She gives a lot of mindless assignments and doesn't seem to know much about the subject matter. In most of the lectures she was actually at (TA's taught 1/2 the class b/c she was on maternity leave) she basically read from the textbook. Not a hard class but a significant amount of busy work was assigned.
Mass Comm: A lot of busy work... a lot of really bad jokes. I think her 'knowledge' of media seriously comes from watching TV 24/7. Study guides might as well read "Memorize the book".
She is clueless about the subject matter, and rambles on about nothing for the whole class. The quiz questions are obscure and misleading. I left the class every day feeling dumber than I did when I went in. I have no idea how this woman got a PhD. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
her ta's taught for 1/2 the class and that was the reason I can say that I attended for as long as I did. Once she took back over I only lasted a few weeks. It felt like she was coming up w/ lecture as we sat there. She was boring and and really didn't bring much to the class. I agree wholey w/ the other reviewers. Nice person but crappy teaching
She's nice and funny, but her lectures are disappointing for the most part. Also expect quizzes every week in lecture AND recitation.
Guthrie is a nice gal. There were some annoying quizzes in lecture (so you must attend) but if you've read the text this class is a breeze. One paper that is easy and interesting, and one bibliography (you have to research without writing the paper!). Overall, this class is simple if you read the text, which isn't too bad.
I don't know why there are so many negative comments about this professor. She's one of my favorite at Pitt! If you're whining about your grade, you probably didn't even try. She genuinely wants her students to succeed. She quizzes a lot, but they're very easy if you do the reading and pay attention in class. I got an A and I'm not an A student.
Dr. Guthrie reminds me so much of my sister. She's real, funny, educated, and a little dorky. She makes you work for your grade, but I 100% recommend her if this your field. A lot of the subject matter is really interesting if you're into this kind of thing. I recommend her for Mass Comm Process if you're really passionate about your major.
I can't get enough of Dr. Guthrie. She's such a cute nerd and cares so much about her students and subject. You read some really intersting stuff in Children's Media. She doesn't add many comments when it comes to grading, so make sure you communicate with her about it because she loves to talk to her students. great prof if you're a comm major.
Nice professor & easy A class. A lot of useless busy work. She tells many bad jokes & can be somewhat subjective, but offers help to those who need it. She tends to stray from the subject matter. TAs do the grading & offer more assistance, & TA Beatty was very nice & helpful. No need to attend all lectures, just read the book & go to recitations.
Had her for two classes and advising. She is smart, nice and helpful. You will learn a lot and its hard not to do very well. I highly recommend taking any class with her.
My favorite Pitt prof! She is funny, interesting, and the nicest person in the world. Take her for upper level classes; sometimes in her large classes people get chatty and she is too nice to tell them to shut up which makes it hard to hear what she's saying. Her Media Criticism class is the best! Love her!!
Meredith's lectures are a joke. She is a nice person, but the class is bored and feels awkward the entire time. She rambles like it's her job. I honestly felt dumber leaving every class. Avoid her in any course you can, there are MUCH better Comm professors at Pitt than her. Super un-fair grader.
Read the book, go to class and it's an easy A. If you don't do either of those two things, and you will make things uneccessarily difficult on yourself.
Worst teacher I've had at Pitt. Did nothing to encourage thinking. Readings were hopelessly outdated, class was 'Media & Consumer Culture' but most recent reading was 9 years old. When students tried to refer to the assigned readings in class, she just babbled on about her daughter, her mother or herself--shutting down any "learning".
I have taken many classes with her i like her. great with books-doesn't want u to spend a lot but there is always reading. lectures can be weird at times. the material is interesting. She can tend to grade a bit unfairly w/ group projects. its hard to get an A, you have to attend class and talk
Went to her classes for the first month maybe. Took me about that long to realize that her classes are a joke, didn't seem very organized when it came to her lectures. Tests weren't that hard, as long as you read the book you should be fine. She's weird.
Not the most organized prof! Her lectures are relevant 50% of the time. Most people don't go but I found it necessary because some test questions refer to lecture material (however off-topic it may be). I figured out how to study for the tests by the 2nd exam and that was to study the textbook material myself. Recitation was very minimal work.
Nice professor, passionate about the topic and willing to help anyone if they seek her out. Many don't go to lecture but I always did. Exams normally have some questions about lecture topics that aren't in the book. DEFINITELY read the book. Her lectures can be all over the place and sometimes irrelevant, but if you read the book exams are easy.
Makes you very interested in the media. Gives you all the help and leadway as long as you ask for it. She makes you feel very comfortable with learning the mass communication knowledge and also makes class a fun environment. Lectures can easily be skipped and still grab an A or B. Textbook is your main source.
Funny, smart, easy to get along with, and willing to help all of her students. She grades based on team presentations and topics are flexible. There's no reason not to get an A and the topics are always fascinating.
Dr. Guthrie is awesome! Her class lectures were always interesting and she's just an overall great person. If you want or need to take any Communication class, you should take it with Dr. Guthrie. I only have one warning for those who hate group projects, there are 3 in this class. But, you should still take Dr. Guthrie!
Took her for Mass Comm Process. She's really nice and tries to be funny to keep class interesting. All tests are multiple choice and vague, which I hate. Lectures are essentially the same exact thing as the book, so if you know one of them you're good. The class was disappointing, but she's cool. I'm taking her again next semester.
Guthrie is a really cool professor and is very relatable to students! She is a bit weird and tends to go off topic during lecture. Her exams are vague with LOTS of specific true and false questions so beware. The textbook is really all you need to study, plus a few things from lecture that aren't in the book (but she posts lecture slides online).
She's adorable. Meredith is like that cool/dorky friend you had in highschool. She's a pretty fair grader, though as others have said, she relies on group projects. Breaks down the readings for you. and wears really lovely dresses all the time.
Honestly, I'm not sure why everyone is saying to read the book. Seriously, go to lecture and listen then study her notes that she puts online before the exam and it's an easy A. IMO the book is a waste of money, plus she has a copy on reserve in the library.
Dr. Guthrie is great. She is very enthusiastic and intelligent. Her lectures were really fun and helpful at the same time. She clarified what was in the textbook when needed and gave additional information where she felt the author lacked. The projects we did were very relevant to the class, too. She gives a solid foundation for the future.
Guthrie is passionate about delivering a stimulating, quality undergraduate teaching experience. She gives dynamic lectures and is extremely accessible and helpful to her students. Students leave her class well-equiped to analyze, interpret, and even construct consumer culture.
Pretty easy-A. Exams are easy, but recitation assignments definitely need more effort. Meredith is an awesome professor and adds great insight to the textbook. I'm a STEM major and took this as an elective, and would definitely recommend this course to anyone in a similar situation looking for an easy and interesting humanities elective.
Doctor Guthrie is one of my favorite professors at Pitt. I took her Mass Communication class as a Communication major, and I don't regret it. She is quirky and really passionate about what she teaches. I highly recommend her to anyone from Communication majors to anyone looking to fulfill a gen ed.
I was always afraid to take her upper levels because people said they were hard. Literally the complete opposite. Sure you have to work for your presentations, but if you practice a few times you'll be fine. She made our final optional if you didn't need it, and midterm and final were take home. Definitely recommend!!!!!
Meredith is a great lecturer and her personality and humor shine through. She makes the lectures very interesting. Be prepared to do work in recitation and the textbook notes are long, but the exams are straightforward and easy.
She's a great and interesting lecturer. All her lectures have pop culture references and fun stuff in them, which makes it fun to listen to her. You do have to listen to the lectures if you want a good grade as well as read the book and the notes, but it really isn't that bad. Her tests are incredibly easy if you've studied and she grades nicely.
Dr. Guthrie was by far one of the most interesting professors I have had. Her lectures are great, she is really funny and makes the subject easy to learn about. She also posts all of the lectures online so its not a big deal to miss a class.
She is awesome!!! This course was fun and pretty easy. She provides lots of examples, ready to clarify any point of her lecture. Accessible via twitter 24/7. Gives you extra times during exams. Take her class if you can!
Mass comm process was great. Dr. Gutherie was very informative in lectures and cared about her students. Even invited us over to her place for Thanksgiving if we didn't have anywhere to go. Lots of group projects in recitation, but overall not too bad. Projects were beneficial and I learned from them.
I enjoyed professor Guthrie. Though it was an online class her lectures made me feel like I got to know her a little bit. She was available outside of class. Some of the topics were extremely hard to grasp, but she showed multiple examples and approaches hoping one would resonate. I wish there were more teacher input in the blogs.
She is so funny and genuinely cares about her students. It's an easy A as long as you show up or read, take her for COMM320!!!!
Meredith keeps lectures interesting and fun. She is very knowledgeable on the topics and willing to help. Tests are fair if you go to lecture, read the book and study for them. Would recommend taking her for Mass Comm if you can! It would be hard to do well in the class if you skip lecture.
I had Dr. Guthrie at 10 am and she was always able to wake me up. Very goofy. Pretty relatable. She works hard to make the content to easy understand. If you review the notes you should get a B at the very least. If you need an easy gen ed I'd recommend taking this class.
Professor Guthrie is one of my favorite teachers that I've had at Pitt so far. Her sense of humor is refreshing and makes her lectures enjoyable. The class is pretty basic, as it is an intro class, but she keeps her slides updated to reflect what's going on in popular culture -- expect memes and funny videos. Her grading is straight forward too.
Showed up less than five times during the semester and got an A.. great prof.
Loved her so much after taking Mass Comm Process I took her Special Topic in Mass Comm class on Disney. SOOOOOOO easy and fun. I wrote a paper on Star Wars!
Great class, had a lot of history about media which was really cool to learn about. Dr. Guthrie is also fun to listen to. Recitation was dumb but you have to go for the projects (which were super easy and a big part of your grade).
This class isn't difficult, but if you don't study/read the textbook/attend lectures, you will struggle on the exams. She posts all of her lecture slides online, but you should still attend lectures, as the slides are vague. She also makes sure her exams include specific details from the book AND lecture. Go to class and you'll be fine.
I took it to fulfill the art gen ed. I sometimes skipped lectures from oversleeping, but if you just get detailed notes from a friend you'll be fine. I would recommend attending lectures because she gives a lot of info out during them and stresses points that later show up on exams. Dr. Guthrie is a awesome and really interesting person!!
if you got all A's in high school you will definitely get an A in this class. highly recommend for first semester freshmen who are adjusting. interesting topic and Dr. Guthrie is amazing. of course you'll need to study a little to do well, just pay attention to lecture and don't fall behind on assignments.
Dr Guthrie was an amazing professor! You do not really need to show up often to do well, but it obviously helps you do better. She is so friendly and helpful. I spent hours before our final in office hours reviewing, and almost everything we reviewed was on the final. It is a fun class to take. Def recommend!
Stopped going to lecture after week 3. Read all the definitions in the textbook, go to recitation, and study a couple hours the night before exams and you'll get an A. The hardest part was the annotated bibliography but there are so many points available in the class that you don't need to ace it.
One of my favorite professors! Dr. Guthrie is such a caring woman who also presents information in a very relatable way. She has lots of real life examples that make sure you remember the content, and she truly wants everyone to succeed.
Guthrie is so sweet and funny! It's an easy class even if you don't go to lectures, but I recommend you do. Also I didn't use the textbook at all.
This class was slightly harder than I was expecting it to be for a gen ed, but Dr. Guthrie is really nice and makes lectures interesting! You definitely don't have to go to lectures to do well in the class but I found it helpful to go. The most difficult part of the class for me was the assignments and annotated bibliography during recitation.
Dr. Guthrie is the best professor Ive had at Pitt so far. I wish I could have her for every class in my major. Shes been super great even during the switch to online learning. While attendance isnt taken during lecture, her lectures are really interesting and you learn a lot more about the topics through them. Definitely take her classes.
Dr. Guthrie is a great professor for an intro level class. Her expectations are clear, she is kind and respectful to students, the course covers a variety of content, and there's a lot of variety in the assignments so you're not just graded on one thing. Lectures aren't mandatory, but I enjoyed going. Mass Comm was both worthwhile and an easy A.
Professor Guthrie is my favorite professor I have had at Pitt. The woman is engaging so I actually find myself looking forward to lectures. Exams are comprised of short to mid answer questions in groups with a peer review which makes getting a good score doable. I took this class to fulfill an arts gen ed and found the content very interesting!
Really nice and fun. Very understanding and never feels overbearing. She did not really test us in this class, but our midterm and final were essays. She makes it so you can like learning the material without the pressure of crazy tests.
She is so good at what she does and so nice. The way she teaches makes everything so easy to comprehend and remember later.
Dr. Guthrie is a gem. She's passionate about the material which makes it even more engaging. This semester, because of the virtual session, attendance was not mandatory. She asks you to read the textbook chapter that goes along with lecture each week, and some of that material shows up on tests. This semester the tests were group-based.
Dr. Guthrie is an excellent professor. Not only are her lectures fascinating, but she also ensures the students' understanding through real-world applications. There are lecture notes & quizzes due every week, but they provided a sense of structure & organization for all the information we receive to later use on the take-home group exams.
My experience with Professor Guthrie was great!
She is so nice. Her Disney class is very laid back. One of the most understanding teachers. Writing intensive course is only one research paper and a final essay exam. Very understanding under the pandemic thus far.
I loved having class with Dr. Guthrie! She was extremely knowledgeable and her lectures were interesting. She also showed a lot of videos in class to illustrate points in the lesson, which was nice. I loved having discussions about baseball with her as well. I would definitely take a class with her again.
Had 1122 while remote. Pretty straightforward class, but having even a basic background in Comm/Psy/Soc/Phil is pretty beneficial. She's very nice. Don't push off assignments because when the deadline comes, you'll wish you had more time since they're demanding enough to require that time.
such a kind heart and she really cares about what she teaches! I appreciated how clear and organized she was for class. I really liked the lecture material, and I liked how 'easy' some of the group exams and projects were. The only thing that challenged me was the longer written assignments, but I got so much help and support during it! 10/10
10/10! Took Dr.G for Mass Comm Process and had such a great experience. Lectures had guided notes, exams were all group based and open note, and recitation assignments were not too bad. Even told us that if we were spending Thanksgiving without our families to email her and she'd invite us over! Such a kind and lovely person.
This course was mostly all lecture. Exams were take-home group exams. Showing up to lectures and completing the weekly notes basically guarantees an A.
Went to one lecture and got an A. Definitely read the textbook and look at lecture slides, I think that's all you really need for the exams. Assignments felt like busy work and the recitation was unnecessary, but graded on attendance. Professor tried to keep classes lighthearted, seems nice.
Dr. Guthrie kept everything fairly simple in lecture. There are a few assignments in recitation, but they're mainly group projects that can be done in a day. The recitation assignments help balance out grades between the 2 exams and the final. Pretty easy class for humanities and STEM kids alike.
Very kind and supportive person and professor. Read the book and attend lectures because she based some exam questions from oral explanations in class (not posted on her slides) and textbook definitions/examples.
Class was pretty easy and attendance was not mandatory. The tests and the finals were kind of difficult but literally everything else was so easy and even the recitation leaders were nice and caring.
Great choice for a Gen-ed. 3 Exams all multiple choice/matching/true false. I never read the book and still got an A in the class. Dr. Guthrie is funny, kind, and genuinely cares about her students. Lectures were engaging and interesting.
LOOOOOVVVVEEEEEEE HER
I love her! So sweet and really cares abt her students. Weekly required lecture notes/quizzes (easy), group projects in recitation (easy), 3 exams weren't bad if you study. Lectures differ from textbook so need to look at both.
I had Dr. Guthrie for Digital Professional Comm (a new class in the department). Dr. Guthrie cares about her students and wants them to succeed both in class and in the job world. Assignments and lectures were beneficial in preparing us for our future careers. The class was low stress and I still learned a lot. Definitely take her!
Dr. Guthrie is such a sweetheart. I took this class as a gen ed and went into it not caring about comms in the slightest, but left having genuinely learned things and enjoyed the class. She does unfortunately require the textbook and you really do have to read it, but overall this was such a chill and low stress class. Definitely recommend.
Very easy class to follow. If you attened the lectures, exams are easy too. Recommend 100%.
Very chill professor. Good and easy course to take as an elective. Would recommend going to lectures because she includes specific details she only mentions in class on the exams and besides, the lectures were pretty entertaining! Had to memorize definitions/stats/laws (not too many), but she tells you clearly what you need to know.
Guthrie is an amazing person and you can really tell that she cares about her students. Before Thanksgiving she told the class that if you don't have anywhere to go that you should email her and she will invite you to her house. Guthrie is very funny and although I found some of the lectures boring, she tries to make it interesting. TAKE HER!
I loved Dr. Guthrie! She's so sweet and very passionate about what she teaches. I took this class as a gen ed and I loved it. Her exams are easy as long as you go to lecture and glance at the vocab in the book. There's a lot of recitation assignments which are tedious but super easy to do. Definitely take her if you have the chance!
My second class with Dr. Guthrie and I still love her! Weekly reading worksheets and discussion boards but readings are semi-interesting and discussion boards easy. One final paper. She really wants you to succeed and is really flexible with extensions for work. Makes you put in the work but it's worth it. I would take any class with her!!
Dr. Guthrie really cares about her students and is very accessible outside of class. Assignments are pretty easy and fast, and having multiple assignments can be nice because no single assignment can make or break your grade. I took this class as a gen ed and it was more work than I had anticipated, but Dr. Guthrie is a great professor.
She's a good lecturer. Two 50-question midterms and a 100-question final. You need to memorize upwards of 50+ people and around 200+ random vocab words. The test are just how well you can memorize vocab words, court cases, and people. Group projects suck because comm. majors aren't the sharpest... but easy class overall.
She is an easy grader and her exams are not too hard but this class still requires decent preparation and knowledge of the material to do well. Dr. Guthrie is the perfect teacher for this class and is great.
If you're taking this for a gen ed, I would honestly recommend something else. The material is very easy and mostly common sense, but she makes you memorize a surfeit amount of people and terms for exams. Recitations were required and were extremely boring. Definitely an easy A if you put in adequate work though.
midterms and finals based on rote memorization; WHAT IF PEOPLE ARE BAD CRAMMERS?? as a math major im a purely logical person, i wouldnt even mind writing papers, but cramming for 2 50-question midterms and an 100-question final is insanity. my gpa is being dragged down because of something i cannot control, and it is horrible. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Genuinely interesting (albiet too fast at times) lectures, and someone that is passionate for teaching. Only negative is mandatory in-person exams and a 100-question final exam. Other than that she's a really good professor.
Get ready to pay attention in lecture and then have to memorize like 100 names and definitions. If you study like a day ahead of time, it's not too bad
I took it as a gen ed and it was soooo easy. as long as you semi pay attention in lecture and review vocab from the book you will get a b on your exams. there are also a ton of recitation assignments that will boost your grade. Guthrie is so funny too. would def recommend
She's super nice and her lectures can actually be pretty interesting to listen to. As long as you are able to memorize terms and people her exams will be super easy and you don't really need to read the textbook to do well.
She is very caring and her lectures went fast as they relate to the real world and weren't boring. Be prepared to memorize lots of people and terms, and read/skim the textbook for exams. Her office hours were helpful for reviewing exams. Recitation was usually short with a few (mostly easy) assignments, some done with a partner or group.
Dr. Guthrie cares a lot about her students and is a good lecturer. However, be ready for huge exams that cover almost all of the material. She is a tough grader and expects a lot from her class, but if you attend and pay attention you will do great.
Super sweet professor, very supportive. Not very difficult.
Great professor and would definitely take again. The only thing I would watch out for is that her exams were 50/50 readings and lecture and often times the questions pertaining to the textbook would be incredibly pointless to what we were learning. Makes skimming and studying hard.
Lectures were fun and never boring. Professor Gutherie is a sweet human and really cares about her students and their well-being. She is there for you as both an educator and as a person. Very class was not difficult, the exams were a bit hard, but there are so many small assignments to boost your grade.
Dr. Guthrie was great, and I really enjoyed this class! The lectures were very entertaining and made the content easier to understand. The assignments in recitation and the quizzes help balance out the grade, so tests aren't the only thing that decides your grade. As well, she is very caring and is very willing to help her students out.
Professor Guthrie really cares about what she is teaching. Her lectures were never boring and she speaks her mind, which had me laughing during class. There is a lot of memorization for exams (50/50 from lecture and book). There are many assignments to bring your grade up, like mini quizzes every week (super easy) and recitation assignments.
