Very good teacher but also extremely hard. Gives a lot of writing assignments and only a day or two to do them sometimes. Shes very hard with grading papers and if you dont like english dont take her. Your papers will be read to the class and you must contribute your thoughts or she calls on you.

Awsome professor. She gives challenging assignments, but she's determined to help you through them and always fleshes out what she wants. If you want to coast, I would not recommend her.
Horrible teacher. She is a feminist 100%. Terrible DO NOT TAKE!!!!
psychotic, rude and makes you feel completely dumb! she refuses to make helpful comments on the papers but instead tells you that you are terrible. she doesn't look at your paper to help you correct it but rather pawns its off on other students so you have no idea if she will like it or not. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! SHE DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AND EXPECTS US TO IMPROVE OVER NIGHT! MY PARENTS WASTED THEIR MONEY HAVING ME TAKE THIS COURSE! THIS LADY NEEDS TO GET FIRED!!!!!
Tough, but extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She really makes you earn your grade and improve your reading and writing. Lots of thinking required.
very hard
She is smart, funny, and really enthusiastic about her students' learning. Class is very student-centered. She encourages us to think, but not what to think.
Very Hard class!. She makes you work for your grade. Many papers and little time to do them. Always encouraging students to think for themselves and improve writing. Nice lady...sarcastic and funny...but tough!
RUN! If you are currently signed up for Professor Kaplan's class, best of luck. She is an extremely hard grader, her class is brutal to sit through and she's sarcastic on top of it. Don't take this class.
This lady does not know what she's doing. She seriously just makes things up. She thinks she is a great teacher, but really she is just very confusing and doesn't care at all if students are left behind wondering what the assignment was about. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Took for 101 and 102. She challenges her students- this class is not an easy A but it is worth the effort. She extremely improved my writing and reading skills. Her class improved my understanding of all my other classes. Must take if you want to learn. Do not take if you want to do nothing.
AVOID!!! Unless you enjoy spending 3 months of your life learning about the tempest and writing 23423 essays on it, then don't take this class. We had a whole book to work out of, yet all we talked about was THE TEMPEST and creating "new knowledge" through THE TEMPEST.

As an instructor she will make your semester a living H$#L!! She is never conformed with your papers, there is always going to be something wrong with them. She is biased, so whatever grade you get in your first paper is the grade you will continue to get on all your papers. She takes forever to grade papers so you dont know how you are doing.
Amazing experience. She turned a completely useless class into something really meaningful. She really cares about her students in and out of the classroom. Have to take her despite what other people have said. What you put in, you will get out!
If you take your work seriously, then you will do really well in her class. Once you committ to the time and effort, you will be in awe of how much you will learn. My writing and reading has improved so much in one semester. It's not easy, but it really helped me in my other classes.
Everything I wrote in this class was "wrong." I would never get any constructive criticism, just negative remarks. I doubt her grading style has anything behind other than her pure essence of evil. I got a C- in her class and got and A the following semester in EN102.
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS! she is probably one of the worst teachers i have ever had.She gives sooo much work in a little amount of time. She'll call on you when you don't have your hand raised and question EVERYTHING you say.she is awful, PLEASE take my advice when i say, DON'T TAKE HER.
This is a VERY DIFFICULT class. In high school english was one of the easiest classes and now it's the hardest. It is all essays in a very short amount of time. The readings are very difficult and about uninteresting topics. If you want to improve your writing then she could help but if you hate writing essays like I do then I would not recommend.

DO NOT TAKE! i had an extremely hard time in this course. she does not take time to work with you unless you have a "strong essay". i would not recommend this teacher AT ALL!
a lot of busy work. really changes students as writers. either likes you or she doesn't and that can affect her feelings towards your work. tough but worth it.
shes useless
Quite possibly THE WORST teacher you could get stuck with. She has no soft spot and gives the most confusing/difficult assignment/readings ever. Everyday you come to class, the first thing she'll do is remind (or in my eyes THREATEN) you that she can fail you at any moment especially if you don't come see her for help..but she's not good help.
Prof Kaplan is awesome! As long as you do your journals, show up to class and actively participate you'll be fine. She is also always willing to give extra help. I'm usually a B+ student in English and I ended the semester with an A because I showed her that I was trying and my work improved over the term, which is what she bases your grade on.
Great professor! Just as a warning the work is almost impossible; she'll assign you 100 pages of reading to annotate for one day and the essays are wicked long. This class is really hard but she's a great teacher who is willing to help you if you ask her. I'd recommend her if you're actually interested in writing.
Very difficult teacher. Assigns lots of work and favors the smarter students. If you are not an exceptional English student DO NOT take her.
she is extremely hard and doesnt care about anybodys opinion unless it agrees with hers.she could careless about her students and relates everything to sex.she is not nice at all..do not take her she never gives anyone the time of day unless you suck up to her which is hard to do.
INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR! Hard class, but if you want to be prepared for your Sophomore year, you must take her! This is not for the student who wants to "get by", but rather for the student who desires to LEARN! Brilliant woman and a mother at heart! Must take QU Professor-your life will never be the same and if you survive, neither will your writing!
Decent teacher. Never fall asleep in her class and do the work expected. Say at least one thing in every class and meet with her during her office hours. Meeting with her shows interest in improving and she will like you more if you do. If your looking for an easy class this is not it, but your writing really will improve if you do the work.
aweful.. she ruined my entire first semester. her assignments are long confusing and she makes you feel so stupid no matter what opinion to say that isnt the same as hers. NEVER TAKE.
Super challenging but i learned a lot actually. I however have a paper every night and they were usually due even before class time via blackboard. Would never take her again!
She is a diffcult teacher. However you will learn alot in the class. She loves assigning essays.Lastly, her outfits are so unique.
Probably the worst teacher ever. She makes no sense and the assignments are long and confusing. She calls on you during class and tries to make you feel awkward and dumb. Worst teacher I have ever had.
if youre not an english major ABSOLUTELY DO NOT take her. she gives so much work to the point where youll be stuck for at least 2 hours a day doing her assignments. plus this class was very controversial &can screw up some of your values. if you want to actually pass, what should be an easy class especially for non english majors, do not take her!
THE WORST TEACHER EVER! She asks the class questions on the reading, and no matter what you say she makes you feel stupid and dumb. Very rude in person, and over email. AVOID! This ruined my first semester, she gives SO much homework and assignments are sometimes due before class!
One of the best professors I've taken so far. As long as you read and take the time on your papers you'll pass. She gives pop quizzes but they're pretty easy. She's strict on attendance but only gave 3 papers total. Take her class its fun.
Professor Kaplan was an amazing professor. For my first college english course I wasn't sure what to expect, but she was a little tough. I still enjoyed the class, and if you show her you are trying by attending class and participating and also connection with her after class you should get an a! She gives alot of work though.
I wanted to like this class because I love writing. However, Prof. Kaplan made this almost impossible. Her attitude was very cool (almost rude) and she seemed unwilling to answer and slightly annoyed by questions. I met with her outside of class and she gossiped about other students in our class. My writing didn't improve at all.
I had her for EN101 and now EN102. Both sections are an insane amount of work. However, even if you don't realize it, if you work hard, your writing is going to get incredibly better. Even having her for another semester had improved my writing even more. Definitely worth the hard work
After a great semester with Professor Kaplan for EN101, I decided to take her again for EN102. I improved a lot as a writer and ended both semesters with an A and very strong portfolios. There's a lot of reading, but it's worth the hard work. EN102 had journal entries and 4 essays, but a lot of the journal entries set the tone for the essays!
During the semester it seemed like the work load was unbearable but looking back it improved my reading and writing levels immensely.
She'll make you write and grade kind of tough but she offers extra credit, make-up and no midterm or final exams. I'd take her again
I absolutely loved professor Kaplan. She was very straight forward with what she wants and wants every student to succeed. She expects a lot, but if you work hard and show that you care, you will end up with an A. Only 4 major essays throughout the semester, no midterm and a small reflection for a final that takes 2 seconds. Also, be ready to read!
If you're not an english person, transfer out now. She works you hard but you know what you're doing when you come out the other side.
Professor Kaplan was very nice and reasonable, if you did the work youll get the grade you earned. You will read alot and do a alot of peer work, like editing eachothers essays. Only had 4 big essays but alot of little essays inbetween too.
She is without question the most difficult professor, I have ever had. Expect two papers a week that could take 5 hours or more. I basically gave up my social life taking this class. If you survive the class you will do reasonably well. That's if you survive.
I took her for both semesters of english and thoroughly enjoyed her course. She has a tough class and makes you work for it, but you can see the results clearly by the end. Wouldn't recommend if you aren't at least somewhat english-inclined. Subject matter is also pretty interesting.
This class is not an easy A by any means. In fact, it was probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Prof Kaplan really makes you work for your grades. It's a portfolio class so it's all about growth. This class was a challenge, for sure... but in the end it was really rewarding. If you give this class your all, your grade will reflect.
pros: really kind and caring, genuinely wants to hear what you have to say, wants you to feel comfortable, very interesting subject matter, inspirational cons: lots of writing assignments, lots of reading, kind of a tough grader
By no means is Professor Kaplan easy, you have to work for her class, but that is the same for all EN 101 classes. Her class requires good skills of active reading and you will further that during her class. She expects a lot from you and if you put in the effort for her class your writing will improve drastically throughout the semester.
Professor Kaplan is so kind and genuinely cares about her students success. I was a very strong writing going into this class and learned so much from her. Take her class if you can. Not a crazy amount of work, it all counts in the end.
Lots of reading, uses 4 books in semester. There is a weekly group discussion and one that you need to lead, a weekly journal entry about the weeks reading. A final paper worth 25% of your grade. She is a tough grader and makes you work for it but provides good feedback to your work. Not an easy course at all, prepare to work but it's college.
Taking women studies with Professor Kaplan was the best choice I've ever made. She is a tough grader, but overall you learn a lot from WS101 and she makes class so much fun. She's hilarious and so chill, take her!!
She is a very nice person and the topics discussed are great. There is a lot of reading. The class is no lectures and all discussions. She will call on you if you don't talk. There are three essays and a few journal entries. You don't get a lot of time to complete things (2 days to read half a book or write an essay draft)
Pretty easy class as it was 0 credits, but it was a lot of work for a 0 credit class. If you are in the honors program, this is required your first semester.
Tough grader but pushes you to learn and develop yourself as a person and writer. Classroom style is more of the students leading the class, she doesn't lecture. It is hard but it is worth it because what you get out of it. Always available for help outside of the classroom which is great! 3 major essays. Definitely take and be ready to learn.
TAKE HER! WS101 with Kaplan was the best class I have taken at QU. She really truly cares about her students and though there is a decent work load, all of it I found to be interesting and eye-opening. creates such a great atmosphere for her students and lets you edit essays for a revised grade!
Not my cup of tea. I personally did not enjoy her as a professor though she did a fine job. Class is very heavy discussion wise and she will call you out if you have not participated. I was always nervous to contradict her in a discussion rather than excited to give input.
Professor Kaplan is a great teacher and a caring person. She can be tough but she does it to make you a better writer. There is a lot of class discussion but it really helps with the papers. There is a lot of work for the class but she choses great reads and I personally hate English class but she made it fun!
I absolutely love Melissa!! She's such an inspiring and kind woman. There's definitely a decent amount of work in this class, but the work is extremely interesting and eye opening. It really causes you to rethink everything about feminism and gender based issues. I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone and everyone!!
She is not open to debate issues. don't disagree with her!! She is not a tough greater although she can punish you by using your grade
One of my favorite professors. Melissa is a tough grader but the issues discussed in class are so pertinent and engaging. My essays averaged around 10 pages each so be prepared to write, then rewrite, then rewrite again. Melissa uses a peer revision system which is annoying at first but honestly helps a lot and improves your writing. A TON of hw.
This class makes me nauseous to even think about. More work than any of the classes that actually have to do with my major. Insane amount of readings. Essays graded very harshly. If your views don't completely coincide with hers she considers them wrong. It is not a class to discuss feminist issues. She shoves her views down your throat & that's it
Melissa is a really amazing human being but her classes can be a lot of work. There's a ton of reading every night for the class which tends to get tedious but it ends up being worth it. Definitely take her for this class if you're a feminist and want to take a deeper look at the subject or if you're just curious about women and gender studies.
This is a pass/fail class for the honors program. It's 0 credit, but requires a good amount of work. Bi-weekly meetings and journals. Heavy reading and discussion, but as long as you skim the reading and make a comment in class, you'll be fine. Melissa is hard to get a read on when you first meet her, but just treat class like a conversation.
She's a great professor but the class is a lot of work. There are a ton of readings you have to do, 5 journals, and 3 big essays that you must hand in.
If WS is your thing, go for it, but you will need to read an extreme amount of books and essays, which you will use on 5 (3-page long) journals and 3 major essays. U will need to do an in-class presentation and class participation is a large part of your grade. expect to need to talk a lot in this class.
Zero credit and pass or fail but the workload is excessive. The class itself centers around discussion and it gets annoying very quickly. Melissa doesn't try but she is infuriating. Even as a liberal the things she says makes me roll my eyes. Just skim the texts and say something in class and you'll be fine.
She's so kind and caring and gives great feedback. If you write a terrible essay, she will let you re-do it without consequence. She is understanding if you have to skip class and she clearly wants what is best for her students. This class is enlightening and easy and I feel that my mindset and writing has IMMENSELY improved thanks to this course.
Really nice person, but Intro to honors is a discussion based class. The readings were ridiculously long, but I never read them fully. All you have to do is submit the journals for each class reading, and youll pass the class. Super simple.
Shes really nice, but shes so annoying. She talks in a loud whisper so I spend most of the class struggling to hear her. She thinks she sounds so profound and eloquent when talking about discrimination, but I just cant take her seriously. I hope I dont have to take her again.
I had to do more work in this class than any other class and it was an elective. Kaplan expects too much out of her students. I had to write 5 journal entries along with 3 big essays for this class all with extremely detailed and confusing prompts. Her insight on the topic is very knowledgable but not worth the pain of all the work you have to do.
She seems sweet at first but is not open-minded. If you disagree with her in a class or outside of class, she will treat you differently. There are students she likes a lot which anyone can see, but if you're not on her good side, expect to have a rough time with her in class. She sends guilt-tripping emails to force students to come to events.
Very "girlboss yas slay" professor and in an annoying way. She clearly has favorite students (the ones who are obsessed with her honors program) and will treat you differently if you oppose her in any way. This was a zero credit discussion-based class that I just did other work in. Pointless.
She is really nice and wants her students to do well, so props to her for that. Personally I did not like or understand some of the reading material. I also never understood her instructions, I felt as though I was flying blind on assignments
I mean it was WP so it's not like it was very difficult. Melissa is a really sweet lady but even for a 0 credit class there was so much work and I don't really wanna know what she's like in credited classes. She's nice but as a teacher she can be brutal.
WGS was a very interesting class, but Melissa as a professor made it a bit difficult. While she makes the discussion based aspect very nice, the essays were a nightmare. Her prompts were weird and confusing and, when people in class asked her to clarify, she never actually made it easier to understand.
I loved the discussion based aspect of the course, however, you have to make sure that your opinion aligns with Professor Kaplan's or else she will make it clear when it does not. The "reflections" in this course had vague prompts with like 17 different prompts within them. Lets just say this is no easy A course.
Interesting course about feminist theories & great professor. Course includes 7 discussion boards, 7 personal journals, 1 final research essay. 7 weeks course required 2 texts, stay ahead of assigned readings, and email questions if something is not clear to the professor. Confirm texts editions & year with professor before renting/buying used.
Great professor, engaging conversations. Class is discussion-based and based on the readings, so be sure you've read them. Very welcoming environment. Essay prompts can be a little complicated, but for sure are manageable. She is always there to help you with ideas and talk about course content as well as real-world topics.
Not a great professor. The work she gives you is overwhelming. She assigns work like her class is the only one you're taking. Her assignment prompts aren't clear, especially for the final project. She wants us to do a presentation based on a research paper that goes with it, but wants the presentation done first. Confusing. Not taking her again.
Professor Kaplan cares deeply about her students and is very passionate about her job. She creates a safe and welcoming environment for open discussion. However, the outlines for assignments are very lengthy and confusing. There are high expectations set and a lot of material to cover.
Professor Kaplan truly cares about the students in her class and the discussion aspect in the class was really engaging. However, there is a LOT of reading and the writing assignments were confusing at times. There is a group presentation and final project that included a presentation and paper. Make sure to stay on top of reading and annotations!
There's a lot good about Kaplan, but also twice as much bad. The class and its discussions are interesting and enjoyable, but the workload is that of a 300/400 level course. The quality of the readings is incredibly inconsistent in its quality, and while she is willing to give extensions that doesn't help stop the work from just piling up.
Melissa is a very understanding professor, you just have to email her if you are having trouble keeping up with the workload. She grades based on: journal entries (1- 2 pages), 2 essays (6ish pages), a group presentation, and participation. There are quite a few readings, but those aren't too hard in general. She is a very good professor!
I loved this course. It provided a place for us to not only talk about current events but also about important topics. We don't only talk about issues involving women but also race, sexuality, age, class, and more. It is such a worth it class, and Melissa is such a great professor. 100/10.
Nice professor, interesting class! Discussion every class, so read the passages and be ready to participate; you're graded on it. It's super interesting, but it does cover triggering topics in a respectful classroom setting, but it's very interesting to learn more about. I would definitely recommend it if you're passionate about Gender Studies.
