Don't fool yourself - Finance is a VERY hard class. Don't expect to "coast" through this class. You MUST pay attention early on and do the math problems. Buy the calculator NOW and learn the main concepts well because the entire course builds on PV/FV. Overall she was a kind teacher who IMO cared about her students - she is just a new teacher.
Class is tough but she gives three percentage points at the end of year if you attend all but two classes. She isn't easy and she does not prepare for test exactly, you have to do that on your own but the slides she post online are great for studying. She likes to talk about the company she works for which doesnt help with tests. not bad not great.
Content is pretty challenging but she does a good job of explaining. She gives study guides for every test except the optional final. She also has reviews every Saturday morning before an exam, which I found helpful.
DO NOT TAKE. She IS NOT clear at all and the material wouldn't be that difficult if she understood how to teach it. She has just begun teaching and has not mastered the material. You will be teaching this to yourself. Save yourself the money for dropping it or the grade for sticking with it and get a different professor.
She rambles a lot and tends to go off topic. This is the first finance class I have ever taken and I found it extremely hard to follow along with anything she said. She does not write anything down in class as far as notes or examples. Tests are 70% conceptual but she gives a completely quantitative review. Cares more about attendance than teaching
the average grades on the first 3 tests ranged from 62, 64, and 70. dont take her
She is not a good teacher. If you want to pass do not take. I had to drop this class because how bad she was. Misleading teaching. Her test are mostly conceptual but she rambles on and gives no insight on material. Do not take. Worse teacher I've ever had in my entire life.
Her tests do not look anything like her lectures. I was so ready for the tests and studied a ton but somehow still did poorly on the tests. She is also rude sometimes. I did not like her personality or her teaching style. Take anyone else!
Absolutely horrible, if you have her in your enrollment cost please dropdelete it right now. Choosing this teacher was the biggest mistake of my college life. My GPA is about to drop big time. She rambles on about things that will not be on the test. Tests are mostly conceptual. Final "optional" replaces lowest grade even if its lower that lowest.
If you aren't good at this subject, DO NOT take her. She is not good at teaching the subject matter and you will have to teach yourself or spend another $100 on TZ packets. I am a good student and I found it veryyyyy hard to make even a C in the class because she teaches WAY too much material for each 30 question exam. An A is nearly impossible.
WORST PROFESSOR . She rambles about stuff that has nothing to do with the class. Don't waste your time going to office hours. Asked her to explain one thing I didn't understand, she responded with "no, that will take to long." She's given out about 10% extra credit toward your total grade and I'm still going to fail. Do not take her!
I did not like her at all. Poor Instruction, difficult test, I cant say enough bad things about this class
You can go to class everyday and still not know what is going on. Her lectures are boring and long; try keeping interest even if Finance is your major. Tests are ridiculously hard. She is horrible at explaining, she acts like everything is like 1st grade math. I would rather drop my Finance major than have to take this class.
By far the worst professor of my college career. She expects people to already know the material before it's taught. I would never recommend anyone take her. Her lectures are way too long and godawful boring this is partially the reason I dropped her, along with her insanely difficult test. Especially if you're a finance major and need a B- to pass
This is definitely NOT an easy class. I definitely recommend going to class, using her lecture notes, and going to her office hours for clarity. She is a very nice person although she can be quite rude at times; but she is one of the most horrible instructors I have had thus far, she is just not very good at TEACHING. Some say TZ helps.
She knows what she is doing. While it is easy to get lost in the material, I truly believe she does her best. She is a very kind person and is always willing to help. Personally, I found it very helpful to record her lectures and then go back and listen to them with the completed notes. It is quite handy and makes much more sense the second time.
Tests are difficult. She thinks you should be as educated as she is on the subject she is teaching you?
I don't understand why she has such bad ratings. . If you go to class and spend 1-2 hours a day on the class you will get a B easy. She is always willing to help after class and she emails you back quickly if you have a question. She definitely knows the information, but sometimes she isn't that clear. Overall she is a good teacher
She is a pretty good teacher, finance itself is just a hard concept to grasp especially if you've never been exposed to it before. I write down her lecture slides word for word, including examples, and just do the homework and study guide and got an A on the first test. Not impossible, just takes effort.
She has been nearly the worst professor I've had so far. Her reviews for the test are miles ahead of what she "teaches" us and somehow expects us to know what she's rambling on about. She flies through slides so you can't write down good notes but still bothers to put stupid quotes in her lectures when she should be helping you pass
She has the best intentions and is very sweet. The class is a "weed out" class, so it's designed to be difficult. Regardless, I found her lectures to be boring, poorly worded, not helpful, and a waste of my time. The book explains it all better. Read it. Also, her tests are far less quantitative than her study guides.
Melody does not deserve such a low rating, but this class was more tedious than neccessary. Her study guides are decent for each test and a B is very possible just by listening to her lectures and putting in mild effort on the homework.
This class isn't as bad as people make it out to be. The homework is tedious, but the 4 exams aren't too bad if you really study for them. Additionally, she gives 3 extra percentage points at the end of the semester if you miss 3 or less days of class
She wasn't very helpful when I asked her questions, in person or via email. Taking the class online is better because she posts lectures and power points (she doesn't do that for the in-person classes). There is A LOT of homework. It's very tedious and will overlap with exams. Overall, my hardest class in the college of business.
One of the worst instructors. She is very unclear, and her classes are chaotic. In class, she jumps ahead in the chapter and then tells her students "to watch the online videos" to understand what she is talking about. I have gleaned nothing from classes and have taught myself the material by reading and taking my own notes.
So I've never written a review on a teacher before, but felt it was warranted due to how awful this teacher truly is. Worst professor I've ever had. 0/10 would not recommend.
She definitely gets a bad rep but doesn't deserve it. Yes the class isn't easy and yes she goes through the slides quickly, but its because there is a ton of material to cover. Studying in a group and going to her office hours, even if just to listen to other peoples questions that you may not think to ask helps a ton. Very nice lady and helpful.
Believe me she doesn't deserve that low rating. Finance is not easy and that what students don't understand. Watch her videos and you'll do good
BY FAR the worst professor I've ever had. Taking the in-class version but she claims she is "not going to lecture in-class, you must watch the videos online". The videos are horrible rambling and cover barely any of the material. I highly recommend using TutoringZone if you have trouble - didn't learn about it til exam 3 and its saving my grade.
I prefer her video lectures over in-person lectures because she talks kinda fast and rambles a lot. The video lectures helped me a lot more. The class is very difficult and she is vague when you ask a question, so my tip would be to study EVERYTHING (from homework, study guide, online material). BEWARE: I know a lot of people who retook her class.
Went to tutoringzone the entire semester and thought I understood it but when I would take the tests, they were much more confusing. Her tests are mostly conceptual and barely any math. Stopped going to class and would just watch her lectures online and it still didn't help.
Tests are hard and she doesn't curve. You HAVE to know the material in and out. I would watch her videos, read the textbook, and then read about every term/concept on investopedia to get several definitions of the words. You can't just know one definition because the tests will have something worded completely different but it means the same thing.
Currently the only course between me and my degree. She is not a good teacher. Speaks about finance as if you yourself are a expert in it. EVEN though this is a introductory course. Test are extremely difficult. If your in the college of business at FSU change your major. Thats how bad she is. Also she is the only finance teacher so no options.
If you can take another professor I would, the material is hard and the tests are strangely hard. She will ask you questions from the lecture that are not that important to the material that was covered so you constantly have to be paying attention.
The absolute worst professor I've ever had. Completely unflexible no matter what your situation is. Do yourself a favor and read the book and know all the concepts. Her lectures are practically pointless because her test material comes from the book or outside sources that you are somehow responsible to know. Considering changing my major.
Just not a good teacher. Can't concisely cover topics. Overcomplicates simple ideas. Lectures are seriously drawn out for no good reason. I have had classes covering far more advanced topics than this that have been able to convey long chapters into lectures that are 30 minutes to an hour long. This teacher takes 2 - 4 times that amount of time.
Extremely tough grader and not willing to help. This was the last class I had to take before graduating and after working with her in office hours multiple times per week I never felt prepared for the exams. Study guides were not helpful or relevant lectures were a waste. Do Not Take Her.
Long lectures that barely cover test material. Poor teaching.
Initially I took the reviews on here with a grain of salt, but when I asked how she calculated something using the BAII calculator in her lecture notes because I couldn't get the same answer, her response to me was "it's too much work to remember how. " Overall unorganized and doesn't put in the effort needed to prepare MBA grads adequately :(
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She's currently the only option, so push off taking this class until they bring in someone that's half-way qualified. She posts useless lectures that are necessary for homework, but that do nothing to help prepare for the exam. I have a 3.9 GPA and am currently struggling to even pass this class. Worst professor I've had
Absolute worst professor I have taken in my 4 years of undergraduate school. She takes pride in the fact that this course is frequently failed by intelligent students. She would rather see her students fail than answer emails or offer any help. I wish I had taken a different teacher when I had the chance.
A small chunk of EC is given. The material itself is not actually that difficult. 4 tests and some HW. The core problem with this class is the low quality of the lectures. They don't pertain well to what is on the tests. You may learn a lot, yet still fail exams because of this, even with prior knowledge in this field or class. She's nice, though
Maybe it's just because I went into the class with belief that I was going have to work hard for a good grade, but I didn't find this class to be overly difficult. By no means an easy class, but not as difficult as the average reviews make it seems.
Melody really cares, tough class but finance is challenging. She was always available for questions, just do the practice problems And you can achieve an A. No textbook needed. She rounds up and curves, completely recommend taking her
Difficult class, but very manageable. Lots of resources given, if you invest the time you will be fine. Great professor very clear and helpful.
I taught myself the entire course because she is absolutely awful. Her lectures only make things 10x more complicated. There is zero clarity in her lectures. She does a very poor job at preparing you for exams. I suggest the school finds a new teacher for this course as soon as possible.
Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. She's incredibly uninspiring and does not believe in her students what so ever. She prides herself way too much and has little to no interest for her students well being. Do whatever you can to take this class with a teacher or to take it at another university, it is nearly impossible to do well.
Does not explain finance in a way that is easily relatable to college students. She is the only professor teaching this course so basically we are all in trouble. I am re-taking this class and I used TZ to help pass this class. She does not curve so don't ask, even if your grade is 69.88! (Trust me, I tried). But extra credit (2% is given).
I took the class online, and just watched the lectures on blackboard. For me, I did the homework, learnsmart assignments and read the chapters thoroughly. I watched most of the lectures, but sometimes I didn't. It is not a terribly difficult class, but to do good on the test, you have to understand the material. I barely made an A in the class.
Just finished this course last Monday. I went to every single lecture for this class, because why not. I found the lectures to be very good. Its finance, it's not easy for someone to relate it to an easier. simpler topic. The exams aren't too bad either. It's a 3000 level course, so it's obviously going to be tough. Being good in math def. helps.
The class isn't easy but if you do the homeworks and read the book, you'll do fine. She is not trying to make anyone fail, I never watched the lectures but they weren't necessary. Just read the book in the parts that appear in the Connect and do your homework. Got a 95, there are test banks for the theoretical part of the exams.
This is a really hard class. 4 exams and the homework isn't really related to the exams. Go to TA office hours and you can pass.
Don't recommend at all, class is harder than it should be. Lectures don't help either
This is the worst professor I've ever had. This is the only class I've ever taken that I have a good chance of failing. The tests are extremely difficult, and there is so much homework. Extra credit was offered, but not enough to rescue my grade at this point.
Awful. Horrible lecturer. Lectures are boring and so poorly done that you would learn significantly more studying out of the book during class. The worst part of the class is not the material or difficulty it is the awful professor.
I am in the online class, the material can be difficult, but her online lectures are great. Melody does not get the credit she deserves. I have gotten A's on all 3 exams so far and HW is easy points. Like anything, you get out what you put in. Haven't opened the book once, except to complete the HW assignments. Just use her PPTs & study guides.
The online lectures are just not enough to prepare you for the exams. There is a reason why a few different companies around campus are making thousands of dollars per semester off of preparatory classes specifically for her exams. Found myself having to find study materials from all different kinds of sources to scrape by.
The workload, when one considers homework plus required study time for tests, feels like taking at least 2 other classes at the same time. Never have I been so stressed out at FSU than before taking this class.
This class eats up all my time and cuts into studying for other classes. Very hard! PRAYING for a curve, even after the 2% EC. The professor seems very knowledgeable, though!
Tests are extremely difficult. Study materials will not help you on the test. Find a tutor and go to the TAs.
The only option for FIN3403 at FSU. Buckle down for a wild ride.
Worst professor I've had at FSU. She's terrible at teaching but it is possible to pass. Exams are heavy on conceptual ideas so make sure you actually understand what's going on - you can't just memorize. If possible, use TZ to understand the conceptual stuff. This class isn't easy so go in expecting to work hard if you want to get a decent grade.
This is easily the worst professor I've ever had at FSU. She talks about the topics like her students have a casual understanding of these materials already. She does not "teach" in the sense of the word, rather she talks about concepts without ever helping students understand. The online lectures are hard to follow and confusing. BAD TEACHER!!!!!
I am an A student and I was seriously struggling in the beginning. The professor talks to you like you already know the material and she makes things way harder than they should be. Got a D on my first test but Skoolers (aka TZ) has saved my grade! FSU seriously needs to look for a new professor. Doesn't help that tests are 80% of your grade.
If you try to take this class in 6 weeks, don't. I have put so much time into this class and am on the border of C+/B-. The lectures are so boring but you really need to watch all of them and pay attention. PURCHASE A CHEGG ACCOUNT, all of the homework is on there and tells you exactly how to do it. Tests are nearly impossible to do well on. GL
She is not as bad and the class is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Challenging, sure, but that's why you're in college. Took is online over the summer in a 6 week period and got an A. All you need to do is put in the necessary time and you'll get an A. Gave out a whole 2% of extra credit for just watching a 5 minute video.
Worst professor I've had at FSU. She's a total sellout. Homework costs $110 just for access to do it. She has a system where you submit questions so other students can help you. She does the absolute least amount of work possible. Lectures are terrible so you teach yourself 90% of the material. Ridiculous amounts of redundant homework. Good luck.
Worst teacher I've ever had, don't know why she hasn't been fired yet. She's rude and doesn't believe in her students. Someone hurt her because there is no reason someone is so miserable. She has no respect for her students and I think she actually gets joy out of making kids cry during finals week.
Second time I took this class. Took a whole new approach to learning (take in class and actually go watch the lectures in person). Really helpful IF you go to class and pay attention. Homework can be tedious and won't help during the exam. You must study continuously for the exams (I studied the most I've ever had for any class and got an 84%).
worst professor I've ever had. Not even sure she understands what she is teaching. Gives so much homework and four tests, but tests make up 80 PERCENT of your overall grade, so bomb one and you will fail. As a teacher she is completely useless. Avoid her if you can
The class is very hard. The professors lectures are unclear but, she answers any questions you have. The book helps a lot and so do the study guides. IF you skip class and procrastinate until the test day to study you most likely would fail. The professor is not as bad as people say she is. Just play your part and you should be able to pass.
No physical textbook required but get ready to spend $100+ to do your homework. As someone below said, she's a sellout. God awful professor. Does the bare minimum to scrape by and get her paycheck. Not much can be learned from her lectures. Get ready to use Google and tutoring. FSU really needs another 3403 instructor, cause she needs to go.
Really difficult to begin with but mixed with the worst professor I've ever had at FSU makes this class insane... Be prepared to figure out everything on your own, make sure you do every homework assignment- you can't afford to lose points. Highly recommend Skoolers - watching her lectures are pointless, she has no care or respect for any student
Holy moly, this class was pretty bad and the teacher had a lot to do with it. I watched only one lecture and could not stand her voice and hear her babble about everything but the material. Thank the lord for skoolers tutoring - I just did that and worked through her study guides online. conceptual heavy, moderate math. 2 pt EC at end though aye!
God help you when you take this class, only way you're going to get a good grade is by getting tutored with skoolers, and even then her tests will throw questions at you that you've never seen a day in your life. good luck
I watched the lectures for the first chapters, but quickly learned that the online textbook is what u need to GET this class. do the online reading and answer the questions correctly until you understand the material. Do her study guide before every exam all the way through and you should be fine.
worst class i have taken at FSU. without chegg i would have spent even more time struggling on hw problems. if you are going to take this class make sure you do all hw, this will help in the end. overall this class should NOT be required for non finance majors. way too hard. the book and her lectures will not cut it as far as material u need.
She holds selective office hours-unusual for a prof of a very difficult class. Havent watched one of her lectures and used Skoolers. Will get a B. I emailed her with questions and she directed me to the textbook and syllabus.
Hardest class Ive taken at fsu coupled with, and probably because, shes the worst professor Ive had at fsu. Horrible lectures, hard tests, lots of homework. Avoid if at all possible but if fin3403 is required for you good luck. Shes the only professor teaching it
This professor is by far the worst professor I have ever come across. Hoe will take a deuce on you, your grades, future, career, and the list goes on. She expects you to know material that she, herself has no knowledge on. And then drops bombs for exams worse than Al-Kaida. Drop out or change schools if this is required. Please and Thank You.
This is a very tough class, and it doesn't help that the professor is not that great either. I basically took this class without a professor. She would post incorrect formulas and when students asked for help she would give ambiguous replies like "review the chapter."
She's really not as bad as everyone says. You do need to put effort into the homework and it can be tedious sometimes, but just review her study guides and you'll be fine.
This class was challenging but certainly not impossible. What worked for me was watching lectures, then going through the book and simultaneously filling out the study guide. If you are thorough with the study guide and can solve all of the math problems on it, you will do well. The textbook and Chegg will be your best friends.
Plain and simple just sucks as a teacher. I worked really really hard and got a B. Was scared the whole semester cause i am a finance major and needed a B-. Gives extra credit at the end (2 points to raw grade). Get Skoolers packet.
She's honestly not as bad as everyone says. When only 10% of the lecture room is full, I'm not surprised people say it is hard when they never go. about 3 hours of homework every week which isn't bad. tests count for 80% of the grade. study a fair amount and you'll be fine.
Stumbles through her recoded lectures like a bumbling idiot. Good luck trying to learn anything from them for the 4 exams that make up 80% of your grade.
She is not the problem, it's you. Learn something valuable for once if you want to actually have a job after college. Took accelerated with other classes & watched ONE lecture, bc the MY Lab thing (hw & textbook) is enough if you Readdd the chapters given. Complete the hws , entire study guide and extra problems, quit whining you'll be fine.
The only reason why I will be interning for a BB in New York is because of this class. You are a finance major and this class is the first REAL applied finance course. You will learn so much and if you actually pay attention and try, you will go far. I enjoyed this class and it was easy to prepare for. Watch videos, read, and do homework. Simple.
If you're not an accounting/finance major, you better buckle down and STUDY!!! Not as hard as I thought but still is. Her lectures are horrible, she seems so nervous in each. The tests are sort of straight from the textbook because she's lazy, so the textbook matters. That and you have to do the assignments for 15% and 5% of your grade anyways.
Don't expect everything to be explained in detail, this class requires some critical thought. Her lectures can get a little long, but they cover everything necessary for the tests which she makes fairly easy. Took the class in 6 weeks so it was very time consuming, but as long as you put in the work, this class is really not bad at all.
Her test banks are on quizlet if you look hard enough. If you really really want the A you can get it. Took it in 6 weeks too so a regular semester should be alright. Chegg the homework, be able to memorize about 300+ quizlet flash cards for each exam, and do the math. pretty easy just time consuming. if you do badly it's your fault. PRIORITIES
This class was grueling in 6 weeks but still manageable. Read the textbook and do the homework and you will have no problem on the exams. They are pretty straightforward with no tricks. She is not a great lecturer but does give you everything you need to pass the exams. Put in the work and you will get a good grade. Crucial for Finance majors.
Tough class if you're not good at finance. Weekly assignments were annoying but doable. Study and you'll do fine on exams.
Weekly homework assignments, easy with Chegg. Read the textbook, study quizlet flashcards, and definitely do her study guide to do well in the class. Tests are practically your grade so be careful and give yourself a few days to study. It's definitely passable, and at least the tests are multiple choice.
Tests are difficult
This class is absolutely insane. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING IT ONLINE!!!
This is the hardest class for business majors. 4 exams, each count as 20% of your grade, so exams are 80% of your overall grade.. impossible to get an A. Got 2 Cs and a B on exams and even a 100 on the final won't get me an A. Take at another school if possible or abroad.
Coming from a person that studies everyday and puts a lot of work in, this class will make you feel like trying isnt even worthwhile. The tests dont reflect the homework or study guides, and especially if you take it online (which most do) you have to put in so much extra work. FSU really needs to find more FIN teachers.
I only passed because I used Skoolers tutoring. I didn't use them at first and got a D and D on the first 2 tests. Got up to a B on the third and waiting to take the final. She does offer 2 points extra credit but will round grade only to the first DECIMAL place. 100% on hw is equivalent to a 100% on a test as both are weighted 20%.4 tests+weeklyHW
Class is not very hard. Go to skoolers and study the math problems. the conceptual questions are very easy with if you know anything about finance. No reason anyone should get below a B,
Didn't watch one lecture all year, get the Skoolers packet. Pretty sure I heard this was her last year but if not, get the spoolers packet.
She told a student to ask the GroupMe because she didnt know the answer! Final Grades didnt add up, but who knows she deleted the canvas card the day of the exam! Definitely would Not take this class with her.
