Great instructor for this class. She clearly knows what shes talking about and has a passion for the subject. She makes one of the most boring psychology classes bearable and even interesting. By not requiring attendance and posting lectures online, she allows her students to decide if they need to go to lectures to understand the material
Swisher is great and I highly recommend her! The exams are VERY reasonable. This class could easily be way more obnoxious, but Swisher makes it interesting and not too painful. There is also a lab section with more assignments and a final APA paper about an in-class experiment, but the quality of your grad student depends on the luck of the draw.
She knows an incredible amount about the topics she teaches, especially in behavior change methods. She structures the class to help people learn as much as possible so instead of exams, we practiced the material throughout the entire semester, which I loved. She cares that we learned things and tried to help as much as possible.
Swisher was really helpful in explaining things. She always gave us multiple explanations of the same thing, and if it seemed like everyone wasn't doing too great on a specific topic after an exam, she took extra care to ensure we understood it while still moving the class along to new stuff. Very accessible outside of class
Dr. Swisher is really great at engaging you in the content she is teaching. She was very accessible outside of class and was really willing to help me with other psychology concepts I didn't understand that were unrelated to the class.
Had her for 2 courses and now avoid taking a class by her at all costs. So many lectures that are long and boring. The note taking guides are a hassle to download to write in. Seems very smart but isn't the best at teaching the knowledge at a understandable level.
This is the worst class I have ever taken, Dr. Swisher has awful lectures and her lecture slides make no sense. She has many homework assignments that take up to 2 hours to complete (usually 2 homeworks/week), and she sends out exam study guides the day before the exam so it is not helpful whatsoever. I would not recommend anyone take this class.
Her lectures are long and boring, she's not a very good teacher. If you look around the lecture hall you'll see half of the class asleep. She made an entry level class much more difficult than needed. Changed the curriculum to have 4 exams a semester, other sections have no assessments at all. If you're interested in psych, CHOOSE ANOTHER TEACHER.
PSY120 is supposed to be one of the easiest courses at purdue but she just makes it so much harder. DO NOT PICK SWISHER!!
Here exams are whats most right
Course was organized. Top Hat homeworks took an absurd amount of time to complete. There are four exams PLUS the final in her section, which is very different from others. Exams are pretty specific. Very nice and helpful outside of class but the course is just hard to get through.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy entry level to psych but Swisher made it extremely difficult for no reason. Im not sure what my grade will be because she makes the grading system difficult. The exams cover far more information that necessary and she does not provide any resources to prepare for them. Get another professor for PSY120
She lectures over things that make no sense. The homework is due BEFORE the lectures, so you have to read the whole chapter, which is near 20 pages, and answer about 60 questions on them. She gives you nothing to prepare for tests, and the tests are extremely hard. When I talk to anyone else in PSY120, they say it's so easy. Find another professor
For an A+ in her class, you need a 394/400; You will have to maintain 100% on homework AND attendance, only getting 6 questions total wrong on her four midterms and final. You'll also have to spend at least an hour or two on homework (about 30-60 online textbook questions for each chapter) every week. My advice: just aim for an A- or a B.
Absolutely terrible professor. If you have a choice, choose someone else.
She is such a bad professor. Lectures arent clear and are different from the homework. 2 60 question homework assignments a week. Most PSY120 classes dont even have tests. Shes also the ONLY PSY120 teacher to give the final in person, and says others are against university guidelines. Terrible.
Professor Swisher is an awful lecturer, her lectures are not clear at all. She has four midterms and a cumulative final in her class, while other PSY 120 classes do not even have exams. The exams are extremely specific, and the homework is around 60 questions/assignment, usually 2 assignments/week. Take another PSY 120 professor!
She sucks. Emailed her about the final last week and she never answered. Terrible lecturer. Do not take a class with Swisher.
Dr. Swisher is amazing. As long as you attend her lectures and do the homework the exams should be easy. Homework is included in the book and is guided with the reading which helps as a study tool for exams. She is very understanding and is a great person to go to if you need help in her classes. Swisher is my favorite professor on campus
Dr. Swisher is a terrible professor. I don't understand how some who's research is in learning could be such a bad professor. Her lectures are boring and she barely teaches. As long as you do the homework and study the vocab words you can get an A. If you can switch to the other section of the class. Unless you are a psych major/minor its a waste
This is supposed to be one of the easiest classes on campus. Entry level course, required by most majors, and mostly everyone I have heard gets A's. Yet, it is one of my hardest classes, and I am going to get a B. I am getting a B in a class that should be easy because of Swisher. Bringing down my GPA because of ENTRY LEVEL PSYCH. Terrible.
I rather enjoyed having Dr. Swisher as a professor. Stats can be a hard subject, but she made it really simple and broke everything down to ensure that her students would understand. The only reason why I'm giving her a 4 instead of a 5 is because the final was kind of curveball and I felt like that wasn't fair.
I think this prof was nice, but lecture was extra boring and hard to follow. Perhaps because stats is difficult, but material could have been presented in a more engaging way. You might think you're failing, but she isn't a terribly hard grader and you may do better on exams than you think. She will also answer your questions, is approachable
Dr. Melissa Swisher has been the most personable professor I have had here at Purdue. Purdue is a very large university with roughly 50,000 students, so flying under the radar is the norm. However, Dr. Swisher knew me by name and we had friendly conversations after lecture often. Dr. Swisher is both a great professor and just person in general.
Not sure why these ratings are so negative- she's a professor, her job is to instruct. Professor Swisher is phenomenal in terms of communication and accessibility outside of class. Just show up, do the homework, and you'll be fine.
I dont know why she makes this class so hard since lots of concepts that need to be remembered and in-class exam with 50-80questions that are super detailed. The textbook is not useful as well.
So aggravating to listen to lecture, cannot get the attention of the students and it is just her reading directly off of slides that she will post anyways. study based on the attendance quizzes for the tests and you will do okay but it is still random and harder than it should be. She also will have the last final of the week so prepare.
PSY 311 is an upper-level course. You must know the ins and outs of between 8-12 academic research articles per exam. It will be time-consuming, but not necessarily difficult. Lectures are dense. You may be tempted to skip but I'd advise against that because it's too much content to cram last minute. You'll get a good grade if you put the work in.
Would not recommend, if you can choose another professor please do so. She seems like a nice lady but her lectures are so incredibly boring and she reads directly off the slides. Class difficulty depends on what your workload is for the semester. She has an Excel spreadsheet that helps you know where your grades stand in the class that's helpful.
Exams are kinda tough and mainly about research articles you read. She gave us an exam the day we were back from Thanksgiving break, and she gave us only four days to make a presentation. Classes are just her reading off of her slides, and it seems as if she does not listen to students when a lot of us are struggling.
Dr. Swisher is a great professor. She's very personable and clearly cares her about students. I found the lectures to be fairly interesting (given the class) and informative. My one complaint is that the course seemed a bit disorganized, especially regarding the in-class experiments.
I had her for both PSY 120 and PSY 203, her lectures are extremely boring and monotone but the tests are pretty easy and I think there is basically always a big curve. I hope I do not get her for any more classes.
The class was really boring and her lectures were hard to get through. I feel bad for saying this but her voice would just bother me so much sometimes. The exams were reasonable since she pulls from her lecture notes and attendance questions. The final APA paper was SO confusing but also manageable since she's open to questions and gives feedback.
She doesn't explain anything in class and will blow by important topic points only to come back to them later after explaining their application when she'll finally explain what they are.
Swisher has a very monotone voice, she never tries to change to make lectures more exciting. Tests are multiple choice but really hard, she never explains hard topics fullyand expects you to understand it. The APA paper at the end it terrible. Take another professor for this class, no one else has to write this absurd research paper by themselves.
Professor Swisher is kind and cares about her students. Her lectures and materials, however, are extremely boring and repetitive. When taking the exams for this class, it felt as though I had not been prepared despite attending lectures and taking notes beforehand. There was a lot of homework to complete each week, especially at the end.
The lectures and labs in this class did not help with learning the material at all. She reads directly off of the slides during the lectures, and the slides are not well organized. Many of the definitions and explanations of topics are not complete, either, but you have to memorize her version of the content to do well on the exams.
I haven't felt strongly enough to write a review on here, but I HATE this class. She seems like a nice lady, but her class is unbelievably boring and hard to follow. She reads directly off the slides the ENTIRE time and does not cover topics fully. She does not interact with the students at all during class and has attendance quizzes. DO NOT TAKE!
Super sweet gal but the lectures are so boring. You sit there for an hour and 15 of her just reading slides and doing one example of the criteria she just read off. If you have the chance to get another professor, please do. She just doesn't explain things all the way and expects you to know it.
Swisher is a great professor. The lectures did get a little tedious at times, but that's because the material itself is not very flashy. Dr. Swisher made the lectures fun to listen to. You can tell she really knows a lot about research and psychology, and she is very accommodating. Homeworks and quizzes are very straightforward, as are exams.
i really liked dr swisher's lectures, but it is intense content so be prepared. i never used the textbook she told us to buy. exams were super hard so study a lot. she was really nice and understanding if you get behind. lab activities are easy and you can watch lectures online for full credit
DO NOT TAKE HER. Rude over email. Reads directly off lecture slides in a monotone voice that puts half the class to sleep. Worst brightspace organization I have ever seen, and I have taken classes where the professors are 50-60+ years old and are not very good with technology. This class will take something from you.
If you have any prior knowledge in statistics this class will be a breeze! You get attendance points by going to lecture or watching online. Assignments/homework are easy and you often get unlimited tries. There are 3 exams and a final that is open-note with a week to complete. Lectures are a bit boring but the class itself is easy.
This class isn't exciting, but it's simple. I completed every lecture online, except labs, which (most) can also be done online. I understood the material and did well on exams with minimal studying. The final paper is done in increments with feedback, she is very helpful and open to questions. Swisher is one of the sweetest professors I've known.
People here are so dramatic with these reviews. Dr Swisher is very sweet and her classes are not very difficult. In PSY 201 there are vocab words, multiple choice questions, and math by-hand type stuff. Her lectures are monotone and a bit dull but she records the lectures. You have to put the effort in to learn the content, but it is not that hard.
Dull lectures but with repetitive and easy content. Lectures are recorded and attendance is online and can be done without attending class (except lab, which varies in requirements for attendance). Most of your grade is the tests (50 mc in person, very easy and a lot are questions from the attendance). Easy class. Would recommend.
She was alright. The lectures got a bit boring, but writing them regardless of her method of note-taking helped. The APA paper wasn't hard, and the exams were push-overs. Perfectly adequate professor.
Overall a good professor. While attendance is "mandatory" you can also do the attendance for the lectures online if you don't go to the class. Some of the labs are also accessible online but not all, depends on the week. She has very clear communication and is willing to answer students' questions without looking down on you.
tests are in person, if you do badly then the APA paper will help boost your grade, it is a large part of the class percentage. Lectures posted online, don't have to attend class. Exams are pretty straight forward. This class can be done fully online. Shes an alright grader, there's opportunities to make ups.
She was very monotone and not a fun teacher. I have never scored so low in a class. I'm an A and B student and this is the first class I have ever gotten a D+
- lectures are monotone - boring lectures - does not keep up with the syllabus posted - random changes with schedule - typically a straight A/A+ student, but I have a C in her class - if I knew she was going to be the professor, I would not have taken the class
One of the least enthusiastic and engaging professors I've had. Her way of speaking is in a monotone-Kardashian style voice that gets irritating. Teaches the material like she is going to fall asleep, drinks beverages loudly over recorded lectures. This class might as well be online, she just reads off the slides. She needs to be re-evaluated.
Some of the reviews are unnecessarily mean and are nitpicking things that have nothing to do with the quality of the class, lecture, or content. This is one of the best professors I've ever had and I would take her classes again. I took PSY201 + PSY203 concurrently in the same semester, and she was super helpful and accommodating. I got two A's.
read slide all the time like a machine. Too much lecture in BrightSpace you will not find the key points. Unreasonable assignments and slow grading on paper.
When you email her her emails back are rude and she does not care about helping/accommodating you. So don't get sick/hospitalized or you are tough out of luck. Exams are not very hard, studied very little and got good grades. Paper guidelines are very clear and they grade fairly (she doesn't grade them her TAs do).
Prof. Swisher does not reliably respond to emails. lectures are posted online as videos 3 times a week and are 50-90 minutes. class time is used mainly for iclicker points and peer discussions. she is very unaccommodating and resentful of students who have questions or concerns as she takes this as "extra work to do". very lazy, and unenthusiastic
During lectures, she makes little to no effort to engage with students or add life to the class, literally everyone is falling asleep. She eats and takes long sips of her coffee while teaching+ talks in an irritating Kardashian-like voice.Very unhelpful, gets aggressive if you ask a question about an assignment/test.Worst professor I've had at Purdue
Bro just ghosts you on email fr
She's rude when it comes to emails and doesn't really explain things fully. Her voice is very monotonous and can be grueling to listen to at times when the lectures are really long. She lowkey kind of sounds like Trisha Paytas when you speed her up 2x which is funny for a hot minute but gets annoying really fast. Do not recommend her at all
A lot of reviews might be over-exaggerated. It is a college class, putting in work is expected. I liked the flipped classroom, watching lectures outside of class and practicing inside class. She puts a lot of work into her course content which is nice. She's super nice when you talk to her, always willing to help.
The class isn't too difficult since the instructions for the paper and exams are very clear. However she is SO boring and the lectures are impossible to understand. She is very monotone and I don't think she would notice if someone died in the classroom. She doesn't answer questions well. I don't think she is mean but lectures are so boring.
Genuinely liked Swisher, the class was extremely easy coming from someone who isn't the best with math. Notes are lot but not hard to follow, and can completely take the class online if you wanted to. She has tons of attendance drops and hw/activity drops. Tests are extremely easy, she does a good job helping you succeed.
I've now had Dr. Swisher for two different classes and she gives her students every resource needed to succeed and is very helpful with answering questions.
She somehow made finding the median hard, which within itself is an impressive feat. She tends to over complicate things and I found it easier just reading and taking notes on my own rather than listening to her lectures. It is an easy class if you have experience in stats or research beforehand but look for other professors if you can.
The class itself was easy however her lectures are very boring and difficult to pay attention to. The tests are ok with one drop so it is easy to get a good grade and she helps a lot with the final APA paper. I would take this class with her if you can learn outside of dry lecturing.
Overall this class was okay. Id agree that the lectures were very boring but the class is very easy and very lenient on grading. Exams were easy as well.
The hate is unwarranted. Sure she may not be the most lively professor during lecture, but the lectures are all informative and she explains things greatly. They are not insufferable as people make it seem. Dr. Swisher also provides a ton of resources to help you succeed. People just love to hate on others for some reason.
I took 203 before with swisher and made it through fairly. 201 was a different story. i knew from 203 i didn't love the way she taught but figured i could manage. please take this with lim kessler if you can. i am retaking with her this semester and only a few weeks in and feel 100% difference. kessler teaches far better & does all homework w you!
Professor Swisher is great. I honestly don't understand the hate. Her lectures can be a little monotone, but if you pay attention, you'll get a great grade. She is also very helpful and puts a lot of effort into making the class as easy as possible while providing us with many resources. I would 100% take her class again.
The class is flipped so you have to do hours of work outside class, but nothing in class. But you have to go to class because of iClicker. The lab period is for you to write an APA paper. There are a lot of dropped assignments. The lectures are pointless. The class content isn't interesting. The tests are difficult.
Swisher's lectures are long and monotone, but informative. You are required to go to 10/22 lectures and complete iClicker for points. You do not have to go to the labs, as there are online alternatives. If you use her study materials and lectures for exams, you'll be completely fine (got 98,100,98). Honestly did not do much for this class
Really nice professor, had time to meet with everyone for their project. No exams, just open note quizzes. Final project was a lot of work but not impossible and she lets you do it individually or as a group. The rubrics are always super clear and detailed.
She gets more hate than deserved, I wasn't a fan of the class just not because of her personality. Her class was structured differently, a lot of the lessons were assigned as video quizzes leaving lectures to be review and application questions. The exams are in person and there is a final paper to write, the paper was easier than most.
I took the class online over the summer and it easy. I didn't find her as boring as the other reviews indicate. Despite being crammed into a month the class was easy to keep up with. I spent ~4 hours a day on it but didn't do anything for it over the weekend. Psych is not a topic that excites me but she managed to make it relatively interesting.
I have had Dr. Swisher for three semesters in a row and each time it was clear that she really cares about the topics she teaches as well as her students. Her expertise is primarily in behavior change methods so she could answer any and all questions. Always willing to meet with you after or outside of class to clear up any confusion.
Professor Swisher is incredibly knowledgeable about the content she teaches, however, I don't think teaching is her forte. Many of the lectures were incredibly monotone and hard to follow. The tests were also very difficult for a psychology class, with my class having an average of ~75%. Much of her content was very number heavy as well.
Had her for PSY 203. Amazing professor. She is very flexible when it comes to assignments, deadlines, and attendance, and has very has engaging lectures. She is very helpful and provides tons of resources for the research paper and exams.
All of you saying that she gets too much hate are suck ups. This class was horrible. Half the time she can't figure out how to use the software right and she's actually the most boring person to listen to of all time. I've legitimately never wanted to spontaneously pass away as much as I do every single time I go to this class.
I honestly do not understand the hate she gets. She is one of the nicest professors at Purdue. She provides so much support for all of the assignments and her rubrics are very clear. She provides examples and answers for almost all of the assignments. There are two video quizzes per week, but you get to drop 7/8 at the end of the semester.
She gives many quizzes and exams and also uses iclicker. I really do like her and feel like she does not deserve the hate. I actually understood what she was teaching and ended up doing better in her class. I do wish she would add more excitement in her voice when going over the lectures.
She is not the most interesting lecturer. Just info dumps the subject matter at you in the most monotone voice imaginable. But she is really sweet and nice. Very accommodating.
The class is honestly really easy. Some of the exams were a little difficult. Essay is easy, you get a lot of instruction. You barely have to go to class which is really nice especially because she has the most monotoned voice I've ever heard. It's honestly hard to listen to her.
People are being too harsh. Dry lecturer, but expectations are clear and attendance policy is super lenient. Amount of assignments can be intimidating, but everything is spelled out for you ahead of time so it's super straightforward.
She does take attendance but drops around half of the attendance points so you don't have to attend classes for half the semester. The video quizzes aren't bad and exams are fine if you review the video quiz notes. Also, the APA paper is pretty easy and outlined exactly how to write it, plus you're given feedback multiple times.
literally so monotone i fell asleep in every class. she CANNOT teach, be ready to do a lot of self studying outside classes. the only good thing i can say is that psy 200 was well structured, so getting an A is easy bc the exams are easy and the attendance quizzes/tafmeds/coglabs are alright too. but you really gotta put in the work outside class.
Her lectures are annoying, she speaks with a bored cali girl accent, and her slides don't match the "study guide" she gives for the exam (which is just 200 arbitrary sentences and terms), so very often material you aren't expecting appears on the exams. She teaches the terms and definitions but not how to apply them, and the exam is on application.
She is OK. She is approachable and often includes fun pop references in her lecture slides, but lectures are difficult to sit through because her speech has a sleep-inducing quality and she mostly reads off slides. Her tests are doable with a moderate amount of self-study, thus easy to get an A, but beware of her monotonous lectures.
