She was by far the hardest professor i have had, not helpful whatsoever and a tough grader...
The above rating was correct. She is a hard grader, and she's not helpful. I even heard another teacher complain about her before, and she yelled at other faculty. She's by far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Take anyone else.
Very challenging. Not for the weak. Grades hard but gives good feedback if you take advantage of her draft reviews. Lots of reading. Doesn't like simplistic paper topics like parking woes. Helped my essay writing to where I don't have to pre-write.
Awesome teacher. She's no pushover and she gives a lot of work, with very strict guidelines for grades. If you work as hard as you should be working in college, you shouldn't have a problem in this class. I'd reccomend her for anyone who wants to write.
she doesn't really explain her assignments, and she's a pretty tough grader. That combination gives you a pretty low chance of getting a good grade in the class even if you work hard...
This class is not meant to be easy. But she is a good teacher and an interesting person.
She teaches way too fast and is not very effective at helping the students actually LEARN something.
Teacher knows english, but MUST include her political & religious rants. Wants students to drop her class, you learn absolutely NOTHING. Don't take her... she's a waste of time, as a teacher.
The major problem was that she corrected your essays until she accepted them but she wanted you to write just like her, so in the end, it was no longer your writing but hers.
Difficult class work hard, read, keep up with the essays and do the online resposes and you will do fine.
Melissa is a hottie. She is a great teacher, a passionate woman, and very fun. Sweet Melissa, I want you to be mine.

Children's lit. sounded fun and enjoyable. Every class she talked about her political & religious views. She is hard to understand on what she wants in the assignments and a hard grader; you have to write like her to get good grades. Also there are online posts - I didn't enroll for a online class!

She does not explain anything at all. She is never in her office hours, and is not very helpful. I had to drop her class, it was pointless to take it.
I decided to drop her class when I had to buy 7 books for her class and other people I talked to said she was a real B. the first 2 weeks because she wants people to drop her class. I decided I don't want to deal with that game playing. I'll take 1B next semester from some-one else.
She had a very ineffective way of teaching which in turn made a majority of students lose interest. By the time i dropped it, the class had lost nearly 1/4 of its students.
This gray haired dull teacher is just that - dull! She is so boring. She is unclear and not willing to help. She wants you to write just like her and agree with her. Every class she had something to say about Pres. Bush (even if you don't believe in him, don't bring it to school). Take someone else!
I can't bring myself to say that she is a "bad teacher" but she is definitely not "student friendly." She will tell you that your writing is "B.S.," but will not offer the kind of instruction that would help you to improve it.
She is very difficult to talk to, and is not going to like your writing, period.
Honestly probobly the worst teacher i have ever had. Definetly has an inferior complex about teaching at a junior college and feels the need to prove her intelligence during lectures where she tries to show off and prove how smart she is. Essays are criticized thoroughly and without any advice for improvement. Take ANYone but her, believe me.

She is a goose-stepping nazi in mary tyler moore clothing. She critisizes without giving any real advice, demands everything her way without saying what she wants, and her literary expectations are obscenely strict. SHE WILL NEVER TELL YOU THAT YOU DO ANYTHING WELL. by the time i had left, the attendence had dropped from 40 to 6.

Well...its a hard class no doubt. Did I enjoy it not at all. Does she scare me yes. But I did learn a lot of her class and how to write. That has to be worth something
While she was tough, I enjoyed her classes because she pushed me. Those who say she was overly critical or "too hard" just couldn't see that she was a perfectionist and wanted you to do your best. This is what's wrong with education-people are lazy & when a teacher pushes them, they call them "hard" because they have to work. I recommend her!

She is not a good teacher, she'll make you feel bad about yourself, and like several other people have said before me, she has a serious inferiority complex. She can not except that some people know more than her in some areas and is very quick to place blame or accusations on people. Not recommended.
I loved the content of the class, but it is so hard with her as a teacher. She will make the who class feel bad about an assignment that "was not done to her satisfaction", but she did not explain what exactly she was looking for. she assumes that you should know.

Melissa is a horrible teacher! Every time she looked at my essays with me she would tell me to my face that my papers were****, and I am not kidding. She was very rude and did not explain any of the assingments given. And she was never in her office hours because she was alyas with her son. She is a very unprofessional instructor! Do not take her!

Well well well. This teacher without any dout was the worst teacher in the world. She doesnt explain anything, makes you feel stuiped and puts you down any chance she gets. A class that started out around 38 students dropped to 7 around the mid terms. Needless to say shes a **** !
Melissa is a great teacher. She defines what is expected clearly. She does expect lots of hard work but I'm finally learning to be a good writer. Very easy to reach through e-mail, have always been able to set up appt. after her office hours.
Dr. Kort is without a doubt one of the worste teachers I have ever had. I have never felt more stupid in any of my classes as I had in hers. She contradicts herself and insults anyone, every chance she gets. More than half of my class dropped out before the first week and I regret not following them out the door. Its 1 of the worste classes ever.
She assigns good topics, but does not teach. she criticizes your writing, but does not explain much. she expects to assign reading, then let the class handle itself. she wants every students essay to be the same generic form. not a fun class, did not learn much from her.
Melissa Kort teaches as if she has an agenda. I failed her course, and retook it under a different teacher and received an A. She has a chip on her shoulder and teaches as if she hates men in general, and has a feminazi agenda. Horrible class. I should have dropped. HUGE workload too.
Worst teacher I had at SRJC. She would make me rewrite over and over and would tell me different things to change each time. I withdrew which left only 8 out of 25 students in the class. I took this class with a different professor that was really hard and got an A because he actually taught me to write. Steer really clear of this one!

I agree with everyones comments. She is very hard for a JC teacher, and doesn't leave any room for originality. She expects a lot out of the class, and give's lots of critisism, with not much motivation. When a teacher only points out the negatives, it's hard to stay positive. The class has dropped in numbers tremendously.

I learned a lot about writing argumentative essays and thats it. Her expectations are ridiculous and I doubt you will get an A or a B. Your grade is based on the amount of essays you turn in and she has to approve an essay before it can be turned in (which takes forever.) shes on a powertrip and passes very few students. take someone else!!!

I found her interesting, informative and committed to her subject, it is apparent she loves her subject. A fair grader, and in you go online, her requirements are clear and she sticks to them. Lots of reading, and discussion required
If she doesn't like what you have to say, don't plan on passing the class. She says that she's very open and encourages different topics of writing but really,she just wants something that she finds interesting to herself.
She's a tough grader, but she's fair; I never got a lower grade than I deserved. Her expectations are high and she expects you to think and act for yourself, and she forces your writing to improve. As long as you keep up with the reading and online posting and pay attention in class, you'll do alright. I learned a lot in her class
Kort is awesome. If you want someone to hold your hand, forget it. If you want someone to challenge you and expand your academic capabilities, she's fantastic. Repeat, you can't slack off and get away with it with Kort. Very rewarding class.
here's the thing: she's very clear, and can be helpful if you go to office hours, but you've got to do your work and be willing to do just that--work. i'm an english major, and i have never had to work so hard for an A in my life. she's very strict, and you will definitely get what you give. if you want an easy class i suggest you look elsewhere.
She was my first teacher at the JC after I came out of high school. I was an A and B student in high school, but this lady almost destroyed my hopes of college. Luckily I was able to drop her class and add in to a late start English 1A where I got an A!!! Mrs. Kort will make you redo an essay 15 times and simply won't accept it. Do not take her!!
If you are an english major, i recommend you take her class because its helpful. other than that,if english isn't ur major, try somewhere else first.
The hardest teacher I've ever had in my life. Prepare to work A LOT outside of class. Going to her office hour for help is a must. Work harder than you've ever worked in your life, and this class WILL pay off for you. I'm in ENGL5 now and it's a breeze. Kort made me a better writer, but you have to be prepared for the challenge and for critique.
Dr. Kort is a good teacher but you have to work if you want a good grade. My biggest mistake was falling behind on the writing journal and the 6 essays. She is a fair teacher and you receive what you put in. My essays have gotten much better, I just wish I had taken fewer units so I could get the most out of her class. Take many tutorials from her.
Hardest teacher at the school. Meanest and most self-centered lady in the county. If you are republican, plan to fail. If you are a democrat, also plan to fail, just not for political reasons. Do NOT share your opinion, because in her eyes you are always wrong. POWER TRIP!! PROBLEMS!! TRANSFER TRANSFER! Coming from a good student with good grades.
Plan on dropping or failing this class if you are a guy. She is only helpful to the women. She is a radical feminist & liberal, and if you plan on writing anything she doesnt agree with, you will do poorly. I have talked to other members of the faculty who agree she is the worst teacher in the school. Rumor has it her job is on the line.
She is a very frustrating teacher to have. She wants you to do well yet will not give you help or be encouraging. She looks down on beginning students and if your paper does not match her view then she will give you an F. She will make you redo a paper 5 or 6 times and still give you a C. Lots of Jane Austen which was very annoying.
A horrible professor. Despite what people say, she is very unfair. She expects way too much, and she isn't very much help at all. She definitely has a power trip, she puts herself above her students. She can't relate to her students, and her personality is pretty volatile. She makes the students feel awkward, very uncomfortable.
I went into English 1A excited and ready to learn because I loved english before I took this class. Now I am afraid to take english again. She was SO hard!!!!!!!!! Extremely unclear about what she wanted and what she thinks you should do. If you plan an aceing english 1a do NOT take her. I was so glad when the semester ended!

If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. Half of my class dropped and the other half all hated her ways of grading. She is tough and at times scary. I went to her for help on my essays and even when I went with her ideas and the thesis SHE gave me, i only got C's. hated this class and wouldnt recommend it.
Six essays in one semester does not sound like a lot, but when your grade depends on it and she won't accept it, it is very frustrating. This is a hard class, if you're not die hard on being an Eng. major then run away from this class, run away right now. Every tutorial Every office hour must be attended if wanting an A or B.
To future engineering/science/math students find a new teacher. Although you might be bright; your beacon of knowledge treads no weight in her world. I'd rather wipe with sandpaper than take her class again. Now if your major is English/Philosophy she will be your best stepping stone to future critical writing divinity.

Children's literatue, supposed to be fun, NOT FUN WITH KORT!!!Every 2 weeks you turn in an essay, you read 300 pages and you also have to do online entries every week..along with that, she gives a term project that is worth over half your grade!!! I'm an A student and I had to take my first "W". DONT TAKE HER!!!!
The expectations for this class are insane. Never miss a tutorial opportunity and see her in her office for extra help. I did all of this and still only got a C!
i did all the required assignments but still got a C becuz i didn't turn in an extra credit essay. i had perfect grades "B's" on all the assignments that were given.in her class, its either an A (if ur perfect) or a C (if u try really hard)

She's the devil. No really, RUN AWAY. I came into the class excited to learn, and within the first 2 weeks she basically told 90% of us that we weren't good enough to be in her class. She's disrespectful to others, and feels superior... I never had a JC teacher make me cry before her... DO NOT TAKE HER. Even English majors should beware.
I only had a short impression of her, but enough of one to know to stay away. She comes across as fairly snotty, and though she is intelligent, and appears to be a decent teacher, her attitude leaves a lot to be desired. I prefer a classroom environment where respect goes in both directions. If you like being talked down to, this is your class!
Most of the reviews here seem to be from real whiners who don't want to put any work into their class. Yes, you have to write six essays to get an A or a B. It really shouldn't be taking you longer than three weeks to get an essay up to college standards, especially when you're attending college. Suck it up, guys. She's a great teacher.
You people need to expect more from yourselves. Sure shes tough. If you want to cruse through this english class you should probably try a different teacher. She and I did not agree about a great many things but that never effected the way she graded my work. I got the grade I deserved and you all probably did too.
I liked Dr. kort a lot. If you want to be become a better writer and student, she has high standards that will help you achieve this. She is tough, but honest. Never miss a class and stay on top of assignments and you will pass. The classroom discussions are interesting, however, be sure you can back up what you say.
I'm an English major and I thoroughly disliked this class. It's more for the child-development major, those with kids, or those who love listening to a woman spend three hours talking about her family and personal views. It's maddening and not beneficial. The first meeting sets the mood for the rest of the semester. Worst professor I've had.
She seemed to be a tough and intimidating teacher at first, but she was actually very helpful. I actually found her sarcasm and humor quite funny, but I guess that depends on the person. I do admit she does tend to babble on and make the class seem boring, but I learned something, which to me matters the most.
Dr. Kort was one of the hardest teachers I ever had, but the lessons I learned from her have stuck with me. She had high standards and expected every one of her students to live up them. Her methods prepared me for University-level work. If you want to LEARN something, I highly recommend Melissa Kort.
I am an excellent student and received As in my three other courses, but would have gotten an F in English. Kort is very self righteous; class is spent in silence while the teacher has tutorials. Essays cannot be turned in until it is approved by the teacher; it took me the whole semester just to get two turned in.
Melissa is the hardest teacher I have ever had by far. She is very self rightous and self interested. SHe remingd you that she has a PhD from USC. She can sometimes be intolerant of those who do not grasp concepts quickly. If you're looking for challenge this is your professor. *SHE HAS A VERY HIGH DROP RATE*

The entire class hated her! Unprepared, NEVER responds to emails for help. Hates being corrected. Returns papers late due to TV shows. Arrives to class late. If you have something IMPORTANT & miss class she scoles you, but she can miss class for holiday events. So much for a flawless GPA. This class gave me a headache everytime! KORT IS A NO NO!
VERY CHALLENGING! Take only if you are a serious English student. What you've been doing in other classes won't be enough in Kort's. Trust me. To get an A, start working on essays 3 or so weeks before due, run your initial idea by her, and USE HER OFFICE HOURS! I almost died in this class, but it is the only JC class my writing has improved in.
Mrs. Kort is VERY hard. She expects graduate level work from JC students. It's not realistic. She's willing & available to work with you outside of class, but she's still very hard to please.
As a teacher myself, I found Kort to be deplorable. This was, by far, the worst class I've ever taken, and I have a Master's (so lots of classes). If she talked one more time about her Jewishness (so inappropriate), or her cherished son, I was going to puke. She acted so unprofessionally every class meeting. Huge, huge, huge disappointment.
Hard teacher to please, but start assignments early and get her advice/opinions. Follow her notes on roughdrafts, they're very helpful. You will benefit from taking this class! I EARNED a B in this class and it wasn't easy. She does talk about her personal life, but she is a mom like most of us. Nothing wrong with that.
HORRIBLE. My class was given a survey during class on Mrs. Kort's teaching. Many students, including myself wrote down that she was biased and had unfair grading. After getting back the results to the survey, she spent an entire class giving a lecture on the definition of "Biased".. Because according to her none of us knew the meaning..
Her arrogant attitude overshadows her instruction. Doesn?t answer e-mails and has class favorites. The class is made harder due to her poor instructional directions. It?s a disgrace that such a talented instructor due to her instructional limitations ruins the class for her students.
When I knew Melissa she was a very sweet and sensitive young woman with a sharp and inquisitive mind. Maybe you need to tap into her inner-child which might be hiding behind many of the negative impressions cited in her reviews.
MKort has an odd requirement of submitting a certian amount of essays through out the semester to recieve a certain grade, however you can't turn them in until they have gone through serveral tutorials and she signs them off. Well this makes it difficult to turn your essay quota in if she doesn't approve them early enough. It was very difficult.
I hope to be an english major so I appreciated the difficulty of this class. Dr. Kort is a very interesting women and really a good teacher. However if you plan on taking a class from her hoping to get an easy A or just need credits for transfer FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
TERRIBLE. She has you turn in 5 essays to get a C or 6 to get an A or B but you MUST have them ok by her before making it almost impossible because time runs out!!! I would NOT recommend taking her class. Especially if you need this class to transfer out its nothing but stress that you DONT need
I earned a "C" because I only turned in five essays. But that was my fault--not Dr. Kort's. She will eventually "ok" the essays shown for tutorials--as long as one is persistent. I loved the class, and my writing improved, which is what counts. Students were able to visit after her "official" office hours. So don't be scared--she's fabulous!
Worst English teacher i have ever had. Every time Melissa reviewed my paper she asked me to change things even if she had already told me that part was perfect prior to that evaluation. She will not let up even when a medical emergency arises in a class session. Imagine having 4 paramedics working next to you while you are timed on a 5 page paper.
Boring and rude. Jumps to conclusions and cuts you off frequently. When she revises your paper she will re-correct paragraphs that you have already corrected with her with new material. The amount of time it takes to get a paper approved is near impossible. She says she grades her students as if they are going to UC Berkeley.
I highly suggest looking for another English teacher. While she may be able to help you improve your writing at times, it can be vague, mean-spirited, and not very constructive. Outside of her tutorials (evaluation of essays) the class is very boring, her voice can strain, and she is unnecessarily critical. Avoid.
Leave your opinions at the door. If you think one way about a book, let her giver her opinion first so you can just agree with her. Essays were supposed to be based on your opinions with text to back it up but expect two letter grades down if she doesn't like your opinion. She has a fit if you say "awesome." And she throws politics around, why?
She is very thorough about making sure your reading the material. Quizes are every class period 90% of the time, so it is important that you attend. When it comes to her Essays, she explains them but not in a way where i was able to fully understand what she wanted the Essay to look like. I highly recommend that you attend Office hrs.
She is not helpful at all. Her class is not structured well. She says to write about what you want to in your essays, however if she is not in favor of your opinion she will grade you lower. I do not reccomend taking her class
Honestly one of the worst classes I've ever taken. She seems to go out of her way to make the class unnecessarily difficult, especially for a required class such as English 1A. She is impossible to get in contact with. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is self centered and outwardly rude. 10 students are left from a once full class. about 4 will pass.
She seems to understand on a personal level but, does not follow up with what she says she is going to do. she is VERY difficult to please... TAKE A DIFFERENT CLASS...... The majority of the class currently is FAILING.... Because Our opinions and thoughts dont matter. we are not encouraged to think for ourselves.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! This class is an absurd amount of work and it is virtually impossible to get an A. If anything comes up in your life she will not be understanding. Over half of my class has dropped it. Do yourself a favor and take a different professor.
I suggest that you don't take this class. It is impossible to pass. She is one of the hardest teachers to communicate with, and when getting help all you recieve is negitive feedback. If you are just starting out at the JC steer clear!!!!

The course material was very interesting. Kort was knowledgeable. However, she was also painfully arrogant and constantly sarcastic. Any ideas contrary to her own were shut down. This class could have been a great experience with a different instructor. She made my favorite subject a chore for the first time in my life.
There was one or two A's in my class and I was one. The funny things is she tells you exactly how to do well in the class. You have to start from day one. I like her because she doesn't put up with a below average work ethic. She says stuff straight up to students and I just laugh. She knows what she is talking about and your writing will improve!
I took this class Thinking that it would be fun. It was all about her son or her religious traditions. We had to write 4 good essays for a b and she had to approve them. She had to lije your story in order tp approve. I spent hours in the writing lab and wrote 4 essasys and got a d. Do not take her!
My brother and I took her class at Los Angeles Mission College. We still talk about her - she is the Standard by which we judge all teachers. We had never before met such an informed a literate Lady.
She has good information, but is a VERY unfair grader, and everyone I know who has taken her, even English Majors, have barely passed her class.

She's tough, yes, but fair, (and offers ec). But it is very do-able to get an A. All she really wants to see is that you do your reading. (So use plenty of PRIMARY sources in your essays!) I definitely recommend going to her office once before each essay to run an idea by her. I learned a lot and she definitely grew on me as the semester passed.
Just a miserable experience. I absolutely would not recommend her to anyone. It's not so much a learning experience with her as much as it is an opportunity for Kort to show she's smart and we're not. Teaching is plainly not something she is suited for.
If students wouldn't take "easy A" teachers before getting to Kort, her class wouldn't be such a "shock." (You don't know how to do MLA? Huh?) It's really not that hard to get a good grade from her--if you do the work. "A's" from other English teachers don't really mean much. That is why most students love those teachers. Hey, it's your education.
Class was extremely difficult because she requires that she reviews your essay before turning it in, and she can send it back as many times as she wants before you can turn it in.

Dr. Kort is hardcore. Our reading assignments weren't only education but also eye-opening. I took this class at the same time than pre-calculus trigonometry, and I'm proud that all my hard work resulted in a B. I've only wish that I had manage my time better, because Dr. Kort offers to help her students with her papers during her office hours.

If she's the only choice this semester, TAKE IT W SOMEBODY ELSE THE FOLLOWING ONE. Had her 3 yrs ago. I'm a lot more focus in school now, and I'd still not take her class today. Not bc I'd not get an A this time around, but bc I've been taken classes much harder than hers, and I still LOVE those teachers. She shouldn't be teaching at the JC.
On the fourth day of class she asks us for an opinion on an assignment and I let her know that I personally thought it was pointless, and that there's better things for me to do. She responded with "GET OVER IT! THIS IS WHAT I REQUIRE FOR MY CLASS" then left the class for a doctor appointment. Totally unprofessional, and definitely lost my respect
This class was challenging but it's possible to succeed in this class. English is my strongest subject but this class really did put to test my reading and writing skills. I received a B which I was happy with since this class was difficult. I recommend this class for people who enjoy reading works of literature and writing arguement papers.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had the displeasure of having a class with. It's all about her in the class. Loves to hear herself talk. Thinks she's better than everyone because of how she wrote a dissertation on Pride & Prejudice. You won't hear the end of it. If you write your essays and she doesn't like you or the topic, she'll fail you.
I took ENGL1A with Dr. Kort in 2008. It was the most difficult class I took at SRJC, and it made me a far better writer. She was sincerely invested in my success. I'm a law student now, and I still think about lessons I learned in this class. Take this class if you want to be a clear writer and you are willing to work hard to achieve that.
She uses the class room to talk more of her political opinions rather than to teach the class. It was week after week about how our current president is a liar when the focus should be on our comprehensive abilities to distinguish fact from fiction. Also be prepared to be talked to than have open discussions because she enjoys hearing her own voice
She's the right teacher for students who are eager to learn and are willing to have their ideas challenged. You have to work for the grade you want. Show effort and she'll notice. Don't be lazy.
