Be afraid of her quizzes that are given the minute class starts and literally if your 2 minutes late you are tardy and you can not take it. They are very hard and specific. She rather play sixth grader games than cover the material that you are responsible for in detail.
It seemed hard at first but if you show up on time and do all the work it is not bad. Also she was helpful when I wrote my paper. She showed a lot of enthusiasm for the topic.
I'm glad I dropped her class. The quizzes are killers! She says they r supposed to b "extra credit,"but they r still part of your grade? She's really into history. It seems as though u can't get "close" 2 her so that she can remember u,& give u that A;people tried, but it didn't seem to work.Take her if u LIKE HISTORY A LOT! IM SO HAPPY I DROPPED!=)
Good teacher--she really tried to use dfferent methods to help us. She used power pt, group work, lots of primary sources. She does have high expectations but this is college after all.
Assigns weekly work religiously in this course... An online course that keeps you on your toes moreso than a regular course. But she's insightful and as long as you do the work, with effort, you will do well. Yet this is speaking prior to our midterm... so who really knows. But overall, a lot of work but easy to do well.
As someone elle said yes, there are serious weekly assignments. But they are engaging ones that make me think about the world. One week we wrote letters to each other as if we were from diffwerent time periods in places in Europe (like the paris Commune and Hungary). Overall I like this class and I would recommend Melissa as an online professor!
The class I am taking does not sound like the same one mentioned here. There is a serious workload in this course, but it is paced and the assignments are always due on a certain day so it's not like there are surprises. The people complaining are probably the same ones who never participate or worse the ones whose posts seem copied.
She knows history, but she lacks any kind of teaching skills. Avoid!
Good instructor. I liked the lectures. The quizzes are hard though.
This was a good class. I sort of wish there was a quiz now and then or maybe some study guides might have helped, because the midterms and final were challenging. But if you keep up with the assignments it is easy to do well. Believe her when she says that the online class is for real though--you do have to study!
She is really hard teacher. You are expected to deliver college material course work, so you should reconsider taking her if you just want to fufill a GE. The quizzes are nitty gritty in detail(hard). If you really want to learn history, then you will with Melissa. Be prepared to work really hard and do a lot of reading;class is very time consuming.
I took her online class. Melissa was very clear in her syllabus and the class really lived up to what she said it would. There is a huge reliance on the textbook because of the online class style, but the discussions were really good. I liked these and I thought Melissa did a good job keeping the class related to the world we live in today.
This class was very good. I enjoyed the material and the assignments. The instructor pushes us to think about the way the past affects the present. I liked the discussions. As someone said, Professor Verlet's online class does require time and effort. It's a great way to fulfill your GEs. We watched movies and visited a museum, which was great!
Melissa is a serious instructor who expects college-level work. Since we are in college I can't understand why this surprises some students. She definitely holds us to high standards (no excuses!), but she is so kind and insightful and she really wants students to succeed. She went beyond the call to help me when I struggled. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
great class , good discussions - and some varied assignments. learned a lot but had to work for my grade. pretty quick to respond to emails
This class is one long miserable grind of pointless busywork. It will burn you out on school - which, I have a feeling, is Verlet's goal. (She is one of those teachers who does not want you to do well) Avoid this class.
Melissa kept us busy. I was surprised at first by the amount of work, but when you get into the routine it is not a hard class. When people particpated more in the TDs the class was more intriguing. I got the grade I deserved (a B-could have earned an A if I had not missed assignments). Overall this was one of the better online classes I've taken.
Unbelievably tedious class with mountains of busy-work. Teacher is disorganized and unresponsive. I cannot recommend this teacher.
I took an online class w/Prof Verlet. The discussions were interesting but the power point on the 19th century was my favorite assignment! She was a fair but tough grader with very high standards. Some how she always knew if we were faking it in the postings. This class was not fluff but was actually as challenging as the "regular" classes I took.
This class is online and requires constant attending to. She is very strict on assignements, and they are due every week on time or she will drop you. There is a lot of reading required every week, so be prepared. The material is boring unless you like Western European history. I feel indifferent about the teacher, take her or don't.
Unfair when it comes to grading. Lacks many of the attributes students expect from a good teacher. If you ask for personalized detailed feedback you can forget about receiving it. It Might be the number of students she has but seems disorganized and unresponsive when communicating through email. AVOID!
I found that instructor respond very fast. I ask for detailed feed back on my essay, and she replied and give me more information. It seem to me that the people who do not like this teacher are the ones disorganized themselves or maybe lazy, or the one that plagiarize. She is very strict on academic honesty.
Took summer online class, Professor was very clear in her expectations, provided a detailed and helpful syllabus. Responds to emails quickly. Weekly quizzes were difficult, but not worth much overall. Threaded discussions a great way to earn points. 1 short essay, grades fairly. Final was EASY (open book..)and grades on a curve. Would recommend!
I took her online class last semester--prepared me well for transfer to UCLA. I've never met Melissa face to face but I will take her again if another class is offered, b/c the assignments were fun & interesting--they really made me think. She's one of the best instructors, ground or online--she is tough but she is fair and consistent.
I actually found that Melissa responded almost immediately to all of my emails and questions. My only complaint about the class was that some of my peers did not bother to put any thought into their writing (let alone proofread--hello, this college!), so it was sometimes difficult to have in-depth debates/discussion. Take Melissa--she is awesome.
I missed the final and she let me retake it. what more can i say, she is just understanding. I wouldn't have passed the class if she didn't let me retake the exam and redo my fieldwork assignment. Take her online class. It's worth the effort.
Melissa is very encouraging. She helped me through the semester to better understand the material. If you need a GE fulfilled take this class. Assignments are due weekly but if you prepare and take it seriously you'll do well. Be warned though, she is really strict on academic honesty so make sure you pay attention to the readings week one!
Take this online class if you like to write--a lot of the class is discussion. Professor Verlet's midterms are not easy but she did give us weekly IDs to know and I did much better after the first test, b/c then I knew how much to study. This was by far the best online course I have taken so far (6 at a few different schools).
Class offers assignments for ppl that like learning with visuals and projects. The instructor is really knowledgeable and responsive. Extra credit is being offered to us if we wnat to improve grades, too. Highly reccomended!
This instructor is excellent. I found her to be fair, the previous review is ridiculous. I took her twice and both my friend (who I took 1 class with) and I never felt Inst. Verlet graded with a bias. I enjoyed the discussion assignments & found that the tests required same amount of studying as ground classes (open book but timed, mult.choice).
Very tough.Exams are hard to pass even if studied for hours.Lost points for spelling mistakes(which was not capitalizing a few I?s).Got an 89.19% in the class and still got a B because"borderline typically means you are well less than .5 of a percentage point from the next grade up".I wasted hours trying to get an A and now got my GPA killed.Avoid!
Verlet really tries to make her class interactive and interesting. Her class does require work, but she is very helpful. The tests are easy if you now what to study...hint to future hist 2 students: use the book's online chapter summaries, her test questions come almost word for word from those resources!
This teacher is psycho about citing sources. She even cites the sources used on her freaking quiz! Took online and she did not respond to half my e-mails. She even docked me a grade when I did not cite one of the textbooks - I did not even use it for the assignment! Work is doable and understandable but her grading and helpfulness suck.
She isn't easy, but she's fair. This is one of the most organized online classes. She does take a few days at the beginning of the semester where we have academic honesty assignments, I liked this b/c we knew what to expect. It's rigorous, but I found Prof Verlet very helpful. She responded to all my emails within a day.
Love, love, loved this class! Connected to the real world in so many ways. Instructor responded with several suggestions when I told her I was having trouble knowing what to study for quizzes. Very helpful--highly recommend!
This class was cool but kinda crazy, w/so much reading and writing! i learned so much from this class and teacher though, so can't complain. Class design was awesome, lot of visuals and we watched a few films 2. Not real flexible w/deadlines. Recomend highly.
Love the format of the class, really enjoyed several of the assignments. stuck to her syllabus like glue. expects students to put in 100% every week, which made for good discussions but a lot of work :)
A Challenging class. A lot of reading, writing and using of tools like Power Point. But very rewarding and interesting course. If you are passionate about history and really want to learn something, Dr. Verlet's class is for you.
Her 8-week class is pretty time consuming. Don't wait until Friday to start the work. She is extremely straight forward with grades and assignments, so follow her directions precisely. I had an A all semester long but my final grade dropped to a B, for an improper citation on the paper. But you're definitely bound to learn, if you put forth effort.
I took this class as an 8 week online class and loved it. There is a lot of work and you have to stay on top of it the whole week, but I highly recommend this class. Prof Verlet is extremely organized and wants her students to do well. As long as you keep up with the work and do well on the writing parts of the class you should do fine. I got at A!
Great class and strong instructor. You have to be self-motivated though, it's all online.
Awesome class and teacher is organized and responsive. It's not easy but it's worthwhile.
One of the more challenging classes I have taken--prepped me for transfer better than most I have taken. 8 wk class is intense so take it if you can work by yourself and meet due dates. Prof Verlet was AWESOME about helping us improve, but she isn't kidding about deadlines. Whatever you do don't plagiarize...she has NO tolerance for it.
I took this class 16 week and had to drop it then tried again with 8 week one. This 8 week class was better because it moves faster. The professor isn't a easy grader but she always help me when I email her.
Feedback was fantastic, exams were tough but not too bad if you read. Took 8 week, online class. She has so many rules you will think you are working hard and learning but the only thing you will learn is how to follow her many rules. No lecture materials. All your learning about history will be from the (excellent) text. Expect to spend 8+ hrs/wk.
Took eight week course. Intense but manageable. Budget your time and don't blow off assignments. Fair grading but set with deadlines.
Very difficult teacher. She goes an extra mile to be difficult in everything she does. The class is about history but she turned it about English and punctuations. this is just uncalled for. I love history and will always take history classes, but taking the class does not have to be this negative.
Very good class. It wasn't easy, but I liked it a lot because the teacher was fair and she seemed to really want us to succeed. The class involves a lot of writing with different types of sources such as primary, so once you get the hang of that it's a really interesting class. Most importantly this class prepped me for upper level history classes.
Very organized rubrics, professor, and lectures. Discussion every week, require 2 text books to get the full credit, 1 quiz each week, and exams. If you don't read, you will not get an A. If you don't use proper grammar, you will not get an A. You need to show effort. Overall pretty good tho. :)
Obsessed with citations and goes the extra mile to be confusing and difficult. Most professors have assignments due at midnight, but she makes them due at 10PM which is frustrating. Hard to be creative with class discussions when she sets an exhausting list of criteria. This is the worst experience I've had with a class, sad because I love history.
Not very helpful professor unfortunately. Lots of point were taken off assignments without any constructive criticism. She simply referred to the guidelines, which I re-read several times and tried to adjust my assignments accordingly, but never to her satisfaction. Highly frustrating for a student that wants to do better and is trying.
Good class if you can put in the time. 8-week course is very compressed and its a lot of work in a short amount of time. I did well and the discussions were good.
Very difficult class. She is very unclear about directions. She should be an English professor, not a history one. She is more focused of grammar and citations than history. I love history and hated her class.
Verlet's Hist 02 class is tough but manageable. She offered us extra credit every week (!). I struggled with the threaded discussion work at first but her grading rubric and feedback is good and I caught on around the third assignment. You also get to retake each quiz--very helpful. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about history.
This class takes up some time. You have to write every week. If you wait until the last minute you will struggle but it gets easier after the first few discussions. She has a rubric for grading the writing assignments which I liked. Strict on deadlines. Quizzes can be retaken. Overall a fair teacher with high standards.
This was pretty standard for online classes I have taken. Maybe more writing than usual, but otherwise, fair instructor and good response time for questions. She's really organized and expected us to be too, so it's not worth it to ask for assignment extensions. You can't get by wout the books.
So much reading I wanted to vomit. I took the online course in Winter '15 and the work load was just way too much. You should see the study guide. It's ridiculous. DO NOT take her in the Winter.
Took 8 week class. Recommend for anyone who wants to learn about European history.
Really difficult class. I consider myself a history buff and I really didn't like this class. She is very difficult and a very tough grader. If you check out online grade report stats, you'll find she only gives a couple A grades in the whole class.
Intense class but manageable. Good GE option. Extra credit was offered several times. recommend for those who like to read, there is a lot of reading and a lot of writing.
Quiz every week, a final exam, lots of discussions. She offers extra credit. You have to work for the grade you want. I liked the way the grading was done with a rubric and comments. You can take each quiz two times which is helpful. She is kind of rigid with deadlines though. Overall I recommend, because I learned and liked the class.
She presents challenging classes, but she's a great professor. She's always quick to reply to emails, she's a fair grader if you put in the work, and she's very helpful. There is a TON of reading in this class, but she tells you exactly what you need. She does try to keep it interesting as well. Challenging class, great professor.
She is a tough grader, took her online course , she does give out extra credit, but if you don't do it the way she want's ,she won't give you credit, that goes for homework also.
Challenging class. The teacher is organized, and she is a hard but fair grader. She offered a ton of extra credit, around 10 writing assignment opportunities, and a quiz every week. It's a good choice for your GE requirements.
This class was a little overwhelming at first, however once you get into the swing of it it becomes easier. Proper citations are a huge aspect of this class, and either a short essay or discussion and a quiz each week. Overall pretty manageable and there were plenty of extra credit opportunities. Read and follow instructions, get an A.
In short, don't take her class if you care about your education as she grades unfairly and assigns a ridiculous amount of reading. The good thing about her is that she's organized but definitely a professor who does not care about your own good and that I'm sure of. Stay away!
Good class, mostly discussion based. Uses a rubric to grade and replies fast to emails. Responsive and organized, but firm deadlines.
In depth class that requires a lot of reading and a lot of writing. The main difference between this class and other online courses I have taken is that this one was very structured. I recommend this course but you have to put in the effort and participate in the discussions every week to do well.
Avoid her class at all cost, I took her class because of positive remarks and the fact that you get to re-take quizzes. Beware! The quizzes are completely different from each other, The allotted time is no way near enough, she makes you do exam guard which is time consuming and ridiculous, and you can only see one question at a time. AVOID HER!!!!
You have to write a paper, respond to other's papers, and take a quiz every week. Hard grader. Hard to get an A on papers, even if you follow the rubric exactly. DO NOT take this class if you can't churn out multiple papers in a day or two. A TON of work but you'll learn a LOT. (Get comfortable with primary sources and know MLA rules well)
Class is time consuming but thorough. You'll really learn history. I took the 12 week class and found it to be manageable and the teacher is really responsive. You can take quizzes twice.
Worst professor ever. If you look up the stats you can see she only gave a couple A's in the entire class. When there are more W's and drops than actual grades you know there is a problem. Never had a professor that tried so hard to be difficult. Run Run Run!!!! This only reason I got an A is because I spent 40 hours a week on this class alone!
Same routine each week so it's easy to follow. This is a good GE for online, heavy on the reading and writing, responds fast to emails.
This class is awesome if you need a flexible schedule. Lots of assignments so plenty of chances to earn a good grade. Quizzes can be taken over if you don't like the score!
A lot of reading and writing, use of different source types, rubrics--basically an assignment most weeks and a quiz most chapters, with a final. It's a good class and a good teacher but you have to be organized and stay on top of the work. Teacher is responsive and gives good feedback.
Participate every week in a discussion and take quizzes--extra credit offered sometimes. Good class but it is a lot of work, lots of reading, posts, and replies. Sometimes Prof. Verlet let us redo assignments too.
The class is organized by modules with a quiz for every chapter and a discussion every one to two weeks. The instructor is fine, I have no special opinion on her, she was fair and followed the syllabus religiously. Pros: extra credit, retake quizzes, teacher is responsive. Cons: a lot of reading and writing.
Detailed class with many assignments, usually at least one each week with a great deal of writing required. If you enjoy history, you will probably like this course. It requires several hours each week to get through the reading and assignments. The instructor offered extra credit.
Good instructor and class. It's clear what is required, teacher responds to emails fast, extra credit offered. Good GE option if you are willing to put in the time. The quizzes aren't worth much. It's all about the writing assignments so this is good if you don't like traditional tests, bad if you do.
Stay on top of the assignments and make sure you have the books and you'll do well. Read her comments left for work and then make those changes and you'll do well. Honestly it's not a difficult class if you are willing to put in the time to read and write. Instructor is very organized and responsive.
It's a good class. I needed an enrollment code and Prof Verlet provided one. She's a tough grader but also very fair and you can know that everyone is held up to the same standard. This class is a good GE but you will have to work.
The class is western civilization and the reading incorporates a lot of material and ideas, but, we seem not to write about any topics in western civilization except for gender issues in every decade and incident of its existence. I've tried on assignments and got a D and not tried and got an A, completely arbitrary and hard grader. Don't Take!!!!!
Took this class last semester. It's time consuming, but, it offered the flexibility I needed with other commitments. Instructor is organized and fair. There was A LOT of reading and writing. Prepared me well for transfer to the UC system.
Too much reading!!! Too many sources to use for your essays very annoying
Great class, responsive teacher, lots of assignments. Extra credit offered and she responds fast to emails. Melissa uses grading rubrics for writing work. Projects, quizzes, final, TDs--usual online class format.
You'll have to read and write multiple chapters/threads each week in Prof. Verlet's six week class. It wasn't anything unexpected based on other condensed classes that I've taken but it seemed to catch some by surprise. Her syllabus is detailed, she communicated frequently, and she used a rubric to grade. Extra credit offered. Tough but fair.
This class is straight-forward if you follow the directions and the rubrics, however, this instructor is strict with due dates. Take it for your GE requirement!
Organized instructor and course. It's VERY very heavy on reading, writing, and online materials like Power Points and you'll have to participate in discussions every week. Interesting content and I recommend it overall.
Quizzes you can retake and a score rubric she gives in advance of each thread assignment. What more can I say? It's an easy A or B if you put in the time and effort.
Her class was interesting and the assignments were very creative. An area of improvement would be for her to look past initial impressions. I did not try as hard as I could have on my first assignments. After that, she always viewed my work as mediocre, no matter how hard I tried. Otherwise, she was very respectful, even in handling the bias.
This woman tries to make an easy class hard. She grades with a grain of bias and picks and chooses who will get what grade in the beginning of her class. Then proceeds to grade based on these biases. The subject is simple, the class should be easy, but she intentionally gives an excess of worthless readings that add no value to the course.
Responds fast to emails, uses grading rubrics....a solid class. The 8 week is class is VERY fast with a lot of reading and work due in a short amount of time. I knew it going in and the teacher reminded us of this but be ready--it's heavy but worth the effort.
I rated this prof "an easy A" because she provides everything you need to get it (rubric, feedback...) BUT you do REALLY have to work for it. There is a LOT of reading, videos, Power Points. It's time consuming and you'll do well if you take the time and effort. Never had a teacher before so responsive (fast!) to me.
Great class, teacher is fine. It's 100% online so you submit by a certain deadline but you can do it ahead in the week if you want. She uses these quizzes that you take until you earn the required score. I liked the learning tools of the class.
There's no "get ready to write" tag but that would be appropriate for this course. The class follows a consistent pattern. You read, watch videos, and view power points, look over different sources, then write a post and peer reply. There is an interview project that was the high point of the course for me since I interviewed a family member.
You're gonna get a B or a C. This woman is incredibly nitpicky and excessive in her assignments. During the summer session we write 2 papers a week with little feedback and impossible standards.
I honestly don't understand her grading rubric; one would think if you made great effort to address all of the requirements such as citations, page length etc. you would at least get a C on here papers. I honestly don't get this lady. What other History teachers would look at and say good job she looks at your work and nit picks stupid things
This class is challenging but interesting and its also very interactive. Prof Verlet assigns readings and writing assignments plus an interview. She offered us extra credit and she graded using a grade rubric. Its really kind of a no brainer to pass if you actually read the feed back she provides (every week).
My god there's a lot of writing. It's online and seems easy but there's like a paper due every week. Each paper requires atleast 3+ hours of reading, analyzing and getting quotes. If you have the choice don't take her
too much work. its an online class but it takes atleast 5-6 hours of your week. Don't take this stupid class
Good class, extra credit, threads due most weeks, teacher is responsive and grades pretty fast.
Took the 8week course. Papers, quizzes, discussion posts, a project. Not a bad choice for the gen ed or for majors really. Prof communicates quickly and seems to really want to help me understand the material. She was understanding when I had an emergency too.
a lot of work and she grades pretty tough but she is hard to communicate with and is not understanding at all. you can only use the sources she provided you with for your assignments and most of them dont even make sense, she uses powerpoints for only like two modules so you kind of have to teach yourself the only thing she really does is grade
Take for GE, it's all online. It's alot of reading followed by alot of writing, but I mostly enjoyed it.
All online. Strict in some ways but very manageable.
She teaches History but, in reality, it is an English composition class. She does not really test for history knowledge but more for format and properly quoted essays, the content appears not to be very important for her. I love the subject but it is hard to concentrate on historical events when all the pressure goes into how you quote others.
Extraordinarily thorough for an introductory level course. Was very time consuming during shortened Winter semester - over 450 pages of e-textbook! Prof Verlet is very responsive to messages, and you may need to ask her directly for in-depth feedback on essays than what she gives by default. Fair grading, but very straining for non-history majors.
I took the teacher online. Its a hard class if you don't keep up with the work. If you manage your time, the class is a great option. She responds really fast to questions and I got alot of feedback. We read and wrote every single week.
Doesnt have clear lecture slides and a very poor grader. Does not answer her email.
I took Professor Verlet's class online so I can't speak to in person classes. Online her course was easy to follow with clear criteria. She responded fast to my emails, usually same day and often within a few hours. Understanding and responsive, a solid general ed. choice. It is a good amount of work, very thorough but interesting.
I agree with another student that this class is more like an English Composition class as ALL the assignments are term papers. No kidding. I am talking about all assignments , exams and projects require bibliography and quotations. I got an "A" but put in like 40 hours a week as another student described.
I just wanna say how compassionate Ms Verlet has been to me and my situation. Its been a very tough semester with everything and she has gone out of her way to help me get books to use, turn in work, access resources for students. She does have high expectations but I'm greatful for this course, its preparing me well.
100percent online. Can't beat the flexibility. Teacher is organized. She responded to my questions quickly. Class was easy to follow, but I took the 6week course. It was not difficult, but it was time consuming. We covered thousands of years in 6 weeks!
I took her History 2 class online. She is very understanding, and will work with you if you are feeling overwhelmed. Her class is heavy on reading, but that is to be expected. Each week there is a discussion post. Posts have to use citation, multiple primary sources, and end up being essays. Extra credit is given if you exceed expectations on posts
To say this instructor tries to help is understanding things. Her class makes you work, but she really cares about her students. I was having a lot of trouble getting through and she worked with me. The class I'm taking has discussion post, tests, and quizzes.
SO KIND. Professor Verlet was acommodating for me. She will not let you out of things but she will work with you if you are having big problems and have trouble keeping up.
Her power points are for the most part useless and gives you zero chance to actually succeed. Her grading so harsh even if you clearly put a lot of time into your work she does not care.
Positives are that the instructor is understanding ad caring, helped me when I had a problem and gave me support. Grades with rubrics, like really detailed ones to show what to do to get a good grade. Responds pretty fast to emails, questions. Cons are that you have to buy the books and you will spend a lot of time reading and using them.
Love her or hate her, she knows her stuff. This class is organized, and it follows a routine that stays the same most weeks. I liked that and the effort the Instructor made to change up the assignments every so often. My least favorite was the tests, most was the threads.
Took her online. Her effort into the course was evident. She cared about students when COVID hit and made sure that we were aware of the resources the college had to offer. Her tests were exciting and thought provoking. Quizzes based off lecture and book so be ready to read. Threads were easy, if you put minimal effort in you'll do well. TAKE HER!
If your looking for a teacher who will challenge you BUT who is also very kind,it's right here. Proff Verlet is both of those things. Not gonna lie, it is NOT the easiest class you'll ever take, it certainly wasn't for me but it did become one of my favorites. She really tries to connect to the class to student lives. Take this class!
Good class, take her, she's helpful even with stuff not related to the class like financial resources if ur struggling.
Thorough class with many opportunities to work on your grade. Teacher is caring, class is easy to follow, it's totally online with no set schedule, multiple days to submit writing tests. Stickler for sources and citations, follow the rubric and you'll do just fine.
Supposed to be a History class, not AP English? So much writing everyday, practically writing a five paragraph essay for whats supposed to be a short post in discussions.
Summer classes were a lot of work in a short amount of time. Not going to lie, it was intense. But it was worth it to get my credits done, and I feel prepared for more college classes now. The complainers should probably get real about what's expected in short session classes.
Professor Verlet is okay if you're doing perfectly, but makes it really hard when you didn't do well on an assignment. The directions she gives as well as her rubric feedback are extremely vague, making it difficult to improve. I emailed her multiple times for help and she gave unhelpful and passive-aggressive responses, which were uncalled for.
all online, good Ge. summer classes are over quick but over fast
I did this class in summer. It was very work intensive, but I expected that. The course was manageable, the teacher a fair grader. Ms. Verlet was understanding but she does hold us to high standards, you will work hard.
I wasnt a big fan of Professor Verlet when I had her. Shes super picky on written assignments and even more picky about citations. It felt like the class written assignments were mostly about how well your citations were instead of the actual history parts. However, I did find her very creative.
Took it last year. I really liked the pacing and assignments. Professor Verlet required that we use our book and the documents for support and she gave us information on how to show where we used those (citing). I learned a LOT, so much that I recommended the class to a friend. We had a creative project due too. Solid.
Prof Verley is understanding, kind, she will wotk with you so you can improve. What I recommend is that you make sure to do reading if you want to succeed.
Professor Verlet is not a professor. Professor's should lecture, tie things together. Verlet has achieved the complete polar opposite. She does not teach, she assigns. Each day, you read a chapter of a textbook, and write an essay. Emailing Verlet will cause passive aggressive comments. My first B: 89.76%: refused to add 0.24%. (A second semester)
Took the HIST 1 and 2 sequence. HI02 was easier because I caught on. Good communication, uses rubrics, she's tough but I learned.
Straight shooter who responded fast to emails, like within an hour. I took this class as part of the History 1 and 2 sequence over the summer, it was one of the most intense things ever BUT I am proud of myself for that challenge and this teacher was supportive.
She is really kind, but if you aren't good at keeping up with reading or you cannot be disciplined in doing a ton of homework every week then this isn't the class for you. You pretty much have to go above and beyond the rubric every time for full credit. She is tough but if you're determined, it's no problem. Also, it is very interesting material
You have to work for it, you have to participate, if you do that this is a great class and teacher.
This person is not a teacher and she's not qualified to work with students she should be fired. She's very unprofessional and doesn't understand the material or how to communicate to students. A problem with her all started when I just made a simple correction of a mistake she made from that point on she had it out for me to rest of the semester
This class is organized and the teacher clear. She reached to us for those who didn't get their work in to help us. She grades with a rubric. The class was easy for me but then I like to read and write and also I'm very respectful. The teacher has high hopes for us students and she's helping to reach your goals if you put in effort.
Professor Verlet is truly one awful professor. Not only does she DEMAND the most out of her students, but the amount of work she does is also the bare minimum. She just simply posts a single discussion board once a week with the bare minimum amount of effort. Not only this but when grading, if things aren't her way then they're wrong. AVOID.
My advise is to take this Prof Verlet and pay attention to the grade requirements. She uses these rubrics, the same for threads but test ones change some. She flexed on some due dates too. It is all online but found her "approachable." Same types of assignments, so you can get better at them during the course.
Prof Verlet is kind, caring, and fair. It was hard to rate the difficulty. I found the class very challenging in the beginning, and then once I got the hang of the threads and got through the first test, the class was fantastic. This instructor made me feel like she really cared about me and my success in the class, went out of her way to help me.
Take this class if you can maintain a consistent schedule. Its going be hard if you try to wing it the day before stuff is due or if you don't log on much. The teacher is easy to work with if you put in the effort. It was not the easiest class I ever took but for sure one of the most organized with the most benefits, changed my world perspective.
Attendance is all online. No required zooms or anything but she'll meet with you that way to help you. I took this class in an excellerated format. The threads were more important in this class than in others I've taken. I liked it and found the teacher to be helpful and encouraging.
Course is organized. Prof Verlet will meet you on zoom if you ask, to go over stuff you might be confused by. It's middle of the road for difficulty.
I have had a few bad professors in my life, but this one was the absolute worst out of all of them. Barely teaches at all, basically just hands you a textbook and then expects you to write, and even if you do write well and include good work, there is always something wrong with it. Which is interesting because she barely does any work herself?
Pros: this professor is organized. If you do all of the assignments and look at the grading criteria, ask when you need help, you'll do just fine. She posts videos, her power pt presentations, interactive maps lots of ways to learn content. Cons: there's a good bit of writing and reading, not sure theres another way for online.
Gen-ed credit course for transfer, good option overall. everything online, incl office hrs. She's pretty flexible, helped me out twice.
Grades tough but on a curve. Keep up and it's a great course. Threads, quizzes, tests-the usual. Responsive instructor.
Prof Verlet goes above and beyond. She'll meet with you on zoom, she'll help you if you're having trouble with due dates, she's real supportive like that. It's a little tough because of the amount of work in the timeframe(I'm taking a half semester class)but she gives the feedback, then like she says, she wants to see that in your next work.
Teacher is nice. Two tests - midterm and final - both are multiple essays. Weekly discussions that are mini-essays. Be prepared to read!! Make sure to have MANY hours available in your schedule to study for this class, because you will fail otherwise. It is hard to get good scores on assignments, her grading is so tough.
I just came out of the 8wk class. There is a lot of reading and writing which I expected because it is the same as semester class but shorter length. Prof Verlet gave me more comments on my work than anyone has before and she gives xtra credit. Also she is very kind.
This class was really not hard. I have taken others that were very disorganized and where things weren't clear at all, and this class was the opposite of those experiences. There is a textbook, but there are other readings the professor provided for us. You have to use these if you want good scores, and she lets some work be turned in late.
Professor Verlet seems to really care about us her students. She brings in a lot of different perspectives and resources for assignments for example and gives us some choice sometimes. She's not the easiest grader I ever met but I do feel she is fair. She has been helpful and understanding in helping me above and beyond what many profs will do.
Feedback is not clear nor helpful, grading system is tough, does not respond on time within 24hours as she states would do, by the time you get feedback, you have submitted other homework due which may be incorrect as well.
Do the reading, look at the grade rubric she gives, and you'll do fine. Took faster paced class so it was more intense but manageable.
This class is very difficult to take online. Yes, she gives you a rubric, but it's often times very confusing and not clear. If you don't like reading, then this class isn't for you. Whatever time requirement that is given when signing up for the class, be prepared to ACTUALLY make that time commitment throughout your week.
I took this professor for an online class. Regarding coursework, the due dates are pretty confusing in the beginning as the same assignment must be submitted on two different occasions. All her major tests are super lengthy essays that take up a huge portion of your time and require excessive evidence for a decent score.
Manageable class, must put in effort to keep up with the class. Instructions are clear, read twice to be sure. Weekly discussion posts and peer replies are mandatory. There are quizzes every week or so. Professor is reachable just message her.
Extra credit, some choice assignments, uses rubric tho it can be a little weird to access from a phone...it's a solid class, well organized and in depth. Lots of writing, balanced in how we were graded with some weekly work, mid terms, final, quizzes.
Summer section, heavy work load. Prof was clear about this but it was jarring at first, makes sense though because its a whole semester in 6weeks. You'll definitely learn the history. Use the stuff she assigns, don't use chat gpt because that won't go well. You will have to do the work but I enjoyed it, it all came together near the end.
No lectures, expected to read documents and a textbook. Requires a lot of reading and writing. Her rubrics must be followed exactly at risk of significant penalty, although if you do the work and follow the rubric an A is easily achieved. Only 2-4 hours of coursework each week.
Professor Verlet runs a well-organized class. With some writing and reading, but manageable workload. Helpful feedback and extra credit opportunities. Unstuck study and other study tools can be useful alongside the textbook.
Avoid this professor if you can. Most discussions are AI'able, however, if you don't follow her rubric perfectly you will get points off. Discussions are worth your whole grade. This class almost ruined my GPA. Don't take this class if you want an A.
Prof Verlet is an amazing Professor who would go above and beyond for everyone of her students. Prof Verlet responds to emails and gives helpfully feedback.
You're going to need to do your own work. It's pretty obvious to other students like myself when someone is cheating. The discussions are about a quarter of the grade, quizzes and midterms are the rest. The teacher is solid.
Here is what you to do to get a good grade Verlet's course. Do the reading and do the threads. Email her if you get overwhelmed, she will work with you on duedates. Whatever you do,do not I repeat do NOT use chatgpt or random sites. She put up videos, slides, tedtalks so theres lots of ways to learn but its online so you have to put in the work.
All online--threads, quizzes, these chapter reading quizzes that we took through the textbook site. Lots of reading and writing. You'll learn the history and I really liked some of the assignments. Teacher obviously tried to connect the class to today which I appreciated.
Flexible with when you do the work, due most weeks by Sunday at the latest. Quizzes, midterm and final, discussions, some short papers. Assigned book is on a publisher site and it's pretty cheap compared to other classes I have taken.
Weeks follow similar patterns of quizzes, threads and reply, module closes with an exam. It's not a difficult class but you have to read and do the work.
Helpful and flexible, met with me outside of office hours, flexed on duedate when I had a situation. She's really responsive and kind. The class is organized and easy to follow.
I started taking this class because I needed to complete my history requirements. She takes AGES to grade. I have an English professor who grades 10x quicker than her! She disabled viewing our grades after our mid-term. I'm terrified I might need to get a W. Every other class I've taken is 10x easier than this one, and I'm majoring in nursing! RUN!
Needed to take a history class and saw her rmp reviews were okay. I don't like how I can't see my grade and she takes a long time to grade things. She grades harsh in my opinion and a lot of her feedback doesn't make any sense to me at all. I honestly think for a history class it could be very much improved even if it's online.
This professor uses rubrics, made herself available to me outside of normal office hours, and has given me feedback on every assignment. Like literally she has multiple courses and does all this. This is the 2nd class I took with her. She makes you read write and think, yeah, but that's why I'm in college so.....
Can't understand all of the bad reviews here. If you put in a good amount of effort and READ THE RUBRICS closely then this class isn't difficult at all. She makes her criteria very very clear constantly throughout the course, and her deadlines are super flexible. However, she is very tough on source use and peer replies, so try your best with those
