This is guy is your typical pocket protector wearing math nerd (literally!). His tests are very hard. His class is very boring. Don't take him.
make sure you are ready to work. avoid if you don't know how to do calc by hand. he does not allow calculators. his tests are extremly difficult
He can be very rude to his students. He is helpful but he does not take any extra time beyone his office hours to help. His test will test the best. Not very many people do well. His word questions alway have something to do with Star Wars etc.
lax is not your best math teacher. he goes way too fast for his own good, and he makes you feel stupid if you ask questions. he feels the need to teach math the completely PC way.. he makes things more complicated than they should be. do not take him
The hardest and most demeaning teacher you may ever take. If you want to feel stupid then take him, if you dont care about your own feeling, take him. He can be very rude to students and it is obvious he doesnt care.
Lax is great. He goes a little fast, but that's just a challenge to pay attention. His tests are hard, no doubt, but not unreasonable. He has more office hours than any teacher I've ever had, and is very receptive outside office hours. Good teacher.
He may seem a little fast at first but you get used to it right away. The class is just as hard as any other math class. I scored 70 percent on an exam but got a B because he grades on a curve if the majority of the class missed a specific problem.
Expect to remember every theorem ever used in previous math courses. Nice guy, typical math/science nerd. will give you the easiest examples for notes, and give you the hardest problems ever on tests. Goes WAY too fast. stay away.
He does not grade homework, so you will be doing TONS of it and not get any credit for it. No calculators, no formula sheet on tests, so expect to memorize all formulas! He is hard because the class is based on tests only and then they are really hard!
It's a pretty hard class to begin with. He goes a bit fast. Tests kinda hard. Very helpfull though and the curve will save your life.
He goes really fast, but knows what he's talking about. tests are really hard.
Hardest math teacher I ever took. Goes over a lot of straightforward examples from the book but gives his own, very difficult problems on the exams. No calculators, books or notes which is typical of such a class but the exams are very difficult! Must memorize formulas.
I took his classes 20 years ago, I went on to get my PhD and he is one of the best math teachers I ever had. If you are a good student and want to learn and go further in math he is likely still the best instructor on campus. His classes are difficult only because he pushes his students to really understand what they are doing.
The subject matter was/is difficult. Dr. Lax is a great teacher, expects you to work hard. I thought his lectures were clear and helpful. Don't ask stupid questions or you get that 'look'. He genuinely cares about his students (called me when I missed a class period) and wants you to learn the material. Exams are tough. Work hard you'll be fi
A nice professor. His test is very difficult. You have to work very hard in order to get an A in his class.
I took this class on the recommendation of my Calc I professor, who said Dr. Lax was good. And he is good, but he goes very fast -- he seems to assume that you can understand everything he says. His tests are difficult, at least one level above any of the homework. Average grade in my class was 40 out of 100. I struggled just to get a C (60/100).
I took him for math 364B and 323 back in 1985! He inspired me to become a professor of mathematics. I've been one for 16 years now and I still model my teaching after his. He's the best! He really cares!!
Excellent teacher. He cares about all of his students... Tests are very hard but if you do homework and understand every single problem that he assigned you will get B if not A. Recommended
perfect instructor. dont forget it's an upper division course, you have to do some work. just do and understand all the homework problems, you'll be ok. tests are little bit hard, but he curves after all. nice teacher, very helpful. Recommended for sure!
Dr. Lax is wonderful! He made Math 361B extremely easy for me. His lectures were clear, he knew what he was doing. He is an applied mathematician who makes theoretical math fun and easy to understand. His choice of textbooks is great: not only are they good, but also cheap. I highly recommend you to take him for upper level math.
Very helpful professor, nerdy type of guy. He tries to make the class fun sometimes with his vampire or robot voice, but come on, its calculus. but tests are hard and lets you know this the very first day. really helpful, clear and friendly. Awesome curve, a guy got a 68% and got an A- on a test, (go figure)
Great professor. Very clear lectures, very helpful. Can't say he's easy though.
Teacher is very fast. He sometimes skips steps. You have to figure out the steps he did on your own unles syou ask him during HW question time. In all he is a good teacher. If your not really into math stay away. If your confident about math then Lax is for you. If I had to take him again I would and get the A this time.
I guarantee the first day of class will by the fastest/craziest notes you've ever taken. Goes through 2-3 sections/class. 1-2 examples/topic. really hard. people seem to like him but my friend and I (both math majors) couldn't handle his snobbish attitude and lack of personal skills. I recommend Valentini
Excellent teacher The first few days of class tho are definitely a wake up tho, he goes through sections very quickly. Tests are fairly straightforward and there'll be a few hw questions on them. 4 exams & a final, so it seems like youre always studying, but this is very useful for the final. His class takes a lot of work but if you try its not bad
Wonderful teacher! Very fast!!! He goes through notes for about 2 weeks then gves the whole class about a week to ask questions and catch up. His test problems are difficult, but if you truly understand the material then you will do fine. The curve helps since everyone usually struggles in his class. But he knows almost everything.
He is a difficult professor. His tests are long and hard. You really have to study in his class if you want an "A". He goes through the material fast. Your grade is only based on tests. Sometimes I felt like he was mocking his students. I didn't like him and I didn't enjoy his class. There are better math professors.
Extremely difficult professor. The exams were really hard.
I do agree that he is DIFFICULT, but all his tests are curved and he's ALWAYS available for office hours. For finals once he came in on the weekend! He genuinely cares, but if you suck at math you are going to have a hard time. If you are decent and put a lot of studying into the class, you will pass. PLUS hes HOT! ;-P
This is the best math teacher at CSULB iff you are a math major. If you're not, stay away; he's hard. But if you are, he is going to give you the best background for later classes and you will really understand the material. YOU DO HAVE TO WORK HARD but it's totally worth it and he will go above and beyond to help you if you try.
I took him for 364a/b and 361a. I def cant say hes easy but hes always available for office hours and he curves all exams. His final for 361a was KILLER. It was probably the hardest final of my life!! Do your homework, go to class and office hours and you'll either pass or do better!
Dr.Lax is a really great professor, the class is ridiculously hard! Your grade in this class is based on the 4 midterms and the final. Do the homework(even though it is never checked), go to class, adn ask questions. If he likes you and you work hard he will probably bump up your grade at the end. He's sweet and helpful and enjoys his work
I do agree that his class is not easy. His tests are difficult but till this point in the course I feel like I have learned a lot and my math skills improved. He is a great professor and is even holding office hours on a Sunday before finals. Hint: Tests are curved ;)
Incredible Professor! Easy to feel discouraged and overwhelmed on the first day. That's the mistake I made in 364A, and ended up failing. Took him again for 364B, didn't let myself get discouraged, and it turned out great! Really cares about his students, and makes the class a blast! Ask questions and DO THE HOMEWORK, and you'll be fine!
He is looking to see if you are trully dedicated to being all you can be. If he see that you are willing to work hard he will bump up your grade so even if you fail your first test you can still get an A!!! He is very good at figuring out who is fake too.
Good Prof. Does not dumb down this difficult subject at all, which shows a great deal of respect for the student. I appreciate that.
Dr. Lax is absolutely the best professor at CSULB. If you're willing to work hard, you'll pass and you'll learn A LOT. If you aren't, take another teacher. He'll go above and beyond to help every student who wants to learn. It's very difficult to get an A, but if you do, you'll be more proud of it than any other.
I really liked this teacher. He makes things easy to and he will go over as many problems as he can until you understand the material. He is also just a really nice person...I accidently slept past my alarm on finals day and he called me and woke me up and allowed me to still come a take it. I recommend his class.
He is a great math teacher if you actually want to commit to learning math. Must do homework to have a chance, do harder ones twice if u want an A. Treats students like adults and does not collect HW or quiz, four closedbook difficult tests (nice curve tho),final. No attendance but class is essential.goes over tons hw probs and clearly. Good guy.
I like Professor Lax. I think that the perfect word to describe him is: "fair". The topics on the exams are clearly stated (well, there were some unexpected problems). He grades really fairly too, so there really isn't much success in trying to argue for more points. Above all: DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. EVERY PROBLEM!...& you'll do really good.
Everyone has it right: he's a HARD professor. Good guy, he means well, but he should not make activity session mandatory. he should also improve his social skills toward the students. he can be demeaning in office hours, at least in my experience. let him know lecture 3/week is too much when taking chem and physics! so study EVERYDAY, period!
He explains everything well. Make sure you do all the homework and you can pretty easily get an A. He will go the extra mile to teach you if necessary. He's a very fair grader as well so TAKE HIM!
After I took class with him ten years prior I looked him up to beg for a recommendation for grad school; he had all my grades recorded for just such a case. He really left an impression on me, especially when we calculated the trajectory of a kryptonite cannonball during the Battle of Naboo (test Qs tend to be scifi scenario based, I loved it)
Lax's 361A class is the hardest undergrad math class. The homework/quizzes recieve no credit. He only grades the 3 exams and 1 final. If you have good consistency in your exams he'll bump you up. He is REALLY helpful in his office hours & has study groups for exams. I got an A, because i overstudied. Understand ALL the material/theorems to do well
LAX is awful. yes his lectures are crystal clear, but test are very hard. what good is him being helpful with the HW and questions if the test are much more harder.if you want to pass with a high grade, hire a private tutor and add a extra 30hrs a week to study.its not fair that he always taches 364B. he takes off alot of points(big time)on exams.
Brilliant, but HARD professor. Only 3 exams and 1 final. Exams are curved. He's a fair grader. Points are given where they're earned. Overall, he's just tough. He can be harsh, but he means well. He wants you to understand, and if you ask for help, he's there. Just don't be stupid about what you're asking, and be prepared to study EVERY DAY!!
Best professor ever. He cares a lot about his students. First week can be overwhelming but it'll get better. Tests are hard but not impossible. Take him.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Ive had some pretty tough professors but Dr. Lax was by far the hardest but the greatest. His lectures are crystal clear and he definitely genuinely cares about the students. You may hate him when it test time but theres a generous curve that comes along with it. If you want to become a great calc student. Take this professor.
HE CURVES MORE THAN A RAINBOW! Homework isn't mandatory, but all his tests are basically like the homework assignments sooo do them and understand them! Not hard to get an A if you prepare correctly for the tests.
Be prepared to put in timeandwork. Maybe the best professor at LB, lectures are clear, there's a fair curve.Day before the exam he outlines the exam(extremely useful) day after he solves the problems. I took 244&370A with him in the same semester and passed both w/ A's despite getting a C- in my 1stexam in 370A.Looking forward to take 380 with him.
Teaches a bit fast, but you'll catch on eventually if you do the work. Homework not required, but highly recommended. Most of the time, he just sums the topic up briefly, but if you have any questions, he will go over them. Some may say the exams are hard, but I think they're really similar to the homework. It's worth it to take this class.
One of the best. He is CRYSTAL CLEAR. He does have a bit of a monotone voice, though. His homework is extremely helpful, although he usually assigns 2+ hours worth every meeting. He curves reasonably. His tests are not bad as he outlines them one class meeting before the test and there are never any surprises. Highly recommended!
Dr. Lax is an amazing professor. He cares not only about his students, but also the subjects that he teaches. I took him for Calc 2 and am planning to take him for 3. Very clear in his lectures and always available for questions or office hours. Tests can be a bit heavy and hard, but they are doable and usually curved. Highly Recommended (:
Dr. Lax is as good as it gets. If you want to learn math well, you definitely have to take it with him. I was weak in calc, and he intimidated me with the speed at which he teaches. DO THE HW. Took him during the Summer; 4 exams, 2 finals. 2 exams per test day! He is no joke, but if you put the effort in, you'll get an A and know your stuff.
Doesn't collect Hw, but some test problems come from assignments, so do them. Tests were straightforward except for the final. The final was brutal. Try to get your grade up as high as possible before the final. Does curve heavily though.
Took him for both Calculus 2 and Applied Math I (and soon Calculus 3) and I've got to say, by the time you get through one of his classes, your math skills will have improved a lot. Moves quick, but he means well and wants you to learn. Difficult exams, but nothing that you haven't encountered in the homework (not mandatory) that he assigns. DO IT!
Teaches fast and homework isnt required, but do it anyways. Very merciful on test, gives plenty of partial credit and curves greatly. Grade based on 3 midterms, final, and improvement in course. Was able to get an A in the course with a D on the first midterm. Definitely would take him again.
Best type of prof for csulb students: lectures correspond to textbook chapters, but w/ step-by-step derivations and sample problems done. hw from book, test questions 100% similar to hw; no curveballs. large amt of material, but hw/test probs straightforward, unlike some math profs here who teach few key derivations in excruciating detail (shudder)
He's a really good professor. Throughout the semester he creates lists of definitions and formulas that you need to memorize. He assigns homework but doesn't collect it. If you do take this class, however, make sure to do it! He gives 3 tests and one final and part of the final grade is based on improvement. He could give more real life examples.
I love Lax. I had him for calc 2 and took him again for calc 3. The class is hard, challenging to be more clear. But, you will walk out of the lecture knowing the material better. Tests can be rough and heavy, but doable and highly curved. Lax is clear in lecture and cares about his students. Great Professor, but material can be tough for some.
He is a good professor who cares that you actually learn the material. His tests aren't that bad, mainly because he curves them. He teaches in a very systematic way, which you grow to like (especially if you take him for more than one course). I plan on taking him again for 364B. He is definitely one of my favorite professors here at CSULB.
Lax is honestly the greatest math professor I've ever had. Very clear, very helpful, is willing to explain anything in a nice manner, and honestly cares about his students and teaching. If you can get Lax, I DEFINITELY recommend him
Dr. Lax is amazing. Homework is not mandatory but if you want to do well on the exams do it. 20% of the exam is from the homework. His exams have problems similar to the homework but definitely harder. You cannot get by with not studying. Also go to class as he does take attendance although it's not mandatory. He really cares. You will love him.
Lax is so great. He knows everyone by name & he definitely cares about you if you care about the class. Please attend class as he will know if you're there or not. If you can take Lax, do so. Even though at first you might hate his way of teaching you will learn to love it. I definitely recommend taking. I'm regretting not taking him for Calc 3 :/
Best professor ever
Please, don't take this class like I did without first taking Math233. It won't be fun. Literally all of 233 prepares you for 361A. 247 (Lin. Alg. Intro) won't.
I, and others, have all agreed that we would not take this course with any professor other than Lax if given the choice. This guy's good.
Hands down, my favorite professor! I wish I could take him for every math class. After every course that I have taken with him, I walk out of the final feeling accomplished and impressed at how much I learned from him. He makes you work for your grade but he is very reasonable. He is always helpful in office hours!!
He is beyond amazing. I can not recommend Dr Lax enough. He has inspired me so much, Ive picked up an applied mathematics minor. Content isnt as hard as Calc 2.. think Calc 1 but in 3D. Do all the homework, go to every class and there is no reason for you not to get an A. He also grades on a curve. TAKE TAKE TAKE.
Lax is a great professor and truly wants students to learn. It took some time to adjust to his lecturing speed, but once you catch up everything is so clear. The homework assignments are long, but must be done to do well in the class.3 midterms and a final. THEY ARE TOUGH! He will throw curves, sinkers, and sliders. You will learn in this class.
recommend him!!!
Dr. Lax is extremely passionate about math. He just loves it plain and simple. But most importantly he's passionate about teaching his students. He is willing to help any and all students who ask for it. Your grade is based off of 3 exams. They're difficult but you can get an A if you put the work in. I will hopefully be taking Math 224 with him.
He is very good professor always very organize. But he speaks very quickly and always write lots of words on the broad. His exam one is touch compare to exam two and three. Final is tough also. But you can learn lots of math knowledge with you. I really recommend to take class with him because he makes the lecture very clearly.
Lax is a very nice guy as long as you are respectful and do your work. He will stay extra time during his office hours for you and has review sessions before every test so he can answer questions people might have. I am very happy I took this class with him. 361A wasn't easy with him so don't expect an A to be handed to you without trying.
I took this for Summer and it was a ton of work, but all very doable. We had 6 exams that were either medium difficulty or very difficult, but with little to no surprises. He teaches very well and gives you nice feedback on your exams so that you can keep your momentum or push a little harder next time. Not a mentor, just a good teacher.
Tough class great professor; enthusiastic explainer, Cares advises: sent email before class- what specific topics to study from Calc1 Recommend study group do NOT procrastinate reviews hw in class no webassign :D Clearly knows math some humor speedbearable optimistic test outline before test gives cheat sheets to study from 4 exams 1 cumulfinal
Hard tests. If you know the hw, the tests are just with a lot uglier and annoying numbers to deal with than the hw. Ask ANY KIND OF QUESTION YOU WANT ABOUT THE EXAM the class before, and he will answer it in front of everyone so it's fair (will not do this in OH). You can even ask things like "will we have to know pg.795 question 23 for the exam?"
Lax is the only teacher I would recommend for 361a or b. He is super helpful in office hours and curves tests. If you do your work and ask questions he will always do his best to make sure you do well. I learned a lot this semester and did well. That being said, the class is insanely stressful, but that is just because it's real analysis.
This class was super interesting and Lax is an excellent teacher. I learned a lot and Lax was always really helpful. Also it is really funny when he gets all excited about math. I would definitely recommend him. (Also do all the homework! Very similar to tests.)
Took for Calc 2 and 3 - took him again for good reasons. No mandatory homework: However, it is essential to passing the tests. He doesn't collect it so you have flexibility, but you definitely should be doing it for your own good. Exam-based class: 4 midterms and a final. If you do all the homework & understand it, you'll pass.
One of the best. very passionate about his class. explains really good. Cares about his students. gives very helpful handouts. The class on the other hand is found tough by many, but I can't imagine it any easier with another professor. To me it wasn't difficult; thanks to him. VERY FAIR WITH GRADING. Noticeably, he gives precise feedback on tests.
364B is a much harder class than 364A/370A, and you will need to put in a lot of work. Nevertheless Lax is the best prof. to take 364B with. While he does expect a lot from you, the material covered is for the most part very interesting and very useful for the sciences and engineering. Definitely not an easy class, but you get out what you put in.
One of the best profs I've had! Homework isn't mandatory, but essential if you want to pass the exams bc the questions are similar to the hw questions. No webassign! Class is based off of four exams and one final, all of them curved. He's very generous with partial points on the exams so always write something! and he answers any questions in class
Long, mostly boring lectures. Not great handwriting. Fair amount of hw that is not collected. Tests mostly similar to hw, and had at least a 10% curve on all test. Goes over some of hw at beginning of class and in office hours. Wants you to learn. Overall, would recommend him and take him again.
If you study well on your own, take this class. He doesn't grade homework, but do it to do well on the tests. Lecture is crazy fast. Write down everything on the board. He is very open to questions. The first month will probably scare you, but it gets easier. Curve is massive, often adding 20% to your grade.
He cares more about his students than any professor I know. 4 midterms, and he held review sessions the Friday before each exam to answer any questions we had on the material. Holds about 4 office hours a week and has office hours throughout finals week.
One of the best Math professors I've ever had. Lots of homework. Hard tests. Lectures really well but really fast. Study hard, go to his office hours, do homework, pay close attention to what he writes AND says during lecture, and you'll do well in 361A.
His tests are fairly difficult, but he curves them, and if you understand the homework problems, you'll be fine. 4 midterms, 4 definition quizzes, and a cumulative final. He holds review sessions on the Friday before every exam. Fantastic Professor! Really Caring! I learned so much from him. Wouldn't take Math 361 with anyone else.
My advice:Rehearse definitions regularly, and re-do homework/proofs in their entirety no matter how small of a mistake you make. Make a list of homework problems and highlight the ones with proofs. During review sessions, make sure to ask a breadth of questions instead of all parts(e.g a-g) of one problem to make the most of the time he provides.
Class has 2 quizzes, 4 exams, 1 cumulative final. Curves for each are massive often 2 letter grades. HW is not mandatory but 20 % of the exam problems come from it. Open to questions though he lectures really fast so write everything. Recommend you take him if this is your 2nd time taking calc 2. If you make an effort you'll pass. Great class.
One of the best professors! Lectures fast but well and clearly. Tough but caring. Grades fairly based on efforts. Curves each exam. Lots of homework. 4 exams and a cumulative final. One definition quiz before each exam. You'll learn a lot from him. Do homework. Study and understand definitions, theorems, homework, and proofs and you'll do just well
Very difficult course. Lax curves like crazy, but I feel like sometimes, he writes the exams anticipating failure from his students. Don't ask simple questions otherwise he might make you look like an idiot with his smirks that he makes.
Do. Not. Be. Too. Proud. To. Ask. Questions. Please ask questions if you are confused about the slightest thing. I did very well and still asked questions, and I noticed all too often(being nosy) that people who did average or below average were the ones who did not ask questions. He is there to help! Practice and persevere! Be engaged in class.
Lax was a great professor for Calc 2. I often heard from my peers that Calc 2 was quite difficult but Professor Lax made it easy to understand. All tests are curved and there are 4 exams all semester. Also, no WebAssign. He does assign homework problems from the book however, and you should do them. The problems from the homework are on tests.
Dr. Lax is definitely one of the toughest professors at this school. He is very knowledgeable and wants you to learn the material well not just pass the course for credit. If you want to learn and have a strong math foundation then definitely take him. Has 4 exams, homework isn't mandatory but if you can do them then you at least can get a B.
What I really liked about Dr. Lax is that he believed in me. He seems to believe in all of his students, but when I did poorly on the first exam in 361A, he wrote "I believe you can do better on the next exam." I took that to heart and worked my heart and mind out and improved greatly thereafter in that course and other courses. Thank you, Dr. Lax.
4 midterms,1 final. Hw is not mandatory(no webassign),20% of the exam are hw problems but he assigns so many that you can never recognize them on the test. 70% of the lecture are def. you can find in the book,30% are ex. Heavy curve on all exams, lectures are messy & he makes many mistakes. But he wants everyone to pass, very doable class , study!!
Prof. Lax doesn't give WebAssign HW, but does give HW from the book. Not mandatory but highly recommend because some of the HW is in the tests. My only complaints are that he lectures fast and only grades on 4 exams and the final. However, a good choice to have as he's knowledgeable about Calculus.
He's a brilliant man. Super nice and very helpful. Make sure you do all the homework he assigned, 80% of test are like the hw. Ask him questions and go to office hour. His curves are amazing (88 was an A+). Purchase the book since hw are from the book. Attend all his lectures, ask questions if you need help. One of the best professors at csulb.
Extremely difficult class. Curved grading scale that is pretty lenient, but the material is just hard. Super difficult exams that are more than just problem solving- they'll make you think and use theorems. Cares about his students and want them to succeed. Take detailed notes- much of the later material isn't in the textbook.
had a pretty good time in class. his tests aren't hard if you do his homework and watch professor leonard on youtube. his curves are very generous and he's a pretty nice professor. i was really successful in his class asking questions about homework and redoing the assigned hw before exams.
Dr Lax is a great math professor with a clear teaching method. He has a clear grading system which is based off of 4 test, 1 final. He'll even outline the test for you. Attendance is not mandatory. Homework is optional but for each of his test, he'll include 2 problems that are straight out of the homework. No quizzes. Do HW you pass.
A shining example of a professor who is invested in his students. His exams and the material are stupid difficult, but he curves the exams heavily. Homework isn't grades but is necessary to survive the class. Goes out of his way to host study sessions outside of class before the exams- really cares and wants to see his students succeed.
Dr. Lax is without a doubt one of the best math profesors at CSULB. His exams are incredibly tough, so he curves as a result. If you do bad, he'll leave you a note of encouragement for the next exam; he legitimately cares about his students. Do the homework correctly, ask for help, and your work will pay off on the exam. 10/10 would take again.
He is very passionate about teaching. I just couldn't keep up with the pace he was going at as I am a very slow learner. I already expected it to be very difficult going in especially as we had to transition to an online class. He admitted that his skills in technology are lacking. If you can take his class go for it if you can keep up.
Dr. Lax is THE BEST. Math 361A/B is known to be a very challenging course & he acknowledges that. His exams were pretty fair, he grades leniently (gives partial credit) & curves the exams. As long as study hw, proofs & memorize and UNDERSTAND your defs & theorems, YOU WILL DO GOOD. He's always willing to help and he's very encouraging.
He places generous curves and is very fair on the exams. This is what made me successful: -Take his notes, follow examples -Do the homework before the next class & ask questions at the beginning of class (Slader is a great resource) -PRACTICE the homework problems before the test (the exams are basically homework) Do this and you'll pass easily!
This class is a pretty hard class not gonna lie but I dont think Lax made easier. 7 problems/ exam which he does curve. The transition to online wasnt easy. 2-3 problems from the HW are on the exam and maybe 1 theorem proof. Friday review session HELP SO MUCH! Ur sweat and tears will be worth it. Listen, I am sure if it were a regular in person class, Professor Lax would be a great teacher, however, I found it super hard to learn online with him. Chat is disabled, if you're like me and need to really think about the material during lecture he goes way too fast. I also fell behind really early, so decide what value my comments have.
Not an easy class, but he tried his best to teach, esp online. Do the hw, even if it's not part of your grade. 3 exams and a final. Go to the study sessions! also office hours!! If you dedicate time you'll pass. Every exam was graded on a curve. He makes dad jokes every so often lol
Dr. Lax was an excellent professor, exams and course material were tough but doing the optional hw and attending oh/review sessions helps a lot. Every exam, Dr. Lax leaves a note of encouragement for the next which is very reassuring. Do note that exams constitute a majority of your grade. Learned a lot and would take again for future courses!
Dr. Lax is a true G. That's all you need to know. Peace...
4 midterms, each 15% and final is 30. Optional homework but you have to be willing to do some or watch Prof. Leonard lectures on Youtube before each class, otherwise you will be so lost. Most of each class he does homework problems people asks for, later portion is spent lecturing which he is not great at (mostly writes down thereoms from the book)
361A is challenging, but Dr. Lax does everything he can to make it more approachable. I'm not the biggest fan of his lecturing style, but he makes up for it with many examples that are exactly like what you will see on the tests. Don't freak out about how hard the tests are, they are curved generously. Just answer what you can, 40% is like a C.
The reviews honestly deceived me. I see why people would like him as a professor. Personally he isn't a good lecturer and hard to understand since he doesn't explain what is he doing so I had to look in youtube for what he is teaching. You are only graded on exams and if youre bad at studying don't take him. Hw is optional.
I had a good experience taking his class for 361A. You are only graded by 3 exams and a final, all of which are quite difficult. I consistently scored in the 60's and received an A- so he curves generously. Each exam has two problems directly from the HW(around 20%-30% of the whole test) so study the HW well. Friday review sessions are helpful too.
Very fast paced and only lectures, even during activity. HW is not graded, but make sure to do it. Expects you to remember Calc 1, so if you take this class in the fall, I'd recommend refreshing your memory. Doesn't fully explain his steps (unless you ask him how) since he does a lot of mental thinking.
Goes super fast and doesn't explain things well. However, fat curve in the class. Just put in minimal effort and you will get an A or B. For example, my C's on exams curved to A's. Also doesn't do activity, just lectures. Gives clear outline of exams which is super helpful and HW that shows up exactly on exams which helps!
Tests were extremely difficult, everyone failed but he gave a very generous curve for every test (65 percent was a B plus) . Assigns lots of homework that is not graded but helpful to prepare for the exams. Your entire grade is based off of your test scores and he doesn't post grades online. You will need to spend lots of time studying to pass
Homework is assigned, but not graded. Recommedn doing them and asking questions. I wish I knew that before his class. He does not teach very well as he writes whatever is on his paper from previous notes. You cant read his writing. He does curve tests. If you can take someone else consider it.
I agree with previous poster that the reviews are deceiving. He is not the most approachable person and has a difficult time understanding student's confusions. The only up side I saw was that he graded exams with a lenient curve.
His tests are the only thing that count towards your grade. There is also one quiz that you will take on a series of tests. I was cocky, and I took this class because I excelled in Calculus 1. I got humbled hard after taking this class, and he was a good professor, but I wouldn't go through math hell all over again.
Has a huge curve on tests but makes tests much more difficult than the homework. Doesn't collect homework but you MUST NOT fall behind on it or else you're going to want to cry the day before tests. Half the class was gone by the end of the semester. He could get a bit angry sometimes. I felt his lectures never helped me learn but YouTube helped.
Genuinely the GOAT. He lectures fast&tests are hard but he does curve heavily. On each exam he will update you on how you're doing in the class and if he sees improvement throughout the semester he will give you points at the end. Hw isn't part of the grade but they're 1/5 of the test. He's very laidback and wants you to learn so ask questions.
Very knowledgeable in his craft. Classes are lecture heavy and is only graded on 3 exams and the final. Some leeway in the grading if you attend every class as he may bump you up a few percent. Very lenient grader and allows a lot of partial credit on exams. The homework he assingns are not mandatory but highly recommended. Goated professor ngl :)
The hw isn't graded but does help on exams. easy professor to understand
Professor Lax's class is a real challenge, but if you stay engaged and use tools like Unstuckstudy to supplement the textbook, you can succeed. Definitely expect a curve!
Lax is the GOAT! Best math professor I've had. Took him for Calc3 too and he's patient and a very caring prof. He curves HARD on his tests and it's similar to hw (which isn't for a grade but 1/5 of test) so definitely get it done. If you can take him do it you won't regret it. Helpful during office hours. You basically have to not try to fail.
took for 380 and 364B. DO NOT TAKE. OTHER REVIEWS ARE MISLEADING. all hw assignments are ungraded so your whole grade is based on exams which he makes extremely difficult. he will bully students for ex writing "F----" on your exam if you did bad. HE IS CRUEL. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPEND HOURS TEACHING YOURSELF THE MATERIAL
REVIEW ARE MISLEADING STAY AWAY FROM LAX'S CLASSES UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE BULLIED AND TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING. he has spurts of anger, cant read his writing, his lectures are just derivations from the textbook, doesn't wait for student questions and then get frustrated when questions are presented. WILL NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS AGAIN
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! His lectures are so bad and just talks at you instead of teaching and won't answer questions. He does curve but his exams are wayyy harder than the homework. He's also extremely rude, he writes on the top of exams "Lets aim for a higher grade on the next exam" when he hands them back. Reviews are misleading, dont take his class!
Dr. Lax makes a tough class tougher than it needs to be. Lots of ungraded homework, and lecture aren't helpful but attendance mandatory. Exams are extremely hard but curved. No cheat sheets, calculators, or practice exams—just a general outline. You'll NEED to self-teach and SERIOUSLY commit time. Without that, you won't do well. I don't recommend.
Taking his class almost makes me want to change majors. Get ready to spend most of lecture deriving theorems you wont get taught to use. Homework is ungraded, grade only based on excruciating exams he “generously” curves. No cheat sheets, calculators, practice exams. Do yourself the favor and find another professor, otherwise be ready to self-teach.
Don't trust the reviews from 3/24/2025. Those are false. He goes over the material clearly and tells you what's on the exam. The exam questions are just like the homework. There is a very generous curve on exams, and he is very helpful during office hours. The only downside is that the grade is only based on exams, but the exams are very fair.
It is unfortunate because I wanted to learn. Dr. Lax just tells you the material rather than teach. The tests are heavily curved but I don't think that's a good thing. The homework is ungraded, so you really don't know if you did it right. I genuinely had a hard time in this class. It was unclear and the textbook is not easy to read. Do not take.
This is literally the most boring class I've ever had in my life. I fell asleep almost every day. Attendance and HW aren't required. He only grades on tests so if you mess up, or don't show up for important stuff you're screwed. Although, if you know the content, you can self study and only show up for the 4 tests and get an A.
If you're a decent test taker, I would absolutely recommend taking Dr. Lax. 4 tests and a final determine your grade, However, those tests are curved heavily. The homework is ungraded, but a decent number of the test problems are from the homework. If you're a decent test taker, I would absolutely recommend taking Dr. Lax.
