Very hard. Her lecture style's very disorganized. Class activity are meaningless. Can put anything on activity card & get full pts on participation. Hard to follow lecture.
really teaches!!
Professor Casem is not a bad teacher, like the two previous reviewers said. In fact, she is a very good teacher because she cares about student learning. She is always available for help in office hours, which is not the case for many of the other profs.
Wierd lady, she isn't very helpful and doesn't like too many questions. Her quizzes aren't hard, but she doesn't cover the stuff on them 100%
Dr casem is so funny and animated! She helps you whenever and really wants you to learn. Her class is a little hard, but it is worth it
puts stuff on tests that was never or VAGUELY covered in lecture. she wastes a lot of time drawing figures that don't make sense on the board and her lectures are VERY unorganized. horrible class and teacher. it's hard to know what she considers an A
She is a really awsome teachers... but to get a good grade on her comp quizzes you have to really read her notes book and on the major points refer to the textbook to get a good structured answer. Her reading quizzes are a breeze and she makes class fun
Her lecture style's very disorganized. Class activity are meaningless. Can put anything on activity card & get full pts on participation. I dont think anyone in the class learned anything. If you need to learn the material dont take her
She is a very good instructor. If you dont understand the lecture, go for office hours. Its a challenging class and you can do good only if you put your full effort in it.
Not an easy class, requires alot of effort. She uses her own book that has all the important info from the textbook but u have to know that book like the back of your hand, has a hard scale 93+A, so u have to put in ALOT ALOT of effort. Learned alot tho!
She is a good teacher. 93+ is an A in her class, but she curves the class at the end because the grades are not great in her classes because of too much work, daily quizzes. As long as you read a chapter per day, you will get an A or B. Don't procrastinat
Perfect! Excellent teacher.
Dr. Casem is great!!! The class itself is hard, but she is always finding ways to help make it easier!! I definitely recommend her!! If you make appointments to go talk to her it helps you also!! She enjoys cracking some interesting jokes too...
very nice teacher but the class is hard. she would try whatever she can to make things clear. exams can be difficult. final was difficult. get as many point as you can on the reading quizzes and the activities. DON'T PROCRASTINATE.
The perfect combination between a difficult class and wonderful instruction. Take her but pucker down for a long semester.
Casem is fun, she makes classes exciting and interesting. It's always a plus when your professors actually CARE about what they're doing, and she definitely does. It was conceptually a little tough for me, but if you study you're good to go.
I guess one thing I learned- Do the readings BEFORE you come to class. Also thought reading quizzes, activities were meaningless. Should just focus more on preparing class for 2-3 exams and a final. And, yes, thought lecture was a bit disorganized but sometimes, pictures helped clarify things.
for me it was a confusing subject, but she can be very helpful and understanding during her office hours. get her to give you a study guide prior to her comprehension quizzes. and the activities suck. get tj as a ta if you can, he rocks!
this class was okay. she was a very nice and sweet teacher. her comp quizzes were kind of hard because it's all based on short answer q's which show how much you know. she tries not to fail people which is good. so i would recommend her. advice: get good grades on your reading quizzes, they help alot.
She is extremely helpful. Visit her in the office hour and she will explain concepts in detail. Lot of quizzes, if you are scare of midterms. Pay attention in lectures than you will do fine.
Prof. Casem is so nice and do everything she can to help you.
For fall 05, you need 95% to get a solid A in her class and 92% for A-. It's an easy class with the regular grading scale but with this tough grading scale its not an easy A at all. Her final is worth 150 points and its not an easy one. So if you into the final having an A expect it to drop at least 5%. Other than that she's very nice and helpful.
hawtay!
shes a very nice professor but you have to do really good on your comp quizzes or else youre really going to screw up on the final. really pay attention to the worksheets cuz the quizzes will be built off of those. and her grading scale is kinda hard so its not an easy A.
Awsome teacher, but you have to work hard and keep up with the material. She curves the final grades. The worsheets she hands out are really helpful.
pay close attention in class, take lots and lots of notes. do her w/s she hands out, and take the time to study really hard, there's much to memorize.
Copm quizzes are 20 points each and you have 10 of them in the classes. No tests, just those quizzes. You have online reading quizzes, two points each = 50 points in the end. She drops like 3-5 quizzes. Lab is 40% of grade. Very good teacher. If anyone, she makes the subjec easy to understand.
She is the best CSUF bio prof. Cell bio is a hard class and has alot of info but she made her lectures understandable so that you could understand difficult concepts. For her finals, just study her comp quizzes and her "green book" to do well in the finals.
I've taken cell bio with Murray & Casem is by far the better teacher (obviously since I didn't pass Murray's class)!! Casem's teaching style is laid back & to the point. She uses lots of real world explanations & analogies so that her students understand what she's getting at. She makes the class so enjoyable and easy. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN
Dr. Casem is a great teacher, she really loves what she teaches, and gets you excited about the topic. I thought her tests were really challenging, so if you want a good grade study hard, this isn't a 'easy A' class. Attendance is important, some of the figures she uses are not in the book. Her exams are all written, and you write two papers.
there are 8 mini-midterms, short online reading quizes due before every class, and class participation points (PRS). lectures from PPTs that use textbook images = not helpful. she's not confident in her knowledge. lab was excruciatingly dull. exams were MC and short answer, including the final. didn't learn much from this class. wouldn't recommend
Dr. Casem is an outstanding professor. She does everything she possibly can to help you succeed, and is always willing to answer questions. That being said, the class is somewhat difficult, and it takes a significant amount of dedication and effort to do well. If you have to take Biology 172, take it with Dr. Casem.
Really bad Teacher .... hard quizez and hard final .... she is so picky and not helpful at all .... If u need good grade for 172 Avoid Casem
Her lecture style's very disorganized. Class activity are meaningless. Can put anything on activity card & get full pts on participation. I dont think anyone in the class learned anything. If you need to learn the material dont take her avoid her
Seriously those recent posters below me probably didn't even touch their books. She's a great teacher but at times she can get off topic. It's cellular biology so it is hard but you need to study yourself.I read her green book and survived that class with an A (God was helping too).Quizzes are fair (READ!)and masteringbio (online act),participation
she was how to teach, hard exams. bad professor.
She knows her stuff and she tries hard to explain it to the class. Assignments and tests were really hard and intentionally tricky but she gave us tests from the previous semester. It's hard to get a good grade in her class.
She's a great teacher and it's not too difficult to get a decent grade. Quizzes don't always match up with readings or lectures. Don't turn in anything late to lab. You won't get credit for it no matter what your excuse is.
Dr. Casem's lectures are interesting enough, but they do not prepare you for her comprehension quizzes. You need to be on your toes for Mastering Biology due dates and read the text. This class may be 100 level, but it's definitely not an easy A. I'm selling my PRS for $30 and text book for $100. email: [email protected]
I personally do not like dr casem or her teaching style. She makes lectures interesting but does not prepare you for tests. She will help you if you ask questions but she kind of does not really show that she cares about your grade.the test averages for both midterms were Ds and she thought we had the problem not her.
Really enjoyed the lectures. She has a great personality and is interesting, but there were a lot of topics covered cursorily that you really needed to have seen before, even though it's an entry course.Didn't prefer format the school uses;Mastering Bio is cool, but only as a supplement- NOT helpful as a teaching tool.Study for this one from the start!
Dr. Casem has an unusual lecture style that is not extremely organized but it is effective if you try to work with it. She is one of the most down to earth professors I've had at CSUF and very approachable in office hours. Her tests are difficult but just study hard. However, the curve was only 2% this semester so don't count on much there.
Exams are very tough. They are very specific she ask for things that weren't even covered in the class lectures. However, she is a very nice and funny person. She also might curve but depending on class performance.
She is NOT organized, and her lecture is nothing but complete mess; they do not help you understand the material. You basically need to read the book and study. Her activity is covered in exams but its instruction is very opaque. Her wording on exams is extremely confusing and her grading policy sucks
Her exams do not correlate to any of her lectures. I've read through the book and taken notes outside of class and studied 3 hours daily. Yet her test average is 50-70%. Honestly, to get an A on this class you have to go even further then needed. If she was a good teacher, I wouldn't need to go FURTHER TO JUST GET A C!!
I never know the definition of troll test before until I take this class. There is a test every 2 weeks and the average is low. It is low not because the test is hard the but the level of trickiness makes it so difficult to choose the right answer due to the ambiguity of the questions and other answer choices. Take if you like tricky multiple choic
Very time consuming and crazy amounts of studying involved. Her lectures are a bit all over the place, she does try to make class interesting. Her exams are very difficult, no matter how hard I studied I always seemed to have done worse than before. Very stressful. If you're up for the challenge, go for it. Good Luck.
Ahh the agony of 172. She expects you to know specific details and very picky on your answers. She is an upper division professor so her expectation for an introductory course like this is quite high. Make sure you go to her office hours for extra help. Don't depend on the curve because she does not curve!
This course was intended to be hard. I personally think my bio 171 teacher was harder. We had to know number of species, scientist, and random facts. Casem didn't ask for any of those. Her exams were tricky but i always called someone over to clarify and i got an A. Not an easy A but no bio class is. Use her outlines best way to study.
Dr. Casem is a great prof, she will re-explain lectures if u don't understand, has really good analogies, all the people that go to office hours got above avg grades. do well in everything and u should get a B even if u suck in exams. exams r MC and very tricky if u don't know ur material well u will be tricked. lab is easy.
Hardest exams I have ever taken in my life. You need to attend her office hours if you wanted to excel in her class. Prepare to study for hours and hours to do well in this class. Take advantage of getting the best grade in Lab so it can bump up your lecture grade if you are struggling with getting an A. The book is useless for her class.
She is an amazing teacher. She expects you to actually learn and apply what you have learned. The reviews on this are not accurate and cant believe people sometime...Overall she is a great professor
very helpful office hours, if you don't have questions, just listen to what others ask. she likes to connect everything, look for "why" answers. very helpful online print sheets, follow along in lecture! loves what she does, I never felt sleepy in her class :)
She is one of the most interesting professors you'll ever have! Her lectures are awesome!! She uses a lot of cool analogies to learn the material. Personally, you might want to attend the SI workshops and study her notes to pass the class. The activities are also on the test.
Many test(6) but theyre only 50pt each &pretty easy. It's a core class,If you cant pass this class you have no business in science.Do the outlined study guides she gives you, some of her short answer questions come from there. Also, if you don't understand something she says, read the book..seems simple but you'd be surprised how many people fail
Dr. Casem is a nice person and very friendly. BUT, her tests were ridiculous for this class. Even if you felt like you knew the answer, her multiple choice made it very tricky to be 100% sure. I did much better on the writing sections. Exams every two weeks, NO CURVE, and time-wasting outside the class assignments. Sorry Casem, but this class sucks
Dr. Casem is hilarious. She is a bit disorganized, but I don't think that takes away from what she is trying to teach. She is VERY willing to help. (I took this class before switching majors). Honestly, if you can't handle 172 get out of biology. You need to study… ITS SCIENCE!! Like all other SCIENCE courses, you need to study to do well. Period.
The wording on her tests are tricky and throw you off. Lab class is boring. She grades you on attendance and makes you go to SI and other things outside of class for points. I thought it was ridiculous considering I was working and had a full schedule. If you want an A study hard for tests and go to office hours.
Highly recommended. She makes biology fun and easy to learn. Most importantly, she has an evident passion for what she does and makes sure everyone understands the material. Great class!
Good instructor and knowledgeable about the subject. Make sure to read the section of the book before attending the lecture. If you don't, it makes it harder to understand. Studied A LOT. Tough class, good instructor.
I receive A's in pretty much every other class. She is not a good professor. The ones who praise her are the ones who have had extensive knowledge of biology beforehand. She explicitly stated that she makes her M.C tricky and distributes grades to the bell curve (meaning she wants people to fail). Average exam scores: 68% w no curve. GL Avoid.
Dr. Casem is a great professor. She is always available to answer questions and will schedule times outside of her office hours to help students. The course material is hard but she is pretty good at clarifying so students understand the concepts. Lab and SI help boost your grade.
No gonna lie her tests are tough BUT she is a really good teacher. I highly recommend reading the textbook before her lectures. She gives you the little details in class that help you tie it to the reading. She has an awesome teaching style that makes the harder concepts a lot easier to understand. Hard class but you learn a lot!
She is a nice lady. Lectures are fine exams are what kill you. She changes stills every semester so you don't know if your exams will be frq or mc. Lab was easy. No curve at all. She has assignments due for her class that just take up your time. I had a 69.1% in class and 95% in lab and she didn't pass me despite emailing her several times.
"Tests are tough"- couldn't agree more with this tag! She definitely makes her tests hard even though you mastered the lectures and the book. However, after the first midterm, you can predict what type of questions she's looking for. The class itself is a lot of work; 4 midterms, 1 final, research articles, case studies... so you need to work hard.
Dr. Casem is very passionate about what she does and I actually enjoyed lecture BUT her exams ARE tough. I got 2 D's, 1 C and one B+ (87%) on the 4 exams and my overall grade was a B+. You cannot get by in this class if you do not review notes. I really liked Dr. Casem and she was a huge help in office hours but be prepared to study every day.
I've never had a professor so disorganized. The tests weren't meant to test you on what you knew but how well you could get past her tricks. She's nice as a person and if you ask for help, but the lectures are horrendous.
Her tests are tricky because of the wording and she doesn't have clear multiple choice answers--theyre all somewhat right or sound right just one is the MOST right. She's also the type of teacher to post a reading on titanium and check on her computer if you've read it yet or not--without emailing you to do so and then grades you for it. 30 pts...
Study. Don't procrastinate. Gives lots of study tools, I would recommend doing the Weekly Q and Learning Targets before each quiz and test. Actual grade in the class is unclear until end of the semester, and little behind grading. Test questions are weird and specific to her "mind" so try and think of the most right answer. Good luck!
Things are not very clear, seems overwhelming at times. Also, exams are extremely difficult even with putting a lot of effort to pass. Extremely tough class.
Take every opportunity for points she gives. I got D's on all of my tests and ended with a C- . I could have gotten a B if I took advantage of her office hours and read the book before I knew it actually helped. Her lectures are great and she's a kind lady, but her tests make you second guess.
really abstract teacher
She's silly and will go off topic a lot. Print out her lecture slides and be prepared to write down everything she says. Exams are heavy on her lectures, her workbook, and your own understanding. Definitely go to as many SI sessions as you can. Do everything she asks and don't miss out on easy points.
She is funny and out there. Test are weird and hard but she gives tons of ways to make up the points. Take advantage of extra points in the beginning. This was a tough class, but I think it is suppose to be. (big dr. who fan)
Professor Casem is a great professor. She makes you apply your critical thinking skills while giving you all the tools necessary to succeed. For example, we had an assignment to create a hypothetical discussion for a paper. She looked over all three of my drafts and gave me constructive criticism on ALL of them! She is a true gem to academia.
If I could take her over and over again I would. She is the best, seriously.
Professor Casem is amazing, she truly cares about her students success. She does expect for students to put in the work. She assigns a lot of homework and her tests can be a bit difficult/confusing. She makes lectures great by adding much needed humor. She does requires student to either go to office hours or SI every week but it really helps
Professor Casem is a pretty great professor. She provides all the resources you might need to pass the class, from posting all her lecture notes to providing the topics the quizzes were centered around. A lot of the work though is based on your work effort, so if you study, read the textbook, and go to SI, you'll be good.
Dr Casem, shes very passionate about biology. She does iclickers. She had two papers and worksheets and guided reading to help with studying for a grade. She also has 5 exams/one is dropped. She gives EC occasionally, depending on classs average. TIP:theres diff books, look up topic in index. READ BEFORE CLASS, class is more of a review in depth
This class was honestly a waste of my time, I felt like I learned nothing and wasted money. Besides that, the professor herself is a great person; she is always willing to help in whatever circumstance. It is just the course itself that is useless, I am sure that if she taught a different course, the class would be clear and concise.
Dr Casem is an amazing biology teacher. The assignments she gives will really help you to understand and retain information for her exams. Her lectures are interesting and she is always willing to explain concepts further.
She is not a very clear professor and her tests are very detail oriented. Her lectures cover the general concepts but never the details which is very important.
Worst professor possible. Very unclear with her grading, always drifts away from the lesson to talk about her life. Exams are difficult, you must read the book. Do NOT take her
