The best professor I've ever had.
Great professor. She is super funny and makes the class laugh every class. The way she tells the stories are really fun to listen to so you don't fall asleep. Tests not exactly easy but doable if you study. Everyone did better 2nd midterm.
Prof Stem makes the class very enjoyable. Very animated in telling the stories. Midterm and Final are all multiple choice. Memorize the lecture slides and you'll be fine. Recommended!
She was extremely enthusiastic about the subject which made it not hard to be completely engaged into what she was saying. There are 3 exams in the class. Overall, this class was amazing and enjoyed it completely.
She was a very enthusiastic professor and made the lectures extremely interesting and funny. The material was super interesting although it could be hard to keep all the names straight since they all sound so similar. Take this class if you are interested in mythology, it is great!!!!!!!
I love Professor Stem! She is so enthusiastic and energetic about mythology. She kept me interested during every lecture and never did I fall asleep in that class. It's a lot of information to remember but it's all stories! Just sit down and listen! Definitely recommend any class with her!
I took this class as a GE against my better judgement (I hate mythology overall) so my review is slightly biased. Lectures cover the main points of each myth so you don't have to read the thick textbook. Not particularly engaging in terms of the powerpoints but she tries. Go for it if you are interested, else, avoid the 27 lectures.
Class grade is made up of 3 exams. There is a lot of information, but if you put in the time for studying it isn't hard to do well. She posts all her lecture powerpoints online so attendance isn't mandatory, however her lectures are great and worth going to. She uses a lot of enthusiasm when talking about the myths, it makes it easier to remember.
Professor Stem is an amazing professor. The only thing I didn't like about her is that she said int he syllabus that you need the book to get an A in the class, so I blew so much money. She is so good and so informative in her lectures that I did not use my book AT ALL, no exaggeration. The midterms and final are all lecture-based!
Very interesting class! Gave engaging lectures. However, it was a ton of memorization! There is strictly only 2 midterms and a final. No homework. No Extra Credit. No participation points. Your grade is based strictly on multiple choice tests.
Professor Stem is one of my favorite professors I've had at Davis. She is so passionate and enthusiastic in lecture that it made me become interested in the subject and actually enjoy the class. She gave 2 (easy) midterms and a final that each had 67 questions and weren't cumulative. Highly recommend if you want an easy A
For only a 3 unit class, this course is a lot of work (only around test times). Only three midterms, all multiple choice and non-cumulative. Material is extremely detailed and you have to know it well. Make flash cards, they help!
Literally Worst professor ever, the whole class is discussion based and you have to work for your points. You think the writing aspect would be easy, but she will easily mark down your papers on the most trivial errors.
Super sweet and caring professor. She gets fired up during discussions. It's really nice to see an instructor who enjoys what she's teaching. Grade is participation, papers, midterm, final. Lots of reading and writing, can get tedious, but I've learned a ton. She's a fair grader + lightens the workload the last 2 weeks. Tries to push you to think.
If u wanna take a 3 units GE class, avoid her at all costs!!! Tons of materials and those Greek stories/names/places are just impossible to remember. I spent more time on this class than other 4or5 units course but still failed. She didnt care about students real appeal, just repeating some useless so-called method which didnt help me at all.
Just read power points to get studied. But too many detailed things need to remember. This teacher will not listen your problem. No extra credit or cruve. Too hard!!
Prof. Stem is very passionate about what she teaches. I really enjoyed this class and will miss it! 3 midterms - 1 is the final - not cumulative, all multiple choice. Pretty straightforward, there's lots of names but if you make flashcards, you'll be fine. What you need to know is put in bold on the lecture slides, and the slides are on Canvas.
She's passionate about the topic and is a good professor, but her exams require a lot of work to do well on. You have to know a good deal of info (25-30 slides per lecture) for each exam, but they're not cumulative. The class was interesting but not worth it for a 3 unit GE. Overall, class was fun but not worth the effort, exams fair. Took P/NP.
Professor Stem is an amazing lecturer! She is really passionate about Greek Mythology. I thought CLA 10 would be an easy A, however, her test are extremely specific. YOU NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING IN HER LECTURE SLIDES. You need to invest your time and effort if you do want an A in this class. Over all, I enjoyed the class, but it was a lot of work
If you have good recall and already know some stuff about Greek myths, this is truly easy. (The Iliad/Odyssey, Heracles, the Olympic Pantheon, stuff about Oedipus) You can just skip class and check the slides. If not, you will probably want to take some good notes. The professor is passionate about the material and helps it come to life, at least.
A lot of detail and memorization required, but totally manageable if you put in the effort. She posts slides online too. Very passionate about Greek myth and a nice lady. would recommend.
For a 3 unit class , the amount of work and time spent felt more like 4 units. Nonetheless, the content of her class is really straightforward. All you have to do is memorize all her lectures and her exams will be easy. 3 exams, all NON-cumulative. Stem's also really passionate for teaching CLA10, sometimes a little bit too much
Professor Stem was partially engaging in class, but with her lectures also being put online, it is not necessary to go to class. The grade consisted of 3 exams each worth 1/3 of the final grade. The exams were based purely off the lecture and as long as you study steadily before the exam (not the last day or two), you will do fine. Easy A
Her lecture's are really pleasant to attend. It kind of feels like you're in elementary school and it is story time. Stem is quite a good storyteller and you can tell she cares about the material. There is quite a bit of memorization needed for the tests (60-70 names per test) but each test is not cumulative so that's nice.
We love Melissa! She is very passionate and is a great storyteller! The class is very straight forward and it is a lot of name memorizing, but an easy A. She was very helpful when I had to make my midterm early, she actually contacted me first when planning out when and where to take it.
Stem was a very helpful and good lecturer but her tests started off very hard and got easier. 2 MT, 1 final, all non cumulative and worth same %. Class was insanely hard. You have to go to class and pay 100% attention along with studying after lecture if you want to get an A.
Melissa was a really great professor and had a lot of passion for the material she taught. It was fun taking the class but at the same time, a lot of note-taking and memorisation was required. Overall for me, it was a an easy A class and I definitely recommend taking her as a professor if you can!
Best lecturer I've had. She story tells in a way that keeps anyone interested. The material is A LOT, but the tests are very straightforward. If you have time, type the notes before class and just listen during. Study a little bit everyday and take it up a notch near midterms and it's an easy A.
She is very funny and passionate about the subject. However, tests are very specific and no matter how much I studied I didn't get so detailed to earn an A.
This is the best teacher I have ever had in my life, I do not know what I would do without her. She inspires me every single day of my life. I love her so much! <3
Really interesting class, Stem has interesting ways of telling stories to make things more interesting. However tests are so detailed and so specific. No matter how much you study, there's always a couple of questions that will stump you.
Literally makes this easy A class into a C- average for all tests, how is that even possible. Sad because she's a great lecturer, but the exams are just so hard now matter how hard you have studied.
Make sure to study from the very beginning of this class if you wanna get an A
She is an absolutely fantastic lecturer! Her voice really makes you feel for all of the characters and feel like you are there with them. However, her tests are incredibly detail oriented which makes the class difficult. No matter how much I studied, I still got Cs on the midterms.
She gives great lectures and fair tests. Physics 9c broke my soul this quarter and this class was the sanctuary for me. Take Stem's CLA10, you won't regret it :)
She is very passionate and lectures are entertaining, but you basically have to memorize every detail on her slides to do well. There's a lot of memorization and test questions are extremely specific, so its a big time commitment for a 3 unit GE. Test averages were in the high Cs and she didn't curve, so the class was too hard in my opinion.
It is mostly mainly on memorization. If you like Greek myth, then this class is a piece of cake for you. Although she assigns alot of reading, if you attend the lecture then you don't have to read it, because she goes over many details in class. The test is also non-cumulative, makes a good GE class to take.
You must read her lecture slides and memorize everything for the final because they are very extremely specific.
All lectures are posted online so you do not have to go to class. Grade is based off of two midterms and a final (all worth the same). Tests are all multiple choice but the questions are quite specific. Not an easy A! Have to study for the tests.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Stem and her lectures. She is quite entertaining and makes learning mythology more fun than it already is. The class is not difficult as long as you attend every lecture and take good notes. The downfall of most students in this class is assuming that they can skip lecture because the slides are online. Don't skip!!
Cool lectures, if you like the content then this class is easy
Harsh grader. If you wanna take an easy A class, DO NOT take her!!!!! I went to each class and spent a whole night preparing the exams but got a F at the end. So disappointed. NEVER take again.
Extremely lecture heavy. She goes over the readings in class but they aren't difficult or too long to read either. I personally felt like the lectures could have been a lot shorter or broken up towards the end of the quarter and her lecture slides could have been MUCH less detailed. Took me 6 wks to figure out not to write down everything in them
funny professor and has so much passion. lecture heavy but I like that she goes over the readings in a lot of detail during class
Professor Stem is my favorite professor at Davis; she's extremely charismatic and draws you into the myths she tells. Class goes by so quickly because she makes lectures feel like storytime. We had really easy readings which I highly recommend you keep up with. She also shows you the most effective way to take notes! Really, really fun class!
She is an amazing teacher, I took her myth class and it was easy and her lectures were so engaging. Your grade is dependent on tests but the tests arent hard. She is truly passionate about her topic and I really enjoyed her class even though it was just a credit filler GE for me. She made me genuinely interested in myth.
got reported to OSSJA three months after taking the exam, didn't even cheat my laptop just glitched. honestly not worth the hassle for a three unit GE, take it with another professor. exams are 75 questions, gives you an hour to do them within a four hour window.
Say it with me: "HORRENDOUS", not worth the risk. I used to enjoy this class, her lectures were kind of neat & she's a good storyteller. Now it's unnecessary stress, she reported me to OSSJA for supposedly cheating on an online exam. When I DID NOT. She's likely gonna flunk half her class. Do yourself a favor & PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM HER CLASS!

She is a good storyteller and makes learning about Greek Mythology enjoyable. Tests are memorization heavy and multiple choice. I thought she was great. However, her method/reasoning for reporting students is faulty and has led to many INNOCENT students being reported(including me). It's a long process and incredibly stressful. I DO NOT RECOMMEND
I initially thought she was great, but have since seen that there is something wrong with her. She has wrongfully accused multiple students of cheating, and failed us all. The process of fighting this is long, drawn out and tedious, making it seem like all we can do is accept what we didn't do. DON'T take her if you know you don't want to fail.
WORST PROF EVER! Accused me of cheating on 2 exams, but didn't feel the need to inform me until 30 years later! I was made to feel as if taking responsibility for something I didn't do was my only true option, and now I've failed the class! The grade is only based on 4 exams, and a bunch of readings. Readings can be substituted for lectures though
She's the absolute WORST! She's accused many INNOCENT people of cheating on the exams, and rather than inform them she let them be surprised by an OSSJA email! The grade is only based on 4 multiple choice exams, but I HIGHLY suggest avoiding this liar altogether.
The class started off well and I actually had an A until very last minute she (falsely) accused me of cheating on the first two exams of the quarter... I was advised of a grade deduction but didnt know it would go straight to an F. Please avoid!
She sent many students to OSSJA since the online teaching begin. As far as I know, she keeps sending many students to OSSJA for simply switching tabs during exam since spring quarter. However, even though she knows many students may switch tab during exams, she doesnt want to notify students about it before the exam and keeps reporting them.
I was reported to Student Judicial Affairs twice for simply swapping tabs during two exams. Since each exam was weighted so highly, I got two 0's on two different exams which led me to getting an F in the class for "academic misconduct" even though I did something extremely minor. DO NOT take this professor for the life of you.
Let me start by saying I'd give her a 0 if I could. As the other reviews state she has falsely accused many students of cheating, including me. She also waited until nearly the end of the quarter to inform us. The process of denying this is tedious, so it seems like all you can do is accept it. I went from an A to an F just like that. AVOID HER!!
I initially thought she was cool. Your grade is based on 4 exams. There're many readings, but lecture will cover them, seems alright? HOWEVER before you take her, consider the fact that you will probably be accused of cheating and failed despite all the hard work you put into the class! If you're okay with that F on your transcript, by all means...
Having this professor combined with the remote learning was a pretty horrible experience. Her lectures are good, but she's GOT to learn how to be clearer when giving instructions and be more accommodating of students' struggles and concerns, especially during a pandemic. Never want to take her class again unless I'm left with no other choice.
The issue with this prof. is the fact that she falsely reported many students for cheating and subsequently failed them all. The grade is based on 4 exams, which are incredibly detail oriented. Very easy to fail them, so it's best that you take notes based on lecture and not the powerpoint pdfs. Overall, wouldn't recommend taking her AT ALL !
She reports a lot of people since they switched tab to look at notes for the test, although she said it's open note as printing it out (imagine printing 100 pages of lecture slides for a Greek class). Extremely specific and details on her test so good luck. All in all don't take it.
Let me start by saying I'd give her a 0 if I could. As the other reviews state she has falsely accused many students of cheating, including me. I went from an A to an F just like that. AVOID HER!!
Your grade is based on 4 exams. HOWEVER before you take her, consider the fact that you will probably be accused of cheating and failed despite all the hard work you put into the class!
Exams were pretty difficult, but since the class was online it was open note. Just make sure your notes are extremely organized so you know exactly where to flip during the exams as there are a lot of questions. Didnt do any of the readings at all since everything you needed to know for the exams can be found in the lectures.
This prof has an unusually high rating, which lets me know that they have been deleting negative reviews. This prof has a habit of falsely accusing and punishing students for cheating. If that isn't bad enough, she waited until the end of the quarter to inform the students (if you were lucky) that she had reported you to ossja. AVOID HER
I would give a 0 rating if I could. It is absolutely ridiculous how this professor conducts herself. The grades are solely based on 4 exams, and it is highly likely that you will be accused of cheating on the exams months after you have already taken them. Because of this, you will probably fail the course with no idea as to why you were accused.
I enjoyed taking Prof Stem last quarter but imagine my surprise when I found out she reported me to OSSJA, accusing me for cheating on an exam from November. It seems like she does this to many people. Why report innocent students months after an exam? Due to this my final grade became an F despite doing well in the class. Absolutely shocked.
Please avoid this professor. I am confused about why this professor still gets a 3.1 when there are so many low grades for her. You would be sent to OSSJA when you did nothing. And apparently, this professor almost send all her students to OSSJA after the end of the quarter. you can't change to PNP, which really hurts your overall GPA.
I guess there's no need to emphasize more. I was also one of the students who got referred to OSSJA on an exam. I DID NOT cheat... this is just an easy, fun GE so why cheat? There's no clear evidence yet I have to retake this course again to get the GE credit I needed. Avoid her!
Her exams are supposedly open note in which you can, and I quote, "Bring your own written notes or printed notes." So it's hilarious that when you print out the canvas lecture slides, which she allows you to do, you get referred to OSSJA for cheating. Lecture is asynchronous, fancy word for pre-recorded. Lazy exam design + pointless reading
As was previously stated, this professor has the habit of falsely accusing students of cheating months after the exams have already been taken. It is absolutely ridiculous how after the accusation, you are convinced that the best thing for you to do is accept responsibility for something you didn't even do! DESPICABLE and IRRESPONSIBLE, avoid her!
Referring students to SJA for open note exams?? Need I say more? If you're going to report everyone for an OPEN NOTE exam, you have issues.
There is so much reading and she will assign pop quizzes on the 30 pages of reading you have to do. Super tough grader and gave me a terrible score on a rough draft paper, that she explicitly said could be shorter and not include certain things. She grades insanely harshly on a paper that is worth a large chunk of your grade. Would NOT recommend.
Her lectures were good and she is entertaining, but this course was difficult for a G.E. A lot of information and 3 big papers + a final. Need to do the reading and she gives pop quizzes. The class got a little boring by the end of the quarter.
A lot of the reviews are about her reporting cheating but I think that was when kids switched tabs during the online tests. Her in person classes are really easy and she bolds the material you need to know for the tests. The 4 tests make up the grave and are not cumulative. Lectures were engaging, like listening to a story eveyrtime.
Totally fine class but writing this after the class has been from 12-1 everyday and then the final is at 8 am which is not when my brain is ready for classics lol. Later final and the class is top teir.
BEST GE professor, stem really makes lectures fun and go by quick. you meet three times a week and dont have to do anything else besides go to lecture and review before the tests. four tests, all not cumulative and multiple choice. she doesnt like to trick her students and is available for extra help whenever you need. shes also super funny
Lectures are important because that's where you get most of the information for the exams. 4 exams and that's it, no curves no extra credit nothing. You have to really study because it's a lot of memorization.
do NOT take this class . This was not an easy GE as she purposely graded harshly on in class writing assignments that we were timed on. Pop quizzes and random assignments were weighed 20%. They can significantly drop your grade and she never specified what readings to do. Harder than my stem classes. Beware!!
Worst professor Ive every had. Ive taken an upper division and that class was no where near this class on the level of difficulty. She treats her students as if we were in a upper division course. Be ready for pop quizzes. She stated that one of her assignments would be opinion based and graded it harshly. Overall, she grades unfairly.
I took her for class 10 this fall 2021 quarter and I honestly loved her class. All you have to do is show up to lectures, pay attention and study for exams. There is no homework. There are 4 exams which are all Multiple choice and they are easy and straight out of the lecture slides. Overall she makes the content very interesting. Greek M. was fun!
grade is just 4 exams, which are not cumulative. exams are fair, just need to be good at memorization.
Don't take this class if you are not major or interested in this! Run! Trust me, just run. The quizzes are only limited during the lecture for 15-20minutes or even shorter and take 20% of the entire grade. There are 3 papers in this term. She's strict about writing. And 1 final takes 15% of the grade.
Grade is extremely hard, only make up of 4 exams, and exams are extremely hard. Even if you studied for over 12 hours before test, you can't get a high grade.
Go to lecture! The grade is based entirely off 4 non-cumulative tests. It's just memorization, and some of the questions are kind of pointless, but I did enjoy it most of the time. Again, please go to lecture, and do the whole study guide thing she tells you to do. I do wish we had more than just tests though :(.
I did learn a lot in this class but it was far more stressful and confusing than I had anticipated. The lectures were straightforward enough when there were slides but the assignments popped up randomly and the papers were kind of pushed towards the second half of the quarter. There were multiple extra credit opportunities though.
There's a lot of bad reviews cause of what she did in online school (which admittedly was not cool), but for in-person instruction she was great. The class has no assignments, the only grades were 4 exams, which seems daunting but they honestly were easy. I did have extensive Percy Jackson knowledge coming into the class, which made it much easier.
grade is based only off of 4 50-question multiple choice exams, no curve and no exams dropped. exams are on specific details regarding myths, and names tend to be very long and very similar to each other. if you read percy jackson, or the orestia, and/or the illiad (or other greek tragedies) in high school, it will be helpful.
There is no homework for this class, but that's what makes it hard. There are only four exams, and you will have a LOT of material to remember. If you mess up on one exam, it's really detrimental to your grade.
Stem is a great lecturer and made the lectures very engaging. However, the class is graded based on 4 exams each worth 25%, with no curve. Take if you are good at memorization, but hope to god she doesn't report you to SJA for whatever reason
This professor knows her subject very well. Her lectures are clear and entertaining. It's like the adult version sitting in kindergarten circle and being told stories. She is a fair grader. It's 4 mc tests & she goes over all the material. Her policies are clear and expectations of conduct in the class are all outlined in the syllabus.
There were a lot of ungraded reading, but all material on exams is covered in lecture. Pay attention and make study guides as advised. Her syllabus is very clear on her expectations. Her lectures are enjoyable and engaging. She is a great professor and I learned a lot of information with no prior knowledge. 4 non-cumulative exams 50 mcq each.
Probably one of the best professors I've had so far. Her lectures were super fun and made me actually want to go to class. The only thing is that grades are entirely test based so if you don't do well on the tests you're kinda screwed. Overall a really great class, but make sure you have good study skills.
Grading is entirely test-based, with no writing assignments and lots of readings. However, I didn't do the readings and still passed the class. Her lectures were pretty fun! I recommend using Quizlet to study because there is a lot of terminology and characters (along with their attributes) to memorize.
No curve, 3 midterms & a final, each comprised of 50 multiple choice questions (A-E) & worth 25% of the overall grade. That's it, no extra credit, just tests. You don't need to do the readings, specifically states everything on the test is on the slides, important stuff is in bold. Slides are posted, but lectures have funny stories to help remember
I absolutely adore Professor Stem. Going to her lectures was like listening to a story and she makes Greek mythology so interesting! You definitely need to study but just rewatch the lectures or tell the stories back to yourself! I loved this class and would take it again if I could.
Great lecturer with great energy and enthusiasm. I enjoyed going to her lectures. Your grade is made up of 4 exams which are extremely specific so you have to memorize a lot of information. Don't take this class if you're a bad test taker.
You don't really need to do the readings as she just explains it all in class. The class grade is purely the four tests all out of 50 points. They're not to bad if you study, everything she bolds in the lecture notes have a chance to be on the test. Lectures are good and she seems to enjoy teaching. The tests aren't accumulative.
I really like Professor Stem! Lectures are so fun the way she tells the myths make them accessible and easy to understand. On her slides she bolds important things she wants you to know for the exam, which is helpful, so you know what to study. The hardest part of the class for me was memorizing the characters and their relationships.
great professor all around. I do think the exams could be refined, as it is one of those classes where you just memorize for a multiple choice test, but besides that she is super chill and makes lectures fun.
If you like mythology this class should be relatively easy for you. Interesting lectures told in a story like format(it's important to go to lecture), and the tests are pretty much just memorizing the information on her slides. 4 tests make up the whole grade and averages are high so no curve.
Stem was an amazing lecturer. She was clearly very passionate about what she does and made lectures fun. There is a good amount of memorization but not bad. Class is graded on 4 tests, 50 mcq, each 25% of grade and non-cumulative. Things you have to remember for test are bolded in slides, and the readings aren't necessary at all to pass the tests.
If you can memorize hundreds of slides for one test easily, then you can definitely pass the class! You don't need to do the readings and she says to only remember the bold on the slides, however the bold is pretty much every line. Only 4 tests in the grade, so if you can't do multiple-choice tests, you're screwed. Stories are interesting though
She was great. Super accommodating and understanding. The class it self is easy to study for as long as you attend the lectures and review the slides. I studied about 4 hours for each midterm and earned an easy A. Overall a really interesting class and I enjoyed every lecture. Your whole grade is based off what you get for midterms!!
Professor Stem is an engaging lecturer. The whole class is graded on 4 non-cumulative exams (the 4th being the final) & they're just based on content from the lectures. Defiantly go to lecture because she tells the stories passionately in a way that will make you remember. If you make the study guides after each class it's not as hard to study
Totally loves teaching! A shame most of her students don't love learning.
Professor Stem makes Greek mythology really engaging. The class is test-heavy, but the content is manageable if you focus on the lecture slides. unstuckstudy proved super helpful for test prep alongside other study tools like Quizlet.
