smartest lady i ever met!!!!
hardest class i ever took!
excellent teacher, worth taking for any class
Bad Prof. Very hard. She requires too much work with the reading she assigns
Absolutely the most intelligent woman I've ever met- I've learned a ton.
Class is very challenging and you become a better student from what she teaches!
Horrible class, totally different from bulletin description
awesome woman! excellent techer!
cool class & prof, learned a lot! she is very smart & helpful, highly recommend!
great class, very interesting. teaches more than just specified topic.
She will make you work hard but she is nice and helpful
Dr. Mowrey is brilliant! This class changed my life and made me a better writer
Anyone who walked in would think it's an ENG class-you learn how to write papers
Very tough, but is absolutely fantastic... changed my college career
Those who said bad things are just lazy. She is GREAT. My favorite.
Talks as if she's on speed, never slows down, A LOT of work, however she is a good teacher if you care about old men's views in books written over 50 years ago
Terrible class, if I wanted English I would have signed up for it instead.
Instead of Women in Religion, it was Feminism In Society. We barely even talk about the subject. This class was very disapointing.
I wanted to learn about death and dying and instead I learned how to read. Thanks for wasting my time, I did that in second grade. The whole class was centered around Freud and here's a clue, no one seriously cares about him or Carl Jung anymore.
Dont take this class with her! Stay away from her she is MEAN...I would like to say something else but I can't.
She maybe smart, but this class sucks!!! a lot of work and she can be just plain out mean, Shes not a good teacher for the average student, avoid class at all costs
This class was difficult, and it made me work very hard to understand it. There are many opportunities for improvement if you do not get it right away. This class was the best I have taken so far at CMU.
I agree, this class is difficult, it is more like an Eng class, but you learn how to be a better student...take this class only if you are willing to work hard and love a challenge! Interesting material, but a lot of writing.
she teaches like an english teacher, not philosophy OR religion - very very hard class. will never use her strategies ever again.
I hate this teacher. If you decide to take this class, make sure you don't schedule any other classes, cuz there is a TON of work
She is the most intelligent person I've ever met. She challenges you but she makes you a better student in the end. All professors should expect that much out of their students. Easy classes should have been done with when we graduated from high school
The only reference to death or dying was the one in my head contemplating suicide. But I did learn how to read!!!
If you ever find yourself trying to remember what it was classes were like in Middle School take her classes. Every day right after we took role she would designate a class "ssh-er" who would make sure that the class stayed quite. Plus I leanred
Professor is very smart, but what she teaches is better suited for a reading class, not one focusing on religion. If you want to discuss the class subject, take it w/another professor.
Very interesting class.
this professor knows what she's talking about. she goes out of her way to help her students to acheive the highest grade they can possibly get. i'm amazed that i finally have a professor that cares about her students!
HW everynight that is due the next class but she does not grade it she only stamps it.You have 2 portifilos due of 25 stamped assignments and she grades 7 out of them.Never more than 2 pages essay ever not too much reading.EZ class if you dont fall behind
If I wanted to take an English class, I would have. You don't get to actually discuss anything - the reading material and her own opinion is law.
it says it's supposed to be a discussion class, but all you do is read books by old white guys and she teaches you to write papers about them.
She should be teaching an english class, she trys to change how you read and everything, she discusses the readings and that's it, nothing else

Very intellectual, however, has a firm opinion on everything and does not acknowledge that there may be more than one answer to a question. Learned a lot but wish that the atmosphere was more open to discuss your OWN opinion not just hers.
Very intellectual women. However, her class SUCKS!! If you feel like spending two hours every night with homework then this is the class for you! I learned alot but the work was ridiculous. Two page essays and reading were assigned three days a week.
Can I never rid myself of this woman! You learn A TON in this class, but it doesn't apply to life. She is constantly giving HW. Even when the semester is over I got an Incomplete as a grade b/c my portfolio wasn't good enough, so now I have to fix it.
There is a ridiculous amount of work for a class I thought would be relaxed and easy. If you are really religous do not take it, she argued with people who added to the discussions on faith positions instead of using science and logic, very frustrating
Boo...I couldn't stand this class. Well, not so much the class, as the PROF.! Ok, if I wanted to take an Eng. class, I would have. Never try to reason with this lady, she lives in her own little bubble and refuses to come out.
Very intense and interesting lady; would be great to know outside of class. But, her class is difficult to keep up with. Lots, and lots of homework. However, she will bend over backwards for you if you need anything. I would take her again, but CR/NC.
She's very smart, but what the heck! You ask her a question and it sounds like she's repeating what the ditionary said. You ask her to speak in laymans terms, and she looks at you like you're stupid. Such a hard class...good luck!
She is one of the most brilliant professors I have ever had.She is well versed in all subjects, which allows her to bring dimension to any topic she lectures on. Anyone who takes a class with her will leave as a better and more prepared student.
She teaches very well and she covers every base that you need. Her methods are unorthidox but her results speak for themselves. She's outstanding.
Worst prof. I have ever had in four years at central. Overbearing and egotistical is an understatement. DO NOT take a class with her if you value your GPA or your sanity. Highly critical of student work, and worst method ever with homework.
This portfolio method is tough. It's hard to keep up quality work; there are so many assignments. It has confused a lot of students, whose grades will suffer. For my part I'm doing OK, but don't kid yourself, this class is going to be hard.
Ok, first off, this is a RELIGION class, so if you are religious, be prepared that some of your beliefs will be challenged, which is the case in most religion classes. This class is a TON of work, but very rewarding in the end. Do the hw and you're fine.
Do not argue with Mowery, you will automatically be given a bad grade. Lots and lots of homework, it never ends!! Very regretful that I signed up for this class.
okay, if you're sick and even have a Dr's note, she won't take your homework because she wants you to mail it in when you're gone. But in my case, I was too sick to even do my homework and mail it in to her. She shows no understanding or compassion.
Missed the first day of class(Tuesday)because my advisor gave me the wrong class to take so I had to switch and take her class at the last minute.Came to class on Thursday, assignment due on Thurs., told her will be done Tues., was told no, you get a zero
If I wanted to take an English course I would have signed up for one!!! I'm positive about two things, we never discussed religion once in this class and I will never take another class by Merlyn Mowrey.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER
Not a fan of this professors teachings.
Not a class for people who can't handle being challenged. There is a lot of work but it pays off, if u do it. She's very helpful and smart. She is one of my favorite profs on campus! I learned a lot in this class and LOVED it!(im the type who hates hw 2!)
Not a class for people who like to challange the professor and truly enjoy debating issues brought up in class. She disagrees with any free thought unless it fits into her belief system. I feel sorry for all who attempt to take this class.
I can't disagree with what is said here. This class is hard. Dr. Mowery is very demanding. However, if you leave this class and have not learned a massive amount of info, it is your fault not hers. This class separates the 'men from the boys' as they say.
Why anyone would take a class with this professor is beyond me. The class would be fine with a different person teaching it.
This class is the definition of stress!!! It was the most difficult and time consuming class I've ever taken! Potentially meaningful and interesting if you have an ENDLESS amount of time to spend on it!
The work load is unconscionable along with Merlyn. No one in their right mind has enough time to spend on this class.
There is a lot of work, but it is designed to teach you to write and to work better. She is amazing at clarifying stuff, and she has you reading things that are for scholars. The work load is defintely for people that are trying to better themselves
I found after a few bad grades that most of the people who were doing well in the class freed themselves from thought and basically copied what we were reading, almost straight from the book.
The workload never ends, but you can actually get something out of that. The Professor though is impossible, got nothing from her.
If you participate a little in class and maybe go into her office a few times, you're golden. also i would recommend taking her classes as a freshman because she will teach you valuable skills and the course load is intense.
This woman is still a professor at CMU? Dear God!!! I took a course with her three years ago and have never met a professor I disliked more.
The semester is over!!!! I never have to walk into another class where a crazy person is teaching.
Never again will I be taking a class with this teacher.
Hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray my time in hell has finally been completed. The heat was unbearable, but I somehow made it through to live another day.
No one wants to learn anymore. If you possess an IQ over 4, go to class and put in a "little" effort you'll do just fine. But if you prefer to spend your time waxing your carrot then avoid this proff.
You really can learn alot from this class and I did, but this professor is just plain nuts. Take the class and you will learn, but beware of the professor, she is one I am glad to never have to deal with again.
She is unequivocally the worst prof to deal with, listen to, talk to, and see on a daily basis. Do not take any class with her, but if you do for some reason get stuck with her, avoid disagreement with her at all costs and basically kiss butt.
Not a fan of this professor, the class is fine and you read some very interesting things, but the professor just is not worth the daily headache.
These bad ratings are not a surprise, considering the non-existent work ethic of today's students. You come to college for an education, and heaven forbide that Dr. Mowrey give you one. If people have to read, the class is too hard. Learn to study.
I actually picked up an A- in this class and wish I had never taken it. Not because of the class, the heavy reading, the heavy writing, but because I could not stand this professor.
The few good ratings are not a suprise, our class consisted of 22-25 kids, personally I don't think 5 people walked out of the class upset about what they had learned or the work, no they were more upset with the fact that they had to deal with Mowrey.
I see alot of people on here attacking the professor not the class, that is exactly how my time played out in this class. Any other professor would be a better choice.
I'm more concerned that more people do not speak out against this professor.

The ratings speak for themselves.
WARNING: She already hates your writing style... must learn to write in "mowrey" terms ~ good class, bad prof... dont take it with her... many countless nights not sleeping becuase she diddnt like my writing style.
This woman lives in her own little world and it's not a sane one. She truly could not relate with anyone in my class and most of the time upset people because of it. Worst experience I have had in College.
Suppose to be a religion course, instead we talked more about Politics and did more writing than you would do in an English course. She also talked only of conservative viewpoints, which are fine yet shouldn't a different viewpoint also be discussed?
No matter how hard you work in this class, she will hate the way you write. Do not take any class where she is the primary professor, which means do not take any class with her.
she so hated my writing also, i ended up just copying almost verbatim from the book and started to get solid grades from her.
These ratings are superficial. Dr. Mowrey would give you the shirt off her back to help educated you, and what thanks does she get... If you don't want an education stay home. The state of students is sad when they can't see that she is one of a kind.
If you give her a chance, she'll give you a chance...my favorite professor! Her class is hard but she warns you in the beginning so quit nagging on her. She is very smart and if you go to her for help, she'll do her best to make sure you do well in class.
Took her class two years ago, still question why this woman was so horrible of a professor. To put it plainly, she is impossible in every aspect. She was proven wrong on several occasions and still would not bend, why is she still teaching?
You people are crazy. This woman was an excellent teacher. She was very hard, but if you ask for help, she is also very helpful. Only take her if you're up for the challenge, and if you do, you'll learn a lot.
Took this class to fill a UP a year ago! Biggest mistake of my life. This woman was the worst teacher ever encountered. She teaches opinion not interpretation! She is a disgrace to teaching and her classes should not be taken by good students.
She would be a great teacher... if she were teaching an english class. WAY too much emphasis on reading and not enough on say, religion. Should re-name the class ENG 334 instead.
Her and I could not agree on anything, she came me an Incomplete...
I took this course for UP credit. She's an amazing teacher. She will help you in whatever way she can and she's excited about what she is teaching. This is NOT an easy A, but you will learn.
Way too much emphasis on English rather than religion. It's a portfolio class so stay clear if you can! All we ever do is write papers & there's no class time for peer review. Doesn't explain assignments clear enough. Stamps everything on its due date...if it's wrong or late you're screwed.
The work load is crazy and she without question has a tough time of relating what she wants on every assignment. To be honest, I'm not really sure she knows.
She is not easy and if you expect a class with NO TESTS to be easy WAKE UP!!! We aren't in high school any more. I Went into college ready to give 50% and see how far it got me, her class taught me how to study, how to scan reading, and how to improve writing. Also, Reading is required in college
It is not about the work load or only giving 50% its about this woman and how nuts she truly is. Students dislike her because she is like a tryrant who tries to teach principles, but truly does not abide or actually know her own. She waffels, she gives the teaching profession a very bad name.
This woman is a piece of work. I put everything I had into that class and she told me I should be doing better work. She thinks it's a English class. She is very self-righteous. The woman obviously needs to take some lessons in dealing with people without insulting them. Take the class with tests.
Had to take this class to fill in a UP and turned out to be one of the worst experiences I have had here at CMU. Really did not like the professor, very scary lady. JJ knows.
This class was extremely aggravating. Merlyn is very nice and so willing to help, but it's hard to get by in the class if you disagree with her reading and writing techniques.
She was terrible. I hated this class.
Make sure not to type assignments with more than one compuer, or print assignments out using more than one printer. You will be accused of academic dishonesty. Took class to satisify a UP requirment. Turned out to be the worst decision I have EVER made while attending CMU.
If you have a problem with too much self-esteem or a big ego take this class because she will make you feel completely worthless. She has her own messed-up way of reading and writing and if you don't learn it and practice it, you will undoubtedly fail...like I did.
I took Professor Mowry's class before transfering and was so relieved to have a professor who wasn't a total idiot. She makes you work and has high standards but if you pay attention you get a lot out of the class. She was among the very best professors I had at CMU.
You will spend a lot of time and effort on her assignments, then to find out that you have done them completely wrong because she can't explain anything clearly. I recommend finding someone else to take it with.
She is a terrible teacher! You have no clue how she grades assignments because she collects them all at once. She makes assumptions of religions and has challenged people on if they are a true Christian because they believe in the Devil. I feel like I have gained nothing from this class!
Dr. Mowrey is an amazing prof with high standards for students. If you are looking for a blowoff class, this is not it - this was the only class where I earned my A! Obviously other students are at CMU for something other than academics...Dr. Mowrey is a challenge, but you end up a better student!
The only person on here actually giving Dr. Mowrey good marks is Dr. Mowrey herself. Just face the fact, 9of10 kids who take your class did not like the class, nor you. You need to do alot of changing and this website should be helpful, yet you ignore reason again. CMU needs to make a change.
She was an odd woman. Hard class, lots of papers, but I honestly did learn a lot in that class and I enjoyed the books she recommended. If you're looking to make your writing better, her class is the one to take, even though its not an English class. But if you're looking for a blow off class, this isn't it.
It was the worst class I have EVER taken in my career as a student. That's saying something with my undergrad and graduate work done. It was awful. When we had to write a paper about how Whoopie Goldberg had betrayed her race, I knew a was done. Luckily, I took it pass/fail. It was the only class I failed! My mid-term paper said, C+ Good JOB!!!
The worst class/teacher I have ever had. Think HITLER! She is a socialist, femminist nazi and if you don't do things HER way you are screwed. Avoid mowrey like the plague
She's very hard and very judgmental. Pretty much, it's her way or no way at all. However, she does offer help when students are struggling. If you're not into writing, do not take this class. Seriously...
There is alot of paperwork involved in her classes, but its not difficult. It does require atleast 1 hour of reading every day, but the class is well worth it. She is more than willing to meet with her students and does a great job explaining and helping o
You have to buy into Merlyn's method of studying, but once I did, my grades in every class began to rise. It's not easy; you have to really work to get good grades in her class. But as long as you put forth effort, she will reward you. I reached out to her, she believed in me, and she helped me in all of my classes. As long as you're willing to try hard, you will learn a ton from her.
Excellent professor, difficult class, but well worth it. She taught me a great deal about proper paper writing and how to present at conferences. I would not take back my experience with her for anything. She has helped me even into my Masters. Thanks.
Terrible professor. I'm not sure too many kids in our class walked away from this class having learned anything, mostly, we collectively disliked this professor. Take this one with someone else.
Dr. Mowrey was a wonderful teacher - very clear, helpful, and kind. Writing is important, and she helped us to learn that and I will always appreciate it. Thanks!
Avoid this professor at all costs as you will, as many before have, live to regret having to deal with her and your attempts to get anything from her class will make your head spin, not because she is difficult, but because she is a poor teacher.
Dr. M is a fantastic lady and most likely one of the best teachers on CMU'S campus. I just like to say that I took the class as a freshman and now I am take ENG 201 an pulling an easy A because of her class. I learned a lot for this women and she needs more respect as a person and teacher.
This is the worst prof that I have ever had!!! You never know what she is asking you to do, and the course load is unreal!! She is very confusing, and very unwilling to help, she really isn't that nice outside of class either. YOU WILL REGRET TAKING HER CLASS!!!
Anyone who says Dr. Mowrey doesn't know her stuff is probably someone who skipped class on a regular basis, doesn't like to do work, or simply doesn't pay attention. She knows her info. inside and out and teaches it well. This class was hard, yes, it required work..but in the end it is very rewarding if you like to learn!
By far the worst teacher at Central, she deserves straight zero's not one's. The rhetoric she spews in class is the same she spits out outside of class, all handed down with cryptic messages so she can flip flop in the end. It boggles the mind how she has lasted so long.
She taught me how to read properly but that is it. The course really didn't have much to do with the subject matter. She is looking for the points in everything u read. Keep up with the readings, you have to to get a "stamp". Felt like I was back in high school sometimes.
BEST teacher I have ever had, period! She teaches you reading skills that will help you in any/all of your classes. She genuinely cares about her students, and will offer you help even if you aren't in her class anymore. I had her two semesters ago, and she still knows my name. The subject matter is amazing too! It changed my outlook on death.
I really only have two stories about this class and the craziness that went on in it. However, one of my roomates has quite a few more stories about her and in both of our minds and most who had to go through a semster with her would tell you to stay away from any class she teaches. I swear she's the only one on here giving herself positive words.
It's fitting that she teaches death and dying because I litreally wanted to shoot myself in the head every time she opened her stupid mouth. Avoid at all costs, treats you like you're in kindergarten.
The first thing out of her mouth on the very first day is, "college students in American do not know how to read." This was odd to me because I was taking a religion class. I think you should not be able to get into college if you don't know how to read. She turned the whole class into an english course. BORING!!! Terrible teacher avoid.
She's got good discussion but I'll have to agree with the last comment that it comes close to an english class. She says she wants to help but sometimes I feel like she is going to tear me down during getting help. Also quite unclear of assignments. It's a portfolio class and you have no exams if you like that. better off takin another professor.
horrible horrible horrible. i did ok in the class but it was a ridiculous amount of work for a class that attempts to draw real-life conclusions for crap theories that anyone can make up. and mowrey buys right into it. take another class with another prof., not this one.
Tiss a scary site to see when this prof takes the head of the class and begins her reign of stupidity. How few have survived and those who had, wish today they would have taken the class with someone else.
She is most likely the best teacher on the campus. She truly cares about each student that she has her in class. Yes it is true that she thinks that college students need to learn to read better, but I thank her for it thats for sure. After taking this class all my classes that involve writing I Ace due to her. You will learn a ton in this class.
It's not an easy class, but you will definately take something away from it. Out of all my classes this is one of the few that I've actually learned in. If you don't have the time, or aren't really into becoming a better student, don't take it. She is willing to work with you if you have the time and will.
Not a good class, avoid her for any class, not really sure why anyone writes anything positive about her on here?
The best teacher on campus by far. It's hard work and a lot of writing, but you'll learn a lot. She cares a great deal about her students, and shows it. She'll know you on a first name basis by the first week or two. She even offered to teach my younger sister the material on her office hours since she's currently on sabbatical. That's dedication!
One of the best, most admirable profs I've had. She's enthusiastic, intelligent, cares about her students and you will learn so much in her class. Lots of work, lots of writing, but I became a better reader, writer and student because of her, and the material is interesting. Class is fun b/c it's set up as a discussion rather than lecture.
This class is tough! She makes good writers want to cry. But she is extremely helpful on critiquing essays and teaches you how to become a better reader. Don't take her if you don't like to work for your grade!!
Some tough stuff here. I've never worked so hard in a class for a C+, which I thought should have been an A-. If you want a semester of frustration and a strong liberal bias, by all means indulge yourself.
Honestly, I have recieved my money's worth in knowledge. She knows her stuff, and can teach it fairly well too.Unfortunately she thinks its an english class.Be prepared to be slaves to the printer due to her giving an essay every class period.By the way , if you miss any essays, your cooked.
Challenged students mentally each and everyday. Wonderful discussion. The woman is a genius. Essays due most days. She is very clear in what she expects from her students. Take this class, expect to actually work for your grade and walk away with more insight and knowledge on the subject than ever before.
PLEASE CONSIDER WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY, although this professor is a smart woman and has a lot to offer an english course, if you are interested in the subject of death and dying, please take this course with someone else. I was very dissapointed, what should've been a very interesting topic was lost due to her focus on "critical reading"
I was truly hoping that this class would live up to it's hype and it did not. First off, REL stands for religion, not theology. Secondly, we discuss the same topic for about 6 days and never learn anything new about it. How is this possible??? Nothing is clearly explained and her grading scale is objective. The professor is horrible.
You should go to class everyday and expect to have an essay due everyday as well. On the flip side, no tests, no quiz's, and no papers, essays are usually 500 words or less. Participate, she loves it and it will help your grade. She knows a lot and you can take a lot out of this course if you put something into it. Learned TONS and LOVED thisclass
never ever ever ever take a class with her. i signed on to take women in religion, and what i got was feminist philosophy also, she makes you write something like 65 essays and only grades seven to ten of them, and doesn't even give you feedback on them, thats ridiculous.
Worst class I have taken at Central. Hated every moment of it. AVOID THIS CLASS, I wish I would have.
This professor is literally the best prof I've ever had. She is frustrated with the state of students today - and helps you become a better one! Negative reviews are left by students who would rather remain mediocre. If you are willing to work hard and learn a lot, take this course! REL and PHL are the same dept..expect both in class!
We spent the first 5+ weeks on reading strategies-and not really learning anything in the process. She does know her stuff though. There is an essay due just about every class period, plus additional assignments due the same time. Make sure you don't miss class unless you have to, and complete all of the assignments. The plus side? No exams.
Firm but fair. Don't let the no exam policy fool you -this is a DIFFICULT class! You MUST read the books carefully. DON'T write the essays the night before -they're not as easy as you might think, and it's not "just homework." All that being said, she's a genius and she's ALWAYS willing to help. You'll never have another prof like Merlyn -take her!
This class requires a lot of reading and writing - I worked more than all the rest of my classes combined. But very provocative class. I would recomend it to anyone.
The amount of work, though large, wasn't a big deal to me. Mostly I was disappointed at how the class didn't mirror the discription in the course packet. Smart lady, no doubt, but she made it an English class with "reading strategies" for 5+ weeks and made me feel like if I went for help, she was going to ream me for it. Take it with somone else.
I had Merlyn for a couple of classes. Would HIGHLY recommend her b/c the subjects are interesting and you will learn a lot from her. Although the critical thinking skills portion may seem pointless at the time - pay attention and use it - I use those skills all the time in grad school.
Merlyn is such a wonderful instructor. She is willing to help students anytime. Her class for me was very difficult with the critical thinking skills, and you must do all the readings very carefully. If you have a packed course load I do not recommend taking her classes. Her classes are very stimulating for your brain If you like that then take her.
IM TELLING YOU DO NOT TAKE HER!! I took this class to fulfill 300 level or higher and spent more time on this class doing "English" type work than learning Religion. Way to much work for the importance of the class. You will hate taking her. Trust me. Didnt learn one thing from "her" she just regergitated others writings. Class is a waste of time!!
Terrible class! Those who like to be told how to read books and comprehend them would like this class. This class was way too much work for the typical college student. She checks attendance everyday and stamps ALL homework! Those who gave her a good rating are wrong, trust me! All 60 students in my class disliked her. Absolutly rediculous class!!
I seriously can't believe some people actually left good comments about her. I took AP english in high school, am typically an A or B student and got a C- on the first portfolio and C on critical reading. This class is impossible, way too much work and if you go to her for help she makes you feel like an idiot who doesn't know how to write.
very difficult class. You have at least one essay due after each class and about 50 pages of reading or more. If you take this class, you won't have any time for your other classes. If you go and talk to her about your grade, she won't change it or take what you say into consideration. I worked very hard and am an A student but didn't do well.
Horrible class, all we did was read the books and have an essay due every class period, the worst part is our class wrote about 13 essays per portfolio and she only graded like 3 of them, so it was some of the worst busy work for no reason, didn't really learn too much either, just basically got graded on our english skills, not even worth taking!
You'll write around 30 papers and only 6 are graded, not of your choice. Class is very fast paced. Class participation is necessary for your grade, which sucks if you don't understand the topics until the next day after getting caught up from the lecture. I hated this class with a passion nd would cry if I had to re-take it. Don't take her.
A very hard class, but I squeezed through with a B. She's a very intelligent woman, and knows what she's talking about. Back when I was in the class (roughly 1997 or so), I was one of the few guys in there. Very attractive lady!!
Although tough, this professor is incredibly fair. Her high standards pay off and the skills she taught me helped prepare me for graduate school. Thanks!
Extremely tough class and attendance is mandatory. If you are a person who shows up every once and a while you won't pass. Very intelligent lady and extremely fair but very tough. must prepare for class everyday... definitely not a slack off class.
The reason why Merlyn's profile here has a green frowny face is because she is being rated by idiots who are too lazy to do college-level work and too stupid to hold the big ideas we talk about in class in their tiny pea-sized brains. To those who care about their education, Merlyn is an awesome professor. Challenging, but definitely worthwhile.
GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!I signed up for what i thought was women in relgion thinking we would be reading the torah, genesis, the quaran, etc but what i got was feminism 101 and a bunch of feminist propaganda. she only reads about a quarter of the essays you write, she's a nice lady but if you wanna learn about women in religion don't pick her.
She's tough, but fair. Make SURE you do the homework and don't hesitate to ask questions, she wants to give 110% help to her students. You HAVE to read when she tells you, and you have to come to class prepared or you will fail. She teaches the class more like an English/Composition class but all in all, you still learn a lot.
Dr Mowrey teaches at a university level. If you are looking for a class to just coast through, none of the classes she teaches will work. If you are looking for a class that will challenge you and help you grow mentally, I highly recommend signing up for one of her classes. Just be prepared to read and write quite a bit.
This was hands down the hardest class I've taken so far at CMU, however she is an amazing prof. Always willing to help but it takes hours and hours of dedication to get an A. Not a cupcake class so be prepared to work. Class contains a ton of reading which you must do to get an A. Go to office hours bc she is very helpful.
I thought she was a wonderful teacher that really knew her stuff and was extremely respectful of her students.
My only comment is an effective leader stands with the crowd NOT above the crowd. Very pretentious acting and not at all down to earth. Frankly she is scary and likes to instill to much fear. I just don't agree with this method of teaching.
A university level class, and a 300-level class at that, demands critical thinking engagement, which is stressed from day one. Although the reading load may be too intensive for someone carrying more than 12 or so credits, the reading is thought-provoking and can have immediate real-world connections.
I was so excited to learn about women in religion in this class. Instead, it's like an english class and the only topic we're allowed to write about is feminism. The class isn't even difficult. She is so redundant and quite honestly, i'm bored out of my mind.

Dr. Mowrey is a good teacher but firm on showing up to class and doing the work. Her classes are not for those who are afraid to do work. I owe me working on my masters in Religious studies to her and she gave me the tools to be able to work at a masters level.
Dr. Mowrey is extremely intelligent and she really listens to what you're saying. The way she teaches is very clear and the homework can be time consuming but it honestly pays off in the end. I learned a lot. She goes out of her way to provide group meetings to help further understand the material if you need it. I'm very appreciative.
I am so grateful for taking this class. Everything I have learned in her class has helped me improve my other classes. She teaches you how to learn and since I love to learn, I really appreciate her. She spent 2 hours in her office with me when I needed help. Her class is tough, I would recommend a smaller course load if you take her class.
She's a classy and intelligent lady who wants to help you. Beyond this, I can't stand her class. She expects way too much for 500 words or less and never clearly explains what she wants until it's too late. You will fail if you don't participate, which I'm fine with as you SHOULD participate. But don't take REL 334. It's a frustrating waste of time
She is a very intelligent and respectable woman and she is also a great teacher. The only problem with this class is that it is so hard to pass. You will never know what is expected in your essays until they are already due and the workload is overwhelming. Her materials are very interesting but she expects way more than sometimes is possible
This class is absolutely awful. Given the chance I would never take this class again! She is terrible and I dread going to her class everyday. The workload is enormous and you never know what is required/expected. When she talks, she talks for hours. She will keep you late every day!!!! This has been the worst part about my college experience!
DO NOT take this class. I did learn alot and she presents good material but there is an unbearable amount of homework. She never posted the assignments on blackboard until the night before they were due. She seemed nice but I found her extremely intimidating to approach.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! Is she intelligent? Sure. However a lot of the "brain research" she talks about is contradicting to actual findings. Her work load is ridiculous and you don't know what she fully expects from you. Her portfolio method is not efficient and you waste a lot of time when her grading is only on 5/30 essays written.
Dr. Mowrey taught me how to read and understand scholarly writing. I am a better student from having her as a professor. I am now a graduate and I will use what she taught me for the rest of my life. Do not miss the opportunity to have her as a professor. This course was difficult but she was accessible. If you do not do well it is your own fault.
Dr. Mowrey is a very intelligant woman. She is very helpful and is willing to do just about anything to get you to pass. With this being said: she is hard. This is the hardest class I have ever taken It requires a ton of homework and is difficult to understand. Be prepared to spend many hours on homework.
I just don't quite understand who she thinks she is. The class is random theodicies that don't reflect her original ideas just regurgitation of others work. She focused on reading more than death & dying. if that's what you're looking for in a class, don't take this. By far my worst college experience.
For the love of god, don't take her. She uses her classes to shove her "learning strategies" down your throat, and you won't even TOUCH the subject matter. Literally, we haven't even discussed death and dying, just 20 class periods of learning to be "better readers". Save yourself the agony, trust me.
If you are looking to learn about death and dying in this course then you will be disappointed. All you learn about is "reading like a detective". I wish I had never taken this course. She is nice and she means well but its simply not what I expected at all and I am struggling to get by. She gives so much work that is unrelated to death.
Don't waste your time taking this course. The workload is absolutely ridiculous. I understand it's a college course, but it's like she doesn't realize we have jobs and other classes outside of this one. We've never talked about the actual subject of death and dying, only how to "read like a detective." The way she teaches makes me feel like a child
She is a brilliant woman. She's always willing to give extra help to students. If you want an easy A, this is NOT the class for you. She will make you a better student, thinker, reader and writer if you put the effort in. The material you cover is very interesting. You learn a lot about the subject of death and dying.
Dr. Mowrey seems to be much more concerned with showing you how smart she is than with efficiently teaching a class. Her supposed caring attempts at keeping her students from becoming "academically adrift" are ironically alienating. I love reading and I love writing, but her "Detective" strategies are repetitive, time consuming, and mind-numbing.
Absolutely terrible. She uses the coursework to teach reading skills rather than the actual subject, and the amount of assignments is ludicrous. I'm a decent writer, but this was supposed to be a course on death and dying. Save yourself the trouble and take the class with ANYONE else. She's the worst prof I've ever had throughout my years at CMU.
I took Mowrey years ago; I want to post and let you know that the skills she taught, the ones that everyone thought were "pointless" and "time wasters," have changed how I learn and read...I'm a better student, and have been in grad school and a professional postgrad program. Don't disregard Mowrey's teaching methods; she is definitely helping!!
Toughest class I've ever taken but I gained the most from taking it. I do not recommend this class if you're looking for something easy or a blow-off class to fill a U.P.
Had to withdraw from the course because by the last week that it was possible to withdraw I still didn't have a grade in the class since she gave my portfolio back ungraded. A shame, 'cause the information was actually interesting. Too bad she's the only one that offers it.
Anyone that has given her a good score is barking mad. I accidentally signed up (2003) as a first semester freshman, something that wasn't allowed, from what I understood. Irony of Death and Dying, I had a family member die and the woman lied to me and said I'd get a "W". NOPE, she failed me. Merlyn ruined my whole perspective on college.
She doesn't read you're writing all the way through. You will have a ton of homework and assignments but not a lot of grades. It's not listed as writing intensive, but it is. She grades more off of how you write, instead of you're knowledge of your course.
She is not clear with anything that she wants handed in, she doesn't use letter grades, only the check, plus, minus system like we used when we were 7. She is rude during students presentations.
This professor is what you have nightmares about when dreaming about college. She grades tough, gives way too many busy work assignments, and doesn't clarify anything relevant to religion. I hope you like learning about reading and writing skills because that's the majority of the class. If you can avoid taking this professor, do it. R.I.P my GPA
This class is definitely not a blow off. The material is difficult and she assigns a lot of writing, but, she is willing to do just about anything to help her students get good grades. Go to office hours and ask questions in class and you won't have a problem.
She doesn't touch the course material until halfway through the semester. Her grading is very tough because she's unclear when explaining what she wants. She forces her "detective" and "learning strategies" on you claiming they are the best thing ever. If your opinion in your essays are not hers or someone she references, expect a bad grade. Avoid.
She's more concerned with writing and reading skills than anything else. She makes you "read like a detective" and wants you to take various notes. Book and material reading is MANDATORY! Coming to class is mandatory because she stamps your work and that matters in your portfolio at the end of the semester. I worked hard for the grade I received.
She really REALLY cares about your success, which is the kind of attitude every professor should have, however she makes you work hard. Show up for class. Don't buy all the books until absolutely necessary, you most likely won't get through all of them. I really enjoyed the class, but I didn't enjoy the workload.
This professor cares about her students but is the hardest grader. The first half of this course is more of a English course on reading skills. She gives reading quizzes, did not learn much about death and dying, not a very good classs. It is exam week and I still dont know what my grade is because she does not put them into black board.
DEFINITELY would not recommend this professor or class to anyone. if you like religion and writing this is for you, but to every other average person, take another class with another professor. HORRIBLE TEACHER.
She sets the ground rules very early, and attendance is a must if you want to pass. There is a lot of reading, and you will get more out of the class if you make the effort to be a part of the classroom discussions. Tough, but fair. If you are looking for a class to coast in, this class, and any class she teaches is not it.
The crazy thing is that I told my dad I was taking this class and who the Prof was. He showed me this site, her name and scrolled down to 2004 when he left his review. bro, 20 years later and she's exactly the same. Exactly the same. I dropped her class. She almost got 2 of us out of the same family.
Professor Mowrey is intense, but really invested in student success. Attend class, engage with the material, and use resources like unstuckstudy to stay on top of the workload. It's a challenging course, but worth it if you put in the effort.
It is unfortunate that only Mowrey offers this class. You won't learn about the actual subject matter, but rather spend time agonizing over writing skills. Mowrey has her own idea of what classifies as acceptable writing, but does not share what that means until it's too late. Just get the book list to read independently and don't take the class.
