I like her teaching style. Her instructions and expectations are very clear. She is very helpful and is happy to answer any questions. She wants to help you pass the class. Highly recommended.
Class is not easy, she is nice, though sometimes I think different. She has high standards and helps by giving extra credit when needed. She wants you and the class to pass. There is a lot of work and it is not excepted late.
I must have missed something. Melissa was pregnant while she taught my class and came off as a total wraunch in the first couple weeks. I think I could learn from her teaching style, it seems to be better then most math teachers. Just make sure you have the time to do the work and study the material because she expects a lot
She was not very helpful and the test were very hard. Akmost half of the class failed.
She is a great teacher! I would strongly suggest taking her class!
Yes she is a good teacher, and she is very chill with turning stuff in late. She is very nice, and understands busy college life. We used the mathlab online and it sucked. You could get away with not using the book because it is on mathlab. She gives out a lot of extra credit which is very helpful. If you do your part you will get a good grade.
She's a pretty sweet teacher. If you failed her class then its because you didn't put any effort into it. She gives out tons of extra credit and trys to make herself available after class if you have questions.
Great teacher, very good at helping me to understand the questions, and the questions that I was asking. Made the tough math easy :)
She gives A LOT of homework, but she makes Math fun. She makes sure you know the material.
WAY AWESOME! she wants her students to succeed so she will help you however she can. Assigns a lot of homework but gives you enough time to do it. If you are going to take this class make sure that your group is good and meets often, it will help you get the grade you want.
Very helpful! She explains the subject very well. There's no reason you shouldn't pass this class.
Tons of homework with not enough time to do it in. Taught a lot of the material after home work was due which was way frustrating! I loved her as a person, but for sure thought she could have been a better teacher.
Does not actually teach. Assigns lots of homework using online system that came with the book. Then when it's time for class she breaks us up into groups and has us do problems from the book. "OK class lets seperate into groups and work from the textbook" = lazy teacher. Makes the students teach each other.
Lets everyone teach each other. I felt I needed to be showed how to do the work, rather than get confused by other students trying to figure it out. Has you sign a waiver to become an experiment for her masters degree at BYU.
Super nice lady. Responds really quick to email regarding any sort of concern/question. Goes the extra mile to help students succeed in this class. I really liked her & would recommend her.
She went through the assignments in depth. You do have Lecture notes due every time, but that just makes your quizzes and tests easier. She shows how to work through each Q's on the practice exams. She will even give you the answers to the quizzes, and Lecture notes. The only thing that is hard is that your grade depends on the exams scores.
Don't take this class if you're not into group work. She mainly has you teach yourself and is really only there to somewhat answer questions when you get to class which for me wasn't helpful at all. She tries to make herself extremely available to answer questions outside of class but doesn't do much to teach you during class itself.
I was not very impressed with her. If you take her hybrid class, like I did, you won't even learn anything from her.I would not recommend taking the hybrid class. If you do have questions and apply yourself to the class, she will help you. And she is pretty easy to talk to.
NOT professional(texts students), wastes class time, and flaky. Needless to say I was granted permission by her department to leave her class. I'm sure she's a nice person, just extremely rude to me. If you take this class know that all lectures are online and short. not enough help in class or online. I am thankful I took a stand and left.
Fantastic teacher! She cares IMMENSELY about her students' success & is always willing to answer any questions. I took the hybrid, & though it does require learning the basics of the lesson before class, she does a great job making sure it all makes sense in class as well. So helpful & super friendly. Also provides pre-tests, which is a huge bonus.
I loved her! It's a lot of homework and she pushes you but she wants you to succeed and she makes the test so you can succeed I ended with an A and she helped me immensely I would recommend her to anyone
Great teacher and excellent math class. If you are a responsible student you will soar in her class. She takes the time to put lectures online and then reteaches the harder concepts in class the next day. She was very helpful with questions and I highly recommend her.
Took during a block course as a hybrid class. This tells you a lot of it will be online and self taught. She is great at answering questions and makes sure you know the material. Online done through canvas not required nor is the book. Overall good teacher and helpful.
Melissa was so great! I am NOT good at math but she helped me really understand the material. The homework and study guide was just like the tests so there was no wasted homework time. She gave great feedback and would help work through each question that I got wrong or had trouble with. I took the Hybrid class and loved it.
This was a Hybrid course but also met in class. What you put into it is what you will get out of it. You are expected to do 2 hours of study each day outside of class, this is difficult. The homework is on MyMathLab but you only have to get 80%. She does go out of her way to post extra videos and notes online to help you learn the criteria.
She is a great professor even though the material sometimes was hard to understand if you put the effort she will do anything to help you not only pass but understand the material as well. Don't skip class otherwise you won't pass and the book is not really needed since she post videos.
Melissa is a good teacher. Although her pretests are somewhat similar to the actual exam, you still have to study, unless you are just some Chinese boy pulling her legs, then you won't worry about getting point deductions. Having mistakes while teaching is OK once in a while , but not all the time. She's been corrected by a Math genius.
I won't recommend this class if you're not a Math lover. Hybrid equals almost self-taught. She chastises and embarrasses students who failed to do their Mymathlab. She's allowed to get sick, but you're not, she will dock your attendance points. If you are not her fave, she's a tough grader.
not helpful at all, her teaching is terrible.
She doesn't know what she's talking about. Worst teacher ever, she doesn't teach clearly. Avoid her.
Worst online class experience. Does group projects in an online Math class. Does not explain due dates well, and peaced out half way through the semester. Mymathlab is your bff in this course, as for the instructor offers little to no help. Avoid Melissa Quinn.
If you're up for the challenge of teaching yourself math 1010 then sign on up! She clearly doesn't understand what "online" means and assigns ridiculous group projects for the sake of assigning extra assignments. Gives awful feedback, and doesn't get to questions asked in a timely manner. Do not take math 1010 from Quinn.
She was completely unprepared for the first day of class and acted snippy when called on it. Long delay before returning emails. Mediocre teaching abilities. Mostly just gets frustrated with students who lag behind.
She makes you work for it but no assignment is wasted. She teaches for the test. She gives mymathlab test every week and a review, both of which may seem redundant but my test scores are above 100% because of it. Take instructor quinn if you want to pass. however if you're not ready to put on your grownup pants and do schoolwork then go elsewhere
Hybrid Summer Class. Super fast paced. Professor Quinn was a great teacher. She really cared about the students. Always willing to explain things further when needed. You have to do your work! Lots of homework online. Weekly quizzes on chapters. Final test was difficult but she gives study guides for all quizzes and tests. Textbook is in mymathlab.
Loved her! Math is my most difficult subject. If that's you, her style is great! Load of homework, but she is super helpful and is always willing to explain this further. If you go to class and participate you will do great!
This instructor truly cares about her students if you are lagging behind she sends you a personal email asking you if you are getting everything okay. this motivated me to be better and do my best in the class. math is not my strong point, this was my second time taking this class and she explains everything so clearly. I would highly recommend her
i took this class in block and she made it easy for you to know what to do for a great grade. she truly cares about you learning. put in the effort, do your homework on time along with the quizzes over each section and you will do well on your exams. stay on top of your due dates and talk with her and you can get an A
Math 1050 is a tough class to begin with. Friday only classes were long and most of the learning you did on your own. If you struggle with math take a different format with a different teacher. She is knowledgeable on the subject, but you have got to bust your butt to get an A. Goes through the class at a pace much faster than other teachers.
Used MY Math lab, and expected you to mostly learn outside of class, her idea is good, but if you find it difficult to learn by watching YouTube videos, don't take the class. She is really nice, but I personally found her teaching style added significantly more stress to my life (more than necessary).
Nice gal. Asked if I could come meet with her when I was struggling she said she was part time and to get a tutor. Lectures I find horrible and very fast the way she teaches is 3exposures the first one is watch videos before class then have her go over one question in class then she says if you want to learn then get a tutor. Not very impressed
part time so she has little time, also No office hours, test material is not on reviews. (she says to get material from the quizes that they are the real review) lots of homework. Honestly if you can teach yourself math or want to spend lots on a tutor to teach you then go for it!!! 40 students at begining of semester now there are only 13 coming.
Its pointless to go to class because you literally have to self-teach with all the online homework. Tests are not reflective of reviews and group work. No office hours. On tests, unless you show all of your work entirely, you get the whole problem wrong. When class has been canceled, she gave less than 30 minutes notice beforehand. Not impressed.
I would highly discourage taking Melissa for Math1050. Melissa was disrespectful when students would question her teaching methods or had questions that she had answered previously. You might as well just take math online if you are stuck with her because you will teach yourself 99% of the material. This was by far the worst class I have taken.
I took this class and got a D+ resulting in me needing to retake the class. I took it with another professor and got a B+. I would recommend taking someone other than Quinn unless you intend to do a lot of self teaching. She is a nice lady but doesn't teach much and expects you to learn from watching Youtube videos.
She's really nice I don't blame her for the format of the course because it's a hybrid class (so it's going to be a lot of self teaching), but the amount of time I spent on homework was ridiculous. The frustration of figuring out how to do the homework was unbearable at times. This is college so quit crying and get to work!
Professor Quinn does everything possible to help students pass (late hw can still earn up to a 90%) and you can tell she really cares. Unfortunately the format of the class is hybrid, so it is a lot of frustratingly long homework. The secret is to show up to class everyday and do the hw right after she explains everything: that way you get an A!
This is by far the WORST professor I've ever had. While she didn't come up with the awful hybrid system, she doesn't try to make it any better. She's unhelpful, unprepared, and can be very rude. If you're not strong in math, you'll most likely need a tutor just to pass. This class is all about self-teaching and hours upon hours of work. AVOID.
This was a DIY class. You were expected to complete assignments in ALEKS and print and complete written homework to then take a picture, then upload it as a .pdf, etc. The layout of the class was scattered and confusing. You were also advised to grade your own assignments before she gave your actual grade. I suggest avoiding the online class.
If you want to spend hours on ALEKS teaching yourself how to do the homework then this is the class for you. She does not teach well and gets frustrated when you ask questions. I took the class online and her video lectures were just links to youtube videos other people made. She takes over a week to grade your exams and weeks to respond to emails.
This is not the class to take if you are new to online learning or struggle with math. It is completely self paced and you will have to do a lot of self studying to get the material. However, if you are good at independent study or online learning, this class is great. Midterms are pretty easy if you do the work and show up to the QAs.
Very strict, not a lot of leeway.
Instructor Quinn was very helpful when I reached out for help. Her class was organized and requirements were always clear. That said, exams in this class are TERRIBLE! You have barely any time to do them, and have to upload all your exam notes in only ten minutes! As a result, your grade WILL suffer! I'm a 4.0 student, yet I got a B- in her class.
Instructor Quinn is very caring and will do everything she can to help you pass. That being said, this is a college-level math course, meaning you have to actually put in some effort. Watch the videos, take notes, do the homework, utilize the study resources provided, and you'll be fine. For Proctorio, just follow the rules; it's not that hard.
There is a lot of work in this class but Instructor Quinn offers a lot of ways to help with questions. She has one-on-one time you can sign up for, you can use the math lab, lot of videos and notes given on steps to solve problems as well as a group zoom time to help with questions.
This professor is very strict on grading and when using proctorio.
This class was difficult for me but she goes out of her way to make sure she gives us her time.
She is very nice and very kind as an individual, but I don't see myself taking on that heavy of a workload again.
This class is great for future math classes. Be prepared to be organized and make sure homework, quizzes and tests are turned in on time. The course took awhile to get use to. Youtube videos and practicing problems will be important.
Spring 24, dropped this class due to unrealistic expectations of class work.10+ assignments/wk. Far more than 20 hrs/wk. Mandatory every week to set up a 1:1 meeting with her, meet with a tutor, watch two 25+ min videos & comment on a discussion post (w/ many reqs), or join a zoom meeting (diff time & day every time) + homework & quiz every MWF.
The tests are difficult, and you're not allowed to have any notes to assist you, which seems unfair as it's not "real-life" math. This class is very homework-heavy. The math requires so many steps to solve that I couldn't memorize formulas. Maybe if I didn't have a full-time job and had 40 hours a week to dedicate to this class I could've managed.
I am giving a 2 only bc she is good at feedback. Taking a test in this class is so crazy. She is so strict w/ tests. She watches all proctorio recordings. Announcements have like a million things it's so overwhelming. Math is already so stressful she makes it worse &does not help if you have text anxiety. Save your mental health & avoid this class.
WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst professor EVER. Seems like she will do everything in her power to make you fail. Grades are based solely on the work shown on your scratch paper, and even if you get the right answer, if your work shown doesn't match EXACTLY what she wants word for word she wont give you the points for it.
Melissa Quinn is the worst Professor I have ever had - Do not take her class! She is a terrible teacher with the strictest test taking rules I have ever seen. She goes overboard on proctorio and does everything in her power to make the class as difficult as possible. She will nitpick everything you do. I had 1/3 of my class drop her class.
I have never had a professor this bad. When the median test score on the midterm is a 36% it shows that she is either a terrible professor, or way too strict. In her case, its both. What she teaches/the homework doesn't transfer to the tests and then her grading is absolutely crazy and impossible to get a good score with. Horrible overall.
Seems like this professor gets satisfaction to see her students fail. Will find anything to mark you off on a test. She is the strictest teacher I've ever had. This class has made my mental health go down fr. This has been the worst learning experience in all of my years at college. She grades so hard and has unrealistic expectations. Pls avoid!!!
Melissa Quinn, is not very good at teaching in general. you have to sort through most of what she say to find what she means. she is not accommodating to those of us with learning disability and doesn't give enough information when you ask question. Quinn teaches and write question very different from the test. this is a Full-time job.
I wouldn't recommend.
The course was challenge. It took A LOT of time to understand lots of the topics. The videos were extremely helpful. I would have to use chatgpt to help explain things or youtube. If its a mandatory class for you be prepared to spend a ton of time on this class. The teacher has it setup very well and does respond to you when you need help.
Great for an online math class
It is a tough course but the professor is really understanding and cares for your success, if you reach out she would help you. Due dates are not negotiable, it just takes a lot of time
This was one of my first online classes and I was delighted by how she was. She was very clear at the start of the semester on what grading would look like, get ready to go through. She was very helpful however the subject is a little hard but she is very helpful, just make sure to stay on track otherwise it will be hard to keep up.
She cares a lot about you just hard
I would not recommend it! The exams are very heavily weighted and many extra assignments are unnecessary and do not apply to the material of the course. Her announcements are so overwhelming with many links, videos, and audio recordings. She does not provide useful feedback and grades exams very strictly. Please do not take her class!!
It's 3 days into the semester and I can already tell this class is going to be awful. She had like 5 different assignments just for the intro module and the syllabus grading scheme is extremely test heavy. You could literally ignore all the homework and as long as you do well on the tests you can still come out with an A. Absolutely terrible.
Very hard grader. I had two different tutors during the semester that said they had never seen such hard and questions given in a MATH 1050 class before. Would not recommend.
Get ready to spend hours of your day on homework. If you're taking it online she still requires a weekly participation grade like joining a livestream, going to the school in person and getting a tutor/go to math lab, or form a study group with classmates and study for 30 minutes together. It's literally fully online and she requires participation.
This was the WORST experience I've ever had with a professor. I've had some bad professors, but didn't know it could get this bad. Genuinely frustrating the entire semester. SO many hours of homework, SO many assignments, tests are extremely heavy on your grade. Miserable experience! If you want to be happy, don't take this class.
By far one of the worst classes I have taken. I spend about 15+ hours a week on HW and it only is 10% of your grade. You personally have to spend so much time to educate yourself because you cannot rely on the material she gives you. Material doesn't help as much for your tests either. Just get another math teacher unless if you don't have a job.
Oh my, this teacher did not help me at all. She does not communicate or respond. Not only that, but I came to her with problems and she quite literally did not hear me. She went on a rant about something I wasn't even talking about without doing ANYTHING. She is not ever present and 100% does not care. DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS TANKING MY GRADES!!!!!
This professor is very nice and she is helpful when I had questions about my homework and quizzes. However, she gives tons of homework and theres a test every single week usually. But that being said, she did have meetings once a week that were super helpful when I was struggling (which was a lot of the time).
I am finishing this class so mentally exhausted. I have never had such a large workload for ONE class before. She does provide lots of helpful resources, which i will give her credit for that. But you will not be able to take a break from this class. EXTREMELY test heavy. If you don't test well, good luck passing this class.
This class is well organized. There's A LOT of homework and quizzes, but they count for a small part of the grade mainly they help prepare for the midterms and final, which carry more weight. The instructor also provides useful resources such as live lectures and meetings that are flexible and catered toward improving comprehension.
Instructor Quinn is truly caring and knowledgeable. She can be a little disorganized but if you take initiative in your own learning and reach out she will bend over backward to help you learn the material!! The summer course is intense but that's to be expected. Test heavy like all math classes, but the assignments will prepare you very well!
The class was as to be expected. It was difficult, but keeping on top of the homework assigned everyday was helpful. Often the teacher would have Q&A Review Recordings before the quizzes, which often covered problems most students have had on the quizzes in the past.
Professor Quinn was great! You could tell she had a love for teaching and she really cared about her students. The material is quite difficult you do have to put a lot of time in. Her test are a huge chunk of your grade, make sure you complete the reviews so you are prepared. Professor Quinn makes sure you have resources to help you succeed.
