She's a grad student teaching the seminar and lab section. She is EXTREMELY helpful and always gives out tips and hints during seminar. She explains things very clearly, so go to her review sessions for the lab exams! She's pretty funny too, so take her if you can.
She is pretty easy, everything is off the lectures, but book helps to understand a little bit more. She sends out practice test before each exam, and they are exactly like the test. She is kinda hard to understand sometimes because her accent, but she is a tiny sweet lady that is somewhat funny (or tries to be). Helps if preparing for ochem class.
Awesome teacher. She gives you plenty of hints before quizzes and strongly encourages you know the flowcharts for the experiment. She always jokes around in class and is very approachable.
She is very easy going and is very helpful. She explains concepts well and will go over it if you don't understand. She wants her students to succeed, but she doesn't grade easily.
easy to understand. explains materials clearly. got charged for lab equipment since she wasn't clear on what the service center was going to charge us for. sometimes i think she secretly hates some (good) students for their relatively low yield.
I struggle with Chemistry A LOT. It's probably the only subject I just can't understand, but Melody does a fairly good job at teaching it. However, the examples she puts on the board are 5x easier than the problems I had to do in lab. Quizzes are HARD. Most people got C and D's on them. Midterm was all free response, but final is multiple choice.
I absolutely loved taking this class with Melody. She's such an adorable professor and she knows how to engage her students. Usually I hate taking science classes because all the teachers are fairly boring but Melody definitely knows how to keep things interesting. Attend the lectures & you'll have an easy A.
She cares. She really cares about helping students who deserve to pass, pass. Go to every lecture, they're informative and attendance is vital to pass this tough class. She's helpful, fun and I can't say it enough, caring. Chem 1A is tough at SJSU, if you've got Esfandiari, it's your best bet at passing. I hope I get her for 1B.
She is one of the best professors you will ever have for chemistry. Her lectures are never boring, she has a lot of humor because she's a grad student. Her helpfulness is unbelievable and she will do anything she can to make sure you understand the content. Her lectures are easy to understand and her fairness amongst everything is superb!
Hands down the most caring and down to earth professor on campus. There is a huge amount of material covered in the class but she does her best to make sure each and every student understands. Online quizzes are tricky but prepare you well for exams. Not an easy class but with her you will have a much easier time with the material
There is no such thing as an easy Chem 1A class, but put the effort in with Esfandiari, and you'll pass. She's friendly, caring and passionate about the subject. Her explanations are clear, and her grading is fair, but most of all she's willing to help. Use her office hours for any uncertainty. The best thing a teacher can do is care ,and she does.
She is really nice, friendly and helpful. However I hated Chemistry as a subject and failed the class, but I loved her as a teacher so much, she lectures well, pretty chill, and approachable. I wish I tried harder, but she wont be lecturing again next semester. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN especially if you hate chemistry.
She is one of the best chemistry professor at SJSU. She is a very good lecturers but her exams are not easy so you have to study hard. She is fun to talk to during class and funny during lectures. You will definitely enjoy the class.
Dr. E is an awesome professor. She's really cool and approachable. The material is pretty easy to understand. Lectures are straightforward, take good notes and you'll ace the test. Since its intro to chem, you shouldn't have a hard problem passing the class, but if you don't understand, go after lecture or go to her office hours. Take her!
I have only shown up to her lecture 4 times... first day, 2 midterms, and final exam. I passed the class with a solid A. This doesn't mean you can do what I can do because you have to discipline yourself to study if you don't plan on going to lectures, but it is passable if you don't. Lots of tips, reviews, and guidelines through Canvas.
One of the best Chemistry instructors I have had. Very clear in her teaching. She has devised techniques to make abstract and ambiguous concepts in Chemistry an absolute Joke( super easy). Loved her.
Honestly, this is no easy Chem-1A class because it's a course that covers a lot of new information, but i can assure you that as long as you attend to all the lecture and do your pass, you'll definitely pass. this class has 3 exams and a final & 6 quizzes. the exams are hard, but she prepares you well for them..I LOVE HER SO MUCH 3
Best teacher out there. Just. That. Simple.
Dr. E is an amazing professor! Helped you when you needed it and is a very clear and lively lecturer.
Probably one of the best professors I've had at San Jose State so far. Really cares about her students and wants all of them to pass. She would have over 30 students come to her office hours and we would have to meet outside because we would crowd the hallways and she would continue to assist all of us as best as she could right before a test
Melody is an awesome professor. I had her for organic chemistry lab. When our labs are super long and difficult, she would teach us techniques and efficient ways to execute high product yield. She is very attentive and approachable for help. She is a fair grader and most importantly, she use to be a SJSU student--so she understands.
Super helpful during lecture! I have never had a professor so clear on explaining and giving examples of the material she's teaching. Probably my favorite professor so far
Dr.E is extremely pretty and her lectures are just as entertaining. Our class had a blast learning chem, even if the actual work was difficult. If you study a good amount of time out of class, you will be fine. Take the workshops, you can miss quite a few days, and if you take it not for the credit just drop by and learn the material REALLY HELPFUL
Dr. E gives detailed lectures, really helps the students and goes over the material pretty well. As long as you listen in class, spend some time outside doing practice problems, you're all set. She gives extra points on the midterms and the final as well. What really helped was the lab test reviews, really cares for her students!
Hands down, the best chem professor! Chem is very hard subject, i thought i was going to fail! On the first exam i got a D but with her help, i ended up passing her final with an A! She really cares about her students! Go to her office hours and get help! She will try her best to make you understand! I LOVED HER CLASS!
I took a class from Melody elsewhere but she was the best teacher! She is clear, fun, caring, and very smart. I hated chemistry until I took her organic chem class. I can say it was the best class I have ever taken. If I hadn't already had so many units in my major, I would change. She is great at explaining the concepts, and the book is spot on.
Dr. Esfandiari knows what she's talking about and is very passionate so it's helpful. She has office hours and encourages students to stop by for help. I think most people found this class hard. It's really important to study and do practice problems. Going to workshops can help prepare you for tests and quizzes.
Lectures are clear and concise. She explains lessons clearly and will give plenty of examples to help. Always answers questions during office hours. Show up to lectures and do practice problems and you should be fine. Only problem is that there's a short time limit for exams overall great teacher and easy class if you study
Professor E is my new favorite teacher. She expects a lot of participation from you. The class isnt hard if you do the work. She gives a ton of chances for extra credit. She has a great way of explaining things and relating them to everyday life so that the info actually sinks in. Her fun sarcastic sense of humor makes her a joy to talk to.
Doctor E makes her lectures fun, but is also very clear with what you need to learn. Her style of teaching is different as she comes in just laying down all the material fresh from her head going from one topic to another, sometimes it confuses her but she gets around it and is more than capable to fix any confusion. She is always willing to help.
Her lectures are interesting and easy to follow. There a lot of math involved than theories and terminology. She gives ec in the exams, easy to approach and gives you practice quests before an exam. You would be lucky to have her for your semester since the other lecturer that taught spring 2015 was horrible, hard to understand and gave tough exam.
Awesome professor very funny and attempts to make learning chemistry fun. Always willing to help her students and encourages them to visit her during office hours. She even gives extra credit! However, some of the material is difficult to understand I had to go to tutoring a few times but if you put in the effort you'll pass.
Dr. E is great! I took Honors Chemistry in high school and got a C+, but got an A+ with Dr. E. Lectures are funny, entertaining and easy to understand. Labs are pretty bland but easy. 1 term paper (easy), 1 lab report (easy), 6 quizzes on canvas, 2 midterms, 1 final. Does review before test and gives out really helpful study guides. Super easy A.
As a transfer student who aced their CC chemistry class, this was a waste of time. That being said, it was ridiculously easy. Paid attention in high school chem? You'll probably breeze through. Never opened my textbook, waste of money. Quizzes were online, 5-9 questions. Exams in the auditorium? EXCRUCIATING. She's a great professor though. So...
Super nice and funny professor. Clear while explaining the chapters. I actually understood what she was teaching. Open for questions, and is very helpful when people were confused. She didn't move on until everyone was confident with what we were learning. Sometimes gives extra points on the exams. Quizzes are online. Don't need a textbook to pass
She's hilarious and easy to talk to. Study your notes and understand how to do the math. Please make some friends and help each other out. The exams aren't really that bad however there are some tricky questions so read carefully. If you have a strong background in chemistry then don't worry much, if not then pay attention in class and ask question
Dr. E is great. She makes everything easy to understand and always provides clarity. I shouldn't have bought the textbook though because it was expensive and I never used it. As long as you buy her lecture booklet and the lab manual you'll be fine. Do the practice problems because they'll save your life.
TOTALLY AWESOME!! She's quirky, funny, super smart and enthusiastic about teaching. She's great at office hours too. She'll explain things until you get it. She'll simplify the materials until you get it. She tells you what she expects out of you and keeps her words. Lots of help with extra practice problems and quick to reply on email. 3
Melody made the lectures fun even though I had the class at 8:30 in the morning. She is clear on what she wants us to learn and makes the topics relevant to our lives. She is really approachable and loves teaching 30B over 1A. If you miss her class, she suggests Khan Academy but ended up learning more than needed. Her exams are easy with notes.
Taking her class right now and I have no clue what is going on. We have a $200 textbook that we do not touch and I have yet to have a lecture that makes me actually think about concepts. The only tool we have to study with are the quizzes and sparse notes. I will keep this updated monthly but as we hit week four this is my rating.
The test are tough if you don't study! She is an amazing teacher and go to lecture because its easier to understand when she explains it.
Dr. E is a great professor. She makes class entertaining & she cares about her students. She's approachable, & gives good feedback on lab reports. Although she is nice, don't expect an easy A. She expects her students to learn the material. I wish I could've taken more of her classes!!! If you get a chance, TAKE HER.
Great Professor! Made chemistry much better! She is hilarious and makes learning fun! She is very organized and encourages for us to take workshops which was a great idea! 100% recommended her!
Dr Esfandiari is one of the best teachers I've had in a long time. She is so sweet and funny. She's younger and feels approachable and is available to answer all of your questions. If you get the chance to take her class, do it! We need more teachers like her.
Esfandiari is a really great teacher. She's very thorough and has a great sense of humor as well! Her tests are probably one of the more easier CHEM 1A tests, as its all multiple choice. She's very informative and gives out past midterms to help you pass. She also has a nice sense of fashion too.
Dr. Esfandiari's class is awesome! She's a very intelligent professor whose lectures are clear and easy to follow, and she makes them entertaining and light-hearted with her jokes. Her class is based mainly on three midterms, a final, and online quizzes, but they really aren't hard as long as you put in the work. I love her class!
Great teacher, as long as you have a basic understanding of Chem from High school and a basic understanding of algebra, you should be fine. Very energized and keeps lectures entertaining. 3 Big tests and many online quizzes.
Fantastic!! I could never understand Chem, but after her lectures, I really understood it. She takes the time to make straight-forward examples, and practice tests so that you are always prepared for the exams. She cares about you as a student and really wants you to do well. She will always answer questions and is happy to help. Would take again!
Chem is a difficult subject, but she makes sure to explain every concept in detail so everyone can understand. After that it is up to you to practice a lot before exams, which are always really hard. She is super sweet and engaging. It's possible to understand chem with her lectures.
This professor is amazing. Even with not being able to make a bunch of my classes, I could still understand the concepts. I actually wanted to come to class because she explains everything beautifully. Her tests are a little bit hard, not because of concepts but because of the sheer volume of questions. Overall an amazing and hilarious teacher!
Amazing Professor, I enjoyed coming to her class, great teaching style and sparked my interest in Chemistry. Recommend taking her, you will learn a lot
Chem 1A is a pretty hard class since not everyone will get the materials . Esfendiari breaks down the materials as easy as possible for the class to understand the materials better. I would also suggest signing up for workshops just incase if you think that you might struggle with the materials.
I wasn't a big fan of Chemistry so I did alright. Make sure you show up to lecture every day. She's a really sweet and approachable professor. Pretty funny but she has a slight accent. She gives a decent amount of extra credit on exams too.
WONDERFUL LECTURER. She does many practice problems on the whiteboard which are rather similar to what you see on exams. Everything she writes on the board is relevant to the class, and she's very organized. She also really cares about us, even dedicating whole lectures to doing review for exams (lab exams too, sometimes).
I went into CHEM 1A with having very little experience with chemistry-- in fact, I had struggled with it in high school. Professor Esfandiari got me to like chemistry a lot! She adds points to each of the three exams, and the final isn't difficult either. As long as you go to lectures and study a moderate amount, you should be perfectly fine.
Melody gives amazing lectures! I recommend her. Hard to believe that test avgs are 60s and 70s range (C-). Her exams are straightforward as long as you study. I received As on all of them. She gives lots of practice problems and knows how to be a phenomenal professor. Sometimes she 'tries' to be funny..... but Overall, practice& attend lecture!
Work for your grade! Its an easy class as long as you practice the problems she gives during lecture. Very sweet teacher. there is no partial credit on exams. points are 3.3 per multiple choice question, which is alot.
Esfandiari had amazing lectures. She made her self available as much as possible for students to ask questions. We only had a few small quizzes and 3 main exams. If you don't do so well then it is hard to get your grade up. Make sure you study on your own because there is not a lot of time in class for her to go over everything.
Amazing professor, would take her class for all chemistry classes if I can. She is amazing and made me love chemistry when it was a nightmare for me. Take her class and study well.
I've only had two teachers so far. Melody is my second favorite. My most favorite is batman. Meow
I was in her lab class, but she lectured before and after lab whenever there was extra time, which was a great help. Always works practice problems to make sure we get it, explains the concepts great. Wouldnt have passed the class without her.
Dr. E, is very sweet. funny, chill and relaxed. dont take her for granted though. you can have fun with her, get your work done and stay on top of things. shell let a few late assignments go by if your doing well in the class
Dr. Esfandiari is a lovely lovely woman and I LOVED having her. She taught my Chem25 class at foothill and she was so sweet and inspiring. Definitely gonna miss her. Super funny, AWESOME teacher, and made sure the entire class understood before letting us leave every time.
Best professor I have ever had. I had her for lab but she still helped us with lecture content on the side. Always gave mini lectures before lab and prepared us for the lab quizzes and exams which helped a lot. Her office is also always open for those who need help. Without her I wouldn't have passed or taken an interest in chemistry. I recommend!
Overall favorite professor I've had thus far. Dr. E is a great at making difficult concepts easy to understand. I wish she taught all chemistry sections, definitely would recommend Dr. E for chem!
Her teaching style is amazing! She makes everything clear and uses good metaphors, examples, and practice problems to make sure you understand the concepts. Every lecture counts so it's important not to miss them! As long as you practice with the practice exams, quizzes, and lab manual, you'll be fine.
Dr. E is an awesome professor! She puts a lot of effort into making sure students understand the material. She does a lot of practice problems in class and sends out practice exams for both Lab and Lecture. Her exams can be difficult, but she is willing to add an extra few points to the entire class when attendance is good. So go to class!
I took Dr. E last semester for chem 1A, I miss her so much! She is an amazing professor, her lectures are understandable and class is interesting. I wish she taught chem 1B :(
Prof. Esfandiari is great at lectures, explains clearly, does many practice problems to make sure everyone knows how to solve problems. She does not really use the textbook.
Dr. E was so great. Her lectures are engaging, whats expected of students are very clear, labs can be graded a little harshly but still fairly. Shes very considerate w her students. Overall a great professor.. shes really funny too
One of the best Chemistry professors ever! She respects her students, and provides great lectures. She is very specific about what to study for each exam. As long as you attend a workshop, complete practice problems you should get by. One of the few professors on campus who truly cares about students who try their best!
If you want to actually learn chemistry, take her class. Lectures are very clear, and exactly what you need to know for the tests. Go to class, take notes, and you'll never need the textbook. If you're confused, ask for help. She really cared about her students. One of my favorite professors of all time.
very helpful and approachable. melody was very responsive to emails and she would always have handouts detailing instructions on how to choose a topic for the presentation and the final paper in the class. I thought this class was going to be stressful, but she lays out the deadlines and very little is needed to be done outside of class.
Melody is the best professor I have ever had during my time in college. Her lectures are amazing, she gives you only necessary information and breaks everything down. You are only graded on about 5 quizzes, 3 midterms and 1 final. As long as you go to lecture and study the lecture notes you can get a B or an A in the class.
She will make you print out so many papers and does not specify things in lecture or lab she works too quick and assumes everyone understands.
DO NOT take her for lab, all she does is grade papers and doesn't even go over a brief introduction of lab before we do it. So, my lab partner and I were left with not knowing what to do and she grades roughly on lab reports. I felt like she didn't really care when it came to lab and gives very vague answers to my questions.
She's a good teacher, I like her teaching style. She's also funny. She looks like Camila Cabello, like, high-key. If you see her, please tell her this. Thank you
The best professor you'll ever have. If you don't do well it's your own fault b/c she teaches you everything you need very clearly. Lab can be unfair but she is not responsible for it. Her lectures are clear, concise, & engaging. She adds extra points to exams if attendance is good . She is truly amazing and I'm grateful she was my professor.
I never thought I would look forward to walking into a chemistry course.. that all changed with Melody. Not only is she hilarious & super intelligent, she is an AMAZING professor. She will teach you all the little tricks to help navigate through chem, gives study guides, makes her points clear & will have the whole class laughing, awesome prof
I took Dr.E for three chemistry classes (1A, 30A, 30B). She is a great, caring teacher. Her lectures are mandatory; she breaks down the material very well and it's easier than reading the book. If you are confused, go into office hours! I know it's a pain, but I promise it will be helpful!
Dr.E is one of the best professors I have seen in SJSU. She takes college-level chemistry and simplifies it to elementary school chemistry for you. Amazing lectures and hilarious af. The only difficult part is the labs. Prepare in time for the labs and attend her classes regularly and you will be all good!
Prof Esfandiari is super fun! I took her for CHEM 25 at Foothill, and her lectures are always lively. She does move at a very quick pace though. You'll mostly only have a minute to do a problem that takes 30 seconds to write down. Her exams can be a little difficult or relatively easy if you understand the material. Best CHEM teacher just KEEP UP!
Dr. E is one of the best lecturers at SJSU. She cares if you can understand the material and questions in order to make sure you understand. There is practically no homework, except take home problems which are relatively easy. She takes huge chemistry concepts and turns them into simple equations that is easier to comprehend. Recommend 100%
Incredible lecturer. Learned so much from this class and didn't open the textbook a single time. Attendance is definitely key in order to pass since her lectures really help you understand the information. She's a great teacher and is super funny. Some of the stuff is hard, but if you put in the effort you should be fine.
So far, the best lecturer at San Jose State University. Gives clear explanations into solving each problem. An easy A if you pay attention to her lectures and spend minimal time at home studying.
BY FAR THE BEST PROF. AT SJSU! I absolutely love her teaching style, & her lectures are so easy to follow. However, make sure to show up to them bc lectures are extremely critical to pass the class. If you study for the quizzes/tests from in class practice problems (which she gives tons of) you'll do absolutely fine. Recommend making a study group!
Prof. E is amazing. Where do I begin. She creates an atmosphere in class that makes you not want to miss lectures. Not only because shes able to explain the concepts so clear anyone can get it, but because she does it with wit and humor. Im only allowed so much in this space to talk here so Ill just say, best professor Ive ever had.
I've never met such a great lecturer that makes class so engaging like Dr. E. No textbooks are needed for her class. Her lectures are easy to follow as long as you show up to class, listen, and write your notes! Exams are based on examples she provides, so review and practice those. Make friends to study along with, it'll make your experience fun.
We bought a textbook that we did not use it at all. It is hard to contact and find Melody via canvas. Although she has a great lecture, her exams are hard (our class avg is 60 to 65 percent). Also, she does not care if you are sick for any exam. Some of my friends are changing their major after this class because they think chemistry is hard.
DR.E IS AMAZING! One of the best professors I have ever had. Dont buy the textbook or the lecture booklet only the lab booklet. She is really great at teaching, her exams are usually tricky and u run out of time but if you give a good 3-4 hour study ses before you wont have a problem. I attended workshop and got a a+ on every test, ATTEND WORKSHOP!
One of the best. Shes funny and caring about her students. She makes jokes that are appealing and if she gets good participation (from jokes and lessons) she gives out extra points. Shes really understanding with her students and really wants you to learn. She teaches clearly and at a good pace.
Dr. E is a fantastic professor. She is gracefully breaks down concepts in lecture, explaining them step by step and then reinforces them with practice problems to ensure understanding. Dr. E is fair, has a great sense of humor and is engaging in lecture. She's approachable and I would be happy to have her as a professor again!
Took 1A and 1C with her. I haven't had any problems with any of general chemistry subjects but with 1c. However, Dr. E helped me understanding the materials so that to get through the course. Also, she gives many chances to boost your grade up and is generous to the grades while she wasn't on the first exam.
Dr. E is amazing! Her lectures are packed, but she makes stuff easy to understand. She has a sense of humor, which makes the class/subject less intimidating and you actually look forward to lectures. She also responds to emails super fast!
Dr E was super fun and energetic. Kept the clas interesting and ended up being a pretty easy class. Im not sure what I learned exactly but I got the grade I needed!
Does not use powerpoint, so if you don't take notes, you can't go back. Good at lectures, but told us we don't need to use textbook because her lectures would prep us for exam. Appears laid back, but when it came to exams, NOTHING like her practice exams. Said to do practice exams/read lecture notes then we will do well on exams. NOPE Misleading.
Professor Melody is a great teacher. She explains the chapters very clearly and makes you do a lot of practice problems in class. Her exams are hard and she does not drop your lowest. She says she wants everyone to pass her class, but she doesnt help you out to reach the grade you desire.
Super fun class. Don't skip class because she teaches through lectures, but they're super helpful and she's hilarious so it works out. She's really thorough with her explanations and tries her best to make her students pass. Her tests are okay, not too difficult and not too easy either. Just make sure to study and take the workshop.
Hands down, the best stem course professor at SJSU. Lectures were straightforward and prepare you for the exam. Her personality and passion makes the course much more enjoyable!
Dr. E is an amazing professor I can honestly say she is the best professor I have ever had. She does not use powerpoints so you do need to attend lecture to write down notes but she provides practice problems throughout her lectures to make sure we understand the material. She is also hilarious so class is always entertaining! THE BEST EVER!
I am definitely not the best at chemistry, but Dr E made this class bearable! She gives off cool mom vibes that doesn't try hard to be funny. You can tell that she is passionate about chem since she makes jokes often. Super helpful by providing practice exam materials. I would recommend making a friend in lecture to study with
Very great and thorough professor. No powerpoints or anything of that matter, all of the material is spoken and written during class. She really explains difficult concepts in a very easy going way. Very caring and tries her best to help us get through the class. Definitely would take her again for any chem course.
I took her for chem 30A although she has great teaching skills her grading is not fair. She decided to change grading at the end of the quarter after everyone had taken the final exam. She received several emails from other student asking why their grades went down and she said it was because students had missing assignments. This was not the case!
Dr. E is a magnificent Chem professor, I highly, highly recommend!! Her lectures are on point. She explains everything very clearly and gives lots of practice problems. She's rather hilarious and really cares about her students. Show up to office hours, she helps you out for the test and you can form a study group for labs (Taken during Covid)
Great professor, the only reason I didn't really like her was the class ended up being easier than my high-school chemistry class. Don't take CHEM 1A with another professor.
She's honestly been extremely helpful and has one of the better online lecture formats that I've seen, she makes everything straightforward and does an excellent job explaining things that don't make sense. All the topics on her study guides are on her tests/quizzes so utilize those. She won't surprise you with anything difficult, just put in work.
Amazing professor. Definitely try to take her class for Chem1A. Let us use notes during exams and the final. Though future classes probably won't because Fall 2021 will be in person. Teaches everything you need to know in lectures, book isn't necessary. Watch her lectures, attend review sessions, you'll pass.
Dr. E is a great professor and very good lecturer. Chem 1A as a class is fairly difficult, but she gives lots of practice exams and problems that are similar to the tests. Around 5 no time limit quiz's, 3 Exams, and a cumulative final. Averages for tests are pretty low (in the 60's) but there is no curve, I think thats all of Chem 1A in general.
As someone succinctly said Professor Esfandiari is really good at making things easy to understand. I wish i could get her again for Chem 1B but i wasn't so lucky. Don't skip class, study, and you'll do fine enough.
Dr. E was great! Completely asynchronous for Fall 2020, had lectures posted every week, sometimes early. The lecture grade is JUST QUIZZES AND EXAMS. Attend her review sessions before each exam and do the practice exams! She reuses questions from those to put on the real exam. Shes entertaining and motivational! You can tell she loves her job
Great chem professor. Course is 3 exams, 1 final, 4 quizzes, 1 small extra credit quiz. Lectures are posted weekly so there is no attending class. Grade relies heavily on exams. Exams & final are proctored but does not require respondus. Take her class only if you are a good test taker Grading scale is adjusted 71.9 -65.0 % C
Dr. E is an amazing professor. As someone that never took chemistry before, I was on the same level as other students and sometimes even better. For Fall 2020, it was asynchronous and her grades are based on 4 major exams, a few quizzes, and the final exam. All of the quizzes/exams/final were open note, definitely attend her office hours for help!
While she can explain things well, she is unorganized. Every week she assigns labs and quizzes that conflict with the lectures. The labsters are difficult, useless, and a complete waste of time. She introduces new concepts you have never seen on midterms! She is a hard grader and she doesn't use a textbook so if you are drowning tough luck :D
Melody has an extremely unorganized and has an outdated way of teaching. I was almost scared to email her about any questions I had because of her bluntness and downright rudeness. Tests us on things we haven't learned on the exams but the exams are pretty much impossible to do anyway.
Honestly, it was pretty hard to maintain a high grade this semester. I minor in Chem so I found the class difficult but not the hardest thing ever, the exams are a different story. She does test on things that you haven't even seen before, or you will have to create a new concept in the middle of the test. She did give extra credit. Doest curve
Dr. E made the class really easy to follow along with at your own pace each week. She posted the lectures all at once the weekend/Monday of the week so you can watch them when you have time. She makes practice exams for lecture and lab which were really helpful and set you up for success each test.
Dr. E is such a sweet person! Two things to keep in mind: 1) she posts a lot longer videos than the allotted 2.5 hrs of lecture time per week. Be prepared for 2-3 times that. 2) She only has 1 office hour/week. Her solution for struggling students is the office hour, but many have work/class during that time. Overall, a very good Professor though!
I took this class for my engineer requirement. Dr.E really wants her students to pass, she posts a lot of reviews and study guides before every exam and final. Of course, this class will be difficult if you don't watch Dr. E's lecture videos and do the Practice Exam before every midterm and final. Didn't try much but I passed with a B.
Dr. E really wants you to succeed in chemistry and gives you many resources to do so! The material can challenging so it is really important to take advantage of these resources. Attend office hours and workshops. You really get out what you put in. Dr. E does everything she can to help you succeed but you still have to do your part.
Dr. E is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. Her videos go through every topic we need to know for the quizzes, tests, and labs. She just really wanted us to pass, but you also have to be willing to put in the work yourself. She gives a lot of practice and examples.
She's the light in the dark tunnel when speaking about the chem dep. as a whole. U can tell she wants everyone to pass but can only do the most: being available during/after office hours and optional review/practice exams. Rest is up to the student willing to put in the effort. Lectures are very detailed and take-home quizzes are harder than exams
I took her class during the Covid. She is such a great lecturer, passionate about chemistry, and knowledgeable. She is very approachable and cares about her students. Pay attention to the lectures, do the homework, definitely study, you will be fine!
After taking AP Chem, Esfandiari is one of the best chem teachers I've had so far. Even though the class was fully online and we just watched videos, she definitely cared for her students and even published practice exams for our lab section which she doesn't teach. As long as you watch her videos, do the practice, you should be fine.
The lecture videos she posts are extremely informative and useful for Chem1A and future chem classes. She explains concepts in a way you will understand and provides a lot of practice. Her exams were not easy, but you can do well if you study and use the resources given. Definitely recommend her as a professor! She's amazing!
love love love. Dr. E is a wonderful prof. and was a pleasure to have for chem lecture. She is entirely the only reason I passed that semester because of singmasters exams messing up my grades. It's clear Dr. E cares about her students and makes chem understandable. She made learning interesting and really tried to make singmasters exams bearable.
best professor in the whole chem department in my opinion, she invokes a feeling of actual interest in chemistry and not just some cranky professor. she has a way of explaining topics/lessons that are 10x more easy to digest than reading from the textbook or from another professor.
She's one of those professors that actually cares for her students and gives everyone an equal chance to pass the class. If her class is available for lecture, take it. She's really gonna give you a nice time in CHEM. Would recommend and I wish she also taught 1B :(
Great lectures, as long as you attend them you don't need to read the textbook. Quizzes are for homework, and collaboration with classmates on them is encouraged. She also gives practice exams for each lecture exam, the final, and the two lab exams.
I've never really understood chemistry until I took her class. Most professors lecture for the majority of the class and throw in a few example problems. She does the opposite and it helps so much to be able to see live example problems and how they are solved.
dr. e is amazing. engaging lectures, accessible outside of class, everything a student could want in a lecturer and more. provides review videos and recorded lectures, as well as practice for lab exams which she doesn't need to do. very glad I had dr. e this semester, could not recommend highly enough. made chemistry fun to learn!
Take Dr. E for chem! Her lectures allow you to actually understand chemistry. Her tests are difficult, but study hard and go to lectures everyday and you will be okay. Dr. E really wants to you pass this class, she wants to do everything in her power to help you pass. Be faithful to your studying and you will do just fine under her guidance.
Dr. E makes chemistry so easy to learn and interesting. She is willing to help students. Her exam review recordings are also very helpful. Don't skip the labs!
Dr. E makes chemistry so easy to learn and interesting.
This professor is the highlight of the chemistry department at SJSU, I will forever wish she could teach every chemistry class here. Attendance is not mandatory but required to pass the class. Exams are tough only because topics are complex but she explains so well. All exams multiple choice and no quizzes/hw so exams matter a lot!!
Dr. E is by far the best Chemistry professor I've ever had. She really takes the time to make sure her students understand the material. I had to retake this course and noticed a huge difference in my grade after taking it with her. If you want a professor who makes Chemistry interesting, take her.
I'm not even a chem major, but taking chem with Dr. E makes you rethink your major.
Dr. E good prof makes chem fun
I came on here just to see if she had any bad reviews and i'm not surprised to see she has a 5/5 score. Dr. E is so good at explaining complex subjects and making sure you really understand the concept. I've taken a couple of chemistry lectures in high school and at sjsu and this is by far the hardest but somehow it was the funest. TAKE HER !!!
I took her class at De Anza and I am very happy that I did. She's one of the best professors I have ever had. She's very sweat, understanding, caring, and very hilarious. A literal angel!! Highly recommend her!!!!!
Gives rude responses.
I'm not even going to lie, Dr. E is probably the best professor at SJSU. Period. She manages to make the most complex concepts not only easier to understand, but interesting and engaging. She offers extra credit based on the class's overall performance on exams, and truly cares for the success of her students. I will never forget this class.
Professor Esfandiari is really good at giving lectures. They were engaging and made me interested in Chemistry, a subject I really hate. My problem with her class is the the tests, they are multiple choice with no partial credit , usually 30 items which means every 2-3 questions wrong is a letter down, and are hard compared to the practice exams.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Her lectures are AMAZING and she cares about her students. If you do her quizzes and practice exams they will prepare you well for the tests. As long as you go to lectures and work hard, you'll be fine. Started the semester with no interest in chem and ended with loving the subject, not a lot of teachers can do that!
Just attend the lectures and go to office hours if you have questions-that will net you at least a B- if you take consistent notes since Professor Esfandiari is a thorough teacher that does everything to make the class easier on students. The exams and take home quizzes are hard-but many resources are offered to aid studying. 12/10 class.
Dr. E is a bit overrated, but still is a good professor. She's passionate about teaching chemistry and really wants students to learn. WATCH HER YOUTUBE VIDEOS! It will help you pass lecture, lab & seminar. Chemistry is hard at SJSU, so make sure you don't underestimate the importance of leveraging her resources to succeed.
Dr. E is a very nice professor, she always offers students to seek help and she encourages students to practice by using her take home problems. For exams, she gives a lot of resources such as her youtube videos, lecture booklet, chem workshop, and study guides to study with. Practice, practice that's all you really need in this class for exams.
She was my favorite professor. I struggled but that was mostly my fault. She's very approachable and is willing to explain any lecture notes or lend a helping hand. Test heavy but if you apply yourself should be an easy pass.
She will guide you to a good grade. Her lectures are amazing and she makes the chemistry feel so simple with her explanations. 4 exams but takes the time out of her day to do study sessions and many practice problems. Nicest professor ever.
Makes lectures fun and explains everything very well. I had to drop the class halfway in before any exams but was happy with my time in her class. Don't miss any lectures because they are really important and missing one day could really set you back. Overall hard subject but great prof and great teaching style.
Have to say, if you ask a dumb question then she is a little rude. Which I really did not appriciate about her. But other wise great lectures. DO her practice exams a couple of times and as fast as possible then you can aim for higger in the actual exams. Her exams are extensive really
She's the was the best one for Chem1A at that time, Everyone else seemed trash. But I will say that at that time I had pretty trash options when compared to her. Shes a good one tho. Great lectures, PAY ATTENTION cuz she puts alot of effort. GO TO OFFICE HOURS once two weeks.
one of the best professors i've had, made chem 1a so easy to understand. just make sure to come to lecture and pay attention and you will pass.
I love this woman. This class is going to be hard just because it's chemistry, but I am convinced that if I didn't have her I wouldn't understand anything at all. Just attend lectures and you will pass, she is really knowledgeable. If you every get a chance to take a class with her or someone else, CHOOSE HER.
She's very passionate about to teaching chemistry. Even though I kind of did not so well for the first exam which was my fault for being 10 minutes late, but I improved my scores more on the last two exams. She definitely cares about students a lot and does exam review sessions to get us prepared.
Greatest teacher ever. Even if youre not great at chem, you will pass by attending lectures (not mandatory but EXTREMELY needed to succeed). very approachable and accessible outside of class. Study study STUDY! the second you learn a new topic-- it will help you on the tests! gives ex. credit after exams to help ur grade too! would take again:)
Dr. E is most likely the best professor at San Jose State. She made chemistry a blast to learn, and if you pay attention and put in effort you'll pass with a B at least.
Dr. E's lectures are great she really helps with learning by providing many examples and going over things multiple times. With the exams you really need to study and make sure you take advantage of the resources she gives. As long as you try in the class you should pass and attend lecture.
Lecure and test heavy. Her lectures could get pretty boring, you're better off finding her YouTube and not going to class. Not many things go in the grade book, so you must do well on quizzes and tests. She gives practice tests but they are not similar to the actual test.
Dr. E, best professor I've ever had. She is everything you want in a professor: she's very knowledgeable, she's extremely gifted at conveying this knowledge in lectures, she's accessible, she puts in a ton of effort with extra resources, she's kind, she's likable, and she's easy (as easy as a chem professor can be). She will change your life. GOAT.
Dr. E is truly an amazing professor. Her lectures are engaging and she provides tons of helpful resources. While the class is challenging, attending her classes and utilizing tools like Unstuck study for exam prep can lead to great success. Highly recommend!
She is too too too good. Perfect.
Dr. E is such an amazing professor. The homework is reasonable, and she is very available for questions. She explains things super well. Taking her class really led me to fall in love with chemistry.
Amazing professor, but her exams don't show the answer which defeats the purpose of learning, also the tests are hard.
As an incoming freshman, I was scared of going into this class but she constantly offered a ton of resources and support throughout the year that turned a very difficult subject into a manageable one.
Dr. E is a wonderful professor. Offers extra credit here and there and is very passionate about was she teaches. Her tests are difficult (only recieved a low grade because I struggle a lot with chemistry).
Shes really good chem teacher but im lwky not the smartest so I'm not gonna pass, but I would take her again. DONT miss lecture, which was my mistake because it will get you so far behind and I'm already slow asf as is. Try your best to understand her concepts and get help asap if youre lost since you can't really chat in a big lecture hall
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. The energy and excitement she brings to the lectures was like no other professor. Coming into the course, I was scared due to everyone telling me Chem1A was almost impossible to pass but if you seriously put in the time, effort and show up to her lectures, it wasn't so bad. Thank you Dr E!
She's the best professor I've had at SJSU. The way she presented topics was very clear, I felt like I left lecture every day understanding everything she'd said. I hated chemistry in high school, but I really enjoyed this class because Dr. E made everything so understandable (and her lectures are entertaining, too!)
Dr. Esfandiari is a young, enthusiastic teacher full of energy and love for chemistry. All you have to do in this class to succeed is attend lectures and pay attention. If you miss lecture, she has all lectures uploaded to youtube. You will be graded on only 4 MCQ tests, so be prepared for those. She gives you resources to prepare you, take them.
Dr. E is so caring and kind, and it's clear that she wants you to succeed. She provides a lot of extra credit opportunities and test prep material (practice tests, study guides, review vids). If you pay attention in class and utilize her study material, this class will be a breeze. Overall, she is an amazing human being, TAKE HER!!
Best professor of all time. She is so good at explaining. Make sure to ask questions if you're confused. Don't skip her lecture!
Dr. E is a great teacher who makes learning General Chemistry easy. Her lectures are not long, but they are heavily packed with information.
Dr. E is one of the best teachers I've had. Chemistry overall is a difficult subject, but she explains it in a easy and concise way that made sense and helped me understand the topics a lot better. If you actually go to class and put in a slight bit of effort into studying and preparing, this class should be an easy pass.
She was an amazing lecturer. Would give lots of practice problems during lectures and then give a take home problem for the next lecture which she would go over. Very passionate. I never used a textbook, only her notes. Numerous study material to prepare for lecture exams and lab exams. We got 2 extra credit opportunities. Would 100% take again
Dr. E was a wonderful professor. Unlike most professors, she lectures 3 days a week, so you really get plenty of practice in class. She simplifies topics using analogies (usually with funny drawings). You get 3 midterms, which are taken on canvas, and a final. USE THE PRACTICE QUIZZES SHE UPLOADS TO CANVAS. WATCH HER VIDEOS!!
Purely an amazing lecturer.
I honestly really loved her she was such a funny and really helped me understand the material
I miss her everyday no chem teacher will ever measure up to her make sure you guys study for her tests if I studied more I could've gotten an A
Loved taking her class! Her lectures are always entertaining and I felt like I actually liked learning chemistry. I didn't score well in the class because chemistry is very difficult but Dr. E made it a lot easier.
shes so nice and caring and she always as great lectures so just go she tries to be funny but shes really nice.
She makes a very hard chem class slightly better.
Her explanations were very easy to follow. Definitely one of the best professors at SJSU!
Dr.E is such an amazing professor in my 1st semester. She made lectures very fun, even though they could be heavy and hard to understand if you read a textbook. She gave real-life examples to make lessons easy to understand. Even though my class was a morning section but I swear it not sleepy at all. Be ready to laugh and DO PRACTICES!!!
Dr.E is a true gem in the SJSU chem department. She was the only one that I found kept my sense of peace in such a hard class. Chem can get confusing QUICK, but Dr. E helps prepare you sooooo well. Tests are very difficult, but manageable if you put in the work. While attendance isn't counted, DO NOT MISS THE LECTURE!!! Would take her again.
Hands down the best professor I have come across so far in university, and my major is not even heavily chemistry-related (I only need CHEM1A). She keeps everything engaging, she is funny, and prepares you well. The exams are nothing out of the ordinary. As a student who grew up heavily disliking chemistry, she is the reason I come to like it now.
I actually love her; she is the only good science teacher I have ever had. My grade was lowkey my fault because I suck at Chem, but she is super funny and an amazing teacher!
Professor E is the prime example of what a professor should be. Explains topics so clearly. Lectures are always engaging and useful. Gives plenty of practice for exams, which are also pretty easy. Put in the work, and you will be rewarded. She's as talented in chemistry as LeBron James is in basketball.
Very caring. Grading criteria and expectations are very clear. Provides some extra credit opportunities, plenty of practice and study material, and even holds study sessions over Zoom before exams. You will need to put in the work to succeed in this class, such as attending SI sessions and workshops outside of lecture, but it will pay off.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!! her lectures were very clear and easy to understand. she provided really helpful resources that you could use to study. definitely go over her practice exams a few times before actual tests. take her if you dont want chem to be confusing.
Dr. E was the funniest, made chem interesting. Allocated her time to help students study for exams, as well as offers extra credit opportunities. Resources for exams and lab (not her responsibility). 7 quizzes 3 exams. Material will be difficult if you don't put in the effort. Probably the best prof in the chem department.
pretty chill and funny at times. attendance isnt mando but she doesnt post lectures so its best to go. speaks fast but she dumbs down the material so its pretty easy to understand.
Chem30A was hard for me. I couldn't really understand her nor hear her. Best to sit in the front. She sometimes wrote too fast. She doesn't post lecture notes so it's best to go. Honestly I wouldn't take her again but she's a good teacher. Just make sure to pay attention and ask questions.
Dr. E provides so many resources to help you succeed. Studying the review videos and practice tests basically guarantees at least a B because of how similar they are to the actual midterms and final.
Love prof e so much, her lectures were so interactive and fun and I enjoyed going to her lectures. She's always willing to talk to anyone who has questions and she explains the concepts so well. her first midterm might be a little hard considering its the first and everyone has nervous feelings abt it but study hard and well and you'll pass.
Lecture was very helpful as she does practice problems and take-home questions to make sure you understand the concepts. Hosts Zoom study sessions to prepare for exams and even provides practice exams to help you study. 2 EC opportunities. 3 exams (non-cumulative) and 1 final (cumulative) that are all done through Canvas.
Incredible professor! You will definitely need to put in effort, but she breaks down the materials in a way that makes it easy to understand. Take her class!
dr e was amazing! i took her class twice (failed the first time), and she gave off the same energy in her lectures. she explains the material well, but youd need to commit to practicing and studying thru si seshs, workshops, etc cuz those exams do get tough. no distinct hw after lecture per se, but there are quizzes and extra credit
Lectures are mostly practice problems. The quizzes and exams are the only things graded. Exams are a mixture of the lecture problems, quizzes, and some random harder questions. All work can be done in a group, only exams are individual. The lab book is needed but not the lecture book. Easy if you study, I passed without studying much.
