really nice guy and willing to help but the quizzes are way to hard even after studying the material.
Good teacher, who wants to help the students. Just ask. The quizzes are not hard, as long as you pay attention and skim the reading assignments.
I love Brother Abel's class. There are no tests or finals, just one paper and a bunch of quizzes. The quizzes are not cummulative either, just the reading and the lecture since the last quiz. If you do the reading and look over your notes an A is very obtainable. Love the structure of the class, I'm taking his 360 course as a freshman.
No quizzes. Loves sociology of religion. Class discussions are awesome, he's a great moderator. Generally. Very thurough and clear, and when he's not will re-explain until you get it.
Tough class that is quite boring. I wasn't interested in talking about dead theorists ideas. I thought the class would talk about how various religions effect our current society. Quizzes everyday, no tests. The quizzes were no bueno.
He is a hard teacher but you get a lot out of the class
He's a very entertaining teacher and made the class amazingly fun. He gives pop quizzes instead of tests. It was a great class!
What can I say, the man is super nice, but I'm not a fan of his teaching style. He gives weekly pop quizzes which you really have to study for otherwise you will fail. He respects and considers others opinions, and tries to help everyone understand the material. However the way that he presents the material, puts me right to sleep. Overhead format
he is a good teacher, but i think because he is newer, he feels like he has to be tough. I really enjoyed the class, but it was hard and i didn't like his teaching style.
it's easy.. you have to come to class and take notes/read the powerpoints on his site. he's newer so his teaching styles change every semester.. or so i've heard. the quizzes are so easy... seriously. you just have to skim the book and remember the notes. 10 questions.
the class was not as bad as its reputation. he is still evolving his teaching style, and is very approachable. watch out though- he will talk your ear off. dont go to his office if you have to be somewhere within an hour.
Totally unclear about what he wants and a little shaky with his teaching, just needs to man up and get his own style and not try to copy other teachers.
Brother Abel rocks!!! I loved this class! He can be tough but he's fair in how he grades students' papers. It was a fun class and I was able to learn a lot! As long as you're willing to prepare and participate, you will do well!
I liked this class a lot! Just pay attention and read chapters. Quizes are pretty easy if you study just before. No comprehensive tests! Quizes are mostly based on lectures and some about the book. His lectures are really funny and easy to understand. I would rather be in his class then just read his power points. I would recommend his class!
Great teacher, his classes are fun and you learn a lot. Tough but fair grader so don't think you can breeze through it.
Amazing teacher, you will learn a lot from him. He's a great guy and loves sociology. He's not a easy grader so don't think you can throw stuff together an hour before class.
He's a nice guy but I won't take him again. His teaching method is too vague and the analyses that he assigns aren't clear. I think this is because he is a younger professor trying to find his style. However, he is just too confusing for me. I would not recommend him.
Great sense of humor. Sometimes is hard to follow and can be hardnozed. Has made a couple of students cry, but mostly because they were not doing the work and he made them accountable. I liked the class.
He is a very good teacher. Some of the students complain that he is unfair in the grading of his analyses. This is simply because they are not bright enough to understand the concepts or they are not puting in enough time. I learned a ton from his class and look forward to taking him again. He is a great teacher and wonderful sociologist!
At first I didn't like his teaching style too much and complained he was a little unfair, but honestly if you are prepared, and do your readings and pay attention then he is the easiest teacher ever! I had no interest in Sociology and after him I considered making it my major. He's very interesting. Love his examples and experiences he tells!
Abel is an awesome teacher. He knows his stuff, and will help you if you put forth the effort. Many complain of his grading style, but I think that's the way college should be- where you actually have to earn your A instead of just expecting it. I learned a lot from his classes and loved him as a teacher!
Not my favorite. Closed minded. Thinks he know everything. Thumbs Down.
is the best dressed in the department for sure. Has a style that is comparable to that of individuals like elton john/pablo escobar. Class is easy if you are paying attention. super helpful when you ask, but you have to ask, he wont just give you handouts.
He comes off as tough in the begining of the semester, but that is just to weed out the students who want an easy grade. If you take the time to study, he will recognize that and help you with the material- but you have to go to him. His door is always open, but he likes to talk a lot so make sure you have time when you go visit him.
Great teacher!! really supportive and happy to help even outside of class. hope to take another class from him again. he's smart cause he has a PHd.
GREAT PROFESSOR! As long as you study you will do fine. He is way fun, super entertaining, and if you think he's egotistical you don't get his sense of humor. He is funny and knows his subject matter very well.
For those that dont like this guy... wtf is your problem? you obviously into your own little idea and view of how things are. He is trying to get you to view things in a different way - as a sociologist would. as for clarity? he only has a few assignments- the rest is quiz's on your daily reading. its so easy. he actually cares for his students
He is hilarious and you can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. Pretty easy class, in class quizzes, and essays, no tests! Just go to class, pay attention, and you will be fine. :)
He is great, really funny and helpful. But you have to work hard. But its worth it. Because you learn a lot.
It's a hard class if u don't work for it,he is very specific with the work, be ready to spend loads of time on projects. Don't ask him for help go to the tutor its more helpful.
Brother Abel is a great teacher! The quizzes are tricky but if you study the material, you will do well. He's very willing to help when you ask. You don't have tests, which is nice, you just have to write papers to demonstrate your understanding, it's great!
This was a really good class, Brother Abel makes class fun and interesting. The class quizzes are actually pretty hard, but if you study hard for them you will do fine. But NO TESTS! A few papers, though. I learned a lot.
This professor is one of the mean professors ever. I concluded that he is in fact races. He does not clarifies when a student goes into his office for help. I advise not to take him if you are colored.
This class was a joke.He is very inconsiderate and rude.I would advise you to take ANY other teacher. His quizzes are a joke & I felt that class time was a huge waste of time. This teacher probably should not be teaching here.I will NEVER take a class from him again!!!!!
I love Bro. Abel he is the greatest teacher ever! I would highly recommend taking classes from him because his classes are always fun. The most important thing of all is that he teaches by the spirit and loves what he does. He knows the material and is able to teach with clarity, examples, experiences, and analogies.
For many class periods I wandered if I was learning anything of value. I was astounded at the end of the course just how much I had learned. Great insights, sense of humor, and open to learning himself. Excellent class.
Brother Abel knows what he's talking about! As long as you thoughtfully do the reading and pay attention in class, you'll be fine with the quizzes (he doesn't give tests!!) Anyone who thinks he is offensive doesn't know what's goin on. He has a dry sense of humor, ya just have to keep up :) the man is hilarious.
Lame. Does not clarify. Does not teach well. Does not grade well. The students teach each other, I learned more from my classmates. He grades you on how "entertaining" you are. Wish there was a different Professor for the Core Sociology classes.
Brother Abel made the sociology of religion real to our class. He's kind of a sarcastic guy, but a fun teacher. Made the sociological theories easy to understand.
You are always taking quizzes and it is hard if you don't fully comprehend the reading. You MUST read.
Very fun class, he's funny and stays on topic. Just do the reading and you'll do great on the once a week quizzes! Follow the guidelines for the one page papers and final paper and it is an Easy A!
Sort of liked him but i felt like he was unreasonable. Two teacher and a tutor thought a paper i wrote was A material and i got a low grade. Dont take him unless you are 100%sure that you will do exactly he says because the only right way is his way.
Go to class everyday! And do your reading, or you won't do well on the quizzes. I did terribly on the majority of the quizzes, but I still got a B+ in the class. Papers are fairly simple. He keeps class interesting and you have lots of group work. Look forward to class everyday and learned a lot. He is also has a great sense of humor!
CAUTION LAZY PEOPLE: great professor to take a class from if you want to be challenged. The readings for his class can be difficult/intense but he makes them worth it. He's a tough grader so don't take him if you're lazy or are unwilling to meet with him and have him edit/review your papers before hand.
Brother Able is an awesome teacher. His classes are interesting and worth the hard work. Dont take it if you want a free ride. You earn your grade. There is lots of group work but you get to grade the members and choose them. I would take him again for sure.
good teacher, but he is the hardest grader i have never met. he is so picky with your homwork. I was seriously thinking he had OCD
Bother Abel is over the top & he is a hard grader. There are so many group projects! It's almost like he doesn't realize that everyone has other classes besides his. If it wasn't required to graduate I wouldn't have taken it. His way or the highway. I got a decent grade & you learn some good stuff, but his teaching style is exhausting.
Great teacher, but hard classes. Do the readings and assignments and youll manage
This has been one of my favorite classes! The material is relatively easy to learn and he makes every single class period interesting! I would definitely recommend taking this course!
Very good teacher. His course is consistent and you always know exactly what he expects out of you. No tests, only weekly quizzes during class time.
It is a hybrid so almost all the learning is independent and if you miss one class you miss a lot of points towards the grade. but he is funny and helpful
In Sociology of Religion he was a great teacher, learned a lot and had so much fun. Easy enough A if you try. In Theory, he's much more difficult but I still learned a lot and it was worth it. Good teacher overall but you have to work for your grade.
This class was way harder than I expected, the quizzes are really hard. But the good news is that at the end he offers extra credit. Also, TALK TO THE TA, that's how I was able to get missed points back.
I don't what everyone is talking about. He tells you exactly what he expects in the homework and if you miss points on something he tells you how to fix it so you get the points the next time. PLUS he doesn't believe in tests.
Will not excuse university approved absences, despite school policy to contrary. Gave me a zero for a day I missed for a field trip, despite having given him the proper notification and paper work. Would not give a chance to make up grade even after I had learned he was in fact in violation of policy and had reported him.
He is a good teacher. He has a number of quizzes and you never know if he is doing one that day . But as long as you do the reading you will be fine. Good teacher
People who take him for the first time are overwhelmed because he teaches expecting his students to be prepared to discuss the readings. No he is not super easy in the way of not needing to do the work, however he is crystal clear about what he expects. He will give you honest feedback on your paper and let you rework it if you did it early.
I loved Bro. Abel's class. He makes us think, and participate. I feel like those people who say his classes are difficult say that because they want an "A" handed to them. Come on people, you're in college. Do the work, you'll get a fine grade.
Abel uses lectures and class activities to teach. If you read what you're assigned to read, you will enjoy the class and will learn. Abel is a fair grader and he usually drops 2 of your lowest grades at the end of the semester to account for being sick or a school trip. Straight up nice guy.
This class could be so much fun, if I din;t have to spend half of my school life reading his assignments. He says he doesn't believe in testing but his stupid quizzes are ridiculous. He has no compassion when grading, nor he cares if you have an emergency or any disabilities he cares less. I'm glad this is a church school otherwise..
WE had group grades that were effected by attendance and test scores. OTHER PEOPLE EFFECT YOUR GRADE. We had team mates go home for family deaths and he made no excuses. We all got a lower grade unless we kicked some one out of our group for uncontrollable circumstances. then they would get a 0. He has no tests but grades heavy on trick quizzes.
Brother Abel knows what he is talking about. He doesn't believe in tests but his quizzes are SOOO hard it is ridiculous. Also attendance is mandatory and he doesn't care if there is an emergency he will just say to bad, I don't make exceptions. I got a B but still...
I worked my tail off for a decent grade. He weighs heavily on group grades and Big projects. He doesn't like tests but he loves projects. At least in this class, be prepared to not have a life if you want a decent grade
I enjoyed the class. He is easy going. He will spend time 1 on 1 to answer questions. Even for a college course it wasn't too bad. I really thought his grading was fair and I am saying this as a slacker student.
so much work for this class it isn't even funny. I got an A after completely destroying my social life.
Bro. Abel is a good guy, but his instructions are as clear as brick. This class was a hybrid, so all homework is online. I was marked down points several times because he added in invisible criteria, and his quizzes are ridiculously tricky (unfairly tricky). Study the chapter material 20 times, because the quiz can clothesline you.
Honestly, I thought he was a decent teacher! If you want to get an A in this class, you just have to do your work. He requires a lot of reading, and if you don't read the whole chapter thoroughly, you'll fail the quizzes. But overall, the class is easy and really interesting! He's a nice guy and tells awesome stories for examples!
No tests, lots of reading with quizes, lots of groupwork. I thought the class was fun, passable, and really helped me learn the material. I think he's a great teacher. And the groupwork is not as bad as everyone said, just pick a good group.
Has clear, if high, expectations of students. However, meeting these expectations is possible as he is one of the most willing to help professors I encountered in the department. He was always easy to find in his office and willing to offer feedback. If you are not a procrastinator, he is an incredibly valuable resource. Fair grader.
He is a really nice guy and one on one he is very helpful and nice, but his class is so hard! He is the toughest grader, and some in class assignments are not fair. You have to really work for your grade. I had to work so hard for mine and I am a good student. Good luck soc majors.
Brother Abel is a seriously ridiculous grader. He expects well above and beyond what is needed. I have work countless man hours on this class, an felt as though I received little in return. Attendance is not recorded, but he does give quizzes that you can't make up if you are missing. This class made me change my major.
This class was super awesome, I learned a lot and it was really fun. As someone who has never taken sociology before, I was a little lost at some points. There was a LOOOOOOTTT of group work, so if that's not your thing, don't take it, or if you do, get good groups. But Brother Abel is a fantastic teacher and so funny!
This has to be one of the hardest classes I've taken, but it was worth it! There is a TON of group work, so if that doesn't fly for you, don't take it (or just get good groups). Brother Abel is a FANTASTIC teacher! I have enjoyed every class that I've come to! I can really see that I've learned so much! Take this class!
Brother Abel is a super fun professor. He has a lot of fun projects but the majority is group work. His grading is very clear and if you show up and do your work, you'll pass.
Lots of reading & quizzes, but he gives candy to people who participate. he is great at engaging is students in discussion and is overall nice & easy to talk to. He's also great at letting his students know exactly what he wants from them
This was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. He is a very honest grader, and weighs your grade heavily on group projects. I was disappointed with my grade on one of the group projects until I looked back at the rubric and realized that if I were being completely realistic with myself, his grade was more than fair. Great class!
Repeats what is in textbook. If it wasnt for the attendance quizzes I wouldnt go to class. Asks student to talk poorly about other cultures and often asks students for evidence for his opinions. I do not recommend him.
He teaches false things about the gospel and doesn't teach well. DO NOT TAKE!!!
oh my gosh, were do i even start. just do no take any classes from him, not the brightest teacher.
Brother Abel is a terrible teacher. 100% busy work, I hardly learned anything. He treats you like a child. Throwing candy to people who comment in class? Please. He grades WAY too tough. Ridiculously tough. This is a 100 level class, not a doctorate program. Don't take a class from this guy.
I'd rather have just sat in the corner and read the textbook than listened to him talk. Would've learned more that way. I am a Junior and am an R.A. for multiple professors--I am not a slacker, but this guy is a waste of faculty position at the school.
Brother Abel is one of the best teachers on campus. He is great at helping us to understand the material being taught. It is a hybrid class so there is a lot of homework. We did not take a single test, but there are quizzes each class. He is very clear as to what he wants and if you follow that, you will get a good grade. Just do the work.
To be clear I am not bitter and I didn't get a bad grade, I just want to share how I felt. Abel is not a bad teacher but the way he treats you is annoying and degrading. When talking to him the feeling is that you are being talked at rather than talked with. He treats you as though you are lower than him. I think a good word to describe is pompous.
Don't take Abel unless you have to. Smart guy, just very holier than thou attitude.
One of the hardest professors I've had, but also the one I've learned the most from! Taking his classes has improved both my critical thinking and writing skills tremendously. I think people sometimes get upset that he doesn't baby you, and instead, actually pushes you to reach your potential. Both rewarding and challenging in the best way!
Course content was very interesting but took some investment on my part to really understand. Heard rumor of how tough he was, but if you show up, do the readings and are willing to engage in class- you'll be fine. He is great about meeting with you outside of class, but won't hand the answers to you. I'm glad he made me work to gain knowledge.
Brother Abel is an amazing professor. A lot of students scared me in the beginning because they said that he was super hard for the one assignment "Explain the Known" and "Explain the Unknown" but it wasn't hard at all! As long as you give yourself time to finish it and go in and talk to him, he will help you see what you need to fix.
I have been reading comments from other students about how Brother Abel is awful but here is the truth. His classes are tough but worthwhile. He makes his students think deeper and outside of the box. Sociology of Theory is all about complex thinking and trying to explain things in a certain way. Brother Abel is the perfect person for the job.
25% of your grade ... another group project! Specifically, a documentary covering the theories of the class. Umm, have software allowing 5 people to edit a video? ME EITHER :( Grade determined by classmates, no test/essay. As a person, Able is unkind. Cuts. Like a father figure that disciplines his own kids the HARDEST. Loved the class tho!
I LOVED Brother Abel's class! I learned more in this class than I did in any other class. He's kind, caring, respectful, a GREAT teacher, leads fascinating discussions, and is fair in his grading. His homework load is not too hefty either. Highly recommend and would definitely take again!
