Goofy teacher but really knows his stuff. Need to have self discipline in his class or you will do bad. Most of your grade comes from your test score.
I had him for class he tells you to drop out for the first half of class. the tests are very hard and barley correspond to what you learn. He's better than some teachers though so if you have him he's not the worst..but he's not even close the good. He also makes you my math lab (online homework) pay attention to that! and Do his suggested problems
Extremely good lecturer-one of the best I've ever had. Explicitly states all expectations for exams and provides students with all tools necessary to get an A in the class. Clearly explains problem-solving methodology and algorithms, if applicable. Answers all questions. Very helpful during office hours. All said, class is still hard.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had. Explicitly states expectation for exams and equips students with all tools necessary to get an A. Clearly answers any and all questions. Provides problem-solving methodology and algorithms when appropriate. All told, the class is still difficult. NOTE: do Exercises given in class-very helpful on exams.
He was hard to understand. He spoke english well but what he was saying made no sense. I couldn't talk to him one on one due to other classes but from a student who went to class almost every time his class was hard. He tried to trick you on every exam he would never give you something simple. Averages could be as high as 60%. Great guy, hard class
I've had Jenkins for Calc I, II, and III. He is a good teacher and explains what he expects you to know for his test and especially the finals. Do the recommended problems and examples. Really likes to put "tricky" problems on tests that allow him to cover several concepts with a single problem. But overall, learned a lot and did well on the finals
He explains concepts fairly well, and if you do the homework, attend class, and do the suggested problems, the tests shouldn't be too bad.
Great math teacher Follow him in class really learn a lot His exams are hard though
Jenkins is a decent professor. His test are hard because he fails to go over example problems similar to the ones in class. Though, if you are struggling visit him and he will help you.
If you want to know your Calculus as well as any student on campus, Jenkins is your guy. Best lecturer I've had. Taught me Calc I & II. Tough exams but it will serve you well on the departmental midterm and the final. Knowledge is unmatched. Jenkins has his signature daily attire of a chalk-dusty sweater, shorts and sneakers; comes ready to work.
Jenkins class is very difficult and you definitely need some previous calculus in order to understand. I ended up with a B- final grade that got curved to an A. The SI exam reviews are very helpful. I used these and some of Jenkin's practice problems to study. What I really hated is the homework. It takes forever and doesn't help much.
Very good teacher. Very difficult. If you have an open mind he is great
He was by far the best math teacher I had for explaining what we were learning, especially compared to the other Iowa State math teachers. However, more than half the class either dropped or failed. His clicker questions are trying to trick you as well as his test questions with many kids getting 0 out of 25 if you don't get the right answer.
I have taken Calculus previously & I thought this class would just be more of a review. But, this professor's teaching style and harsh grading have made this review session into a full blown nightmare. His lectures tend to go off on wild tangents which makes the material hard to understand. Mr. Jenkins takes pride in having such a high fail rate.
Puts material that was not covered in class or in the book on quizzes and exams.
He is good at explaining concepts but his tests are hard. If you want an A you'll need to really know the material.
If you want to actually learn Calculus, Jenkins is the professor for you. His tests are way harder than the rest of the sections, but it makes the midterm and final easier. He explains exactly what's going to be on the test and goes through problems very systematically - he explains the thought process at each step. It's a very hard class, though.
Good teacher but very tough tests. Must prepare
Adrian was great- always helpful. He will prepare you better for the calculus series better than any other professor. He explains things clearly, and manages to make abstract concepts intuitive. You will come out of his class with a far deeper understanding of calculus than any other professor in the calc 1 department.
Teacher's tests were difficult and often did contained concepts that were rarely talked about in class. Seemed to always blame a poor class average for tests on the students and did not accept responsibility for any errors in teaching material or prepping students for the tests.
Hard and fast paced. Everyday review needed to pass. Half the class dropped. Prides himself on low test scores. Averages in my class were 49-64. Book and his style don't mix ( differences in what topics are emphasized) and only used it for practice problems. Practice problems necessary for comprehension. DON'T MISS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS.
Adrian is a goofy guy, but honestly incredibly personable with a very firm understanding of what he is teaching. He explains things in a very follow-able way. I highly recommend him.
Jenkins is a goofy dude, but he knows what he is talking about. Overall, he is a great teacher that does enough practice problems in class to understand the concepts. Great teacher.
He teaches fast and efficiently. Zone out for five min and you're lost as hell. Miss a class you might as well drop. Very hard tests and a tough grader. He has a decent sense of humor. He wears the same thing almost every day.
Great lecturer, tough class. He's really good at explaining concepts and teaching you everything you need to know, that being said, tests are tough (which prepares you for midterm/final) and he grades tough. Grade is 80% exams 10% attendance and 10% quizzes. Do the optional homework, he pulls quiz questions directly from it.
Adrian is a great professor. He is one of the few that wants to make sure you are going to pass. He gets his point across in lectures and will point out the equations at the end to be sure you at least get that down. Do the practice problems he gives and you are sure to pass.
Not very clear when explaining things, doesn't prepare you well for exams
Go to class. Write down all the examples and definitions. If you don't understand it, you may need to go back and re-decipher your notes. If you ask questions, Adrian answers them pretty well. Once in a while his methods were confusing, but for the most part it just took some practice to get the hang of.
Michael Adrian Jenkins was somewhat of an interesting professor. He makes his class look really hard, and if you want a good grade you definitely have to work for it. Curve? Oh yeah, expect it especially with low averages such as 40 in the class. Practice from the book, go to office hours and go to class and you'll be in great shape.
One of the best math teachers you will ever have in college, perhaps in all of your academic life. But you need to have a study plan that works for his extremely difficult exams. And don't even think about skipping math homework, those homework quizzes need to be perfect.
Great lecturer. Knows what he's talking about and proves it. Fantastic person.
Worst professor i've ever had. When in need of help, he does NOTHING to help you.
Exams are brutal, but he does an excellent job of going over the material and preparing you for the exams. One of the best professors I've had here. He's there to get you through the material and puts things into real world perspective. Hopeful to have him again for the rest of my math classes here.
This professor is the best I have had for math. He is very good at explaining things, and will answer your questions well. He is extreamly transparent about the difficulty of the exams, and what will be on them. However to succeed in this class because of its difficulty you have to spend A TON of time working problems. Course has a large curve
Adrian is the best math professor that I have had while at Iowa State. His class is very difficult and he prides himself on having extremely hard test, but he teaches the material very well. If you actually want to learn the material he is the professor to have.
Very good professor. Glad to hear I have him again next semester. Tests count as a good amount of your grade percentage. Overall a very good professor who knows the material and is willing to answer any questions you may have.
Great math professor, he's sardonically funny and loves to tell you how hard everything is going to be. He teaches with lots of examples that helped me learn how to do the problems even when I didn't get the theory. He makes hella hard tests but he curves so everything comes out alright. You can tell he cares about his students.
His class is HARD. He may be a good professor for higher level calc classes but when it comes to trig he did not do a great job in my opinion. He warned us at the beginning of the semester that the homework questions would not prepare you for the exam because they are not hard enough. Homework is also not graded and no answers in back of book.
Jenkins is a genuine guy but that doesn't make up for his teaching. He gives homework that is not graded and there is no way to look up if you go the answers right to make sure your even doing the questions correctly. Also his teaching and the book do not lineup at all so the homework doesn't help anyway. God help me as i go into this final exam...
He is a great lecturer, don't miss class. However he offers no materials at all online so the textbook is your only resource. Test are very hard and not curved, he curves the course grade at the very end only, so you don't get any real sense of where you stand in the class until the class is over and he posts the final course grade.
Very difficult. Good at teaching high level calculus, but this guy doesn't mess around. No curve until the very end. Best math lectures I've ever had, but by FAR the hardest tests as well.
I've heard that in upper calculus he does a great job teaching, but with this class he did terrible. Did not seem to want to help students at all, and encouraged people to drop. Nothing could help prepare us for the exams for he pulled a lot of the questions out of no where. Usually an A student, ended with a B only because of the huge curve.
Dr. Jenkins does an excellent job teaching the material. His explanations are clear, and he seems to have a good grasp of what the students are thinking. He really encourages and teaches us to grow our way of thinking. Crazy difficult professor and course though.
Exams are brutal. Interesting guy and really loves what he teaches. Makes it easier to pay attention
One of the first professors I had at Iowa State and he set the bar high. His tests are definitely challenging but he gives you a strong curve. Does a great job explaining things in class and will answer questions thoroughly.
I was very lucky to have Jenkins for calc 2 and calc 3. When it comes to mathematics, he definitely knows his stuff. His lectures are very informative and mostly easy to listen to. If you want to do well in his class, make sure you attend every lecture. Do all the required online homework, and do some of the suggested problems from the textbook.
I think he's a horrible professor. He enjoys giving hard exams. This year he couldn't complete the course so he just went over the exercises quickly. I had the worst experience ever.
Dr. Jenkins is an experienced professor, his calc lectures were clear and his way of explaining is straight forward. However he will go tough on you, he prides on his tests being the final gates of calc. If you put the time, work and are sure of your bases you can pass. In office hours he explained hard problems thoroughly. Amazing professor
Adrian is a great teacher and person. You can tell he actually cares about students' well being. His exams are quite hard, and he grades very harshly, but in the end it all works out. He lets you use your calculator (and he encourages you to put notes and formulas into it), which is something that all math professors should do. Recommended.
Adrian is a great guy, and is extremely knowledgeable. He does seem to do a lot of proofs, which eventually turn out to be quite helpful. Not everything he says or works out on the board will make sense right away, but eventually you'll get it. His tests are difficult, but manageable if you know your stuff. Wish I had him for future Calc classes.
Despite his tough exams I think his lectures are quite useful and engaging. He uses examples straight out of the books, and connects it to his lectures. His exams are pretty brutal, and it really tests whether you know the material or not. He's a great guy though, just pay attention and put effort in the class and you'll be fine.
I don't understand the lecture but if you skip class, you won't get access to any of the lecture notes. I learned through the homework which is A LOT! He's a good lecturer, maybe it's just me not being smart enough. The test are tough. No weekly quizzes so the test does account for BIG percentage. Thebfinal exm was the toughest.
Our entire grade was comprised of exams, and nothing else really had a big effect on it. The exams were BRUTAL and I would definitely not recommend taking him as a professor.
He writes tests that are not fair. Our first Exam average was a 43% and most people dropped the class within 2 weeks. Would not recommend, not a good experience!
I think Adrian is very hard to understand. His lectures simply don't make sense. Sometimes he skips over material and makes you responsible for learning it, especially important parts. I recommend switching professors if I were you. He is an extremely tough grader and his tests match none of the homework.
His lectures do not make sense. Only exams are counted for grades (weekly quiz small portion) He legit said: "I'm not gonna teach you everything but you are still responsible to know everything in the book." If you have to take class GET A TUTOR ASAP. Assigns homework but doesn't give answer key so you never know if you are doing it right.
Jenkins is one of my favorite professors at Iowa State. Not only is he an amazing teacher and very knowledgeable, but he is also very accessible. He seems to really want us to succeed in this class but also for our future actuarial exam. The class might be difficult, but it is very comparable to actuarial exam so it is very good for preparation.
If you show up and listen you will really like him. At first he will seem a bit weird but he grows on ya.
Professor Jenkins was very available outside of class with office hours nearly every day. He is very helpful during office hours and will help with nearly any question that you may have. During this semester he wrote some of the more difficult questions on exams so listen during lecture because he gives difficult practice questions. Very good prof.
Jenkins was my favorite professor this semester. Jenkins was able to not only make a lot of the topics understandable, he genuinely cared for the people who attended his lectures. Jenkins is famously known for putting some of the hardest problems on the exams and he also uses a varied range of problems in class to help us learn. Use his help hours!
Jenkins is definitely an interesting lecturer. He moves quick so there is no time for you to be on your phone or doing anything else during class. If you prefer classic chalkboard notes, he's a good choice. I attended his lectures and watched Butlers videos on my own time to better understand the material and hear it from 2 different perspectives.
Not my favorite but not the worst prof. Class was kinda boring but he made the points clear and concise. The biggest problem is the lack of grades and feedback. The material is easy enough to understand but he only had us do 3 hws and gave very little feedback on them to better understand what we were doing wrong.
Had him as my calc 1 lecturer. He was an absolutely fantastic lecturer. Most of the class he worked through various examples on the board and challenged us to solve the problems but then worked it out for everyone who couldn't figure it out. He had plenty of funny jokes throughout and kept us engaged. It was very easy to copy the notes he gave.
His class is very dry with mostly "proofs" of the equations and some elementary examples. We were really only graded on midterm and final. Gave no hw so you don't know how you were doing on a subject until the exams.
I had Professor Jenkins for Trigonometry and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. The quizzes are either you pass with a 100% or you get an F and drop an entire letter grade. Do not take the class if you don't have to. His lectures make you more confused than you were coming into them and his exams are stupidly hard.
To begin, Adrian is a good guy. However, I didn't really enjoy his teaching style and found myself just reading the book or watching videos on the topics instead. The class is very fast-paced, with a quiz every week and three exams that are 10x harder than the homework. If you go to the lectures and study, you will definitely pass this course.
Adrian is a nice guy and you can tell he really knows what he's doing. He understands that many people taking Math 145 just needs the credits and are done with math which is nice. The curve saved my grade because exams are hard. Quizzes once every week so stay on top of homework to prepare because questions are right from the book.
Go to lecture and do the homework or else you'll get behind. A good amount of memorization of formulas but nothing absolutely crazy. I recommend doing the readings before the lecture, not after, so that you are introduced to the topic before he covers it in class.
Adrian does good working examples and giving feedback, but the class is very test-heavy with recitation quizzes and exams being the only thing of substance in the course. The class is very quickly paced, and had I not taken it in High School, I would have struggled. Adrian's office hours are a life saver, a definite must when taking this course.
Amazing professor with absolutely brutal exams. If you can pass his classes you can pass anything! After almost failing the first exam he set up a time 3 days a week to help me work through problems until I was more confident. Take every opportunity to seek help if needed he really cares about you and will do a lot to help if you ask.
Prof Jenkins is the best. My favorite professor I've had throughout college. He's funny, personable, knows the material, gives good advice, but is also a very tough grader. He makes the class difficult, but he also makes it able to succeed in the class with hard work. Accessible outside of the classroom for help and is a cool guy.
Jenkins is my favorite professor I have had at ISU. He is an extremely caring individual who truly wants students to succeed. In MATH 240 a lot of studying is required outside of class, but his lectures help basic understanding of difficult concepts.
Even though this is the hardest class I have taken at ISU, he teaches well and cares about his students. MATH240 is a class that takes a lot of time outside of class and he is always willing to help you during office hours. His class is test heavy but go to his office hours and you will see the benefits.
Adrian is super helpful and very genuine. He creates really hard test questions, but I feel it is better to have a professor who writes the hardest questions so you get prepared for them in class. 10/10 love Adrian.
I had Mr. Jenkins for Math 166 (Calc II) and he was by far the best lecture teacher for all secitions. He uses the chalkboard and walks us through solving very difficult problems. He is very easy to follow along with and doesn't spend any extra time teaching garbage that you won't need. He is the BEST math teacher I have ever had and I reccomend.
Michael is the best teacher I have had so far at ISU, and the best math teacher I have had in general. You can tell that he loves what he teaches, and that makes it so much more enjoyable to attend class. The exam questions can be tough, but he does a great job teaching you what you need to know and not wasting time on garbage.
Professor Jenkins is a truly kind and helpful professor. He is always willing to take questions and assist students during office hours. Math 240 is a difficult course but Jenkins will absolutely help you pass if you put in the effort. His lectures are taught well and always beneficial to learning in this course. Awesome professor all-around.
One of the best professors I've had at ISU. Lectures were very theory heavy which was nice so we didn't just have formulas thrown at us for 50 minutes. Office hours are the best out of every professor at Iowa State. Super caring and wants his students to succeed.
He's a chill person and he's good at explaining concepts in a more intuitive way. He does difficult practice questions, but its good prep for the types of questions you'll see on quizzes and on the exam. Overall his explanations are very helpful because he breaks everything down into small steps. The class is hard, but not because of him.
I was in Math150. He was so easy to understand. Practice tests were identical to exams. he was a little disorganized but so nice and really knew what he was talking about. would take again.
I would not recommend him for introduction level classes. He teaches using a math heavy vocabulary, making it hard for those who don't have a tremendous amount of experience. Personally, I did not bother showing up to lectures. As it would be harder for me to depict what he was trying say, than it was for me to learn the material on my own time.
Made simple math way more confusing then it had to be. Didnt like the way he did problems. Great guy though!
Very nice professor, went in and reviewed my exams, and he did a great job making sure what went wrong. Also went back and regraded problems when Pearson was a little too harsh, tough class, but I wouldn't blame him for it. Ensure that the practice exams are well-embedded in your memory before taking the actual exams, as they are very similar.
He is an extremely knowledgeable professor who very clearly knows what he is talking about and communicates what he knows very effectively in his lectures. If you have questions of any kind, he answers them with the upmost respect and knows exactly how to answer your question. Difficulty ceiling is fairly high to start with, though, so be prepared.
