lots of homework.
A very good, but very hard teacher. Is very helpful and passionate about English but grades tough. If you want to slide by don't take this class, only for those fully prepared to commit themselves to the work.
so boring!
she doesn't help you at all!! she expects you to know everything, I don't recommend her! she does not explain the topics, she just wants you to do every essay perfectly without even explaining how.
the readings were very different from other english classes taken. she gave a lot of feedback on writing and i feel that i improved my writing skills. i thought the class was interesting and not so boring...
She is a very good teacher. I learned alot in her class and we had some great discussions. She is a relatively difficult grader but I improved as the semerster went on. she is extremely unforgiving when it comes absences and late work no matter the circumastances
I Loved her class, such intelligent insight and subject matter. She is very quick and smart and has a great sense of humor that really makes the class intresting. My favorite english teacher at the city college!
Shes real chill. I personally didn't like the material she taught so much but I ended up liking the class a lot. She is very nice and interested in her work.
She is super nice and easy going. I learned a lot while being in her class and she seems to really care about her students.
Very thought provoking class. She grades fairly. On the first day I was really worried that the class would be too hard for me, but I worked hard and finished with an A. Take Her!
she is so sweet! take this class you will love it! it is not hard either
Bad teacher! Is not helpful whatsoever, has an overall good attitude but expects students to perform to her standards without giving them! I normally love english class, but this teacher is clearly trying to prove herself and is doing poorly at it. if you have another option, take it!
Very kind and intelligent person, could be a better professor. If you have taken AP LIT, ENG 111 is all review. I felt sometimes she graded unfairly, easy on some, hard on others who had more potential. We read a lot of interesting pieces though, i liked that it was an MET class, it was refreshing.
Bad teacher! She acts as though she has something to prove and her grading shows that. She has clear favorites in the class and is not helpful whatsoever. I normally love english classes but she made this one miserable. If you have another option, take it. if not, try to suck up... she favors guys over girls
Very nice person that's passionate about american literature but she grades extremely hard. The pieces you have to read before each class are extremely in depth and lengthy, and the class is basically her opinions. Felt like a history class at some points. Just don't take this class, it's insanely time consuming and you'll regret it.
Professor Menendez is NOT helpful. I really tried in her class but it was never enough. She is a SUPER hard grader and do not expect to her an A on your essays. We have long homework assignments every class and we also have to work on 2 essays at once. And if you do not understand she looks down upon you and has a snide attitude.
I'm usually a 4.0 student and got a B. I started this class as an enthusiastic and passionate english major...I left it a different major. The pieces you have to read are very time consuming, her standards and expectations are high and not clearly stated once throughout the class. Just don't take her. She's nice, but I heard british lit is way bett
Nice teacher, but be preapred to do all of the work. I did everything for an A, but still got a B. She is helpful and nice, but even one absence will hurt you and grades essays hard. good teacher, but have heard easier 111 classes

Very difficult, a horrible teacher never takes any time to explain what is expected don't be suprized if you fail first paper. Take another teacher!
Awful!! Find another class to take!
She is a terrible teacher. The reading she assigns is extensive, but interesting. In high school I was an A- student consistently in almost all my English courses and no matter how much effort I put into her assignments, she will grade me a full letter grade lower than I deserve. She is the worst teacher I've had at SBCC by far!!
Terrible teacher, specially if you r a girl. She has her favorites. She is not clear, not willing to explain or help. She feels she knows everything, take another teacher, she is horrible. I did not learn anything from her or her class.
SHE IS VERY NICE AND LIKES GOOD JOBS. GIRLS ARE SENSITIVES WHILE MEN DON'T CARE IF SHE'S HONEST TO ASK YOU REWRITE A PAPER
I love Dr. Menendez! I had her for eng 110 and I LOVED going to her class! everytime we had a paper due I would go in and have her check it out and give her feedback and she was so helpful! the research paper that we did at the end of the sem had the same protocol. i think she is a great teacher, cant wait to have her for American lit!
She tough, but she def. wants her students prepared from college writing classes. I loved going to her classes, she expects a lot, but gives back a lot to the students who are taking the class seriously. I can't say anything bad about her because she is what got me to write "A" papers for Eng 110/111.
i've read other comments and yes she is a tough grader but she is helpful if you see her during office hours. The readings make you think and it seems like that's what she is looking for...people to think! If you want to learn something take her...if not then don't.
She's rude, condescending, and an unnecessarily harsh grader. She cares more about your MLA format than what you actually write. Not only that, but she hasn't taught us a single thing this semester. All she does is group us together and do peer review, which is not helpful to say the least. I generally love English, but now, I dread every class.
Shes a good teacher if you stay on her good side. Pay attention and pretend that you care about what she is teaching. You will be assigned many essays and logs at the same time so dont procrastinate. Pretty difficult
She is a terrible teacher. She grades harshly and cares more about how you cite your sources than how well you write. She has your classmates review your papers which is no help at all, she doesn't help anyone but her favorites and everyone else is is left in the cold. Overall, I regret taking this class. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH HER!
like the other comments say, shes VERY hard. worked on essays for days but barely managed to get a passing grade if she was nice, but would give failing grades for minor errors. The essay length requirements are extremely long &i was extremely disappointed after taking her class.
She's a very nice woman with a lot to say, but she grades EXTREMELY difficultly. If you are not willing to go to every class and put your BEST effort forth in your essays and journal entries then do not take this class. I worked my ass off, and pulled through with a B.
Melissa is a nice teacher and excelent person
I love to Melissa, she's amazing as a teacher and as a person
She is an extremely smart teacher and a very fair grader. The grade you get on your paper reflects how much time and effort you put into it. She can tell the difference between the people who half ass everything and the people who actually put in the time and effort for a good grade. She's not the easiest teacher because she grades fair...Go figure
Great professor and extremely smart. If you actually put in the time and effort you will be awarded appropriately :)
Extremely smart teacher who knows what she's doing. She is a very fair grader and if you actually put the time and effort in she will award you the right grade. However, she knows the difference between those of you who half ass everything and those who don't, so don't be surprised if you get a bad grade because you didnt put in the time and effort
She is a hard teacher, so be prepared to dedicate a lot of your time to her class. I spent many hours on her essays/research papers and I usually got 'B's. I found this class challenging, and although the professor is a tough grader, she was quite helpful and nice. Just remember, you must be devoted.
Great teacher who knows what she is doing and really wants to get all of her students to a college level of writing. If you don't care about improving your writing then don't take english with her. If you are willing to work hard and put in a lot of time and effort like I did tho to truly improve your writing, you will be awarded with an A like me
Menendez' classes require a lot of effor. I took her for ENG 110/120 as well as for ENG 111. Absences hurt your grade a lot, and she doesn't accept late work, no excuses. She is thorough and clear, and also extremely helpful, but you've got to be willing to go to her for help!! She is passionate, and overall a wonderful person, but def. not easy!!
She tries really hard, but she doesn't really know literature very well. Probably no worse than the average sbcc english teacher?
Professor Menendez is a really nice lady. She is willing to help if you talk with her. Really easy class. I enjoyed it. I go to UCSB, but I decided to take this class at SBCC to save some money! Highly recommend her. Take her!
Great teacher willing to help at any time! had 3 papers but if you put some effort into the class they are pretty easy. would highly recommend her class!
professor Menendez is terrible, to say in a nice way. shes HARD, grades very harshly, pays attention to every tiny detail, and doesnt really teach you much. on top of that she HATES student athletes and really isnt open to working with you. if your on her good side, however, shes a completely different teacher.
She is not helpful at all!
Dr. Menendez gave me a tough intro to college. She enforces a zero tolerance attendance policy & dropped me from English 110/120 6 weeks into the term. I missed only 1 lecture, but she also counted a Moodle discussion as TWO absences, and dropped me for doing the wrong online quiz. Her grading is very harsh and emphasizes form over substance.
Terrible teacher. Very tough grader, and DOESN'T reply to your emails when you need help. Material is very boring, and she gives terrible essay topics. I have A's in all other classes, except this one. She expects her students to know how to do everything without direction.
She is a HORRIBLE teacher. She gives little to no explanation with assignments and then grades students extremely harsh. Her grading comments are unclear and when I've asked for extra help or explanation about my grade she gives me basically no response. Don't try to contact her by email, she won't reply.
One of the worst teacher that I have ever had. She doesn't care about her students at all!!
Professor Menendez was one of the worst teacher I have ever had. She doesn't care about her students at all.
Dr. Menendez is tough but you learn how to write research papers if you stick with the course. If you want easy A don't take her class. If you don't want to attend class don't take her class.
Menedez is a terrible teacher. She plays favorites and doesnt give clear feedback on her unreasonable grades. I wrote an essay on gay rights just to find out a week later that she's against it when she made a rude comment about gays in class. I got the paper back, C-. If you have to take her class then focus on following MLA and hope she likes you
I got a D in her class, the only non-A I've ever gotten in a college writing class. It is insulting and disgusting how subjectively she grades her papers. She didn't give me credit for a project I turned in, and lied straight to the head of the department about it when I contested my grade. She has a superiority complex and should not be teaching.
Worst English teach ever! Every class she has a reading quiz asking questions like what is the climax or discuss the characterization of the main character. The stories she assigns are very boring and are not educational at all. Only assigns four essays but grades them way to difficult. She was very unhelpful and is completely unreasonable.
Professor Menendez is a GOOD teacher. For all of you who are saying that she is too hard and grades against you, you must not write effectively. I took her in the summer, and had homework about everyday. Was it hard? No. The stories were very interesting and the quizzes are easy if you use common sense. Got an A in her class. Gives 5 percent EC!
I just took her in summer and I didn't think there were any favorites in the class. She learns everyone's name by the second class. She expects students to do the work... that may be a hard grader to some but a fair grader to others.
I spent more time on that class then i have ever spent on a class in my life, and i still had a d and dropped out. She grades unreasonably strict in my opinion. When I asked her for help she just told me i should get a tutor. If she was doing her job right, her students shouldn't need a tutor. Thats all.
Prof Menendez has no idea what she is doing. She is extremely rude to those (during discussions) that have opposing opinions to her. She is very critical against essays of those she doesn't like. My class was part online & she always wanted a specific type of answer to the topics we discussed. I did not like her & I DO NOT recommend her. Dont do it
I did not enjoy this teacher one bit! I am sympathetic sometimes when I give reviews but she was plain terrible. She gives off a very friendly vibe, but then when you hand her your assignment, she will find every way not to give you an A on it. Worst english I have had thus far. I do not recommend this individual to anyone. Avoid her at all cost.
Honestly, I really like her. She has a fun personality, smiles and laughs a lot. I have to admit Dr. Menendez is a hard grader, but that encouraged me to be a better writer and I saw myself improve. You can't just expect an easy A. American Lit was difficult compared to English 111, I took over the summer, but I personally liked the readings.
If you don't understand the assignment she won't take the time to explain it to you. I usually love English classes but I felt like I learned nothing this semester and it was clear she simply had no interest in teaching Eng 110 and was incredibly boring. If you want a class with her try American Lit, which seems to be her area of expertise.
She is a nice person, but probably shoud’nt be teaching, as students need direction and as most comments on this site prove, she is not capable of guiding her students to success. I received a D in her course, and when I re-took the course the next semester with a different teacher, I received an A.
If you like pulling all nighters, then getting an F on your paper, go for it
Super nice, but she is a tough grader! Prompts are literally not clear enough to understand. Rarely gives out A's to her students. Wouldn't recommend anyone to take her class
I got a B in this class but really had to work for it. This teacher is not bad as all these reviews say but she will challenge you and help you develop your writing. Take this teacher if you want to be challenged, college isn't supposed to be easy guys.
Menendez was a great professor! I would highly recommend taking this course, yes she is a tough grader, but she truly cares about her students.
Being quite the well-rounded writer in high school with many honors and AP courses, this class was ridiculously hard. Mind you I hired a pro tutor who was a grad student at Duke University and he couldn't believe the reading content for a second year composition course. She really teaches an ethnic studies course rather than english. do not take it
She is a very tough grader, her assignment prompts are not clear. She is very contradictory about what she wants, she doesn't have strict guidelines. When you think you know what she wants, she'll be sure to make sure you get something wrong. I would never recommend this class to anyone. It gave me an unbelievable amount of stress. Don't do it!
avoid this professor
She is the toughest grader I have ever had in my life. She seems like she would be extremely nice in person but when it comes to emails and grading, I don't think she knows what a positive comment is. Her prompts are very unclear. I got an A in English 110 Honors working a quarter as hard as I did in this class. I got a C-. Also don't miss class.
I found her grading very difficult. There were constantly too many pop quizzes and it was confusing to keep track. In the end I dropped out because of the grade I was getting in the class. Overall, she's a good teacher but has high expectations. It was like being in an honors class.I wished that her assignments li were a little easier.
It is a lot of hard work and the grade is never satisfying. She is an extremely hard grader and expects you to go above and beyond for every assignment. I have never worked so hard in a class before and I barely passed. Super nice in person but is brutal when it comes to comments on your work.
She challenges you. I wanted to drop this course after the first essay, but I stuck around and I'm glad I did. Her comments on papers are honest and after revising my first essay, I realized that. Go to her office hours; she will read drafts and help you succeed.
Not much work really, just weekly readings, quizzes and periodic essays. But when it comes times for grades, get ready to see Fs, Ds and Cs. You might get a B if you're extremely lucky. She acts really nice in class, but her instructions are super vague, and her grading, as indicated previously, is unreasonably harsh. Also, LOTS of group work.
I highly recommend taking another English professor. Whether you are looking to improve your writing skills or improve your GPA you won't be able to accomplish that with her. She is not clear with her assignments and is not helpful whatsoever. You can attend office hours and use her notes in an attempt to improve, but you will be unsuccessful.
She is such a great teacher. Everybody is saying that she is hard on students but I do not think so. We need teachers like her to really improve our writing skills. She wants you to succeed and if you show her your motivation, she will help you so much. One of the best teachers I had so far.
Class discussion in groups is fun and helpful but you are not graded for the work you do (besides attendance and participation). On essays she gives vague feedback and isnt clear about what she wants even if you go to office hours. Got Straight As in AP eng and AP lit in high school but this class is completely different and I always felt unprepared
Upon entering Mrs. Menendez's class, her attitude was light, quizzes were easy, essay prompts were straight forward, and I thought the class would be a breeze. Right away, her topic for the class was "sustainability", which seemed very agenda oriented. Come time for grades, I was a little surprised. Her go-to comment was see the tutor, or see me.
Assignments are very unclear and if you ask for clarification or feedback she gives you a vague non-answer and tells you to see the tutor. The amount of reading and writing she expects is just straight up silly as well. I had more work from her 4 units of English than all of my other 12 units combined. On top of that, her lectures are uninformative
Professor Menendez is a great professor! Class discussions were helpful and fun; her class was a lot of work and stressful at times, but she does make you a better writer. I got a C on my first essay and an A on my last. Go to her office hours if you are struggling. She is very helpful
I took Dr. Menendez's class the fall semester of 2016. She is extremely caring, and proactive about getting you the best possible grade she can. If theres anything you need, ASK, she will do her very best to help you understand anything and everything better. I received a B only because I didn't try my best at the beginning of the semester.
she is a crazy social justice warrior.. and she will call you out if you are not. her class is actually an ethnic studies class. also, she is the hardest grader at sbcc, without a doubt. you will pull all nighters for her essays just to get a D. bottom line- steer clear of her class.
A lot of writing and reading to be done in her class, but as long as you can follow the prompt and use quote sandwiches you'll be fine.
avoid this professor very tough grader this class is more of a ethnic studies. assignments are very unclear and ridiculous.
This professor dropped half of the student in the class and is barley passing the rest of the student left. Lots of reading with unclear assignments, lectures in class dont seem to help.
Honestly at first I was intimidated by the class focus being Oppression and Social Justice but actually this turned out to be the most refreshing and relevant class I've taken so far. As long as you read the material you will get 100% on the quizzes each time. Menendez cares bout your development! Only the lazy student complain about this class.
A lot of these people are saying that shes unclear or that its the Liberal Agenda. All English 110 courses use Readings for Diversity and social justice. The essays are hard to fail contrary to what others say. She has a doctorate and uses correct evidence and sources to form her opinions and argue them. You wont get shamed for being a republican.
To earn an A in this class, you have to actually work for it and not expect it to be handed to you. This class is an easy A as long as you do the readings and pay attention, if you're a big procrastinator don't take this. Menendez is amazing and even if you turn something in late, she's very understanding and does her best to make class exciting.
This class has a heavy load of assignments every week so get ready to read! Professor M. is okay (personality wise), no doubt she's intelligent and qualified but she does hold students to a (ridiculous) high standard and is a very tough grader. Make sure to turn everything in on time, and go to the LRC for help and extra credit!
This woman is ridiculous she has extremely difficult reading quizzes and grades harshly, everyone I have talked to is struggling. Take anyone else shes a nice person but unless her class is where youre dedicating the majority of your time, youll get a c.
this should be an ethnic studies class. shes just do group work in class and barely lectures on the topic. you read a lot and write more essays than needed. she has her opinion and if you don't have the same one you'll be judged for it. normally English is a fun subject for me but she made it dreadful
This class was really hard for me. Lots of reading. Only a few essays and interesting projects.
Dr. Menendez was by far one of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of having. She shows genuine concern for her students and is always laughing which brightens up her lectures. She does give A LOT of reading, but when it comes to papers she is very clear on what is expected and gives amazing feedback.
Dr. Menendez is an amazing prof. However, if you don't like English, don't take her class. I'm an English major and her class was a great experience. She gives really good feedback on papers and you only write two. The readings were manageable and interesting and she gives great analysis on them. Super personable and very knowledgeable.
While she was a tough grader, she made it obvious what was expected of you.
Menendez is interesting. She's really nice but I personally did not enjoy her class or the assignments. She can also be unclear on what she wants for assignments and you will have to go to her for clarification. She assigns quizzes every week and lots of reading. Lots of group work as well which I don't mind about the class.
She is an interesting one, not only does she grade so tough, but if you are failing she doesent tell you soon she tells you on the last day to drop out of her class. she is very distracting to watch because she has a weird way of teaching, she looks above the ceiling and wont look at her students. Its so weird and she gives out lots of hw
She takes a while to put grades in which can make it hard to estimate where you're in the class. Lectures revolve around group discussion which is pretty nice.
Doesn't matter if you do all the reading assignments, this teacher definitely plays favorites. Got D's on every assignment I ever turned in, including the 10-12 page essay due during finals week. Wish I dropped this class. Not worth the work, can't say I learned anything, beside how to deal with an awful person.
It is more a social injustice class than English.. She alwas has a really clear vision of what she wants. Unfortunately she is not really clear about it in the beginning. A lot of homework and reading and she is not a big help if its about writing. Would not recommend..
She is an amazing professor, participation + questions will help your grade, has some extra credit, you have some essays(on novels or some topic) and IF YOU READ YOU WILL PASS! You have short articles you read then a quiz on them which is easy. She is very helpful, humorous, and easy to contact with questions. **participation helps!!
I dont recommend taking her. Hard grader with unclear instructions. Feedback is not clear and she does not care about the integrity of your essays. Just make the revisions on the essays even if they do not make sense. Heavily invested in social justice. Nice person, bad teacher.
Mrs. Mendez is awesome! she will make you work and get you engaged. I really enjoyed what we discussed and the assignments we had. The end of the semester gets a bit crazy however she is very realistic and understanding. If you are looking to slack off do not take her, if you want to learn she is the one.
This is my last semester with her, i wish she could be my teacher for every class! She truly is the best and cares about her students. she makes time for you and wants you to pass. you do write essays but the books she chooses are amazing even to someone who hates reading. TAKE HER FOR ENG110&111! go to class and thatll boost ur grade. lots of EC!!
Lots of reading and notes due every class. Not many papers to write, just one group project at the end of the semester. Not difficult material, just takes time and is very centered on social justice. Participating in class discussion will boost your grade. Good class, but the workload is tedious though not hard.
