A hard course, but rewarding. Excellent teacher. You need superb writing skills to succeed in this course!
she's a great teacher..very partial and won't influence you with her political views! enjoyable class. need to spend time reading the new your times in order to score well in exams...deliver what she wants and you'll get good grades.
Very busy class, lots of reading and posting. Pay special attention to test essays and cover EVERY question she asks! Take lots of notes when reading for the quizzes (online anyway). Sparks a lot of great debate about current events.
Class isn't too hard. The only grades are a short paper (2 page), a long paper (4 page), a midterm (50 M/C, 200 word short answ), a final (two 500 word essays), and 4 required discussion postings (<100 words ea). Keep up on the text/NY times reading t
Excellent teacher. Nuff said, take her!
She does not has a clear instruction. Her class is not too hard, but you need to keep read the current events. However, be careful because her mc in the exam is difficult.
Who ever said her class is hard must be retarded or something...her class was so easy. She is an awesome teacher. Strongly recommended.
Really good teacher. Knows her stuff, keeps the class in line and focused, doesn't waste time. I took the class because it fit my schedule and it filled a requirement, but I really liked it and I learned a lot.
Class was a little easier than I thought, but you still have to try pretty hard. 15 page paper, no tests. You will learn a heck of a lot. She's incredibly nice, if I could take her class again, I would.
This professor is grade vrey unfair. Please dont take this class if you are not American. English is the main problem in this class.
I took her for Poli 1 and it wasn't very hard.I'm not an American either, but her grading of my assignments was pretty fair.I am not too fond of this subject, and had I studied harder, I would've gotten an A. Other than that, this class was quite easy.
Assignments were fairly easy. A couple of papers. FInal was a paper. Only have to participate at least 2 times before the midterm and 2 times after. Very clear on her expectations. Not a hard class, but you must make the effort to get the A.
She's tempermental and unhelpful. I didn't feel comfortable approaching her. Doesn't really read your emails before she replies. Class is not very difficult but tough to get an A. Intl students should avoid at all costs.
VERY EASY CLASS AND EASY TO GET AN A IF YOU DO THE WORK. SHE SAYS TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE NY TIMES SO THAT IT HELPS YOU FOR YOUR FINAL BUT IN THE END I JUST USED OTHER SOURCES AND WASTED MY MONEY ON IT. YOU CAN ALSO FIND THE NY TIMES AT THE FOOTHILL LIBRARY SIGHT AS LONG AS YOU KNOW THE PASSWORD. EASY A
Heiser is awesome. She is so invested in her teaching. I dreaded this class and it ended up being my favorite class as I near the end of my degree. You have to work hard but it's worth it. I highly recommend her.
comapred to Wilcock or the other polisci teacher this class is a piece of cake. 1 project, 1 hwk assignment, 2 participation qs, and 2 essays for final. very clear of wuts expected/grades fair. must put in effort to get grade but not a hard class at all..i took it over the summer which was easier than during the reg school yr..highly reccomended!
She is pretty nice but I dont like her teaching style. The final is a 15 page essay and and while you have to work on that you also have a couple presentations and other stuff to do. This class stresses me out, dont take it if you're not a poli sci major!
Overall, this was a pretty easy course. It consisted of 4 online postings, 1 midterm, 1 internet assignment and a final. I used the NYT online, don't buy the actual newspaper! The online NYT has a nice search features which saves you a lot of time. The final was hard and quite comprehensive.
I liked her class. Not tooo much work, although what is due is larger projects. She tells you from beginning what you need to do, so if you stay ahead of what is due, you will do great. I liked her teaching style - good class, good instructor -
It was challenging but very interesting. She won't let things slide; if something is due it doesn't matter what excuses you have you have to turn it in. However, it doesn't hurt to do a bit more than she asks. She is very knowledgable and helpful if you approach her in the right way. Don't be arrogant!
Great teacher: sweet, open minded and helpful. Although the class is hard, you will learn a lot . Highly recommended for those who are looking for a great teacher
Simply a terrible experience. Not helpful at all, adding to the already franctic summer quarter experience. You get behind, you're a gonner. You may even get dropped for no fault of your own. Horrible.
I have to agree with the person below me. I've passed all my college English classes with A's, and she has a problem with my grammar. Anyway, she expects you to know EVERYTHING within five minutes. You think you could be doing a good job in her class, but you probably aren't in her eyes. Not a great experience.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!
I like Dr Heiser. I think she really treated her students as adults. No exceptions to the rule whatsoever. If you are on task and you put in that much amount of effort, doing well in her class won't be a problem at all. She's fair, she's clear, and she's knowledgeable. She is probably one of the best teachers Foothill has.
Great teacher. Explains everything really well.
I took this course online and logged in the first two days. The class seemed decently easy but it wasn't clearly organized. She dropped me because I didn't take the syllabus quiz (which was worth 3 points) in time. I wasn't even informed I had been dropped. When I asked her about it she kicked me off the site. DO NOT TAKE HER!
One of my favorite Foothill teachers. The subject is vast & you'll learn a lot. Always glued to my chair during the lectures & discussions. Boundaries are clearly defined (attendance, deadlines etc...) but makes a great class of students who are engaged. Very helpful in guiding you with your projects. Must take Heiser if this is your major.
I didn't feel comfortable approaching her. I was getting full credit until term paper, had to drop because issues that came up in my life is "not valid." She was insensitive in her reply to my email. Class is not very difficult but tough to get an A.
this instructor has a very arbitrary grading rubric. expects a lot but doesn't explain a lot. she teaches the class as an "upper division" class. wait..aren't all the classes @ foothill lower division? do yourself a favor and pick an easy topic for your research paper. you won't get credit for picking something with complexity.
Be warned that this professor's attendance & assignment policies are extremely strict! She doesn't accept late work, and if you fail to turn in an assignment, she will drop you. If you miss 2 classes in a row, you are dropped. If you make it to the end, you'll probably get an A or B. On the plus side, there are no exams in this class.
She is big on attendance and absences. I never read the textbook. I just paid attention in class and took notes. Her test are not that bad. A lot of the class is on current events.
do not take her online course,-instructions are vague and tedious -modules(lecture notes) are deleted after a short period even if they are still needed (forced to download them) -very strict on work and extremely unfriendly tone
supposed to be an easy class. likes to come up with assignment details and expectations after the due ate to justify low scores.
I was excited for this course but the professor proved to be very unfriendly, impatient, condescending, and patronizing. She was not helpful or understanding to her students, and I was under the impression that she dislikes many of her students and has no interest in helping them learn. She needs to get off her pedestal, or perhaps quit teaching.
professor wasnt very engaging or friendly. very strict. course was pretty good and the professor tried to be very fair.
She gets you thinking about the issues that our generation is facing. You will come into class not knowing what the president does and end up being on top of political events and world news. She is not really easy, but if you put in the effort it is a great class
Pretty much all the assignments are done by internet reseach. There are a variety of writing assignments but they're not hard as long as you answer the questions. She doesnt expect a top notch paper. Final is an essay which she gives a week for and you turn it in a week before quarter ends. She is impatient though, strict, no notes
Great teacher! Very hard though. Don't take her unless its your major or you love poli-sci. If you are a poli major is a MUST! Super useful class with contingent issues. She is very pragmatic and impartial. Pretty-much Dr. Woolcock's opposite. Write the paper far in advance, revise it a million times & you'll be fine.
She is a nice professor, who helps a lot, i took her honor class and she is very clear in explaining political terms. Discussions are interesting, presentations are great. Like her a lot.
This prof is absolutely unreasonable. She makes her mind up and cannot be swayed by the facts. Plan to write from an extremely liberal slant, whether you're conservative or liberal. The class itself was pretty easy, it was just the professor that made it unbearable.
Poli 1 is great. She is nice. People who graded her down mostly because they are lazy. They don't come to class and hand in their works on time, and expect the teacher to treat them well. She is really an expect and her classes are wonderful. But don't take her for poli 3. She is not familiar with the stuffs and cannot teach much.
How is she still teaching? I dropped her class because after getting in an argument with her (about definitions of all things) I brought in a real source to show her I wasn't making things up. She showed me the wikipedia page. She is incredibly arrogant. Needless to say I dropped the class (the only class I've ever dropped after the first day)
She teaches you political concepts in class and you must learn them and apply them to the papers she assigns. The papers are very short -- 2-4 pages at most. Pay attention and follow directions you will get an A in the class. Summaries, papers, evaluation of websites and papers - EZ!
She doesn't let students walk all over her, which is a good thing for me because it is very hard to take a teacher seriously when I don't respect them. Her class wasn't liberal but rather moderate actually and this is coming from a conservative. This class is not made to fail you but to get the student to learn. I don't care about grades, got a B.
Unlike several professors at Foothill, Dr. Heiser is professional and balanced. Attendance is a must as is promptness. She does not tolerate tardiness and you only get 2 absences for the quarter.
With all her knowledge and experience, it has put her on a high horse in which she needs to come down off of and realize it is about the students taking her course (not herself). Difficult. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Contested a grade given towards me and she lowered it even more. Smart Teacher yet malicious. Very condescendng if you don't agree with her political views. Go with Armitage!!!
Difficult. She is biased and liberal. Contested a grade given and she deducted more points from me (and of course, she found a way to justify it). Go teach at Stanford Professor not at any JCs.
HARD. I'm an A student and I got a C in her class. I agree with the user below. She is biased to the students that favor her Political views.
Sometimes I feel the class is a bit fragmented. Do not screw up THE essay! Really. Keep close contact with her (on the essay) to make sure you are on the right track. Follow her advice particularly if you care about grades. Very honest. Willing to listen to feedbacks. Class is a positive experience.
I have no clue why all the negative comments but she is one of the better online Professors around. If you do everything she asks of you, you WILL get an A - simple as that. She did not agree with my point of view but I still got an A, I learned a whole lot from her and will not hesitate to recommend her as an instructor to family, friends.
The class is really easy as long as you keep up with the NYTimes although the book is rarely used; that said, you could probably get by with just her lectures. With respect to her attitude, I would have to agree in part that she is a bit stiff and at times condescending, yet perhaps that is because she is wearied by the poor quality of students.
BEST Political Science teacher at Foothill, hands down. She lets you believe in your own ideology without forcing hers upon you (Other Poli Sci teachers are not so kind). Very informative lectures-breaks everything down in any easy to understand format. 1 class presentation, not too stressful. Nytimes.com will be your guide through the class.
She is one of the best Foothill professor' i ever met. A month ago I read all reviews and honestly i was scared but after taking a class from her I think I did best choice. She is so helpful and always explains all (even sometimes damn question that students ask) question very briefly. Great teacher!
Dr. Heiser was amazing. I hae never seen an online professor who made more of an effort to connect with her students. She was totally involved the whole time, and I found her interesting and encouraging. I believe she is an exemplary teacher in every way.
Great teacher, class isn't really all that hard, just don't PROCRASTINATE. No exams, just research papers and presentations. She's very helpful. I tried hard in this honors class and got an A. I tried even harder in Woolcock's POLI1 class and got a B, so there you go....
Heiser is very fair in her grading and tries to give Honors students A's. As long as you turn in all the work and put some effort into it, this is not a hard class. The main component is the 15pg. paper which is very doable and Dr. Heiser is very willing to help.
Dr. Heiser taught this class even though she did not have to and did not really want to. She put in her best effort and taught a well rounded class. All we had to do for this seminar was a presentation. As long as you put in effort, this class is an easy A.
She isn't easy. Lots of work which makes for very interesting course of study. However, I was looking for someone who can help provide a objective view for the Rep and Dem side and I didn't get it here. She is very tough and it's easy to get at least a C from her class.
Ridiculously VAGUE when it comes to explaining what she wants, in terms of assignments. If you write too much she takes off points, but then she doesn't even bother specifying just how thorough she wants your analysis to be. Horrible at giving clear and concise directions. Grades unfairly and is condescending.
One of the most easiest Poli Sci professor. Took the online class during the 5-week summer session and wasn't as tough as others have said. Just do the assignments. If she says 2 pages write two pages, do not bother in writing over the specified page limit. Textbook was used up till midterm. After midterm no point in reading. Easy A!
Prof. Heiser is an interesting and helpful professor, but I wouldn't recommend taking the class if you are taking a heavy load and do not have time to commit yourself to the assignments. The focus for the class was a final 15 page paper with some smaller assignments leading up to that.
Don't take her if you are not ready to commit a lot of time. Grading is hard.
Tough grader! Ultra liberal! Do not take if you are republican or cannot mask your conservative views when writing political essays.
I don't understand these all comments about her. Yes, she might be a tough grader or not as friendly but seriously this is College. Do you really expect professors to be your best friends? I thought she was pretty fair even though my writing wasn't that good. I would definitely recommend her.
How can a professor who misses 4 weeks be allowed to even give us a grade? Tenure is a >>>>>.
Took her online class. I liked her. Quick responses to your questions. She is fair and she is tough. If you follow directions, you're good- if you don't- trouble; if she says 300 words it is 300 words don't go under or over. For winter qtr 2011 we had: 1 web essay, mid term, 2 class discussion q's; a newspaper summary; 2 essays for final(tough).
I agree with the last comment; she was tough but fair. As long as you do all she asks you to do, you'll be fine. Took her summer online class, it def. benefited towards my schedule. Read her lectures in the modules, do the assignments correctly and on time, study for one midterm (most from the lectures) and you should Ace the class
The midterm questions were not covered in the book. When a student called her on it, she side stepped the accusation. If an instructor can test you on material that's not covered in the class, that's cheating. Online classes level the playing field. If you're willing to cheat on the midterm and can write good essays, you will do well in the class.
She used a new type of layout for class - We had two tracks and it resulted in a awkward class format. There was no final or midterm, just a Term paper, a debate and some hw assignments. Her grading system is odd, she marks things down on odd things. Her term paper was the same point value as a 2 page report...
Took her online class and found her to be fair and consistent. Answered questions promptly, but her assistant was useless. A lot of people complained, but I never understood that. So long as you follow instructions & do what's asked it's an easy A. I never opened the book - everything is based off of her modules. Not warm & fuzzy, but considerate.
Great class if you need Poli 1 to transfer and have absolutely no interest in Political science. The work load was not overbearing however you will be expected to write and to clearly follow her directions. One multiple choice midterm which I had a hard time with although I did get an A on all written material. I'd choose this class.
Easy online class. Most points are based on writing. Do all discussions quickly and research your topics on the writing. I did not have any interest or previos info on political science and managed to get an A with an average amount of effort. I recommend.
The course content challenges you. If you don't have research experience, This class will teach you critical thinking Dr. Heiser is very clear on her instructions and syllabus, and is truly helpful. She pre warns the students as of what will cause you to be dropped. Even if you are not politics fan. The class is very engaging and interesting.
this professor is clear in her requirements and she's very responsible. the textbook isn't a must in my experience: the midterm T/F is mostly based on currently news you read on the required NYT and the online module. also there are an article summary, two discussion and an internet paper. workload is appropriate. almost half of our class got an A.
I didn't take much from the classes. Is not helpful at all. Clarity for grading and feedback is rather dumbfounded. You can pass, but the class is annoying, in all honesty.
I don't understand all the negative comments about her below. It is almost impossible for you to not get an A in the class if you put your effort. She was one of the most helpful professors I've met. If you are willing to learn in the class and put your effort, you should not have a hard time taking her class.
Great professor. I had no interest & little knowledge in before I started, but the discussion questions got me involved & interested right away. Discussion is set up great. She communicates with students which is refreshing. She's easily accessable too. The tests are hard & set up in a way that makes technical issues likely but she's very patient.
Really strict about attendance policy. Deducts participation points even with a valid excuse for absence and otherwise great attendance and participation throughout the semester.
Took her online for POLI SCI 1, she is not very helpful, when you ask her for help on private message. You need to make sure that you do everything asked of you to receive an A or B in the class. It is a mission possible, but there's a midterm that's kinda tricky to do, cuz it's not based on textbook, but from discussions, modules, and NYT
Took her online Poli Sci 1 course, and the class was an easy A. Do all of your work and you will get an A. Professor Heiser is an easy grader, if you try you will do well. There are only 4 discussion posts total, a midterm true or false test, and a few short papers, very manageable and easy. Take her :)
I took her online class and the class was very doable! you have to participate in 4 out of 8 discussions and there is a true/false midterm an internet paper and 2 short 2 page essays for your final. It is very likely to get an A in the class as long as you do all your work! I got a C on the midterm and got an A in the class very good teacher!
Pick a different instructor! I was very interested in the class prior to taking it and found it to be a waste of time.Instructions are not clear and she is very hard to get a hold of.We had 2 papers and two tests-For the tests NONE of the material came from the textbook but rather questions that had nothing to do with the class.Avoid at all cost!
I think this class is fairly easy as long as you have decent writing skills and follow the directions on the assignments... The true/false midterm was slightly difficult, but I managed to get an A on all the written work.
This class turned out to be a waste of my time. I went into the class as a political science major and left it devastated. The instructor provides very little to no help and textbook is rarely used. Two exams and in-between many assignments which have nothing to do with the class. You pretty much get lost after the second week so beware!
Do not take HER!If you're a political science major I suggest you pick a different instructor. She tries to seem nice and everything but really lectures the same every day and makes class mandatory. At the end of the quarter I did not feel like I learned anything. The whole class revolved around 1 15-page research paper which was hard and confusing.
The entire class basically revolved around writing a research paper. Didn't use the book a single time and she only covered about 3 chapters overall through out the entire quarter. Strict grading and unclear instructions
You are required to come to class yet some people get away with it without a penalty- favorites! The class focuses on 1 research paper the whole quarter and the "quality" of it is measured based on how much you agree with her personal opinion rather than being a comparative paper. Lots of hours of work but no reward! Don't take it with her!
I do not recommend in any way to take Professor Heiser's POLI 1 class. Her class gets very disorganized and maybe easier for those who are good at reading and writing. She is not a very helpful instructor and if you are good at self-teaching yourself political science, you're probably going to pass her class.
Waste of your time if you have Hieser. She is very unclear on assignments, you never use the book and nothing on the test comes from course material. She's very discouraging and I regret taking her class. She has a tenure so she takes advantage of that so DO NOT TAKE HER! If you really want to learn political science you should pick someone else
Class was easy. Did not use textbook at all. Hardly did any work. She only has you do a 4 discussion questions, a couple assignments/essays, and 1 test. Very organized and clear about expectations. Would recommend if you want an easy A, and don't really care about the subject matter.
What a disaster! I had bad professors, but never I had problems with a full-time professor with a PhD with such great bias. I sent my research paper for review and she didn't like it because it wasn't the "format that she expected." If you are a fiscal conservative, DON'T TAKE HER! Or you will fail!
Tough online class but Dr. Heiser teaches it well. Fair amount of textbook reading, discussion questions that prepare you for final essays, a T/F midterm taken right from the text/lectures, and an internet paper. Recommend taking this class with Dr. Heiser.
Excellent teacher and her material was clear and straightforward. Tough grader in essays. Ignore others; she actively solicited opposing views as long as they were thoughtful and considered and was fair. Would recommend.
Assignments have nothing to do with the study of politics-they are just there for her to grade something. She takes forever to respond to questions and when she finally does her response is not helpful
She is a really tough teacher. Loads of outside work, class is barely needed. Makes you write a lot, but spreads it out over time so as long as you are on top of it you will be fine. Make sure to stay on her good side because she has a short fuse.
Awesome professor.
Prof Heiser's class requires a lot of writing. It really helps if one stays on top of all current events. The essay instructions are really thoroughly, follow them and you will be fine. She grades the assignment promptly and updates students on her whereabouts incase anyone needs to reach her.
She is not very clear on her discussion directions, however she is very clear on her assignment instructions so BE VERY CAREFUL to read everything closely in order to do the assignments right.
I took her class online in summer. Her instructions are always packed together into paragraphs so it is hard to read them. She is a fair grader. I found it slightly hard to ask questions(maybe because its online). She makes the final due early so she can grade and answer questions about grades which I like because most teachers dont do that
I took her summer course online. Although I received a decent grade, I considered dropping the class every step of the way. While the material is important to learn, there is strong indication that she may need further teacher's training because the way she teaches lacks clarity and fairness.
This class is challenging not because of the content but because of the way it is taught. Don't take this class if you are looking for a truly introductory class, you'll have to know what you're talking about from the start. Review guides and tests have little in common. Lost interest in the subject because of this class and actually dread it now.
Syllabus is poorly made & everything is just piled up in paragraphs. Instructions are not clear. A lot of reading & research. Not an introductory class. Not sure if my name looked exotic or foreign but she told me to take an ESL or additional english classes bc of my "poor" grammar or maybe I'm just taking it way up there, but I'm offended anyway.
You have to participate in 4 out of 8 discussions. You have 1 midterm and a rough draft and final paper. In order to get an A, you can only miss 40 points total. The midterm is tough compared to the rest of the class, you have to study for it! She expects you to put a lot of effort into your paper which is over 10 pgs long. But, she'll help you.
The first paper is a one page summary of a current events topic. The other two are full length essays. Discussion is very important so make sure to participate. As long as your answer is well crafted and you respond to others, you should get 100%. Midterm was M/C. Final was a 1200 word paper. Her grading is not that too hard. Quite reasonable.
I took her online class which did not consist of a lot of assignments but each assignment involves a lot of work and time. She really expects you to put in all your effort b/c she wants you to learn. She's organized. Quick grader. No quizzes or tests. A lot of writing/researching. Big essay @ the end.
Fair and honest grader. You get what you put in: More effort better grade. Consistent and clear assignments.
This professor's way of teaching was very refreshing. I took this class because I had to just as a general elective. She seems to understand that. You can learn as much as you want to if you happen to be a Poli major. For the rest of us, an A is still attainable. Very easy but learned a lot. Highly recommend.
The way that Professor Heiser decided to teach the material made it very interesting and appropriately engaging for everyone. The discussion questions were always clear-cut, based on recent events in American politics that were relevant to the modules. She also grades leniently, caring more about clear effort and dedication rather than conventions.
Really enjoyed this class. Professor Heiser is a clear and fair grader, and her lectures are concise and down-to-earth. Do every assignment, and read the syllabus.
Do not take her! Sad to say, but she is looking for ANY excuse to fail students. No matter how hard you try, NOTHING is good enough for her. Will not allow you extra credit. I ACCIDENTALLY submitted a paper 1hr late but she is not at all reasonable. She is very COLD!!!
I felt she always looked for something wrong in every assignment you did and all her comments came across as aggressive, "you're wrong" "do more research next time". I literally named something wrong and she took off 2 points on a 10 point assignment. I would try to justify what I did when she took off points and I never got a reply back via email.
This class was challenging because I hate the subject, however, it wasn't too difficult to pass. Do your weekly post EARLY and you must comment on 2 other students' post. Do not procrastinate on your 8 page research paper! Her instructions were sometimes unclear, but she was very responsive. I believe this was her last quarter teaching. Very doable
Her class is fairly easy if you're just a robot doing exactly what she says, and pay attention to the smallest tiniest little details. She takes points off for the smallest little things, and so you have to pay attention to EVERYTHING. She is the most anally retentive person I've ever met, and she took all fun out of this class with her pickiness.
