Would not recommend at all.
I LOVE Mr. Chen. He is the most adorable teacher ever! He cares a lot about teaching and is always willing to help. His english is actually pretty decent, and he teaches what he is told (He is given the information by a higher educator). If you ask him questions after class he gets sooo happy to answer them. He loves teaching and math!
You get your tests back and get to keep them. At the beginning he assigned more homework, but then it turned into having a homework assignment for each test. The final was cumulative; however, we got to use a notecard full of equations. There was bonus potential on the final by attending class as well.
The content isn't hard but not the best teacher. Basically copies everything from book. Never explains in a way that makes it easier to understand.
Thank god I took this class in high school because if I hadn't I'm pretty sure I would have gotten a C in this class. Lecture is boring and he doesn't explain anything well. I would skip class and have someone sign me in and then teach myself the material because he is super monotone and quiet. Definitely not meant to be a teacher:/
The class material itself was really easy. He has an accent so it's hard to understand him but his notes are really clear and helpful and he puts them online for you. He has homework due every day of class. Attendance is mandatory but when I took it he let us skip class if we finished the homework before class with an A or above.
I never saw him the entire semester; we only talked through email when he had announcements. I wouldn't consider him my professor, I received help from the workers in the mtlc lab. The work was a bit demanding, but you can work at your own pace so that's a great help.
Dr. Chen is pretty cool. He has a Chinese accent, but it isn't very hard to understand him. The class was super easy and he almost always let you go 20 minutes early. He's really nice and almost always in the MTLC. The material is easy, there's no need to buy a textbook, all the homework and tests are online. Solid easy A and easy math credit.
This class is super easy. He gives you 3 drop quizzes, homeworks, and unexcused absences. And you have a drop test. All the homework and tests are online and it's such an easy A
This was one of my easiest classes. He really cares about math and is more than willing to help you. The software you use for homework is great because it really helps you learn the material. I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Chen is one of my favorite professors at UA and he is very easy to understand!
At first I didn't think I would enjoy Mengpu's teaching but he grew on me. He explains the fundamentals of everything he teaches. If you pay attention and ask questions, when you need to, you should be able to learn the material pretty well.
He's a good teacher himself. Homework isn't too hard, just make sure to go to class. I would recommend taking Math 125 at a community college where you will get handwritten tests and partial credit. I made a high A in AP Calculus in high school and I struggled taking these tests.
Great professor! There are a TON of extra credit opportunities for this class, so failing is kind of hard to do. Mr. Chen is very knowledgeable about the course, and always posts his notes online. As far as negative stuff, he's kind of a quiet speaker, so don't sit in the back if you have him.
Professor Chen is excellent. He is soft spoken so I wouldn't recommend sitting in the back of his class, but other than that he caters to you as needed. Extra 10% credit for turning in homework more than 24 hours early and for taking a test early. He connects the content to the real world. The homework is tedious but it helps with understanding.
I took Calc 1 in high school and this was a good refresher course. He posted all notes online, I didn't have to go to lecture once. Very fair grader but sucks at answering emails
Best math teacher for calculus. Every example he does is on his homework and you can get an 110% on every homework assignment. He also gives 10% extra credit on tests if you take them early. He goes everything that will on the test and most of the time its the exact same problem. attendance isn't taken and isn't apart of your grade.
Professor Chen is real diamond in the rough at UA, although he has a low rating on here, don't let it fool you. He is one of the best professors hands down. His lectures are strictly on how to do the homework assignments. Not only that, all the test reviews and tests are EXACTLY like the homework. You really have to try hard to not pass this class.
gives lots of bonus and the study guides are exactly like the test. I will take him everytime i can through Calculus. He is the GOAT.
I had Dr. Chen for Cal 1, and he was truly excellent. He's a genuinely nice person with a real passion for his work, and he gives tons of extra credit. He gives you every chance to succeed, and if you can't pass Cal 1 with him, you never will.
Chen is fantastic. Tons of extra credit and he's a funny guy during lecture too. If you can take him, you definitely should.
Mengpu is nothing less than my lord and savior of mathemathics. I have taken him for Math125 and Math126 and have earned A's in both. Tests are identical to the study guides, bonus points on homework and tests if you take early, and he has really funny moments in lecture. Take Mengpu.
He's great! The review is just like the test. He also gives extra credit for everything.
Soooooooooo easy, tests are identical to reviews. The class is only graded on homework, which is a free 110, and tests which are absurdly easy. Calc 3 should be a very hard class, but I would be embarrassed if you don't get an A+
He is a good teacher, super smart, but can sometimes be a little hard to understand. After a week you definitely get used to it though. He gives extra credit if you do the homework early. He gives a review that are the same questions as the tests but with different numbers. As long as you show up, take notes and do the HW you will pass.
His lectures are really nice. The tests are exactly like the test review. Solid choice of a math professor. Take Mengpu!
Menpu Chen is a good choice for Cal 2. class is not mandatory and you really don't need to go becausehe posts the notes online. kinda a lot of homework about 2-3 assignments everyweek. content is hard but he makes it easy to do well in the class. idk how much i actually learned but I got an A+ in the class for doing the work.
Easiest math class I have ever taken I stopped going to class after the second test and still managed to get an A+ in this class. If you do the homework and tests early you get an extra 10% and his tests are identical to the reviews. Would be a mistake to not take Chen for 227.
Great prof; wish I would have gone to class more. Wonderful teacher and teaches through examples which helps a lot. 10/10 would recommend.
Easy A, barely have to learn any calculus to do welling the course.
Study the review and this class is an easy A. I stopped going to class after the third test, lots of extra credit.
Nice guy. He gives clear grading criteria on what will be graded and how it will be graded. Lectures are clear and concise. Solid choice of a teacher.
He is a very nice Professor. he gives homework but its super easy and you can get extra credit on it if you turn it in 24 hours before its due. you can also get extra credit on the tests and final. He is really chill and will post everything on blackboard so if you aren't in class then it okay.
Assigns a lot of homework, but also gives extra credit on it, so it's a balancing act. Tests are worth like, 80% of your grade, but he gives an online review that has problems just like the ones you'll see. Easy GPA boost, but also really does not know how to keep people involved in lecture.
He used to give bonus points on tests, but doesn't anymore. The tests are still extremely hard. Don't take this class expecting an easy A.
He's a fine teacher until the tests comes around. He uses questions that we had never seen before made the tests very difficult. There's a good amount of homework with about 2-3 assignments a week.
I took him for honors after seeing high reviews. That was a big mistake. He did not give bonus on homework (a lot of it), and his lectures were dull and not helpful. The first test was not bad but the others were awful. Reviews were nothing like the tests. For our third test he gave us the opportunity for corrections bc our average was so low.
Calc 2 is already a hard subject, but it doesn't help that Chen doesn't seem to understand his own assignments. He teaches a very straightforward lecture and sometimes doesn't allot enough class time for the materials he wants to cover. Reviews were different from the test which is unlike a WebAssign test and he didn't seem to know that or care.
HE IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. The tests are not like the review and you can't understand anything he says because of his accent.
This was a hard class for me and it wasn't made easier by spending 3+ hours on multiple homeworks. Although the homeworks are difficult and help you prepare for the tests it makes it difficult to have time to work on other homeworks for other classes.
He claims his tests will be like the review but they rarely are. Test average on the third test was a D and he wouldn't curve. He doesn't really work problems like the hw in class so I stopped going and learned by Chegg.
Cal 2 is hard in the first place. During the semester it feels like the class is impassable but the grading criteria makes the class very achievable. Pretty good prof that does care about his students.
I really like how Chen taught the class and provided online reviews for each test. The class is based almost solely on the tests/final, with your best test grade replacing your lowest. The final is very rough because it's cumulative and 30% of the class grade, so put a lot of time into studying for it.
He made me feel like an idiot, the one time i went in for extra help he was almost laughing at me about how i didnt understand the material
Cal 2 is hard, but Chen will get you through it. Beware the mtlc, and it should be noted that it is up to the math department, NOT just Chen, to scale sxams. The exams are hard, but based on an optional review he posts. Attendance isnt mandatory but he takes it every so often and it is extra credit on your final average. It's hard work but doable
Wasn't a great lecturer. Just kinda started talking without giving any reference or background knowledge. He's really young and difficult to understand at first. I almost failed the class. I retook the class and made a 100 with a different prof.
Not cut out for teaching. Great mathematician, horrible pedagogy.
Tough to understand, which makes Calc 2 even tougher. Not the worst, but certainly not the best
Mengpu Chen will give you what you need to succeed, nothing more and nothing less. His lectures and notes are very concise. He posts all his notes on Blackboard. If you study using his notes, you will be successful on the exams. The homework is reasonable. He never gave back the MatLab projects.
Dr. Chen is definitely the guy to take for Math 238. His tests are very fair and come directly from the notes. He will tell you problems to study for his tests, so be sure to practice them and you'll do fine. His notes are very thorough and cover the material very well.
His lectures are very good and easy to follow. He explains the concepts very clearly. His tests are pretty hard, but he definitely gives a lot of partial credit. His homework is BRUTAL. Takes forever, and only 3 tries before it gives you a whole other question. Extremely time-consuming. The final was impossible, however we were able to drop it.
He lectures very well and his notes are easy to follow. The class itself is a GPA killer so be prepared, Diff Eq is not fun. Lots of homework but helps prepare well and his test reviews follow in suit of the test.
Chen is very knowledgeable and very thorough-- he has teaching this class down to a science. Show up, take good notes, and work through the homework problems honestly and there is no reason you can't get an A. The MATLAB projects are a bit annoying, but he doesn't grade them too harshly. Great professor for a class that covers a lot of material.
Best math teacher I would say. His tests are fair and are in person. As long as you go to class and dedicate at least an hour of two of studying you will pass easily. There are 3 MATLAB projects which are easy. I have taken him for almost all my math classes so I would highly recommend
I just didn't like the way the lectures went. It was more of a "imma solve this and you watch" then a true step by step procedure
Chen is a very solid professor that will give you the tools necessary to succeed in a very difficult class. His lectures are very helpful and he is clear about grading criteria.
Dr. Chen is organized and very diligent about posting notes after lectures, review problems for tests, etc. He explains material in a clear and helpful manner. Your lowest midterm test is replaced by your highest and the three lowest homework scores are dropped.
He is your classic math teacher. nice and really does enjoy teacher and cracks a joke here and there. If you go to class you will pass and he gives extra credit if you go attendence not manditory. you have lots of online hw. tests are not that bad and they come straight from the online hws most of the time. He is a tough grader tho
Pretty good lectures, especially for such mind-numbing subject matter. Homework takes a long time but is good practice for tests. Partial credit on paper tests helps blunt the grade hit of calculation mistakes and running out of time on every exam. Attendance is extra credit if you don't miss too many classes.
Dr. Chen is the best 238 professor you could hope for. His MATLAB projects were easier than other professors' and his exams were always similar to the practice problems he posted beforehand. If you're struggling, just show up to office hours and he'll help you out.
Only professor who gave out test reviews that are NOTHING like the actual test. Make friends with people in other classes if you take him and you will be fine. Otherwise, you will not be prepared for the tests at all. Also most of the other professors had take home finals. If I could go back and take a different professor I would have made an A.
Although this is not an easy course, Dr. Chen will give you every opportunity to succeed. He is super organized and fantastic at explaining the material. Go to class/review his lecture notes! He thoughtfully selects and reviews examples that will be relevant for homework and exams. You can't go wrong with Dr. Chen!
The class itself isn't hard, but since it is an online class I made sure to ask questions and be attentive. He takes awhile to respond to emails so I usually had to send a follow-up email. Also, I scheduled office hours with him via zoom and I thought it was rude he didn't turn his camera on or properly introduce his self.
Every lecture was something new. Every lecture was represented in some form by a question on the test. Test study guides are very similar to tests. Master those and you should be good to go.
Professor Chen was an amazing math professor, probably the best one I've had at UA even though I've performed better in my other math courses. His study guides are really good, the study guide for the final was fairly similar to the actual final.
Really good teacher who posts very easy to understand notes and is generous with extensions or make-ups for everyone.
Very chill. Never attended lectures and found homeworks and tests about average for the math department here. Seems to care about his students and the class, going as far as to correct his notes post-class if needed. Writes everything on a slideshow which he will upload after class, so all of his notes are available and decently detailed. Mellow.
I liked Dr. Chen. He gives lots of opportunity for extra credit and his grading criteria is very clear. If you complete your assignments (early if possible), you should get a good grade in this class. My only complaint is his lectures are more "I'll solve this and you watch" than actually teaching us the material. Overall, decent professor.
Homework is done on Webassign which is very lenient with extra credit if you do it early. Mengpu will run through a lot of examples and proofs in class, but studying and work outside of class is definitely needed to fully grasp subjects. Calculus is hard so don't expect it to be a walk in the park, but Mengpu gives the resources to help you pass.
Mengpu is a good lecturer and does a good job of answering questions. His MATLAB projects are not graded very tough at all. I averaged a 92 on them and I have no idea how to code. His tests are similar to his old exams but the final was kinda tough.
Mengpu Chen is a good teacher and gives clear guidelines as to how the class will go. I took differential equations with him and it was very hard, but that's just because it's a hard course in general. Be expected to remember lots of complex integration from Calc 2 and you should have no trouble at all. Overall a really good teacher.
Dr. Chen is a very good professor who makes Differential Equations super easy and understandable. Lectures aren't bloated with theories we don't need to know; instead, the majority of class-time was used for examples. He's very clear too about what will/will not be on the exams. Definitely take him if you can
Literally the class is just lecture and tests. There's a quiz every week, but he tells you the topic to review and it's only one or two questions. If you need help, you can go to his office hours and he's super flexible. The class is difficult but if you do the WebAssign homework and reviews it's definitely manageable.
Overall, Chen is an okay professor. There were three projects in this class and he graded them very harshly. He gives a decent amount of partial credit on his tests. I found him to be condescending.
Mengpu's the goat. His quizzes seem much easier compared to the other Calc 3 professors. I didn't learn too well from his lectures so I ended up skipping except for quizzes days after the first unit, and used YouTube lectures to help me learn the materials. The tests also typically use step by step questions for partial credit, which is nice.
Meng Pu is one of the greatest professors I have ever had the pleasure of taking. Satisfaction is guaranteed when you take his class. He did such a good job that my friends and I call him "Meng Pu the G.O.A.T."
Mengpu is absolutely goated. His lectures are great, and this was by far the easiest college level math class I have taken (understood the material very well). Very lecture heavy, but he does a great job explaining everything. There are projects on MATLAB, but they weren't very hard. He gave test reviews that covered everything on the test. 10/10
Mengpu is the goat. He isn't the most energetic professor, but the guy knows the curriculum very well. He does teach by just doing a ton of practice problems, but for Calc 3 I think it's much easier to learn that way. Not an easy class, but Mengpu makes it much better.
He is a good teacher but not the nicest grader. He does not give credit for things other professors do and is just a tougher grader in general. Would ignore emails asking for help and clarification. Very heavy lectures but explains things in an easier way. He can be a little rude when you ask for help or clarification in person as well.
I HATE diff, so glad it's over. The class is such a tedious slog of algebra and pages of math work, but Chen is prolly one of the better profs available. He grades tough but fair, & is very clear about what content will be on the exams, making class very skippable if you prefer to self-study. I think he was a bit better in Calc 3, but still good.
Made Calculus digestible, would recommend to anyone and everyone.
He was fine. Doesn't respond to emails and not particularly "understanding" of outside circumstances. Also boring. But he covers concepts decently and posts PDFs of lecture notes, which include helpful written notes as well. Neither loved nor hated him. Fell asleep in class a couple times.
Not the most engaging or interesting class, typically just lectures with definitions and examples. However, tests were very fair, and Prof. Chen allowed formula sheets for some of them. Allowed us to replace our lowest midterm with our final exam grade (if it was higher). Lots of homework, and some of it was quite lengthy/difficult.
Tests are way too long and hard for the given time to complete them. You have to do everything perfectly to finish on time and and if you miss something in
I really liked the professor for this class. Overall, he had great and thorough notes, and his tests were pretty fair. He was a pretty fair grader as well (partial credit if you got a wrong number but knew how to do the gist of the problem), which I appreciated since math can be difficult. I wish he was teaching Diff Eq 2!
Mengpu Chen is not responsive to students, a bad lecturer, doesn't pace himself and is rude when you do get in contact with him. Would not recommend, don't take him.
he was fine. boring class boring material
I was going to give him a 4, but he rounded my B+ to an A- without me asking. I found him to be a really fair grader, and he's generous with partial credit. The class is pretty boring, and the homework is annoying, but not his fault. He goes extremely fast during lectures, but takes very good notes and posts them on BB. Does not respond to emails.
Best Calc 3 professor, hands down alot of people say he goes through lectures to quickly or is rude but I went to class and he was always nice.
