Nice teacher, i took him over the summer and it was a great, the test are easy and he even let us take 2 test home.
An excellent teacher!!
The teacher is great; excellent lecture; tests are okay; one of them was a take home test; and we got an extra credit worth 100 points; I took him in the summer! Great guy!
HAted this class. who knew what the hell he was talking about. He mumbles on and goes off topic all the time. Class was a waste of my time
one of if not the best professors on this campus. everyone should take him. best lecturer ever
great teacher, very passionate in a good way likes to have fun while he teachs not a very good writer on the board but a great class a lot of fun and not hard
Very passionate teacher..he gets really into his lectures. Sometimes he drags on for a long time, but he is really cool. He takes roll, but he was late all the time to my morning class. Study and you'll get an A.
you'll be expected to do a mock trial at the end of the term. there are only 4 tests, which includes a take home t/f test. the take home is a joke, in which only 5 is false. his tests are hard because he gives you a list of terms/key figures, in which you have to match. some terms are either not used or used more than once, which makes it hard.
MR.ROSS IS A GREAT TEACHER & IS VERY HUMOROUS IN HIS LECTURES AND U INDEED HAVE 2 DO A MOCK TRIAL & WRITE A PAPER, THE MOCK TRIALS AT FIRST SOUND DIFFICULT BUT IF THE PEOPLE IN YOUR GROUP ARE WILLING 2 WORK 2GETHER, THEN IT'S WORTH IT, TEST ARE EASY AS LONG AS U STUDY!!
He is a joke. Unprepared and a sorry teacher. I got an A from his class and have no idea why. The assignment at the end of year is a presentation in which he gives everyone an A even if they don't work for it. His tests are hard and unclearly states. Thank heavens I'm no longer in his class.
i loved it! he's really funny but kind of scatterbrained...he was always about 14 minutes late so we never got to leave...he let our class out early alot...his tests werent hard you just have to match or guess T/F...i never opened my book and i got an A
This teacher is a mess. He is unorganized and goes off topic onto a subject that is political and has little to nothing to do with what you are tested on. The tests are vague and he doesn't like questions. Everything I learned in this class solely came from the book.
A + If you want to improve your GPA take him EASY CLASS.....I got A without studying too much......he gave the whole class extra credits and he does nt care about the attendance at all.....I always was late for his class!!!
Dr. Ross is lively, enthusiastic, and humorous. If you're looking for a chill n easy class...take this!
as long as you study the studyguide he hands out you will be fine. Only one paper to write at the end of the semester.
its been a couple years since i had his class..but it sounds like nothing has changed.. he missed several classes during the semester... i didnt seem to do too well on the paper and on the exams (never got higher than a C), yet got an A in the class....
not organize teacher but it is good for students who want easy teacher and don't want to reach too much history book.
This professor is extreamly unorganized, he is a nice guy but is all over the place. He lectured the same lecture 3 weeks in a row word for word and it was a once a week class. Hes never at his office hours, is always late and absent a lot.
Very unorganized and I don't feel like I am learning anything. He's nice and funny but his lectures are poor and his tests are ALL matching. 3 "quizzes" they are worth the same as the final. One final and one class project.
his lecture is very funny and easy. Also he is very kind. if u wanna get A, take this class.
Awesome teacher.. i had him for summer 2007... and im glad i took his class.... hes fun...funny and if you think history will bore you then he might change your point of view.... i would take him again if i ever need to...
GREAT & funny prof!!! Hist 10 POINTERS: 1) Stay on top of things & you'll earn an A. 2) Courtroom Resolution: Read your Q carefully! Cover the Present as well as Past & connect the two w/ a witness or hard facts. 3) Same w/ your position paper. ... I earned an A on all these. Great guy! Great class. You'll re-discover History! Earn it so it sticks.
Ross was very unorganized even though he supposedly has a PhD from Cornell! His quizzes were lazy and thrown together and all of them were matching. This is the only C I have ever received. I am in the Honors Program and would never recommend this professor.
He wasn't a very good teacher. His tests were unclear and very hard. I have a C in his class and I probably have one of the highest grades in his class. His tests can be tricky and they dont focus mainly on a persons knowledge of history.
Hot mess!! This class was very frustrating. He is very knowledgeable but his teaching style is all over the place. There is no structure to this class. His test were also very hard even if you study. He lectures about the same thing over and over and therefore does not cover much. Take him if you are ok with those faults.
great professor. for those who didn't understand or hated him was because they have no sense of humor. one of the better teachers at LBCC. made history enjoyable. highly recommended.
Wouldn't recommend this teacher. He knows his stuff, but his lectures are all over the place. The study guide helps to prepare for tests, but his test suck. Wither t/f or matching, and he likes to make them most difficult. A True/False questions with 4 parts and grey areas, leave a lot of room for mistakes. I was a 4.0 student and got a B in th
I've had him twice! Hes a good teacher! A bit unorganized and often doesn't show up to class! Not and easy A but definitely not difficult to receive! Hes laid back sometimes boring and off topic but its college! Hes not the best at City but no where near the worst!
Ross is a wonderful teacher! He is so FUNNY and ANIMATED when teaching. Sometimes can go off topic but he's hilarious. I found out later that he used to be the dean of a few other colleges before and has alot of experience teaching. He really made me enjoy this history class. Take advantage of his office hours he's really laid back and chill to ta
Ross is an awesome lecturer and made class fun. Be forewarned the tests are not easy, you got to study.
VERY FUNNY INSTRUCTOR! MAKES THE LECTURE REALLY FUN. HE DOES THIS WEIRD THING WITH HIS HAIR N ITS KINDA DISTRACTING, BUT ITS ALL GOOD THO. HE ALSO HAS U DO A "MOCK-JURY" TYPE PRESENTATION IN GROUPS. REALLY EASY. I GOT AN "A". WUT U REALLY HAVE TO WATCH OUT FOR ARE THOSE TESTS. APART FROM THAT--ITS EASY
his class is kool.the test are a little tricky but one bad thing is he never come to class so i HOPE everybody pass this class.but like i said he is really nice and his class is fun when we have it
HE IS A CRUDDY TEACHER THAT CANNOT TEACH AND IS UTTERLY USELESS.
absolutely HORRIBLE teacher! don't get me wrong lectures were interesting but the tests have nothing to do with them! the mock trial was RIDICULOUS if you get african american reparations you better watch out because he will tear you apart and give you a bad grade!
Ross seems like a cool cat when you first meet him. Well, he's not that cool. He didn't hand a single test back to his students the entire course of the semester then handed out grades that had no backing. Doesn't respond to his e-mails either. His lectures are funny , but do nothing to help the student gain knowledge. Horrifying professor!
Interesting Lectures. Hated the tests. But he is a nice guy
Mr. Ross is a sweet man n makes history very understandable, especially with his drawings hahahah. Dont test his patience though. Tips on his quizzes, he gives you terms so do the 5 W's(who,what...) on each terms n youll do fine. its not a hard class.mock trail, on the comment below i got a lecture on af amer. trial lol accuarte stats r a must!
He is the always unprepared for the lectures he gives, he makes it up as he goes along and when you take the test none of the information that he gave you is on there. do not waste your time taking a class with him!
When I heard about this site, this is the first professor I felt that I had to rate. The only thing he does correct is give you interesting facts. I was disappointed with his grading system, his tests, and his projects; even though I received an A in the class. This is very difficult for me to write about, in otherwords it was a nightmare!
This Teacher comes off as a fun nice guy for the first few weeks but soon reveals himself as a sadistic man who has no real interest in actually teaching history. His test answers do not always match with whats in the book, and he tries to teach that we all came from Africa and that Jesus was black. I would not recommend him.
he thought well beginning of semester , after showed no interest. very disappointed
STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER!!!!!!! i swear hes the worst! yes he does come off as being a cool dude but not ull get a reality check! he missed class so much! if u like to teach yourself then this is the class for u but stay away lol i mean it the class is pathetic and waste of money aand time!!!!!
First of all an EASY A! Professor Ross was greate at the beginning of the semester but HARDLY showed up to class with an excuse EVERYTIME. If he had a death in your semester than he had another death in my semester! Read the book, get your A for the History Requirement!
I took hist 27b. He doesn't respond to emails. He was absent alot. He forgot alot of things. If u study the study guide you'll get good grade on test, but usually puts other terms on test that weren't on study guide. Unorganized lecture, but very enthusiastic. Learned more from videos he brought. He might freak you out on the first day.
This teacher is crazy. He was absent for half of the semester and when half the class fails his test he tries to lecture us on it. At the start of the semester he was enthusiastic and seemed promising but then later he just gave up. He makes you do a mock trail which can be tricky to pass his exams rely on the book, yourself & get all the help u can
The worst professor I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES! His study guides do not match the chapters in the book, he misses class alot, his lectures are useless, and no-one participates in the final project. Unless you have a lot of time to waste, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES! Awful, awful, awful.
WORST teacher ever! Talks to himself alot like bum on the street. HE's CRAZY. I passed but didnt learn much. He did catch my interest in history cause he brings up issues today but still... stay far away.
He makes students feel stupid for asking questions. He definitely gives special treatment to favorites. His quizzes are confusing; they are all matching terms to definitions. His lectures are very brief while the quizzes and exams are intricate.
Don't take Melvin Ross if you can help it. Lectures are vague but tests are very specific. He does make you feel stupid for asking questions, and he's very stubborn. He comes to class 10 minutes late. He repeats phrases like "See, the thing is..." 2x or more. I don't know if I'll pass or not. Never again.
He sucks bad man. He will find a reason not to like you. the class is easy but hes not a good teacher at all! Trust me you will regret taking this class. He likes to argue as well so dont ask a lot of questions haaaa.
I love history, but this class was just horrible. He gives study guides but it doesn't really matter because they rarely appear on tests. He sometimes doesn't show up to class, and he likes to repeat the same lectures over and over again. If you do end up taking this class, my best advice is to read the book and don't rely solely on lectures.
Great professor. I like that he encourages you to study the book on your own for the tests rather than hold your hand and give you an easy way out. Those that complain that its too hard just don't study hard enough. I learned a lot about the colonial period thanks to this professor
Personally I think Mr. Ross makes history broil in your bones! I think he made his lectures very educational yet very informative. He gives you a study guides and what is on the study guide is on the test.. what he lectures is on his test. So you need to pay attention in class. Study.. this is a college level class!!
Very unorganized. Stay on top of your game because he isn't on top of his. Maybe a bad semester for him but he postponed majority of our assignments and then just sprung it on us at the last minute. Very informative and makes his lectures intriguing. Just study and do the work and you'll pass. Make note of his lectures, it will be on the test too.
He's not the BEST teacher ,but he prepares you for college life. You can pay attention to the lectures but majority of the test and quizzes are in the books. The study guides Prof. Ross give are useless if you don't study with them the "right" way. Do your work and stay on top of things and you should get the deserved grade.
Spring 2012..Prof Ross is a very interesting man. Lots of humor, and great stories to tell (even when it has nothing to do with what he started off talking about....dadah dadah dadah, deedah deedah dee..you will only get that if you took his class!!!) Never lectured on the final unit, for the final, good guy bad teacher!
Great Professor, but Mr Ross is only for students who take education seriously and plan on going the distance in college. You have to stay on top of lectures and do the reading at least 1.5 times to pass
This teacher will pester and taunt you with trick questions . If you care about your gpa see if there is a better teacher. If you take him study hard .
Worst history professor I've ever taken. Very unorganized, always arrives late, and cancels class quite often. When asking a question, instead of answering, he finds a way of making fun of you in front of the entire class. I don't know why he goes to "lecture", you pretty much teach yourself the material. I regret taking him and so will you.
The class material was great! However, Mr. Ross is very monotone and unorganized. He does't lecture on class material very often which makes studying for tests very intense. Not much HW or classwork and 4 (unorganized) tests. Be sure to study the book and you will pass.
He is very interesting when it comes to lectures but as other reviewers mention, he likes to pick on students and make you look feel stupid in front of everyone. He seems to enjoy making students look bad making his class an unpleasant experience. Just plain rude and demeaning in my opinion
He is very animated in his lectures and keeps history interesting. His only downfall is his attitude, he likes to pick on students and make them fell stupid. I was one of the few people in his class that was getting a good grade but he singled me out and made it seem like I was slacking off when I was actually studying my butt off for that class! Made it a terrible experience for me to be in class. I was contemplating dropping the class even though I was getting a high grade
Rude, antagonizing and disrespectful to students
Funny guy tells alot of stories. He basically gave the grade away I really didn't learn much. he gives study guides out follow that and you should be good. try to attend every class because some things on the test will be from the lecture only.
Awesome professor,I learned and improved on my study skills while in his classes. Read the text, show up to class,do the study guides, and aid in class discussions and you shall be fine. I now attend school on the east coast and the study skills I learned in his courses have helped me achieve A's here as well.
Funniest teacher I've taken at LBCC! I loved this class. The group project was so much fun. I recommend Professor Ross, he's a great teacher. (:
Mr. Ross is a very charismatic good willed teacher. He really tries to get you interested by being animated, and paraphrasing the stories. Paying attention during class helps massively as the tests mostly come from lectures. he even branches off topic slightly to tie all the loose ends together. highly recommended.
Very interesting teacher. I've never had anyone like him before. Definitely a big picture thinker.
Professor Melvin Ross has a different teaching aesthetic than most of the other professors on campus. I received a B in his course. He has exams with one group presentation. Read everything he tells you to read and if he gives you a study guide, just do it without complaining ! He grades very hard on the group project, so DO IT WELL !
I took a once a week 3-hr class with Ross. He showed up late, told irrelevant stories, and was often unprepared. He uses phrases like "we'll talk about that later" or "you know how it goes" when referring to the history lesson + never talks about it again. Said certain things weren't going to be on the final that were. I was confused all the time.
Professor Ross is rude and not helpful. Gives study guide but not everything on the study guide is on the test and notes only help 20% on test. Is not willing to help when you ask , Need goodexcellent study skills for this class. I would not recommend You taking this class at all. We had 2 quiz so far and 6 peopled pass 25 fails. 34 class fail
Is he funny and cool? yes, yes, and yes. Are his lectures interesting? yes, yes, and yes. He's a cool guy, but he glosses over his lectures with anecdotes and he seems to always repeat parts of the same lecture for weeks at a time. The quizzes are very hard because its based on the book, and not the lectures. Take at your own risk.
Didn't like how he shows up late. Lectures help, but 4 tests are more on the book. For study guides, don't just look at one term and study. READ THE WHOLE CHAPTER and annotate so start early! I looked up each term and got 62 on exam, read each chapter w annotations, got 94%. He's funny, interesting, but don't rely on his lectures to pass the test
Professor Ross is nice and entertaining, but his "lectures" are filled with personal anecdotes and aren't very informative; attending class felt like a waste of time. You'll have to do a LOT of textbook reading on your own in order to pass the tests. He was frequently late and cancelled on us a couple times which made things even harder...
I really loved this class, but you have to work. Prof. Ross is an interesting, engaging speaker, but his handwriting is pretty bad and he doesn't use PowerPoint, so if you have to see notes to understand the lecture, you may want to avoid him. It's a tough class, but if you read the book, show up to class, and use the study guides, you'll be fine.
This teacher is very funny and entertaining. You think you're actually learning until he gives you his first "quiz" that has 60 questions on it of things he NEVER discussed. If you're like me and dont have unlimited time to study the book in extreme detail, avoid this teacher. Not a fan of professors who test on material they dont cover in class
Professor Ross was unprepared for class a majority of this semester. He is rude, insults and disrespects students. Lectures are entertaining but not helpful for quiz. He has no passion nor desire to teach. Demean and degrade should not be permitted in the classroom. Students are intimidated constantly.
Was hardly ever prepared for class, Everything on the test was straight from the book so make sure you study more from your book than what he discusses in class. Also he doesn't use power-points or work sheets to lecture he write is lectures on the board and it is not legible.
Read every chapter and take notes (if you can read them). His study guide was off on the key terms vs. the textbook. Sometimes Ch. 2 key terms are found in Ch. 1 or 3. He's not very organized and lectures are based on story-telling. He also draws maps and writes on the board (ILLEGIBLY). Doesn't respond to emails, so get classmates' contact info.
Good guy, but DO NOT take him. He gives a "study guide" of terms, but doesn't specify what you need to know. His notes on the board are all over the place. Tests are matching and true/false (hardest part). When he asks the class a question he steers you toward the wrong answer and makes fun of you for it, which just wasted time. Always late.
Professor Ross is an amazing teacher! I took him over the summer and got an A in the course . He cares about his students and their education, and truly makes history interesting . He hands out study guides and lectures in class. As long as you read the chapters, participate in class and study you'll just fine. ITS COLLEGE, it requires work.
He is the most funniest and realest professor I've ever had! Test were tough and lectures were interesting and informative
Professor Ross, A Professor who gives respect, no profanity in class used, he has good values and principals. He wants you to LEARN ask questions get involved. Lectures that he gives you retain you class readings will his lectures gives a stronger connection with the material. You will enjoy his class and he will inspire you on a regular basis.
Whatever you do, don't take this class. This dude is all over the place. I'm passing but I hate this class.
Entertaining professor but not the best professor
I took his class over the summer and your grade is based of 3 quizzes and a final exam. He hands out study guides with EXACTLY what is on the tests. I never had to open the book, just study the terms and you'll be guaranteed a B or higher. Professor Ross constantly hands out extra credit with participation, easy class and he'll make you laugh.
I took him for this summer. He's a good professor but not the best. There are 3 quizzes and one final exam. Just study his lecture and you will pass the exams at least C but u have to read a textbook and get the information that relates to study guide.
Ross is a little crazy... but in a fun way. In my experience he gives the students who are POC more attention, he does not favor them or give them an advantage, but he does interact with them in a more friendly manor. As long as you study and are okay with a quirky sense of humor this class will be a breeze.
Take notes. Confusing at times always ask questions he likes to talk. No patience for childish behavior. Easy A just take notes and read book. Does give study guide. Matching/ true false. 2 papers. Group project.
To call professor Ross; lazy, unorganized, sloppy and unprofessional would be understatements ! if you want a good thorough history lesson take robin spence or mary marki. any-who he gives the same final a paper on glory or patriot. his test are very easy just read the material you'll be fine. he's not interesting. he's not specific in his lectures
Mr. Ross is a great teacher. I have taken Hist 10, Hist 27A & Hist 27B with him and have passed all these courses. He is a little on the talkative side and likes to joke a lot but most of his stories relate to the topic in some way. He has 3 test plus a final which makes up your grade. Id suggest read chapters ahead and take notes.
Mr. Ross is a very knowledgeable man. Ive taken a few classes with him in which he has taught me a lot. Read and review key terms and youll be fine on the test although they are easy trick questions. Hes a nice/funny person dont take anything serious. Dont be afraid to ask questions
His class is super easy. As long as you read and study you will be fine. There are multiple quizzes, a midterm, and a final. All super easy if you learn the material and do well on the homework assignments.
