She is a great teahcer. She is very nice and her lectures are interesting. I hate history but this class was not bad at all! It is and Easy A if you take good notes and study. Her test are through, but it's worth it b/c she is sooo nice.
One of the best professors I've had so far. She explains everyhing in a way you can understand it and makes history interesting. If you take notes and study then you will pass. She only has 3 exams though, so they each cover a lot of material but the final is not cumulative.
very nice, lectures cover test material, you have to read a lot, 1 book for a quiz, but go to class and take good notes and use review sheets to study and u will do good
She is nice, but too much work, expects you to go in depth with everything on a test, good isnt good enough.
SHE IS AN AWESOME TEACHER!! SHE WILL HELP YOU WITH ANY QUESTIONS AND IS ALWAYS VERY FRIENDLY. IF YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES AND READ THE BOOKS THEN U WILL HAVE NO TROUBLE IN THE CLASS. I WOULD TAKE HER CLASS AGAIN
She is an excellent professor and is SUPER nice and helpful. She explains everything in depth and made history so intriguing for me. If you go to class and take good notes, you will be fine on the exams. I would take her again in a heartbeat!!
her lectures are organized, her tests are from the lectures, there is one paper. she is relatively easy if you write everything you possibly can and go to class...don't bother reading the book, it's not on the tests.
She was a very good teacher! She made History so much fun. As long as you take good notes, you won't even have to look in the textbook for the tests. She gives in depth lectures. Just read the assigned readings and take good notes and you can make an A.
Terrific prof. Knows her stuff, is passionate about it and communicates the material well. Provides lots of study sheets to help you understand the material fully. Not hard to make an A, but it did take a lot of work. She is a stickler for details on quizzes and exams- know everything!
Very good teacher. Its less like going to history class and more like going to story time. If you are going to be absent, simply read the text on the days you missed and take notes and you should be fine on the exams. But beware, she wants the details and the broader generalizations as well, so take good notes on what she says in class.
She is a great Professor she definetly knows what she is talking about. She talks with lots of enthusiasm so it doesn't bore you half to death. The Tests and Quizes are not easy but if you have payed attention in class theres no problem. She is the best professor ive had.
I think that she is extremely educated and loves to explain things so that every student in her classroom understands. I recommend her to anyone!
She's a great teacher and very into making class fun. She's always giddy and will always explain herself if you don't understand. I would recommend her to anyone. I love her class and I am a Bio major!
I cannot stress enough how much of an amazing teacher this woman is! I really enjoyed this class, and it was all because of her! She brings history alive and makes it almost fun. However, she pays special attention to detail on exams, so know your stuff. But I definitely recommend her for Core.
She was very helpful with any questions. She explains things very clearly and if you take good notes and study, the test should be manageable. I got an A in this class. She meakes the topic interesting. By far one of the best teachers I've had
I have to say that most of what was taught in her class was propoganda. I will never forget the lecture on imperialism, in which she almost broke down in tears b/c we Americans are so awful. She also did not like seeing viewpoints that opposed hers and other liberal professors in our papers. She would make a fine match for Ward Churchill.
The lady knows her stuff but is very biased. She is teaching a history class but its more like English. She insists we are studying history but what does "name some themes occurring in..." sound like to you? She will allow you to disagree with her but will not you give maximum credit. She grades very subjectively.
She requires to much for a 1000 level class. Hello, that means it is a freshman class. You also better be ready to write every word this women says. Her grading is really subjective. Don't buy the textbook because it is a waste. Attendance counts so you better be there everyday as well. I got an A+, but the class was a pain in the ass.
Professor Matthews is such a spunky lady! She makes class so much fun; you really learn and remember what she teaches you. Take her for Core II!
just because it's a freshman class doesn't mean it's easy. All core teachers have to teach a lot of material in a short amount of time, and Matthews did a great job. It was interesting and not difficult if you paid attention. just don't try to cram it all in the last minute. and i didn't use the text so don't buy it
Prof. Matthews pretty much tells an amazing story when she teaches, and makes you want to learn. She's very energetic and knows and engages in her students as important people. One class that I've absolutely learned the most in, and it's essential stuff...oh yeah, and she loves Disney. muahaha
She was an excellant teacher. The material is kinda hard but that how the course is designed. Theres a lot of material to cover and she does a good job at it. Fair grader and really cares about her students. She knows all her students by name and wants them to do well. Very knowlegable and always willing to help.
I learned more in this class than I've learned in any other college course. She is entertaining and I never once dreaded attending class, which is imperative in order to keep up. She's full of energy and holds a strong dedication to her job as a teacher. She teaches a story you'll never forget, and makes you WORK for a good grade!
Overall great teacher. She takes attendance, is very enthusiastic about the subject matter, and will bend over backwards to help you understand it. This class is not by any means 'easy'. You must take organized notes, read books assigned, and be able to write well in this class. She is very picky about short essays.
She is an awsome teacher, and will try her best to help you understand or accomodate you. I honestly loved this class! She made it all so interesting and easy to understand. She has essay tests but if you reveiw the sheet she gives you youll be fine. She tells the history subject matter almost like a story so she is very easy to follow. love!
She is great! Extreemly helpful both in class and at her office. She is very willing to help and is generous with grading policies. Do the reading for the quizes and take notes for the tests which are all written, never multiple choice.
She was very excited about history, specifically the renaissance. She was willing to let you make up quizes with a valid excuse and very helpful both inside and outside of the classroom. Very giggly tho.
Very accomadating and good teacher. The class itself is challenging, and she does take attendance every class. She is easy on the eyes as well.
Professor Matthews is a great teacher. I'm not too good at history, so I'd struggle in this class either way. She knows what she is talking about. Her powerpoints are brief, so prepared to take good notes! I'd suggest bringing a computer or a recorder. She is extremely nice and helpful at office hours! Take her if you can. Tests are semi difficult.
She's awesome, she loves the subject and teaches like she's telling a story and was there. Just study for tests! Highly recommend this class.
"I learned more in this class than I've learned in any other college course. She is entertaining and I never once dreaded attending class, which is imperative in order to keep up. She's full of energy and holds a strong dedication to her job as a teacher. She teaches a story you'll never forget, and makes you WORK for a good grade!" - Exactly!!!
She super hot for a mother of two. but she keeps you intrested, which thank jesus cuz you take like pages of notes. but as long as u know the material your good to go. man shes sexy
Professor Matthews was awesome. Her lectures are very interesting and captivating. There is a lot of reading, but this is college; it needs to be challenging if you want to learn. I would recommend her to anyone that needs this class.
Took her in 2006 and I haven't had a better teacher since. She is a super hottie which makes it so easy to listen to stuff you don't even care about. Take her if you can!! Amazing teacher!!
Prof. Matthews is awesome. Really cares about what she teaches and her students. although attendance is mandatory i never dreaded having to come. Not an "easy a" but deff. a professor worth taking!
She is a great teacher!! She loves doing what she is doing and really understands what she is teaching which makes it much easier to learn. Take her if you can!!
Matthews is a really great teacher. She knows her stuff and she is very willing to help you if you need it. Without her breakout sessions I don't think I would have passed Core 2.
Prof. Matthews is a great professor. She knows her stuff and LOVES it! She gets really into her leactures which makes it so you get really excited about what she is teaching. BEWARE She goes very quickly, USE A TAPE RECORDER (if registered with DRC get note taker!!) She is always willing to help. DO THE BIG PICTURE TOPICS! HELPS WITH EXAMS ALOT!!!!
Wonderful teacher!! Go to class, read the books, and study and you will do fine!
Wonderful teacher! I am horrible at remembering history but she teaches it like a story & makes it very interesting because she's passionate about it. Tests include a lot of material but she teaches it in an organized and easy way to remember. Books follow what she teaches and are interesting. I learned A LOT. I highly recommend her.
She is a bit like a middle school teacher, she lets you eat in the class, there are only written exams, but she gives you a print out of what the exams will be on
Melissa Matthews is a good teacher. However, I think her exams are too demanding. You pretty much need to know the entire world every exam memorizing dates, names, specifics, etc. It is too much to cover and just half of it is in the exam (which are all essay questions). You memorize tons that you dont even need. I was overwhelmed.
very serious about attendance. if you aren't into history i wouldn't recommend this class. i was required to take it but it was very challenging and all the exams are written. there's also a paper due at the end of the semester and like 3 additional books and online readings. alot of work for someone whose major has nothing to do with history.
HORRIBLE CLASS. This is a gen ed class and it is ridiculous how demanding she is. Lectures are boring and she sometimes goes overtime, she never stops talking. Be prepared for a lot of work and tough grading. We have 3 online quizzes that are hard and essays are all written and literally expects you to know EVERYTHING. She is HORRIBLE DONT TAKE HER
Great professor! Really enjoys teaching. Attendance is mandatory because of notes, if you attend every class you get extra credit at end of semester. Studying isn't mandatory if you pay attention in class. Offers a boat load of extra credit! Assignments aren't that demanding.
Nice Teacher, knows what she is talking about but IMPOSSIBLE GRADER! Her midterm and finally are graded way too harsh. I studied for hours and knew material but still would end up with C's on her exams. Almost impossible to get an A in the class.
If you're looking for something to coast through this isn't it. She grades fairly and let's you know what is expected of you. Through more taking is required, those who didn't take notes were the only ones who got bad grades. She is extremely helpful and allows many chances for extra credit. It of all the woh profs she is the best
I took Honors and I have to say she is THE BEST! I never loved world history until I took her class. I forgot most of the time that I was attending a lecture! I stressed out with tests and papers but it's not really that bad unless you give a good amount of time to the class.
I LOVED this class! It is by no means an easy A and is a lot of reading, but she makes the content very interesting. Highly recommend!
Im currently taking this class online & it honestly seems like she doesn't know what the heck she's doing. She never responds to her emails as all the students are confused about several technical issues, as well as horrendous clarity about what she wants for her assignments. I bet she isnt a bad teacher in person, but online shes straight up awful
I chose to take Matthews because everyone on here had great things to say, maybe she is a good professor in person, however her online is impossible. I'm a senior and I have never had a course load this heavy, thanks to a freshman class. I know its a pain, but don't do online, you'll regret it.
The Online is absolutely ridiculous. I'm a Junior and I have never had so much work. I physically do not have the time to read readprepare as much as she is asking. You are expected to remember every name and date that you come across . After reading the reviews I'm assuming that there is a discrepancy between her in-class teachings and online.
Taking this class online is horrible. Incredible amount of work and tests are beyond difficult for what should be a freshman class. She requires you pay $10 per exam for a remote proctor (yes that's right, you use an application that monitors audio, video, and your computer desktop for cheating. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE ONLINE.
Out of all the classes i have taken at UNF, this one was the absolute worst. For a freshmen class the workload is ridiculous. You have to pay just to take each exam with a remote proctor, which only makes you more stressed than actually taking the exam itself because of the feeling of being watched. The exams are essay questions, no multiple choice
DO NOT TAKE. Had her online, more effort than my 4000 level course. Way too much work and you have to pay $10 EACH for all three tests so they can monitor (Sound, video and voice) you while doing it. Not pleasant through email either seemed like you were bothering her. Would not recommend. Pick another WOH class. For your sake.
I had Prof Matthews for online world history 2 and I, although usually hate history, this class was pretty easy for me. All you have to do is listen to her lectures she posts on bb every week in her modules. There's discussions, a few quizzes and 3 tests. It's a pretty easy class. I never wrote much for the essays on the test and ended up with b's
Her lectures are very clear and interesting. If you attend class and pay attention to the lectures and take good notes, you shouldn't have a problem in this class. Tests are on lecture material rather than textbook material, so attending class is important.
literally the worst. I love history. and she was so nit picking in her work. took off a point because i didn't give a date. and that was out of a 5 point question. Don't take her.
I enjoyed professor Matthews. There is a lot of reading in this class but it is all beneficial towards the understanding of the subject matter. Discussion boards, m/c quizes, 3 exams, final paper, not a difficult class. I took her online where you will view powerpoint lectures, interesting material if you like American History. BOO proctored exams.
The usual, but somewhat easy class.
Do not take this class. She takes months to grade exams and quizzes. Exams are proctored, and cost $5 if you forget to make an appointment. Not a good professor!
I would NOT take this class online. The professor is ridiculously hard. I took it along with my final major courses and this required more work than my 4000 level class. I ended up withdrawing from the course.
I took this class online for my last Gen Ed. credit and I would suggest taking it either on campus or with a different professor. Tests way heavily and are proctored, which is stressful and time consuming. Rarely any positive feedback, and is a tough grader.
Don't bother taking this course with this professor! I never leave reviews but I feel the need to warn everyone that this course will be the death of you. I am a straight A student and I just barely received a B from this professor and her unrealistic grading criteria. Exams are in essay format and proctored live FYI and GRADED HARSHLY!!!
I took this course online for Summer A semester. Much of the instruction for the assignments were unclear and/or wrong (she had a syllabus from a different course that she taught). Whenever I messaged her with a question about an assignment it would regularly take her several days to respond. Her grading is severe with little to no feedback.
I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone. She changed the value of the grades halfway through the semester, & made all of her assignments (with the exception of tests) valued at 1 point each. All tests are essay questions/ who, what, when, where and why questions. The assignments are easy, but they mean nothing if you aren't a good test taker
She takes 3-5 days to answer emails. She takes up to a month to grade exams and quizzes and gives no feedback whatsoever. Her exam study guides are useless. I'm a history major (and history nerd) and I did fine. But for anyone taking this course that doesn't have a passion for history: I highly suggest you avoid taking her class at all costs.
She is complete garbage. She does not teach what is on her tests and she does not teach in a way that is helpful to her students. She does not teach anything right and I had her 2 years in a row.
the first year i had her i was optimistic and it went well . second year goes zero to sixty homework is more and harder. and if you have the skill to understand what shes saying what the test will be on is nothing from what she says
She gives you terms to look for in the lecture, and states they'll be on the exam. Once she reaches the terms, she will often skip over them, making me google them. Also if she does cover the term, she takes a long confusing route to explaining them. Not to mention her lack of understanding context and your situation, and unnecessary rudeness.
If Melissa Matthews had to drive from Jacksonville to Orlando, she would first drive to New York. She loves to take confusing routes that makes no sense, and sometimes never even gets to the point. She would have FDR on the slide, but then talk about Soviet Russia the whole time and have no mention of FDR or what you're supposed to write down.
She HAS no emai) éDiqiit at ALL. Very hard grading and not very helpful when you have any questions with the online course. She ridicules wrong answers instead of using constructive criticism. You will have to memorize the book to get an A.
Major exams use Examity, which is EVIL. Loads of reading, textbook plus extra readings and posted excerpts. Not much feedback, on discussion boards the students critique each other.
Worst professor at UNF. Never accessible via email. Adjunct professor who teaches high school. Acts like class is a doctorate level class. Essays from material straight from the book info is counted as wrong. I am not sure where her information is coming from. Dont take.
Prof. Matthews was an extremely rude. Asking a question about a quiz date, she snapped and I was very offended.
The discussion post, Chapter Quizzes are the only thing that's the easiest about the class . The exams and PS Quizzes are the hardest, because you have to write The five W's and H and make sure your writings are on par with what she wants! Also your Exams are on Examity and it has people watching you take the exam to ensure that your not cheating
Very hard course load.
The final and midterm is work 60 percent of your grade. Then she took 2 weeks to grade all assignments. She is horrible with communication at one point i waited 2weeks for a email back. She told is rude. When you ask for help she would say you should already know how to do this and look back in the book. Overall the worst professor i ever had.
So rude. Emailed her asking a few quick questions and she snapped. It was an online class so obviously emailing is practically the only way to communicate. On multiple occasions, she gave me one-word responses after I sent her a whole paragraph.
Every assignment for her class was 1 point and she made tests worth 50 points. She does give you a study guide but it does not help you at all for the midterm and finals. The tests are also proctored which makes you nervous about it being flagged for simple things like looking away for one second. I would not recommend taking this class online.
Took this class to fill a requirement. The reading is way too much, as well as additional material included. Tough grader, and every couple of weeks there is a huge exam on honorlock. It could have any questions from 4 chapters and it needed to be memorized exactly how she wants it. Took it online, maybe would have been better in person?
The lectures are not concise at all. You have to put a lot of work into this class every week. Tests are closed notes, written answer, and use honorlock. Feedback is terrible. I got an 88% on an exam and all she noted was "Not sure why you underlined some of your answer. Don't do that next time."
The worst history class I've taken. It honestly seemed like it was a class for a History major. She is super strict on your test/quiz essay responses. Her feedback looks like a huge list that was copy and pasted. On tests, she expects you to memorize more than 50 terms and wants you to write an essay on 4 terms that are perfectly described.
Professor is kind of rude, and not very lenient when it comes to late or missing work, so make sure your assignments are on time for this class. assignment and grading sucks, so many tests and tedious assignments especially for an online class that has nothing to do with my major.
It's recommended to only take her if you're a history major or if history is one of your stronger subjects. A lot of reading, very rigid weekly quiz, discussion, and exam schedule. Be ready to interpret what you've learned through writing essays. However, she's very clear in communicating what's due each week and doesn't throw in any extra work.
Requires TWO TEXTBOOKS. Two. Never had a course in my entire life require two textbooks. Especially for a gen ed class. 99% of this course is reading. Her lectures on youtube are extremely long and you barely hear what she is saying. I highly recommend finding a different professor for US history. She also takes a long time to grade tests.
Do be aware that there are 2 mandatory textbooks, and she will quiz you on them multiple times throughout the semester. Also, Honorlock was required for all quizzes and tests. I found the workload to be pretty fair with a discussion board and quiz due every week. She does have a few quizzes/tests that are timed essays, but I didn't have trouble.
