melissa for 4 classes (in her calc2 now). There is a lot of homework thru WAMAP, which I find great as someone who has trouble making myself study stuff if it isn't graded. Seems like she's on WAMAP helping her students every minute she isn't in the classroom. Really great at helping you understand. I definitely recommend taking her!
It is hard to get a good grade in her class. Very accessible outside of class and will help you with homework which is the nice things I can say. Downside is very tough grader, fast, and lots of self teaching. If you like to do things by yourself and like a personal challenge, this professor is for you. Prepare yourself for quizzes every week.
The practice tests are completely different from the real tests. She'll always tell you that most of the problems in the text will come from the Wamap exercises, but it's not true, she makes up her own problems for the test and they are totally different. Her way to explain can be very confusing, and she's such a tough grader.
The entire course was absolutely fine. The homework was a bit much, but it wasn't hard to handle. Everything was good until the final where she put multiple questions on it to which I didn't understand how to solve. I practiced with over 120 problems before the exam and I still didn't understand how or why she put those problems on the test.
Melissa is a great teacher. She has very creative teaching strategies. Tests are not hard because she gives you example tests from previous years to review and buch of homework to practce. But online are sometimes hard and there is 2 hour limit. But at the end of the year you learn a lot of new knowledge.
She is a great teacher. Her teaching style is great but maybe not for everyone. Half of the class time is to work in a group to workout problems thats related to the previous video assignments on wamap. If you are good at understanding video lectures, Mellisa is a perfect choice for you and her teaching style can be extremely effective.
I had Melissa Hope Spring 2019, I feel like her teaching style doesn't match my preference. She makes you work in groups and if you were the one who struggled, you would be a weight on the group's shoulder. You would let your group down. If you don't well on a problem, she will literally deduct a ton of points. Her grading is ridiculously strict.
I had good grades in High School math and this was the most difficult math class I have taken starting out as a college student. Melissa is a tough grader on tests and can ding you for simple mistakes.
No matter how hard you try, it is a hard class. She tells you not to memorize things and when it's a test and you needed to memorize it. The way her class is structured is unorganized. Working in groups does drag you down if she chooses groups for you. Melissa is also a tough grader and doesnt show mercy when grading. Take if you want a challenge.
Very tough grader. Written work is difficult and dings you for simple mistakes. If you want to pass her class, you need to look over your work and quizzes before every test. Sometimes she throws random curveballs on tests. Quizzes every Sunday, but there is a time limit.
The professor is nice and will answer questions. But, if you fall behind by even one assignment, you will not survive this course. Set aside at least 20 hours a week to do homework and you will have homework every night along with quizzes. I took her online Math 141 and I will never take another online math course again.
She's a great person overall, very nice and considerate, but not on the amount of homework that she gives. I don't really understand what she teaches sometimes, its often too complex. So, in all honesty, I learned a lot more from the video assignments she give online (with the mathispower4u youtube videos) than I do from her lectures.
Homework is ridiculously long and she would be a harsh grader on tests and quizzes. There is written work which is absolutely difficult and it would make you ask help from classmates and go to her office hour. Tried my best in that class, but did not pass her class last quarter and currently taking the course again with a different instructor.
Worst math class I have taken. Take it if you want to not be able to do anything beside math homework. The homework is long, tedious. Its onsite but 5 mins of instruction happens in class. Only way to learn is videos. Showing up to class is useless. I would definitely not recommend this instructor. Had about 200 problems the weekend before exam.
i was in her online math 141 and math 142 courses, which Ive heard are pretty much identical to the on-site courses, the only major differences being you dont have to show up every day and you can get to decide when you take tests. I had a great experience and would recommend her to anyone and everyone. I loved this class and Im sad its over.
Melissa's a sweet person & probably the most diligent instructor I've seen. She DOES expect you to work hard if you want a good grade. Homework assignments are due almost everyday (5 days/week usually). Expect to study for many hours if you want that A. Many of her assignments require elaborate work to be shown & she is thorough. Overall, good.
I've had different math teachers at Edmonds College and Melissa is not like the rest. Other math teachers are more considerate towards students. This professor's way of teaching isn't my style. Melissa is a tough grader. She made me feel like I wanted to give up and change majors when she told me I didn't belong in the math class.
Melissa Hope is the only teacher I have ever received that gives this much homework. She pretends to empathize with you on how busy people can be, but literally 1-2 assignments per day with each homework having 25+ questions that require hours of work. She is extremely traditional in her teaching, times are changing, this is not efficient teaching.
I've had a 4.0 in every single math class up until this one. When people on here say a lot of homework; they mean A LOT OF HOMEWORK. I'm on average spending around 30 hours per week just on this class. When you ask for help she gives the vaguest answers. Gives no feedback on activities; only says what part you did wrong. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!
She is probably the most talented teacher I know. She does give a lot of HW, but in math you wont pass without practice. Very reasonable grading, and she goes out of her way to help and answer questions. Quiz once a week, and hw everyday. Is one of those teachers who wants you to understand and not memorize, which I respect and appreciate.
This is the first time in math I have ever been so stressed out. She gives a TON of homework. She is also very tough on grading, marks you down on small mistakes. When you also ask for help she is not the best at explaining. Very hard to pass with an A. Last but not least be prepared to work at least 30+ hours a week on just math.
Prof. Hope is a great teacher. She gives lots of feedback and I recommend the WAMAP for learning online math. It is set up well and there aren't proctored tests. Melissa was always quick to email back and help with problems. The only problem is that she is a really tough grader and there is a ton of homework. Expect homework everyday.
Melissa is a tough grader and has ridiculous amounts of homework.
REQUIRES A LOT OF TIME to study for. Lots of homework and very tough on exams. I used to have a 4.0 until I took this teacher. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!
A test on week 2 and she said I copied and pasted from chegg and got 0. I've never heard this website before, until she mention it. Even if I did, I would make a difference from chegg so it wouldn't raise suspicious. On day after final, she made me do works in front of her. She just hates me. Do not take her class.
A lot of people don't like the way Melissa teaches but I think she's one of the best professors for math at Edmonds. Most professors give incredibly easy homework and then put really hard questions on the quizzes and tests. Melissa is the opposite. Usually, your final grades will be decided by tests, so that's why I recommend Melissa. She's fair.
A great teacher to get for Math 151. There are forums to use to get help from her and from other students. She teachers really well and each day she shows tricks on how to memorize a concept and/or what to do in a problem. When getting help from forums, she shows the answer easily and step by step to solve the problem! Great teacher indeed!
There was homework pretty much everyday and a quiz every Sunday. If you have a life, don't take this class because you're gonna need to put all your effort into to this one class. Get ready to take a selfie for the first quiz. She expects you to know and memorize everything. I've never been through more hell than taking this class. Reconsider. :)))
Too much tedious work for no reason that doesn't help me learn.
No exceptions what so ever, overly persistent, likes to accuse kids of cheating
Often plays favorites in class and grades hard. Don't take her class.
Accuses people of cheating. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Very picky grader. Feel so discouraged taking this class...
Very tough on grading. There are better professors in the college that teach the same material than this professor.
I have taken two of her math classes because I like the way she helps students. When you have a math question, she will inspire you first. If you still can't solve it, then she will tell you the detailed solution. I also like the amount of homework, which gave me a solid knowledge. If you want a solid knowledge, I suggest you take her class.
RUN! WORST professor I have ever taken in my life!! Does not care, links YouTube videos that are little to no help, you have to teach yourself most of the material. I have As in all my math classes but was about to fail this one Marked me wrong on 2 occasions when I was right and never fixed it. She cared more about being right than doing her job.
Other reviews are harsh--yes, there's work every day, but I've taken 3 of her courses now and was usually done within an hour or two. Homework and quizzes match lecture content exactly, and if you're stuck, just post on the forum and wait for a classmate or Melissa to help. I always thought I was bad at math until I took her--the work is worth it!
This teacher is horrible I do not and I repeat do not take this teacher she is horrible, I should have checked her reviews before I took her class she Is the worst teacher I have ever had and Im not exaggerating If there is any other teacher teaching the same math course take them because this teacher is horrid I dont know why Edmonds has her.
She was pretty confusing when trying to teach or explain something in class, so, be prepared for a lot of self-teaching/learning with some help when you get stuck. She responds super fast to her forums and to messages which is nice. Quizzes were also on time-slotted Mondays the week after the material.
She is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. Her exams are not clear at all and does not state her questions properly. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT.
She responds fast to forums and messages but you basically have to teach yourself. There is usually 1-3 homework assignments everyday and a quiz every week. I spent lots of time on homework and studying each week but still didn't do well on quizzes or tests. If you're not great at math, I wouldn't take her classes.
I like Miss Hope cuz she puts the hard questions on the HW to practice but the easy ones on the exam instead of the opposite way like other teachers do. Which I also like the lecture is straight forward, she does not ask you to memorizing but understanding. Math 011 which is supported class, she just adjust the volume of HW which is MUCH nicer.
Professor Hope is a great teacher who takes the time to ensure that every student understands the material. She gives weekly quizzes and helpful homework and in-class work, which prepares students well for exams, which aren't overly difficult. Students who put in regular effort and avoid procrastination will be able to pass the course with ease.
Took this class fall quarter 2022, and it was one of my best math class experiences I've ever had. She explains stuff in a very visual way, which made it way easier for me to understand. I wish she were teaching MATH142 this quarter so I could have continued the series with her.
She gives hard homework, but the lessons delivery is amazing and very fair in terms of grading. Got really bad grade in mid term and she was willing to take my finals grade as my mid term.
I would not recommend taking this professor. I had this professor years ago and attended her office hours. She would "try" to help me and it was not clear enough. Melissa told me that I did not know the fundamental theorem of calculus and I shouldn't be in this math class. Don't teach at all if you are discouraging people.
Melissa is one of the best Math teachers I've had so far at Edmonds College. Her teaching style is enjoyable and she makes sure to check on each student during in-class activities so no one comes out of class without learning anything. She gives on average, 1 homework and 1 video assignment per 2 days which is pretty normal for a calculus class.
well.
I just finished this class with Melissa and she is clearly THE BEST TEACHER I've ever met. Her lectures are very fun and cool. We get to do assignments in groups and she goes around and check us. She is ALWAYS AVAILABLE and she replys to your questions very fast. She is also very nice and caring. Best thing about this class: Attendance is required!
I had to retake this math class because of Melissa Hope. I took this class a quarter later with a different professor and passed. I would avoid Melissa at all costs.
Terrible professor. Lectures are unclear, tests are overly difficult, and grading is harsh. She's rude, unhelpful, and demands perfect attendance, showing no flexibility. Not a supportive learning environment—avoid if you can!
took her online course for calc 2. make sure to do homework EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, even when it's not due, and many assignments are long so you should take a look beforehand she very clearly cares about her students' success---she consistently replies to student forums very often and quickly with step-by-step guidance. but most of it is self-learning
I took Professor Melisa's Math 152 class three times online. She's the most dedicated teacher I've ever had. Always replies fast and helps beyond office hours. I failed twice but never felt discouraged. She supported me and helped me improve. Don't take her class online—take it in person. She truly cares and wants you to succeed.
Spends so much lecture time explaining why formulas work, but makes her tests in a way that "we can't just memorize formulas". 4/5 for difficulty because quizzes are okay if you study. Not enough time for finals, and very strict on grading. Homework is also ridiculously hard.
Out of all the teachers I had she is the worst teacher ever. I love math. I always received A in any math class but you will NOT pass this class not because of you but because of her. She doesn't teach, but just throws bunch of concepts at you. Tests are not what she provided in the study guide. If you're planning to have her RUN
just don't take her class. I struggled so much this class and I regret taking her class.
