She's a good teacher, and I learned a lot, but she grades so harshly! Good luck getting an A in the class. Seriously, if you're planning on applying to a program that requires this class, think about taking it from someone more likely to give you a good grade.
Prof Wallentine is a quality teacher. She implements her professional experience into her teaching very well. This implementation makes the class very interesting and useful. Yes, she demands a lot and grades strictly; however, the work is well worth it.
She is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in writing and business . . . I took this class last spring and even though it was a two-hour class, she totally kept my attention the whole time even while we went over grammar. I loved this class!
She is one of the greatest instructors I've had at the university. She has a well of knowledge and skills almost too deep to measure. She teaches with great clarity. Class is a lot of fun. She expects a lot, but is a very fair grader. I highly recommend taking MCOM 320 from her.
Professor Wallentine is one of the best professors I had at BYU. She is smart, fun, and I would recommend this class to anyone who wants a great teacher and a great friend. Class is not difficult if you pay attention and she provides countless opportunities for extra help.
Wallentine is very intelligent. She's also funny, but in a very professional way. All of her assignments have real practical value. The grammar test was kind of hard, but you can take it twice. There are a lot of writing assignments, and there is a group writing assignment. Expect lots of red on your papers, even if you write well.
She is extremely intelligent. So incredibly nice with a great sense of humor. The class has tons of writing, but it's all practical business documents and useful. Just a wonderful, happy, helpful professor.
Prof. Wallenting is one of the best professor's I've had at BYU. I was a little worried about the class on the first day (and it wasnt an easy class by any means) but she is an awesom teacher and I learned a lot.
Professor Wallentine is one of the best professors I've had at BYU. She's extremely fair, and is more than happy to help with any questions for any of the assignments. The class wasn't easy by any means, but extremely practical and helpful. First day of class was pretty scary because of the amount of work required, but it was definitely worth it.
Probably the best professor I have had at BYU. Her class is hard but you actually learn valuable things in it which is nice for a change. She is very nice and helpful.
Professor Wallentine is one of the best professors in the department. She adapts the way she teaches the course to how the class best learns. The course requires time and effort, that is part of the business school, but she does an excellent job preparing students for the professional world.
She is one of the best teachers at BYU. I learned more from this class than any other. It is very time consuming and big projects/papers due every week. All are related to business and are things you will need to do in the future. Highly recommended. The grammar test is very hard, but you can take it twice.
Great class but not an easy A
AMAZING TEACHER! I didn't do so hot in her class, but she has a sincere desire to help students in every circumstance. Get a group together, and study with them on a regular basis. Stay on top of the reading if you want to survive.
AWESOME,a great friend to the student. Highly recommend. I was forced to take the class and I not only made it through the class but I learned things that will stick with me through life!
Wallentine definately makes you work for your grade, but she is the most supportive, helpful, thought provoking, inspiring, funny, approachable professor around. She is the hardest grader of all the MCOM professors, but her class is totally worth the extra effort. The skills I learned from her will put me ahead of the competition looking for a job.
This has been (yes I just used passive voice there...sorry Prof. Wallentine) one of the the best classes I've taken at BYU. Yes, she is a tough grader, but the class is worth the effort. This class is necessary for life in any field.
Very amazing! Yes, its tough but well worth it.
She is amazing! She teaches so well and it wasn't just about grammar and punctuation, but how to be successful in the business world. She explains things so well. My writing has improved tremendously because of her class. Not an easy A, but still worth all the effort.
GREAT teacher. I really improved my communication skills in this class. I was nervous to take because writing (and speaking) is not my forte, but the class is do-able if you put forth the effort. Take from Wallentine!
Professor Wallentine is incredible! I cannot say enough good about her-both as a teacher and as a person. She is clear, funny, thought provoking, and down right inspirational. She is one of those teachers that lifts you up and pushes you to do better and be better. Take this class from her if you can!
This class was possibly more applicable to real life than any other class at BYU. Professor Wallentine was brilliant at getting her message across. She's perfect combination of an English teacher and a businesswoman--classy, refined, and professional. I would take every class from her if I could.
She is a great Professor who really cares about the success of her students. She does a lot of fun activities to encourage learning and improving your business communication skills.
Prof Wallentine is awesome. She is a terrific professor who truly gets to know her students individually. The class itself teaches tons of skills used in future employment and the professional world. Great class. It's not easy though, you'll have your work cut out for you, but it is well worth it to take it from her.
Best teacher I have ever had in my life.. I hate homework, I almost hate school, but I loved her class, because everything she teaches is perfectly practical... And she's from Arkansas.
Wonderful teacher! I would highly recommend her! She is incredibly knowledgeable, and everything taught is incredibly applicable. She is very effective with class time and homework.
Prof. Wallentine is awesome! She is never puts herself above the students and really wants you to understand. There are quite a few assignments, but not too hard.
An assignment is due almost every class period. I believe the amount of work students complete for the class is equivalent to other classes. Wallentine is a very fair grader and explains concepts well. The grammar test and the final are uniform department wide, but she does a good job preparing you for both tests. The textbook is super useful.
She's not specific with feedback and often takes a long time to get back to you. Take perfect notes in class about what she says are the requirements for your assignments or you will lose points quickly, and sadly you still might... Honestly who always remembers to say (not post) every single little requirement they are planning to grade on?
A great professor who is very willing to help you out if you take the time to visit her during office hours. But be warned! She is a very critical (yet fair) grader and this class definitely isn't an easy A. My business writing improved dramatically through this course though.
Prof. Wallentine is a great professor. She made class interesting and knows a lot. Her grading was very difficult because no one in our section got an A. You pretty much got a B+ no matter what you did. Take the class if you don't mind getting a B+.
She really cares about each student. At the end of the semester, our class felt like more of a family than a random mix of students. I think that was because she is so individual with her students. She is extremely classy and has a dignified way about her... I would say I have learned more in that class than several other generals combined.
Guys, Prof Wallentine is the real deal. She achieves the perfect balance of being hard enough to help you improve your business writing, while being easygoing enough to joke around and get to know her students. I hate writing but her class had relevant assignments. The workload is rough, but it will be with any M COM teacher so take from her!
Love. Her. Legit, y'all. Heed the comments of the people here and take MCOM from Prof. Wallentine. She is a fair grader and cares about her students. Easily in the top 3 professors I've had at BYU.
Professor Wallentine teaches clearly and is very genuine. This class is a lot of work no matter who you take it from, but everything you learn is very useful.
Professor Wallentine is incredibly inconsistent and unfair with her grading. Every paper was a lottery on the grade. Her teaching style was fairly obnoxious, and the expectation was never clear in her class. I would highly recommend picking a different professor for MCOM 320.
Assignments aren't always clear. Hard to please with grading. Some assignments are clearly graded harder than others, which may feel to be out of the blue. Got screwed on group projects with people who didn't work hard. Curved down to a B even though I was literally right below an A- by like 0.02%. Nice person, dumb grading at times. Class is rough
Mrs. Wallentine is the best teacher to take MCOM 320 from. She is an amazing human being. I loved her lectures. We got out of class early almost everyday, no busy work, and she pushed back deadlines while also giving less assignments just because she is nice. I loved everything.
She is a very kind, reasonable and professional. She has about 6 hours she is available in her office each week, and she also responds to emails. She uses a free online textbook, and many quizzes are based on the reading. Everything she teaches is done in a way to promote student success and professionalism in the workplace.
This class was great because it teaches a lot of very useful real-world skills. Professor Wallentine cares about students and wants to help you succeed. I just wish her class was a bit more structured so that I knew what was wanted on assignments so I could be more successful.
Professor Wallentine is a great professor. I highly recommend this class if you're going into any sort of business. You learn real-life, hand-on things. There is a lot of homework, but if you put in the time it's very doable. Professor Wallentine makes the class very engaging, she uses videos and activities to keep things interesting and memorable.
Professor Wallentine Is really great. She wants her students to succeed but also expects you to put in the effort and isn't going to give you an A without earning it. That being said I've been pleasantly surprised in this class. Everything we learn is applicable in the real world.
Prof. Wallentine is great. Her lessons are very useful, she knows her stuff. My one complaint is that some of the assignments were kind of vague and it was hard to know what was due sometimes because the schedule on canvas was confusing. Overall, I would take this class again. Make sure to have your big assignments reviews before turning them in.
Great professor. The class was a lot of work, but she is very considerate and changes due dates if the class asks for more time. Only one test all semester, but lots of papers and projects. The textbook is online, and class attendance is recommended.
MCOM is a difficult class no matter who you take it from. Professor Wallentine taught a lot of real-life skills that I know I will use in my job. She also clearly cared a lot about her students. Getting an A is definitely difficult, but her grading criteria are clear so you could if you put in the effort.
Professor Wallentine was amazing! This class is extremely applicable and she made topics like grammar even interesting. She also was great at explaining difficult concepts and answering questions in an understandable way. Class isn't mandatory, but attending class is really important to do well on assignments.
I really was not a fan of the content of the course, so that was hard for me to overlook. That being said, Professor Wallentine is engaging and teaches from experience. She helped me to understand the value of the course material through personal experiences.
She is a really awesome professor. She cares a lot and really wants to help if you need it, but projects and assignments are a little disorganized so it is sometimes hard to know what the heck is going on
Professor Wallentine is an amazing professor. She cares about her students and wants to help her students become good communicators. Make sure to stay on top of homework and quizzes and always check due dates.
I'm not the best student & I'm pretty shy, but I still think this class was great. Prof Wallentine is so nice and still professional. She understands that you have other classes and a life, so work isn't overwhelming and she's willing to work with you if you need help or need more time. This class never stressed me out. Take her class!!!
She loves her job and really cares, teaches you how to write and present well
She is one of the most impressive teacher I know. Her class is very applicable and you can use what you are taught immediately. She also cares about her students and has tons of life/work experience to help anyone. I highly recommend taking her class if you don't choose to take this class online.
MCOM320 is a very hard class. There is a lot of paper writing, but the writing is for your benefit. The skills I learned are skills I will use for the rest of my life. Professor Wallentine is so fun to work with, and I feel I learned so much from her. I would recommend her to anyone who needs to earn their MCOM credit.
Professor Wallentine cares about her students success and is very willing to help inside and outside of the classroom. She helps make the class very manageable.
Professor Wallentine is a great professor. She cares about students and she does a great job at teaching difficult concepts. There were some frustrating assignments and sometimes I didn't feel like the criteria was clear for what she wanted. I think she purposely keeps rubrics vague so make sure to ask lots of questions in class.
Professor Wallentine is the kindest professor I have ever had. Her lectures are so interesting. Even though Mcom is known to be a mundane class, this was literally my favorite class of the semester. I would 100% recommend her to anyone!
Really enjoyed the course and appreciated the material. Very applicable to the real world. It was difficult to get an A on any assignments though. The instructions and grading rubrics were vague to the point that there's no clear-cut way to get a good grade on anything. Felt like the grades I got were very subjective.
Prof. Wallentine is awesome. She really knows her stuff, especially grammar and English. This class starts out kinda boring as it is purely grammar related but gets really interesting and applicable after 2 or 3 weeks. Grading is fair, has a good amount of projects that take time.
Prof Wallentine is a great teacher. I hate writing and basically everything this course teaches but she made it bearable and was super nice. She is always available to help you outside of class and really cares about students and their learning.
Professor Wallentine is one of my all time favorites. She has a fun sense of humor, and I felt the care that she has for her students. She KNOWS her stuff. Seriously so smart, I learned so much.
Ms. Wallentine is an excellent professor and she really knows her stuff. I recommend MCOM to anyone that might find themself in the business world. She is a tough grader, but the material is extremely practical and relevant. The grammar portion at the beginning is particularly brutal. Wallentine is insightful, easy-going, and a lot of fun.
Professor Wallentine is easily one of my favorite professors at BYU. She is hilarious and makes learning about business writing fun. The lectures were great, the grading was a bit intense but the only reason I got my grade was because I forgot to turn in 4 assignments. If you have to take MCOM I definitely recommend taking it from her. She is great
I LOVE her. She is an incredible professor and I have a ton of respect for her. She was super kind and compassionate when I came to her with some personal struggles and was also an incredible professor. She grades hard, but gives good feedback and is accessible for help.
She is really caring and gives good feedback on assignments which helps you to learn quickly. The class was somewhat unorganized, but the textbook is free which was really nice. The grammar is very difficult in this class which helps you to become a better writer.
Professor Wallentine's class was great! I felt that she did a great job at giving good feedback so you could learn from your mistakes (especially grammar errors). She also would go over common mistakes many times, which I appreciated. The class was slightly disorganized which was frustrating.
Awesome class, awesome professor. I would definitely take a class from her again. Because of COVID, the class was forced to be online, and she did a great job of being accessible and teaching in a difficult situation. Super considerate and willing to work with you. There is a lot of reading and writing, but it has been one of my favorite classes.
Professor Wallentine is great! The class itself was disorganized--I think that was just because she was trying to figure out Canvas and the class online.) There are quite a few different papers and projects and she grades harshly but your learn a lot. She was always willing to go out of her way to help you though. If you want help, you'll get it.
The class is a lot of work -- it is a 300 level business writing. I took it during Spring Term, so everything was shortened to half the time (made very ... action-packed weeks). Professor Wallentine really does want you to succeed, provides the resources, and gives rubrics and clear feedback. She is very sweet.
Professor Wallentine is a great professor! The class was definitely not the greatest organized, but that's because she was adapting it to be online with little notice. She is always available for help and understands the workload difficult. You definitely learn a ton in her class!
Prof. Wallentine was great! This class has lots of little assignments, but if you show up and do your work, you'll do fine. The online format had some issues, but Prof. Wallentine did a great job of handling the tech issues, which weren't even her fault.
Melissa Wallentine does a great job teaching the material and not wasting your time. I took the class in an online format, and there were some technical issues with Canvas, but those weren't her fault, and she tried her best to solve those issues. There is a graded activity for every class so its important to attend.
Shes a great professor, but I sometimes felt like the amount she discussed an assignment in class didn't always reflect how serious an assignment is. I also often felt blindsided by the feedback. The assignment description and rubric did not always reflect how thoroughly she would dig into your assignment.
Dr. Wallentine is a fantastic teacher! I enjoyed that she was very clear and efficient about structuring the class and the assignments were always engaging. I've ended up using and remembering things she taught in my life outside of class quite frequently!
Professor Wallentine really helped me to become a better writer. The grammar section is tough and you can lose points really easily, but if you put in the effort and learn from her you will do well! She was very willing to answer questions and help outside of class as well.
Professor Wallentine is such a great professor. She's very caring and helpful. She really wants you to succeed and makes time for her students. I highly recommend taking from her if you are taking MCOM.
Professor Wallentine was condescending, and unprofessional. Her class was probably my least favorite class in my entire BYU experience. I would highly recommend taking Mcom 320 from anyone, except her.
Professor Wallentine is well intentioned and wants to help everyone, but this class is full of tedious assignments that become overwhelming. She struggled with Canvas and I often didn't receive feedback on assignments until weeks after they had been turned in.
I don't know if it is her or the MCOM department, but this class sucks the joy out of life. She'll take off huge points for tiny things. Calm down! This isn't high level literary analysis. SOOO much busy work that she grades with a magnifying glass. Must not have much else to do with her time.
If you are hoping to take this class to learn a lot and get a good grade, take it from someone else. The average grade for a lot of assignments is a B/B+. She is just a very tough grader. My friend's paper is getting published in the Marriott Student Review and she gave it a B+. What a joke... Hop off your high horse
Prof. W herself is lovely, and the class is quite easy but it is full of busy work that matters not at all, especially if you already have a job lined up. I would definitely recommend taking it from her - even though she grades really harshly, the class is curved so it doesn't matter.
This doesn't need to be a hard class, but Prof. Wallentine added a lot of extra work compared to other MCOM professors. You have to be able to read her mind in order to not get docked points, but her mind is an enigma--the classic prof that HAS to dock points no matter how good a paper/project is. Lots of confusion because of problems with Canvas
Professor Wallentine is a great lecturer. Her class was always informative and she let us out early all the time. She is really succint and to the point. However, she is a tough grader. Triple check your work, and have others look over major assignments if you want an A. Canvas is AWFUL. I wish she would not use it because it caused so many issues
TAKE IT FROM PROF. WALLENTINE. You won't regret it. The class is a decent amount of work, but it's so useful. Lectures are amazing, and I have so much respect for her. She's very understanding and will work with you if you are having trouble in class.
Demanding class, projects are a lot of work. Grading was vague and you end up losing huge amount of points on formatting mistakes & technicalities that weren't clear in the first place. You will end up losing points just out of not knowing enough about what to do. I love the professor, she is genuinely awesome. But the class is frustrating.
Professor Wallentine herself is amazing. She's clear, professional, and cares about her students' success. Unfortunately, the course is torturous. Despite how great she is, the nature of the class is comprised of pure nit-pickiness, absolute perfection, and unattainable standards. She's obligated to follow this dogma, so prepare for less than an A.
Don't take it from her. The class was helpful and demanding but she made it worse. Incredibly unorganized and everyone I knew was confused for every deadline. She doesn't really explain anything unless you specifically ask and isn't clear on anything. Tough grader. A shame because the skills are important but the teacher wasn't of much help.
She is a very nice lady and definitely knows what she is talking about. The class is challenging and requires a lot of time. Some weeks seem really heavy and others not so much, so work on assignments for the class even if it seems like there isn't anything immediately due. She is very willing to help if you ask her.
Tough class but Prof Wallentine gave good feedback and was accessible outside of class. There were several difficulties using canvas with assignments being updated randomly in the middle of the week, many dates changed without announcement, etc, grading rubric not matching the assignment point value, etc.
I took this class online so I didn't have any personal interactions with Prof Wallentine, but the lack of organization made this class unbearable. There were so many issues with Canvas that I had to email the TA at least once a week to get things fixed. She is an incredibly harsh grader and I found some of her comments on my work to be quite rude.
She is an awesome professor and as long as you are willing to put in effort, this class is a breeze. There are a few assignments that make up most of your grade. A business article, grammar exam, and a group project. The grammar exam is tough, and the group project depends on the group you get, but overall this class is a really good one.
Prof. Wallentine is a nice enough but her class is so disorganized that I had to constantly email her to know what I needed to do. She will go MIA during the weekend, which is unfortunate, because all assignments are due then. She is an incredibly nit-picky grader and unless you are perfect, good luck with getting a perfect score on any assignment.
Professor Wallentine is very nice but this class was so frustrating. The whole point of the class is to learn how to communicate professionally yet class communication was a mess. Canvas was disorganized and she rarely answered emails. It just felt ironic to be preached to about professional communication by someone who communicated so poorly.
This is legitimately the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take this class, you will be miserable and confused for the whole semester. Canvas is unorganized, heavily weighted on poorly explained grammar lessons and the TA is was MIA the whole semester. Please do not take this class.
Unless you know how to read minds don't take this class. You will follow every guideline and line in the rubric and she will dock you based on her personal opinion.
The worst academic experience I have ever had. Looking back at the ratings I was shocked she had such a high rating, but after looking further I realized all the recent reviews are bad. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE
Grades are not based on the rubric. She rarely gives anything higher than a b-. I am a horrible test taker, but I found myself begging to take tests so I could have some kind of unbias evaluation grade.
THE WORST CLASS YOU WILL EVER TAKE. It would be better to go another semester than to be forced to take this class with her.
Be ready to be depressed all semester. She is the literal worst. I had questions about every single assignment because of how unorganized it was, but it takes her 3-5 business days to respond
Her class itself is pretty easy, but what makes it awful is the grading. We wrote a flawless report for a consulting assignment and she docked us points because in our email we said "let us know if you have any questions" because it seems condescending! This is ridiculous. No comments about the actual content, just very opinionated
Shes an extremely harsh grader, but not by what's on the rubric, just on her mood of the day. Never got above an 80 on an assignment she graded. I began begging for tests just so I could have an unbias grader.
TAKE THIS CLASS FROM LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE.
Very unprofessional. She will send emails with terms like "lol" or "lmk" or start a sentence with a lowercase i. Then will turnaround and dock literally 20% for a minor error like having an extra space between words
her rubric for the final project says "I am not giving you specifics here you know what to do" and then takes off points for ridiculious things that are totally opiniated
I have never had a worse professor in my entire college experience. Only wants to give bad grades, will never give anyone above an 80 and the class isn't curved. I've talked to people who have taken this class from other professors and they all sound better than wallentine
I took ECON 110 my first semester of college and I thought that would be hard. Turns out it ain't got nothin on wallentine. Assignments all seem like busy work, but she grades them like the president of the united states is going to be reading them. Won't care that the logic is all sound if there is one grammar mistake you're toast.
There are plenty of other teachers for this class, please take it from them. I cried myself to sleep over this class. I would spend easily 20 hours a week on one assignment and then she would give me a C because she felt like I could have phrased one paragraph differently
We had a team project where we had to meet with her at the very end to go over our progress. She said it looked really good and had no comments...then gave us a 70 on the assignment. This is what the whole class is like
TAKE FROM ANYONE ELSE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
I felt like no matter how hard I worked, not matter how much work I put in she is just intent on giving students bad scores.
This is a very hard class and she is very particular with grading, but her availability is awful. She has office hours for 30 minutes a week and it takes her over a week to respond to emails
BYU has lots of hard classes, but I have always felt that they at least give you the tools to do well. Professor wallentine doesnt care about her students and just wants to give bad grades and laugh at misplaces modifiers
This class is a joke. You spend all semester getting bullied by professor wallentine's comments on your assignments, then the final is to write a report on how this class changed your life.
Very unclear Canvas set up and the grading is frustrating
I agree with what everyone below me has said!
I agree with many of the other comments. Seriously one of the hardest classes I have ever taken (not because the assignments are hard, but because you have to try and ready the professor's mind.) I found several mistakes in quizzes and Canvas and had to fight for points back on nearly every quiz because the key was wrong. Super frustrating course.
This class is incredibly hard because you have to fight and claw for every single point. For every assignment I would following the rubric and she would grade us on things that were not there. For example, I lost points for using Chicago endnotes instead of permalinks, but the rubric specifically said to use chicago. never got those points back
Never in my life have I experienced the agony, anxiety, and loneliness that I have felt in this MCOM class. I advise and strongly encourage all those reading this message to refrain from taking this course. Wallentine is low key super funny though. Might be one of my favorite professors. But at the end of the day, she sucks. Don't take this class.
My least favorite class I have taken at BYU. Never have I spent more time, or effort, doing meaningless assignments just to get an 18/20 because of a grammar error. Don't take MCOM from this professor. I am so happy this semester is over. She was low-key inspirational though. Overall though, I wouldn't ever take this class again, glad it's over.
Just don't take this class. She is so nit picky that whatever you do she will find reason to give you a C. I put my best work into this class and I've never gotten a worse grade. All of her comments on my assignment were opinion based on how I could have worded things. Just don't take this class.
DO NOT TAKE! This class is made much harder than it needs to be by the professor. Everything is just busy work and the grading is awful. She is also very hard to contact, which is frustrating because almost every assignment needs clarification.
Super disappointed in this class. It is extremely disorganized which is ironic for a class that focuses on organization. Quizzes were blank when attempted at times, and grading is insanely petty. Every little mistake in grammar and penalized in every assignment and aspect of this class. This class demands perfection to get an A. DO NOT TAKE
honestly, if you get to know her, she's an awesome person. I have had a tough semester and have been open and honest with her and she has given me extensions on all my assignments. She's a really great person and she's funny. Super understanding, passionate about what she teaches, and a genuinely good human being. there is a lot of homework due.
Honestly, the most pointless class I have ever taken at BYU. The professor grades everything way too difficult for a virtually meaningless class. Plus the grammar exam is ridiculously stupid and difficult. Overall, just a frustrating and time-wasting class.
Tough class with picky grading, but professor can be surprisingly funny. Use Unstuckstudy and stay on top of assignments to succeed.
