She is a super caring and understanding prof. She has a specific grading criterion that is hard to get good marks on sometimes, even if you think you did your best. I would recommend taking this class though. As long as the topic isn't refugees!
She is a good professor. She is clear about feedback.
She is a very tough grader. It is totally a GPA dragger!! AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is tough but fair. She gives a lot of good advice.
Great prof!!
She is nice and patient. I am satisfied with my grade. She is not so bad but WRDS150 is hard. Her lecture is boring. If you follow her and finish all the tasks, you will not fail.
I had her class in summer and I am glad I did. She was caring and spent extra time outside her office hours to discuss my research. Follow the instructions carefully and you will do well in class.
Her lectures may not be that helpful. However, the assignments given by her really improved my writing which was helpful not just for this class but all my courses. Very funny, caring and approachable.
I like the way the prof teach. She is very cute and very interesting person. I believe everyone will love her lecture.
Her lecture are pretty dry, though her feedbacks on your essays do make your writing better. However, she could be a really harsh marker and her criteria may be hard to achieve sometimes.
Apparently anyone can post on this site and I don't see why anyone would bother to take this seriously. Dr. Kim's class was fun but you need to work to get decent marks.
Lots of readings but this is how the course arranged. She is a good prof and willing to spend much time discussing your homework (research paper etc.) if you would like to have some advice.
Her lectures are pretty boring (don't take them in the morning) and attendance counts for marks. There are a lot of writing assignments and she doesn't mark easy, but its pretty fair & her feedback is helpful for improving your writing. If you show interest in your research subject and improving your writing, she will like you and help you succeed.
Mi-Young is very funny and takes time to know each of her students. She structures the class around preparing for the final paper, which was really helpful. The assignments took time, but were very straight forward. Make sure you read her criteria sheets thoroughly! She can be a tough grader, but is always willing to give additional feedback.
Nice and caring. Follow the instructions and pay attention to details, and you will do fine.
Mi-Young is such a caring prof who cares about her students a lot. Although she is a tough grader, you learn from your mistakes because she points them out specifically. This was the first English class where I actually came out learning a lot about writing. Would 10/10 recommend Mi-Young, but get ready to put in some work!
There are 6 core readings, one main paper and few assignments and midterms but the content is very much manageable and didn't require much work. Mi-Young is very sweet and quirky like a cute auntie and she was really nice and refreshing to have. Flexible content to write a paper on with fads/fashion/fit so it was a lot more enjoyable than expected!
Although Mi Young is a good professor, she is a very tough grader. I work hard in the class and put time into it, but Ive only received grades below 80. This isnt just me, its my whole classmates. So if you want a A+ in her class you better work 10-15 hours a week for this course (what she recommends).
The classes are unorganized and all over the place. The assignments are not overly difficult but are time-consuming. Her office hours got canceled a lot and assignments took forever to get marked. She is a tough grader and grades didn't come out until after the final exam, so throughout the entire semester you don't know what you're getting.
She is one of the most helpful teachers I've had - always available and gives helpful feedback. Super caring but you have to work.
very nice prof who cares about her students, but she is a very tough marker. This class is also very assignment heavy, but if you put in the effort and do the required work, you should be ok. Just dont except extremely high grades.
Mi-Young is the nicest prof I've ever met! If you love K-pop especially BTS, please choose her WRDS150 for fads, fashion, and fit. The overall average of this class is usually quite low, but if you attend each class, you should be good for the final. Her classes ware always enjoyable, and she is always there to help and give feedback.
This woman is too confused. Her lectures are very disorganized and confusing at times. A lot of times she forgets what she is talking about. She has very high exceptions from her students even though she is not setting a great example as a teacher. she takes forever to mark papers. Avoid her please!
Her lectures are terrible. It's all over the place and she isn't great at communication. Also, she spends way too much time showing videos and talking about things that you might not be interested in. She also doesn't explains her assignments and tests very well.
Helpful but tough grader. Very friendly and approachable, a lot of small assignments
Profs like Mi-Young make me angry. She is a very tough marker which means she doesn't care about students succeeding. She posts up an example of the best paper from her former students and even the best paper received only 86% grade. She is proud of the fact that most students get only 2.5 or 3 out of 4 on the R&Rs. Disorganized lectures! Avoid!
Prof likes her makes me happy :) she gives me thorough feedback and is always available. made this online class fun.
The only prof at UBC that doesn't include a grade section on Canvas! You don't even know what is your grade compare to the class average. The course is online, so you can't even talk to your class mates to find out how you are performing compare to others. Only 2 weeks left until the end of the term and she has barely marked the papers.
She was open to answer questions about the assignments and tried to help you to the best of her ability. The topic she chose this year was quite interesting as well.
Prof MY gave really good feedback on all our assignments and made the grading criteria clear (class was quite hard tho :/), however some assignments did take quite a bit to mark. She was really accessible outside of class and she is good at responding to questions.
Today is Dec 23. I'm still waiting for the following grades to be released: In class summary that was done 13 weeks ago, genre analysis that was done 6 weeks ago, group assignment that was done 4 weeks ago, presentation that was done 4 weeks ago, & participation that was done through out the term. How can one improve without any feedback? AVOID!
I loved her class -too bad it was online. Go to her office hrs -she is quite helpful. super friendly n approachable.
Lectures are disorganized. Found it hard to stay focused in class as she rambles about things that don't pertain to class material. If you enjoy K-Pop/BTS, consider taking her course, otherwise AVOID (because that's all she talks about). To do well, stay caught up on all assignments and meet with her during office hours to clarify anything.
Loved her class! approachable, understanding, and prompt in responding to emails. Would highly recommend it!!
great prof!
in my 2nd term realizing how good this course was
disorganized lectures, rambles to herself, spends the entire lecture going over bad examples or irrelevant anecdotes and ends up unable to go over important content. two weeks away from the end and the only marks given back are worth 4% of the whole course. she's nice and clearly tries but very unpleasant if you value efficiency.
Would I take her course again? YES. She has given me constructive feedback often outside the class and off her office hours as I am overseas at the moment and asked for extra office hours. very caring and fun! Be aware she is very detailed and notes everything.
loved her class, approachable and kind. too many assignments ><
Mi-Young is a really nice professor who cares about her students. If you go to her office hours she basically gives you all the answers you need. The bad thing about her is that she takes forever to mark papers so you dont really have a good idea of your grade during the course. She is also a tough marker but this is normal for UBC profs.
Mi-Young is incredibly caring and thoughtful. You'll learn so many interesting things from her lectures (including about BTS and K-pop!). Make sure to attend her office hours throughout the research process, especially when first choosing your topic she is always willing to offer guidance and support.
Based on the ratings, I decided to go with Mi-Young. Don't recommend. wouldn't take the class with her again. Goes on tangents for so long during lecture that we go overtime and even admits it. Tough marker and lots of work. If you go to office hours to ask one question she'll go on and on.
The way to succeed in Mi-Young's class is to look at the examples and grading rubrics she gives out. Ensure that you include all the components stated and follow the structure. See her in office hours too because she will tell you specifically what to change and improvements. Little work too compared to other wrds. Participate and she will reward.
To add to what's been already said, she likes error free and coherent writing. Make sure you check your writing before submitting it. She also gives chances to revise various assignments after peer feedback which really helped me improve.
God I am so thankful I'm done with this course. Professor Mi-Young is sweet as a whole, but she is the most disorganized and untimely person you will ever come across. She never returns assignments on time which means you don't get feedback and she gives so much work. Harsh grader as well. Do NOT take this class.
nice prof!
come to class, participate, and ask her questions about your research! one of the most helpful classes I've taken at ubc.
i didn't expect much but was fun- very quick in replying to emails and available outside class. highly recomm.
plenty of samples, rubrics, and examples for each assignment; helpful and incredibly caring. highly recommend.
Participate and she will reward you!
As far as WRDS 150 profs go, Mi-Young is one of the best. She understands that it's a hard course because so many kids have never done anything in academic writing. She understands it's a degree requirement and thus not the priority of many students. She gives few readings and a very short research paper compared to other profs.
If you pay attention in class, this class will be a breeze. WRDS 150B class sizes are typically quite small (30 students/section), so participation matters. Clear marking schemes provided and deadlines mentioned well ahead by Dr. Kim. Main drawback: a tough grader and has stated that her sections typically fall below the overall course avg
Mi-Young is a very caring and sweet individual. However, I find her lectures to be boring because she just talks for the whole class. I recommend really focusing on all the research paper related components (especially the final paper). Her quizzes/tests are really hard to do good on. Make sure you participate and go to her office hours!
it's nice that we can research about whatever we're interested in, as long as it's remotely related to the class topic; don't get behind and go to office hours often and she literally walks you through the whole process of research.
Grading was very unclear and she never got us things back on time, so you never knew how you were doing. She was an okay lecturer, but sometimes it was hard to understand what she was saying. The class was super easy, so it's not too much of an issue though.
Very helpful and accessible outside class, but you need to work!
She takes pride in her section average falling below the faculty average, feel free to check ubcgrades. com she takes the whole class talking about random things and watching Kpop videos, does not provide any feedback, does not mark assignments in a timely manner, has smaller assignments which are difficult to do well on, very hard unclear marker
Dr. Kim had boring lectures. I learned a lot about academic writing. There are teachers with higher averages than Dr. Kim so I would recommend looking at UBCGRADES to find a teacher with a better average. She is not the worst though.
Dr. Kim was the most caring professor I've had in my first year at ubc, often accessible outside the class. THere is no textbook and you need to attend the lectures to grasp things. Make sure you get your work done on time and go to her office hours for feedback. She gives helpful feedback and advice as long as you ask.
fun but tough - finding your research topic early on is a way to excel in the course. go to office hours as she does help out a lot.
My fav so far at ubc. Pay attention in class and this class will be a breeze. It will help if you know what you want to research about. Major assignments are toward the end of the term - in the last three weeks or so.
Tough grader
Mi-Young was one of my sweetest profs this semester, however that does not make up for her lack of teaching skills. Also, assignments were handed back months later, marked unfairly. I should also note this class does not include a final exam, but rather a final research paper that takes A LOT of time! Pro tip: start your research in late October!
clear guidelines, very quick replies to emails, and caring. I highly recommend it!
Professor Kim is one of the best professors I've ever had. She has the kindest soul and cares so much about her students. She is really passionate about her job and that carries over to the class. She is always available to answer questions. As long as you care and do what you need to do, you can benefit a lot from this class.
Prides herself in having the lowest WRDS150B average in the english faculty. Rambles on so much in class she literally has to set timers for herself on her phone. Does not return work quickly and marks harshly if you do not participate well in class. If you are in her section for WRDS150B I would highly advise finding a new section ASAP.
I have exactly the opposite things to say about her class. My wrds150 class average was 74, higher than other classes. She was super helpful, always available even on weekends. When I emailed her, she responded literally in a split second! This was also the easiest A I got at ubc. Just do your work and you will be rewarded.
An incredibly tough marker and genuinely does not care about her students. She jokes about being harsh and tells stories about giving students 0s for handing in assignments minutes late. I think if I told her I was hospitalized and could not physically finish an assignment on time, she would still mark me late.
It seems like you either love or hate prof. Mi-Young Kim. Personally I had a terrible time in her class. She is an insanely hard grader who hands back assignments months after they are due. It is insanely frustrating to spend days working/preparing for an assignment and following the guidelines to a tee, only to get a sub-par grade.
NEVER choose her section unless you want to get a C or D on your grade sheet. She pretends to be nice but a nice professor will never give such low marks to nearly every assignment that students put effort into. I literally want to cry when I see my work get graded so harshly. I regret not switching the section before I could.
She is caring and hard-working and she expects her students to do the same. I've had opportunities to improve my work with her help during office hours. My advice is to go to the office hours and ask for help - she will give it to you!
I learned a lot about academic writing and research although not in my field. Do not sign up if you want an easy A - so much work! Readings are fun -chatgpt- but not easy.
Would not recommend this prof if you want to be happy, tons of work compared to other WRDS classes and shes a hard marker. Never gives clear guidelines on how to improve on work, prides herself on being a harsh grader, only shows kpop videos in class. Lectures are long and not interesting, lots of rambling and reading from slides.
I guess people who rate her bad did not do well in her course? I highly recommend this prof if you want to be happy and do meaningful work. She gives clear guidelines on how to improve on work with lots of comments and rubrics, and she keeps her classes fun and engaging. Lectures are interesting if you care about current issues like chatgpt.
As an engineering student, I thought that physics or math would be my hardest course this year, but it was WRDS with her. I seriously think taking this course is going to ruin my chances of getting into my goal specialization next year. Not only because this class was my lowest mark, but also because it took so much time away from studying others.
wrds150 is notorious for being difficult. Be aware that it has an insane number of assignments - not graded by a few things like some people said? - but they were not bad. Stay on track and you will be fine.
I took her course and I can say there are definitely much better and easier prof for this course to get a good grade. Her course is my lowest mark in my grades from all 9 courses She was so tough grader, and her lectures and her reading were so boring only about South Korea and K-POP.
WRDS150 has many sections with different topics and make sure you check them out before signing up. Miyoung's section had three subtopics (certainly not all about kpop) and you can choose your own topic which was nice. Don't sign up if you don't care about writing or research.
her lectures are pretty boring and not really useful to doing well in her class. her quizzes and tests are super hard and have the weirdest multi-select questions. i would recommend picking a different prof for your wrds class since there's definitely easier profs out there
my advice is to pick your topic early on and start working on it before things get busy. Make good use of class materials on canvas. its not hard but takes up a lot of time.
Mi-Young was a very caring and kind teacher. She marked a bit hard but she set really clear grading criteria and put specific feedback and things to change about my work. She had office hours every week and they were very helpful. Often there would only be a few people in them and she could go over practically every sentence of your work with you.
Constantly interrupted students, marks student for assignments they weren't even in the group for, gave important feedback before the next assignment to random students because she didn't have time to mark everyone's.
unnecessarily hard grader for a required first year course. they should scale/standardize the course averages. Some profs give out 90+ like nothing and she doesn't give out 90+ at all. Her average is significantly lower compared to other sections as well.
I just checked my mark! class avg 75 and I got A-!! i feel rewarded for my hard work (had two courses and a pt job). Don't take this prof if you are not serious about your courses. she is.
I was dreading this course for a while now, dropping wrds for the 3/4th time, but Mi-Young is a really good professor. She is enthusiastic, making lectures interesting and engaging. Online summer course with 6 research papers as textbooks, which are pretty short and interesting. Choosing a good topic and participation is required to succeed.
Mi-young is a tough grader but if you go to her office hours she gives specific feedback which let me do well on the final paper. While her lectures may be boring since they are 3 hours long in the summer, she seems enthusiastic about the topics. The course load isn't too bad as I was able to keep up while working full time.
SHE IS INSANE SHE GIVES YOU SO MUCH WORK she's nice and enthusiastic BUT PLEASE MY IF YOU SEE THIS CAN YOU CHILL OUT ON QUIZZES PLEASE
Her lectures might get a bit boring since she talks about scientific writing for the entire class, but she seemed like a caring prof. There wasn't too much work overall but the marked assignments never received high or full marks. Only signed up to fulfill the communication requirement.
Nice prof, grading misleading
Shes such a sweet prof but man is she a hard grader. My advice to anyone taking her class is going to office hours, she gives more specific feedback that help you do better on the final paper.
The class is set up well in terms of the assignments assisting you in the final paper, however, you must heavily rely on the peer reviews (which can vary on quality) as she is a VERY slow marker. Lectures are boring and she takes attendance. The quizzes are really tough, especially since this is a class that many people put off.
go to office hours and don't leave stuff to the last minute. it helps more than you think.
She was very nice and kind, and tries to engage in the meetings as much as possible. She is aware students are forced to take the course and many might not enjoy it, but she still tries to be as helpful as possible. Would recommend
Mi-Young is a very kind prof. She does have high expectations, so make sure you go to office hours and ask questions if you want a high grade.
